Explore the natural and cultural history of the Lake Superior region.

The geologic story of the Lake Superior region is rooted in fire and ice. Ancient lava flows emerged from a mid-continental rift. As this molten rock cooled, its weight pushed down on the earth’s crust creating a bowl shape that would one day be Gitchi-Gummi. Glaciers scoured the landscape and their melting filled the bowl with water to form Glacial Lake Duluth. Water levels in modern day Lake Superior are hundreds of feet below the level of this ancient lake.

Early fish residents of the region included paddlefish and arctic grayling. These prehistoric fish are now found only in the western states and territories. You can see both in the origins exhibit at the aquarium in downtown Duluth. Paddlefish are known for their long flat noses, physical similarities to sharks and reliance on plankton for food. Arctic grayling dazzle with their metallic colored scales.

Learn more about the origins of Lake Superior at the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth!

http://www.glaquarium.org/index.php

It's 17 dinosaurs up to 36 feet tall and 56 feet long doing a theatrical arena show produced by BBC that's been seen by 5.2 million people worldwide.
Ten species are represented from the entire 200 million year reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the terror of the ancient terrain, as well as the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the awesome Cretaceous. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail.
The show depicts the dinosaurs' evolution, complete with the climatic and tectonic changes that took place, which led to the demise of many species. With almost cinematic realism, WALKING WITH DINOSAURS has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, and the audience sees how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators.
WALKING WITH DINOSAURS - The Arena Spectacular will perform 6 performances; Friday, August 6 at 7 pm; Saturday, August 7 at 11 am, 3 pm and 7 pm; Sunday, August 8 at 1 pm and 5 pm.
Just returned from Stony Point in Knife River on Lake Superior. Yesterday was a blue day, no clouds, no ice on the lake – shades of blue everywhere. It felt like a spring day – ice was melting. I even witnessed the springs first seagull - followed a few minutes later by a Bald Eagle.

Did you know that Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world? It's deepest point is over 1,250 feet! It also have 3 quadrillion gallons of water which means it is large enough to contain all the other great lakes. Lake Superior agates are beautiful and it is a real treat to have such a natural wonder in the great state of Minnesota.
