line-height: 115%;">A lot of Flames fan and myself included have been waiting for that key number one center to play with Jarome Iginla but recently when I saw the Glencross - Jokinen - Iginla line put together It showed me that Jokinen can play with Iggy he has developed chemistry with the big center. It showed even more when the Tanguay - Jokinen - Iggy line was put together that Jokinen has found his game between Iggy and tangs. A lot of people have been critizing the big forward ever since he was signed as a free agent but I think it was a great signing and Olli has shown us he can play that “Big Mans” game that everyone’s been talking about. Maybe the whole team should go and eat big macs like Olli get some more goals for the team. But in all seriousness I Think the Flames shouldn’t go after a Carter because we don’t want to lose more talent and Prospects that we need especially don’t want to lose players like (Brodie, Backlund, Bartschi, or Irving) and a first round pick. That’s a huge price for a number one center that has a huge contract. So I believe the Flames should go after a number two center like Gagner I know it will never happen but I’d love a number two center with potential like Gagner. We need help in the center position badly if we want to start winning. I believe with another second line center or Derek Roy we can be a better team down the middle (Jokinen, Roy, Backlund, Jones, Horak) Would be a good group of centers (In my opinion). But the price for Roy I don’t really know what we’d give up.

In other news I want to address is Mikeal Backlund and his play this year. I believe he is still a great player with a ton of potential and can be that top 6 forward we want him to be. He’s Just taking time to blossom into that type of player we see the skill he has. I just think people Should stop putting so much heat on him to produce he’s a young guy the goals will come. Just thought I’d say that cause there’s so much heat on him from the fans and from media got to stop blaming players for not producing it just hurts there confidence. Goals will come it’s a tough market to play in. Every player goes through it cause of the media and it really bothers me. But I love how Backlund’s been playing and I can see him producing soon.

The Jones trade has been a great trade Jones has been a great gritty player who gets under the skin of players, blocks shots, plays hard and tries to chip in if he can. I know he’s not the best player but it’s a win for the trade we got he’s been exactly what we wanted and he deserves to be a Calgary Flame. Another player I have been impressed with is Leland Irving he has been amazing in net and having Kipper as his teacher is a great plus. I believe he can be the starter When Kipper retires the kid has a great future I believe. Sutter’s coaching has been a concern of a lot of Flames fans and I don’t know if we should Blame him or not I think it’s partly his fault and a little bit of the players faults as well but Kipper has been absolutely amazing for us and we should give him more support offensively but Injures has been a huge thing this year for Calgary and it’s hurt our offense. Last thing I want to say is that Kipper and Iggy will never be traded I believe they will retire as a Flame.

-Justin (@Justinbeatty777)

Let’s listen in on the conversation as coach Sutter, Lowry, and Hartsburg brainstorm with different ideas. My sources have hidden audio for us; chipmunks are very sneaky that way.

Sutter: "Before we get into today’s meeting, whose turn is it to make sure Olli gets driven to the closest McDonalds?"

Hartsburg: "Making him eat three of those combos was maybe crossing the line, Coach; he almost puked in my car twice!"

Lowry: "It’s my turn, but I am not going to be the one to drug him this time so we can get him in the car."

Sutter: "This time we make him eat four. We really need the two points."

Hartsberg: "You crazy *******! You can't make him eat four big Mac's!”

Sutter: "You *****************! You call me a ******** and you could get demoted to Glencross's driver!”

[I interrupt this dialog until the language quiets down. Sorry about that, but we couldn't let it go on due to this being a family site. We now join the conversation in progress four hours later.]

Lowry: "Look, you nimrods, we still have to figure out how to get Olli drugged so we can make him eat the Big Macs."

Sutter: "We will get Jackman to do it. Tell it he has to do it for the team."

Lowry: "Fine. It’s my turn to take him; I will get Jackman to do it after the meeting.”

Sutter: "So now on to the reason we are here today. Faceoffs. How are we going to get our Centres to win one?"

Hartsburg: "We threaten to shoot them if they don't win the draw."

Lowry: "Wouldn't work. They would all be dead 5 minutes into the game, and we would all be in jail."

Hartsburg: "That's the beauty of my plan -- we wouldn't actually shoot them."

Sutter: "They would stop believing us after 10 minutes, and lose respect for us."

Lowry: "We could dress up as players and take the draws ourselves."

Hartsburg: "I don't think we could. The Refs would catch us."

Sutter: “Not only that, we would lose our breaths trying to get back to the bench so the centre could come out to take his shift."

Lowry: "Then you guys know what this means."

Hartsburg: "No! There has to be another way."

Sutter: "Let’s not be too hasty, Dave."

Lowry: "We have to clone Kipper and let him take all the draws. He does everything else on this team."

Sutter: "We can't yet. Our device has not been tested yet. We don't know if it will work."

Hartsburg: "Then I guess it’s back to practice."

Sutter: "Whoever said ‘practice makes perfect’ was clearly wrong! It seems to make us worse and worse."

Lowry: "Let’s put this issue on the backburner for now, until we can test the clone machine."

[Wow, sorry for the interruption, but who would have thought that the Flames would have a clone machine!?!]

Sutter: "Okay; let’s close with our chant. All together now: "OILERS SUCK!"

There you have it. Scouts scrambling and many flights will be booked across North America.

The big question right now is which teams are buyers and what teams are sellers. Clearly Columbus, Carolina and Edmonton are clear cut sellers. Teams like Montreal, Buffalo and Anaheim will be limited sellers who will look to make moves that won’t hurt the team’s ability next year. For the other bubble teams; Phoenix, Dallas, Tampa, NYI, Winnipeg, Florida, Colorado and Calgary all have to decide what they are in the next two weeks.

I know Feaster has said loud & clear that the Flames are building to win and win now. But he won’t pull the trigger on a big deal; maybe he can’t or maybe he himself is not sold on the “win now” mentally by the owners. Regardless Feaster and the rest of the Flames group have to figure it out quickly. Personally if Feaster waits until February 27th to improve this team it could be too late. Right now with so many teams believing they are still in the playoff picture the price of certain players (Ruutu, Roy, Hemsky & Pitkanen) is higher than most GM’s would like.

So what should Feaster do? Overpay and pray it works out? I just can’t see him doing that and I do not think the Flames are in that position. I just cannot see Feaster forking over Backlund, prospect and our 1st round pick for the likes of Jeff Carter.

Perhaps my opinion is not shared by most but I would be shocked if Feaster and the Flames buy high for Jeff Carter. Derick Brassard might be the guy that Feaster puts the load on. We know he was hot after Kyle Turris and Derick Brassard fits the mould. Young guy high ceiling that would be a lower risk than acquiring Carter and his lengthy contract. I would say “Sam Gagner” but like the Oilers would make that deal sending their new golden boy to their rivals.

My thoughts what are yours?

There is nothing that burns me more than another crazy General Manager getting pressured into making a run for the playoffs.

I would not mind this if I really thought the Flames had a chance. Seriously, this team is not even close. At best, they are lucky to to be a playoff team.

Right now they are fighting for their lives just to make it to the playoff. I know the saying that anything could happen in the playoffs. It is true, a hot goalie could carry the team in the playoffs. But seriously, Kipper would have to be near perfect to win the cup.

They are two games above the 500 mark. They are one of the most inconsistent teams in the league. I have watched this team give the best teams in the league a run for their money, splitting with the Wings, for example, but on the other hand losing to the Jackets twice this season.

The only consistent player they have had is Kipper, without whom the Flames would be below the Oilers in the standings. Their best dman is JBO, who is paid almost $7 million and has only scored 4 goals this season.

The problem is that he would not be a number one dman on most of the teams in the league, only a 2 or 3 dman There is the problem -- the leaders on this team do not match the talent of the contenders.

In fact, they are just barely ahead of the lower echelon teams. I'll throw this out there - if the Flames weren't in the pathetic division they are, they would not be even be a 500 team. They still have to play the west for the bulk of the season -- have fun, guys.

It is common knowledge that I am not the biggest Flames fan right now, in fact, I am almost the opposite. But I blog on this team, and have kept track of this team since there were dinosaurs. And for the last what seems to be the whole decade, this team has not changed. They get enough talent to stay close in the playoff hunt and pick between 13th and 16th, and then mess that up. Except last year, the Flames actually picked the best player available.

They are on what I call “the stupid cycle”; meaning they are battling again and again for the eighth or maybe seventh. Lately, they are missing the playoffs by two or four points. Tell me, what is the point of ruining the future when they don't even have a present? But alas, every year we go through the same cycle, the stupid cycle.

The Flames find themselves four points out and have a tough task ahead if they hope to claim that final playoff spot. Minnesota will be the team they need to knock off and although that seems reasonable, reality is Colorado, Dallas and Phoenix are all in the same belief.

If the Flames seriously believe they can reach that final spot than management should react soon. Many injuries and lack of scoring have me worried. I know Kiprusoff has been solid and will most likely continue to be that way but this team can’t sit back and hope that is the case. Feaster keeps echoing the owners mentally of “win now” and although the Morrison for Connolly deal made sense it does not help this team win today. So let’s take a look at who may be available to help the Flames take that next step:

Derek Roy- Some “insiders” believe Roy is available and will be moved by the deadline. I like Roy and I would love him on the Flames roster; he wins face offs, character guy and is a #1 centre that can pass the puck. But what would it cost? I could not imagine Buffalo moving him without a piece coming back or a high end prospect. Likely they would want someone like Backlund and a pick, although I do not think Buffalo would take that deal.

The Flames are at max NHL contracts so to add a body they need to move a body or more.

Jeff Carter- This seemed to be the Flavour of the week last week; from Darren Dreger mentioning the Flames to the Carter sweepstakes to twitter blowing up with random suggestions regarding a trade. With his lengthy contract and the price to acquire Carter (player +1st rd pick + prospect) I just can’t see Feaster making that happen.

Jason Blake- Although Anaheim has not given up on their playoff hopes it is believed they will sell a few players real soon. Jason Blake who recently returned from injury, has been playing well and has drawn some interest from teams. Obviously with him having an expiring contract at season’s end it makes him attractable to a team looking for depth up front. If the Flames are indeed in talks over Jason Blake I can only see this strictly as a rental situation to replace Stempniak while he is injured. Blake’s speed and maturity would be a nice fit for the Flames as long as they do not give up to much. Perhaps a Mitch Wahl or Henrik Karlsson can make that deal happen.

Although we need some offensive help I wouldn’t mind seeing an upgrade on the back end. Butler is playing too much and it has not been pretty. I also see Sarich being shipped out soon so perhaps Feaster has his eye on a few d-men to upgrade the top 4.

Flames vs Kings~ Plus More

Flames vs Kings

8:30pm SNET-W & FAN 960

Sutter vs Sutter Round 2

Another crucial game for the Flames, but don’t you worry; Matt Stajan is back!
Flames go into LA after an exciting shootout loss to the Sharks where they played a decent game and had opportunities to win the game. Tonight’s game I expect to be a similar affair; both teams have great goaltending and I am sure it will be on the display again. The challenge for the Flames is getting that offence going. Players like Backlund, Stempniak and Comeau have to get back to creating offence and putting that puck in the net.

When you break down the stats between these two teams it is clear that the Kings are the better defensive team including on the penalty kill. Also LA can win face offs which for another season is an embarrassing stat for the Flames. This was not addressed in the off-season and so far into the season we still don’t have any capable centers who can win a draw consistently.

I expect a high intense style game as these two teams met last week and both clubs know how bad they need the points. With that being said I am nervous for the Flames, who in my opinion lack the skill to go along with the grinding effort.

This and That:
It’s been out there that Feaster has contacted teams about certain centers (Gaustad & Vermette) really this should be no surprise to anyone. The Flames are terrible at face offs and our current group of centers in my opinion are not what we need moving forward. Backlund has been disappointing this year; if a broken pinky in camp affects a player this much and for this long than the doctor that helped him should lose his license. Horak/Byron, have shown exciting moments at times but are not ready for a full year in the NHL at center. Also neither guy will be more than a third line center; also keeping in mind Byron mostly plays on the wing now. Jokinen has been good not great but good, depending on his price tag we might be forced to re-sign him in the off season. Then there is Jones who has been great since he has been here and should solidify a spot on the bottom two lines as a center for years to come.

Feaster has to focus on the center position. Come July 1 there will not be much out there for good center- men, so the trade route might be his only way to improve that position. Gaustad would provide a big presence who can win face offs and hold down the third line. Vermette is a second line center and really we have a lot of those in the mix. But he brings speed and in a new environment can score 20-25 goals.

If next season our centers look like this: Vermette-Backlund-Gaustad-Jones/Horak, I would not be upset. With the UFA class we are not going to get a legitimate #1 center and we do not have the assets to acquire one in a trade. As of right now our centers next year would look like this: Backlund-Stajan-Horak-Jones, good luck in the West with that group.

GO FLAMES GO

If he can keep his head in the game, Rene can score 20-30 goals a season. He has ton of speed and has the potential to be a top 6 forward. His main problem is that he gets lazy and takes silly penalties. But if Rene can keep his head and stay motivated, he can be a very gritty, talented forward. He not a soft player. But he really needs to work hard on a consistent basis.

The Habs get a no-nonsense forward in Patrick Holland. He has the potential to be a solid third-line forward. He is solid skater, who plays pretty well in his defensive zone. He has a good head on his shoulders.

The Flames get their top 6 forward in Cammy. He has scoring ability in buckets. Cammy has really struggled this season, but he had a career year with the Flames in the '08 season. He has a great one-timer, and more importantly, is great playmaker who connects with Iginla. The two were very successful in Calgary.

As for the prospect goaltender, the Flames are realizing that Kipper won’t be here forever and that they need to start to thinking of the future.

So who gets the best of the trade? Well, usually the team that gets the better player wins the trade. So logically, that means the Flames; but let’s not be too hasty here. If Bourque can keep his head, the Habs might not lose too much. The Flames do get the best player and prospect, but the Habs get a higher draft pick. To me, it’s a wash.

So I went to the regular panel and asked them the same question: Who won the Bourque trade? The Habs or Flames?

Mike Walsh:

Here is how I break down the trade:

Cammalleri is better than Bourque
Holland is equal to a 5th round pick
Ramo is equal to a 2nd round pick.

Based on that, the Flames have won the deal.

Rene Bourque is a very good hockey player, when he decides to play, and that has been his problem. He has become unreliable, way too inconsistent and in fact for being a power forward, he rarely drives and attacks the net. Rather, he has been playing on the perimeter and taking shots from the outside. If Bourque can get back to playing as an actual power forward, Montreal has themselves a very good hockey player.

Mike Cammalleri is a one shot sniper, something the Flames have been missing. He had his best season playing alongside Jarome Iginla, and the Flames are clearly hoping that the chemistry is rekindled and sparks the offense.

The other pieces: Patrick Holland is a good prospect, but he is still a project. If he plays in the NHL, in my opinion, he will be a bottom 6 forward in the league. The Flames ultimately get a 5th round pick back, a pick they gave up for Pierre Leblond. Kari Ramo is in his mid 20's, and from everything I have read, has become a much better goalie since going over to the KHL. Now that doesn’t translate to anything at the NHL level, but he adds depth to the organization. Ramo has already stated he would like to come to Calgary, and I don’t know if would be willing to come back over just to end up in the AHL.

Montreal gains a 2nd round pick and from the Flames perspective, they will have ample opportunities to get that pick back through 2 trade deadlines. 2nd round picks tend to be the cost of playoff rentals on deadline day, and the Flames are likely going to be in a position to dump players for those type of picks.

Dearen:

All in all, I think it’s a good deal for both teams. Both Cammalleri and Bourque had worn out their welcomes. Now it’s really about which one will make the bigger impact on their new team, and my money is on Cammalleri. Who won the Cammalleri/Bourque trade?

Great question; mostly because two underachieving teams made a trade that could go either way for either team.

I will say the Flames won this deal but only slightly…for now.

I was one of the loudmouths who wanted Bourque out of town. His selfish play and lack of real emotion had gotten under my skin. Some Habs’ fans will likely say something similar about Cammalleri’s play this year. So in the sense of Bourque for Cammalleri, I would say the Flames won hands down (more star value in Cammalleri). Now in the contract sense, it gets a bit more interesting. As long as Iginla is in Calgary, the Flames will push for the playoffs. Some may call it a pipe dream, but it is reality. Cammalleri is more expensive, with a bigger cap hit, but Bourque’s term is longer. It will depend on how both players end up performing, but I am more at ease having Cammalleri for two more years at $6 million than Bourque at $3.33 million for four more years. So in the end, Cammalleri may attract better quality free agents and convince Iginla to re-up his contract when it ends in just over a season from now.

Where it gets interesting is all the added players/picks (Holland & 2nd rd pick to Montreal, Ramo & 5th rd pick to Calgary). Holland will become a solid character third line player down the road. A second round pick could get another Cammalleri type calibre player if developed properly, or he could be an AHL-lifer type player. Now Ramo, the goalie who is arguably the best goaltender outside of the NHL, could be the successor to Kipper. It is too early to tell, but the argument can be made. I will say if he comes over next year, we could see Irving and or Karlsson flipped for a pick in the near future.

All in all, I feel Calgary got more “guaranteed value”. From what I have heard, Cammalleri is a vocal guy in the dressing room, who brings a spark which the Flames can use. I also feel as though Gauthier made a rush decision to accept this deal and should have been patient (trade deadline) before unloading a guy like Cammalleri.

But Feaster is having trouble getting the message across. Feaster does not feel he is being unreasonable, but if you ask the opposing General Managers, they are saying he is not playing nice. So the problem is who do I trust? So I had to go to my special and trusted sources to find out secret dialogue that is not meant for peons like you and I.

First of all, I must inform you that I cannot say this enough -- do not tell anyone. If my sources found out about me going public, I could lose them. So shhhhhhhhhhh, and don't say a word on how you know about this conversation. This is a conversation between Jay Feaster and Bob Murray.

Feaster: So really, is everyone available? Really honest-to-goodness the truth?

Murray: Really. Jay seriously, why are you calling? Like you have anything we have!

Feaster: Oh, I thought you would trade us that player Hagmen.

Murray: Jay, you really need to get a cup of coffee. You put him on waivers, remember?

Feaster: Oh yeah. I do need some of that coffee. I will be right back.

Goes and gets a cup of coffee

Feaster: How about Ryan Getzlaf?

Murray: We\re really not trading him. I just wanted to appease him. Make him think we are doing what he wants. He is not playing nice.

Feaster: How about Bobby Ryan?

Murray: You don't want him.

Feaster: Yeah, I do.

Murray: No you don't, because he has cooties.

Feaster: How about Ryan Perry?

Murray: We are not trading him. He did not want to be left out, so we had to say we are trading him too.

There you have it, a heated discussion. Now you know Bobby Ryan has cooties, and Ryan Getzlaf is not playing nice, and Perry does not want to be left out.

Without my sources, you would of never have known that Murray does not want to trade any of the Ducks players, unless Murray was really just getting rid of Feaster. Is there more to this conspiracy? Maybe no-one wants to deal with Jay, who really is big bully? Don't worry, I will stay on this. So many questions and no answers.

Randy

Bad enough that the fans have declared a State of Emergency. How bad are things in Calgary? Bad enough to get me to come out of hibernation and write on the comical misfits of the NHL team known as the Calgary Flames; or I affectionately know them, the Keystone Cops.

Seriously, I was pretty much determined never to write again, and most of the people in Calgary think that is a good thing. What finally got me out of hiding is that no team can be this bad without me addressing it. What make me laugh most of all is remembering the words of Jay Feaster saying that the Flames were good enough to make the playoffs. Now I can just hear him saying "I was misquoted," claiming insanity, that he did not know what he was saying, that didn’t even know what he was doing.

Before everyone says it is because of injuries, let me say this: Thbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbtttttttttttt! Get over it. The Flames are just — well, in a word — awful. To the point that it is comical to watch them. Someone needs to tell the Flames' defense to maybe try to pass to their teammates. Of course, it might help if the forwards could try to see if someone is behind then when doiing a back pass. Make sure that someone is there to receive the said back pass. These hints may be very easy to understand, but the Flames don’t seem to understand the basic principal. Yes, Butler was a -7 against the Bruins, but guess what? He was not responsible for all of the goals. Far from it, there were five Keystone Cops with him. Maybe the Flames don’t understand the rules, that the team with the most goals wins. Maybe someone sent a memo on Thursday that the rules have changed.

The forwards seem to think that the puck comes right to them because they want it to. They seem to think that they don’t have to skate hard, because the other team will feel sorry for them. Well actually, the Bruins did feel sorry for them, after they scored nine goals. Irving should have sued his teammates for stupidity. Rumour has it that Kipper was caught trying to escape the arena when Irving was pulled. I do not think he was too excited about coming into that game. Oh, and could someone please take time to explain to Olli that there are more players on the ice than just Iggy. Olli seems to think Iggy can’t live until he scores his 500th goal. He is trying to make sure Iggy gets it at all costs, whether the Flames win or not. So I guess the Flames will lose, until Olli can get Iggy his 500th goal. Hence, Flames 0 and Boston a whole lot more than that. Kipper and Irving are casting lots to see who is in net Saturday. The loser plays and the winner sits on the bench and laughs at him. Irving seem to be winning at this game. Maybe the dice is loaded.

In other news, the Flames have decided that Brent Sutter is not to blame here, thus making it known that the players are totally brainless. For some reason, Feaster is not having much luck trading with any of other teams, who seem to have picked up on the message, and they are not so eager to deal with the Flames.

Which pretty much means we are in a Catch 22. We can keep blaming our players, which is good, then we know who is at fault. The problem is, every other team knows it too, making kind of hard for the Flames to improve the Keystone Cops.

So we now wait to see if Feaster has hired someone yet to hypnotize all the other 30 General Managers in the League. So now we wait, and hope for the best. The Flames will enter this game after grabbing one point in each of their last two road games, but are in need of a win on this quick road trip.
You can expect Kipper back in net for the Flames and we could see Backlund drawing back in unless the flu has reached him too. Moss who was anticipated to return this game will likely be out for another game and possibly more as his ankle is still bugging him.

Flames fans cringe and expect the worst when playing the highly skilled and fast Hawks; and for this game I expect no different. The Flames have played better in the last 3 weeks but have only gotten two points against inferior opponents; beating the Hawks could be that win this team needs to get on a roll. I will say although I have been more pleased with the Flames play of late; the departure of Giordano to injury could start catching up to us now. The increased shots on Kipper and some confusion in our own zone are beginning to show and must be addressed before it snowballs.
For the Flames to be successful against Chicago they must be ready to skate and play a physical game. The first line will have to perform which they have not done in their last few games besides being on the power play. It’s obvious the Flames do not have the high end talent like the Hawks but this game can be won in the trenches with hard and smart plays. Kipper will be relied on heavily and as long as you keep the traffic away from him, he can steal the game for the Flames.

This and That:

With the roster freeze to kick in next week do not expect any moves by the Flames. Although the constant array of rumors continues to circle, nothing seems imminent. Some feel the Flames could have had Kyle Turris but in my opinion Ottawa overpaid and I am glad Feaster let that ship sail by.

Also I have heard Cammalleri is being targeted by Feaster: This one kind of makes me laugh, even if he Cammalleri was available what are willing to give up? Plus what would Montreal take to even up the cap space? Again in my opinion this is just that a “wild rumor”

My advice to people aching for a serious move is: Wait until February 27th or close to that date; on that day the Flames will make a commitment as to whether they make a final push for a playoff spot or lightly sell off. Right now Feaster has to let this play out a bit, making a big splash now may be regretted come February. With many contracts expiring come July the Flames can move some bodies (Sarich, Moss, BMo, Jokinen and Stempniak) February 27th and get a return to build for the future.
Playoffs are still within reach but unless the Flames can beat some top teams like Chicago they will be once again watching from their couch!

GO FLAMES GO

Or is this just false hope and the team is on a “good” stretch?

Hours prior to another Canucks vs Flames puck drop I sit and wonder if this team is going to do the whole win two out of every three games like last year. We currently have captured seven out of a possible eight points in our last four games as the team rolls in to GM place. Besides the last five minutes against ironically Columbus the Flames have seemed to have bought in. Playing hard, Iginla and Bourque are alive and Sutter’s voice seems to be heard; although at times against Edmonton the gate seemed to be open into our zone.

So what is happening? Perhaps the players are finally embarrassed and feel the heat from Feaster that he is serious when he says “youth” will be injected at the expense of experience?

Acquiring Comeau at the time looked like a no brainer and so far it has turned out great. Comeau skates well and works extremely hard, although he makes the odd goofy mistake; it can be credited to his constant effort and pursuit of the puck, those mistakes I can live with.

So how about our back end? You have Giordano possibly done for the remainder of the season, if not close to the rest of the year. Three years ago we had what some argued the best top 6 d-group; but even with Gio out this group looks more engaged and eager. Brodie and Smith look like guys who have played in the NHL for 2 years and are finally breaking out. Scott Hannan has been a great addition and has been a steady rock in front of Kipper. Tough to complain about this group who seem to not have missed a beat with Giordano out, but how long will it last? I am not sure this D-group can play like this for another 3 months and get us in to the playoffs.

Although I am nervous for tonight’s game in Vancouver; I am eager to see what team we are going to see. If the players commit we could be back into last season and honestly I am not sure the final result will be any different; but we will be entertained.

Perhaps some may feel I am too optimistic or not optimistic enough but as we have learned next week could be a whole new story. Either way I am eager to see what happens next.

Another game for Comeau; I believe as he gets more comfortable we will see that Blake Comeau was a great addition.

The Wild have been good this season and although they have the third worst goals for in the Western conference, they are getting great goaltending. The Wild have changed and are no longer that boring team that we can steal two points from. The Flames will be in tough and we all know how this team hates playing at odd start times.

Calgary has to start finding the back of the net; we now have the second fewest goals for, only ahead of the Islanders. I look at guys like Bourque and Iginla, both have been terrible. Bourque is on pace for 4 assists this season. That to me is a clear sign of his lack of puck possession plays and lack of drive to use his big frame to head to the net.

I am not sure this season is salve able anymore, but if it is we have to now start scoring and stringing together some wins; otherwise Feaster may have to begin his “yard sale” winter style.

Rumours:

I know rumours keep floating around and although Iginla’s name is right in the middle, do not expect him dealt just yet.

Reality is that he makes that decision and Feaster has said that he wants Iginla part of the solution moving forward.

If this team was to start “cleaning house” which I believe it may still be a little bit early; they will have to wait until closer to the trade deadline to gain the best return possible.

It’s safe to say if Feaster could work out a deal to have Bourque & Stajan’s contract gone he would do it in a heartbeat. Bourque could have some value but teams are looking to send a contract back CGY’s way and Feaster is hoping to subtract not swap.

Feaster also was quoted “We want Byron back up soon, I will be working hard to create a roster spot” If that is the case he will need to open up more than one; Moss is getting closer to returning and same goes for Carson.

In terms of rumours with names attached I do not have anything legit. But could the Oilers and Flames be making another deal soon?

GO FLAMES GO

I hope that win will spark a streak but unless this team can show some consistency we could easily see another home loss before a five hundred record.

Hagman joins the Anaheim Ducks off of re-entry waivers and the Flames will pay him 1.5 million to play there. I am glad Niklas is getting a chance to continue his NHL career and have a chance to play for a new contract and rebound his career. This obviously starts many Phaneuf trade jokes as we are left with only Stajan from the original deal. It will always be a trade than I am not happy about but give Feaster credit; although no one wants our junk he is finding ways to cut salary bring in youth and try to put his mark on this contract strapped team.

GO FLAMES GO

The last two meetings have gone well for the Flames and we hope that continues.

After a 4-1 loss in Chicago on Friday night we once again can chalk this one up as a “must win”. Sounds crazy but if they lose this game the Flames will be three games under five hundred and it will be a long flight home.

Now if the Flames win this game they will knock off a division rival and can get back to a five hundred record with a win on Tuesday against the struggling Senators. That sounds a lot more encouraging than saying “let’s beat the Sens so we don’t fall to a 6-10-1 record if they lose to the Avs.

Now it is really easy to be negative and many fans are, rightfully so. But I feel a win in Colorado may spark a good stretch with a manageable schedule ahead.

Let’s get the good trends started today and beat the Avs at home. Backlund looks strong and should continue to grow and provide this team with a reliable offensive minded center who can kill some penalties if needed, and hopefully get Iginla going.

Go Flames Go

Backlund makes his season debut after a broken finger injury and is expected to play between Tanguay and Iginla. TJ Brodie may play according to coach Sutter which means Sarich may be the odd man out again on the blue line. Paul Byron the call up for the injured Morrison may play in Chicago with Stajan being the center who sits. Expect Byron to play on the wing to start the game with Horak and Stempniak.

We all know Feaster has been active in the trade market without success so he made changes by bringing in youth. Although two players come in due to injuries, the Flames quickly look smaller and faster.

Chicago is the team many feel are the team to beat. However they have has some serious issues keeping the puck out of their net. The Hawks have allowed the third most goals against in the West, which hopefully continues for the goal scoring struggling Flames.

Bourque heads back to Chicago where he formerly played. This will hopefully spark the big winger into having a good game. Lately he has looked un-interested and sluggish at best; he can’t seem to win battles and is easily shaken off the puck. We will also face against former Flame Montador who is having another solid start to an NHL season with the Hawks.

In conclusion the next three games will be huge for the Flames, they will play against two teams they should beat (Avs & Sens) and if not the shoe may finally drop. Hopefully the addition of the hungry Backlund to the top line will spark Iginla and Tanguay and we see a motivated dominating top line.

News: Niklas Hagman has cleared waivers and will report to the Abbotsford Heat

GO FLAMES GO

This comes as to no real surprise with Backlund being ready to return. Hagman has been a healthy scratch this year and has not done much when he has played.

Feaster is clearly showing that young guys can remain on the team if they play the way they are supposed to. Horak is that example and I am glad he is staying put; some nights he has been the Flames best forward.

As for Hagman, he is a hard working guy but it just has not worked in Calgary. Perhaps they were the better team against the Wild but with all those power plays; the score should not have been 3-0 in favor of the Minnesota Wild.

Let’s recap:

The Flames go in to Detroit and win convincingly right after being blown out at home. Then they get a stellar performance from Karlsson in Buffalo in a loss to then fly to Colorado and win. They come home feeling relatively good and get beat by a division rival. Clearly inconsistency is evident with this team and we knew that before the season even started.

So what changes the trend or what needs to be done to go in the direction this team needs to go?

Trade: So if Feaster does want to make a trade, does anyone want to trade with him? It’s not like we have a whole lot of “wanted” talent. Perhaps Rene Bourque could fetch us a nice return but like I have stated before I highly doubt he gets us a return that will help this team this year. JBo is another name but with his “no trade clause” and massive contract, unless we take a bad contract back I can’t see us ridding ourselves from that contract. And if you believe Turris could be had for a couple prospects and a pick and he will turn this ship around…you will be disappointed.

And for the Iginla trade talk: I will not participate.

With Backlund returning soon and Carson who said to us yesterday that he will be back with the team practicing next week, a couple bodies are going to need to be moved or sent down. Horak has been consistent and has earned his stay so who is it going to be?

Firing: Fire the coach! Is it system play that is hurting this team? Perhaps it is but that means the relatively same core players cause for another coach being let go. So if Brent is let go would Hartsburg be any better? They do think the same game and that may not help this team.

Patience: Although the forward group and 90% of this team is the same from last year, do we just need to be patient and it will get better? I personally go against this; although the second half of last year was good we still did not see any playoff games. The same cannot be done this year, if this team is relying on a great second half again they will be closer to Yakupov than the NHL playoffs.

Maybe we are all over reacting since it is still early but I remember saying that last year.

Which leads us to the question: Should the Flames trade Rene Bourque?

The main problem I have with trading Bourque is making sure we get the offence back. I understand the need to trade Bourque; the Flames need a consistent Centre to feed Iggy the puck. Bourque has a tendency to be, well . . . inconsistent. He needs to play game in and game out.

We need to trade Bourque simply because the Flames need playmaker who can play well with Iginla. The problem is the price. We obviously cannot get a first line centre for him straight across. What we can get is a young playmaking centre with tons of potential. So yes, we need to deal Bourque, but don't expect the moon. Maybe the stars. I really feel the Flames need a shake up, and the best asset we have is Bourque. It is nothing personal, just plain business.

Here is Dearen's point of view:

When I think of Rene Bourque, I think of a big right winger who can score 30 goals. When I watch Bourque, I see a big right winger who doesn’t use his size, and at times looks lazy, and lately he has been frustrating to watch. Sure he has five goals already but that says nothing about how he has played as a whole. With four more years at $3.33 million, other teams may look at him as a relatively affordable second line winger. So I say “yes,” trade Rene Bourque; but when? That depends!
This team needs a wake-up call and needs more consistent players. Bourque has been everything but consistent in the last two years; bad penalties, bad puck possession stats, and he looks disinterested at times. But I believe teams would be very interested in his services based on his production and his size. A change of scenery may be the best thing for Rene, but in a couple of years, he will probably need one again, as I believe that he is a hard player to motivate.

Value-wise, I believe it will be tough to get someone in return who will immediately replace his goals. The teams who want to add Bourque are teams looking to add to their roster. So a prospect and a pick may be the route teams will want to go, and at the moment that won’t cut it for Feaster. On the bright side, if this team is indeed out of contention come deadline day, Bourque’s value may peak and a first round drafts pick plus more is attainable. Look at Dustin Penner at last year’s deadline. Bourque could be similar at a cheaper price. Also teams may like that he has some term left to ensure they get a player moving forward in return. So if you can’t trade him now, you may be pleasantly surprised in March if this team is indeed out of the playoff picture.

Mike Walsh's point of view on the same question:

This is an interesting question, because Bourque is one of a few players on the team who actually has some value. His age, cap hit and potential to be a 30-goal scorer all lead to teams wanting him. The rumours have had Bourque heading to Montreal, Columbus, Colorado, Boston and the Rangers. But would I trade him?

The only way I would trade Rene Bourque is if I could get someone back who is just as good up front, and is someone who can skate better and is maybe just a tad younger. Bourque is not a good enough asset to land a #1 centre for the Flames, and will not add a first rounder or one of their better prospects to land one, at least not right now. Bourque, as inconsistent as he is, is still the 2nd best goal scorer on the team behind Iggy. A lot of the Flames' playoff hopes are in Bourque’s hands, because Iginla’s line will be matched up against the oppositions best defenders, which leaves Bourque’s line in a better match-up for the Flames; hopefully anyways. Despite the rumours, I’d be shocked if Bourque was moved.

What I am referring to is all of the Rene Bourque rumours. There have been many guesses of many teams, ranging from Boston to Columbus or Montreal.
I have heard two in particular about the Blue Jackets. First let's discuss the names. The main one I have heard is Antoine Vermette and a second round pick. We all know that rumours are there just that. The other name is Derick Brassard, but this is mostly just speculation, which does make sense. Derick is a gifted young centre with tons of potential.

Then there is the rumour of the Boston Bruins. No names mentioned. It has to make you wonder what the possibilities are. I wonder about having Brad Marchand, but this is just speculation.

As you know, rumours are just rumours. Like I said, I have heard it all -- from Bourque going anywhere to Bourque going nowhere. There are very few people I trust, but the ones I do trust, I report. They of course always warn me that it might not happen. But when I get told enough of one team talking with the Flames; where there is smoke, there is usually fire. I have been told enough times that the Jackets are talking to the Flames. Who is going? Flames vs Avalanche

Flames vs Avalanche

8pm @ Scotiabank Saddledome

SNET-CGY & SN960theFan

Tonight we get to see if the Flames can hand the Avalanche their first road loss of the season. With a road record of 6-0-0 and being a +6 in goal differential the Avs are feeling good!

The Flames on the other hand have had a couple good performances but have very little to show for it in points and goals. Glencross one of our better players to date players is a game time decision; but look for him not to play and see Hagman draw back in. Another guy we could see back in the line-up is Babchuk.

The hard shooting blue liner has seen very little game action this year. I know many people feel he is a bad signing but in my opinion he just has not been used properly. Anton is a #6 defence man with a good shot for the power play. At times last year he showed that he can be an above average d-man in his own zone, but you can’t rely on him for that. Give Babchuk his 12 minutes of ice time and let him blast bombs on the power play. I know that is all he is good for so I am not sure why the team and fans are so upset and expect so much more?

If you think the rumours are running rampant now; let us hope the Flames don’t lose tonight! If that is the case expect the rumours to climb to a new high starting tomorrow. With Feaster stating that he will not wait to make changes and other teams looking to shake things up (Columbus, WPG & Montreal just to name a few).

What is my take? Simple if Feaster can make the team better for this year, he will do so. Feaster and the Flames brass are committed to making the playoffs this year. With around 20 million coming off the books come July 1st, Feaster will review and re-structure the team then. But for now he wants to win and find players who can help this team today. That is why Bourque has not been moved; a lot of rumours around him and teams have made offers but Feaster will only move him if he gets real quality in return which does not hurt the Flames. Bourque has been average at best and his puck possession stats are bad so maybe a scenery change is what is needed for him. Also Brodie’s value is high and Feaster may look add him if a deal makes sense.

On the Turris front: Again more speculation that CGY has made an offer to Phoenix, but what does Calgary have that would seriously interest Phoenix? Phoenix won’t sell Turris for cheap and Phoenix can’t add more salary.

Flames lack intensity and drive, the team needs a real fourth line that does some dirty work and grinds out some tough minutes. Although I like Jackman, having this slow fourth line with a floater as your center will not get the job done.

I expect a Flames win tonight!

GO FLAMES GO

The team is underachieving in all categories, especially in offensive goals. The offence has gone barren, and basically Kipper and the Tower have to be almost perfect every night.

Jay has told the media and the fans that he will not stand idle during this slump, and his cards may be forced right now. The problem is that the cards he has right now are not so good. Most of the Flames assets are not for sale.

The biggest asset that seems to be available right now is Bourque. The main problem is what the Flames can get for him. Some of the players I would like the Flames to acquire are on the Rangers, Canadiens, Wings, and Leafs. This is just a collection of players who I think would be good acquisitions.

Toronto

I would love the Flames to pry Bozak away from the Leafs. He is a smooth-skating center who has great puck-handling skills. He just might be the man who can get Iggy and Tangs the puck.

Rangers

One word: Dabinsky. He is a terrific young player, who is not too expensive yet, who has lots and lots of talent. I also like his versatility; being able to be shuffled between centre and left wing. I am sure the price will be steep.

Habs

With all the injuries they have, they really don't make a good trading partner. They pretty much need the same things as the Flames. But in a fantasy world, I would love to grab Tomas Plekanec. The problem is the cap hit, and he is probably the Habs' best player right now. A more logical name would be Max Pacioretty, although he is not a centre.

Wings

The one player that comes to mind with the Wings is Jiri Hudler. I think Jiri is a skilled player who could excel with the Flames especially. He would be given a better chance to succeed, with his ice time probably being doubled. But I doubt the Wings would let him go.

There you have it: the players this blogger would love to pick up. There are more options to trade with JBO. The problem with him is his cap hit, being slightly over $6.5 million. Teams are going to have to send back cap with this trade, and the Flames may have to entice them by offering a little more. The Bourque option seems a little more feasible because of his contract. It is a lot easier to move $3.6 mil than $6.67 mil.

Yes, I feel Jay really needs to shake up this team right now. The Flames cannot afford to fall behind so early. There are too many players taking the night off. Iggy is struggling, and the team has no one else picking it up. Even Glencross was struggling. Olli right now is the best forward, and really could use some help.

On the defence side, they need to get the puck to the forwards more quickly. There also seem to be too many giveaways in our own zone at the wrong time. Although there is never a good time to do a giveaway. They have to be smarter with the puck, and the forwards will have to help the defence by giving them clear targets.

They have to be more organized in their own zone. There are too many times where the are caught running around in the defensive zone. The team has to remember their assignments and stick to them. Jaybo and Gio have pitch in at the right time, and not get caught giving away too many 2-on-1 chances on the other end.

Chances are needed. Only time will tell what Feaster has in mind.

But at the end of the day Richards chose John Tortorella over playing with Iginla. Although he would have been a nice addition and Iginla would have had his number one center for the first time, fans are not as upset about that decision as the Tim Erixon one.

Erixon a former Calgary Flames first round draft pick made a scene that not many will forget. Refusing to sign and making the Flames brass fly out to New York to meet with his agent hours before the deadline. If he did not sign he would go back in to the draft and the Flames would be left with nothing. So Feaster pulled the trigger with a very adamant New York Rangers team who Tim’s dad once played for. The Rangers interestingly enough were able to sign him quick; in return the Flames got two second round picks (Granlund & Wotherspoon) and forward Roman Horak. Looking back at the fiasco maybe this didn’t turn out so bad. With that move, yes we lost a highly touted prospect but gained three possible futures NHL’ers and filling our prospect cupboard a bit.

Now we know the reason why he wouldn’t sign here; Tim Erixon felt he had no chance to make the Flames squad as there were too many d-men. Ironically he was originally cut by the Rangers but with injuries he was called back up and will find himself back in Calgary with his new team.

The Rangers come in off a convincing 4-0 win over Vancouver, not an easy task to do. That however was their first win of the year, after four games they come in here with four points in the bank and will look to continue adding to that.

Flames also come off of a win in Calgary in Tuesday where they downed the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames will have to be better if they want to knock off the New York Rangers. NY clearly has more offensive power than Edmonton and has a goaltender who can steal some wins for them. The Flames will have to be structured and capitalize on their chances, while maintaining good defensive pressure on the likes of Gaborik and Richards.

The game starts at 7:30pm and I am sure we will hear some boo`s for Erixon. One team is full of hope and youthful excitement. While the other one needs to find their game fast at the start of this six game home stand.

I expect a fast start; Calgary will want to jump on the Oilers who played last night. But with all the youth and it being the battle of Alberta I expect the Oilers to match that excitement. Expect a scrap early, Eager will want to make his presence felt and some are suggesting Leblond will be dressed for the Flames. So expect an early brawl if that is the case, another player to watch is Glencross; always comes to play against his former team and he has been good this year.

Jokinen will have to play against the RNH-Eberle-Hall line. I will watch this closely but in my opinion looking at the match ups, the Oilers should stand little chance against the Flames five on five. Now we all know that means the Flames would have to play to their potential and play a full 60 minutes. Let us hope we don’t see a repeat of the first BOA of last year.

Another return we could see is Brendan Morrison, the veteran center seems ready to go. And if the #1 line struggles early you could see BMo jump in and replace Moss on the first line alongside Iginla and Tanguay. Although having a rusty Morrison centering the not 100% Iginla may not be the best choice.

I can’t wait for the game and a good one it should be, many Oilers fans will mix in the C of red.

GO FLAMES GO
