Originally released in August 2019, the R2 SPT Transceivers were developed exclusively by Flashpoint (there is no Godox branded version available), and manage to provide a number of convenient features, high build quality and performance, all into a very economical package.

For anyone looking for a simple manual flash trigger set to fire speedlights or studio lights, the R2 SPT now provide an easy choice. As they should work with just about any camera and flash, and are also directly compatible with the most common (Godox/Flashpoint) flash system.

Also people already using the Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System may find having at least one R2 SPT Transceiver in their kit pretty handy as well. Whether its for shutter release, stronger signal, or an inexpensive receiver unit to fire non Flashpoint/Godox enable lights.

The R2 SPT Transceivers not only fire your manual flashes though, they will provide Remote Manual Power Control when acting as a Transmitter to Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System enabled flashes. 

They unfortunately can NOT add Remote Power Control to your NON Flashpoint R2 / Godox X enabled flashes when acting as a receiver though.

The Flashpoint R2 SPT are Transceivers, in this case with the Transmitter and Receiver units being exactly the same device. A manual switch on the side simply assigns each unit as Transmitter (TX) or Receiver (RX) as required.

Being Single Firing Pin only, the R2 SPT do not provide TTL or HSS, though this allows them to work universally, as well as providing longer range.

Acting as a Transmitter to R2 enabled flashes, the R2 SPT will provide Remote Manual Power Control. (Not when acting as a Receiver though).

Acting as a Transmitter and Receiver Set, the R2 SPT will work with just about any camera and speedlight having a standard hotshoe and foot. Studio lights will require an appropriate sync cord to connect with the Receiver.

The R2 SPT simply fire the remote flashes in sync with the camera shutter. And radio range is increased to 300m when using R2 SPT as Transmitter and Receiver.

Remote Power Control is not available in this situation. Though each of the 5 individual Groups can be turned ON and OFF remotely from the R2 SPT Transmitter.

An R2 SPT acting as a Transmitter on the camera, can fire, and control the Remote Manual Power Levels of Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System flash units. As well as turn the Modelling Light and Beep ON and OFF remotely.

RX MODE

Functioning as a Receiver unit, the R2 SPT provide an economical way to simply fire you existing non-Flashpoint/Godox studio lights and speedlites in sync with the camera.

Whether using another R2 SPT as the Transmitter, or in combination with your Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System enabled Transmitter or Master flash.

(An optional sync cord is required to attach studio lights).

The R2 SPT provide a 300V safe trigger voltage on both the sync port and hotshoe, so even most older flash units should be safe to use connect to the receiver.

NOTE – In RX Mode all buttons on the R2 SPT (except the SET / TEST Fire Button) require a long press to have any effect. This is so that settings can not be bumped and changed accidentally.

TX MODE

Functioning as a Transmitter unit, the R2 -SPT (being single firing pin) are universal to work on most any camera having a standard hotshoe with a center firing pin.

The R2 SPT feature 5 individual quick access Group Buttons – A / B / C / D / E .

In TX Mode the R2 SPT provide Remote Manual Power Control of Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System flash units. As well as turning the Modelling Light and Beep On and Off remotely.

Only Remote Group Control (ON / OFF) is available when also using R2 SPT as Receivers.

NOTE – Double pressing a Group button turns that Group ON and OFF, and Holding a Group button turns that Group ON only (which is consistent with the Flashpoint R2 PRO II transmitter functionality).

APP MODE

When set to TX Mode, the R2 SPT also feature an APP Mode.

In APP Mode the transmitter only sends a fire signal to the remote flash units and other R2 SPT Receivers. No Remote Power Levels or functions are communicated.

To enter APP mode, while in TX Mode, hold the “GR” button for 3 seconds until “APP ” appears on the LCD display.

The APP mode allows another Flashpoint R2 / Godox X transmitter unit, or Mobile device with Godox APP installed, to be used in hand, only for remotely controlling the power levels etc of the flashes.

You may want to use an alternate Master interface in hand like this, simply because its easier to access when the camera is mounted high on a tripod, or because it offers a more detailed interface and adjustments than the R2 SPT Master interface provides.

NOTE – The R2 SPT do not have Bluetooth built-in. So a Bluetooth enabled device like the R2 PRO II or A1 / M1 will still required if you wanted to use the smartphone APP.

SHUTTER RELEASE – TRX MODE

The R2 SPT Transceivers provide a shutter release function which can be used to remotely fire a camera’s shutter.

And in TRX Mode the R2 SPT also provide the more complex function of firing both a remote camera shutter, and remote flash units in sync together, and with just one transceiver unit attached to the camera.

(Where previously a second shutter release set (transmitter & receiver units) would be required to trigger the camera shutter, plus another transmitter attached to the camera hotshoe to fire the remote flashes).

To fire both remote camera shutter and flashes, the R2 SPT transceiver must be set to TRX mode, and both mounted on the camera’s hotshoe, as well as connected via an appropriate shutter release cord.

To set the R2 SPT transceiver to TRX mode, set the switch to RX mode, and hold the SET button for 3 seconds until “TRX” is show on the LCD display.

Using a second R2 SPT Transceiver (set to TX mode) in hand as the remote shutter release button (as shown above) provides the most range, up to 300m.

Though any of the Flashpoint R2 / Godox X System transmitter or master flash units can also be used as the shutter release in hand (as shown below).

So effectively even owning just one R2 SPT Transceiver could be very hand for many people already using the Flashpoint R2 / Godox X Flash System.

TTL / HSS WITH SHUTTER RELEASE

Unfortunately there is no TTL or HSS possible with only an R2 SPT Transceiver attached to the camera hotshoe acting as TRX shutter release.

If TTL or HSS is required with remote shutter release, a TTL Transmitter must always be mounted on the camera hotshoe, and basically a second pair of R2 SPT Transceivers would be required as a separate remote shutter release set.

TRX MODE CHANNELS

Also an issue Flashpoint ran into while developing the R2 SPT Transceivers was that the shutter release unit in hand would unwantedly Test fire the remote flashes early, as you tried to release the camera shutter. The flashes could not recycle fast enough then to fire again when needed when the shutter was open.

To avoid this issue the TRX mode was set up so that the shutter release remote in hand must be set to one Channel higher than the TRX unit attached to the camera and remote flashes are set to (as illustrated below).

This way the TX in hand can not directly communicate with the remote flashes, and fire them early.

Though the TX in hand can be briefly set back one Channel to directly Test fire the lights while taking light meter readings, and remotely adjusting power levels.

BUTTON FUNCTIONS

Although not the ideal situation (as a lot more useful functionality was ultimately squeezed into the R2 SPT Transceivers than originally intended) access to a few of the functions is not obvious unless you know actually where they are –

– APP Mode – In TX Mode, Hold the “GR” button for 3 seconds to enter, and release.
– TRX Mode – In RX Mode, Hold the “SET / TEST” button for 3 seconds to enter, and release.

– LCD Backlight Stay On – Hold Group buttons A & C for more than 2 seconds to enter, and release.
– Factory Reset – Hold the “-” and “+” buttons for more than 2 seconds.

– In TX Mode – Double Pressing a Group Button – Turns that Group ON and OFF.
– In TX Mode – Holding a Group Button – Turns that Group on only.

Also accessing and adjusting Channel and ID can take a little getting used to. Its intentional that you must hold the Channel and ID buttons for 2 seconds before accessing them so that they are not changed accidentally.

And because a speedlite mounted on the transceiver hotshoe in RX Mode can block access to the Group Letter, “-” , “+”, and “SET” buttons, its also possible to adjust the Group, Channel, and ID, using only the corresponding “GR”, “CH”, and “ID”, buttons, by pressing them multiple times to scroll through to the desired setting.

PASS THROUGH HOTSHOE

Although when used as a Transmitter mounted on the camera hotshoe, the R2 SPT Transceiver does actually have an active (single pin) hotshoe available on top, this hotshoe was predominantly designed only for use when the R2 SPT is used as a Receiver unit.

That is mainly just because any flash or extra transmitter unit mounted on top of the R2 SPT will likely block access to the Transmitters LCD display and Master control buttons.

Both units being based on Godox’s AD600 PRO, and original AD600, and fully compatible with the complete Godox / Flashpoint R2 system of radio enabled strobes.

And what a huge transformation the 600 PRO now offer over the previous lights, both in performance and sleek new design.

The 600 PRO are only Godox / Flashpoint’s second generation TTL cordless strobe, and already challenging the best alternatives available. In many ways now setting a benchmark for others to follow.

The 600 PRO now feature exceptionally fast recycle times, powerful 38W LED modelling light, and color accuracy to offer a serious alternative to traditional AC powered monolights.

This 600 PRO are really the first cordless strobe available to provide all of the most required functions into one unit, for both studio and location use.

And that’s mainly because no one else is offering a cordless strobe with the option of a remote Extension Head. And having these 2 options in the one light has been a large part of the success of the original 600, and now the 600 PRO.

An optional AC power adapter is also available for extended use.

There are also significant refinements in the strobes swivel design and modifier mount, which both make the 600 PRO now much more enjoyable to use.

The flash tube design and spacing has also been refined, which is discussed in more detail further bellow.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

A major feature of the Godox X / Flashpoint R2 System has become the cross platform support for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus / Panasonic, Pentax, and Leica camera systems, supporting both TTL and HSS.

The auto sensing radio receiver mode built into the 600 PRO, and most of the Flashpoint R2 / Godox X system strobes, allows different camera brands to be used with the same set of remote strobes at the same time.

The recent R2 Pro / Xpro transmitters have provided a big improvement in the system, with a very user friendly interface. And even more refined transmitter options are on the way.

The provided TCM function is also a significant feature, allowing quick initial TTL exposures to be converted to manual power settings for further refinement and consistency.

Previuously when looking at a new TTL strobe, examining the TTL exposures, and radio trigger performance, would be some of the highest priorities, though these are already quite a well known quantity with the Godox / Flashpoint R2 System.

As a very brief overview, a large part of the success of the original XPLOR / AD600 has been fairly solid TTL exposures, and a simple though reliable radio system from the beginning.

There are a number of intricacies and ongoing generally small loose ends which are usually ironed out over time. And it would be best to look at the post on the transmitter or master flash version you intend to use to see more discussion on these.

If you’re a wedding / event photographer looking for an integrated system with a master speedlight on camera, you will also need to use a Flashpoint / Godox speedlight, so I would suggest trying those first to see if they are going to meet your needs.

IN COMPARISON

The original XPLOR / AD600B, TTL or Manual versions, are not being replaced by the 600 PRO at this stage. They will still be sold along side the new version as a more economical alternative. So I have tried to include something of a comparison between the strobes in this review.

The Jinbei HD 610 (Branded ORLIT RT 610 here) have also been included in places, as they are generally the other main comparable alternative people have been weighing up between.

Though keep in mind, although the RT 610 in many respects weigh up favorably compared with the original XPLOR, they unfortunately do not offer a remote head option, and the radio system is not as mature or refined as Godox / Flashpoint’s at this stage.

SIZE

The 600 PRO’s body is actually now slightly longer than the original –

Though with the new included compact reflector, and slimline swivel design, the 600 PRO comes out considerably more compact overall.

Its clear the designers were conscious of the demand for a unit that is as compact as possible for transport and use on location etc.

The 600 PRO’s included compact reflector is more of a wide angle umbrella style reflector though, so its not a completely an apples to apples comparison anymore.

Supplied with a similar compact size reflector though, the Jinbei / RT 610 starts to appear quite a bit larger overall in comparison.

WEIGHT

The 600 PRO may be more compact, though it has actually added 433 grams of weight over the original 600.

There is no free lunch unfortunately, and the trade off for fast recycle times, and powerful LED light etc, is some added weight due to the additional metal heat sinks and cooling required.

The new metal swivel and refined modifier mount would also contribute some weight.

INTERFACE

The 600 PRO’s LCD interface is also a nice improvement over the original.

The LCD screen is the same size, though the resolution is higher, and important information like the Group and Power Level display have been emphasized.

The buttons are now spaced further apart for easier access, and the larger control dial makes adjustments considerably quicker and easier.

I have noticed a trend with Godox simplifying things where possible, and so the Canon and Nikon Optic Wireless modes are no longer provided. Basic S1 and S2 optic receiver modes are still available though.

Overall the interface is very clean, simple, and fast to use, which is hard to fault.

There is a nice simple custom function menu, with numerous options available. The Alternate firing and Mask functions being nice new features.

Personally I would have liked to have seen something of a second LCD screen on the opposite side of the strobe as well. Mainly just to display the current group, and confirm when remotely adjusted power levels are changing correctly on the strobe.

And an option to hear a beep when power levels are changing on the strobe would be nice as well, particularly for the times when you can’t see the LCD screen.

BATTERY

Possibly the most controversial change (at least for current XPLOR / AD600 strobe owners) has been the change from a 14.4 volt, to a 28.8 volt battery system.

Godox have apparently made the change to allow for the strobes very fast recycle times, which is certainly a significant upgrade. One trade off though is battery capacity has now decreased from an exceptional 500 full power shots, down to around 360.

The other issue for current XPLOR / AD600 owners is that the new battery is not compatible with the original strobes. And that adds to the charger, AC power supply, remote head, and bulb all not being compatible between units. So this may see people eventually moving completely to one camp or the other.

The 600 Pro battery is quite similar in size to the original, and and a little lighter at 566 grams, verses 618 grams.

Once again a battery level indicator is built-in (as well as provided on the strobes LCD display).

The battery mount has now adopted a metal pin system very similar to the one used with the EVOLV / AD200 modular flash head.

And the backing plate on the strobe itself is now plastic, rather than metal like the original strobe. This appears fairly solid though, and its still fast and easy to attach and remove the battery.

As with the original strobe, an optional AC power adapter is also available, which is mounted in place of the battery.

FLASHTUBE

To allow for a larger and unobstructed LED modelling light, Godox have moved to a more traditional horseshoe style flash tube.

Though this is still a convenient and easily removable plug in design, which also allows for the remote Extension Head to plug in in place of the bulb.

The shape of the flash tube, spacing, and frosted front diffuser all have effects on the quality of light projected, which is discussed further below under the Power & Light Pattern heading.

The flash tube has also been spaced out further from the modifier mount, so that it will now protrude further into modifiers. And this can have a big impact on the spread and light output in various soft boxes and modifiers.

With the change of flash tube shape though this may not appear to have actually created much advantage. Though as shown further below, when using an average width Bowen’s speedring this can still make a noticeable difference.

LED MODELING LIGHT

The 600 PRO’s 38W LED modelling light is a substantial upgrade from the 10W used in the original 600, and now brings the battery powered strobe far more inline with the capability of AC powered studio lights.

The LED has full manual control from 1% to 100%, as well as Proportional Mode to follow the strobes manual power levels. And can be set to run constantly, or intermittently (switching off just while the strobe fires and recycles).

Measured in a double diffused Glow ParaPop 38″ softbox, the 600 PRO’s LED provided a light meter reading of 0.6 stops more light than the Godox QT600 II with traditional 150W halogen bulb. So comparable to around a 230W traditional bulb.

In the same softbox the 600 PRO was also 0.6 stops more than the 20W LED in the Jinbei / ORLIT RT 610.

And 1.6 stops more light than the 10W LED in the original XPLOR / AD600.

The color temperature of the 600 PRO’s LED is a slightly unusual 4600K (measured at 4679K).

And the CRI (Ra) reading has also gone backwards a little from the original strobe, from around 93.8 back to around 91.

Note the ORLIT RT 610 is only at 86.3, with its warmer tungsten balanced temperature.

The 600 PRO’s LED appears to be able to run constantly at full power for some time. Though after a few minutes at full power the fan will go into high speed mode, which does make some noise.

So combined with the CRI, the PRO’s LED doesn’t appear to be aimed at high quality video use at this stage. Though its probably fine for some impromptu filming.

Overall the 600 PRO’s LED now appears to work very well as a modelling light.

MODIFIER MOUNT

The 600 PRO’s new S-type modifier mount has improved significantly over the original strobes.

With what appears to be a combination of using stiffer spring tabs, and just getting the tolerances right, modifiers now have a very neat and firm fit. No more rattling reflectors or sagging softboxes.

I may be just lucky, though every modifier I have tried fits straight on, and with a nice firm fit.

With the Jinbei strobes in comparison it sometimes requires filing down the outer diameter of the bayonet lugs, just to fit the speedring into the strobe mount. And once on they still rattle around.

So this new mount is a great step forward, and really makes the 600 PRO feel a lot more refined.

SWIVEL MOUNT

One of the nicest physical improvement over the original strobes is also the new smooth action, stepless, metal swivel mount.

This is really a very simple design, just using a disc made of some type of friction material sandwiched in the middle of the swivel joint. Something like a miniature grip head.

This works well, and would hold a 120cm deep parabolic without creeping down. And for any larger modifiers it would be better to attach those directly to the light stand in any case.

There is no friction at all once you release the swivel’s handle though, so the strobe and modifier will basically free fall if not supported before loosening the handle.

In comparison the Jinbei swivels are a slightly more sophisticated design, always providing some resistance even when loosened. Which is surely safer and feels a bit more refined.

The large ON / OFF switch, now relocated to the bottom of the strobe is a nice improvement as well. It also switches off quickly now, though still requires a 2 second hold to switch on.

One small issue with the strobes swivel base is the depth of the hole when attaching to longer baby pin studs like those used on C-stands and Avenger light stands.

The 600 PRO swivel base does actually mount really nicely on these, its just that there is only 1 or 2mm at most, covering past the recessed section of the stud.

That’s not really an issue on light stands where the weight of the strobe is forcing it down onto the stud, though it makes me nervous if using an Avenger drop down pin on the end of a boom arm where gravity is pulling the strobe down.

To fix this one option is to file more of a chamfer on the end of the drop down pin like shown here, so that it goes a bit further into the swivel base hole.

The light shouldn’t fall off the stud completely in any case, though it would save giving someone a fright if it dropped a little and propped sideways on the stud.

Otherwise the 600 PRO’s swivel fits securely without movement even on the C-stands . Where the Jinbei / ORLIT RT 610 will rock a little on the stud even with the thumbscrew fully tight, which is really not great.

The hole in the side of the 600 PRO’s swivel base can be used when attaching the strobe to a light stand, during remote head use, which appears to be a good idea.

This was an issue with the original strobe sitting out too far from the stand (unless you could rig up a mounting stud with a 90 degree elbow).

The 600 PRO swivel handle is once again plastic (which has not been ideal in the past). It does feel more solid, though it does still flex a little.

The handles metal insert is now shaped like a regular nut though at least. As previously the handle could strip on the round threaded insert, and leave you with a broken handle that is very difficult to remove.

If using larger modifiers often it may still be best to just swap the handle with a metal one yourself anyway.

The umbrella mount provides clearance on 8mm umbrella shafts, and just uses a simple spring tab to place a little tension on the umbrella shaft.

Some people don’t like the way this type of mount allows the umbrella shaft to sag down, and move around. While others have said its a good thing that the umbrella will come out of the mount freely if there is a gust of wind, effectively saving the strobe from damage.

One good thing is the umbrella mount is now a separate part which is screwed on, so Godox or third parties could possibly provide other options later.

There is no longer a bulky handle built in to the swivel mount like the original strobes have. Though inexpensive handles like the one shown below can be purchased on Ebay etc, which should do the job fine if needed.

And if holding the strobe at head height or higher, its generally much easier to use a pole or monopod than to hold your arms up high for any period anyway.

CARRY CASE

Once again the XPLOR 600 PRO comes with a fairly nice carry case. And now much more compact than with the original strobes. The design has been revised, and being smaller makes the sidewalls and overall case significantly more rigid.

The strobe now fits into the case with the reflector attached, and a supplied end cap for the reflector protects the flash tube. The battery must be detached from the strobe though to fit the strobe in.

(Ideally though it would be nice to have rigid plastic hard cases supplied at this stage).

COLOR & CONSISTENCY

Below is a quick overview of the color and consistency results as tested with a Sekonic C-700 color meter.

The XPLOR PRO’s new Color mode is only available when using manual power levels, and outside of HSS mode.

Also when using Color Consistency mode with the 600 PRO, the strobe acts partially like a voltage controlled flash, so whenever changing to a lower power level you need to press the test fire button to release the excess energy in the capacitors. There is no auto dump.

In Color Consistency mode the XPLOR 600 PRO ranged from 5435K at full power, to 5624K at 1/32 power.

A total variation of 189K, which is possibly just within Godox’s spec of +/- 100K. (Though a bit outside the +/- 75K spec Flashpoint have stated at times).

CRI (Ra) readings are above 98 at all a power levels, and the Green / Magenta balance is mostly neutral, with a slight 0.1 Magenta tint only showing around 1/128 power level.

Please Note – The readings below are just provided as an indication. Results may vary from strobe to strobe, and with different meters, and test conditions etc.

XPLOR 600 PRO – REGULAR MODE

In regular mode the XPLOR 600 PRO ranged from 5430K at full power, to 5788K at 1/16 power.

A total variation of 358K, which again is within Godox’s spec of 5600K +/- 200K.

Variation from shot to shot is still fairly minimal.

CRI (Ra) readings are also above 98 at all a power levels, and a slight Magenta tint creeping in.

XPLOR 600

The original XPLOR 600 ranged from a cooler 5688K at full power, to 6435K at 1/256 power.

A total variation of 747K, which is actually well outside of Godox’s spec of 5600K +/- 200K.

Though again variation between shots is still mostly minimal, which is generally the most important factor.

CRI (Ra) readings are also above 98, and slightly more Magenta tint is creeping in.

JINBEI / ORLIT RT 610

In Normal mode (not Freeze mode) the ORLIT RT 610 ranged from 5408K at 1/16 power, to 5790K at 1/128 power.

A total variation of 382K, which is just within Jinbei’s spec of 5600K +/- 200K.

Variation from shot to shot is again mostly minimal.

CRI readings (Ra) are mostly around 97.6, and a slight Green tint is starting to show around 1/16 and 1/32 power.

FLASH DURATIONS

Being an IGBT strobe the 600 PRO natively provide fairly fast T0.1 flash durations, stated as 1/220s at full power, to 1/10100s at 1/256 power.

Looking at it now though, it is a little surprising Godox did not also include a Freeze Mode with faster durations, as this is the only thing stopping the 600 PRO completely knocking it out of the park on almost every level.

Measuring the flash durations with the Sekonic L-858D light meter I found most of the 600 / PRO stated durations to be fairly accurate, mainly just the full and minimum power were a little bit optimistic.

Interestingly the Flashpoint Rapid 600 / Godox QT600 was actually reading much faster at full power than the specs state, so I need to look into that further.

If you’re wanting to compare the specs with other strobes, keep in mind the durations are often stated as T0.5 times, not T0.1. So I have also included the T0.5 times for the 600 PRO in second pair of graphs below.

RECYCLE TIMES

The 600 PRO recycle times are genuinely fast. A second or just under at full power, and less than half a second at 1/2 power.

That’s fast enough to basically shoot single frames whenever you want to at 1/2 power.

At 1/16th power the 600 PRO will keep up with 10 frames per second.

And the strobe will still allow 100 shots at 1/1 power before over temperature protection comes in. And again 50 shots at 1/1 in HSS mode like the original XPLOR.

And that seems pretty impressive considering the extra heat created when firing over twice as fast as the original strobes.

POWER AND LIGHT PATTERNS

Considering the impressive recycle times of the 600 PRO, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to suspect Godox may have tweaked the overall power output to allow for that (if so they wouldn’t be the first).

To cut a long story short though, the power output of the 600 PRO does appear to be the same as the original strobes, as Godox have stated.

In modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes the light output tends to be a little more than the original strobes, due to the different flash tube style and spacing.

The compact 5″ reflector supplied with the 600 PRO appears to be much more of a wide angle umbrella style reflector, than the more focused 7″ reflector supplied with the original XPLOR 600 strobes.

And that supplied 5″ reflector, providing a broader even light pattern, is nice, though over a stop less bright than the original 600 with supplied 7″ reflector.

Where this gets tricky though, is placing the original 7″ reflector on the 600 PRO does not focus, and boost the light output to match the original 600.

So Flashpoint are currently looking into different 7″ reflector options that may suit the 600 PRO better.

Having said all of that, the 600 PRO with 5″ reflector is much like the Jinbei / ORLIT RT 610 with supplied 5.5″ reflector. And even going back to the original Rovelights, many people have preferred to use them with the smaller reflector just for convenience, regardless of output.

As mentioned previously, the 600 PRO’s flash tube has now been spaced out further from the modifier mount, to improve penetration into speedring and modifiers.

And as show below, with an average Bowens style speedring, the 600 PRO’s flash tube can often be 100% exposed with a 180 degree spread of light.

Where in the same situation almost half of the original strobes flash tube is blocked from directing light out to the sides.

Also looking at the bare flash tubes, the horseshoe style tube of the 600 PRO natively directs a larger ring of light to the sides, all the way around.

And the frosted front diffuser on the face of the bulb cuts down and diffuses the light being projected directly forward.

When combined with the speedring the 600 PRO flash tube is still projecting a lot of light directly outward, which is going to help fill larger, and shallow modifiers, and strip boxes etc.

And even in a relatively small 38″ ParaPop softbox below, you can start to see the broader even spread of light. And slightly greater intensity pushing light out further.

The 22″ beauty dish equalizes things more, though the different light pattern is noticeable from the 600 PRO tube.

And looking at the 600 PRO with 5″ reflector, there is a much broader spread of light. Though it doesn’t have the focus and intensity of the original XPLOR with 7″ reflector.

Projected into an umbrella the 600 PRO and 5″ reflector provide virtually full coverage, and much more even light than the hot spot created with the XPLOR and 7″ reflector. (Side view here as well).

LIGHT OUTPUT

Measuring the light output I have again included the Jinbei HD 610 / ORLIT RT 610 in the comparison, which is also a good example of the more commonly spaced horseshoe flash tube style configuration found in many regular AC studio strobes.

(The Jinbei / ORLIT’s removable frosted flash tube cover can also effect outcomes if removed).

NOTE – Although the light meter readings below where taken at full power, the images below where shot at 1/8 power (otherwise they would be blown out). And the RT 610 was down 0.3 to 0.4 stops at 1/8 power compared to the other lights, that’s why those images may look darker than the meter readings suggest.

For simplicity all images where shot at the same distance of 4′ (120cm) to the light itself. The lights where not moved back to account for the length of larger reflectors being attached.

SUPPLIED REFLECTORS

The focused 7″ reflector with the original XPLOR meters a significant 1.4 stops ahead of the much more broad light pattern of the 600 PRO and 5″ reflector.

And the RT 610 with 5.5″ reflector is somewhat similar pattern to the 600 PRO (just 0.2 stops ahead).

7″ REFLECTOR

With the XPLOR 7″ reflector mounted to the 600 PRO, the result was still 1.2 stops below the original XPLOR. The PRO still providing a very broad spread of light.

Though the RT 610 with 7″ reflector now matches the XPLOR.

So I tried all of the 7″ reflectors I have from other strobes etc on the 600 PRO, and the best result was only 0.2 stops brighter (using a Phottix Indra500 7″ reflector).

So possibly I was just a bit unlucky so far, otherwise Flashpoint and Godox may possibly need to create a dedicated 7″ reflector specifically designed to maximise the 600 PRO’s output.

5″ REFLECTOR

Mounting the 600 PRO 5″ reflector on each strobe –

This provides a better umbrella reflector style result with the original XPLOR than using the 600 PRO reflector as above.

45° LONG FOCUS REFLECTOR

The other main reflector options available to focus the light and increase output are generaly the 45° Long Focus Reflector (11″), and the 70° Magnum Reflector (14″) below.

And the 600 PRO now does pretty well with the 45° Long Focus, at 0.3 stops behind the XPLOR.

The light pattern is more of a gradual fall off though, rather than the crisp edge which is likely more unique to the original 600.

The 45° Long Focus reflector roughly lights an area the same diameter as the distance its positioned is away.

70° MAGNUM REFLECTOR

With the 70° Magnum Reflector (14″), the original XPLOR is very efficient at 0.8 stops ahead of the 600 PRO.

So if you’re looking to shoot sports or similar at a distance the original XPLOR may be the preferred option here.

The RT 610 is very poor at focusing the light beam in comparison, almost 2 stops behind the 600, and 1 stop behind the 600 PRO.

22″ BEAUTY DISH

In the 22″ beauty dish the 600 PRO starts to show its advantage, with slightly higher output, and even light pattern.

While the RT 610’s more recessed flash tube loses 1/2 a stop of light to the 600 PRO.

38″ GLOW PARAPOP

And with the 38″ Glow ParaPop softbox the 600 PRO is creeping ahead slightly further in output, and with broader even spread of light.

So its in the beauty dish and softboxes the extended flash tube of the 600 PRO really starts to show its advantage.

Bellow are some comparison sample images. I’m not sure how ideal the subject is, though the shadow thrown behind likely provides something more of an indication of how the light is reacting differently.

The exposures were equalized on the face, so this is not a comparison of output. All lights are at 4′ (120cm) from the subject, except the beauty dish set at 3′.

The image below is comparing only the 600 PRO using 5″ and 7″ reflectors.

The next 2 images below are comparing strobes with their standard supplied reflector. The second image just adds a supplied plastic diffuser to the XPLOR 7″ reflector.

The next 3 images below compare each strobe using the same reflector or softbox.

Its really in the larger and shallow softboxes and umbrellas where the difference will likely be more prominent though.

SUMMARY

UPDATE 2022 – When released in early 2018 the XPLOR 600 PRO / Godox AD600 PRO TTL were another game changing light for Godox and Flashpoint, and set a new standard and direction for the lights to come. And they still remain at the top of their class today.

In addition the Godox / Flashpoint radio lighting system has become the most prominent system used worldwide by some margin. And that’s also important when you’re looking at adding compatible products, or ongoing availability of compatible batteries etc.

Since the release of the 600 PRO, Godox and Flashpoint have released smaller 400, 300, 200, and 100Ws cordless strobes, which are all great options as well. It just depends on what will suit your own needs and budget best. And you can mix always and match lights in the system as well.

The 600 PRO remain the main cordless option offering a respectable modelling light though, to provide more of a substitute for traditional AC powered monolights. As well as solid continuous firing ability, and that extra bit of power to help compete with the sun outdoors.

This review was originally published back in 2014, when the Glow ParaPop softboxes first became available from Adorama. And today I still have the original 28″ and 38″ ParaPops, and still find these to be one of the nicest softbox options available for portable lights.

The ParaPops produce a nice even light, and they are very lightweight, fast and easy to pop open and use. And make the most of smaller strobes limited power, particularly compared to the many umbrella frame softboxes which are generally popular now.

They have also held up well over time, and nothing has actually broken in the mostly plastic speedring mechanism (though I do treat them pretty carefully). Replacement speedring mechanism and spare rods are also available now if needed though.

The Glow ParaPops are now only available in the 38″ Version. And include an S-Type Speedring insert, as well as the new OTA mounting system, which is handy for attaching speedlights and smaller lights quickly to the ParaPop, while also providing a pistol grip handle.

Optional egg crate grids are also now available.

Back to the original review (updated for current relevance) –

The Glow ParaPop from Adorama really appear to be an impressive new modifier for using on location. Whether used with portable studio lights, or with regular speedlights.

The first thing that actually stands out about the ParaPop, other than the nice build quality, is how exceptionally lightweight they are. Especially for a softbox with 12 rods.

And apart from that fact that they conveniently pop open and closed quickly, I think that lightness and ease of handling is actually the biggest advantage of using the ParaPop as a location modifier.

Even when using heavier strobes like the original 600Ws Flashpoint RoveLights, I found the ParaPop’s provide a great option for a decent size modifier, because they don’t add too much to the combined weight.

SET UP

The ParaPop open very easily, I’d even go as far as saying they’re fun to snap open. You just pull each rod outwards until they click in place on the speedring. Working your way around the 12 rods only takes a few seconds.

To collapse again there are 2 sets of tabs (or buttons) which you squeeze together to release the rods.

And ideally you would then be able to quickly open and collapse the softbox in place on a light stand, so they can be easily moved around to a new location and quickly popped open again when needed.

BREAK DOWN

Collapsing the softbox is surprisingly where I actually found a bit of trouble, as a lot of the time only 6 of the 12 rods would release easily when squeezing the release tabs.

Though I discovered an easy way to release the rods is simply to place the softbox face down on the floor, and press down on the speedring a little, which then takes some tension off the rods before trying to release them. That way all the rods will release quite easily at once.

Once released you can then quickly wrap the softbox up with the attached velcro strap. And the important time saver here is that there is no need to mess around with removing the front diffuser panels, they can stay in place while the softbox is folded. And that’s a big advantage.

Looking more closely, you can see the triangular metal tabs which hold the rods in place on the speedring. These are spring loaded and retract as you pull a rod into place, and also as you squeeze the release buttons on the back of the speedring to release the rods.

Possibly putting a little dry silicon lubricant on the rod ends would allow them to all release a bit easier.

So apart from a bit of a release issue (easily solved by placing the softbox face down on the floor), the ParaPops are very fast and easy to set up and break down.

INNER DIFFUSER

The ParaPop provide an inner diffusion panel, which can be used in different combinations with or without the front diffuser panel, or removed to provide more light output.

The inner diffuser panel can be a bit fiddly to remove if needed though. They are nicely attached with press studs, which are very easy to assemble, just a bit fiddly to remove.

You really need to get your fingernail in between the press studs to release them, because they haven’t really left a pull tab to release the studs anywhere.

So although very secure, it wouldn’t be easy to be adding and removing the inner diffuser in a hurry too often. If switching between one or two diffusion layers quickly was needed, then removing the front diffuser and leaving the inner would likely be the best option.

MOUNTING STUDIO LIGHTS

The ParaPop are supplied with an S-Type speedring insert for attaching the ParaPop directly to studio lights with a Bowens S-Type mount. And there are optional speedring inserts available for Profoto, Elinchrom, Balcar, and Lumedyne as well.

The Bowens S-Type insert is again very lightweight, and made of relatively thin plastic. The ParaPop itself is very lightweight though, so the insert is still in proportion, and strong enough to support the softbox. And they do feel pretty sturdy still overall.

Even more telling are the three very small screws used to attach the inserts to the ParaPop. I literally had to use a small watchmakers screwdriver to remove these (Update – a screwdriver now comes supplied with ParaPop kit). Again with the weight of the ParaPop these small screws still appear to do the job fine.

The ParaPop combine really nicely with studio lights, though as seen in the image above, there is a caution of an 80 degrees Celsius heat limit. The ParaPop were designed for LED modelling lights not halogen, so care may need to be taken with modelling lights or continuous lights.

MOUNTING COMPACT LIGHTS & SPEEDLIGHTS

UPDATE 2022 – There are basically 2 good options now for mounting compact lights to the ParaPop softbox. Either using –

• A Bowens S-Type speedring insert attached to the ParaPop, and a Glow/Godox S2 Bracket as pictured.
• Or the new OTA mounting system, which is a fast and light weight option, also combining a pistol grip handle and swivel mount.

GLOW / GODOX S2 BRACKET

The Glow/Godox S2 Bracket is a great mounting option as it allows you to standardise all of your lights to the Bowens S-Type mount, and then easily swap the softbox between any of the lights.

And all flashes from the Godox/Flashpoint AD100, 200, 300, and 400 PRO can be clamped into the inexpensive S2 Bracket, along with round head, and regular rectangular head speedlights.

(There are also older S-Type brackets for Bowens and Elinchrom, though they will only mount rectangular speedlights, not the full range of compact flashes like the S2 Bracket).

A nice feature of using the AD200 strobe with the S2 Bracket is that it allows you to slide the flash back and forth in the bracket mount, adjusting the position of the flash tube in the softbox. This can make a big difference in achieving maximum light output, or changing the spread of light produced, for different effects.

OTA MOUNTING SYSTEM

Released in 2022, is also a new OTA mounting system, which can also be used with the smaller Glow HexaPop softboxes.

The OTA system offers a fast and lightweight option to mount speedlights and compact strobes like the AD100 and 200 PRO quickly to the softbox while combining a convenient pistol grip handle and swivel.

And the larger AD300 and 400 PRO can also be mounted using an OTA adaptor ring. Though these strobes then use their own swivel mount, instead of the OTA pistol grip swivel handle. Again the light weight of the ParaPop is a big advantage here because not too much for the strobes included compact swivel.

LIGHT OUTPUT

The ParaPop softbox and Godox / Flashpoint compact lights like the AD200 / Evolve 200 make a really nice combination. As they are equally light weight, and the forward facing flash with no obstructions in front of the flash tube make the most out of the limited (though still very capable) power of the smaller lights.

And using a single diffuser panel I found the ParaPop provides at least a stop more light than the bounce style softboxes like the Westcott Apollo’s. Umbrella frame softboxes like the Glow EZ Lock series are also very popular now, though their center umbrella framework blocks and reduces some of their light output as well.

I haven’t taken a lot of images comparing with other softboxes at this stage. Though for what its worth below is just an indication of the light pattern produced by the ParaPop 38″. Left is with the XPLOR/AD600 PRO strobe, and right is the original XPLOR/AD600.

BUILD QUALITY & DURABILITY

The ParaPop appear very well made, and there is nothing cheap feeling about the materials. The diffuser fabrics are nice quality, as is the main softbox fabric. The black fabric doesn’t let any light through as some other lightweight softbox materials do.

The rod ends even have relatively large and nicely machined alloy tips, unlike some of the nasty sharp tips you find on even some higher end umbrellas.

The rods themselves are fairly flexible and appear to be quite durable. I’m not sure how easily the ParaPop would be damaged if a light stand did go over. Though having quite a number of reasonably flexible rods, there is a chance they may just spring to absorb a lot of the impact. And replacement rods are also available separately now if needed.

Durability of the speedring mechanism itself is the main thing I have been a little unsure about. Though the ParaPop are based on the SMDV diffusers which have been available for a few years now and I have not heard of many complaints with those.

UPDATE 2022 – My speedrings have actually held up well over a number of years now, and still function as they should. Though replacement speedrings are also available separately now if needed.

The ParaPops are also finished off nicely with a very practical padded case, including a shoulder strap. Again the case is light weight, and fits the ParaPop and bracket in well.

SUMMARY

Even in 2022 I still feel the Glow ParaPop are one of the nicest snap open location modifiers available, and certainly worth considering.

The subsequent Glow ParaSnap (also an SMDV design) are no doubt something of a gamechanger, being able to fold flat and swap speedring inserts quickly, though they are not quite as light weight or circular shaped as the 12 ribbed ParaPop.

There are also lot of more economical umbrella frame softboxes like the Glow EZ Lock available now, though I think the convenience and light weight design of the ParaPop is still worth paying for if that’s going to serve your needs better.

The only main limitation of the ParaPop is for hot lights and lights with a halogen modelling light. Otherwise the ParaPop are really enjoyable to use, efficient, and produce nice even light.

QUICK ACCESS GROUP BUTTONS

The R2 PRO II now feature 5 dedicated Group Buttons, as well as regularly used Function Buttons, all located closely around a new larger Main Control Dial.

This allows a number of lights to be adjusted quickly, without constantly reaching some distance back and forth between controls, and allows left or right hand use without blocking the LCD screen in the process.

Regular users should find themselves being able to quickly adjust a number of lights by feel alone (much like you do with your TV remote etc).

QUICK ACCESS FUNCTION BUTTONS

The R2 PRO II now also feature 10 Quick Access Side Function Buttons, allowing direct access to commonly used functions without the need to dig through multiple Menus.

These buttons may appear intimidating at first, though having them available makes it much easier to access functions easily if needed, and if not they can be disregarded.

For convenience and familiarity the Menu Bar Buttons (along the base of the LCD display) are currently set to the same functions as the original R2 PRO / Xpro transmitters.

(This means access to a number of functions are currently duplicated. Though this may change as the Menu Buttons where intended to be assigned to added functionality in the future).

FAST GROUP MANAGEMENT

The R2 PRO II Group Buttons are not only located for fast access, they now also provide shortcuts to manage and switch Groups ON and OFF quickly as required.

This simple combination of button location and added functionality now provides a significant improvement in usability over the original R2 PRO and Xpro transmitters.

• DOUBLE Press – a GROUP Button turns that Group ON and OFF.
• LONG Press – a GROUP Button turns that Group ON only.

• DOUBLE Press – the MODE Button turns ALL Groups OFF (and ALL Back ON).

LARGE TEXT OPTION

The R2 PRO II now also feature a Large Text “BIG NUM” menu option. Providing easier viewing from a distance, or with the camera mounted high on a tripod etc, while still accessing all 5 groups displayed on the LCD screen at once.

The larger again, single group “Magnify Display” option, is also still available as mentioned further bellow.

CURRENT GROUP INDICATOR

For added speed and convenience the R2 PRO II now highlight the letter icon of the Group last used and held in memory.

This indicates which group will be selected for adjustment if directly pressing the SET Button (without selecting/pressing a group button first) for example.

And which single group will be displayed in larger format if pressing the Magnify Display Button.

(This should also be linked to the Single Group Test Fire Button as discussed further bellow).

MAGNIFY DISPLAY

Like the original R2 PRO / Xpro transmitters, the R2 PRO II also feature a Magnify Display option, though now assigned to it’s own dedicated button.

This option shows a single group, larger, and with more detail. Also allowing the group’s Modelling Light, Beep, and Zoom setting to be adjusted on the one screen.

If you’re new to off camera flashes, or just like to keep things simple, this is a great option.

MODELING LIGHT POWER CONTROL

The R2 PRO II now adds remote power control with the receiver flashes modelling lights. In 5% increments, from 10% to 100%, or set to Proportional to automatically follow the strobes power level.

This function is aimed at the XPLOR PRO / Godox AD PRO series of lights (which may require a firmware update to enable). And the AC powered Flashpoint RAPID / Godox QT600IIIM series of lights.

From the main transmitter screen, a Single Press of the Modelling Light Button globally switches All modelling lights ON and OFF together, and individual Groups can also be disabled from the global setting.

Double Pressing the Modelling Light Button enters a separate Modelling Light Screen, where the actual power levels can then be individually set and adjusted.

BEEP CONTROL BY GROUP

Like the Modelling Light control, the Beep function can now be switched ON and OFF via individual Group.

From the main transmitter screen, a Single Press of the Beep Button provides a global ON and OFF for all of the Group’s Beep functions.

Or individual Groups can be disabled from the global setting by selecting the Group for adjustment, before Single pressing the Beep Button.

TCM FUNCTION UPDATED 

TCM (TTL – Convert – Manual) function, allows a fast initial exposure to be made using TTL, and then at the press of a button converted to Manual power levels displayed on the transmitter, for further refinement and consistency between shots in Manual mode.

The R2 PRO II now also allows the converted manual power levels to be quickly reverted back to the initial TTL settings, with at second press of the TCM Button, so further TTL exposures can be made again quickly.

TCM now has its own button. And the Mode button order has also been reversed (M > TTL > OFF) for faster TCM use.

(NOTE – TCM currently provides the best results when using the same model strobes together).

ALL GROUPS UPDATED

The ALL Groups Function selects all the groups to be adjusted together at once.

This can be extremely helpful when making Aperture or ISO changes on the camera, while wanting to retain the current flash exposure levels.

Groups metered with TTL automatically adjust for Aperture and ISO changes though, so the ALL function has now been updated to only select groups which are set to Manual mode, for adjustment together.

(Global TTL adjustment can be made via the cameras FEC setting if needed).

SINGLE GROUP TEST BUTTON

To help speed up flash meter use, or simply identify and test fire a single flash Group on its own, the R2 PRO II now provides a dedicated Single Group TEST Fire Button.

This function is mainly aimed towards the XPLOR PRO / Godox AD PRO series of lights though. As previous lights unfortunately did not have the hardware built included to make this possible.

The Single Group TEST Button will be linked to the Group letter highlighted as the Current Group Indicator, or Group currently selected for adjustment.

SYNC DELAY SETTING / Hi-Sync

Available in the original R2 / X1T, though not included in the later R2 PRO / Xpro, the 1 – 100 µs Sync Delay Setting is once again featured in the R2 PRO II Transmitter.

The Sync Delay Setting allows the Hi-Sync, or Long Burn, method of achieving shutter speeds above the cameras X-Sync limitation to be used.

The Hi-Sync method can provide more light in the frame than regular pulsing HSS, and can also be used to help avoid heat protection limitations in HSS mode. This is also handy when using strobes that do not provide any pulsing HSS mode.

Though this method can add some gradient to the light level across the image frame, and often requires IGBT strobes to be set to full power.

LCD & BUTTON BACKLIGHTING SHORTCUTS

To help in dark environments, the R2 PRO II now provides a degree of button backlighting. As well shortcuts to engage the button and LCD backlighting quickly, without needing to dig into the Menu settings to do this.

To save on battery power though, the buttons surrounding the LCD screen are actually illuminated by the LCD backlight, while buttons bellow the LCD are illuminated separately by their own individual LED lights.

Note – Unfortunately this button backlighting really tested the Godox engineers at the time, and actually held up the transmitters initial release for close to a year. So this is not quite as streamlined as Flashpoint would have liked, though they did the best they could to make this as practical as possible in the situation.

SINGLE PRESS – the LAMP Button illuminates the LCD and surrounding buttons.

DOUBLE PRESS – the LAMP Button locks the LCD and surrounding buttons illumination ON, and OFF again as required, also displaying an icon to indicate this.

LONG PRESS – the LAMP Button locks the lower button illumination ON, (stays on for 12 seconds after activity), and OFF again as required, displaying an icon to indicate this.

BUILT-IN BLUETOOTH & APP CONTROL

Another significant and great feature of the R2 PRO II Transmitter is Bluetooth capability now built-in.

This allows smart devices to provide remote control for the Flashpoint R2 / Godox X lighting system, no longer needing separate products like the Flashpoint M1 PRO / Godox A1 to relay the signal through.

The FlashPoint R2 APP is currently available for iOS, and GodoxPhoto APP for iOS and Android devices.

NOTE – BlueTooth initial password is “000000”

Unlike the R2 PRO II Transmitters basic “APP” mode, which basically disables the transmitter’s interface, the R2 PRO II’s Bluetooth mode conveniently displays the settings being sent from the smart device, while relaying them on to the receiver flashes.

MENU OPTIONS

The R2 PRO II again features a full graphic menu system, providing 16 Custom Function options at the time of release. A static image showing all functions can also be seen here.

NOTE – 0.1 or 0.3 stop Manual power level increment options, and a Channel Scan function have also bee added since the original static image and animation bellow were made.

Also note, one of the new options not discussed previously above, is the option to disable MULTI Mode from the main Mode button. This avoids the common pitfall of entering the MULTI screen accidentally when that mode is not required.

CHANNEL SCAN FUNCTION

Also added to the R2 PRO II Transmitter Menu from firmware version V1.5 onward is a Channel Scan Function, which allows you to scan for channels with the best radio reception in the current environment.

This can be a really important feature if you’re experiencing any issues with misfires or radio interference. Now you can and select a clean channel, which can dramatically improve radio reliability.

The B10X / B10X Plus build upon the original B10 / B10 Plus, now featuring a higher output LED light, increased from 2500 Lumens to 3250 Lumens.

As well as faster recycle times, reduced from 2 seconds down to 1.3 seconds at full power for the B10X, and 2.2 seconds for the B10X Plus.

Again the B10X / Plus feature a variable color LED light, and built-in Bluetooth connectivity, providing remote control via smart device and the new Profoto APP.

As well as an AC battery charger which can be charging while the light is in use.

The compact 250Ws B10X provides the light output of a number of speedlights combined, and allows up to 400 full power shots per battery charge. While the 500Ws B10X Plus offers 200 shots per charge.

The B10X’s 3250 Lumen LED light is color temperature adjustable, from 3000K to 6500K. Providing up to 75 minutes of full power run time per battery charge.

And Profoto are again marketing the B10X’s LED light as video light, not just a modelling light.

On the flash side, the B10X features TTL, HSS, and a 10 stop manual power range, from 1/1 to 1/512. Adjustable in 0.1 stop increments.

As well as a Freeze mode providing short flash durations down to 1/14,000s t.1 (1/42,000s t.5).

6 flash Groups are provided: A / B / C / D / E / F.

And TTL and HSS enabled Profoto Air Remote radio transmitter units are now available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, and Olympus, cameras systems.

Once again the B10X / Plus feature a recessed flash tube, providing a built-in reflector with protective glass cover.

The built in reflector making for easy use with optional Profoto OCF gels and grids.

OCF Zoom and Magnum reflectors are also available to concentrate the light and increase intensity by 1.2 and 1.8 stops respectively.

CHARGER / AC POWER ADAPTER

New to the OCF range of lights is the B10 and B10X / Plus’s ability to recharge while the light is in use, effectively providing an AC / DC power option for the light.

And the battery charger is designed to strap neatly to the light stand below the light.

The B10X / Plus’s battery will recharge fully in 90 minutes, or to 80% in 60 minutes (while not in use). And provides up to 400 full power flashes, or 75 minutes continuous LED light at full power.

PROFOTO APP

Another significant new feature and addition to the Profoto system is the new Profoto APP, and Bluetooth connectivity built directly into the B10 and B10X / Plus lights.

The APP provides full control of the Profoto Lights, including color temperature control with the B10’s new adjustable LED light.

Current flash power levels are also displayed live on the APP interface, and flash firmware updates can now be made through the APP and Blutetooth connection.

The APP also allows your smartphone to act as camera while using Profoto lights.

One unusual omission from the B10X / Plus is any from of Sync port (leave your backup manual radio triggers etc at home).

Though there is at least a basic optic slave unit included.

A Type-C USB port is included for firmware updates.

DUO KIT

The B10X and B10X Plus are available in Single or Duo kits.

With the Duo Kit including a nicely designed backpack (valued at $277 when purchased separately).

And the EVOLV 200 PRO Silicon Skin Bumpers are available now in a range of colors from Adorama for just $5.95.

Listening to customer feedback, the Flashpoint team have again worked with us to develop a skin that would provide a higher level of protection from impacts than their first skins developed for the original EVOVL/AD200.

The new protective bumper section is formed by a series of 6mm thick bands wrapping around the flash, which also extend approximately 10mm past the rear face of the flash.

And its this overhang which really provides a good level of cushioning from impacts to the rear edges and corners of the flash, without adding too much extra width and bulk to the overall size of the flash.

The overhang also protects the rear display panel, and provides a more practical and stable base for sitting the flash upright on its end if needed.

The protective band at the front end of the flash is also easily removable, allowing the flash to mount into the S-type Brackets when required.

Also if desired the rear bumper section of the skin can simply be cut off with a pair of scissors, so that it can then be attached and removed quickly and easily from the flash (also leaving the rest of the skin on the flash if desired).

This was mainly intended for people who may use the AD-B2 Twin Head Bracket at times, so that the larger rear bumper section could be easily removed allowing room for the flash to be mounted to the twin bracket.

The new Silicone Skin Bumpers are available in a range of colors, including the ever popular black.

NOTE – The Silicon Bumper Skins were designed to fit correctly and very neatly around the end shape of the EVOLV 200 PRO / Godox AD200 PRO, though they can be used reasonably well with the original EVOVL / AD200 flashes with some small adjustments. You mainly just need to cut a little extra away for the original power switch.

The X2T transmitters provide some significant upgrades over the original X1T version, bringing them more inline with the more recent Xpro transmitters. Including a the Channel Scan function which can provide significant improvements in reducing flash misfires, and the addition of built-in Bluetooth for smartphone APP control and triggering (which even the original Xpro do not provide).

Though Godox have strangely introduced some limitations in comparison to their Xpro transmitters as well. The most significant one being the omission of the popular TCM function, which allows you to change an initial TTL exposure to a Manual power setting.

Also one of the main advantages of having a transmitter with an upright LCD screen is for use on a tripod, when the camera is mounted up too high to view a display on top. The problem is now the Group buttons are positioned on the top where they can’t always be seen too easily. And they are the only way to access groups on the X2T transmitter, which is really not ideal.

The XT2 have also changed to left hand controls, more in line with the XPro transmitters, where the X1T had right hand controls. So for X1T owners this may take some getting used to, though moving towards consistency with the XPro transmitters is certainly a good thing.

Like the original X1T, the X2T provide an additional Pass Through Hotshoe on top. Though mounting a speedlight on top has generally proven an unreliable option, as well as good way to damage the transmitter case. And this is mostly unnecessary now that there are many Godox speedlights available with their own radio master function built-in.

The X2T’s hotshoe may still be useful though, for example for mounting and triggering additional manual radio transmitters, allowing other flash systems to be fired together with the Godox lights.

The 200 PRO provides an updated interface, with a slightly recessed display panel, which may help with being less prone to breakage than the original model.

INTERFACE

Although there is always room for improvement, the V1 Master interface now provides a much better user experience than previous models. Groups now have direct access with a button assigned to each Group.

And the Main Dial also includes a new D-Pad function, where you can press on the dial in 4 positions, as well as rotate it. This provides direct access to more functions, and faster adjustment of power levels. Pressing the top or bottom of the dial makes fast complete stop adjustments, while rotating allows for finer 0.3 or 0.1 stop increments.

HEAD TILT

The V1 flash head can now also tilt 30° backwards, which saves a lot of time compared to previously swiveling the head all the way around to achieve the same result.

Head swivel is a little more limited though at 330° (150° Left, 180° Right).

LED LIGHT

The V1’s Round Head now features a built-in 2W SMD LED modelling light. Providing 10 manually adjustable power levels, and 3300K color temperature.

MAGNETIC MODIFIER MOUNT

Possibly the most convenient new feature of the V1 flash is the magnetic accessory mount, compatible with the AK-R1 magnetic Gels and Modifiers.

These are also compatible with the AD100 Pro and AD200 Pro / EVOLV with optional H200R Round Head.

PORTS

The V1’s external ports include a 2.5mm Sync port, and USB-C port for firmware upgrades.

There is no longer a communication port for the older clip on XTR-16s radio receivers included.

BATTERY

The V1’s new Lithium-ion battery is 7.2V, 2600mAh, and 18Wh. The battery is now comprised of two standard 186500 cells. Which have proven to be very reliable in the larger strobes, and shouldn’t have issues with swelling etc like the previous V860 batteries sometime had.

The supplied battery charger is also now a very compact USB-C charger, which can fully recharge the battery in 3.5 hours. (For people wanting to use a mains power outlet, generic USB to mains power adapters are widely available).
