Mobspecs wrote some interesting findings. An analysis made by A. Hill M: Metrics, a company that operates internationally that detects the consumption of content and mobile services in the United States and Western Europe, held to Develop Conference 2008, we learn interesting data.

The most important are those relating to the terminals more prevalent in Europe and technologies implemented in them. The 76.4% of terminals, in fact, are compatible with the Java platform MIDP 2.0 against 27% of those compatible with FlashLite. Most terminals compatible with these two technologies, says Hill, are mostly Nokia and Sony-Ericsson. (more…)

For example, all Symbian UIQ 3.3 devices have Opera 9.5 pre-installed and hence support this application runtime. Also Opera 9.5 apparently supports Flash Lite 3.0. This opens up another way to distribute Flash Lite and web browser based mobile applications, similar to Nokia WRT.

The SDK includes documentation, a desktop PC emulator, a debugger and a DOM inspector.

Sony Ericsson they have announced/mentioned the first mobile phone which supports the Project Capuchin API. It’s the SE C905 phone with Flash Lite 2.0, FM tuner and a 8.1 megapixel camera.

What is Project Capuchin?
Sony Ericsson’s Project Capuchin technology is a Java ME API and associated tools that define a bridge between the Java ME and Adobe Flash Lite programming environments.
This API and soon-to-be-available tools makes it possible to use Flash as the presentation layer and Java as the application logic, meaning that Flash tools can be used for UI design while still having access to all the phone services available to Java ME.
The tool packages the Flash content together with the Java application logic into a Java Archive, JAR file, hence allowing the resulting application and package to be treated and managed as a Java application re-using all of the existing Java infrastructure available on the phone and provisioning backend.

A nice tutorial will teach you how to create a Flash Lite game playable on the Flash Lite Player version 1.1 - one of the earliest versions and most restricted, but the most widely spread version as well. The basic game could be created without using the advanced features provided in later versions. Adopting Flash Lite 1.1 will guarantee that the game will be compatible with the largest possible number of Flash Lite powered devices.

Making rich media for mobile consumption has never been easier since the release of the Flash Lite player for mobile devices. You can make a vector graphics game that could be played on any device regardless of its operating system or screen resolution easily as long as that device is equipped with the Flash Lite player - and lets not forget that you can play that game on a PC as well without using any emulators because the file is still a Flash movie that could be played on the Flash Player.

As with the release of a mobile guide for Rock Werchter there is more interesting features incorporated. Finally a beta working version on multi mobile platform previously only reach out to flash lite enabled phones from Nokia, Sony Ericson, … now they have ported their app to the iPhone.

For the first time (unless we missed something) flash lite content is ported to the iphone. Of course with all of the iphone UI advantages implemented! “How exactly did they managed this!” I hear you guys shout out loud. A while ago I was contacted by Emanuele Cipolloni from barefootsoft.com telling me about an awesome project they were working on: b.Tween. This is a framework using barefootsoft’s EyeGT technology to compile mobile content and deliver it across other devices. They were finishing the framework and wanted to test it out on Flash Lite content which I’d gladly delivered as you probably could imagine!

You can find more information about EyeGT at www.barefootsoft.com. Even though the b.Tween framework is still in a beta version and it is not 100% perfectly optimized, the result is stunning! Check out the youtube video:

Those of you with sharp eyes may have noticed that two of the 4 products announced by Nokia yesterday have the latest version of S40, 6th Edition. While S40 is not a smart phone operating system due to the lack of a native programming model and the lack of multitasking, it is still impressive and many many many more people use S40 rather than S60. Here is a change log from the S40 Forum Nokia homepage:

Series 40 6th Edition represents a continuing commitment by Nokia to mobile application developers, with support for MIDP 2.1 and the subset of the Mobile Service Architecture (JSR?248). JSR?248 provides a common implementation of seven popular JSRs. These implementations are shared with S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, and it is expected that other manufacturers of Java™ phones will implement JSR?248. This means that developers will be able to create applications for Nokia platforms that will also run on other manufacturers’ devices, with little or no change.

In addition, Series 40 6th Edition delivers exciting new opportunities for the creation of location-based applications, with the introduction of the Location API for J2ME™ (JSR?179). This API can utilize an external Bluetooth GPS unit to obtain location information.
