The room, which is on the first floor, provides an intimate and attractive environment. We can provide you with a sit down meal, Champagne Afternoon Tea or drinks and canapés, also can be used for a private meeting room. In the summer months you can spill out into the courtyard garden for extra seating, or pre lunch drinks, weather permitting.

February's Featured Customer at Fletchers - Martin Bradshaw, local Artist

Martin begin his working life as a professional cellist having studied at Trinity College of Music, London; joining the BBC Concert Orchestra in 1980. During this period he developed an interest in painting, particularly with watercolour. Then left the BBC in 1991 to study at Camden School of Art and subsequently Chelsea College of Art and Design. Since then he has divided time between painting and working as a free-lance cellist.

In 2006, Martin moved to Rye in order to concentrate on painting, gathering material for his work locally.

Architectural subjects are a source of inspiration for my work; Martin's watercolours reflect a particular fascination with the resonant effects created by light and space in an architectural context - the bold, vivid use of colour complementing and liberating the restricting lines of a structure, producing a strong sense of drama and atmosphere.

Martin is more than happy to take commissions for paintings and illustrations. If you would like to discuss having a unique watercolour painted for you please email him.mt.bradshaw@virgin.net

Also great news Martin is currently taking ownership of Martello's Book Shop, in Rye High Street, which is due to happen fingers crossed on 1st July. There is a website being put together currently, which will give up-to-date news of events, books & book related products. i will keep you posted !

As promised my first blog on our customers that come into Fletchers

Frederick Lees

Frederick Lees was born in 1924 in Cheshire. He served in RAF Bomber Command during the war and afterwards studied at Liverpool and London Universities. After joining the British Overseas Civil Service he was posted to Malaya where much of his work related to the countering of the Communist Insurgency. Subsequently he entered the British Diplomatic Service which took him back to South East Asia at the time of Indonesian semi-belligerent confrontation against the newly formed Federation of Malaysia. In the 1970's he became involved in the work of British and European non-governmental agencies active in Third World development; this, for a while, brought him to the Sudan in the aftermath of the first civil war and to Ethiopia in the period just before the anti-monarchical revolution. Later he returned to diplomatic work to train the foreign service of Papua New Guinea. The last part of his overseas career was spent in the Asian Development Bank in Manila during the years of the People Power revolution against the Marcos regime.

Lees penned "The Arthuriad of Catumandus," highly praised by Anne Ross, D.J. Taylor, Gore Vidal and many others. His interest in Arthurian studies began in his university days and so the Arthuriad represents many years of research into the early Dark Age period. The book is enhanced by his personal experience of social ferment, political rivalries and ambitious leaders in situations ranging from the sophisticated modern states of South East Asia through the court life of Malay sultanates to the religious conflicts of the Sudan and the tribal wars of Papua New Guinea. His deep understanding of human motivation has enabled him, on the foundation of Catumandus’ memoirs, to transmute 5th and 6th centuries AD Britain from an age of legend into a real world that is both harsh and beautiful.

Lees' depth of knowledge and command of the English language, which at times soars to the poetic, is amply illustrated in these selected cartoons and demonstrated in his literary works - the "Annals of the Purple City," a novel of east west human relationships rich in erotic and mystical elements, inspired by a sojourn in the early nineteen fifties in Macao where he studied Chinese. Those elements are also present in "The Arthuriad." A trilogy of novels, "The Malayan Life of Ferdach O’Haney," encapsulates much of Lees’ Malayan experience. His most recent novel. "The Rape of Rye," describes contemporary social life in the historic Sussex town of Rye where Lees and his wife, Marie, now live.

Lees' latest novel, 'The First Lady', based on his many years of living in the Philippines, will be published early this year.

So its that time of year again & i feel i should write a few words to you all, if you follow our blog.

A huge Thank you to all our loyal customers old & new that have been visiting us this year, you are all testament to us being here in our Fifth Year !!! & coming in time & time again to see us.Which has been a great year !!!

which is close to our hearts here at Fletcher's as sadly we lost lost a dear Customer during the year & a close Family member both to cancer.

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (charity 269535)

A local Charity needed support to aid to keep this beautiful place clean for us all to enjoy

Pete has been very extremely busy organising some fantastic Prizes which have been donated by, nine local artist, local authors,our suppliers, local Restaurants, a land rover safari of Rye Nature Reserve and many other Rye Business, many many other great prizes.

Friends of Fletcher in Rye NEWSLETTER No. 5 Summer 2011

Dear Friends of Fletcher,

Those of you who live in Rye will by now know the state of play regarding Lion Street – but, for those of you who live further afield, the CIC/St Mary’s PCC partnership has won the approval of the SCCH Board to acquire the Lion Street site, in its entirety, for Rye. It is a stunning victory for Rye and one worth trumpeting from the famous St Mary’s Tower!! Lawyers are busy hammering out the minor details of the deal and we are hopeful to have the keys by June ……

The CIC Board is now actively engaged on two fronts to move the project into the next phase: obtaining detailed planning consent (hopefully, by October) and fund-raising so as to be able to commence building work at the earliest possible moment. The architects, Jonathan Dunn Associates, are in deep discussions with both English Heritage and the RDC planners to iron out any glitches with the proposed design. They have produced a 3-D model and, all being well, we are hoping to be able to open a Project Office within the old Library Building, once we own it, where the model will be displayed.

As for the fund-raising - all £1.3m of it – the CIC Board is engaged on a massive letter-writing exercise across the private and public sectors. On the basis of ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ the funds WILL be secured …..

MEMBER’S EVENTS

Hugh Kermode, our Artistic Director, has agreed with David Brown (Director) & James Shepherd (Designer) to bring the London production of
The Wild-Goose Chase - a hugely popular 1621 Fletcher play on the age-old ‘battle of the sexes’ – to the Community Centre in Rye, for an evening performance on Saturday July 9th
Details of ticket prices, etc. are still been worked out but do please keep this date in your diaries free.
As reported in the last Newsletter, the play is currently enjoying a run at the White Bear Theatre in London to very good reviews – but, staging it here in Rye will be hugely symbolic: the 1st professional performance of a John Fletcher play in Rye ever (well, as far as we know!)

Hugh is also still negotiating with Simon Callow to give a reading of his favourite poetry & prose …. and now this too is most probably going to be staged at Lion Street; details will follow when known.

For those of you who came to see The Mad Lover evening in April 2010, you may remember the Notes in Newsletter 1 that linked the play with both ‘Double Falsehood’, a play by Lewis Theobald (a little known 19th century playwright) and ‘Cardenio’, a play co-written by Shakespeare and Fletcher which was last performed in 1613 at the Drury Lane Theatre. ‘Cardenio’ is currently being performed by the RSC at the Swan Theatre in Stratford until October 6th. Details of times/ticket availability can be seen on the RSC website.
But, remember, we got there first!!
