Automated Deburring – Tips and Techniques

Parts manufacturers are using automated deburring technologies to reduce labor costs and speed high-volume parts finishing. Instead of removing burrs offline during secondary operations, companies are using CNC equipment and nylon abrasive disc brushing tools. For example, as Modern Machine Shop magazine has reported, Orange Vise Co. automates deburring with a high-speed horizontal machining center from DMG Mori Seiki Co. and NamPower nylon abrasive disc brushes from Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM).

NamPower technology removes burrs and improves surface finish at the same time. For Orange Vise, a manufacturer of CNC machine vises and quick-change fixturing components, imparting a specific surface finish is also important. Although the precision parts manufacturer began using NamPower abrasive disc brushes for deburring, company founder Eric Sun discovered that these outer diameter deburring tools “provided a really nice surface finish”.

Deburring Case Study

As Sun told Modern Machine Shop, Orange Vise selected dot-style NamPower abrasive discs, a BRM nylon abrasive brushing tool for general-purpose deburring and surface finishing. Made with flexible abrasive nylon filaments bonded to a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic base, NamPower disc brushes feature a unique combination of both ceramic and silicon carbide abrasive. Their light-weight, flow-through tool holders also integrate easily with CNC machinery and other production equipment.

To remove burrs and achieve the desired surface finish at the same time, Sun told Modern Machine Shop that Orange Vise reduced the spindle speed of its Mori Seiki NHX4000. The NamPower Resource Guide, a downloadable technical book from BRM, offers suggested disc speeds for optimum operating RPMs. This free guide also provides suggested feed rates and brush depths for dot-style and turbine-style NamPower nylon abrasive disc brushes.

Disc Speeds, Feed Rates, and Brush Depths

As the NamPower Resource Guide explains, many factors determine optimum disc speed. In addition to brush diameter, trim length, and filament diameter, specifications such as fill pattern and cut depth play a role. For each disc diameter and grit size, the NamPower Resource Guide lists the recommended speed. As a rule, disc speeds should remain under 2,500 SFPM in dry applications and 3,500 in wet applications. Excessive speed can cause brush filaments to flair and bounce off the workpiece.

Feed rate is a function of factors such as burr size, workpiece material, surface contours, and finish requirements. Starting feed rates between 30 IPM and 80 IPM are recommended, but the final feed rate is application-specific. Cut depth varies with finer or coarser-grit abrasive filaments, and dot-style brushes provide deeper penetration than turbine-style brush tools. Typically, spindle speed is decreased with increased depth of interference so that nylon abrasive filaments can conform to part contours.

Right for Smoothbores, Wrong for Rifled Bores

Recently, a gun owner messaged BRM on Facebook and reported that he couldn’t find a Flex-Hone® for Firearms tool for the .40 S&W barrel on his Smith & Wesson M&P®40 Shield. This pistol is neither rare nor unusual. In fact, the M&P Shield is pretty popular because of its slim, concealable, and lightweight design. Built with a high-strength polymer frame and coated stainless steel slide and barrel, the Shield has an unloaded weight of just 19 ounces. Yet the gun owner’s problem weighed heavily on his mind.

Blued Surfaces and Rifled Barrels

While maintaining his firearm, the shooter explained, he’d applied bluing remover that leaked through the plugs and partially removed the finish from the bore. As many gunsmiths know, bluing is a chemical treatment that’s used to protect gun metal from rust. Good bluing removers won’t damage the base material, but they do affect surface finish. The gun owner who contacted us had looked for a Flex-Hone® for Firearms tool on the BRM website, but still couldn’t find a surface finishing solution.

That’s when BRM’s Technical Support team answered the gunsmith’s Facebook message and shared some important facts. Flex-Hone® for Firearms tools are designed for smooth bore applications such as shotgun barrels, revolver cylinders, and pistol and rifle chambers. They should not be used with rifled barrels like the .40 S&W on the gun owner’s Smith & Wesson Shield. As BRM explained, flexible honing would take the “edge” off the barrel’s rifling, which “bites” into the bullet and imparts the proper spin.

Cleaner, Smoother Surfaces

Flex-Hone® tools for Revolvers and Pistols are wrong for rifled bores, but they’re right for smoothbores. Although many modern handguns have rifled barrels, sidearms still have smooth (non-rifled) surfaces. That’s why BRM supplies flexible hones for handgun cylinders and semi-automatic slides. Cross-hole deburring removes the burrs that are created when manufacturers and machinists cross-drill intersecting holes on metal parts. Removing these ragged edges, raised areas, particles, protrusions, and shavings improves part function and quality. Because metal burrs can cause part misalignments, cross-hole deburrring supports the smooth operation of machinery and mechanical systems. Burr removal also promotes plant safety and production efficiency. Operators who handle machined parts or blanks with burrs risk injury, and poor surface finish quality on machine components can impede production. What’s the best way to remove burrs from cross-drilled holes then? First, you’ll need to select the right tool for the job. Next, you’ll need to follow suggested operating parameters and best practices.

Choose the Right Cross-Hole Deburring Tool for the Job

The Flex-Hone® tool from Brush Research Manufacturing (BRM) is a flexible, resilient honing tool that removes burrs from cross-drilled holes and improves surface finish at the same time. Follow Best Practices for Deburring Cross-Drilled Holes

Flexible hones have a wire stem for use with most any rotating spindle. With CNC equipment, the tool is secured with a Jacobs-style collet that’s clamped directly to the stem wire. BRM’s cross-hole deburring tools are used also in lathes, mills, drill presses, and electric hand drills. As this YouTube video shows, an operator can easily chuck a Flex-Hone® into a standard 3/8” or 1/2” drill motor on cordless drill. As the Flex-Hone® Resource Guide explains, power requirements are a function of horsepower. Stroke rate is a function of flexible hone diameter, stroke, and cross-hatch angle specification (if any).

When deburring cross-drilled holes with the Flex-Hone®, BRM recommends that you first stroke and rotate the tool in a clockwise direction. Then remove the cylinder hone from the bore, reverse the spindle, and stroke and rotate in a clockwise direction. This promotes a more symmetrical deburring pattern and prevents the burr from folding back into the cross-hole. During cross-hole deburring, and with any Flex-Hone® operation (such as cylinder wall deglazing), always use a lubricant or good-quality honing oil. This prevents tool loading, and ensures the exposure of fresh cutting particles.

Wheel brushes are wheel-shaped brushing tools that remove burrs and improve the surface finish of machined parts. These power brushes are also used for outer diameter (OD) applications such as cleaning, polishing, and edge radiusing. Surface Finishing Applications

Product Specifications

BRM’s diamond-filament NamPower wheel brushes are supplied in three diameters: 100 mm (4 inches), 150 mm (6 inches), and 200 mm (8 inches). The 150 mm and 200 mm diameter cutting tools have face widths of either 10 mm or 15 mm. The 100 mm diamond wheel is available with either a 5 mm or 10 mm face width to accommodate a variety of flue relief sizes. All of these diamond abrasive brush tools come standard in 600 mesh, which provides just the right amount of cutting action.

Manufacturers and machinists should also consider the relationship between brush diameter and arbor hole size. NamPower composite hub diamond wheels with a diameter of 100 mm have a 20 mm arbor hole. NamPower diamond abrasive wheel brushes with diameters of 150 mm or 200 mm have a 3.25” arbor hole. BRM produces machined arbor adapters in a variety of sizes. These adapters are designed to offer increased brush support, less brush vibration, and longer brush life.
