STUTTGART, GERMANY—October 1, 2012—Effective the 1st of January 2013, Flint Group will raise prices for photopolymer printing plates by three percent to recover general cost increases.

Energy costs have risen by more than 20 percent since 2007; additionally, major increases are expected due to the move to renewable energies. Transportation and logistic costs have constantly gone up during recent years, and future increases are already becoming evident.

As a result of the economical crisis at the end of 2008, raw material prices escalated and still remain at a continuing high level; a recovery cannot be seen. Furthermore, photopolymer printing plates are manufactured with several special raw materials, which are exclusively produced for these products. “We place high demands on quality and the specification of our raw materials,” explains Dr. Thomas Zwez, vice president operations Flint Group Flexographic Products. “It is obvious that our suppliers will charge us for this service. Due to this special situation, we have to work constantly to secure our raw material base. This means significant additional efforts, which tie up considerable resources.” Flint Group will work continuously on improving internal processes and offering sustainable and innovative products to its customers.

Eastman Kodak Co. replaced its chief financial officer and moved to cut another 1,000 jobs in an effort to slow its consumption of cash and better position the company to emerge from bankruptcy court.

The moves follow a sharp increase in cash use in July and a stumbling patent auction that looks unlikely to raise as much money as the company had hoped. Those developments threaten to make it harder for Kodak to emerge from Chapter 11 in its new incarnation as a printer maker, forcing the company to consider new asset sales to raise funds.

Cash held by Kodak's U.S. operations fell by $72 million in July, the most recent figure available, compared with cash burn of $64 million in June and $43 million in May. Creditors responded by putting more pressure on the company to cut costs, according to creditors familiar with the matter. Many called for management changes, specifically for Chief Executive Antonio Perez and Chief Financial Officer Antoinette P. McCorvey to resign, the creditors said.

On Monday, Kodak said Ms. McCorvey would be leaving the company. Rebecca Roof of AlixPartners LLC, a restructuring advisory firm hired by Kodak, was named interim CFO.
A spokesman for Kodak declined to comment on calls for Mr. Perez to step down.
Under the reorganization laid out Monday, Kodak will remove some layers of its executive ranks. Co-President Philip J. Faraci will leave the company and won't be replaced. Mr. Faraci worked with Mr. Perez at Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +0.82% prior to joining Kodak and was largely viewed as the CEO's right-hand man.

Laura Quatela, Kodak's other president, will lead the personalized imaging unit. Dolores Kruchten, who was general manager for business solutions and services, will head the company's document imaging business. Both are expected to leave the company after those businesses are sold in the first half of 2013.

The latest round of layoffs adds to the 2,700 jobs cut so far this year, leaving about 13,400 workers at a company that once employed 145,000. Kodak said it expects to save about $330 million a year from the head-count reductions, including costs for compensation and benefits.
The company said it is considering further layoffs.

The savings are needed in part, because Kodak's efforts to raise cash by selling off some 1,100 digital patents aren't on track to be as lucrative as hoped. Initial bids came in well below the $2.6 billion Kodak once said the patents could be worth, and the company, which had set a goal to finish the auction in early August, now says it will pick a winner Sept. 19.

Last month, Kodak announced that it was putting a number of its businesses up for sale, including film, document imaging and scanning. Kodak grouped the businesses up for sale under "personalized imaging," which generates about $1.3 billion a year in revenue, and "document imaging," which brings in around $466 million a year.

Kodak's other unit after the reorganization will house the commercial businesses such as digital printing, graphics and services that the company intends to focus on after Chapter 11.

The company is shedding the film and camera businesses on which it build its name in favor of consumer inkjet printer and commercial printers, on which CEO Mr. Perez has long pinned the company's hopes for a turnaround.

Flexo Plate Digital: All About FPDigital

It wasn't too long ago when we sought after the next big thing in flexo and we installed the most technologically advanced CTP available - Kodak Flexcel NX Wide. But now we are reviewing yet another CTP for the future. A workhorse that might replace and/or backup our beloved Thermoflex Wide. For those who don't know about Kodak Thermoflex it was the best CTP for flexo for many reasons but it was discontinued by Kodak in year 2011.

On July 28, 2012 Rieckermann Indonesia introduced us to a Swiss made CTP called Luscher XPose. The Sales Director from Luscher was making his rounds for the first time in Indonesia and Flexo Plate Digital was one of his many stops. According to Luscher, they specialize in high quality all-in-one CTP for for offset, flexo and letterpress and he was confident that it was better solution than Kodak and Esko.

In the past we tried contacting Luscher but didn't receive any reply, pretty much ignored but as Indonesia is becoming the next world's factory we seem to receive more attention from all suppliers. As soon as we finish our review we'll post it on our blog and share with everyone our findings.

We have successfully completed a new paper cup design for PEPSI for UEFA European Football Championship 2012. It will be distributed to its biggest customer and partner in Indonesia - KFC Indonesia.

PEPSI's requirements were high quality print and food grade packaging and we were able to achieve these two goals by working closely with our partners using flexo presses with water-base inks. The faces of Europe's finest, including Messi was sharp and clear similar to offset but with higher density.

We'll post the production cup once it's available in the market place.

New Dry Film for Flexo

In cooperation with Swiss company Folex, a manufacturer of films and paper used in current imaging technologies, Flint Group Flexographic Products has developed a laser ablative dry film.

The laser ablative dry film, LADF, is designed for imaging on infrared laser systems, such as digital flexo or letterpress image setters. The imaged film can be used for the UV exposure of analogue flexographic, letterpress and offset plates, as well as for screen printing stencils and for image control.
The new LAD film is claimed to offer numerous advantages to the user. Due to the very high resolution (>10.000 dpi, depending on the laser system) as well as the high contrast and the reproduction of even the finest details, it is suitable for almost all applications.

The matte film surface enables the exposure of small size pad printing plates up to large size flexo printing plates. The thickness of 175 microns ensures good handling properties and a high dimensional stability. The LADF film minimizes the process tolerances and allows a reliable and repeatable quality in film processing. In addition, the film exhibits ‘outstanding’ scratch resistance, says the company.

This will now compete with Kodak's DITR Film / 4401 / 6.5 mil / Matte - slightly thinner film with thickness of 165 microns.

Kodak DITR

Kodak DITR 4401 Film was also designed to be imaged on standard flexo CTP imager in just a few simple steps. This innovative film eliminates processing entirely, saving time and minimizing the opportunity for process variations that can necessitate startovers. In addition, KODAK DITR 4401 Film can be handled in yellow or UV-modified fluorescent lighting for easier cutting and manipulation. And you no longer need to maintain a separate darkroom.

We have tested Kodak DITR 4401 Fim for analog flexography but its price was too high in comparison to "processed/imaged" films from CTF shops using traditional digital films from China. In light of the new LADF by Flint we hope Kodak's DITR will implement a new pricing strategy so more people can use its products.

Flexo Plate Digital hopes to try Flint's LADF in the near future, and we'll definitely share our findings with out industry friends and partners.

In order to mark the launch of Southeast Asia’s first Flat-Top-Dot technology, Flexo Plate Digital hosted its first ever Open House in April 17, 2012 – and the day was a massive success. As part of the event, with the generous support of flexographic partners across the industry, Flexo Plate Digital was able to share the latest trends in packaging, specifically within flexographic technologies for the printing industry.

Over 50 attendees and more than 18 exhibitor representatives from Kodak, DuPont, Siegwerk, and Gallus spent a lively six hours together exploring how to improve packaging industry with flexo printing technology. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to speak directly with suppliers about each of the products and learn about the latest technologies available for the brand owners and packaging converters. Flexo Plate Digital also provided opportunity to get hands-on training with some of the machinery as well as live demonstration on Kodak Flexcel NX Wide to show off the new and breakthrough technology in flexo printing.

Kodak had a pre-Drupa 2012 event at Hotel Santika Premiere Jakarta on March 5th, 2012.

Kodak invited around 200 distributors and customers to show what they are preparing for Drupa and some latest update from experts on:

- Commercial
- Newspaper/Publishing
- Packaging
- Unified Workflow Solutions.

I personally wanted to hear more about Kodak's Direct Engraving Laser CTP for flexo and Prinergy 6 but the event was very general in nature and it turned to be more or less a PR event for Kodak to reassure its position in the market place.
