Policy: Flickr changes way of dealing with Notices of Infringement

Flickr introduced today a new method for acting on a Notice of Infringement (NOI). The new system allows the reversible suppression of the allegedly infringing content, and enables its restoration if required.

Formerly, upon receipt of a completed NOI, Flickr would delete the image in question, without the ability to restore it later. This repeatedly led to contention, e.g. in the recent Jokerized Obama case. Under the new system, the image in question will be replaced with a static graphic that indicates its unavailability due to alleged copyright infringement. Flickr will keep a copy of the image in question, and will restore it as appropriate.

Press: Getty Images launches Flickr Collection

According to the Getty Images blog, the Flickr collection has officially been launched. According to a Getty staff member posting in the private "Getty Contributor's" group, Flickr will launch their side of it tomorrow morning.

API: New Method, enables obtaining lists of group members

A new, experimental API method has just been announced, which enables the development of code that can obtain group member lists.

The new method, flickr.com/services/api/flickr.groups.members.getList.html, requires authentication for a specific flickr member, and retrieves the list of group members as would be seen by that member via the web interface. It also gives information about the member types/roles (administrator, moderator, member).

Announced by Kellan on the API mailing list. Discussion is also welcome in the API group.

Site: Change affecting third party tools

Flickr introduced today a silent change that doesn't affect the way Flickr pages look, but causes various third party tools/extensions to fail.

Users of some Flickr extensions will need to install updated versions of these tools to continue using them. For the popular Flickr Buddy Icon Reply, updates have been posted by its developer, doc18, and by a fellow user (Eric M Martin).

Reports and discussion of other third party extensions are welcome in the Flickr Hacks group.

Failure: Blank pages [February 4th, 2009]

Random blank pages are occurring on Flickr. Various Flickr pages randomly fail to load, immediately giving a blank page. This affects the RSS feeds and the API applications as well.

Reloading the page usually works, but may give strange results when performing any posting actions. Flickr staff are working on a fix.

Flickr Tools: New Flickr Uploadr (version 3.1.3)

Flickr has just released a new version of its stand-alone photo and video upload software, the Uploadr.

The new version of the Uploadr offers incremental changes from version 3.1.1. It is available in eight languages, for Mac and Windows (these are links to the English versions).

Feedback and bug reports can be posted in the Forum thread.

Community: Inauguration 2009 (official group)

Flickr HQ has big plans for the Presidential Inauguration on Tuesday. They've created an official group: Inauguration 2009 and planned a flickr meetup in DC on the day of.

Flickr users can now set their Real Name and their Current City to be visible by contacts only, or further restrict this information to friends & family. To change these settings, use the profile privacy form.

While personal details like email address and instant messaging names could be disclosed to all or restricted to contacts or friends/family, the Real Name and Current City fields used to be disclosed to either everyone, minimally restricted to flickr members, or fully private by leaving them blank. Flickr has now enabled two additional, previously hidden privacy options via its user interface: show to contacts only, or show to friends/family.

The Indicommons blog represents outreach from the Flickr Commons group beyond Flickr, to broaden knowledge of The Commons among the public and civic institutions around the world and to increase participation by the public in the Commons.

The Flickr group Flickr Commons was born out of one fan's desire to show her support for The Commons. Anna Graf's creation of this group also answered new needs, ones that hadn’t been spoken: it created a home for all those people commenting, tagging, researching, and simply enjoying themselves — somewhere to bring them all together to share their passion for The Commons. They turned up — not only regular Flickr members like us but also Commons institution staff and Flickr staff — full of ideas and enthusiasm and passion to do amazing things, and committed to actually doing them.

Indicommons ("in de commons") arose quickly out of this new group. We wanted to let not just Flickr members but everyone know how exciting The Commons is. Community: New Public Group, "Flickr Commons"

Flickr Commons a new member created group for appreciating, enriching, supporting, publicly curating, evangelizing, and furthering The Commons: a collaboration between flickr and photographic heritage institutions around the world.

In their own words... Flickr Commons is "a place for the commons community to share and discuss the truly awesome collections being made available in The Commons". If this Flickr-News effort has any concept of a "Group's We've Noticed", Flickr Commons has certainly rocketed to the top of that list. Created by concerned flickr members shortly after the the discovery of layoffs that impacted this project. Already the level of participation by both members, flickr-staff, and staff from the institutions is very high, with glimpses of great things to come. The group's goals have been summarized into three areas where the public (flickr members) can contribute: Curation & Content, Evangelism, and Design & Development. It's been such a whirlwind that already there has been one flickr blog post created directly from a member curated theme, and a new Flickr API parameter, is_commons, added to the method flickr.photos.search to accommodate the communities call for a "commons only" API search mechanism.
