Documentation in 1727 gives evidence of residency by Tomas Gonzales y Hernandez, a Canary Islander who, with his wife, Francisca de Guevarra, lived in the house until British occupation of Saint Augustine. After the structure had been vacant for 10 years, Major Joseph Peavett bought the property from Jesse Fish, adding portions of the upper story and making other improvements. The British officer died in 1786, and Spanish authorities sold the property in public sale to Geronimo Alvarez. The ships berthed at the Oceanic Steamship Company wharf and Burns Philp and Company Wharf in West Circular Quay. The Sydney Morning Herald (&lt;a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16719764"&gt;nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16719764&lt;/a&gt;) reported the 'unfamiliar spectacle' of the Dutch Navy and further research has also highlighted that HNLMS EVERSTEN was included in the squadron. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. The squadron consisted of the IWATE, ASAMA and YAKUMO. Nearly 2,500 men of which 300 were midshipmen spent time in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth during their tour. A contingent from the squadron are shown here at the Millions Club on Rowe St in Sydney. Admiral Saito and some of his fellow naval officers were invited by the Australian-Japanese Society to attend a luncheon.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The Millions Club was established by local businessmen in the belief that accelerated British migration would make Sydney the first Australian city to reach a population of one million. The Founding President Sir Arthur Rickard, a local real estate developer was a strong advocate of British migration, yet was also President of the Japan-Australia Society. Whilst he considered the Japanese to be unsuitable immigrants, he admired their social welfare system and ambition of the nation.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. Between 1974 and 1984 Hubbard amassed a record of 83-48-3 including two Black College National Championships (1976 and 1978) and an undefeated season in 1977. Angry over the American government's Indian removal policy, a group of 180 Seminole warriors attacked Major Francis Dade and 103 soldiers marching from Fort Brooke (Tampa) to Fort King (Ocala). Only three of the Americans survived. The event was for years known as Dade's Massacre. Starting in 1905, with Congressman &lt;a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://floridamemory.com/items/show/24676"&gt;Stephen Sparkman&lt;/a&gt;, attempts were made to preserve the site. Finally, on 29 September 1921, at the urging of US Senator &lt;a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://floridamemory.com/items/show/144576"&gt;Duncan Fletcher&lt;/a&gt;, the Florida State Legislature purchased the site as a historic memorial. The 80-acre property was later transferred to the Florida Park Service as a state park. In 1972, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Dade Battlefield Historic Memorial.
