May 24, 2012 - Thousands of young people will take to the sky on Saturday, June 9, as EAA volunteers continue an outstanding aviation tradition - International Young Eagles Day.

The annual event brings together kids and pilots as part of the EAA Young Eagles program, the largest youth aviation education program ever created. Young Eagles was founded in 1992 and has provided nearly 1.7 million free demonstration flights to young people around the world through the efforts of 45,000 volunteer pilots and 50,000 ground volunteers. The program is a focal point within EAA's mission of growing participation in aviation.

Each year since 1994, approximately 8,000 young people are flown on or around International Young Eagles Day. The flights are provided by volunteer EAA-member pilots in aircraft ranging from the newest airplanes to vintage biplanes. Such interesting aircraft as gliders, helicopters, and even hot air balloons and blimps have also been used for Young Eagles flights.

Nearly 150 events are planned by local EAA chapters during this weekend, not counting the many individual EAA members who will fly Young Eagles independently.

"Thanks to the work of the volunteer EAA-member pilots and ground volunteers, the Young Eagles program has proven to be extremely successful in attracting young people to aviation and helping them on the pathway toward becoming an aviator," said Rod Hightower, EAA president/CEO. "While Young Eagles flights take place nearly every day of the year, International Young Eagles Day is a chance to focus on the program and share the freedom to fly with a new generation. Join us at an event near you as we inspire the next generation of aviators."

Since 1992, the EAA Young Eagles program has flown nearly 1.7 million young people free of charge. Recent research shows that these young people are five times more likely to become pilots than non-Young Eagles. They also already comprise more than 7 percent of the nation's pilot population under age 35, as nearly 20,000 pilots are former Young Eagles participants.

During International Young Eagles Day, pilots will fly young people on individual flights or as part of Young Eagles flight rallies, which often bring together hundreds of youngsters and dozens of aircraft in many communities.

A Young Eagles flight is the first step in EAA's Flight Plan, which helps young people move from an initial flight toward the full potential of aviation. Among the menu of Flight Plan activities available is a free EAA student membership, free access to Sporty's Online Pilot Training Course, a free flight lesson, and reimbursement for the costs of a successful FAA written test in addition to more than $300,000 in scholarships and awards available to young people each year. Visit the Young Eagles website for more information.

..... Optimism is either not expressed or is done so with caution. In this environment, two manufacturers have launched three new models.

Cessna Longitude

Cessna’s super mid-size Citation Longitude jet is aimed at the upper end of the market that seems to be doing better than smaller jets—the $25-million-and-up business jet. The company announced the $25.999 million jet, the first new model since last year’s Citation Latitude and the M2, as Cessna’s longest-range jet. It features a six-foot, flat-floor cabin.

The Longitude will fly 4,000 nautical miles at a maximum cruise speed of 490 knots true airspeed, and features Garmin G5000 avionics. It is forecast to enter service in 2017 and will carry a crew of two (with an option for a third crew seat) and up to eight passengers. Two Snecma Silvercrest 11,000-pound-thrust engines power it.

Bombardier Aerospace introduced the $11.5-million Learjet 70 and $13-million Learjet 75 that both have ranges greater than 2,000 nm and cruise speeds up to Mach 0.75. The two will enter service as early as the first half of 2013 and will be powered by Honeywell engines. Both feature Garmin G5000 avionics.

Bombardier officials told reporters at this week’s European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva that while smaller jets have suffered industry-wide, Bombardier has done better than most.

The Learjet 70 can carry six passengers plus two crew members, while the Learjet 75 can carry eight passengers but with a reduced range of 1,950 nm.

Great Barrington Airport is personal, friendly and homey! That’s how folks describe it. “It’s like going back to earlier days of general aviation”. “It’s like coming home.” Is it no wonder? When you first arrive you will more than likely be greeted by the owners -- people who have dedicated their lives to safe general aviation at GBR and the premise that flying and flight training are meant to be enjoyable.

In the early 1920s a farmer’s potato field was converted into a commercial aerodrome to service the booming city of Great Barrington, MA. This humble aerodrome eventually grew into the modern facility that is today the Great Barrington Airport with a 2585 foot paved runway and two instrument approaches.

Berkshire Aviation Enterprises has operated the airport since 1944, providing sales, service, flight instruction, charter operations and sightseeing tours. It is home to both private and business owned general aviation aircraft.

Great Barrington Airport is a destination airport for visitors who come to enjoy the many year round outdoor recreational activities, cultural events, fine dining and boutique shopping that Great Barrington and the Berkshires offer. Be sure to check the “Visiting Pilots” section of our website. Many local businesses and destination locations in and around the area are featured.

Flight Instruction:

Berkshire Aviation Enterprises has been training aviators for over 60 years at Great Barrington Airport (GBR). During this period we have learned that each student is unique. Students bring their aspirations, skills and motivation to fly and we adapt to them. We develop a personalized curriculum for each of our students, designed to achieve each individual's goals -- whether as a recreational, business or airline pilot.

The one common element in each curriculum is a high standard of performance for both our instructors and our students. Each instructor is required to undergo continual recurrent training. Every student is instilled with, and is required to have, a professional attitude toward aviation. The net result is a safe and pleasant training experience and a well prepared aviator.

Maintenance: FAA Certified Repair Station (BPGR58C).
