John 4:19-24

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

V.23

• The Father is seeking worshipers

V.24

• God is spirit, we are spirit/flesh hybrids. In worship, physical can only ever be a means to help our spirit to connect with God.
• Worship in the Spirit
• Worship in the Truth

“We are to present our bodies to God in a posture consistent with the inner spirit in worship. Standing, clapping, dancing, lifting the hands, lifting the head are postures consistent with the spirit of praise. To sit still looking dour is simply not appropriate for praise. Kneeling, bowing the head, lying prostrate are postures consistent with the spirit of adoration and humility.” (Foster, p. 169)

Challenge

Three times while you are worshiping this week, think about the truth of that worship moment and find a way to express that truth with your physical body as you attempt to express it with your soul. Explore physical expressions you do not normally do.

Receiving a confession part 2

Gleaned from Celebration of Discipline p.154-157

• Already talked about living under the Cross.
  • Nothing someone says can disturb us
  • Frees us from temptation of “Spiritual Domination” (use confession against someone, attempt to control them or straighten them out)
• Keep confidence
• Prepare with prayer.
  • Asking for more of Jesus to shine through us: His love, acceptance, forgiveness…
  • For discernment, how to minister post confession
  • Asking Jesus to stand in-between
  • Pray for them while they share
• Be silent while other shares. (NO offhanded comment to relieve tension, no prying for more information).
• Silence in the room can be a powerful open door for the person to share more.
• In the authority of Jesus announce forgiveness
• Pray out loud with the person. For healing of inner wounds from the sin. Feel free to lay on hands

Giving a confession part 2

Gleaned from Celebration of Discipline p.151-154

• Give specific, concrete sins.
• Don’t be overly concerned with mentioning every small details
• Sorrow is necessary to a good confession. “Sorrow as it relates to confession is not primarily an emotion, though emotion may be involved. It is an abhorrence at having committed the sin, a deep regret at having offended the heart of the Father.”
• Ask God for a “yearning for holy living, a hatred for unholy living.”
• You don’t have to convince God to forgive, in fact He is working to help you desire His forgiveness.
• Have a clear end point on self-examination. (Don’t let it grow into a permanent habit of self-condemnation, “Confession begins in sorrow, but it ends in joy.”

Who to go to.

Receive a confession

Forgiveness is not: That’s ok, not a big deal, well there is a good excuse

It’s also not *GASP you did what?

Must see your own wickedness first:

“Anybody who lives beneath the Cross and who has discerned in the Cross of Jesus the utter wickedness of all men and of his own heart will find there is no sin that can ever be alien to him. Anybody who has once been horrified by the dreadfulness of his own sin that nailed Jesus to the Cross will no longer be horrified by even the rankest sins of a brother.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer Life Together p.118

Bonhoeffer goes on to say that you should not receive a confession unless you yourself are practicing it yourself.

Giving a Confession Part I

Corporate vs Private confession?

1st Timothy 2:5-6a

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

James 5:13-16

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Quote from Richard Foster in section “Diary of Confession” on p.149 of CoD.

St. Alphonsus Liguori “For a good confession three things are necessary: an examination of conscience, sorrow, and a determination to avoid sin.” (Quoted in CoD p.151)

Challenge: This week confess a sin to another Christian after having done those three things.

Episode 35

Pause to go into this. This is not the first step, it is a path for the mature.

When we first come to Christ we crucify our will, and we have to keep repeating this. However with guidance we can get stuck thinking there should be no input from us.

However I would say there comes a point in your walk with God where you need to get clear on what you want and bring that to Jesus to be molded.

2nd Corinthians 2:12-14

12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

Psalm 32:8-9

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

9 Do not be like the horse or the mule,

   which have no understanding

but must be controlled by bit and bridle

or they will not come to you.

Galatians 3:23-27

23 Before the coming of this faith,[j] we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Galatians 5:13-16

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

Challenge:

On a big question you’ve been wanting God’s guidance on: spend a chunk of time reflecting on it, then write down clearly and specifically what you want. Then start asking God for it. Ask repeatedly and listen for His response (whether encouragement or instruction)

Acts 13:1-3

1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas,Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

Discerning to what to do next in 2007 and 2008.

2007: Group helped me understand why not to go to Mexico. Timing and Scripture helped me decide to go to Joey.

2008: Before meeting could not see how group could unite…

Challenge: Pick something you have been wanting to know God’s will about. Gather together at least three Christians and ask them to help you discern what God’s will is.

Hebrews 5:12-14

12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Monk: Our primary work is prayer

My parents’ secret to raising kids…

Prayer is powerful to change my surroundings, but more and more I am finding talking with Jesus changing me.

My fear is that you’ve already become satisfied with your level of prayer.

1st John 3:1-3

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,[a] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Mars and Prayer

Episode 30

Approach prayer as something you are learning:

“It was liberating to me to understand that prayer involved a learning process. I was set free to question, to experiment, even to fail, for I knew I was learning.” (Foster, p.36)

Lots of ways to learn, but one to focus on this week: learn from experts. Story of Elon Musk knowing nothing about rockets to starting SpaceX

“To supplement his reading, Musk asked a lot of questions of a lot of people. (Rocket expert Jim) Cantrell, who calls Musk “by far the single smartest person that I have ever worked with,” says that Musk “hired as many of my colleagues in the rocket and spacecraft business that were willing to consult with him” and that “it was as if he would suck the experience out of them.” (Urban)

How does this relate to prayer:

“As I was learning I sought out persons who seemed to experience greater power and effectiveness in prayer than I and I asked them to teach me everything they knew.” (Foster, p.37)

Challenge: This week, go to someone like Foster describes and ask them to teach you everything they know about prayer.

29 Back to Sleep

Journal

Conversation with another man in ministry. Waking up and not able to fall back to sleep. Journaling prayers.

Psalm 90 shows a depth of heart and thought. It is crafted, and yet it is raw. It is a prayer very different from how we normally pray.

Challenge:

At least two times this week write out your prayer as you spend time with Jesus. Try to go for a longer prayer time than is typical for you.
