Yountville CA, US – The French Laundry

We start our tour in sunny California… named the “Best Restaurant in the World” by Restaurant Magazine in 2003 and 2004, The French Laundry in Yountville is chef Thomas Keller’s masterpiece. The building itself was built in the 1900s as a saloon, and was taken over by Keller in 1994. Base meals will set you back close to $300 but the American-inspired French cuisine really is second to none.

Chicago, US - Alinea 

Next stop Chicago for Grant Achatz’s Alinea restaurant, renowned for deconstructed classic flavours, as well as the extravagant chocolate course, shown below. Including flavours of peanut, honey and blueberry, along with frozen chocolate mousse, creme brulee and other goodies, the course is created in front of diners by the chefs on a silicone tablecloth.

New York, US – Eleven Madison Park

Next up New York, and Eleven Madison Park, run by chef Daniell Humm and manager Will Guidara. One menu option sees diners select one core ingredient to be integrated into four different courses, and innovation combined with the finest quality cooking and hospitality have recently slotted this restaurant into the world’s top 10.

Macau, China - Robuchon a Galera

Quick hop over from New York to Macau now, and both the state and Joël Robuchon’s only three-star Michelin restaurant. With a plush and comfortable interior, a vast array of wines and true three star cooking, this really is Robuchon’s best.

Japan - Hyotei Kyoto

From China to Japan now, and the 300 year old Hyotei Kyoto restaurant. Originally a teahouse, the restaurant is split into two sections – one offering pricey Kyo-kaiseki cooking and the other cheaper, seasonal obento lunch boxes. The Kyo-kaiseki dishes are served to diners in a number of different small houses around a manicured garden, including pond and trees.

Tokyo, Japan – Koju 

On to the capital Tokyo now for another intimate culinary experience at Koju – the eight-seater restaurant run by chef Tooru Okuda. The proprietor is warm and friendly and the food is elegant, seasonal and minimalist.

Bray, UK – The Fat Duck

From Japan we make the transition across into Europe, with the first stop at Bray in Berkshire, England. Chef Heston Blumenthal is renowned for his scientific approach to cooking and for concocting magical and unusual combinations of smells, flavours and sensations for diners. His infamous snail porridge (below) is accompanied by shaved fennel and julienned ham with garlic and parsley puree.

Paris, France - Ledoyen

From Blumenthal’s mad scientist approach, a quick hop over (or under) the Channel to France’s oldest restaurant, Ledoyen. Although the building started life as an inn which served the milk of the cows which grazed in the grounds around it, things have changed somewhat, and Ledoyen is now one of the most sought after eating experiences in the world.

Lyon, France - Paul Bocuse

On to Lyon from Paris, where legendary chef Paul Bocuse is based. A leading exponent of the nouvelle cuisine style, Bocuse is a towering figure of modern gastronomy and his main Lyon restaurant l’Auberge du Pont de Collonges is a Mecca for food enthusiasts.

Girona, Spain - El Celler de Can Roca

Finally, from France we grab some quick flights to Spain, on to Girona and the family establishment El Cellar de Can Roca. Run by three brothers, the cooking is playful and ingenious, mixing Catalan ingredients in simple but surprising combinations to make this restaurant a culinary jewel in Spain’s crown, and the brothers celebrities in the city.

In fact, wine regions are such good holiday destinations, it would be a shame to restrict them just to those with a passion for the grape. Here we look at two contrasting wine regions, the old world of Bordeaux in France, versus the new world of Napa Valley, California, and assess their various merits as classic wine destinations.

Scenery

Both locations provide stunning natural scenery, Napa’s rolling hillside vineyards giving way to the towering Mayacamas Mountains to the north and the Vaca Mountains to the east. Take a drive between the valleys and you’ll be rewarded by outstanding views.

The historic towns and villages dotted across the Bordeaux landscape hint at the ancient traditions associated with this region. A trip round the winding lanes snaking through the vineyards provides breathtaking scenery around every corner.

Towns and cities

The Bordeaux region is brimming with history, and the area is littered with ancient towns and monuments. The city of Bordeaux itself is a must-visit attraction, with great restaurants and fascinating architecture galore, there’s plenty to explore.

The Bordeaux region also finds itself blessed with some of the most charming towns in France. Saint-Émilion, nestling on a hillside amongst ancient vineyards, is one of the most beautiful, and offers guided tours of its many local chateaus.

Napa Valley is sparsely populated compared to its French counterpart, the small towns and cities giving way to the beauty of the natural environment. The city of Napa is the largest in the region, but for a slice of proper American city culture, San Francisco, only an hour’s drive away and over the famous Golden Gate Bridge, is the place to go.

Cuisine

Napa Valley was voted the world’s best wine and food region in 2010 by TripAdvisor, cementing it as a destination of choice for the discerning gastronaut. Yountville, in the heart of Napa County, is noted as having the highest concentration of Michelin-star restaurants in the US, and the jewel in the crown is Thomas Keller’s French Laundry, voted amongst the best restaurants in the world.

Bordeaux is similarly teeming with great restaurants, and is known as a top destination for seasoned diners. La Tupina has been voted the “best bistro in the world”, and situated right in the heart of historic Bordeaux city, it promises an authentically gallic gastronomic experience.

Wine tasting experiences

The Napa Valley region caters for tourists extensively, and the Napa Valley wine train is a must for any enthusiast. The train provides a three-hour tour of the area, with top quality lunch and wine provided, as you sit back and enjoy the view. Also on offer are special wine tours, with the train stopping off at various local wineries, giving you the opportunity to really get to know this fascinating region and its wine history.

The Bordeaux region has plenty to explore and many of the local chateaus are open to the public. Day tours of the many places of interest give you access to some of the finest wine producers in the world, from Médoc in the west to the Entre-Deux-Mers appellations in the east of the region.

Sónar, Barcelona, Spain

Sónar is distinct from many of Europe’s larger summer festivals, as it takes place in a city. Barcelona plays host to this über-cool celebration of electronica, with parties taking place right in the vibrant city centre by day, and on the outskirts of the city by night.

Garden Festival, Croatia

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful ancient village of Petrcane on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, this festival takes place mainly on a wooded peninsula right by the water’s edge. One of Portugal’s largest summer festivals, Sudoeste takes place in the small village of Zambujeira do Mar on Portugal’s south-west coast. The festival itself plays host to some of the biggest names from the alternative music scene, while the idyllic charm of the nearby village and it’s spectacular beach makes this a must-visit festival destination.

Optimus Alive, Lisbon, Portugal

A strong British-based line-up sees this Portuguese festival near Lisbon attract many Brits looking for fun and music in the sun (and not the mud). The festival is staged by the river Tagus, in a suburb just outside the city, so a trip into the city itself is a must for any visitor to this sunny home-away-from-home for British music lovers.

Rock Coast Festival, Tenerife

This new festival in the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, promises to be an unmissable event and could well take it’s place amongst Europe’s regular roster of great summer music festivals. Top acts have been confirmed for the 2012 line-up, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Fatboy Slim and Orbital, ensuring that this party by the sea will definitely go with a bang.

Casino Royale – Loket, Czech Republic

Bond films have taken in a variety of glamorous locations over the years, but this is perhaps the one that symbolised that Bond was back, with a bang. Loket castle in the Czech Republic (posing as Montenegro), provides one of the many beautiful European locations in Daniel Craig’s first outing as the debonair British spy.

Ronin – Villefranche-Sur-Mer, France

Historic European cities have always been the ideal setting for destructive car chases, and Ronin packs in a few crowd-pleasing set-pieces in various glamorous locations. The beautiful seafront village of Villefranche-sur-Mer in France is the location for one of the most memorable scenes in the film, a daredevil dash through the narrow streets of this idyllic town on the French Riviera.

The Italian Job – Turin, Italy

Turin is the setting for the infamous, and perfectly choreographed, Mini chase scene in this Michael Caine ‘60s classic. The Minis take in all the sights of this beautiful city in Northern Italy, and many of the locations remain unchanged to this day. The weir beside il ponte di piazza Vittorio is where the cars take an impromptu dip in the river Po.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Stockholm, Sweden

This modern noir based on the novel by Steig Larsson bucks the trend for films set in European cities: it takes a stunning location – much of the film was shot in the capital Stockholm – and turns it into a nightmarish, dark, dirty underworld. Suffice to say, in real life, the city bears little resemblance to its portrayal in this disturbing thriller.

The Godfather – Savoca, Sicily

Though largely set in America, the European scenes in this epic tale of organised crime provide a welcome change of pace and surroundings. The perfect hideout for fugitive Michael Corleone, the ancient hillside village of Savoca in Sicily is where Al Pacino’s Godfather-in-waiting chooses to lay low following the murder of a corrupt New York police chief.

The American – Abruzzo, Italy

George Clooney’s hitman on the run chooses Italy’s beautiful Abruzzo region as a setting to go incognito, posing as a travel photographer while he waits for the heat to die down. The winding streets and historic architecture perfectly compliment this old-fashioned thriller, while the epic landscapes hint at the isolation of this stunning part of Italy.

Molja Lighthouse is ‘room 47’ of the stylish Hotel Brosundet, whose other rooms are on the shore nearby in the main building. The lighthouse room offers stunning views out into the Norwegian Sea and surrounding islands, as well as back onto the picturesque harbour of Alesund – perfect for creating some romantic memories! The lighthouse room was refitted by top Norwegian architects Snohetta, with design combining rustic elements with a chic, urban finish.

Alesund lies almost halfway up the western coastline of Norway, and is a busy seaport as well as the perfect base from which to explore the nearby Sunnmøre Alps and surrounding fjords. The nearby village of Geiranger and Geirangerfjord are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, and were also commended as the best tourist destination in Scandinavia by Lonely Planet.

The town of Alesund is renowned as the centre of the Art Nouveau movement in Norway. Its building are remarkably uniform in design as the town was almost entirely rebuilt between 1904 and 1907 after the Alesund Fire of 1904 destroyed much of the old town.

Visitors interested in fishing can take advantage of Alesund’s position as the centre of Norway’s fishing industry, with many trips available to travellers. Ornithologists will be keen to visit the bird island of Runde, while the town’s many boutiques and top restaurants will keep the more urban-minded visitors more than happy!

Alesund is extremely easy to get to, and travellers can choose from one of a variety of ways to visit the town. The drive to Alesund from Oslo, Trondheim or Bergen is extremely scenic and also includes a few breathtaking views during the ferry crossings. The Norwegian Coastal Express operates northbound and southbound services in and out of the town, while good bus connections are also available from Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. Alesund Airport Vigra is only 20 minutes from the town centre, while the railway also offers an attractive and scenic option.

Delightful Da Nang

It’s surprising how many people manage to skip over Da Nang. It has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, amazing seafood and fantastic attractions in the surrounding area. China Beach is every bit as beautiful as it was in the past and extremely safe. Surrounding attractions include a trip to Ba Na Mountain Hill Station, a motorbike trip along the crest of Monkey Mountain on the Son Tra Peninsula, a day trip to Lang Co beach to the north, plus the tourists’ favourite Marble Mountain. Marble Mountain is popular as it is amazingly beautiful and unique. There are fantastic opportunities here for dancing, drinking and the beach is a Mecca for surfers from all over the world. Da Nang is a place not to be missed on any Vietnam holiday.

Marvellous Mekong River Delta

Mekong Delta is the perfect place to relax during a holiday to Vietnam. Classed as the southern rice bowl of Vietnam, it is a fertile area covered with rice fields and the winding tributaries of the Mekong River. Originating from the high plateau of Tibet, the Mekong River stretches over 2600 miles and travels through China, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia before reaching Vietnam. Delightful DaLat

In the central highlands lies DaLat, or ‘Le Petit Paris’, as this former French hill station was also known. The Vietnamese like to name it City of Eternal Spring because of the cooler, fresher air of this mountainous region. Nestled in the highlands, the town is known for its tranquil beauty and was a favourite of the French during colonial days. There is a lot of French influence here and there are hundreds of picturesque colonial villas dotted throughout the town. The alpine landscape of pine forests, rolling hills and tranquil lakes make it a popular getaway for honeymooners, as well as regular holidaymakers.

Hang in Nha Trang

Nha Trang offers the widest selection of accommodation in the central coastal region of all the seaside areas in Vietnam. It proudly hosts some of the best-known beaches and pristine crystal clear waters. Popular for snorkelling and diving, the area has a lively atmosphere and many ocean front seafood restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Stunning examples of the Cham culture can also be found in the 10^th century Po Nagar Towers.

Happening Halong Bay

Halong Bay situated in the North of the country is one of the most scenic areas in Vietnam. It has over 3000 fascinating sculptured islands rising from the clear emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Choose Your Destination Wisely

Choosing the right destination can result in you saving a massive amount on the cost of your family holidays. 2012 will be a great year to visit Spain and its surrounding islands. All Inclusive vs Self Catering

Both all inclusive and self catering holidays can provide excellent value for money on a family holiday. Which is best for you depends entirely on the type of holiday you and your family plan to have, and a little thought about this before you go can save you hundreds on the cost of food.

If you are the type of family who enjoys lounging by the pool, engaging in the activities the hotel has to offer and making full use of the resort, an all inclusive holiday might be the best option for you. Being safe in the knowledge that the children are catered for and every extra drink or ice cream they want doesn’t dip into the spending money can be a huge relief.

Alternatively if you are the type of family who enjoy getting out and exploring the area around you an all inclusive holiday will more than likely not be suitable. You don’t want to pay for meals that you don’t end up eating because you are always away from your accommodation.

Instead choose somewhere that has its own kitchen facilities and visit local markets for great cheap produce that you can make your own delicious meals from.

Taking a packed lunch or picnic with you in the days you are away from your accommodation can save money on expensive lunches and snacks in restaurants.

Be Savvy with Holiday Extras

With any holiday those little extras that we just can’t go without can soon increase the price. You need to factor these in to any holiday budget before you go or you could leave yourself out of pocket.

Something that you should never holiday without is travel insurance.
