I purchased one of these right after our first child was born. For the price, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the video is quite good, and it's easy enough for anyone to use.

The few downsides I've found:
1) The USB connector seems fragile. I happened to have a USB extension cable sitting around, so I use that; however, I could see the connector breaking off from hanging off a USB port for awhile. If they would build a cable and retraction device in, it would be much more convenient.
2) If you erase all images, the file numbering resets. So every time you wipe the pictures you have copied to your computer off the Flip, you will end up with new videos with the same file names as existing ones. Support says there is no way to change this behavior.

I got this camera as a gift for my geeky boyfriend. He LOVES it and carries it around all the time (unlike the photo camera he had before)! He loves that you don't need any extra cables to carry around - not for charging, not for copying/saving files. That's the main thing he loves about it. Besides it takes a decent quality movies. Not as good as some big camera, but it's portable. The files are huge (i.e. not for posting online), but that's HD, so what fo you expect?

My only complaints are that if the battery gets low the camera won't turn on at all unless you remove the battery and then put it right back. This sometimes happens with 2/3 battery left. First off, I really like this camcorder. My wife and I had been wanting one for a while but never could get past the 'there's only an hours worth of recording to be had'. Since this came out I figured two hours was more justifiable. As such, it was a birthday present from my wife.

These were originally made for YouTube uploaders, you know, for skater kids to humiliate themselves with entertaining videos of their trick-failure pain and agony.

On the good side, this thing is tiny compared to regular camcorders, easily fitting into one's pocket. The device goes from off to ready to record in a little over a second, has an internal flash drive holding 120 minutes and looks good to boot. Everything you need it has on it including rechargable batteries(An improvement over the Mino since you can put in new ones if the ones you have run out), internal programs that run on the PC to sort and upload the videos and a handy flip up USB2.0 arm for conecting to the PC which also charges the batteries. The camera also records in 720p and, lets face it, standard definition televisions have already been all but fazed out, so buying a standard def camcorder isn't that future proof. The device also has a Mini HDMI out for connecting directly to a high def TV.

Now the bad news. It only records in 720p, that's no problem except that if you have a 'very' large TV, say over 46in, it will make a difference that this is not in full 1080p, this wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that there are cheaper Flip-like camcorders that record in this higher def. The Flip also looks grainy in darker areas but for the price of the device one shouldn't expect miricles. Also, and the biggest problem, the device has an internal flash drive. Yes I know I put that as a good point but hear me out. Once you've recorded your two hours worth the device is worthless since it can't swap out memory cards and all videos are stored on the one drive so you can't swap out for different events either. Finishing, the features are incredibly sparse, only a zoom, but you can fix this in post on your PC through other programs.

All in all, a good product well worth the price but if you need better features in higher def at the expence of quality, or if you need more than two hours worth of coverage, there are cheaper products out there. Get more detail about Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (Black).

Pros: The video quality is very good for a pocket camcorder this size.

I love this Flip HD. I've tried many other camcorders (DXG, Samsung, Kodak, Sanyo, Panasonic) in this same category and NONE have compared to the video quality of the Flip HD. Each time I tested a different camcorder, I made sure I did it in the evening with the lights on in my livingroom. Each time, the others were dark, grainy and had difficulty adjusting to the lamps - took several seconds to focus again. The Flip HD had no issues, and provided clear and bright video. I should mention that my livingroom is painted a rose color with burgundy furniture, so I feel this was a true test of video quality. By the way, the reason I kept trying other camcorders was that the FlipHD is video only, whereas the others took photos too. However, it wasn't worth the compromise. Besides, I can always create photos with the FlipShare software that's built into the unit.
As far as the battery, I too had the problem with the battery pack erroring out when charging. So, I got rechargeable batteries to use and have had no issues. I recently used this to record my grandson's first birthday. I was able to capture all the important moments of the day on a single charge.
Bottom line is that I am very pleased with this camcorder and recommend it highly.

My wife and I were just looking for a HD camera to film our 3 boys with. We wanted something easy to use and easy to carry everywhere. THis is small and fits in your pocket or purse. Also wanted something that stored video on the drive and hooked right up to the computer instead of having to deal with tapes. We took the camera to the lake and were able to film the boys fishing, camping, and playing. Camera holds 2 hrs of footage which is a good amount. Very easy to use and the ease of downloading video to computer was great. If you are going to download video to a DVD(standard 4.7 gb) you can probably only do about 30 minutes worth of video as this is HD video and takes up more space than a regular video. This is a great little product. I've only used video cams on my cell phone or digital camera so this is a nice upgrade for a casual user. What surprised me is that according to the package the minimum system requirement in terms of a PC processor is a screaming fast 3.0 Ghz Intel Pentium 4. I couldn't find this anywhere on Amazon's product page. Had I known this it would have probably prevented me from ordering this. However, I didn't have trouble using it with my 1.8 ghz 2 year old pc although I have 4 GB ram and a newer high end video card. The only glitch I've found so far is that I could NOT play videos in full screen mode. Just a little caveat- if you have an older computer this little device may give your PC a hiccup. I give it 5 stars. Hands down it is the best camera out there of this size and capacity. That said I did notice two things that made me frown...but i got over them quickly. First reviews say this and so will I, low light situations will be grainy. It was the middle of the afternoon and slightly overcast and the house here had lights on but when I played back the video on the computer I noticed that well lighted areas were sharp and less than great lighted areas were grainy. Fact of life. This must just be given when you buy the camera. That said, the quality doesn't suffer much, just don't expect that "primetime HDTV quality." That said, it is a compact camera so the quality will be so much better than any vga camera ever was but you may not be happy with the HD quality if you are looking for that "primetime HDTV quality."

You will need to fiddle if you have a mac with the installation software, but I actually just loaded it right into iMovie and surprisingly easily. I LOVED that. I am used to having to copy the file to my computer and then convert it and it is a mess! they sent me a bad battery pack - one of them had 2 negative ends. i called them (a few times) and was rudely told i wouldn't get one for at LEAST another 3 weeks - they wanted me to send the battery pack in, wait 3 weeks for them to inspect it. then wait another 2 weeks to get a new battery pack.

i didn't buy a product to be told that it won't work for the first 5 weeks. so i complained to amazon and they set me up with a refund for any battery pack i bought. i sent them the receipt and they credited me back the difference.

This video recorder is incredible. It is so small, but produces videos of amazing clarity. I've had other larger and much more expensive camcorders, but this little device is better than any I've used in the past. It is portable, so easy to use our 5 year old triplet grandchildren love to make their own videos.

Flip Video UltraHD. 8 GB/2 hour 720p pocket camcorder. I wanted an HD video camera but cannot now lay down $600+ for a larger, more traditional camcorder type. Notwithstanding price, I also wanted something very portable for spontaneous videos. That's not gonna happen with anything you can't put in your pocket (i.e. $1000 bag-cam).

Pros:
-Daylight HD image quality is outstanding
-Very nice, simple interface that is quick to use for reaction to situations that arise demanding video
-Comes with rechargeable battery pack and you can also use AAs (2)
-Mini-HDMI out port
-Low price
-Beautiful industrial design, high quality build
-Incredibly attractive packaging for you gadget buffs (me included)

Cons:
-Grainy and flaky in low light (as is just about every sub-$1000 cam)
-Sometimes sketchy battery life
-No memory card slot
-No image stabilization makes for shaky cam unless held pretty still

Overall:

Definitely worth buying for those everyday HD videos you want to take. Won't replace a nicer camcorder but is great to stick in pocket for all kinds of events, or just carry all the time. The ONLY thing the minohd has over this is size. If you want replaceable batteries, better control interface, and HDMI out in exchange for just a little more size, this is the pocket cam for you.

The world will change when somebody comes up with a pocket cam with the following features:

-Sub-$200
-Great image stabilization
-Low-light performance
-Memory expansion
-External mic jack

And don't tell me that the Kodak Zi8 fits this because it does not (read the reviews).

I got a no frills 60 minute Flip recorder last spring and loved it. The software installation was perfect, the videos were uploaded immediately. Then the UltraHD arrived. This new device has 120 minutes and zoom, what could be better? Wrong. This HD camera is AWFUL. I sent the first one back after the battery wouldn't charge. I am having the same issue now with the second. I have lost video, including of my five-year-old's birthday. This unit is so disappointing. I don't know what's gone wrong with the design, but even dealing with email customer service for Flip is very frustrating. Save your money. This product is junk. The Flip UltraHD is very easy to use, their manual (such as it is) is not really necessary. It has excellent low-light capability and a reasonably wide angle lens. You don't want to pan/move the camera much when using as this will cause a somewhat fuzzy image. To use, just charge the battery on your pc usb jack for several hours, press the power switch on the side, and then press the red button.....your now making a video. Play back thru the HDMI output is excellent but you will need to buy a cable with a normal HDMI plug on one end and a mini-HDMI plug on the other. You could also use an adapter with a normal HDMI cable. Don't bother loading the FlipShare that comes within the camcorder as it is out of date, aren't they always. Go to their site, download the latest, and load that into your pc. The FlipShare program could use some improvements. The TV type DVD's I've made from the Flip using Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 play without any problems on the DVD player attached to my HD TV. The encode time using Premiere Elements is about 20 to 1, that is a 1 hour video took my pc 20 (twenty) hours to encode. My pc: Win-XP, Core2Duo6600 running at 3GHz, 2GB ram, large SATA hard drive.

I'm on my third and all three have proven defective. (But they are perfect for my work. I would NEVER recommend them to anyone for casual use.) When they work, they are great. One had sound issues and then one day just died. Another one, the record button became inoperable. And the one I JUST bought no longer CHARGES. It's too bad they can't get it right and even more unforgivable is their CUSTOMER SERVICE. Horrible. They KNOW about these issues and DO NOT CARE. So go ahead and buy one-- I did three times. And if you can get six months of use out of it- you are lucky. And if you don't FLIP VIDEO DOES NOT CARE. Two stars for the few times it does work. For a small, cheap video camera, this is not a bad purchase. I have found difficulties on the following:

1). It is difficult to tell if the camera is fully charged, and in most instances I have charged it all night and the battery did not last long. I am probably going to opt to buying just a regular battery charger.

2). The camera connects through a connected USB and hangs upside down. This puts stress on the USB, and is difficult to connect if you are using any of your other USB's.

3). The Flipshare software is not that good. You can not edit in a large screen mode. You have to edit with a small preview. Full screen mode is only for playback, and you don't have controls to forward, rewind, or pause in full screen mode.

4). The buttons on the camera can be difficult. If you are in playback and you are trying to forward through a video...this is also the same button used to go to your next recorded video. Often you start forwarding to review your video and the video jumps to the next recorded video.

5). It seems you can not operate the camera without using the video screen display. This uses up battery power fast. In instances where the camera is stationary, I want to be able to turn the display off.

6). Video doesn't auto-steady well. If I move...I can shaky video.

I use this camera all of the time. It is small enough to be handy for kid shots and portable enough to have with me on almost all adventures. If you are considering buying the Flip HD, check your computer to make sure it meets the minimum system requirements needed to interact with the camera!!

I have a very nice Sony Vaio laptop that was purchased less than a year ago, so I just assumed there would be no problem. My Flip HD was never able to connect, and when I called the Flip help line, I was told that I needed a faster processor. None of the computers in my home or office (and I upgrade almost yearly) met these requirements (Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz processor or faster).

I am now returning the camera and getting the regular version, which will work with my computer.
