Application story: Increasing safety of sea travel in Polar Regions: Ice detection with thermal imaging cameras!

Application story: Increasing safety of sea travel in Polar Regions: Ice detection with thermal imaging cameras!

Abstract:The earth’s Polar Regions are considered by many seafarers to be among the most challenging environments in the world. The combination of extremely long nights, harsh weather and icebergs can make a trip through Arctic and Antarctic waters dangerous. Nowadays these trips can be made safer by using a thermal imaging camera from FLIR Systems.

Glacier ice is difficult to track by marine radar as the radar signal is scattered by air bubbles and other imperfections in the ice. Many experienced seafarers can attest to the difficulty of detecting ice with radar. Even the radar signal returns from large icebergs are much lower than from ship targets because of the lower radar reflectivity of ice (and especially snow) if compared with steel. Detection of ice targets is therefore rather difficult, especially if they have low or smooth profiles.

Installing a FLIR thermal imaging camera on vessels traversing Arctic waters will help avoid collisions, increase efficiency and help safeguard the safety of the crew in case of man overboard situations regardless of lighting conditions and in all types of weather.

More information about the use of FLIR maritime thermal imaging cameras for ice detection can be found in the attached application story.
Application story: Traffic monitoring and roadsway surveillance

Abstract:As the amount of cars on our roads is perpetually increasing, the demand for accurate traffic monitoring and roadway surveillance systems is rising correspondingly. Such systems need to operate 24/7, without pause. CCTV cameras are often used for this purpose, but these cameras have severe limitations when it comes to nighttime operation. They are also subject to many limiting factors during the day. FLIR thermal imaging cameras are not hampered by such limiting factors. They produce high contrast thermal images in all weather conditions and regardless of lighting, making them perfectly suited for working with video analytics software in traffic monitoring and roadway surveillance systems.

More information about FLIR thermal imaging cameras for traffic monitoring and roadway surveillance can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Agricam CaDDi Mastitis detection in dairy farms

Abstract:Modern farms increasingly resemble factories in their makeup as they become more and more industrialized. The present day farmer spends less time performing menial tasks and more time behind the computer. In these circumstances good automatic monitoring systems are a must to ensure quality and continuity. One company that realizes this is the Linköping, Sweden, based Agricam, which has developed an automatic monitoring system for dairy cows using FLIR thermal imaging cameras.

In dairy farms the biggest issue to tackle is a disease called Mastitis. This potentially fatal mammary gland infection is the most common disease in dairy cattle. It can be treated very easily if diagnosed in an early stage. When Mastitis is not detected in an early stage it not only causes pain and general discomfort for the animal, the disease also has to be treated with antibiotics. This leads to veterinary costs, but also leads to substantial financial losses for the dairy farmer in the form of discarded milk. Due to strict European rules the milk has to be discarded until all of the antibiotic drug residues have left the animal's system. Estimates vary, but it is certain that the total annual cost of Mastitis in dairy cows for European farmers runs in tens of millions, with the average dairy farmer losing 20,000 to 60,000 Euros each year due to Mastitis. Agricam’s Mastitis detection system CaDDi, which is based on FLIR thermal imaging cameras, is designed to detect developing Mastitis in an early stage, preventing such losses.

More information about Agricam, the CaDDi Mastitis detection system and the potential thermal imaging cameras have for the detection of thermal related health issues in general can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Police Zaanstreek

Abstract: Throughout history criminals have used the cover of night to commit crimes like burglary undetected. Today most acts of burglary still take place at night. To aid in detection of suspects the Dutch police department of Zaanstreek-Waterland deploys a new tool: thermal imaging cameras from FLIR Systems.

As a test the Zaanstreek-Waterland police department installed FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging cameras in a searchlight pan and tilt platform on the roof of two of the new VW Touran patrol cars. Within several months the use of the FLIR thermal imaging cameras led to arrests that would not have been made without the aid of the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging cameras.

More information about the test with the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging cameras by the Zaanstreek-Waterland police department and about the use of thermal imaging for crime fighting and automotive night vision can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: FIAT monitoring induction bonding

Abstract: Cars need to be light to be efficient in their fuel use, but they also have to be strong. To achieve both of these goals modern car panels are made of a combination of a metal layer on top and a structural adhesive layer underneath. These layers are glued together using induction.

But this is a tricky process. The temperature has to be exactly right for the adhesion to work properly. To ensure that the adhesion goes smoothly FIAT has started to use FLIR thermal imaging cameras to provide automatic feedback during the process.

Application story: Leakage detection at swimming pool in Italian holiday apartment

Application story: Leakage detection at swimming pool in Italian holiday apartment

Abstract:The administrator of a holiday apartment on the Italian island of Sardinia noticed there was a problem with the swimming pool: it was leaking. Badly. The pool was leaking at a rate of almost 19,000 liters of water per day. This particular apartment is located at the village Porto Rotondo, at the Costa Smeralda, the northeast coast of Sardinia, which is a very popular – and thus relatively expensive – holiday destination. He made this discovery at the beginning of the summer, just before the high season started, so the problem had to be fixed – and soon – before the guests would arrive.

The conventional method to find the leakage would be to open up the pavement around the pool and dig up the sludge pipes, but that was not an option. That would take too much time; paying customers would be denied access to the pool due to the repairs if that method was used.

That is why the administrator hired a thermography consultant. Due to the swift and effective repairs that were enabled by the thermographic inspection using a FLIR E60 thermal imaging camera the pool was up and running when the guests arrived.

More information about the thermographic survey of the swimming pool and about thermographic surveys with the FLIR E60 in general can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Dassault Falcon laminar air flow test flight

Abstract:Air flowing across an airplane’s wings will provide the lift that is essential for flight, but it also causes friction and drag, which slows down the aircraft and causes inefficient propulsion. Laminar air flow along an airplane’s wings can theoretically greatly reduce drag, improving the airplane’s efficiency. That’s why many aerodynamics researchers are looking into wing designs that stimulate laminar air flow. To that end Dassault Aviation has performed test flights with a Falcon 7X using a FLIR SC7750L thermal imaging camera that can differentiate between laminar flows and turbulent flows, allowing the researchers to evaluate the laminarity of the air flow on a wing during the flight.

Air flow along a wing can be laminar, which means that no turbulence occurs and the amount of friction is low, or it can be turbulent, which is characterized by larger amounts of friction. The relation between air friction and temperature is well established in scientific literature; an increase in friction will lead to an increase in temperature. The FLIR SC7750L thermal imaging camera can measure temperature gradients at high altitudes, despite the low temperature and pressure. This allows the thermal imaging camera to distinguish between areas of the wing where the air flow is laminar and where the air flow is turbulent.

More information about the test flight, laminar air flow and the capabilities of the FLIR SC7750L thermal imaging camera for the mapping of laminarity of the air flow along a wing can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Arbon Lifeboat Station

Abstract: Bordered by three countries, lake Constance - or Bodensee as it is called in the German language - is traversed by hundreds of people each year. A number of rescue societies make sure that these people can safely enjoy the beautiful lake. On the Swiss side of the lake that task is fulfilled by the Seerettungsdienst Arbon, with the aid of a FLIR M-Series thermal imaging camera. The volunteers of the lifeboat station at Arbon compared several nighttime vision systems, including light amplifying systems, but it was the FLIR M-Series thermal imaging camera that came out on top.

Application story: Transpole Lille bus depot early fire warning system

Abstract: Dwindling fossil fuel reserves and rising fuel prices give plenty of cause to look for other types of fuel. That is why the Lille Métropole Communauté Urbaine and transport company Transpole decided to start using natural gas as a fuel. To that end natural gas is stored at the Transpole bus depot in Wattrelos, near the French Belgian border. But natural gas storage can be dangerous, for if a fire breaks out there is a very small but definite risk it might cause a devastating gas explosion. An early warning system using thermal imaging cameras from FLIR Systems provides the solution. By detecting a fire in an extremely early stage, likely even before the fire actually starts, the system ensures the safety of both the Transpole employees and of the inhabitants of the surrounding area.

More information about the early fire warning system based on FLIR A-Series thermal imaging cameras at the Transpole bus depot in Wattrelos and about thermal imaging cameras for fire warning applications in general can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: ZARM cryogenic fuel research

Abstract:Fuel is a crucial part of space technology, it is necessary to propel the spacecraft but adding more fuel makes the spacecraft heavier and therefore less economic in its propulsion. Spacecraft designers continually face this dilemma. One of the best solutions current technology has to offer is the use of cryogenic fuel, due to its excellent energy to mass ratio. But the volatile character of cryogenic fuels and the absence of gravity in deep space make the use of cryogenic liquids for on-orbit propulsion challenging. But researchers at the German research facility ZARM may have found a solution to this problem by using a FLIR thermal imaging camera to determine the wicking properties of cryogenic fuels.

Application story: Erasmus small nerve fiber dysfunction research

Abstract: It is estimated that about 2% of the world population suffers from small nerve fiber dysfunction, which can result in neuropathic pain; diabetic patients represent a large portion of this population. While the dysfunction of large nerve fibers can be assessed using standard neurological examination and electromyography (EMG), currently no noninvasive techniques exist to detect and quantify small fiber dysfunction.

In research funded by the Dutch Technology Foundation STW, thermal imaging technology is used to develop an experimental setup that can detect this neuropathic phenomenon. To stimulate the development of new ways of employing thermal imaging cameras for medical purposes FLIR Systems has donated a high quality cooled FLIR SC5000 Series thermal imaging camera and the dedication of its experienced personnel to this research project.

Application story: Regional block research

Abstract: For many operations the use of regional anesthetics is preferred to general anesthetics, since it is considered to be safer for the patient. To determine the effectiveness of regional anesthetics the patient is subjected to pinpricks. If the patient indicates a pain sensation then the regional anesthetics is considered to be ineffective. Not only is the pinprick method subjective, it is also useless if the patient is unable to communicate. Furthermore it takes approximately 30 minutes before the pinprick method can be used to reliably determine the success of a local regional block. Researchers at the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, have found a new and objective tool to determine the effectiveness of the regional anesthetics: FLIR thermal imaging cameras.

Application story: E.ON Bayern 2

Abstract: Electricity is often taken for granted. In many countries power failures are a thing of the past due to thorough maintenance programs. To ensure continuous power supply regular inspections of the network’s components are really a must. FLIR thermal imaging cameras can play an important role in determining the state of operation of these components, so utility companies can more accurately maintain and repair their network. One of the first European utility companies that realized the potential of thermal imaging technology for the maintenance of their electricity network was E.ON Bayern. In E.ON’s maintenance program thermal imaging plays a pivotal role in ensuring that components are replaced in time, before any failures occur.

More information about the predictive maintenance program of E.ON and about the possibilities FLIR thermal imaging cameras have for industrial applications in general can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Raitech (FIAT)

Abstract: At the FIAT factory in Melfi, Italy, where several different FIAT models are being produced, inspections with FLIR thermal imaging cameras play an important part in the predictive maintenance program. The information obtained during the thermal imaging surveys are used to predict electrical and mechanical faults so they can be fixed before they become production halting breakdowns.

Given the fact that the FIAT factory in Melfi produces cars at the astounding rate of 250,000 per year it is crucial that the system keeps running all the time. To achieve that goal FIAT needs to ensure that every electrical or mechanical fault is spotted and repaired before it becomes a production-disrupting failure. Detecting those faults in time is the task of RAITECH Industrial Technologies Srl., a company specialized in technical assistance for industrial machinery.

Application story: Artis Royal Dutch Zoo

Abstract: Zoo keepers all over the world are faced with the problem of determining whether an animal should be treated or anesthetized or not. Many zoo animals are very sensitive to emotional stress and to the physical side-effects of anesthetics, so in some cases veterinary treatment can do more harm than good. To help them with this the keepers of the Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, can call upon the help of veterinarian assistant Daphne Valk and her FLIR P620 thermal imaging camera.

“It can provide important information that helps the vet to determine whether treatment is necessary”, explains Valk. “This might not sound spectacular, but for keepers and veterinarians this is extremely important. You want to avoid treatment and handling unless it is really necessary, but in some situations waiting can be fatal. A thermal imaging camera can help determine whether treatment is necessary. And the great thing about thermal imaging technology is that it a non-invasive method, so the stress level of the animal is kept to a minimum.”

Application story: Vopak pipework insulation inspections

Abstract: When transporting high volumes of hot gaseous or liquid chemicals through a network of pipes the quality of the pipework insulation is of vital importance for the system to work optimally. Both for financial and for environmental reasons heat leakage needs to be avoided at all costs. Inspections with FLIR thermal imaging cameras can help detect heat leakage so imperfect insulation can be repaired and the process can be optimized.

One of the companies that realized the importance of pipework inspections with FLIR thermal imaging cameras is Royal Vopak, the world’s largest provider of storage facilities for bulk liquids. At the Vopak storage facility in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands, steam is transported at 170° C through a network of pipes with a total length of over 1 kilometer. To determine the exact amount of energy loss during that transportation process Vopak hired the Dutch thermographic consultancy agency Thermografisch Adviesbureau Uden BV to do a thorough survey of the pipework insulation.

More information about the pipework insulation inspections at Vopak and about the possibilities FLIR thermal imaging cameras have for pipework inspections in general can be found in the attached application story.

Application story: Warehouse fire prevention

Abstract: Warehouses all over the world are stocked with highly valuable goods. Protecting these goods against theft is of the utmost importance. But theft is not the only danger. An even greater danger is fire. Fire can destruct an entire warehouse within an extremely short timeframe. The value of the destroyed goods during a fire can be tremendous and the cost of a life that is lost during a fire is impossible to calculate. Statistics show a high yearly increase in assets loss due to fire even though most warehouses are equipped with fire alarms and other firefighting systems. FLIR thermal imaging cameras can help. By detecting a rise in heat before a fire actually breaks out a thermal imaging based warning system can detect imminent fires in an extremely early stage. If the temperatures measured with the thermal imaging camera rise above a previously set threshold an alarm goes off. When an alarm occurs, personnel can go to the nearest monitor to verify the problem and its exact location on the real time thermal imaging video. This system can be used to save hundreds of thousands of euros in content and structural damage.

Application story: Thermografisch & Adviesbureau

Abstract: To keep the weight down to a minimum, most modern aircrafts are made from honeycomb composite materials, because they need to be both strong and lightweight. But under the extreme pressure changes that aircrafts are subjected to water can enter the honeycomb structure. At high altitudes the low temperature freezes the water. The expanding ice causes damage to the composite material that can have fatal results. To check whether a plains composite materials have been subjected to water ingress the Dutch company ‘Thermografisch & Adviesbureau Uden BV' uses a FLIR P660 thermal imaging camera to perform routine periodic water ingress inspections. Although most passengers do not realize it, these inspections with the FLIR P660 ensure that their flight arrives safely at their destination.
Application story: European Space Agency

Abstract: Industries such as pharmaceuticals and electronics demand very pure crystals, and it had been thought that irregularities in crystal formation would be reduced if the crystals were grown under zero gravity conditions. As part of the European Space Agency program, a FLIR ThermaCAM SC3000 was used as part of an instrument package designed to observe thermo-capillary phenomena at free liquid–gas interfaces. While the experiments showed that irregularities in crystal formation still occurred, the highly detailed information provided by the FLIR infrared camera provided an explanation for the phenomenon, and this has led to a revolution in research.

Abstract: The British Airports Authority (BAA) owns the world's busiest commercial airport, Heathrow. As a result of the British Government's commitment to the Kyoto protocol, all companies in the UK must reduce their energy use. To this end, FLIR ThermaCAM P-series and E-series infrared cameras are being used at Heathrow to, for example, locate badly insulated areas in buildings, hot spots in electrical systems, and leaks in heating systems. Not only are these measures enabling Heathrow to reduce its energy consumption and costs but disruption to services is reduced by locating problems before systems break down, and future buildings and systems can be designed to be more energy efficient.

Abstract: A world leader in the production of tires, Bridgestone Firestone is constantly seeking ways to develop new and better products and to reduce outages at its production units. During the first 6 months of using a FLIR ThermaCAM PM695 infrared camera for electrical and mechanical inspections at one production facility, two critical problems were detected that would have led to a shutdown for several hours—these occasions alone have covered the cost of the camera. In R&D, a FLIR ThermaCAM SC3000 camera is being used in tests to determine the behavior of tires under various operating conditions, and provides valuable information that is difficult or impossible to obtain using other technologies.
Abstract: The 2003 Columbia space shuttle catastrophe prompted NASA to find ways to increase the safety of its missions. One reason for the catastrophe was damage to the heat insulation on the wing leading-edge. An adapted FLIR ThermaCAM S65 infrared camera was used on a shuttle mission to check for damage to the wing leading-edge that cannot be seen on visual inspection alone. The FLIR camera will be transferred to the International Space Station (ISS), for use in regular inspections of instruments and systems, and for leak detection. A second camera system will be used on a future mission and then transferred to the ISS.

Application story: Intel Malaysia

Abstract: Intel Malaysia is a high-volume producer of microprocessor computer chips. The sophisticated assembly and testing process has a low tolerance to facility power supply interruptions, and breaks in the continuous production process are extremely costly to the company. The company introduced a predictive maintenance program to reduce premature equipment replacement and unpredictable repairs. As one of four key elements of this program, FLIR-trained thermographers use a FLIR ThermaCAM P65 infrared camera to inspect all electrical systems. In its first three years the new maintenance regime saved Intel hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Abstract: Monitoring the condition of rigs using thermal imaging is standard procedure for the European and African (EAU) operation of Transocean Inc., with each of its rigs having a FLIR Systems ThermaCAM P65 camera. Since the merger of Transocean with GlobalSantaFe (GSF) Corporation, this technology is being rolled out in order to integrate the monitoring strategies of the two companies. The scope of infrared inspections is being extended to include more mechanical applications in addition to electrical inspections. As thermal imaging is a non-contact method it can be used without powering down, thus maximizing up-time, and the success of the EAU operation has led to the Asia Pacific operation adopting FLIR thermal imaging.

Application story: Testing solar panels

Abstract: The failure-free operation of solar panels is a prerequisite for efficient power generation, long life, and a high return on the investment. A fast, simple, and reliable method for evaluating the performance of panels is thus required—both during the production process and after panel installation. Thermal imaging is the answer. Infrared cameras can be used to scan installed solar panels during normal operation, and any anomalies are clearly seen on a crisp thermal image. In addition, large areas can be scanned within a short time frame, and, as the cameras are handheld and lightweight, they are easy to use.

Abstract: Medite Europe manufactures an extensive range of construction materials. Key to operational efficiency are regular infrared surveys to spot and repair any electrical or mechanical faults before they become a production-disrupting failure. Medite's uses a FLIR T425 infrared camera incorporating the Meterlink feature, which embeds data from meters into the infrared images—this eliminates the need to make manual notes, and thus the possibility of confusing data from individual faults, or mixing up data from different clients. In combination with FLIR Reporter 8.5 software, this brings greater accuracy and intelligence to the infrared inspection.

Application story: Bavarian genetics

Abstract: Infrared thermography is becoming an established tool in veterinary medicine. Small relative differences in surface temperature can be used to identify animals that require further clinical evaluation and to follow the progress of any treatment. In a study of Fleckvieh bulls, observations made using a FLIR ThermaCAM P65 infrared camera identified hoof problems in 100% of cases. As the inspection is contactless, the procedure is stress free for the animal and safe for the operator. These breeding animals are valuable, as is the trade in the semen from the best of them. Thus, early treatment of problems can reduce economic losses.

Application story: Health issues with small animals

Abstract: Thermal imaging cameras have been used for some time to locate injury in horses in the equestrian sports, and now a study at the University of Helsinki has shown that they can also be used to discern health problems in small animals. The FLIR T425 thermal imaging camera is perfect for this, as it can detect the small anomalies in the thermal pattern seen in small animals, and the tiltable lens allows thermal images to be taken from any angle. To date, the camera has been used in dogs and cats, with a particular focus on diagnosing pain, which animals try to hide and thus often goes unnoticed and untreated.
Abstract: Viruses adapt continually and can be highly contagious, and the growth in international travel and migration means that an effective international viral disease prevention policy is essential. A reliable indicator of most human viral infections is elevated human body temperature, which can be instantly identified on a thermal image. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) in Taiwan has found that the use of FLIR Systems infrared cameras to scan travelers passing through its main airports has increased significantly the identification of people with communicable diseases. The frequency of automatic recalibration, ease of use, and visual and audible alarms on the FLIR cameras makes them ideal for use in this scenario.

Application story: Veterinary

Abstract: Horses used in equestrian sports such as horse racing and show-jumping are valuable animals, and are as prone to injury as any athlete. Thermal imaging is an excellent tool for spotting an injury before there are any visible signs, and thus preventing further damage. The horse specialist Equitherm finds the FLIR B335 thermal camera ideal for this purpose. Not only does the camera provide the necessary high resolution but the camera can be twisted and turned relative to the viewfinder to examine all areas of a horse. In addition, the camera is light weight and compact, which is important if the operator needs to move away from an animal quickly.

Application story: Swine flu

Abstract: Viral and bacterial infections that spread through human contact and airborne transmission pose a serious health problem, and the growth of international travel raises the possibility of pandemics. A reliable indicator of infection is raised body temperature, and FLIR A320 and T360 infrared cameras are a cost-effective means of screening large numbers of people. The color image, temperature scale, and alarm features make it quick and easy to decide whether a person needs medical examination, and the cameras can be operated by nonspecialists after just a few hours of training. Major airports are already using FLIR cameras to screen passengers entering and leaving the country.

Application story: Multites

Abstract: All over the world, building issues lead to court cases, and the greatest challenge in finding out the truth is to obtain solid facts. In Vicenza, Italy, Multites Srl was hired by the court to provide accurate information on moisture ingress and mold formation in a new apartment complex. Inspection with a FLIR B335 thermal imaging camera, which has interchangeable lenses and is designed especially for the building industry, revealed that these problems arose from thermal bridges due to defects in the construction. The court thus found in favor of the inhabitants, and the building contractor was ordered to make reparations.
Abstract: The earthquake that occurred in Abruzzo, Italy, in 2009 killed hundreds of people and destroyed many buildings. Before important historic buildings could be restored, their structural integrity had to be checked, and infrared imaging proved invaluable in this regard. For example, the Santa Lucia abbey was surveyed to evaluate the structural condition of its walls and of an important fresco it contains. Using a FLIR Systems infrared camera, the entire structure was inspected, and the hundreds of images obtained analysed in 6 hours, the results being used to decide on the best emergency intervention to save the monument.

Application story: Waste bunkers

Abstract: In the densely populated western European countries, household solid waste is produced in huge quantities and usually disposed of in incineration plants. Before incineration, waste is stored in bunkers containing thousands of metric tons. This waste can potentially self-combust, and fire prevention and detection are important issues, as the consequences of a fie could be catastrophic. m.u.t. GmbH has installed more than 40 infrared-camera-based early-fire detection systems in waste bunkers across Europe. It uses FLIR ThermoVision A40-M cameras in all these systems. This camera has excellent thermal sensitivity and a spectral range that enables it to provide images through smoke and dust.
Abstract: Fire can destroy an entire warehouse extremely quickly, and the value of the goods destroyed can be enormous, while the cost of a life lost is incalculable. By detecting hot spots and generating an alarm when a predefined temperature is exceeded, FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras can pick up a fire at an early stage and potentially prevent expensive stock loss. The camera images can be viewed remotely in real time, and tell a viewer the precise temperature and location of the hot spots. This information can be used to guide firefighters to the source of the fire and to find people in a smoke-filled room.

Application story: Roadscanners

Abstract: Finland has 78 141 km of highways, paved roads, and gravel roads. Monitoring and maintaining these roads can be challenging in a country where winter temperatures can drop to –40°C and days become so short that the sun does not clear the horizon in some areas. Finnish road inspectors are thus always on the lookout for new testing technologies to make their job easier and more effective. That is exactly what Roadscanners has done: the company has developed an efficient and nondestructive road diagnostics system in which FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras provide data of vital importance.

Application story: Flare monitoring

Abstract: Flare stacks are used in many industries to burn off unwanted waste gas by-products, or flammable gases released by pressure relief valves during unplanned over-pressuring of plant equipment. Regulations often require the monitoring of a stack's flame or pilot flame, to avoid unburned hydrocarbons entering the atmosphere. FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras are an ideal monitoring tool, since they allow automated remote monitoring on a 24/7 basis in virtually any weather. In addition, they avoid many of the technical and cost-related problems of other technologies.

Application story: Train braking

Abstract: A TGV train traveling at 300 km/h must make an emergency stop within the mandatory 3500 m: each brake disk has to dissipate a staggering 14 MJ of energy within just 80 s. In order for the train to decelerate safely and effectively, it is important that the brake disk manages this heat load efficiently. The high-speed FLIR SC5000 infrared camera was used to image hot spots that could lead to damage and early failure in an investigation into the performance of different brake pad materials and brake designs.

Application story: Superframing

Abstract: A good thermal image has high contrast while displaying the smallest temperature differences. Thermal imaging cameras can only do this within a defined temperature range. If the scene being imaged contains temperatures outside this range, the hottest areas will be saturated, and the coldest areas will appear black or noisy, resulting in loss of detail and invalid temperature measurements. These problems are solved by FLIR Superframing—a technique that extends the effective brightness of a scene while maintaining its thermal contrast.

Application story: Near-infrared (NIR) cameras

Abstract: Near-infrared (NIR) thermal imaging cameras are increasingly found in research laboratories, design departments, and on factory production lines. Not only can NIR cameras be used to view phenomena that cannot be observed with cameras that are sensitive to mid- or long-wavelength infrared, they also require no cryogenic cooling, which makes them lighter, smaller, and less expensive than cameras with cryogenic cooling. The possible applications for NIR cameras is vast, from nondestructive investigation of artworks to quality control in the pharmaceutical and agri-food industries.

Application story: Champagne

Abstract: Researchers at the University of Reims have discovered that the way champagne is usually poured causes loss of aroma and taste. They claim that champagne should be served like beer: poured into a glass held at an angle so that the champagne flows down the wall—not poured vertically, to hit the bottom of the glass directly. This finding was made using the FLIR SC7000 thermal imaging camera to visualize how carbon dioxide escapes from champagne during pouring.

Application story: Carbon bike

Abstract: Modern bike frames made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics are exceptionally light and strong. But the way these frames behave in failure is fundamentally different from the old metal frames. Instead of bending, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics break, exposing riders to danger: failure can lead to injury or even death. Carl Messtechnik uses FLIR Systems thermal imaging cameras to detect defects in carbon-fiber-reinforced materials before such life-threatening accidents happen.

Abstract: Sulfur hexafluoride is a gas used as an insulator in high-voltage switches. It is also a greenhouse gas—24 000 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide. Finding and repairing leaks is therefore very important to help reduce global warming. Vattenfall, Europe's fifth largest generator of electricity and its largest generator of heat, uses the FLIR GasFindIR infrared camera to detect leaks of this gas. Not only is the camera faster, easier to use, and more efficient than the gas sniffers used previously but electricity-generating plants no longer need to be shut down during investigation—saving a great deal of money.

Application story: HF-Series

Abstract: Firefighters need to see clearly to assess the effectiveness of ongoing firefighting activities and to direct the extinguishing activity. Vision is hampered in low light and, especially, smoky environments. But firefighters equipped with affordable and rugged FLIR HF-Series handheld thermal imaging cameras can see in darkness and through smoke, allowing them to find their way around and to spot parts of a fire that are still hot and must be extinguished to prevent spontaneous recombustion.
