Flixya Migrates to Amazon Web Services

Due to ongoing performance issues and to increase scalability Flixya.com has migrated to Amazon Web Services.

We are using Amazon S3 for hosting images, which saves us drive space and storage. We are also using Amazon EC2, with an extra large instance. A perfect solution to enable extended memory.

We are also using EBS for the database, which allows for quick snapshots, which is great for back ups. In addition, we have an EBS volume that is being used for cached data.

The entire Flixya platform is now hosted on Amazon Web Services.

We've seen a recent cross-over from ucash.in (another service created by our team) to Flixya, from visitors from Brazil. Currently, ucash.in is ranked a top 39 website in the country of Brazil, which is a welcome surprise as we see Brazil as an emerging market.

Recently, we have been told by quite a few sources, that Flixya.com is recognized as the number one site for revenue share. Curious to find out how we rank on Google? Type the words Revenue Share into Google search. Flixya is the second result, below Wikipedia and above the Google Adsense API result.

It is also interesting to note that currently, our membership is over 50,000 members and all through word-of-mouth advertising.

Interview with Ivan Wong, Flixya Co-Founder

Ivan Wong: USC Electrical Engineering Student, Web Entrepreneur and Innovator

Ivan Wong is a masters student in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California. He has passion in multimedia and Internet technologies. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego with a BS in Electrical Engineering, Ivan worked on multi-level flash memory and on the side co-produced an action sports television show. Having created several sites previously, Ivan worked on creating an online action sports portal to expand the reach of the show.

"Although the site did not take off as expected, it made me open my eyes to the many aspects that are required to make a website successful," Ivan explains. Spending his nights reading webmaster forums and blogs, Ivan slowly learned the dynamics behind popular websites and built several more prototypes. In July 2006, Flixya.com was launched and gained traction quickly with a world wide audience.

In 2007, Ivan and his partners founded Hybrid Media Labs. The company has developed a network of innovative media driven websites and established strategic partnerships with companies such as Google and Amazon.

Hybrid Media Labs created Flixya.com, a social network website which distributes ad revenues to site participants. Read below for more information about this project.

Help us understand what you are up to:
I have been developing website properties that enable the consumption, distribution and monetization of digital media. The parent company which I co-founded is Hybrid Media Labs.

What drives you to continue pursuing this area of study?
My motivation comes from the satisfaction of creating highly trafficked websites that serve a niche market.

Describe how your work might impact people’s lives, now and in the future.
Flixya.com is a social network that pays its users ad revenue (100% ad revenue passed to the contributing member) to share media. We have created a profitable and unconventional business model, and a tool for Internet users to monetize their media. We also have a collection of other sites which offer online tools and services which are built around different business models.

How did you come up with the idea?
We created several prototypes in the video sharing space and later felt there was a niche in the revenue sharing arena. After a month of rapid development, we launched Flixya version 1 which incorporated ideas of our initial prototypes with a revenue sharing model.

Has anyone ever doubted that your idea could work?
Definitely, ideas after all are a dime a dozen. However, after many past failures it’s become more apparent on which ones will succeed. Every doubter becomes a motivator as I enjoy defying odds.

What is the next step in the innovation process for you (and how might people help)?
Everyday is part of the innovation process and it repeats with the launch of each new project. The innovation process for me usually involves brainstorming, market research, feasibility studies, site architecture planning, design UI, project specifications, marketing analysis, SEO, etc. Those are just a few steps that all occur during the innovation process for these web properties. Living and breathing in the so-called ‘trenches’ has been an interesting and rewarding experience.

What mistake taught you the most?
I don’t treat mistakes as ‘mistakes’, but rather experiences that help shape me into a better innovator and entrepreneur.

What is the one innovation you can’t live without?
The Internet.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
On the side, I am a photographer and enjoy video production. I am also a downhill mountain biker and enjoy extreme sports.

What do you wish you would have invented?
The Zip-tie – simple, but high impact ideas.

Any tips for aspiring innovators?
‘Just do it’ – be aware that risk and failure are always inherent, but don’t have that stop you.

Flixya Participates in USC Innovator Showcase

Congratulations to Flixya Co-founder, COO and USC graduate student, Ivan Wong, who was selected to participate in USC's first student innovator showcase held on October 11th, 2007, presented by the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation.

The Student Innovator Showcase and Competition attracted nearly 60 teams of students, from all corners of the university and in total, more than 200 students applied to participate in the competition and showcase. Flixya was one of 40 exhibits presented at the showcase this year.

Flixya Tours Shake-A-Leg Miami, South Florida's "Gateway to Biscayne Bay".

We just returned from a business trip and along the way, we met a group of remarkable people. While we were in South Florida, we were generously given a tour of Shake A Leg Miami, a great organization (from their website) "that helps children and adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges; liberating them from the realm of imagination into the realm of experience." We also enjoyed the boat ride on the bay as well, where we stopped and saw Eco Island.

We met Harry Horgan, CEO and Co-founder who was paralyzed as a young man, and is now helping disabled kids feel the freedom of the sea. Recently featured in People Magazine "Heroes Among Us". An active sailor, Harry Horgan 49, paralyzed from the chest down weeks after graduating from college in 1980, wanted to help others feel good about themselves.

Today, through his nonprofit Shake-A-Leg Miami, Horgan and the 24 person staff and additional 250 volunteers teach over 3,000 physically and mentally disabled kids and adults each year. The programs are free for special-needs and low-income participants and range from sailing and kayaking (on handicapped-accessible vessels) to marine science classes.

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Harry, photographer and author, Susie J. Horgan and their son Eli, Ashley Sullivan, Director of Education and Vocation, Jared Bistrong, Multimedia Manager, Meredith Bass, Director of Water Sports, Betsy Cox who oversees Grants and Development, Tracy Towle, Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications and all the great kids who were attending the last day of summer camp!

We should have some photos soon, but please check out this great organization. We were honored to have such a great experience and meet people with such dedication.

Everyday, the Shake A Leg organization empowers and improves the lives of literally thousands of people.

Just a quick note about the new site. We will be sending out a newsletter to all our members to answer questions and offer more information regarding any changes to the Flixya site.

Also, the firefox publisher extension for posting videos is being reformatted and currently does not work. The new embed method no longer requires you to upload a thumbnail and is very quick. Of course it's not as fast as the publisher tool and we are working on fixing that.

We are adding questions with answers to our Help Center (Click on Help at the top.) and if you have a question -- feel free to use the help center as the information is then made available for all members.

One other item -- the popular blogs section is displaying the most recent blogs and not the most popular blogs. This is temporary.

Questions regarding the point system and any technical issues are being handled on a case by case basis and we will have an update for everyone who has contacted us by the end of business day.

Some of you may be able to see the new Flixya site. In addition to videos, we have added photos and blogs. We built the site from the ground up, so there are a lot of new features and some changes. The best news is that you now earn 100% ad revenue! You can also set up a profile and share all your videos and photos on one page.

We have started to migrate all the data from Flixya V1 to Flixya V2. If you are an existing member, you should be able to log in with your existing username and password. The migration of all member and password information should be completed by Tuesday, June 19th.

If you have a Google publisher id, you can add this to your existing account by logging in and clicking on "My Account", then "Revenue Settings" and select yes and follow the prompts. If you run into any errors, please contact us at contact@flixya.com.

If you notice something out of place, it might be temporary, but we hope to have any rough spots ironed out over the next few days!

There should not be much (if any) downtime. Thanks for your patience in advance and we look forward to seeing you online!

Release Date Set for Flixya V2

We made a lot of progress this past week and we hope to continue on track
to deliver the latest version of Flixya. We are in the final stages of development
and will be migrating the development site to the live server.

We've set out to offer a platform that changes the way people think about social networking. With the success of Myspace, Facebook and other social network sites, one element was missing from the formula. The truth is that these sites generate an increasingly large sum of money for the companies that have built the products.

Our approach is to offer similar features for our members and in addition, enable the users of our site to monetize their content.

We haven't re-invented the wheel and we know that to reach that amount of traffic and visibility is not something that happens over night.

The first version of Flixya was a prototype and a strong proof of concept. After looking at how the space has evolved and talking to our members and other video sharing communities, we felt that we could make significant improvements.

With additional features including photos and blogs, the new platform pays members 100% ad revenue.

We are excited to have the tools to enable our members to do more -- beyond video sharing.

In short, Flixya V2 is a social network that puts money in your pocket.

We will be testing out a new video ad system. Over the next week, You may notice some strategically placed thumbnails on the site. We will be testing two types of video ads.

Flixya is a work in progress and sometimes we add something and immediately remove it after a brief testing phase.

Also, we want to clarify what we see as adult related content. The system will flag your account when adult keywords are submitted OR if a video contains adult content, such as web cams, adult situations, blatant sexual references, etc.

We do our best to remove inappropriate content, but please use your best judgment when submitting videos.

Better Google Ads and Faster Site

Hey guys,

We wanted to let you know we are still working on the site optimization, so we apologize for any issues. As for the good news, we have started to optimize the page structure for better and more relevant Google Adsense ads. One way to improve the ad quality is to use relevant words and keywords both in the title, tags, description. On a side note if you are using the Flixya Publisher, please remember to make sure the tags are appropriately spaced if needed as sometimes a comma could be in the way. Thats it for now.

Thanks for being a part of Flixya Video Sharing. We have recently experienced some downtime during our database and site improvements and appreciate the continued support.

Our user base has grown considerably over the past month and we wanted to express our many thanks. So far we have given away numerous prizes (Apple Ipod Nanos seem to be the most popular so far) and plan to make some revisions to the rewards program. The number one request? An Apple Iphone! PS. Just a heads up the video view counts have been cached to reduce overhead, so most of the figures are currently inaccurate. However, this will not affect your Google Adsense impressions.

Create Up to Date Viral Videos, Leverage the News

When ANY big news even breaks...people will be searching for those videos. So keep your eyes open on the latest new events happening and create videos based on them. Its really as simple as that. Flixya offers an easy to use webcam publisher so you could easily create a video blog on that subject or create your own from scratch.

You can use free software from http://www.camstudio.org/ or http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp to create videos from still images, just add pics and audio. compile it to an .avi or .wmv and upload it to video.google.com and youtube.com Making sure you choose the Title of your video correctly.

Use a title that you know people will be looking for. If your not entirely sure, you can upload it twice or three times choosing different titles each time you submit it.

note: name your video file the same as the title for best results. e.g awesoem-video-title.avi

When submitting your videos to YT and VG make sure not to forget to put your Flixya referral link in there, so the traffic from VG and YT will bring you new referrals and make you more money from advertising, and also remember to submit the video back onto Flixya =P
