R.I.P. Ryan - Ryan Dunn, you were the man

A symbol of cool, Ryan has left us today.

Dunn was born in Medina, Ohio, and grew up in Williamsville, New York, before moving to West Chester, Pennsylvania where he met Bam Margera on his first day of high school.
Margera, Christopher Raab (known as Raab Himself) and Brandon DiCamillo, had started making videos that featured them skateboarding and performing stunts under the moniker CKY for 'Camp Kill Yourself'. He was working as a welder and part-time at a gas station when Johnny Knoxville, a friend of Bam Margera through the skateboarding circuit, asked to use their videos, which became an instant hit.

On June 20, 2011, at approximately 3:30 a.m. EDT, Dunn died in a car crash on the West Chester Bypass (US 322) within West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania, when his 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 slid off the road, hit a tree, and burst into flames. Reports from TMZ state that he posted a photo of himself drinking with friends a few hours before onto Twitter. Police said that Dunn was probably speeding at over 100 mph at the time of the accident. An unidentified occupant of the vehicle was also found dead at the scene. WKST-FM reported that both men had suffered severe burns; Dunn was reportedly identified by his tattoos and facial hair.

After creating three albums of dirty and danceable garage rock anthems, Hollywood’s favorite son and Eagles of Death Metal frontman, Jesse "The Devil" Hughes, is unveiling his solo debut as Boots Electric. Titled Honkey Kong, the album will be released on September 20th by Dangerbird Records.

It was produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Depeche Mode, The Kooks) and co-written with legendary keyboardist Money Mark, best known for his many collaborations with the Beastie Boys.

Despite being a land where criminals used to be deported to, Australia has not much to offer regarding serial killers. Ivan Millat, known as "The Backpackers Killer" was arrested on the 22nd May 1994 after stabbing and shooting seven victims to death. All backpackers and aged between 19 and 22. He was until then the most notorious serial killer Down Under. In 1999, John Bunting was found guilty of the murders of eleven victims, under the name of "The Snowtown Murders". Based on this true series of events, the attempt from first-time feature director Justin Kurzel to retrace "The Snowtown Murders" does not quite convincingly build an emotional rapport with its audience.

Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) is a sixteen-year old kid living with his mum, Elizabeth (Louise Harris), and his two younger brothers - Alex and Nicholas - in a housing trust home in Adelaide's northern suburbs. The family is surrounded by violence and hopelessness. After a neighbour sexually abuses the boys, Elizabeth has got no choice but to ask her new boyfriend, John Bunting (Daniel Henshall) to protect her family. John, who soon appears to be a homophobic psychopath, with a serious anger towards paedophiles, is at first bringing stability to this chaotic family. John is a protector. He is the male structure that the boys needed but as the months pass, John will indoctrinate Jamie into his world, a world of malice and crime and will move from the protector to the mentor. He will soon introduce the teenager to firearms by asking him to shoot his own dog. Not long after, Jamie will become more and more involved with the murders under the instruction of Bunting.

In 1999, John Bunting, Robert Wagner, Mark Haydon and James (Jamie) Vlassakis will be arrested and charged with the murders of eleven people with the remains of eight victims founded in barrels of acid located in a rented former bank building in Snowtown, 145 km north of Adelaide.

With such a spooky and ugly story combined with an independent low-budget cinematographic picture, "Snowtown" had all the elements to be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the movie settles into a very low-pace "arty" wannabe and does not succeed to convince.

Visually, it is very pleasant. The work on the frames guides you through the 119th minutes quite easily despite a dragging slow rhythm that is wrongly justified by director, Justin Kurzel alongside its detachment as a "banal brutality". Most of the shots are audiovisual paintings of the beautiful South Australian countryside. The visual structure is perfect and is strongly reinforced by a soundtrack which while being over-used in the triller-movie genre is nevertheless efficient.
Due to this focus on creating some kind of "arty" and strongly proud independent movie, the length of the shots strongly affects some space for some key points of the story. Many characters come and go and die without giving the spectator any chance to get attached to them or even just to know who they are. And regarding the acting it is obvious that Kurzel, by using non-actors, tried to create something a bit more real but has again failed. It is in fact pretty painful to see the main character, who is in fact Jamie more than John, dragging this "slap face" all along the 119 minutes. On the positive side, the performance from Daniel Henshall is spotless. Very credible in his character, he embodies the perfect image of a serial killer ; calm, in control of his thoughts and his actions and with a malicious and disturbing smile that makes him almost likable for the spectator.

To conclude, despite a visually well achieved first-time feature, "Snowtown" is not as convincing as it could be due to its high aspiration to be an "arty" movie. Awarded by the outdated Cannes Film festival - where anything that is not from Hollywood is a masterpiece - "Snowtown" will be easily and happily forgotten compare to "The Snowtown Murders", painful and horrible memory for thousands of people.

The winter has settled down in Melbourne. Due to the geographic position - the capital of Victoria is in a bay - the cold wind, straight for the Antarctic, spins around in the streets like a mad and angry blizzard and brings a general low energy atmosphere to the population. Well, not to everyone, because tonight The Hidden Venture are playing at The Espy in Saint Kilda, their last gig for a couple of months as their frontman, Dan Fox, is going away to Europe to perform with Ronit, including a show at Glastonbury festival in the U.K. And for a farewell show, The Hidden Venture once again did not disappoint their audience.

Armed with a lot of new materials, the quator were strong and solid. The power that emanates from the songs takes everyone on a real journey to rock'n'roll. Dale Brimblecombe's amazing melodic guitar sounds allied to Dan Fox' vocals put you in a bubble, in their bubble and with the mistake-less and solid drums and bass from Ben Thomas and Alex Hayes respectively, they made sure that you would not want to get out of it.

Let me tell you, these new songs are killer tracks. Each of them offers something completely different, something that you think you have heard before but then realise that it is definitely The Hidden Venture that you are watching. These guys are made of so many influences from Queens of the Stone Age to Pink Floyd but turn it into their own and make it natural to create tune after tune, potential single after potential single, your favourite song after your favourite song.

Joshua Tree and the West American desert have been made famous by bands like Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Brant Bjork and many more from the Stoner scene. Well, in Australia, there are deserts too but in fact, it is in Melbourne, in the deep concrete of the capital of Victoria, where we can find The Hidden Venture.

Influenced by Joshua Homme, Jimmy Hendrix or even Jeff Buckley, the Melbournian 4-piece develops and offers a strong and powerful Stoner Rock, made in Australia. Dan Fox (Vocals/ Guitar), Alex Hayes (Bass/ Vocals), Dale Brimblecombe (Guitar) and Ben Thomas (Drums) make sure that your all body will be sweaty, that you bend your head down and that you wish you had long hair to be able to make it go with the rhythm flow.

The music of The Hidden Venture is a combination of up and down tempos, playing a lot with the half-beats and in a perfect synergy between bass and drums and creating a heavy power that sticks you to the ground. You barely can get used to a tempo before it jumps to an other one. In the meantime, both guitars and vocals work as the bright side of the musical creation with a touch of psychedelia. Dan Fox' vocals go from a Joshua Homme sound-alike to a Thom Yorke high harmonies sound-alike.

With no pretension despite being made of so many influences, The Hidden Venture manage to create their own sound and their own personality. They bring some sort of Progressive Stoner Rock, complex and solid, to the front scene.

Stoner a day, Stoner forever!

Influenced by metal and classic 70's Rock music, the French band from Nantes, Jumping Jack are creating a dark, powerful and melodic Stoner Rock. Formed in 2009, Julian Bells (guitar/ vocals), Chris Dabrown (drums) and Manu Redhead (bass) quickly record a 6 songs EP "Cows and Whisky" in August the same year. This brought the attention to the promoters and Jumping Jack saw themselves playing with Parabellum, Black Bomb A, Tagada Jones, Squealer and Vulcain soon after that.

It is heavy, fat, dirty, angry and nasty but also melodically listenable and incredibly enjoyable. Jumping Jack is a perfect combination of lulls and fury and in a word, a true value to the new Stoner scene.

It all started in 1997, Joshua were on the merge of becoming one of the most popular post-punk band of the end of the decade. After recording a debut full length album with J. Robbins (Jawbox, the Promise Ring, Jets to Brazil, Texas Is the Reason) at legendary Inner Ear studios in Arlington, VA (Fugazi, Braid) and a debut EP for Doghouse Records that had sold over 5000 copies, Joshua saw themselves invited to support The Get Up Kids and At The Drive In that same year, followed by European and Japan tours.

In 2002, due to some difficulties to keep a consistent line-up, Joshua decided to split, leaving thousands of fans all around the world (including Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Say Anything and New Found Glory) with no word.

After few different musical projects, Sean Hansen (ex-The Ataris, Park Ranger), Keith Bogart (Park Ranger), Shane Chikeles (ex-The Ataris, Park Ranger) and Dan Coutant (who owns and operates Sun Room Audio - a stereo mixing and mastering studio) decided to get back together and to reform Joshua.

Towards the end of the year 2010, they are bringing "Choices", a nine songs LP recorded at Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore. Through "Choices", Joshua are trying, with no pretension to redefine themselves as a serious indie value and they do it well. With a strong balance between the powerful bass lines and drums with the melodic guitars and sweet vocals, Joshua are creating a lovely cozy and energetic atmosphere and with all these years spent apart, they are coming back stronger and with a mature sense of musical creation.

After the departure of Mick (guitar/ backing vocals), Fabrice (bass/ backing vocals) and DS - Luca (drums) for different musical projects, Giacomo Panarisi got on his side Hadri "The French" (guitar/ backing vocals), Luca "Highbloo" (drums) and Matth "Del Monte" (bass) to create the new album "Italian Stallions".

In a word, it is powerful, sexy, punk, makes your mama dance and your daddy pour a beer over his face and this is what Spaghetti Rock is about.

ALBUM - Die On Monday - "Black Cat"

Not many French artists are known outside the hexagon. Due to the use of the language of Molière, it is hard indeed to make a name for yourself in the UK or the US, in a word, to make a name for yourself worlwide.Well, some French bands deserved to be heard so get a glass of wine, a baguette and some cheese.

In 2007, Benjamin Rubin (ex guitarist of the French band AqME), wants to go back to his roots, wants to go back to the grunge, stoner rock and all that. With Guillaume Brouze (ex drummer of the French band Comity), Toni Rizzotti (singer of the French band Enhancer) and Vincent Mercier (bassist of the French band Vegastar) they form Die On Monday and in 2010, the first album "Black Cat", comes out.

"Black Cat" is a 10 songs album that makes us think that French rock music is not dead. The all album is sang in English. The specific and unique guitar sound of Benjamin that made AqME is omnipresent supported with a strong, clean and slappy bass and some heavy and solid drums. The vocals of Toni are miles away from his rap in Enhancer. The influences of Black Sabbath, Queens Of The Stone Age or Soundgarden are the base of this new grungy and stoner voice. And to complete the package, the mix of the album has been done by mister Steve Rooke (Paul Mc Cartney, The Cure...) at the mythic Abbey Road studios.

Even for a first album, this combination makes a lot of sense and brings a finally good decent French Stoner band to the front row of this musical genre so occupied by our fellow Americans.

FILM - Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Every comic books fans and/or video games addicts had their gifts from the movie industry. Lately, with the adaptations of Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, Tom Raider, Resident Evil etc, pretty much every horizon have been covered. Based on a series of graphic novels by Canadian writer/artist Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a never ending dream set in a video game and dressed with indie rock. More than a simple gift, it is a real present that Edgar Wright is offering us.

Scott Pilgrim is a 22 year-old teenager who plays bass in a band called Sex Bob-omb. Scott has just started dating a 17 year-old high school girl named Knives Chau, which does not satisfy his bandmates nor his gay flatmate, Wallace. It is time for Scott to grow up. In the meantime, Scott his having strange dream about a girl who shortly he meets at a party. She turns up at the door the next day as a delivery girl and Scott manages to get on a date with her, without breaking up with Knives which leads to an awkward situation at the band first gig when both Knives and Ramona (the dream girl) turn up. For a teenager like Scott, nothing can get worse than this..not until Matthew Patel, one of Ramona's exes, turns up and challenges Scott to a duel to death. Scott will then learn that Ramona has 7 evil exes who formed a league. Scott has to defeat them one by one if he wants to pretend dating her.

Edgar Wright adaptation of the graphic novels is hilarious, exhilarating and miles away from any adaptation made before. Scott Pilgrim vs the World is not the easiest story to adapt but in Edgar Wright's hands and his skills to set up comedy and rapid-fire editing, the movie gets a dynamic never seen before that save it from being a complete disaster. The spirit of comic book/ video game is all covered with the like of fast shooting sequences and Mortal Kombat style fights.

The soundtrack is simply brilliant. The songs are a pure Canadian fuzzy garage rock and even Beck or Franck Black bring their contribution to it. The soundtrack includes Black Lips, The Rolling Stones or T-Rex. On top of that, some Nintendo type of sounds are also added to this dirty rock.

In a word, Scott Pilgrim vs the World is simply brilliant. It is a movie that does not only conquer geeks and otaku but really everybody and the basic teenage love story does not really matter in the end considering the visual effects that are offered to your eyes and brain. The movie is like a video game that you haven't finished yet, so you turn on the console and play it over and over.

FILM - Shutter Island

After "Gangs Of New York", "The Aviator" and "The Departed", "Shutter Island" is the fourth collaboration between star Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. The main question is does their new movie measure up with the previous three?

Set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is investigating the escape of a patient Rachel Solando at the psychiatric hospital on Shutter Island with his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). Rachel seems to have disappeared through the walls and what was supposed to be a regular investigation turns to a much more complicated situation as the staff of the hospital appears very suspicious and mainly Dr John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the director of the building. Suddenly Rachel Solando is back. The reason of Rachel's imprisonment is that she has drowned all three of her children in the family pond and still shows no remorse for it. Marshal Daniels' headaches are turning into migraines and without his real consent he is forced to take the drugs offered by the hospital. Bad dreams and memories from World War II are becoming more and more regular and painful. Marshal Daniel is digging into the conspiracy to find out that brain surgery on the patients is taking place in the lighthouse of the island, where the accessibility is very restricted, and that he will not be able to leave the island.

The movie is all set on a very creepy low-lights atmosphere where Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule managed to see with an infinite supply of matches. The remains of World War II, the fear of North Korea and the H Bomb is omnipresent to complete to this shivery ambiance. Storm, rats, long howling corridors, all the ingredients for an unfriendly atmosphere are here, so much that the situation seems unreal.

The main real problem of the movie is that pretty much straight from the beginning, we understand the end and what is supposed to be the denouement becomes more of a joke and the two hours long movie is getting extremely long and sometimes quite suffering.

On top of that, the choice of music is extremely weird and doesn't always match. When Teddy and Chuck are arriving on the island, they are taken to the hospital on a Jeep. The music is going up and up in a very dramatic way and we expect something terrible to happen. Well, the gate of the hospital opens and the music stops. Very surprising and despite the professionalism of the team Scorsese, the film is filled with amateurism.

The highlight of the movie is Michelle Williams who is interpreting Leonardo DiCaprio's wife and offers a humble performance.

Finally, it could have been a great movie but the main keys to a good movie have been forgotten here. With the weak storyline, a fake tension and a Leonardo DiCaprio who looks like a baby more fragile than a strong confident U.S. Marshal like he's supposed to be, "Shutter Island" has failed to entertain.

MUSIC - Electric Mary

When in 2004 "Sail On", the first single from the Melbourne band Electric Mary comes out, as for many Australian bands, only the Land Down Under knows about it, but down there, Rusty Brown (vocals), Pete Robinson (guitars/vocals), former Southern Sons frontman Irwin Thomas (guitars/vocals),Venom (drums) and Alex Raunjak (bass/vocals) are making a name for themselves.

Later that year, "Four Hands High", the first album is released followed by "Down To The Bone" in 2008 that is released in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg but will be released in Australia, the US and the UK only in 2009. Electric Mary will mainly spend the next few years touring with bands like Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Glenn Hughes, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple.

Electric Mary is raw. It is classic Rock'n'Roll. The influences of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin are all over and there is no need to hide it. Rusty Brown is one of the best vocalist that the 21st Century has offered so far with an intense passion in his singing and strongly supported by heavy melodic guitars that make Electric Mary a band with a very solid structure of songs and a band that brings a freshness into classic rock. It gets under your skin, it gets right down to the bone.

ART - Mike Wrobel

Mike Wrobel, a French born graphic designer, now settled in Tokyo, brings the surrealism back to life with this touch of 21st Century. The malaise created is in the meantime reassuring and never frightening. The ambiance, the choice of characters, the lightening..despite the disturbing atmosphere, make you feel at home, in your own subconscious.

Salvador Dali once said "Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision." Mike Wrobel destroys and rebuilds any concept, any rules and takes you to a journey to your own mind.

FILM - Buried

A man in a pine box for 90 minutes. That's the very ambitious concept that Rodrigo Cortés and star Ryan Reynold offer here.

The movie opens in the dark. The sounds of a Zippo lighter can be heard. Light. We are in the box with Reynold and will be there for 90 minutes. The all movie is set up in there, we will not go out, will not meet other character. There is no flashback, memories or quick-cuts to a different location, we are in the box.

Paul Conroy is a US trucker contracted in Iraq who has been kidnapped and buried alive in a pine box. Alongside him, in the coffin, there is a lighter and a partially charged cell phone with low signal that makes us think that Paul is not buried too deep into the ground. Paul will try to contact various people asking for help from his wife, his employers, the FBI or his kidnappers. From these last ones, he will soon find out that the reason for his burial is a form of ransom. Paul has until 9pm to get $5m, which gives him only 90 minutes left, but also 90 minutes of oxygen. Paul will manage to connect with Dan Brenner (Robert Paterson), a Special Forces agent who deals with finding kidnapped Americans in Iraq. The situation is far from easy as we know the US policy of not paying ransom for hostages. Dan Brenner will guide Paul through "what to do" and "what not to do", like not responding to his kidnappers threats, while on their side of the phone they try to locate and get Paul out the box.

"Buried" is set up on this very strong concept, based on solid keys and credible situations. Paul is not buried too deep so has a signal on his phone but cannot force his way out. The phone has been cloned so can be tracked by GPS only. The battery of the cell phone is running down and will not be eternal.

In a very cleaver and successful way, Cortés manages to keep us inside the box with Paul Conroy without any repetitive moments. In this claustrophobic situation, the characters on the other side of the phone become real and not just voices. The performance of Ryan Reynold is just astonishing and he even manages to squeeze some funny moments, nervously funny, in this stressful set-up. The tension is prominent and being inside the box makes each scene becoming highly stressful.

With a big ambition came a big execution and thank to Ryan Reynold and Rodrigo Cortés for this wonderful conceptual performance that makes "Buried" one of the greatest film that 2010 has offered us so far.

MUSIC - Band Of Skulls

Having two lead singers and three songwriters in a band is always presenting anrange of unlimited possibilities. Russell Marsden (guitar & vocals), Emma Richardson (bass & vocals) & Matt Hayward (drums), first met at college and quickly established themselves in the music and art community with a series of culturally inspired club nights in Southampton, London, Moscow and Tokyo under the name Band Of Skulls (previously known as Fleeing New York).

Soon Band Of Skulls started working on their debut album, "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey". The album was recorded, mixed and mastered from January through to March 09 before contracts had time to be signed.

Their music came to the attention of iTunes staff and made such an impact they were selected for the iTunes Single of the Week campaign in April with the debut single 'I Know What I Am'. MUSIC - Am Lily Andorphin

When a poetic and fragile melodic voice meets the disconnected logic of sounds in alternative indie-rock, you have got Am Lily Andorphin.

At the end of the year 2007, Amandine Rouzeau aka Am Lily Andorphin, decides to put her musical project, until then preserved in her bedroom, onto the live stage. The early period of the project, helped by a bassist/ violinist and by a drummer, is really folk. Following this successful start, Am Lily Andorphin get on the road and play in France, Germany and Belgium with bands like All Smiles, Serafina Steer, Hugga Broomstick, CJ Boyd and Royal Chord.

The year 2009 sees a radical change in the evolution of the band. Richard Billon, former Balza and Nicolas Mayer, former 3 Guys Never In, join Amandine Rouzeau (vocals/ guitar/ piano) and Mathieu Goyal (bass/ violin). Sraight away, Am Lily Andorphin becomes heavier and cutting riffs make themselves clearly visible. The rhythm gets thicker and the naive and poetic vocal support contributes to this transformation. The folk meets the indie-rock.

When Interpol announced the departure of bassist and founding member Carlos Dengler, many people saw the end of the band. His unique look based on different fashions for each album appeared as a massive loss to numbers of fans. Add to that, the unsatisfying previous effort "Our Love To Admire" did not offer positive hopes regarding the evolution of the band. Luckily, Carlos Dengler is playing on this last LP (but has definitely left the band) and "Interpol" is, in fact, a very good album.

Interpol has always managed to create this enigmatic atmosphere with a strong lyrical content and some mesmerizing melodies close to dance music that somehow make you want to dance.

In "Interpol", Paul Blank's leadsinging and his range of vocal tones and feelings tells a story made of joy and happiness at the beginning but that is changing to a depressing, morose and sinister come down. The story starts with a man full of hopes, who is enjoying life but who gives up and once again, fells into his own world, where only his love is his. The force of "Interpol" is not only Paul Blank's genius but also the basic rock instrumental support in the first half of the album that, then progessively attends to explose until the end of the album. The musical desire of explosion and burn-out from the second half of "Interpol" settle an intoxication of feelings.

Interpol offer here a very dark poetic album close to the masterpiece of "Turn On The Bright Lights", making them a much more complex and mysterious band than what they were already.

MUSIC - Queens Of The Stone Age - "Rated R-Deluxe Edition"

It has been ten years since Joshua and his mantra "Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Extasy and Alchool" conquered the world. The first eponymous effort of Queens Of The Stone Age based on the remains of Kyuss, did not reach the success that it deserves but when Rated R was released in 2000, the all world was aware of who Queens Of The Stone Age were.

Rated R is made of a countless number of Homme's friends. The joining of ex-Kyuss Nick Oliveri brings a strong, powerful and mighty bass, creating the real backbone of the band. The guest appearances of Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) - who will then join the band as a full-time member - and Judas Priest frontman, Rob Halford, are contributing to a solid, mature and unusual Stoner Rock album. Rated R became only the first chapter of one of the greatest band of all time.

Ten years later, Rated R is still an album that you listen over and over with still the same passion and musical orgasm and to celebrate, Queens Of The Stone Age have released a Rated R - Deluxe Edition including a 5 B-Sides tracks (including a priceless goofy cover of the Kinks "Who'll Be The Next In Line"), "Monster In The Parasol" (live in Seattle) and a nine-song live set from the 2000 Reading festival.

Rated R is already an institution to what is defined as a great album, Queens Of The Stone Age, what is defined as a great band and this Deluxe Edition also shows how much fun playing music is and how much fun it is to do it with your friends. The "family spirit" creating by these range of characters is what the music industry is missing nowadays.

MUSIC - Fatso Jetson

In music, there are always some institutions. For the Stoner Rock, Fatso Jetson is one of them.

Formed in 1994, in Palm Desert by ex-Yawning Man members, Mario (Guitar/ Vocals) and his brother Larry Lalli (Bass), along with Tony Tornay (Drums), Fatso Jetson are often credited as the fathers of the Stoner Rock but what makes them unusual and original is that Fatso Jetson are incorporating some Surf Rock and Punk Rock influences to their a-la Black Sabbath heavy guitar riffs and therefore, creating a punky art rock of their own.

Their experimentation of many musical textures, instrumental epics and bizarre lyrics attracted Greg Ginn, the Black Flag bassist who decided to release Fatson Jetson's first album under his record label SST. The band then followed fellow friends Kyuss on a mini tour.

During their second album, the Mario, Larry and Tony hired ex-Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer Brant Bjork as a second guitar. Due to his commitment to Fu Manchu, Bjork had to leave and got replaced by guitarist, old friend and ex-Yawning Man, Gary Arce. He finally departed in 2000.

Since then, Fatso Jetson have kept a 4 piece line-up, adding Vince Meghrouni (Saxophone/ Harmonica) and have obviously contributed to the Desert Sessions alongside long time friend Joshua Homme.

FILM - Inception

Not many people are able to turn a blockbuster into a very artistic and interesting good movie, Christopher Nolan is one of them. Well known for "Memento" and his tricky storyline, Nolan managed to turn "Batman Begins" and mostly "The Dark Knight" into absolute masterpieces and that is the reason why "Inception" was well awaited.

With a strong cast, Leonardo DiCaprio (Dom Cobb), Joseph Gordon-Lewitt (Arthur), Ellen Page (Ariadne), Tom Hardy (Eames), Cillian Murphy (Robert Fisher Jr) and Marion Cotillard (Mal) and a plot more than exciting, all the keys for a new success were together. Well, it does not quite reach that.

Dom Cobb and his team are burglars of your mind and dreams. They steal valuable secrets from the deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is the most vulnerable. This new way of corporate espionage put Dom Cobb as an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Dom is offered one last job, one last chance to get his life back and be reunited with his children, but this time instead of stealing an idea they have to implant one, into the mind of Robert Fisher Jr.

It takes nearly fifty minutes for Nolan to set everything up but then all the scenes follow each other very quickly like in a mad twister. All the information and keys given in the first part of the movie do not fully connect or re-appear in the last part of the movie and the pretty complicated storyline make "Inception" a clumsy movie. The attention is to loose the spectator into the layers of dream as Dom Cobb and his team keep going into dreams inside the dream, but it is always fairly simple with a bit of concentration to know where you are.

Visually, it is absolutely beautiful. Breaking the rules of gravity and perspective has been a main target for Hollywood over the past few years ("Matrix" as the best example) but "Inception" does it perfectly and with class. Even if the action is set up in dreams, every single abnormal scene makes perfect sense and is credible.

The highest point of the movie is, and by far, the performance of Marion Cotillard who is scary and tender at the same time.

"Inception" is not a very entertaining movie due to the complexity of it. It seems to be a movie by Christopher Nolan to Christopher Nolan, but it is one of these movies that requires few viewings. It is definitely an unmissable film to watch. It is not the big wow we might have hoped for but it keeps faith in artistic blockbusters.

20- It is illegal to drive without windscreen wipers. You don't need a windscreen but, you must have the wipers.

21- The entire Encyclopedia Brittannica is banned in Texas because it contains a formula for making beer at home.

VERMONT:

1- Lawmakers made it obligatory for everybody to take at least one bath each week on Saturday night.

2- Women may not wear false teeth unless they have written permission from their husbands.

WASHINGTON:

1- All lollipops are banned.

2- A law to reduce crime states: "It is mandatory for a motorist with criminal intentions to stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he is entering the town".

3- "It shall be unlawful for a candidate for office or for nomination thereto whose name appears upon the ballot at any election to give to or purchase for another person, not a member of his or her family, any liquor in or upon any premises licensed by the state for the sale of any such liquor by the drink during the hours that the polls are open on the day of such election."

WEST VIRGINIA:

1- No children may attend school with their breath smelling of "wild onions".

2- It is illegal to put an ice cream cone in your pocket on Sundays.
3- It is illegal to spit on any sidewalk which women may walk down. (The reasoning behind this law is back in the old days women wore the long floor length dresses and their dresses would drag through the spit!!)

Well, here, it is the genius of Ricky Gervais. After "The Office", "Extras", the stand up comedies and the Hollywood success of “Ghost Town” and “The Invention Of Lying”, the latest venture “The Ricky Gervais Show” is an other sign of Gervais dexterity.

Ricky Gervais, with his long time writing partner, Stephen Merchant are this time joined by Karl Pilkington, a laconic and dry former radio producer who does not really see life in the same way that we do.

The concept of the show is not only based on “pointless conversations” between the three characters using the audio recording from the radio episodes, it is also put into visual life by the cartoon design of Hanna-Barbera (well known for being the creator of "The Flintstones").

Any random topic of conversation turned into a sweet absurd way of thinking and a childish ignorance from Pilkington that Gervais and Merchant pick on by taunting, mocking and being really sarcastic without ever offending Pilkington. His misinformed and naïve thoughts on life are priceless, as for him “everything worth inventing has already been invented, and that life would be better if progress had come to a halt a century ago” or “Airplanes, for example, haven’t done much for anyone except take passengers to places they shouldn’t visit” or “What if elderly humans gave birth to babies as a dying act, instead of the way human reproduction is currently done?”

“The Ricky Gervais Show” is insane and funny made of pure silliness, fresh and naïve comedy. The cartoon animation gives the opportunity to put images onto the crazy world of Karl Pilkington. An other contribution to the genius work of Ricky Gervais.

MUSIC - Melissa Auf der Maur - "Out of Our Minds"

When it is hot and burning outside, there is nothing better to cool you down than a Canadian girl. Melissa Auf der Maur, former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, is offering her second effort “Out of Our Minds” like a bartender would bring you a good, fresh and icy Tequila Sunrise when you are sitting by the pool and 35 degrees outside.

Melissa’s first solo album, “Auf der Maur”, was not a great piece of art, music wise but mostly, the poor lyrics did not help generating a solid and impressive first solo album. Well, word wise, her second effort is not much better. Melissa’s texts are, as before, childish and puerile and she appears to be like a little scared girl in the big frightening world of adults. However, this time, gothic whispers and lone industrial guitar supported by a dry and emotionless drums are making “Out of Our Minds” a much more mature album. The real force of this 12 songs LP is the mix between the aggressive, grunge and macabre music with the soft, naïve and innocent vocals/lyrics, a mix that reminds us of the original Alice in Lewis Carroll’s world.

LIVE - Romano Nervoso

We went all the way to Kilburn, they came all the way from Belgium. Tonight is the show, tonight we get ready for the party with the Italian Stallion from La Louvière and his band Romano Nervoso.

Wearing his Rocky Balboa boxing coat, on "Gonna Fly Now", Giacomo Nervoso is coming on stage, on the small stage of The Good Ship in Kilburn and when Mick (guitar/ backing vocals), Fabrice (bass/ backing vocals) and DS - Luca (drums) start playing "Party Time" as an opening, we know that power and energy will be part of the night too. Heads are shaking, Giacomo Nervoso is jumping all over the tiny Londonnian venue and the dozen Belgians who made the trip too are more than enjoying themselves.

The poor sound quality of the Good Ship with a far too loud bass, a quiet guitar and a very flat drums, does not affect much the boys as they keep on rocking "The Roastbeafs" and to illustrate their winding up, they invite Ross Towner from the band Headspace to sing with them "You Don't Know Me". After only 35 minutes of pure, awesome Rock'n'Roll that were enough to make the all place sweat and deaf, Romano Nervoso have to leave the stage despite a very hungry audience who's asking for much more.
