US Facing Card Rooms React to Black Friday

The US facing poker world has been dealt a blow after the US Department of Justice issued an indictment against the founders of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and the Cereus Network (Absolute and UB). All three have been charged with violations of the UIGEA, money laundering, and bank fraud.

The reaction from PokerStars and Full Tilt was immediate. They both announced that they would pull out of the US market. Cereus Network has not fully pulled out of the US market but US players can no longer deposit or withdraw from the site.

Poker Player’s Alliance chairman and former US senator Alfonse D’Amato published a scathing review of the US DOJ’s actions in the Washington Post.

Overall, the media has been as shocked and surprisingly understanding of the position of poker players. Not that the poker rooms accused of these very serious crimes are getting much media love but at least people are sympathizing with the US online poker playing community knowing that thousands of players make a living from this activity and much of their livelihood has been taken away at a time when the US is desperately attempting to create new jobs.

Several televised poker shows have pulled the plug on their programming as much of it was financed with advertising dollars from PokerStars and Full Tilt who will surely not be paying for any US based television programming anytime in the near future.

This has completely disrupted the US online poker playing market. Many professional players have a lot of money tied up on the sites and they have indicated that unless they can get cashouts before the WSOP they may need backing or may not even be able to play. Expect the fallout to hit the smaller poker tournaments as well. Many US poker players will be absent from both US and international poker tournaments.

If there’s any sort of upside whatsoever it has been that the remaining US-facing online poker sites are throwing out some pretty amazing offers for new and existing online poker players who wish to continue to play on their sites.
