Peonies in Bloom Embroidery Project -- My Progress So Far

I’m now getting ready to finish my peony embroidery project, and it feels wonderful to finally be in the home stretch. There are only a few leaves and stems, along with a handful of flower petals, left to stitch. After spending so much time working on each flower and building up the layers of colour and detail, it’s exciting to see the piece gradually taking its final shape.

I’m really pleased with how the flowers have turned out so far. I love seeing how the different shades and stitches have come together to create depth and dimension. At this stage, even the smallest details make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance of the embroidery.

With just a little more stitching left to do, I’m looking forward to embroidering those final leaves, stems, and petals and watching the remaining empty spaces come to life. I can’t wait to complete the last few stitches, step back, and see the finished peony embroidery come together as a whole.

I’ve been trying to spend at least 30 minutes every afternoon working on this embroidery piece. I usually set a timer for 30 minutes and give myself one simple goal for that session—to finish at least one small area of the pattern. New Embroidery Project---Honey Bee and Flowers

I picked up this embroidery kit the moment I spotted it in the craft section of a local store. I instantly fell in love with the sweet combination of honey bees and flowers—it was simply too pretty to leave behind!

I was so excited to get started that I began stitching as soon as we got home and continued working on it over the next few days. Then I made a promise to myself: no starting new projects until I had completely finished the one I was already working on. So, as tempting as it was to keep going, I packed this one away with the progress you see here and returned to my earlier peony project.

One thing I decided to change was the flower colors. I wasn't particularly fond of the thread shades included in the kit, so I reached into my own thread stash instead. I chose brighter, fresher colors to give the design a cheerful spring-summer feel, and I'm really happy with how they've turned out so far.

I'm looking forward to picking this project back up once I've finished my current one. Until then, this little bee and the colorful blooms will have to wait patiently!

I recently designed a set of embroidery patterns for a corner bookmark project that I’m planning to do for my daughter.

When designing these patterns, I focused on using simple stitches that anyone can try—like the lazy daisy stitch, French knots, wheel stitch rose, buttonhole stitch, and outline stitch—perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a quick embroidery project.

I’ve compiled all the embroidery designs into a single A4-format PDF file, ready for you to print onto an A4-size paper and trace onto the fabric, or to transfer directly onto stick-on transfer paper, from which you can cut out the pattern you want and stick it onto the fabric and embroider.

The PDF is a layered PDF. You can toggle on the pattern you prefer and keep the other layers invisible and then print it.

You can replace the initial H with the letter of your choice.

There are five patterns in total. I’ve added small dots in some of them to indicate where you can use beads or sequins for embellishment, or finish them with French knots. You can skip the tiny dots if you’d like to keep the design simple.

Peonies in Bloom Embroidery Project -- Progress Update

A few weeks ago, I shared the beginning of my new embroidery project — Peonies in Bloom — and I’m so happy to show you how it’s shaping up! This piece has been a lovely mix of patience, colour play, and gentle stitching sessions that have made me appreciate how each layer slowly brings the flowers to life.

Building Up the Petals

The peonies are now beginning to show their full form. I started by filling the outer petals using soft shades of coral pink and light peach, gradually blending into deeper red tones toward the centre. The shading was done with long and short stitches, which allowed the colours to transition smoothly and mimic the natural variation in real peony petals.

Each petal took time and focus — I paid attention to the direction of stitches so that they followed the curve of the flower, creating a natural flow. It’s always fascinating to watch how embroidery thread can capture depth and softness when worked patiently.

Adding the Greens

Once the main petals were mostly complete, I moved on to the leaves. I chose two shades of green — a light lime tone for the highlights and a deeper green for contrast. The satin stitch worked beautifully for the leaves, giving them a subtle sheen that stands out against the darker fabric background.

The contrast between the bright petals and the crisp green leaves adds a fresh balance to the whole composition.

Fabric and Threads

The outlines at the bottom are already traced, so once the main bloom is done, I’ll continue with the surrounding leaves and smaller blooms to complete the composition.

My goal is to finish this piece within the next few weeks.

Reflections So Far

This project has reminded me how therapeutic embroidery can be — the slow rhythm of each stitch, the quiet concentration, and the joy of seeing a design evolve thread by thread. Peonies symbolise prosperity, love, and beauty, and this embroidery truly feels like it’s blooming with each hour I spend on it.

Since I’ve been planning to make some hair bows for my daughters, I thought it would be lovely to add embroidery to them. It turned out to be the perfect way to try new stitches while creating something both useful and pretty.

Cats and Cherry Blossom Flowers Embroidery – Project Completed!

I finally finished my Cats and Cherry Blossom Flowers embroidery project, and I am happy with how it turned out!

Back in April, I shared a little progress update on this piece. At that point, most of the cherry blossoms were stitched, and I had just started working on the cats. I remember writing about how tricky it was to get the fur looking natural—it really came down to following the direction of the stitches and blending the colors slowly.

I kept a little stitch “cheat sheet” for myself along the way:

* Long-and-short stitch for shading and fur texture

The Finished Piece

The cherry blossoms are probably my favorite part—the pinks and whites came together so softly, and the little buds give it a nice touch of movement.

I’m not entirely sure I managed to capture the cats’ fur exactly the way I wanted. Getting the direction and blending of the long-and-short stitches just right is something I definitely need more practice with—it can be tricky to balance the texture while keeping it soft and natural-looking. Still, I love the overall effect. The way the two cats are nestled together gives the piece such a tender, affectionate feeling. It almost tells its own little story of comfort and the bond between a mother and her kitten under the blossoms, which makes me smile every time I look at it.

This project reminded me that embroidery really rewards patience. The long-and-short stitches took forever, but they made all the difference in how soft and natural everything looks. Adding in satin and stem stitches gave just the right amount of contrast and detail without losing that softness I was going for.

Stitches to Use

Cats and Flowers Embroidery Project Progress

Here is the update on the cats and flowers embroidery project.

This is what I have embroidered so far.

I have almost finished embroidering the cherry blossom flowers. Only a few flowers and some leaves are left.

I have started embroidering the cat now, which is a bit tricky. You have to follow the direction of the fur to mimic the fur texture and make it look realistic.

These are the stitches used in this project:

Long-and-short stitch for the flowers, leaves, and the cats.

Satin stitch for some buds.

Stem stitch for the stem.

I am planning to finish the project this week and start with the next project.

Finished Embroidery Projects---Doily and Kurta Neck Embroidery

I would like share with you today the images of the doily and kurta neck embroidery projects I had completed months back.

This is the final output of the embroidered flowers on the doily. There are some imperfections as this was an old project. I am happy that I was able to complete it as I had kept it unfinished for a very long time.

I am posting here after a very long time. I have started a new embroidery project---Cats and Flowers (I completed all my previous embroidery projects)

I wanted to try stamped embroidery kits. So I recently bought these 3-pack embroidery kits online from Amazon.co.uk.

This kit contains everything you need to stitch these projects: 3 x pre-printed piece of fabric, 3 x plastic embroidery hoop, 6 x embroidery needles, 3 x embroidery threads

3 x English instruction sheet, 1 x pair of scissors,1 x flower needle threader

I received the embroidery kits just as shown in the images on the website.

I wanted to do the Cats and Flowers embroidery first.

This stamped embroidery kit is an ideal gift for your family members, friends, and embroidery lovers.

The finished embroidery would make a special birthday or Christmas gift for your loved ones.

This is my progress so far on this project.

I have finished the doily embroidery and the kurta neck embroidery, which I will share in my next post.

My color choice is various shades of pink for the big flowers and blue or yellow for the small ones.

Hungarian Matyo Embroidery Project---Finished Project Photos

Today I want to share with you the pictures of my Hungarian embroidery project. I recently found out that the type of Hungarian embroidery which I shared with you in my earlier post on Hungarian embroidery is Matyo embroidery, and not Kalocsa embroidery as I had mistakenly assumed. I got confused with both forms of the embroidery.

I did a little research and learnt that the most prominent difference between Matyo and Kalocsa is that in Matyo embroidery the roses are usually embroidered only in red, while in Kalocsa embroidery they are done in different colors. Also Matyo embroidery was traditionally densely stitched.

Matyo embroidery is one of the traditional folk art embroidery styles in Hungary, which stretches back nearly 200 years. The motifs were sewn with bright colors such as red, green, yellow, blue, black, and purple, as well as with their soft shades. The color red retains its dominance in all motifs. Towards the end of the 19th century, peony became the most famous motif, which was given a special name, the “matyo rose," which became the main feature of the motifs.

There is also a legend about the development of matyo embroidery. Once a matyo bachelor was kidnapped by the devil. The boy’s sweetheart rhymed a lot asking him to give him back to her, and the devil said, “You’ll get your love back if you bring the most beautiful flowers of summer in your apron!” She was in trouble as they were in the middle of winter. But in the end, she figured out how to fulfill the devil’s wish. She embroidered the beautiful roses of her garden on his apron and gave it the devil in exchange for her valentine.
