It looks like the Serengueti but this is actually Madrid! What a sunset from my terrace!

¡Podría ser el Serengueti, pero se trata de Madrid!¡ Menuda puesta de sol desde mi terraza !.

No sé si te ocurre que al cabo de un tiempo de cuidar plantas en tu terraza, empiezas a conocer los diferentes periodos de luz a lo largo del año. El sol se mueve a diferentes alturas en las diferentes estaciones y con los edificios circundantes pueden ocurrir efectos curiosos. Por ejemplo en esta época del año el sol se pone en el hueco que hay entre dos edificios justo delante de mi terraza.

Hace un efecto muy bonito. He intentado reflejar en la siguiente foto la luz dorada que cae durante unos minutos en la terraza justo antes de ponerse el sol. La planta de la izquierda con florecitas de campanilla es un jacinto que huele de maravilla. La flor amarilla es un narciso. Ambos son bulbos. Las florecitas moradas pertenecen a un alyssum, que está aguantando todo el invierno en flor. Creo que es porque cuelga en la esquina en una zona que está algo resguardado del viento.

I don't know if it also happens to you that after a while you start to learn about the different periods of light on your terrace. The sun moves at different heights throughout the seasons, and in combination with the surrounding buildings it can create some interesting effects. For example at this time of the year the sun sets in between two big buildings right in front of the terrace.

So the effect is pretty nice for a couple of days. I tried to catch the golden sunny rays in this picture that we get right before the sun sets. The plant on the left with little bell like flowers is a Hyacinth that smells great. The yellow flower is a Daffodil. Both are bulbs that are blooming now. The small purple flowers belong to an Alyssum. It has been blooming all winter long. I think it is because it is hanging and feels quite protected in the corner from the wind.

You might remember about a week ago I showed you a flower bud and put your knowledge to the test. Well if you thought it was a Daffodil (or Narcissus), you were right!

Recordarás que hace una semana ponía a prueba tus conocimientos con una foto de un capullo de flor. Pues adivinaste si pensaste que era un Narciso.

Pasan los años pero yo sigo igual de fascinado con la aparición de las primeras flores de la temporada. No sé si tienes niños y te ocurre que el álbum de fotos del primogénito es algo más extenso que el de los siguientes niños... ¡Pues yo a este primer Narciso del invierno le hice fotos desde todos los ángulos!!

Years may go by but I am always just as fascinated and surprised with the first flower of the season. I do not know if you have children and by any chance you have taken twice as many pictures of your fist born than the next....Well with this first Daffodil of winter I just took pictures from all angles!

I like the way these flowers kind of look into the city. It seems like they are just obeserving and thinking about the all the busy people going about their business down below.

Me gusta la forma en que estas flores parece que están mirando hacia la ciudad. Es como si estuviesen observando y reflexionado sobre las personas que van de un lado a a otro abajo en la calle.

First Anemone in wintertime -- La primera Anemone del invierno

I bet you have been wondering about the mysterious flower in last week's post. Well here you have it, the first Anemone of wintertime!!

Seguramente te habrás estado preguntando por la flor misteriosa de la semana pasada. ¡Pues aquí tienes a la primera Anemone del invierno!

Es gracioso con las Anemone porque los años que soy un poco vago me crecen muchas. Te explico porqué. Se trata de una planta bulbosa y tiene un bulbo que es muy oscuro y pequeño, que se confunde fácilmente con la tierra. Me he dado cuenta de que los años en los que se me olvida limpiar un macetero y sacar los bulbos, pues resulta que se me reproducen de maravilla en el siguiente invierno o primavera. Sin embargo cuando arreglo el macetero en otoño, saco los bulbos para pasar el invierno, pues se conoce que los confundo con la tierra y debo tirar la mitad a la basura sin querer. Así que ya ves que a veces no es malo ser un poco perezoso y dejar a las plantas tal cual. Aquí te dejo una vista con otro ángulo para que la veas mejor. ¡¡Una flor muy bonita en invierno!!!

Funny story about Anemone, I have realized that the years that I am lazy they grow a lot more. Let me explain. This is a bulb plant and it is a pretty dark and small brown bulb that looks very much like soil. So I have noticed that some years when I do not clean up the pots in fall...because I just do not have the time or the energy (ie. when I am lazy) well that year in winter or spring time I get a whole bunch more Anemone. However when I do clean up the pots and take out the bulbs, I think that I must throw out half of these bulbs by accident because I just don't get that many flowers in spring time.! So you see, sometimes it is not bad to be a little lazy and give the plants some space!!

Another early bloomer...but who? --- Otra flor tempranera... Pero cuál?

Hello There!! --- ¡Hola de nuevo!!

I have another early bloomer. This time it is on my other balcony, the one we call at home the Berry Balcony...because we grow berries on it! Anyways last week I pictured this bud that was about to open. So here is another quiz for you, can you guess which bulb flower it will be?

a) Daffodil

b) Iris

c) Anemone

This time it is trickier than last week because the mystery flower is actually hiding behind another bulb plant. You have to look at it's peculiar leaves on the left of the picture to recognize it. Again, if you can't wait another week to find out the answer when it opens up, you can search in the blog and you will find it in winter time and spring on my balconies in previous years.

Tengo otra flor tempranera. Esta vez se encuentra en mi otro balcón, el que llamamos el Balcón de los Frutos Silvestres..porque aquí nos crecen algunos en primavera y verano :). El caso es que he fotografiado este capullo a punto de abrirse.. ¿Podrás adivinar de que flor bulbosa se trata?

Esta vez es un poco más complicado de adivinar que la semana pasada, porque la flor misteriosa se confunde al crecer detrás de otro bulbo. Para reconocerlas te tienes que fijar en sus hojas, que están en la izquierda de la foto y tienen una forma muy curiosa. La semana que viene te enseñaré la flor abierta y te diré cual es, pero si no puedes esperar siempre puedes buscarla en el blog en publicaciones de años anteriores, pues siempre florece en invierno y primavera.

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

It is the middle of winter, the days are short and it is cold. It seems like the only flowers in my terrace are these colourful pansies. However the first bulb of the season has decided to come out and say hello!

It is the tall plant on the right. Can you guess which flower it is going to be?

a) Lilium

b) Daffodil

c) Tulip

I will give you the answer in a few days when it opens up. Well if you are really curious, you can search through the blog for pictures of the flowers and you will probably figure it out (look on top right)

Estamos en la mitad del invierno, los días son cortos y hace frío. Parece que las únicas flores son estos coloridos pensamientos. ¡Sin embargo la primera flor de bulbo ya ha decidido salir adelante.!

Se trata de la planta alta de la derecha ¿Puedes adivinar que flor será?:

Igual que Arnold Schwarzenegger en Desafío Total, me gusta tomar vacaciones hasta de mí mismo. Así que no saco demasiadas fotos de flores durante mis vacaciones, pero en los últimos dos días sí que quise aprovechar el viaje a Canadá de este verano.

Estas primeras fotos están tomadas desde el coche mientras entrábamos en Toronto. Las jardineras eran tan impresionantes que hasta mi mujer quiso sacarlas mientras conducía.'' ¡Para tu blog cariño!'' Me dijo y saco estas bonitas fotos:

Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall, I like to take holidays from myself. So during my summer break I did not take too many pictures of plants. However on the last few days of holidays in Canada I did take some shots.

Actually these first pictures were taken by my wife. We were driving into Toronto and she said: ''Wow honey, these are beautiful, you should show them on your blog!!!''

Check out this incredible pot with geranium and hedera that hangs like it was rain! Beautiful!

Paseando por Toronto, en la catedral de St.James me sentía a ratos como en la vieja Europa observando esta bonita lavanda.

Walking around Toronto in St.James Cathedral, I felt like back in the Old Europe.

Downton Toronto we found this little plaza with the most incredible flower decoration. I found these very balanced in colour and shape. Very elegant.

En el centro de Toronto nos encontramos en una placita con estas jardineras que me llamaron la atención por su elegancia. Me encanta el contraste de colores y la forma armoniosa, con la planta alta en el centro y alrededor todo cayendo.

Estamos acostumbrados en España a ver muchos cultivos de plantas de girasol. Sin embargo seguro que sorprende ver la planta en Toronto. Tenemos la idea de que Canadá es un sitio muy frío, y lo es en invierno, pero es también un país luminoso, y lo demuestra esta planta a la que le encanta crecer alta hacia el sol.

We are very used in Spain to seeing fields and fields of Sunflowers. So it called my attention to see them growing by a house like this. People have this idea of Canada being a cold place, which it is in wintertime of course, but it is also a sunny country. At least enough for a sun loving plant like this one to grow to its full height in summer time!!!

Me gustaría compartir un momento del viaje que fue especial para mí. Las siguientes fotos son de la calle en la que viví en Ottawa. En ellas puedes ver una influencia muy importante para mí en mi gusto por la decoración floral de mis balcones. Intento traer un poco de este precioso estilo Canadiense suburbano a la ciudad.

And now a big moment for me. The following pictures belong to the street I lived in. Now you can see the influence I had in my flowering decoration. I try to bring this beautiful Canadian suburban look to the pots in my city balconies.

It was great to walk around and see that my old neighbourhood was so pretty. People take pride and good care of their gardens. I love it!!

La mayoría de las casas tienen una zona con plantas bastante cuidada.¡¡ Me gustó pasear por mi antiguo barrio y verlo tan bien cuidado!!

Esta es la casa en la que viví durante unos años en Canadá. Siempre es un momento especial cuando vuelves a una antigua casa, y especialmente cuando está tan lejos de la mía actual. Me hice varias fotos y en cada una mi hijo salía peor que en la anterior...yo todo emocionado y él negándose a salir... en fin el pobre tenía hambre no entendía lo trascendental del momento.

And here is my old house. It is always special to go back to a place where you have lived. Specially for me now that I have been living in Spain for over 20 years. Of course my five year old son could understand nothing about important moments and was hungry, in a bad mood and decided he was not showing his face on the picture!!!

Let's travel back in time. Same house, 30 years earlier!!. That is me all ready for a soccer match with my team 'The Gloucester Hornets'. You can see clearly that my love for plants has grown on me ever since I was a kid. I mean look at that beautiful arrangement my Mom hade prepared at home. I can see Marygold, petunias and salvia, among others. I remember helping my mom preparing this and thinking: OK I am getting tired. This must be fun when you are old. I wonder if mom will get mad if I tell her I want to go and play with Jeff and Jaime. And now I have so much fun with plants!! I also remember the red salvia, and how I would take its flowers out and suck up the nectar. It was delicious!!

Y ahora un viaje atrás en el tiempo. Aquí estoy yo mismo en la misma casa...¡¡30 años antes!!!! Justo antes de un partido de fútbol con mi equipo 'The Gloucester Hornets'. Puedes ver en esta foto que mi vocación por las plantas nace por una importante influencia en casa. Me acuerdo perfectamente de estar ayudando a mi madre cuando preparó esta preciosa combinación con claveles chinos, petunias, geranios y salvia, entre otras. Me encantaba acercarme a las flores de salvia, las sacaba y les chupaba el néctar. ¡¡¡Estaba buenísimo!!!!

Flores de invierno: Pensamiento y Cyclamen -- Winter flowers: Pansies and Cyclamen

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!!

Recently a friend of mine told me that she had lost all of her pretty flowers in wintertime. Of course that happens to me every year too. However there are certain flowers that will add lots of colour to your balcony during winter. Here you have an example. I bought and planted this Pansy and the Cyclamen in September. These are winter flowers and they will last until spring time.

There are a whole bunch of other bulb plants also growing in the pot, but they won't grow any flowers for a month or two. The small Blueberry tree also loses its leaves during wintertime. So with these flowers my pot looks nice in wintertime!

Hace poco una amiga me comentaba que se le acaban de morir todas las flores en invierno. Eso me ocurre a mí también todos los años. Sin embargo hay algunas flores que sí pueden aportar mucho color a tu balcón en invierno. Aquí tienes un ejemplo. Compré y planté este pensamiento y cyclamen en el mes de septiembre. Son plantas que me darán flores hasta la primavera.

En la jardinera he plantado también unos cuantos bulbos que empiezan ya a crecer pero no darán flores hasta dentro de un par de meses. El arbolito de arándano ha perdido sus hojas en invierno. ¡Así que con estas flores de invierno tengo animada la jardinera!

La que han liado los camellos en mi terraza --- The mess the camels made in my terrace

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

¡Menudo lío han dejado los camellos de los Reyes Magos en mi terraza! Así hemos amanecido en casa, con muchos regalos pero la terraza hecha un lío. No sé si es tradición también en tu país, pero en España tenemos esta tradición cristina. Había tres reyes magos que venían siguiendo una estrella que les llevó a Belén y le trajeron tres regalos al niño Jesús. Así que en la noche del 5 de enero, los tres reyes magos montados en sus camellos le traen regalos a los niños.

Hay un poco de competencia entre ellos y Papá Noel, y yo diría que le han pisoteado con un poco de saña.....

What a mess the camels of the Three Wise Men have made in my terrace!! We woke up with a whole bunch of presents and this tremendous mess... There is a christian tradition in Spain. It is based on the Three Wise Men that were following a shooting star and came upon baby Jesus. They gave him three presents. So every 5th of January, they bring toys to all the children in Spain.

Now there is a little bit of competition with Santa Claus and ....well I think they kind of stepped all over him on purpose!!!

Well now that we are here, let's take a look around! I am sorry but I haven't got that much to show this year. We are going to paint the terrace in wintertime and I am sort of rearranging the flower decoration and have taken down some pots. Also I am using crutches because of a sports injury so I have not been able to buy any extra plants lately and there are some bare patches on my pots.

Anyways here is what you have on your left. In winter time Pansies will always bring colour to your balcony!

¡Bueno pues ya que estamos en la terraza echemos un vistazo! Me temo que no tengo mucho que mostrar. Este año pintamos la terraza y he estado retirando algunos maceteros. Además ando con muletas por una lesión deportiva y no he podido salir a comprar algunas plantas así que hay algunos huecos en mis maceteros.

Como puedes apreciar en invierno el pensamiento aporta mucho color a la terraza!

Si nos giramos a la derecha, tengo unos maceteros similares. Estos los preparé en septiembre y tienen ya los bulbos de invierno empezando a brotar y animados por pensamientos.

Turning now to the right you can see I have two very similar pots. I prepared them in September with loads of bulbs that are growing already and they also have some Pansies to bring them colour.

Let's finish with a close up. You might remember on the post about my visit to Canada I showed some examples of contrasting flowers in a pot. Here we have the purple flowers of an Alyssum plant, (that is holding on surprsingly well in winter time) with some orange Marygold behind. These are second generation, their parents dried up in summer time but left with some seeds that started growing by themselves and I planted them all over. It was quite a lucky strike!

Si nos acercamos un poco podemos ver este primer plano. En la última publicación del verano en Canadá enseñaba unos ejemplos de contrastes en jardineras. En este caso la flor morada es de un Alyssum (que está aguantando especialmente bien el invierno) con unos claveles chinos detrás. Estos son de segunda generación pues los padres se me secaron durante las vacaciones del verano pero me dejaron unas semillitas que germinaron y las planté por todas partes. Un poco de suerte no viene mal de vez en cuando!!

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!

2015 va a ser un buen año para los amantes de las plantas en España. Se ha reducido el IVA (nuestro impuesto sobre transacciones comerciales que financia el consumidor) sobre las plantas y flores desde el 21% al 10%. Copio a continuación unas cuantas publicaciones que he encontrado en la red que me han parecido interesantes. Hay comentarios para todos los gustos, pero aparte de los motivos políticos o el análisis sobre lo acertado de esta situación, yo me quedo con que es una buena noticia para el sector y para los consumidores. Así que te animo a visitar a tu vivero o floristería favorita y empieza ya a decorar tu balcón o tu terraza, ¡que este año te sale más barato!.

2015 is going to be a good year for plant lovers in Spain. The sales tax on flowers and plants has been reduced from 21 % to 10%. I have copied some news and comments on the subject. Sorry but it is all in Spanish! It seems like there might be some political reasons behing this move. But no matter what the reason, I find it is great news for the sector and for the consumers. So this year there is no excuse in Spain for a terrace without flowers!!!

Best of 2014, Part 1: Canada's Wonderland --- Lo mejor del 2014, parte 1: Canada's Wonderland

Hello there!!! --- ¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!

Este verano nos fuimos de vacaciones a Canadá. Para mí es un viaje muy especial pues veo a mis viejos amigos y me reencuentro con un país maravilloso. Como tenemos niños pequeños nos fuimos a un parque increíble en Toronto llamado Canada's Wonderland. Os lo voy a enseñar bajo la mirada de un jardinero urbano.

This summer we spent our holidays in Canada. For me it was a very special trip because I got to see my old friends again and got to rediscover such a wonderful country. Since we have small kids we spent a weekend visiting Canada's Wonderland, and incredible park in Toronto. Let me show it to you under the eyes of an urban gardener.

The entrance is very impressive. I felt like I had a see of begonias in front of me.

La entrada es impresionante. Tenía la sensación de estar delante de una mar de begonias.

Tanto en Toronto como en Ottawa ví muchos maceteros colgantes. Aunque pocos tan floridos y hermosos como este. Creo que tengo un reto para mi terraza este verano....

It called my attention to see many of these hanging pots in Toronto and Ottawa. However this is one of the biggest and most colourful! I think I have a challenge for my terrace this summer...

Besides enjoying the sight of beautiful flowers there are actually quite a few fun things to do at Canada's Wonderland. My son was very impressed with this dinosaur. But what impressed me the most is that blue structure in the background....

Además de disfrutar de la preciosa decoración floral, hay muchas cosas que hacer en Canada's Wonderland. A mi hijo de cuatro años le impresionaba mucho este dinosaurio. A mí lo que me impresionó fue la estructura azul del fondo....

Se trata del Leviathan. Mi amigo Mike me propuso montar con él. Por la amistad que nos une desde la infancia, y por esto de siempre quedar bien con un amigo me acerqué a observar la montaña rusa. Es enorme. Observé la primera subida a uno 93 metros, me fijé en la caida de 80º y ví como el vagón alcanza los 148 km/h en su primera caída. De verdad que lo intenté...pero aunque puse en riesgo mi hombría y amistad, ¡tuve que declinar amablemente la invitación!

Tras estas dos impresionantes maceteros colgantes de petunias y calibrochoa, puedes ver un vagón a punto de tomar esa primera bajada.

That is the Leviathan roller coaster. My friend Mike invited me to ride with him. Because of our friendship since we are kids, and this thing guys have about being at least a little brave, I moved up close to check it out. So I saw the first hill which goes up to 93 m (306 feet), and I observed a wagon full of people slide down a 80º slope, reaching a speed of 148 km/h (92miles per hour). Honestly I tried it but...I just could not get on so I kindly declined the invitation!

Right behind these beautiful hanging pots made of petunia and calibrochoa you can see a wagon taking on that first hill I just described.

Just in case you are curious about it, I found this video on google, it is really impressive. Do you think you would be able to get on? :)

Riding Leviathan--Montando el Leviathan

Por si tienes curiosidad por verlo, he encontrado este vídeo en google que es realmente impresionante. ¿Crees que te atreverías a subirte? :)

Finalmente nos montamos en las montañas rusas más familiares, como esta llamada Ghoster Coaster y que a los niños les encantó. Entre viaje y viaje pude apreciar esta bonita combinación basada en begonias. Siempre queda bien romper la monotonía de un mar de flores con unas plantas altas en el centro.

Finally we did take on some more family type rides, like the Ghoster Coaster. The kids loved it. I found this combination based on begonias very nice. It always breaks the monotony of a sea of flowers to put some nice tall ones in the middle.

I liked the simplicity of this geranium on a rocky pot, with a medieval castle behind.

Me gustó la simplicidad de estos geranios sobre un macetero de piedra con el castillo medieval al fondo.

Termino la exposición con tres combinaciones basadas en el contraste, que hasta ahora han sido todo maceteros muy armoniosos pero con poca variedad de color.

Este primero me encantó porque yo también combino en los maceteros de mi casa la lavanda con el clavel chino. ¡Claro que en menores cantidades! Esto es un éxito seguro, pero si lo planificas para tu casa, no olvides de incorporar por ejemplo unas petunias moradas cerca de la lavanda. De esta forma te aseguras el contraste entre morado y amarillo todo el verano, pues la flor de lavanda probablemente no dure toda la temporada.

I finish off with the next three pictures that are based on showing contrasting colours. Up to now the combinations had a lot of harmony but not much variety in colours.

This one called my attention because I also use back at home the combination of Lavender and Marygold. Of course in my pots there aren't so many!. This will always work out nicely. However if you are planning this for your house don't forget to plant maybe some purple Petunias close to the Lavender. This way you will have that nice contrast between purple and yellow throughout the season, because the Lavender will probably not give you flowers all summer long.

Again here we have some lovely contrast with purple and red versus yellow and orange. We get to peek at the inside of the pot so we can see the structure. I really want to copy this in my house next summer. Oh and there is a terrifyingly tall structure behind...didn't ride it either!

De nuevo una bonita combinación de contraste entre rojo y morado frente a amarillo y naranja. Además podemos echar un vistazo al interior del macetero. Tengo que copiar esto el año que viene. Ah y por detrás una estructura altísima... ¡¡en la que tampoco me monté!!

Por último un precioso contraste de nuevo y un pequeño homenaje a este maravilloso país. Viví aquí de niño y me quedé prendado con la forma de ser de su gente y su estilo de vida. En la siguiente publicación te mostraré ejemplos de decoración floral en sus casas, que es muy bonito y merece la pena!!

To finish off some more beautiful contrasting colours. A little tribute to Canada too. I lived here as a kid and I have always been fascinated with the Canadian people and their way of life. In the next post I will share some pictures of flower decorations in their homes and cities. It is going to be nice!

We rent our apartment in Altea, a beautiful town in the East Coast of Spain. Originally a small fisherman's village, it has slowly transformed and opened its arms to tourism while maintaining its charm. It offers an incredible variety of high quality restaurants and bars and is crowned by a church and magical streets with incredible sights that are there for you to discover.

Alquilamos un apartamento en Altea, un pueblo precioso en la costa este de España. Originalmente un pueblo de pescadores, se ha transformado poco a poco hacia el turismo sin perder su encanto. Ofrece una gran variedad de restaurantes y bares de calidad y está coronado por una bonita iglesia rodeada de calles mágicas con unas vistas impresionantes que esperan a ser descubiertas.

Nuestro apartamento está muy cerca del mar, en una finca llamada Iguazú, pegado a esta palmera enorme. Dale al vínculo si quieres verlo en el mapa, entre la calle Conde de Altea y Partida Clot Mingot. Tiene garaje y fácil acceso desde autovía.

Our apartment is very close to the sea, in a building called Iguazú, right besides this very tall palm tree. Click the map if you want to see where it is, between the streets Conde de Altea and Partida Clot Mingot. It has a garage and an easy access from the highway.

It has two terraces that add up to 77 m² . This is a picture of the big one ,where you tend to spend most of the time. There are some stairs on the left that lead you down the second smaller terrace.

Tiene dos terrazas que suman 77 m² . Esta es la de arriba, que es más grande y donde se suele hacer mucha vida. En la izquierda puedes ver las escaleras que bajan a la otra terraza que es más pequeña.

Entremos en la casa a echar un vistazo. La cocina es amplia y está abierta al salón. La hemos equipado con todo lo necesario para pasar un tiempo agradable de vacaciones.

Let's take a look inside the house! The kitchen is quite nice and it is open to the living room. We have bought all the equipment that our guests will need during their holidays.

If you turn around 180º at this point, you can see the rest of the living room and its two glass doors opening to the terrace. There is WIFI connection and a smart TV.

Si en este punto nos giramos 180º, podemos ver el resto del salón y como da a la terraza a través de las dos grandes puertas de cristal correderas. Hay conexión WIFI y smart TV.

En la otra mitad de la casa se encuentran los dos dormitorios y el cuarto de baño. Este dormitorio tiene dos camas. Es pequeñito pero va perfecto para niños.

In the other half of the house there are two bedrooms and a washroom. This is room has two beds. It is a little small but it has a perfect size for kids.

We have improved the furniture of the washroom a little after this picture. Our guests will find a nice set of towels, shampoo and soap on their arrival.

Hemos mejorado un poco el cuarto de baño tras tomar esta foto. Es pequeñito pero tiene todo lo que puedes necesitar. Nuestros huéspedes se encontrarán unos bonitos juegos de toallas, champú y jabón a su llegada.

El segundo dormitorio tiene cama de matrimonio y da a la terraza. Hemos puesto unas cortinas bien oscuras para los dormilones y la cama es nueva de este año.

The second room has one bed and an exit to the terrace. We added some extra dark curtains for those that like to sleep in. The bed is new from this year.

This is a picture that was taken from the top terrace before we moved in and started working on those plants. The premises have a swimming pool and a padel court. Padel is miniature tennis where the ball can bounce of the walls. A very fun sport, very big thing in Spain that you can try with our raquets. If you come from the North I bet you can probably swim all year round in that swimming pool. I haven't dared to try it in winter time yet!

Esta foto se tomó desde la terraza superior antes de que nos mudásemos y arreglase las plantas. La finca tiene piscina y pista de padel. El padel es un tenis en miniatura en el que la pelota rebota en las paredes. Es muy divertido y muy popular en España. Si quieres probarlo tenemos raquetas y pelotas en el apartamento.

Para terminar esta foto que me parece especial. En la terraza se está muy bien por el día, pero también es muy agradable por la noche. No hay como tomarse una bebida después de cenar tumbado en las tumbonas y disfrutando de una conversación bajo la luna.

Let me finish with a special picture. The terrace is great during the day, but I specially like it at night. There is nothing like having a little drink after dinner, lying on the sunlounger and enjoying a conversation under the moon.

El apartamento es muy acogedor y confortable, tal y como aparece en las fotos, la terraza de dos alturas es muy grande, ideal para desayunar o cenar en ella, el sofá es realmente cómodo y el sillón que no se ve en las fotos también. Estaba todo muy limpio y en muy buen estado.
El paseo marítimo está muy cerca y hay muchos restaurantes donde comer o cenar muy bien y a muy buen precio, el casco viejo de Altea es impresionante y se puede ir caminando si no te importa subir escaleras.
Hemos pasado tres días muy tranquilos y muy agusto en el apartamento de Ana, ideal para repetir.

The apartment is absolutely fantastic and I think the pictures don't do it enough justice. Everything is exactly like shown, but the rooms are much bigger than they appear in photos. It was perfect for our stay and we would not only recommend it but are already planning our return for a longer visit. Ana was fantastic and our check-in and check-out were very easy. The flat was also very clean and had everything we needed.

Back after a break -- De vuelta tras un descanso

¡¡Hola de nuevo!! --- Hi there!!

It is great to be back! Sorry but I had to take a 6 month break from the blog. I have missed it a lot.

¡Es genial estar de vuelta! Lo siento pero me tuve que ausentar del blog durante medio año. La verdad es que lo he echado de menos.

Way back in the month of March, we came across an opportunity to buy an apartment in the beautiful beach town of Altea(Spain). The house has two incredible terraces and look at all that space for flowers. I was going crazy! But what really made me take the snap decision that I loved the house was when I saw my little boy running around like this. He looked so happy!.

Allá por el mes de marzo nos encontramos con una oportunidad de comprar un apartamento en la playa en el precioso pueblo de Altea(España). Tiene dos terrazas increíbles, y fíjate menudas jardineras. Un sueño hecho realidad. Pero cuando vi a mis hijos jugando en la terraza, me hizo tomar la decisión en el momento. ¡Al pequeño se le veía tan feliz!

Así que tras muchos cálculos, idas y venidas, ayuda inestimable familiar, nos decidimos con la compra. Además de la jardinera de la terraza de arriba, la casa tiene esta otra jardinera. Está ahí, toda vacía y esperando que me ponga manos a la obra. ¡El sueño de todo jardinero urbano!

So after some thought, lots of calculating and very important help from the family, we went ahead and bought it. Besides the space for plants on the top terrace, look at all the space on the lower one. It is totally empty, just waiting for me to get working, it is the dream come true for any urban gardener!!

So we have spent most of our weekends in Altea, working on the house. This here is a picture of the top terrace in the month of July. The colourful plants on the centre and right are called Oleander, or Nerium. It is a small tree, or big shrub, that comes originally from the Mediterranean coast. You can see them all over the place here, specially in the highways.These were already here and I simply watered them and they came back to life.

Así que hemos pasado muchos fines de semana arreglando la casa. En esta foto del mes de julio se ve la jardinera ya arreglada. Las plantas más grandes que se ven en el centro y en la derecha son adelfas. Es una planta originaria de la costa mediterránea que se ve por todas partes, y especialmente en las carreteras. Es un árbol pequeño, o arbusto grande. Estaban ya en la terraza y simplemente se recuperaron con un poco de agua.

En la parte izquierda de la terraza hice una composición de las que me gustan a mí, con flores de temporada.

On the left side of the terrace I prepared one of my typical combinations with seasonal plants.

The weather in Altea is different that the weather in Madrid, and I now have a lot of space versus the reduced space of my city pots. So there are new rules for plants that I have to learn about. It is a completely new dimension for me. I love it, but I am already making beginners' mistakes!! Let me show you the first one. This is a picture of the left side corner in June.

El clima de Altea es diferente al de Madrid, y ahora tengo mucho más espacio en comparación con las pequeñas jardineras de ciudad que suelo utilizar. Así que tengo que aprender a seguir nuevas reglas para mis plantas. Es como añadir una nueva dimensión y me encanta. Sin embargo, ¡¡ ya he cometido algún error de novato!! Por ejemplo fíjate en la bonita foto de la esquina tomada en el mes de junio.

Un mes más tarde las plantas han crecido mucho y cuelgan de manera muy bonita. El efecto es el que buscaba pero ha ocurrido que algunas plantas han crecido tanto que han tapado a otras y la mitad se han muerto. Así que tengo que ir aprendiendo a distinguir cuales son más invasoras y a plantar con más separación de la habitual.

One month later, in July, the flowers are hanging out and looking lovely. This is the effect I was looking for. However some of the plants have outgrown others and basically only half of the plants I planted have made it. So now I have to learn which species are more invasive than others and learn to separate them when I plant them.

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

Vuelvo hacia atrás un par de semanas. A mediados de mayo tenía las plantas en mal estado porque se me secaron en mis vacaciones de semana santa. Pasé un sábado por la mañana con mis hijos en la terraza. La mayor ayudaba y el pequeño destrozaba...pero pasamos un rato muy agradable :). En esta parte de la terraza, la única flor es esta increible amaryllis.

I am going back in time for two weeks. Halfway thorugh May my plants were in a poor state because they had dried up during my Easter holidays. I enjoyed a very nice Saturday morning with my kids. The oldest one was helping me and the youngest one was destroying everything...but we spent some quality time together. Check out this incredible Amaryllis, the only flower in this part of the terrace!!

So after trimming away all the dry plants on the next weekend we went shopping. We put away all the bulbs that had given flowers in winter and substituted them with spring plants. I am not sure if you can appreciate it but this little Cranberry tree is in the picture above, hidding behind some dry iris plants. The white and red flowers belong to a plant called Calibrachoa.

Tras recortar las plantas secas al siguiente fin de semana nos fuimos de compras. Guardamos los bulbos que ya nos habian dado flores y sustimos por plantas de temporada. No sé si se aprecia que este arbolito de arándanos está en la foto anterior, pero estaba cubierto por unos iris ya secos. Las flores blancas y rosas son ambas calibrochoa.

Mirando a la izquierda en el balcón, el macetero contiguo al anterior es una animada combinación de plantas de primavera.

Looking to the left the next pot is a lively combination of spring plants.

Spring time is great because it is easy to make colouful arrangements of flowers. It sure makes taking pictures easy. I like to alwasy have a nice tall flower, like this purple Salvia.

Me encanta la primavera porque es fácil encontrar combinaciones bonitas de colores y las fotos salen muy animadas. Me gusta siempre colocar una planta alta para que resalte, como esta salvia .

Las tagete, o claveles chinos son socorridas para los maceteros. Las flores moradas pequeñas pertenecen a una lobelia. Con esta planta estoy experimentando pues no recuerdo haberla comprado nunca.

I use Marygold a lot because they combine quite well with everything. The small purple flowers belong to a Lobelia, first time for me we will see how it turns out.

Me despido con esta bonita foto de la Amaryllis. Compré esta planta hace unos tres años y ha crecido año tras año. Esta acompañada de unas pequeñas brodiaea, otro bulbo que me gusta como florece a la vez que su compañera gigante.

So I will say goodbye with my Amaryllis. I bought this plant about three years and it has been getting bigger every year. I like how the very small Brodiaea blooms with it every year.

¡Hola de nuevo! --- Hello there!!

Se acaban de abrir las florecitas de mi jazmín falso. Es la planta trepadora que se encuentra debajo del geranio golgante...¡¡¡ que como ves también está muy hermoso!!!.

In Spain we call it the false jasmine, but checking wikipedia I see it is called jasmine nightshade, or solanum jasminoides.Well what is important is that is just bloomed. I am taking about the climbing plant that you can see under the hanging geranium, which also looks pretty good!!!

We have to move a little closer to check out the flowers. There's lots of them and they are quite small. Now I agree that they would never win a beauty contest...but they have a secret. They smell great!!!! This is the type of plant you need if you want to bring a strong fragance to your balcony.

Hay que acercarse un poco para ver las flores, que hay muchas pero son pequeñas. De acuerdo en que estas flores no ganarán un concurso de belleza.... pero tienen un secreto, ¡¡¡Huelen de maravilla!!!! Este es el tipo de planta que necesitas si quieres traer una buena fragancia a un rincón de tu balcón.

Siempre me gusta experimentar hasta encontrar la planta perfecta que rellena la base de la maceta de una trepadora. En mi caso tiene que ser una planta de semisombra. En el lado izquierdo tengo esta planta con florecitas moradas (cuyo nombre no recuerdo y si alguien me lo indica con un comentario estaré agradecido). Ha aguantado bien el invierno y está creciendo con fuerza en primavera.

I always like to experiment with plants that will cover the base of the pot for climbing plants. In my case these are plants that like a little shade. Here on the left side I have this one with little violet flowers that has done great. Sorry I don't know the name, if you do please leave a comment and tell me.

On the right side I have two types of Oxalis plants. I specially like the one with purple leaves and small bell like flowers. This is a bubl plant and in winter it loses leaves and flowers, and they have grown back this April.

En la parte derecha tengo dos plantas de oxalis que van bien en semisombra. Me resulta muy especial la oxalis con hojas moradas y florecitas en forma de campana. Es un bulbo que pierde las hojas en invierno y en abril ha vuelto a crecer.

I went shopping for colourful spring flowers this Saturday. I was going to buy a few petunias....but I got carried away!!

Me fui de compras este sábado en busca de flores de primavera. Inicialmente iba a comprar unas pocas petunias pero....¡¡se me fue la mano!!

I spent a very relaxing Saturday afternoon preparing this pot. It has the classical spring plants you can easily find in Madrid: Geranium, Marigold, Salvia, Alyssum and Petunias.

Pasé un rato muy relajante el sábado por la tarde preparando este macetero. Lleva las clásicas plantas de primavera que te puedes encontrar ahora en Madrid: Geranio, tagete, salvia, petunias y alyssum.

And now if we take a step back we can enjoy this nice hanging Geranium that is welcoming spring with a whole bunch of flowers.

Dando un paso hacia atrás, ¡fíjate que bonito está este geranio colgante!!

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

Sorry but I have not been able to post anything in the last two weeks. Don't you find that the one thing that all families share more easily is a virus? We have been sharing a tremendous cold in the family so I have either been feeling lousy or taking care of the family when others were sick.

But hey, check out this beautiful purple Clematis flower in perfect shape!!

Lo siento porque llevo un par de semanas sin publicar nada. ¿No te parece que la única cosa que realmente comparten todas las familias es un buen virus? Nosotros hemos estado compartiendo un tremendo resfriado, así que mientras no estaba malo, andaba cuidando al resto de la familia.

¡¡Pero las que están de maravilla son mis clematis!!

Hace un mes compartía unas fotos de clematis blancas. Ahora me han florecido las rojas...bueno es más bien un color vino.

About a month ago I was sharing pictures of my white Clematis. Now the red ones are blooming...well they are more like red wine colour.

Taking a look from above you can see how nicely they decorate the balcony walls. There are still a few white ones left.

Mirando desde arriba se puede ver lo bien que decoran las paredes del balcón. Todavía me queda alguna blanca.

Me despido con esta foto del macetero del cual crecen la planta de Clematis de flor roja, y la de flor blanca. Recordarás que he estado enseñando las flores del Cyclamen este invierno. Como ves ya no le quedan flores y empieza su declive hasta el siguiente otoño. ¡Pero no pasa nada porque la Clematis lo cubre todo!. Igual reconoces la planta de oxalis que ha brotado. Bueno en poco tiempo tendrá flores y será más protagonista.

I will say goodbye with this picture of the pot from where the Clematis plant of red flowers and the one of white flowers both grow from. You might remember I have shown some pictures of this pot with some Cyclamen flowers throughout the winter. Well it has lost its flowers and now will slowly die and grow back in autumn. But that is Ok because as you see the Clematis is taking over!! You might recognize also the Oxalis plant. In one or two weeks it should grow some nice flowers and I will show them off!!

Mis flores en la UVI --- My plants in intensive care

¡Hola de nuevo!! -- Hello There!!

I had a wonderful Easter break and went down to the beach with my family for a whole week. But when I came back.....Arghhhh!!!! my plants almost died on me !!!!

Tuve una semana santa estupenda, descansando toda la semana en la playa con mi familia. Pero cuando volví fue terrible....¡¡¡¡Arghhhhh!!!!..¡¡¡¡Mis plantas casi se me mueren!!!!.

Siempre que me voy unos días bajo las plantas al suelo y las riego con mucha agua. Pero esta vez me fui demasiado tiempo y además hizo un calor tremendo. Las flores de iris tuvieron que abrirse y secarse en cuestión en un par de dias....que pena.

Whenever I leave for a few days I take the pots down on the floor of the balcony so they won't get too much sun and I water as much as possible. But this time I was away for too long and it was really warm. The Iris flowers must have all bloomed and dried up in a matter of days...what a pity

What worried me the most is the Cranberry tree. On my last post I was showing the first flowers. Here you can see how the little fruits had started to grow, but the little tree was loosing all its leaves.

Lo que más me preocupó fue el arbolito de arándano. En la publicación anterior se le veían las primeras flores. Ahora le habían empezado a crecer los frutitos, pero estaba perdiendo las hojas.

Bueno pues aprovecharé esta crisis para compartir lo que hice para resucitar las plantas del balcón. Lo primero lógicamente es echar agua. Fíjate en la diferencia con esta santolina totalmente seca:

So let's make the best of this accident and let me share with you what I did to bring the balcony back to life. The first step obviously is to water. Check out the difference before and after watering this Santolina plant.

y unas horas después de regar ya se ha recuperado.

Recuerdo de mis clases de biología del bachillerato, hace muuuuucho tiempo, que estudié el concepto de turgencia que explica esta fenómeno. Resulta que las células de las plantas son como pequeños globos que cuando se hinchan de agua obtienen su rigidez.

Aquí tienes otro ejemplo con una planta de dragonaria, sin agua las células se quedan vacías y pierden fuerza para sujetarse a si mismas. Es la primera señal de que una planta está deshidratada, las hojas se quedan todas blanditas y se caen bajo su propio peso:

I remember a concept from my Biology class, waaaaaay back in High School, called turgor pressure which explains this. You can imagine cells to be like little balloons and when they are all filled up with water, they have strenght to be rigid. Here is another example with a Dragonaria plant. The fist sign that a plant is dehydrated is that its leaves kind of fall down, like they can't hold themeselves up.

A few hours after watering, the cells are all filled up and can hold themselves straight up.

Unas horas después de regar, las células se han llenado de agua y la planta se sostiene de nuevo.

Así que las plantas se recuperaron solo con regarlas. Sin embargo al colgarlas de nuevo en el balcón, se veían muchas hojas amarillas y todas las plantas de bulbos perdieron sus flores.

So simply with watering the plants got better. However when I hung the plants as you can see there are many dry leafs and all the bulb flowers have dried up.

Lo que hice a continuación fue cortar todas las hojas muertas. De esta forma le ayudo a las plantas a recuperarse lo antes posible y concentrando toda la savia en las partes vivas. Además, y al haber bastantes hojas muertas, al retirarlas le da más luz a las partes verdes que tienen que crecer.

So what I did then was cut off all the dead leaves. There are two reason for doing this. First you take away all the parts that are dying off and therefore you help the plant concentrate on regrowing the live parts. Second you let the sun reach the live parts and they will grow faster.

y así tras un buen rato, el balcón empieza a tener mejor pinta. No han quedado casi flores de los bulbos, pero por lo menos no he tenido bajas. A los pocos días regaré con abono.

So that looks better now. I will water with fertilizer in a few days to give a an extra boost.

Most of my bulbs where reaching the end of their life cycle anyways. The Tulips, Cyclamen, Hyacinths and Daffodils were all going to die off until next fall in any case.

La mayor parte de los bulbos estaban llegan al final de su ciclo en cualquier caso. Todos los tulipanes, cyclamen, narcisos y jacintos estaban empezando a perder su parte superior hasta el siguiente otoño.

Me despido con esta foto de la dragonaria, que unos días después ya se está recuperando y ofreciendo nuevas flores. ¡Vuelve la vida al balcón!

So I say goodbye with this picture of the Dragonaria flowers. Some days afterwards it is recovering and giving me some beautiful flowers. Life has come back to my balcony!!

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

Espero que estés pasando unas buenas vacaciones de semana santa.

¡¡Justo el día antes de irnos de vacaciones se abrieron mis Iris!!. En esta foto puedes ver la primera flor de iris que está acompañada de unas florecitas blancas, que son del arbolito de arándano.

I hope you are spending some nice Easter Holidays. It was last week, right before I left for my holidays, that the first Iris opened up!!!. Right undernith it are some small white flowers. These belong to my small Cranberry tree.

You might have guessed that this is happening in the Berry Balcony. Here you have another shot of the little Cranberry tree flowers. Right undernith it are the last Muscari of the season.

Habrás descubierto ya que las fotos son de la terraza de los frutos silvestres. Justo debajo de las flores de arándano puedes ver los último muscari de la temporada.

Quedan todavía unas pocas anemone en la terraza, ¡las últimas de la temporada!

There are only a few Anemone left in the balcony, also the last of the season!!

I love the Iris flowers, but I am not sure if I would recommend them for all balcony gardeners. First of all it is a kind of delicate plant. I have only been able to grow it on this balcony which has very little wind. Second of all, when the flowers bloom they are awesome, but it is a prize that does not last for very long.

Me encanta la flor de Iris. Sin embargo no sé si es una planta que recomendaría a todos los jardineros de balcones. Por un lado es algo delicada, yo por ejemplo solo he conseguido que me crezcan en este balcón, que casi no tiene viento. Por otro lado es una planta preciosa cuando florece pero es un premio que dura muy poquito, pues las flores no suelen demasiado. Este año me ha cogido la floración en mis vacaciones de semana santa y no las voy a disfrutar.

Este año los bulbos se me han reproducido bastante bien. En este macetero puedes contar hasta seis flores que van a florecer ¡¡y estoy seguro que el año pasado no tenía tantas!!!

This year the bulbs have reproduced quite well. In this pot you can count up to 6 flowers buds and I am sure I did not have so many last year!. Too bad I left on a week of holidays and could not take this picture at its best!!

¡Hola de nuevo! -- Hello there!!

Spring is here and my balcony is coming to life!!!

¡¡Llego la primavera y con ellas vinieron las flores a mi balcón!!

Si miramos un poco de cerca podemos apreciar estos bonitos pensamientos acompañados de muscari.

If we look closely we can appreciate these colourful Pansies accompanied by purple Muscari.

And now if you turn around and look towards the inside of the house you can see this nice Clematis plant that is climbing beautifully up the wall. Well actually it grows up some cords with the shape of a curtain.

Ahora si te das la vuelta y miras hacia el interior puedes ver esta bonita planta de muscari trepando por la pared. Bueno realmente trepa por unas cuerdas colgantes con forma de cortina.

La flor de clematis me resulta muy especial. Si miras hacia abajo puedes apreciar que en su macetero hay una cyclamen que está ofreciendo las últimas flores de la temporada....unas llegan y otras se van... así es el ciclo anual de las flores.

I find the Clematis flower to be very special. And now if you look down you can see a Cyclamen flower on the pot from which it is growing. Well you can see what is left of it since it is a winter flower...as some flowers come, other flowers go.. and that is their cycle every year.

I liked this perspective from up high, and I wondered what the opposite would look like, so I lied down on the floor and I looked up at the ceiling. You can see the guides I have set. There are three other climbing plants in the terrace and by the end of the summer they will be growing all over the ceiling. Every year I prune them and leave the thickest branches growing along the guides. I must remember to take this picture in three months time to see what it looks like!!

Me gustó la perspectiva desde lo alto, y me pregunté como sería a la inversa, así que me tumbé en el suelo y miré hacia el techo. Puedes ver las guías que he colocado. Hay otras tres plantas trepadoras en la terraza y todos los años voy podándolas. La idea es dejar las ramas más gruesas a lo largo de las guías. ¡Me tengo que acordar de repetir esta foto en unos tres meses para ver que pinta tiene, que seguro que el techo estará muy frondoso!

La foto anterior es interesante desde un punto de vista técnico...pero poco vistosa. Ahora te enseño una desde las misma perspectiva pero un poco más bonita, o por lo menos intenté hacerla más artística.

The last picture is interesting from a technical point of view. Here is the same view but I tried to give it a more artistic touch.

¡Hola de nuevo!! --- Hello there!!

I skipped a week of posting because it has been a little busy in my life. The thing I like about this time of the year is that my plants do not require much work. I had prepared all the pots between september and december, and now it is all about enjoying how they turn out.

So these pictures were taken last week in my Berry Balcony. As you come in and walk to the far left I have this nice combination. The Muscari are beautiful at this time of the year and they combine beautifully with Tulips that have just opened up.

Me salté la publicación habitual la semana pasada porque he tenido mucho ajetreo en mi vida. Lo que me gusta de esta época del año es que mis plantas no requieren mucha atención. Hice todo el trabajo de preparar las macetas entre septiembre y diciembre, y ahora se trata de disfrutar de los resultados.

Estas fotos son del Balcón de los Frutos Silvestres y las tomé la semana pasada. Si entras y giras al fondo a la izquierda verás esta bonita combinación. Los muscari violetas combinan muy bien con los tulipanes que se acaban de abrir.

El tiempo está un poco loco. Esta foto la tomé por la mañana y parecía que iba a ser un día soleado. ¡¡De hecho llegué un poco tarde al trabajo porque empecé a hacer fotos y me despisté un poco!!!

The weather is a bit crazy in this time of the year. Last Thursday I took some pictures in the morning before going to work. I was actually a bit late because I kind of lost track of time. It seemed like it was goint to be a lovely sunny day.

So I came home for lunch to continue the picture session, and look at how cloudy it was!!! Here you can see a whole bunch of tulips accompanied by the red anemone, and little bell like flowers called Leucojum.

Como había empezado con las fotos por la mañana, me vine a casa a comer para continuar la sesión. ¡¡Para entonces el día estaba totalmente nublado!!! Aquí tienes unos cuantos tulipanes acompañados de las anemone rojas y unas pequeñas campanillas llamadas Leucojum.

En esta foto puedes apreciar mucho mejor lo bonitas que son las campanillas Leucojum.

And in this one you can appreciate the beauty of the little bell like flowers called Leucojum.

I always like to show the balcony with some perspective. So taking a stept back from the last picture, here you have a shot of the balcony looking from the far left towards the right. This is one of the best moments of the year, it is very colourful!!!

Siempre me gusta enseñar una foto con algo de perspectiva, para ofrecer una idea del conjunto del balcón. Así que dando un paso para atrás desde la foto anterior, aquí se ve el balcón desde la izquierda y mirando hacia la derecha. Este es uno de los momentos más bonitos del año, ¡¡está lleno de color!! :)

Me despido con esta foto de los dos maceteros que están justo al fondo a la derecha. He tenido una sorpresa este año con las flores naranjas, que creo que son unas iris. No lo tengo muy claro porque el año pasado no florecieron me había olvidado por completo de ellas. De vez en cuando las plantas necesitan un tiempo para adaptarse y te dan la sorpresa a los dos años!!!

So I will say goodbye with these two pots that are at the far end of the balcony. I had a surprise with those orange flowers. I believe they are some type of Iris but I am not sure. Last year they did not grow any flowers and I had completely forgotten about them. So it just shows you that sometimes plants might need an entire year to adapt to their life on a pot, and then you give you a surprise two years later !!!!

This past Monday, right before going to work, I walked out into the Berry Balcony and I discovered the first tulips of the year. The early morning sun was starting to shine on them and they were just opening up. I thouthg it would make a nice picture to welcome spring.

Este lunes antes de ir al trabajo salí un momento al Balcón de los Frutos Silvestres y descubrí los primeros tulipanes del año. Se estaban abriendo bajo el sol de la mañana, y pensé que hacían una buena foto para dar la bienvenida a la primavera.

Al darme la vuelta aprecié que efectivamente, ya ha llegado la primavera:)

So when I turned around I realized that indeed, spring has arrived :)

Bye Bye Winter --- Adiós invierno adiós

¡Hola de nuevo! --- Hello there!

Well the last weekend of winter was incredibly sunny and the plants in my West faced terrace are starting to wake up!! Here we have two lovely Hyacinths surrounded by Daffodils.

El último fin de semana del invierno ha sido muy soleado y las plantas de mi terraza orientada al Oeste se están despertando. Aquí un par de jacintos acompañados por unos cuantos narcisos.

Me gustan estas flores rosas que se ven echando un vistazo al macetero de la izquierda. Todavía no he descubierto cómo se llaman, pero les haré un seguimiento esta primavera pues si se comportan igual que el año pasado, crecerán de forma increíble.

Taking a look on the left, I want to show you these little pink flowers. I still don't know how they are called but if they behave like last year, they will grow very fast during spring time.

Taking a step back you can see the two pots I am taking pictures of.

Echando un paso hacia atrás, puedes ver los dos maceteros que estoy fotografiando.

Esas plantas que parecen como pelo colgando son muscari, y tienen estas flores moradas.

Those plants that look like hanging hair are muscari, and they have these little purple flowers.

And now if we turn around we can see the last sunrays of the day on this corner. On the pot is a Cyclamen plant, that has given me some nice flowers throughout the winter. As you can see the climbing plant is growing nicely. It is a Clematis and in this part of the year it is quite happy because it gets these direct sun rays right before sunset. It is budding already and I hope to have some flowers on the wall pretty soon.

Ahora si nos damos la vuelta podemos ver este macetero en la esquina. La planta de abajo es un cyclamen que me ha animado el balcón con su floración invernal. La planta trepadora es una clematis y en esta época del año crece con mucho vigor pues le sienta muy bien este ratito de luz directa antes de la puesta de sol. Ya tiene algunos capullitos ¡¡ así que espero pronto tener flores en las paredes !!

¡Marzo ha llegado con una explosión de color en mi balcón este!

March has arrived with an explosion of colour in my East Balcony!

So let me show you some more frontal views. This is what I see when I open the bedroom doors. It's a nice way to start the day :)

Te enseño ahora un par de vistas frontales. Esto es lo que veo cuando abro las puertas de mi cuarto. Es una buena manera de empezar el día :)

Y mirando hacia la izquierda tengo estas maceteras en las que destacan las anemone rojas.

And looking to the left you can see how those red anemone really catch your eye.

Come inside with me for a little look. It's the little details that I like. As you see I have different types of daffodils in all the pots. It is a nice bulb that grows easily and kind of combines well with any type of flowers.

Entra conmigo en el balcón y echemos un vistazo, que son los pequeños detalles los que me gusta enseñar. Como ves he puesto muchos narcisos, que crecen bien y pegan con todas las flores.

En una de las maceteras he plantado muchos anemoene. Las flores vienen con diferentes formas y me llama mucho la atención esta que tiene muchos pétalos.

I have this one pot where I remember planting in fall a whole bunch of anemone bulbs. The flowers come in many different shapes. I like these ones that have lots of petals.

If we walk to the end of the balcony you can see another combination, this time the daffodil is accompanied by two hyacinths. These are lovely flowers with an incredibly nice smell.

Si andamos al fondo del balcón vemos otra combinación del narciso, esta vez acompañado de dos jacintos. Esta flor me encanta porque huele de maravilla.

Me despido con una foto de esta esquina y un truco sencillo que me aprendí en la escuela de fotografía. Primero un zoom del jacinto.

So let me say goodbye with a little trick I learnt recently. First let me show this close-up of the hycaninth on the left.

And now, changing the focus in the same picture, take a look at the nice muscari flower in the right.

To prune or not to be prune, that is the question --- Podar o no podar, esa es la cuestión

Tras los meses de invierno más lluviosos que recuerdo, por fin ha salido el sol! En Madrid cuando sale el sol....lo hace de verdad y estamos a 20 ºC con una sensación casi de verano. Asi que no pude ya posponer el momento de podar este geranio, que llevo todo el invierno pensando en ello.

Como puedes ver en la foto, estaba algo necesitado de cuidados.

After the rainiest winter months that I remember, the sun has come out this weekend. Now in Madrid when the sun shines, it shines!!! It was 20 ºC today and the feeling is of absolute springtime. So yesterday I figured it was about time I pruned this geranium. I had been postponing it all winter along. As you can see in this picture, the pot does need some taking care of.

Besides being a little lazy, I was also trying a little experiment. The plant in the middle is a Dragonaria. It grows really well on my other terrace that is less windy but I have not been able to grow it on this one. So I figured that if it was covered up and protected by the geranium it would survive well during wintertime. It was just an idea but it seems to have worked for this first winter! Let's see now how it holds on for the rest of spring and summer, So here you have the pot after some pruning.

Aparte de haber sido un poco vago, hice la poda tan tarde en el año por un pequeño experimento. La planta que ves en el centro es una dragonaria. Se me da muy bien en la otra terraza que tiene menos viento, pero en esta les cuesta sobrevivir. Así que me imaginé que si estaba cubierta y protegida por el geranio, aguantaría bien el invierno. De momento ha funcionado, ahora veremos como aguante en primavera y verano. Bueno y esta es la foto después de la poda.

Echando un vistazo al tronco puedes ver como poco a poco empieza a tener pinta de planta con algunos años.

If we take a closer look the trunk is starting to look like that of a nice old plant.

And now to the title of this post, To prune or not to prune, that is the question. Well let me answer with a little example. This is a little stem I cut off. If you look at the leaves they seem pretty healthy, but take a look at those littel holes in the center.

Sobre el título de esta publicación, Podar o no podar, esa es la cuestión....deja que te responda con un ejemplo. Fíjate en esta ramita que he cortado. Las hojas están verdes y parecen sanas, pero fíjate en los puntos negros en el centro.

Si hacemos un corte entre los dos puntos negros, puedes ver que el centro de la rama está muerto. Esto lo ha causado una oruga que le encantan los geranios y es una verdadera plaga para ellos. El caso es que esta rama nunca habría crecido mucho más porque la savia sencillamente no atraviesa bien esa parte.

If we cut right between the two dark spots, you can see that the inside of the stem is simply dead. This was caused by a caterpillar that just loves geranium plants. It is a real plague! So this would have never grown much because the sap simply cannot get across that dead part of the stem.

So this answers the question, you always have to prune your plants once a year. Cut off any parts that are not healthy and don't worry because the plant will just grow bigger and stronger in springtime.

For me the pruning is a relaxing moment. I concentrate on how I am going to leave the thickest branches as guides for the plant to grow. I kind of just forget about the world that surrounds me for a little while. Remember the movie Karate Kid when they imagine what the bonzai tree is going to look like and it just seems like a magical moment? Well for me it is just the same :)

Así que esto responde la pregunta, sí, hay que podar las plantas todos los años. De esta forma retiramos las partes que no están sanas y dejamos la oportunidad a que la planta crezca con fuerza en primavera.

Para mí la poda es un momento de relajación. Me concentro en como voy a dejar las ramas más gruesas como guías para el crecimiento de la planta y durante un rato me olvido del mundo que me rodea. ¿Recuerdas la película de Karate Kid, cuando se imagina el bonzai en su cabeza y luego se pone a podarlo y parece un momento mágico? Pues es algo parecido :)
