¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!! --- Hello there !!!

Esta primavera en el post sobre los narcisos te hacía una promesa. Te hablaba de como mi terraza es un santuario de paz y tranquilidad para mí. Es un lugar en el que me gusta recogerme todos los días para sentir un momento de relajación espiritual. Las decoraciones de la terraza tienen un significado y una historia detrás. Te hablaba en ese post de la salamanquesa y las noches de cena con mis abuelos en Altea, y te enseñé esta foto de un capullo de clematis, y te prometía que te contaría la historia de la decoración del fondo.

This spring I made you a promise. It was in the post about daffodils (or narcissus) that I talked about my terrace as a special place for me, kind of a sancturay of peace. It really is my special place, and every day I like to have my five minutes of spiritual relaxation there. The decorations on the terrace walls all have a special meaning. I was telling you about the big lizard we call 'salamanquesa' and how when I had dinner with my grandparents at their terrace in Altea we would wait for them to come out and watch them catch insects while we talked at the dinner table. Well I showed you this clematis flower bud and promised to tell you the story of the decoration behind.

Hace algunos años de esta historia. A veces me parece que fue ayer, y a veces me parece que ocurrió hace siglos. Mi mujer y yo llevábamos un año casados. Igual que cuando éramos novios, seguíamos hablando de tener hijos como un suceso inevitable pero diluido en el futuro, sin concretar cuando ocurriría. Así que preparé un viaje sorpresa a Sicilia. No le dije nada a Ana, simplemente compré los billetes y reservé los hoteles. Fue muy divertido pues solo sabía que íbamos a un sitio cálido y descubrió el destino al llegar al aeropuerto.

La época romana siempre me ha fascinado. Toda Europa unida con una misma moneda y un idioma común....mmmm la historia parece cíclica verdad?! El caso es que siempre había querido visitar las ruinas de una villa romana. En el pueblo de Piazza Armenina se encuentra la 'villa romana del casale' que tiene unos mosáicos increibles. El baldosín es un recuerdo que compramos del día de la visita, y aquí tienes una bonita foto que tomé en mayo 2005 en las ruinas de la villa romana.

It has been some time since this story. Well sometimes it feels like it happened yesterday, and sometimes it feels like it happened ages ago. My wife and I had been married for a year. We kept on speaking of having kids just like we did when we were going out: it was eventually going to happen in a far away and diffuse future. So I prepared a surprise trip to Sicily. Ana had no idea where we were going, she only knew that it was a warm place. It was great fun!! She found out the destination at the airport when we got in line for boarding!!!!

I have always been fascinated about the roman times. All of Europe united under the same rule, same coin and same language...mmm history is kind of cyclic isn't it ?. Anyways I had always wanted to visit a roman villa. At this town called Piazza Armerina they have this 'villa romana del Casale'. It has some incredibly well conserved mosaics. The tile with a roman picture was bought right outside the villa, and here is a nice picture I took in may 2005 right there.

Si alguna vez vas a Sicilia yo te recomiendo esta visita pues es sencillamente espectacular. Nosotros dormimos en un hotel rural que se llama http://www.lacasasullac ollinadoro.it/ y te dejo el vínculo pues acabo de ver que siguen activos. El hotel está genial y fíjate que vista más bonita teniamos desde la habitación.

Sicilia en mayo es precioso. Nos sorprendió que al viajar por las montañas del interior nos parecía que estábamos en Suiza. ¡¡¡ Estaba todo verde y el campo estaba lleno de flores de todos loscolores !!!. Íbamos en coche y lo paramos para tomar esta foto, y es que ya entonces le tenía a mi mujer loca con esto de fotografiar flores por todas partes :)

Bueno pues en el viaje hablamos mucho de comenzar una nueva etapa en nuestra vida y tomamos la decisión por fin de evitar ese momento difuso en el futuro y hacerlo claro en el presente. Si has sido padre sabes a lo que me refiero, ese vértigo tan genial cuando decides intentar por fin formar parte real del ciclo de la vida.

Sicily in May is beautiful. We were quite surprised with te mountains we travelled through. They were so green, so full of flowers we felt like we were in Switzerland.!! I stopped the car to take this nice picture, as you see I have been driving my wife crazy with flowers for a long time !!!

Well in this trip we talked a lot about starting a new phase in our lives. We decided to turn that diffuse and far away moment and bring it clearly into the present. If you are a parent you know what I am talking about, that scary excitement of finally deciding to try to become a real part of the cycle of life.

La siguiente foto es en la casa en la que vivíamos antes de venirnos a la actual. Vivíamos en un cuarto piso y teníamos un alféizar en la ventana de la cocina que daba a un patio interior. Para mí fue todo un reto mantener mis plantas con tan poca luz. Aquí están mis dos reinas entre mis flores, allá por el verano del 2007. Las flores amarillas las conoces de sobra, son las lilium que florecen al final de todas las primaveras en mi balcón. A la pequeñaja del chupete también la conoces, la has visto de mayor recogiendo frambuesas con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja. En la parte alta del marco hay una planta verde, es un jazmín que crecía por guiado por el marco de la ventana.

The next picture is taken at the house we lived at before moving into our actual home. We lived in a fourth floor and had this little window sill in the kitchen. Quite a challenge to grow plants when there is not much light. Here are my two queens hiding behind my flowers, in summer of 2007. The yellow flowers you know quite well, they are the lilium that grow on my balconies every late spring. The little one with a soother in her mouth you know quite well tooo, you have seen her a little older holding raspberries we pick from our balcony, with a big smile on her face. The plant that is growing around the window is a jasmine plant.

Al año siguiente el jazmín estaba bien hermoso y me regaló unas flores que hacían las maravillas de nuestras mañanas. No hay como tomarse un café en tu casa de ciudad respirando la fragancia de las flores de jazmín recién abiertas. La foto está tomada desde otra ventana que también tenía un macetero lleno de plantas. A este le daba menos el sol, pero fue cuando descubrí al ciclamen, la flor roja que tienes al fondo de la imagen, que estaba muy a gusto con poca luz directa.

The next year the jasmine was looking great and gave us some wonderful flowers. There is nothing like having a morning coffe in your kitchen while reading the paper and smelling the fragance of jasmine flowers :) This picture is taken from another window, where you can see we also put a nice pot on the window sill. This is when I discovered that cyclamen go well without much light.

Este soy yo, al salir de la villa romana en el viaje a Sicilia que cambió nuestras vidas. En esta foto estoy lleno de ilusión imaginando lo que me depararía el futuro. Ahora me siento igual. Este blog forma parte de un proyecto personal de mayor envergadura. Si me has seguido supongo que ya te lo imaginas un poco. El caso es que antes de seguir adelante quería pasar de ser un aficionado a lo más parecido a un profesional. Todavía me queda mucho por aprender, pero tengo confianza suficiente como para lanzarme al vació, igual que cuando tomé esta foto. Han pasado siete años, pero por dentro me siento muy parecido.

This is me right after leaving the villa in Sicily, on the trip that changed our lifes. In this picture I am happy and excited, wondering what the future would bring us. Right now I feel the same. This blog is part of a bigger personal project I have been working on for two years now. I imagine you have guessed it by now. The reason for all of this is I wanted to take the step from being an amateur to a bit more of a proffesional. I feel like I still have a lot to learn but I feel confident now for the next steps I would like to take. It has been seven years since this picture, but inside I feel just the same.

Me despido por un tiempo pero no sé cuanto. Voy a seguir trabajando en mi proyecto y requiere todo mi poco tiempo disponible. En la derecha del blog hay un gadget que si apuntas tu correo te avisa con la publicación del siguiente post. Te regalo este documento. ¡¡¡ Es lo más parecido a un libro que voy a escribir en mi vida !!!! Se trata de todos los posts que he publicado. Tienes ahí la vida de las plantas de una terraza durante un año y medio y las locuras de un jardinero urbano. ¡¡¡ Espero que te guste !!!

So I am saying goodbye for now. I don't know for how long. I have to keep on working on my project and it needs all the time I can spend on it. On the right of the blog there is this gadget where you can sign up and it will send you a message on the next post I publish. Oh and I have prepared this document which is the closest I will ever come to writing a book. For now it is only in Spanish sorry. It is simply all of the posts together. So you have like a year and a half of the lives of plants on a balcony. I hope you like it.!!!!!

De verano a otoño -- Summer to fall

¡¡ Hola de nuevo!!! -- Hello there!!!

El verano siempre es una prueba dura para mis plantas. Madrid tiene un clima muy seco y en muchos días de julio y agosto la temperatura supera los 35ºC. Además me voy tres semanas de vacaciones con lo que no estoy pendiente de ellas. Dejo las plantas lo más resguardadas posibles y alguien me las riega cada dos días. A la vuelta siempre están algo estropeadas y suelo sufrir alguna baja. La planta que estaba en mejor estado era mi buganvilla, fíjate que color tienen sus flores.

Summer is always a tough test for my plants. Madrid has a pretty dry climate and on many days in July and August the temperature hits 35ºC. I leave for three weeks also and I have somenone water them for me every two or three days. So when I come back they are not in a great shape and I always loose one or two of them. However check out this beautiful bougainvillea flower.

Claro que al no estar pendiente, pues te crece de todo en las macetas. De todas formas me gusta de vez en cuando dejar las 'malas hierbas'. No sé si recuerdas un post sobre un prado semisalvaje en una fábrica alemana que hice este verano. Si una mala hierba es bonita, pues porque no dejarla ahí? :)

Of course and not being at home during my holidays I get all type of weeds growing on my pots. However I kind of like them sometimes. You might remember this post I did on a half wild yard at this German manufacturing plant this summer. If it is a weed but it looks nice, might as well leave it there right?!

Otra cosa que te ocurre cuando te vas es que las plagas te atacan las plantas, y no estás para remediarlo. Por ejemplo en esta flor de clematis tan bonita, puedes apreciar como las hojitas tienen puntitos blancos.

Something else that happens is the plants will get attacked by bugs and I am not there to take action. The clematis had this nice flower but you can see on the leaves all these little white spots.

De todas formas no soy muy amigo de recurrir a pesticidas. Me he planteado como reto para el 2012 dedicarme a investigar sobre remedios caseros y naturales para luchar contra las plagas que atacan las plantas. Yo este año he tenido bastantes, pero solo recurro al pesticida cuando la cosa se pone difícil y veo que la planta se encuentra en estado crítico. Es que sencillamente no me gusta por que me da la sensación de estar envenenando al resto de insectos que andan por ahí(si bien no tengo base científica para esta afirmación). Fíjate en esta sorpresa, vivo en un quinto piso y me encontré con este inmenso saltamontes descansando entre mis plantas. A mis hijos les fascinan este tipo de visitantes. Si le da un par de mordisquitos a alguna de mis plantas y he echado pesticida, pues digo yo que le sentará mal :(

However I am not crazy about using pesticides. I have this objective for 2012 to investigate on natural ways of getting rid of bugs. This year I have had a few and normally I don't use them until the plant is in a pretty critical state. I just have this feeling I am poisoning all other bugs that live around the plants, like bees (I have no scientific base for this 'feeling' though) For example check out this nice surprise visit we had. My kids were impressed with this grasshopper we found in our plants on our fifth floor!!! I think that if he takes a bite or two of any of the plants he will get a little food poisoning if I use pesticides :(

Bueno pues te enseño mi balcón oeste en el mes de octubre, después de hacer unos arreglos. Nos fuimos al vivero y compramos unas cuantas plantas de temporada que incorporé allá donde algunas plantas de temporada se habián muerto, o había sufrido alguna baja tras el verano.

Anyways let me show you around my West balcony after I did some repairing after our summer holidays.

As you walk in, these two pots are on the right corner.

Yo en otoño siempre repoblo con pensamientos (que aguantarán hasta el próximo verano) y con tagetes (que solo aguantarán hasta el inicio del invierno). En esta maceta de la esquina de la derecha los puedes ver. La planta del centro que tiene muchos tallos es una muscaria, planta bulbosa que ha estado bajo tierra todo el verano y que empieza ya a asomar y tendrá flores violetas a finales de invierno.

Every fall I fill in for any missing plants with pansies (that will survive until next summer) and with marigold (that won't make it past winter). Here you have them both. Oh and in the center a muscari plant. This is a bulb plant, so it has been resting underground all summer and now is starting to grow. It should be giving beautiful purple flowers at the end of winter.

No me cansaré nunca de los pensamientos, los hay de todas las combinaciones de colores y de tamaños grande y pequeña.

I just never get tired of pansies. They come in all combinations of colours and in big and small sized flowers.

Dando un paso hacia detrás, te encuentras con esta planta que es nueva para mí este año. Estábamos en el vivero, que a mi pequeña le encanta ayudarme a escoger flores de colores bonitas, y mi mujer la vió y la pidió para nuestra terraza. No recuerdo el nombre pero se ha adaptado de maravilla. Tiene muchas flores de diferentes colores, así que para el otoño va perfecta. Requiere poca agua así que procuro regar en su lado de la maceta un poquito menos.

Well if you step back now you see this plant which is new for me this year. We were at the plant store and my little one was helping me choose the pansies when my wife saw this plant. I am sorry I don't know its name. It has many different coloured flowers and it has adapted wonderfully to the balcony. It needs little water so I make sure I water less on this side of the pot. To add just a touch of colour I planted a pansy with purlple and small flowers on the back. It is a little taller and stands out. On the picture the flowers are a bit blurry, but you get the idea.

Dando un paso hacia atrás, ¡¡¡ se ve colorido verdad!!!

Taking a step back here is a colourful picture of the right corner.

Y dando un paso más hacia atrás, se aprecia mucho colorido en la terraza. Para que luego pensemos que en otoño solo caben el amarillo y naranja de las hojas que se caen de los árboles verdad ? :) En primera fila un pensamiento tricolor de flor pequeña.

And taking yet another step back, you can really appreciate the variety of colour here. Who says in fall it is all about yellow and orange colours of fallen leaves ? :) The plant in first line is a three coloured pansy of small flower.

Para terminar una foto de la parte izquierda de la terraza. Tuve una baja importante en mi romero de tres años, que no sobrevivió las tres semanas de mi ausencia. Curiosamente fue por resguardarlo demasiado del sol...en fin no se deja de aprender nunca. Siempre bajo las macetas al suelo cuando me voy de vacaciones, para que no sea necesario regar a diario...pero al romero eso de recibir menos luz no le ha gustado nada. En su lugar he plantado un brezo que me regalaron unos amigos del trabajo y que es una planta preciosa y florece en otoño. Se pueden apreciar los tagetes amarilos y naranjas y no se ven bien pero al fondo tengo también pensamientos amarillos.

Ok and let's turn around now and finish with a picture of the left end of the terrace. I was really sorry to loose my three year old rosemary this summer. You just never stop learning about plants. When I leave on holidays I always take down the plants and put them on the floor because they won't get watered every day. However the rosemary needs a lot of direct burning sunlight. So it was unhappy and died on me. Last year I had the same accident with my lavender plant. I wonder if I will learn the lesson for next summer......Well I substituted it with the red flowered plant that some friends from work bought me for my birthday in September. In Spanish it is called brezo and belongs to the heather family, but I can't figure out it's name in English, sorry about that. You can also see some yellow marigold and just barely some yellow pansies in the back.

El jardín urbano de Isis -- The urban garden of Isis

¡¡Hola de nuevo!! --- Hello there!!!

Supongo que nos tiramos la vida luchando o trabajando para cumplir nuestros sueños....Hice un pequeño experimento de venta en mi barrio. Preparé este anuncio en el que le comunicaba a mis vecinos que si querían un maravilloso jardín urbano, pues no había más que llamarme. Una noche helada de invierno salí a colocarlos por todas partes. A la mañana siguiente no quedaba ni uno..arghhh!!! Es que en Madrid tenemos un servicio de limpieza super eficiente!!! Bueno pues durante un par de semanas yo colocaba los anuncios y los barrenderos de la ciudad diligentemente me los arrancaban....hasta que quedaron algunos sueltos que ya no quitaban. Recuerdas la teoría de Darwin, que los animales con mejor camuflaje no son cazados frente a los que tienen peor camuflaje y por eso tienen descendencia? Pues eso. Así que puse los carteles y a esperar alguna llamada......

I guess we spend all our life fighting or working hard to see our dreams fulfilled....I tried out this little marketing experiment in my neighbourhood. I prepared this nice addvertising paper where I invited neighbours to call me if they wanted a nice urban garden. I went out on a freezing winter night and pasted it all over the place. The next morning they had all dissapeared!!!! We have a very efficient clean up service in Madrid you see. arghh!!!!! So for one or two weeks I would paste them all over and then slowly some of them were left untouched. Ever hear of Darwin's evolution theory? how animals that blend in their environment will be the most succesfull in breeding because other preying animals will find it harder to hunt them than those that stand out? Well pasting an add in the city is something similar, in most places they are cleaned up, but in one or two corners they remain untouched. So I waited for a call.

¡¡¡ Que alegría cuando me llamó mi vecina Isis !!!! Fui a su casa y me enseñó su terraza. Esta es la vista al entrar y mirar a la izquierda.

It made me very happy when my neighbour Isis called me in spring time!!!!! I went over to her house and she showed me her terrace. This is the view as you walk in and turn to the left.

Si te das la vuelta y miras a la derecha te encuentras con una terraza alargada y con mucho espacio. Bastante soleada también.

And if you turn around and look to the right this is what you see. A nice long terrace with lots of space. It gets a lot of sun too.

Me llevé a casa este geranio que estaba medio muerto. Los geranios son geniales, plantas preciosas y a la vez resistentes. Estoy bastante orgulloso, ¡fíjate como lo he resucitado!

I took home this geranium she had that was half dead. I am quite proud of this. Geranium plants are great, they are beautiful and they are tough. Check out how I brought it back to life.

Recuperar una planta moribunda implica dos pasos muy básicos y sencillos. El primero es regar bien y situar en un lugar luminoso con poco sol directo. Lo segundo es recortar las hojas y ramas secas. En esta foto puedes ver la planta una vez arreglada. (yo esperé unos días después de empezar a regar)

Bringing a plant back to life is an easy two step procedure. First you place where it gets good sunlight, but not too directly and very basic and important, you water it. Second you cut off all the dead or half dead leaves (you might want to wait a few days for this)

Mira que hermoso está un par de semanas después. Se aprecian muchas hojitas nuevas creciendo, señal de que se está recuperando.

Check it out two weeks later. With some water and being placed in a nice environment, it already has new small leaves growing everywhere.

Aquí está ya en un macetero en la casa de Isis. ¡¡¡ Está tan sano que parece que viene directo del vivero!!

Here you have it later on, once I planted it in one of the pots at Isis's house. It looks healthy like it came straight from the store doesn't it?

Estas dos fotos están tomadas en mi casa. Tenía todos los maceteros preparados y listos para llevárselos a Isis. El fin de semana anterior hicimos una fiesta en casa. Me día cuenta que era una pena no aprovecharlos para decorar también mi terraza!!! así que aquí hay un par de fotos, 'alquilando' las plantas de Isis antes de llevárselas :)

These two pictures are taken at my house the week before taking the plants over to Isis's house. We had this big party at home and I had already prepared all the pots and then I realized that they looked great that it was a pitty not to add them on with mine at the terrace for the party!!!!!

Vamos ya a la casa de Isis con la instalación completa. Esta es la vista entrando y mirando hacia la izquierda. Verás que lo primero que hicimos fue colocar un bambú igualito al que tengo yo. ¡¡¿¿Creo que mejora bastante verdad?!!

Ok well let's go to Isis's house now. Here you have a view of the terrace as you look to the left. She liked the idea of using a bamboo fence like the one I have. I agree it gives a cozy feeling.

¡¡¡Si te das la vuelta y miras a la derecha tienes todas estas plantas!!!

If you turn around this is the view to the right.

Al fondo a la derecha puse bambú cubriendo la separación con la casa de al lado. Al suelo dos trepadoras. Una planta de clematis, que dará unas flores preciosas y un jazmín falso. En la maceta redonda hay un frambueso rodeado de plantas de temporada: petunias y tagetes.

At the far right end we put bamboo all the way up on the separation with her neighbouring house. I have put two climbing plants here. One of them is a clematis, like the one at my place that has beautiful flowers. The other climbing plant is called commonly false jasmine. On the bottom a little experiment with a pot that has a raspberry plant and is surrounded by nice petunias and marygold.

Este es un zoom de la flor del jazmín falso (Trachelospermum jasminoides). No tengo experiencia con ella pero veo esta planta por todas partes en Madrid. Parece que resiste bastante bien y su flor tiene una fragancia que se hace notar, lo cual se agradece en la ciudad :)

This is a close up of the false jasmine flower.(Trachelospermum jasminoides) I see it a lot in Madrid. Apparently it is quite resistant and it has a very nice strong fragance, which is something you are thankful for when you live in a city.

Te enseño los maceteros uno a uno. Isis no tenía experiencia con las plantas así que decidimos poner plantas bien resistentes y que no requieran especiales cuidados. Hay dos tipos de plantas, las que durarán varios años, y las de temporada. Las duraderas son dos lavandas al centro y los geranios de los laterales. Las de temporada son las petunias rojas y violetas y los tagetes naranjas.

Let's take a look at the pots one by one. Isis has absolutely no gardening experience so we decided upon resistant plants and not particularily fancy. Here we have a combination of plants that will last many years and plants that will probably last until winter. Long term plants are geranium on the sides and two lavender in the center. Short term plantas are the red and violet petunias and yellow marigold.

Aquí vemos de nuevo geranios y lavanda. Esta vez hay otra planta duradera que es el alyssum, que si crece bien colgará con elegancia del macetero. Como plantas de temporada, el tagete naranja y las petunias rosas.

Again we have geranium on the sides and lavender on the center. It is hard to appreciate but in the center and with the idea to hang from the pot are two alyssum plants. Then again the colour is given by marigold and petunias.

La única planta algo delicada es la salvia de las flores moradas y altas. No sé que tal se dará con tanta luz directa, o como aguantará el invierno. Las mías son delicadas y sufren en invierno, pero se recuperan en primavera. Hay un par de santolinas, que huelen de maravilla y un para de geranios. Como plantas de temporada, están los tagetes amarillos y narjanjas, y las petunias violetas.

The only fancy plant she has are the salvia in the centre with the tall violet flowers. They are a little delicate and I am not sure how they will do under such sunny conditions. The rest are santolina (which smells great), geranium and alysum as long term plants. The colourful violet petunia, yellow and orange marigold will probably not last past the winter.

Estos tres maceteros tienen un diseño similar. Es curioso porque la planta de la izquierda que es una calibrochoa se está dando bien en solo un de los tres maceteros. Tenemos santolinas y lavandas acompañadas de geranios.

These three pots all have the same design. The flowers on the left are calibrochoa, and for some reason they are only doing well in one of the pots. The centre plantas are santolina and lavender, and then geranium on the side. Oh and some yellow marigold too.

Este es mi favorito por el contraste de color entre amarillo y violeta.

Here is another pot with violet salvia again. This pot is my favourite because of the yellow-violet contrast.

Aquí un poco de todo, con mucha petunia al centro.

This one has again a bit of everything.

Me despido con esta bonita imagen de la terraza. Bueno y un agradecimiento especial a Isis porque el día de la instalación se me murió la bateria de la cámara y luego me envió amablemente fotos de la terraza. Si estás leyendo esto Isis y has sufrido alguna baja en verano, pues te propongo que compres pensamientos, y que los plantes en los huecos. Los pensamientos salen a la venta en otoño, te aguantarán el invierno y en primavera se pondrán espectaculares :) ¡¡ Ah sí, y muchas gracias por llamarme !!! espero que disfrutéis de la terraza :)

Well let's say goodbye with a nice overall view of the terrace. I want to thank Isis because my camera died on me the day I installed the plants and she kindly took some pictures on her own and sent them to me. By the way Isis, if you are reading this by any chance and any of the plants have not survived well the summer, you might be interested in buying some pansies to fill up any holes. The pansies should survive throughout winter and will look great in springtime. Oh and Isis, thanks a lot for calling me!!!!! I hope you guys enjoy the terrace!!! :)

¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo!!! --- Hello there!!!!

Como te comentaba en mi anterior post, celebré mis 40 con un viaje al Reino Unido. Pasamos el viernes en Henley y el sábado nos encontramos con viejos amigos en Oxfordshire. Mi amigo Dave y yo estudiamos juntos en el instituto, coincidiamos en clases de física y química....sí efectivamente los clásicos pringuis de ciencias. Bueno pues fuimos a su casa en Oxfordshire donde su mujer Ivana tiene un jardín precioso. Realmente merece la pena verlo, acompañame a dar un paseo :) !!!!

Lo siento por la calidad de las fotos. Bueno al entrar tienen esta fuente en la derecha y el borde de la casa está decorada con una bonita variedad de plantas.

As I was telling you in my last post, I celebrated turning 40 with a great long weekend in the UK. We spent Friday at Henley and Saturday we met up with some old friends in Oxfordshire. My buddy Dave and I used to go to high school together, we were together in Physics and Chemistry class...yeah you guessed it all right we were science geeks!!! Anyways we went over to his place in Oxfordshire and his wife Ivana showed me their garden. I tell you it is really something. Please come with me for a look!!!

Sorry for the quality of the pictures. On the right is a small fountain and you can see a rich variety of plants along the house.

Si andamos a lo largo de la pared y nos damos la vuelta, ahora las plantas se ven más de cerca. Al fondo a la izquierda está la fuente que no sale en la foto.

Dando la vuelta a la esquina llegamos a su jardín propiamente dicho. Ivana lo tiene todo de maravilla. Me encanta este pequeño huerto rodeado de plantas ornamentales. Una solución muy elegante. Normalmente el huerto tiene poco atractivo visual, pero si lo rodeas con estos tagetes de tonalidades amarillo y naranja y queda muy bonito. Acabo de leer en el Wikipedia que además la planta tagete mantiene alejadas ciertos insectos que atacan los vegetales, y que se suele usar en pequeños huertos.

As you keep walking around the house we reach the lawn. Here Ivana has this beautiful centre of plants. She has all these vegetables growing and they are sourrounded by marigold flowers. An elegant solution. I like the idea because normally vegetable plants are not that fancy looking, so like this you have it all, food and beauty !!! Oh and I just read on Wikipedia that these flowers are said to repel harmful insects and are normally used for accompanying vegetables.

Era una tarde soleada en Inglaterra, tomando café y paseando por el jardín de Ivana. Lo pasamos de maravilla, y maravillados quedamos con estas judías verdes que estaban riquísimas:)

It was a wonderful sunny afternoon in the UK, we were having a coffee, walking around the garden and eating Ivana's green beans fresh from the plants :)n!! A very nice day indeed.

Andando un poco más al fondo, la envidia de cualquier jardinero urbano: ¡¡un arbol frutal en tu propia casa!!! Este es un peral, pero no pudimos probar las peras porque todavía no estaban maduras.

Walking down the left of the garden, a city gardener's deepest wish, to be able to grow a fruit tree in your house!!!! Oh I envy that deeply. Here is lovely pear tree, unfortunately they were not ripe yet so we could eat any.

Pero con lo que nos pusimos las botas fue con las frambuesas. No lo sabía pero hay dos tipos de plantas, las que dan fruto a finales de primavera, que son las que tengo en mi terraza en Madrid, y las que dan fruto a finales de verano, aquí presentes.

However we had a feast on these!!!. Apparently there are raspberry plants that may give fruit in late spring, these are the ones I have growing on my terrace, or they may grow fruit in late summmer, and these are the ones that Ivana has.

Fíjate que cosecha!!! No estoy seguro si al compararlas con las galletas se aprecia el enorme tamaño de las frambuesas. Sin exagerar son el doble de las que cultivo en mi casa en Madrid. ¡¡¡¡ Estaban riquísimas también !!!!!

Now check this out!!! I am not sure if you can tell by comparing them to the cookies, but these raspberries are homongous. They are much bigger than the ones I grow on my terrace in Madrid I can tell you for sure, and they were delicious too :)

Estas dos fotos muestran la terraza que da al jardín. La tienen rodeada de una enorme y equilibrada variedad de bonitas flores.

These two pictures show different views of the terrace they have looking towards the big lawn. They have it surrounded with a beautifully balanced combination of flowers.

Me llamaron especialemente la atención estas fucsias. He intentado crecerlas en Madrid sin éxito. Me parece una flor muy elegante, muy especial. Ivana tiene a lo largo de la casa tres arbustos grandes que están sencillamente espectaculares.

I was specially impressed by the fuchsia plants. I find it is a very elegant, very special flower. I have tried to grow these in Madrid but was not quite succesful. She has three big plants and they are simply impressive.

Rodeando la terraza tienen estos maceteros, que ya me recuerdan más al tipo de jardinería al que estoy acostumbrado a hacer en la ciudad. Una muy bonita y colorida variedad de anemone animan el café con pastas de chocolate y frambuesa que disfrutamos depués de nuestro paseo por el jardín.

Surrounding the terrace are all these nice pots, now this is more like what I am used to growing. A very colourful variety of anemone made our coffe with chocolate cookies and raspberries a lovely experience.

Para despedirme, un ejemplo de como la naturaleza a veces insiste en demostrarnos que es preciosa por si sola, sin necesitar la mano del hombre. En este rinconcito de la terraza le crecen estas bonitas flores violetas de forma totalmente natural. ¡¡¡ Que rincón más bonito !!!

To say goodbye, an example of how sometimes nature just insists on being beautiful all by itself. On a corner of the terrace, they have these little violet flowers that just grow out of nowhere!!

¡¡¡Hola de nuevo!!! --- Hello there!!!!!

Ya he vuelto de las vacaciones. Bueno volví a finales de agosto pero es que septiembre ha sido un mes algo ajetreado y no he tenido tiempo libre para mi querido blog.

En el mes de septiembre he cumplido 40 y para celebrarlo mi mujer y yo hemos dejado a los peques en Madrid y nos hemos ido unos días a Inglaterra, a reunirnos con viejos amigos y de escapada romántica. Me lo pasé genial, fueron unos días casi perfectos, solo faltaron los niños....bueno claro que con ellos no habría visitado tantos pubs ni me habría reido tanto con los viejos amigos así que fue mejor que no vinieran....pero les eché de menos....un poco......en fin basta de análisis y fíjate ¡¡¡¡que fotos de flores más bonitas hice en Henley!!!.

I am back from holidays. Well that was actually in late august but it has been very hectic in my life lately and I have not had much free time for my dear blog.

I turned 40 in September. To celebrate it my wife and I left the little ones behind and went ona 5 day weekend to England. We met up with old friends and also had time for our own romantic trip. It was great. No it was awesome, I had the best time, I would even say they were perfect days...well I kind of missed the kids....but then again I wouldn't have visited so many pubs and shared so many laughs with my old buddies if they had come...so maybe it was better without them....oh no I mean I missed them......oh never mind so much analysis and check out the beautiful flower pictures I took in Henley!!!!!!

De todos los sitios que he visitado, me parece que Inglaterra tiene la mejor decoración floral. Hasta este fín de semana pensaba que era Bélgica, pero he cambiado de opinión después de este viaje. La foto de arriba viene de la decoración floral que rodea este monumento.

Of all the places I have visited, I find England has by far the most beautiful flower arrangements. I thought it was Belgium until this weekend, but I changed my mind afer this trip. The top picture comes from the flowers surrounding this monument.

En ambos casos usan una técnica de colocar una planta en el centro que crecerá alta, y está rodeada de una planta de las que crecen colgando. Es relativamente básico y yo lo intento continuamente en mis propias macetas.... pero no con el mismo éxito confieso.

La planta del fondo con flores espigadas y violetas es una salvia, que por cierto en este clima se dan mucho mejor que en mi balcón de Madrid. Si no me equivoco las plantas con flores rojas son begonias, que recuerdo hace muchos años intentar crecerlas con poco éxito. La planta que cuelga con flores blancas no sé como se llama. En Madrid no me suena verla en los viveros. Una pena porque es una maravillas como decora.

In both arrangements they are using a relatively simple technique where you place in the centre of your pot a plant that will grow tall, and surround it by a plant that will hang as it grows. Simple, effective, I try it all the time at home but never so succesfully.

The plant in the far end with tall violet flowers is a salvia plant. I grow it at home in Madrid too, but this weather is obviously much better for it because mine doesn't look that healty. The plant with the red flowers I believe is a begonia. Not so sure since I recall trying to grow one a few years back but it did not adapt well to my balcony. The hanging plant with the white flowers I do not know how it is called. I did not recognize it and I don't think it is sold in Madrid. A pity because it looks lovely.

Henley es un pueblo precioso que además tiene una decoración floral extraordinaria. Estos maceteros colgantes que están en un centro comercial en la entrada me llamaron la atención. Tienen salvia en la parte alta, acompañada primero de geranios y la planta que cuelga es una petunia.

Henley is a beautiful town and it has an incredible flower decoration. These hanging pots on a shopping mall at the entrance of the townn called my attention. They have salvia on top, then geranium and hanging petunia.

Aunque había obras en el ayuntamiento, ¡¡¡¡es que estaba así de bonito!!!!

They were doing some works on the Town Hall, but hey these are works in stlye !!

Todos los pubs tenían bonitas decoraciones en la entrada, todas en armonía con el resto de la calle.

All pubs have nice flower arrangements, all in harmony with the rest of the street.

Había unas cuantas de estas 'torres' de petunias y geranios. Me recordó a unos que ví en un pueblecito de Bélgica llamado Gits, en un post de junio del año pasado.

Quite impressive 'flower towers' composed of geranium and petunias. Reminds me of some I saw in Gits, this little town in Belgium of which I did a post in june last year.

Este pub tenía una decoración realmente impresionante. Creo que no conseguí plasmarlo en la foto como se merece. Es impresionante pero solo tienen 4 especiesgeranios, begonias, petunias, y esa flor blanca que no soy capaz de reconocer.

This is another pub that has an incredible flower docoration. I think I was not able to really take the beauty of the place into the picture. All they have here is four types of plants: begonia, geranium, petunia and that white flower I can't recognize.

Esto creo que es algún tipo de edificio oficial. Es bonito en si mismo, pero es que menuda decoración tan espectacular. ¡Así da gusto ir a trabajar por las mañanas!

I think this is some type of official building It is nice in itself but the flower decoration sure enhances its beauty. It has to be nice to go to work in the morning and walk through that door every day!

Para despedirme un poco de la esencia de la jardinería urbana, la que practicamos tú y yo. Hasta ahora todos los maceteros que has visto yo creo que los habrá preparado una empresa de jardinería profesional. Saliendo del pueblo y andando hacia el río Tamesis, donde tienen lugar las regatas que hacen a Henley tan famoso, me encontré con este bonito macetero en el balcón de una casa. Hay muchas horas de vuelo aquí, mucha experiencia y mucho cariño. La esencia de la jardinería urbana.

Just to say goodbye, a little bit of the essence of urban gardening, the one that you and I practice. Everything we have seen up to now I believe has been prepared by professional gardeners. But as we walked out of town and down to the Thames river, where the regatta that make Henley so famous take place, I found this beautiful pot on the sill of someone's house. Lots of work and lots of experience here, and just as beautiful as the rest of the pots if you ask me. The essence of urban gardening.

Espectaculares lilium en junio --- Beautiful Lilium in June

¡¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo!!! --- Hello there !!!

Estas fotos son del balcón oeste en uno de sus mejores momentos del año. La flor amarilla del lilium contrasta con los tonos rojos y rosas del geranio y violeta de la lavanda. Esta panorámica ya la conoces verdad, la foto tomada desde el salón adyacente al balcón, sacando el brazo con la cámara y flipando a mis vecinos.

Here you have some pictures of the West Balcony on one of the best moments of the year. The yellow flower of the lillium contrasts with the red and pink geranium and purple lavander. Well you know this picture is taken from the neighbouring living room, sticking my hand out the window and freaking my nieighbours out.

Me confieso un poco vago este año y no he puesto refuerzos a los lilium, que como crecen tanto cuando florecen se caen por su propio peso. De todas formas me gusta el contraste del lilium amarillo al apoyarse sobre el geranio rojo.

I have to confess I have been a bit lazy this year. I have not helped out the tall lilium with any reinforcement sticks. So as they get big and the flower grows, they just fall over their own weight. However I think it doesn't look that bad, it sort of rests on the geranium and the nice contrast becomes more apparent.

Entrando en el balcón, vemos esta jardinera de la derecha. Recordarás una foto de principios de mes en la que estaba bonita, pero no tanto como ahora que los lilium se han abierto. :)

Walking into the balcony, we have the pot on the right. You might remember the same picture two weeks ago, it looked real nice, but nota as good as now that the lilium are all in bloom.

El siguiente macetero tiene esta bonita santolina acompañada de petunias y pensamientos.

Moving to the left, the next pot has the santolina accompanied by pansies an petunias.

Si vamos mirando hacia la izquierda, como sabes nos acercamos a la zona de tonalidades mas rosas y moradas.

Peeking over to the left, we see more pink and purple tones.

La esquina de la izquierda queda muy bonita, el lilium amarillo en total contraste con el resto de flores.

Recordarás que el año pasado colgaba muchas fotos de puestas de sol. Me ha ocurrido una cosa graciosa y es que al comprarme una cámara mejor, pues no consigo los tonos tan bonitos que sacaba con la digital. Bueno y también es cierto que existe una pequeña fierecilla por la casa que este año anda, corre, grita y ríe mucho más que el año pasado, y no me permite ni un segundo de contemplación de mis queridas puestas de sol urbanas....

You might remember that last year I was always posting sunset pictures. Well something funny happened, I got myself a much better camera and I just don't know how to get those nice sunset tones anymore !! Well and of course this year there is this little beast in the house that walks, jumps, plays, yells, cries and laughs a lot more than last year.....so no more time to relax watching lovey city sunsets.......

Me despido con esta foto del balcón vista desde la calle. Es sin duda uno de los momentos más bonitos del año. :)

Flores en los canales de Brujas ---- Flowers in the canals of Bruges

De nuevo viajando por trabajo, pasé una tarde de junio en Brujas, una de las ciudades más bonitas de Europa. Está llena de canales y monumentos antiguos. Es muy recomendable.

Once more travelling for work, I spent an afternoon in June in Bruges, one of the nicest cities in Europe. Just like Venice it is full of canlas and beautiful old buildings. It really is a must.

Tenía la tarde libre así que me calcé las deportivas y salí a correr por el casco antiguo de la ciudad. Tuve suerte porque hacía mucho sol.... y no siempre hace tan bueno en Bélgica. Me gustó este pequeño puesto de autobús acuático para turistas. Una cosa que me encanta de los Belgas es su gusto por el detalle. No es lo mismo esperar tu turno rodeado de estas preciosas flores :)

I had the whole afternoon to myself so I put on my running shoes and went out for a jog in the city. I was lucky because it was a sunny day...and let's just say it is not that common in Belgium. I saw this water bus post for tourists and it called my attention. Something I like about Belgium is how they are always taking care of the little details. I mean it is not the same thing to be waiting your turn if you are surrounded by beautiful flowers :)

Paseando por un canal me encantó esta casa. Menuda terraza dando al canal!!!!

Hay una zona peatonal que está plagada de bonitas tiendas. En una de antigüedades me llamó la atención este bonito macetero.

The centre of Bruges has this walking area that is full of shops. In an antique shop this lovely pot called my attention.

La planta alta la reconozco como salvia, que tengo creciendo en mi terraza. Las violetas no las encuentro en los viveros de Madrid, y las florecitas blancas tampoco.

The tall plant I recognize as salvia, I have it growing in my terrace. The little violet and white flowers I haven't found in Madrid.

Me gusta salir a correr cuando tengo poco tiempo para visitar una ciudad, porque realmente se puede ver bastante en poco tiempo. Después de una ducha salí a cenar. Volví a este restaurante que me había llamado la atención por su decoración floral muy urbana. Eché un vistazo por las ventanas y me pareció que habían pocos turistas y más bien gente con pinta de ser local, así que entré. En Bélgica se come muy bien. Si no has ido nunca, no debes partir sin probar las famosas 'moules et frites', mejillones con patatas fritas. Por supuesto mojadas en cerveza. Yo me dejé aconsejar y me pusieron unos mejillones hechos en una salsa que tenía la misma cerveza que bebí.....esos pequeños detalles siempre hacen la diferencia :). Cuando vayas a Bélgica, habla tranquilamente con el camarero y déjale que te ayude a escoger tu plato.

I like going out jogging in a city because it gets you around and you see a lot in little time. Well I took a shower and went out for dinner. I had noticed this restaurant with a very nice urban floral decoration. I looked through the windows and it sort of looked like the were more local people than tourists, so I went in for dinner. Belgium has a very good cuisine. If you have never been there, you have to try their best plate, 'moules et frites', mussels with french fries. Oh and you always have to talk with the guy who is serving you. Let him explain the plates and take your time for a good decision. I drank the same beer they used on the preparation of the sauce for the mussels. As I said, they take care of the little details, and that just makes the whole difference :)

Al salir del restaurante, feliz y contento, me fijé un poco más en las jardineras. Este es el estilo que intento siempre copiar en mis terrazas...muy barroco :)

As I walked out of the restaurant, happy and well fed, I took a quick look at the flowers. I love that style that I always try to copy back at home on my balconies...very barroque :)

El geranio se repite en muchas fotos que voy sacando, y es que es la planta del verano por excelencia. aquí está acompañado de petunias y calibrochoa.

The geranium as you see is everywhere in summertime. Here it is well accompanied with petunias and calibrochoa.

Prado semisalvaje en fábrica alemana ---Semi wild field in German manufacturing plant

¡¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!!! ---- Hello there!!!

En el mes de mayo estuve de viaje por Alemania. Fui a visitar una fábrica en la ciudad de Weissenfels que tenía una entrada ajardinada espectacular.

During the month of may I spent a few days in Germany. I visited this manufacturing plant in Weissenfels that had an incredible garden at the entrance.

Tardaban un poco en recibirme así que salí a echar una ojeada. Es un estilo de decoración muy curioso. ¿Parece un precioso prado salvaje verdad?

They were taking some time to come and greet me, so I walked outside to take a look. It´s a curious style of gardening. It kind of looks wild and abandoned, doesn't it?

Realmente lo que han hecho aquí es colocar un número importante de diferentes plantas de forma ordenada, que como ves dan mucho color. Luego sencillamente se deja crecer y se entremezcla con plantas autóctonas que crecen de forma natural y espontánea. El resultado es de un prado semi salvaje.

What they have actually done here is place a whole bunch of different colourful plants with a nice pattern. Then they have simply allowed other plants to grow naturally. The final effect is a semi wild field, with beautiful flowers :)

Un cantante español llamado Enrique Bunbury tiene una canción que se llama 'Sacame de aquí' y una parte de la canción dice : 'No soy mala hierba, solo hierba en mal lugar'...bueno pues ya ves que a veces un jardín con un poco de 'mala hierba' puede lucir muy bonito con otro tipo de plantas más vistosas. :)

There is this Spanish singer called Enrique Bunbury and he has this song called 'Sacame de aquí' which means 'Get me out of here' and part of the song says ' I am not a weed, just a plant growing in the wrong place' ....well as you see sometimes some weeds in your garden, together with other 'nicer' plants can give you a semi wild look that is pretty nice :)

Bueno y después de llevar cinco minutos haciendo fotos de manera discreta, pues ya me metí y no se dio cuenta nadie.

Well after 5 minutes of discreetly taking pictures, I walked back in and nobody noticed a thing.

Esa noche viajé con el cliente a otra ciudad pues al día siguiente visitábamos otra fábrica. Por la noche nos dimos unos tres cuartos de hora antes de cenar así que me calcé las deportivas y salí a correr. Había un vivero y me acerqué a echar un vistazo a las plantas. Me gustó mucho la decoración de esta inmensa maceta. Alrededor del seto hay unos sencillos geranios y petunias. Un pequeño detalle que aporta mucho color.

That same night I travelled with a client to another city, since we were going to visit another manufacturing plant. At night we gave each other 45 minutes to relax on our own before dinner. I went out for a quick run, and I saw this plant shop and had to take a look of course. I was impressed with this humongous yet colourful pot. The simple detail of the geranium and petunia sure makes the difference.

Ah y la noche anterior, paseando solo por el pueble me encontré con esta bonita casa. Un diseño sencillo y elegante.

Oh and the night before, walking on my own around town I saw this house with a very simple yet elegant pattern.

Si te fijas en la jardinera que repiten en todas las ventanas, verás que tiene solo dos plantas. Las flores rojas pertenecen a un geranio, y las blancas a un alyssum. Las reconozco por que las tengo en casa también :)

Take a closer look at this pot which they repeat on every window. Very simple but effective. The red flowers belong to a petunia and the white flowers to an alyssum. I recognized them easily because I grow them too :)

Gladiolos en junio --- Gladioli in June

¡ Hola de nuevo! ---- Hello there!

He llegado por fin a la última flor que florece en este primer semestre. Se trata de los gladiolos, otro bulbo que crece a gusto en condiciones soleadas. Es una planta que crece muy alta que se ve desde lejos :).

Finally it is time for the last flower of the first semester to open up. This tall flower is a gladiolus, another bulb plant that grows happy under the sun. It grows into quite a tall flower, so you can see it from far away :)

Comentaba en el anterior post lo curioso que es que las mismas plantas en ambos balcones florecen con casi dos semanas de diferencia. Ocurrió con los lilium y ha ocurrido con los gladiolos también. Estas fotos son de los mismos días que el anterior post, y se ve que aquí ya han florecido los gladiolos pero en el otro balcón todavía no se ha abierto ninguno. Los lilium ya se estaban secando, pero todavía hacían una bonita combinación con los gladiolos :)

I was writing in the last post how funny it is that the same plants in both balconies may have flowers with amost two weeks difference. It happened with the lilium and it is happening with the gladioli too. These pictures are taken on almost the same days as the last post and as you can see there were no gladioli in the other balcony. The lilium here are already drying up, but they still make a nice combination with gladioli :)

Esta flor rosa es de un bulbo llamado oxalis y florece también en esta época del año, tiene hojas que recuerdan a las tréboles y estas flores rosas que se cierran por las noches. ¡¡¡¡¡Es un auténtico sobreviviente pues lo planté por primera vez hace más de 10 años !!!!!

This pink flower belongs to a bulb plant called oxalis. It always blooms at this time of the year, it has leaves thet remind of those of a clover and flowers that close at night. This one is a real survivor, I bought and planted it for the first time more than 10 years ago !!!!!

Esta es la vista del balcón al abrir la puerta. En estos días estaba haciendo mucho calor y las plantas ya estaban empezando a sufrir un poco. Si comparas con el post de una semana antes puedes ver que el balcón tiene menos color.....pero bueno por eso es importante tener una buena bateria de flores que vayan creciendo en diferentes momentos, y en este momento del año, el gladiolo es el protagonista indiscutible :)

This is a view of the balcony as you open the bedroom doors. These days it is already very hot and if you compare with the last post which belongs to a week earlier, you will notice that the picture is not so colourful because many flowers are drying up. That is why you have got to have a whole bunch of different plants giving you flowers throughout the year. Right now there is no doubt it is the time of gladioli :)

En esta época andaba viajando bastante y con bastante trabajo con lo que no pude cuidar demasiado de las plantas. Por ejemplo los gladiolos crecen bastante deprisa y si no se van poniendo palitos de apoyo, de un día a otro se tuercen y crecen todos torcidos como en esta foto desde el fondo !!!!

At this time of the year I have been travelling a lot, working a lot and I have not dedicated much time to my plants. This picture is a perfect example of what happens when you are a bit busy. The gladioli grow tall very quickly and they always need a little support...otherwise they grow all crooked like in the picture!!!!!

A principios de junio el balcón Oeste estaba así de alegre :)

At the beginning of June, my West balcony was looking this colourful :)

Vamos a echar un vistazo empezando por la derecha. La jardinera del fondo está preciosa. Es curioso por que en el balcón este, los lilium florecieron casi dos semanas antes. Creo que la diferencia fundamental es el viento, y es que este balcón tiene mucho más. Con respecto al sol, realmente en esta época del año tienen las mismas horas de sol. En el balcón este tienen sol por la mañana, y en el balcón oeste tienen sol por la tarde.

Let's take a look starting on the right. The far pot looks pretty nice. It is funny because the same lilium gave flowers on the other balcony about two weeks before! I think the main difference is the wind condition, this one is a lot more windy. With respect to the sun, at this time of the year both balconies receive the same amount of sunlight hours, the East balcony gets sun in the morning, and the West balcony gets sun in the afternoon.

Me gusta este zoom en el que se ven de cerca las flores amarillas tipo botón de la santolina, haciendo juego con los lilium altos y los pensamientos al fondo, todo en amarillo y haciendo contraste con el rojo del geranio. Me siento orgullos de este detalle, esta foto me la imaginé cuando planté las plantas en otoño :)

I like this close up where the yellow button like flowers of the santolina match the yellow flowers of the tall lilium and short pansies, making contrast with the red geranium. Yeah I am proud of this one because I imagined this picture when I planted everything in fall :)

Un par de fotos de los pensamientos del fondo. Es una planta que da mucha alegría en cualquier jardinera. Las variedades de flor grande, dan menos flores que las de flor pequeña. A mi me gusta agrupar los dos tipos juntos.

Here you have two close ups of the pansies. You can get the variety of big flowers, that will have less flowers, or the variety of small ones, that will give you a lot more flowers. I like to mix them together:)

Dando un paso hacia atrás, esta flor pertenece a la planta de lavanda, una aromática muy conocida que aguanta bien el sol de Madrid, y anima cualquier balcón.

Taking a step back, in the center pot I have a lavender plant, that gives these beautiful violet flowers. It takes on the Madrid sun quite well and makes the balcony outsand.

Parece una foto bonita verdad ?!, una bonita mariposa en la ciudad....pero cuando veas este tipo de mariposa échate a temblar porque es de las que pone sus huevos en los geranios y luego sus orugas te los destrozan. Literalmente los comen por dentro. Normalmente no me gusta usar insecticidas, pero en cuanto veo una de estas, pues pulverizo los geranios el mismo día. Además me acuerdo perfectamente, era el verano del '93 o '94, cuando yo empezaba a trastear con plantas en mi balcón, y la floristera del barrio me dijo que ese año habían llegado unas mariposas de África que se comían los geranios....No sé si es verdad o no, pero lo cierto es que son una plaga dañina.

This looks like a lovely picture, doesn't it? ...a beautiful butterfly on a city flower :)....well if you see this you better watch out. This type of butterfly lays its eggs on the geranium, and the caterpillar will literally eat them up. Now normally I do not use insecticides, but whenever I see these butterflies, I always spray the geranium. I remember it like it was yesterday. In the summer of '93 or '94, at the flower shop of my neighbourhood they told me that this butterfly had come from Africa and it was eating the geranium. I do not know if this is true, but they sure are harmful to geranium.

Girando a la izquierda, como sabes tengo mi zona de colores con tonalidades moradas y rosas ...bueno y ahora salpicado con el amarillo del lilium :)

And now if we look to the left, as you know this part has pink and violet colours...oh and now a little speck of yellow from the lilium too :)

En estas dos fotos se aprecia lo frondosas que están las jardineras. Los geranios y los pensamientos han dado buen resultado juntos.

Here you have two pictures where everything looks pretty nice. The pansies and petunias really fill up the space with colour.

Un par de detalles que me han encantado. La flor violeta es de una planta llamada salvia, que queda muy linda con el geranio rosa.

Two details I quite liked. The violet flower belongs to the salvia, and looks great with the pink geranium.

Hola de nuevo! --- Hello there !

Un año más mis lilium vuelven a iluminar mis balcones con sus flores espléndidas amarillas. Esta foto está tomada desde mi cocina. Normalmente no tomo fotos desde esta perspectiva, pero es que normalmente las plantas no crecen de forma tan exagerada !!!

Another year and my lilium plants are filling my balconies with beautiful yellow flowers. This picture is taken from my kithcen. Normally I don't take pictures from there, but of course normally the plants on this pot do not stand out like that !!!

Bueno pasemos de la cocina al balcón a echar un vistazo. Esta es la misma jardinera, pero ahora vista desde atrás. La planta más alta con flores blancas es un gladiolo.

Well let's walk into my East Balcony and take a look. This is the same pot, except that you are looking at it from the other side now.The tall plant with the white flowers is a gladioulus.

En este zoom puedes apreciar una mariquita paseando entres las flores de lilium. Es muy bienvenida pues se come el pulgón y algunos bichos que atacan las plantas. Pues como te comentaba el año pasado por estas fechas, esta es una de la las mejores inversiones que he hecho. Todos los años rescato los bulbos y los vuelvo a plantar, y cada año las plantas son más grandes.

Here is a close up of the lilium flowers. You can appreciate a little lady bug waking around, and freeing me of little bugs. I have had these for years. It is a bulb plant, I replant it every year and every year they grow a little bigger. Probably the best investment I have ever made :)

Un pequeño zoom de la jardinera, en la que se aprecian los pensamientos de color blanco y violeta. Llevan ahí todo el invierno, alegrando el balcón.

Here is close up of the lilium with the white and purple pansies.

Dando un par de pasos hacia atrás, ahora puedes ver todo el fondo del balcón. Demos una vuelta y te voy a enseñar algunos detalles. Esto es finales de mayo, está haciendo mucho calor esta primavera, así que tengo muchas flores.

Now if we take a step back, you can see almost the whole balcony. The pot we were looking up closely is the one at the end. Let me show you around, and let's take a look at the little details. This is the end of May and it has been really hot this spring, so there are lot of flowers in bloom.

En la izquierda y pegados a la pared, tengo dos maceteros grandes con buganvillas. Es una planta que se ve en el sur de España por todas partes. En Madrid sufren bastante en invierno. Solo aguantan si están en un entorno resguardado del viento, o si directamente se cubren. Aquí aparece una de las primeras flores del año :)

On the left side, on two pots that are on the floor against the wall, I have two bouganvillea plants. You find these plants all over the place in the South of Spain. However in Madrid they really suffer in winter time and they only survive if they are in a spot that is not windy, or of course if you cover them up. Here is one of the first flowers.

Justo en frente de la buganvilla, en el suelo y pegados a la valla de bambú, tengo una planta de zarzamora. El año pasado no se me dió muy bien. He supuesto que fue porque estaba en un macetero colgante y que no le sentó bien el sol directo. Así que este año estoy haciendo una prueba y la he bajado al suelo para que esté en un lugar luminoso, pero protegida del sol directo por el bambú. De momento va bien, y está sacando estas florecitas blancas, que como ves ya se van convirtiendo en fruto :)

Right in front of the bouganvillea, also on a pot on the floor, but against the right bamboo fence of the balcony is a blackberry plant. Last year I had it on a hanging pot and it did not give me any fruit and I figure it is because the sun is too strong for this forest plant. I am trying this little experiment of putting it on the floor, where it is protected by the bamboo fence from direct sunlight. So far so good, it is flowering already and you can see the first blackberries are growing already.

Al fondo a la derecha, la primera jardinera tiene un frambueso. Esta foto me gusta porque tiene mucho color. Las florecitas amarillas son pensamientos pequeños, y la violeta es un bulbo cuyo nombre no recuerdo. Estas son las primeras frambuesas del año que están listas para comerse.

If we take a look on the far right. There is the pot that has the raspberry plant. I like this colourful picture, where you can see the yellow pansies, the first raspberries of the year, and the littel bell like violet flowers, whose name I do not know.

Ya ves que es un balcón largo y estrecho. En las siguientes fotos voy a hacer un barrido de izquierda a derecha. Esto se ve mirando al fondo, a la izquierda. El año pasado me dí cuenta de que tenía unos espacios entre jardineras que se podían rellenar. Compré tres maceteros redondos de forma que he conseguido un efecto de continuidad a lo largo de la barandilla.

As you have noticed, the balcony is long and narrow. In the next pictures I am going to move from one end to the other. You have seen one end already. Along the balcony, this would be like the far end, alonside the long part. Last year I realized that there was too much space between pots so I bought some small ones to fill in the gaps. I am quite glad I did it because it does look rather continuous, like there are loads of flowers all lined up.

Esto es lo que se ve cuando se abren las ventanas balconeras de nuestro dormitorio. ¿! No está mal verdad?! :) He plantado los bulbos de lilium en cada uno de los maceteros, así que están un poco en todas partes. A la derecha está mi planta de arándano, vamos a verlo de cerca.

This is what you see when you open the bedroom doors. Quite nice in the morning :) Lilium bulbs have been planted on each and every pot, so they are pretty well eveywhere. You can see another plant of pansies, again white and purple, but it is a different pot than the first one I showed you. Oh and here is my cranberry plant too.

Este es un zoom de mis primeros arándanos. Todavía no están maduros, pero ya les queda poco.

Here are the cranberries, already there but not quite ripe yet.

And finally if you look to the other end, here is the rest of the balcony.

Te hablaba antes de los tres maceteros redondos. Los preparé con un diseño similar: una planta de pensamientos al centro, y los laterales con una bateria de diferentes bulbos para ir creciendo de forma escalonada en el tiempo. He tenido primero tulipanes negros y amarillos, luego iris, y ahora están los lilium y terminaremos con los gladiolos dando flor.

I told you about the small pots I added this fall to fill up the gaps. I bought three round pots and prepared all in a similar way. I put a pansy plant in the middle, and all around I planted a whole bunch of different bulbs. They have been growing at different times since wintertime and it has turned out a nice experiment. First it was the black and yellow tulips, then the Iris grew and now it is the lilium and next it will be gladiolus to flower.

This is the another round pot, similar to the top one but with red pansies instead.

La jardinera del fondo me gusta porque está algo asilvestrada. Hace dos años planté diferentes bulbos pero el año pasado no los toqué, así que está todo creciendo un poco a su aire.

This pot here on the far right is pretty nice. This year I did not touch it. I planted some bulbs like two years ago and I have just let them grow on their own.

Andando al fondo del todo, y desde esta última jardinera, he hecho esta foto en la que está claro que en este momento la flor de lilium es la reina indiscutible del balcón.

Taking a step to the far right, I took this nice picture....Lilium is the queen of the balcony, no doubt about that :)

Maravillado con la primavera en Sierra de Gata (II)--- Impressive Sierra de Gata in West of Spain

Hola de nuevo--- Hello there

Ven conmigo a dar un paseo por el sorprendente pueblo de Valverde del Fresno, en la Sierra de Gata. Nos fuimos de escapada un fin de semana. El sábado hicimos un tour por pueblos de la zona (que te contaba en un post anterior), y el domingo tomé estas fotos paseando por el pueblo en el que estábamos alojados. Muy sorprendente cuando vives en una ciudad, dar un paseo por el pueblo y de repente encontrarte este campo de olivos abandonado, habitado por un caballo y cubierto por bonitas flores de primavera.

Come with me for a walk around the surprising town of Valverde del Fresno, in the West of Spain, on the border with Portugal. My wife and I went there on a quick weekend holiday. On Saturday we visited surrounding towns ( I told you about that in an earlier post) and on Sunday we walked around this town. It is quite surprising when you live in a city, to start wandering around a town and all of a sudden find this abandoned terrain with olive trees, inhabited by a horse and covered in beautiful spring flowers.

Me encontré con dos casas que tenían unos jardines especialemente llamativos. Esta es la primera.

Walking around we found these two houses with particularily nice gardens. This is the first one.

Me gusta la forma en que han colocado arbustos muy verdes y más altos al fondo, y en primer plano plantas más bajas con diferentes colores.

I like the way they have placed taller green trees in the back, and then more colourful and smaller plants in the front.

Esta casa tenía un jardín que no parecía español.

This house called my attention because the gardening style did not seem Spanish at all.

Me ha llamado mucho la atención que en esta parte de España se ven rosales por todas partes. Este jardín está bien surtido.

In this region I have seen loads of roses. It is not that common in Spain, but I guess the Sierra de Gata has a wet climate. I like the way they have placed these different coloured roses, again with taller green trees in the background.

De repente nos salimos de la parte más urbana del pueblo, y nos perdimos en una zona llena de campos medio abandonados. De nuevo la primavera ofrece unos campos llenos de flores de colores espectaculares. Si te gusta la foto pídemela por correo y te la envío encantado. Yo me he puesto una de estas como fondo de escritorio en mi ordenador y queda muy bien.

We kept on wandering about and all of a sudden had left the more inhabited part of the town and walked into an area of abandoned fields. They were all filled up with amazing spring flowers. Again if you like this picture send my an email and I will be glad to send in higher resolution. I have one taken on this trip on my computer and it is pretty nice.

Me gusta el contraste que ofrece nuestro país a veces. Esta parra debe tener tantos años como el estilo de bar que adorna. Sin duda esta es una estampa típica de España.

Spain is a country of contrasts. As you leave the big cities and enter smaller towns, it is even greater. I was impressed with this bar, the plant that looks like a grapevine, must be as old as the building itself.

Aquí el contraste, pues no muy lejos me encontré con una urbanización más moderna y con un estilo de casas que bien podríamos estar en Suiza. Esta casa tiene el balcón repleto de geranios de diferentes colores, puestos en macetas redondas individuales.

Well and here is the contrast. Quite close to that bar was this neighbourhood of more modern houses. Actually when I see this picture I kind of think more of Switzerland. Anyways check out that beautiful line of geraniums on the balcony. Quite an easy way to make a sunny balcony very colourful. Just get a whole bunch of geraniums in different colours and place each one in its own pot.

La misma casa tiene este jardín tan increíblemente florido. Que bonito :)

Para terminar este detalle que me ha encantado y que estoy pensando en la forma de copiar en alguna pared de mis balcones. Han colocado sobre unas tuberias de PVC cortadas por la mitad, una hilera de fresas !!!!! Que forma mas buena de aprovechar el espacio :)

To finish I want to share this incredible idea we saw in a house close to the hotel. It is a line of PVC pipes, cut in half and growing strawberries :) I love it:) I am already thinking of doing something similar next year on one of my balcony walls.

¡Hola de nuevo!! --- Hello there !!!!

Estamos en el mes de julio y estoy publicando posts de fotos tomadas mayo...en fin las baterías se agotan ¡¡¡pero hay que hacer un último esfuerzo antes del verano verdad!!! Las plantas en Madrid están igual que yo. Hace tanto calor y el sol las castiga tanto, que solo tratan de aguantar hasta fin de mes. De todas formas tengo ya organizadas todas mis fotos así que en las siguientes tres semanas te voy a hacer un resumen de mayo a julio de mis dos terrazas. Ya verás que flores más bonitas he tenido :)

Esta es una vista desde la derecha de mi balcón oeste en el mes de mayo. La foto está tomada desde el salón. Resaltan las flores rojas del geranio, que en esta época del año está en su mejor momento.

Well it's July already but I am still posting pictures taken in May....I guess I am running out of batteries. But hey, one more effort before the summer holidays right!!!! The plants in Madrid are just like me now. It is really hot and they are just surviving the strong sun and simply making it until the end of the month. Anyways I have been able to organize my pictures so in the next three weeks I am going to catch up and show you the diary of my plants from May to July. You will see I have had beautiful flowers :)

Here is a view of the West Balcony from the right, a picture taken from our living room window. The red flowers are geranium, looking really good at their best moment of the year.

Come with me to my terrace, let's take a look. As you enter and look to the right, this is what you see.

Copiando los patios andaluces, tengo este geranio colgando en la pared. Bueno realmente si te fijas bien verás que se trata de tres geranios juntos. ¿has visto que las flores tienen colores diferentes? Es un recurso muy útil y vistoso, colocar el mismo tipo de planta pero escogiendo dos o tres con flores de diferentes colores. Con los geranios es muy fácil hacerlo y decora mucho cualquier pared.

Check out this geranium on hanging pot on the wall. I am imitating a gardening style from the south of Spain, Andalucian houses are famous for these type of pots and flowers. Well if you look closely there are actually three plants here. It is quite a colourful idea, to place the same type of plant, but with different coloured flowers. Very easy to do and gives a very good result.

Es época de geranios y no me canso de mirarlos. Es una planta muy popular y si te estás planteando empezar con la jardinería, debe ser una de las primeras plantas que te compres, porque luego son muy resistentes también. ¡ Lo tiene todo el geranio! :)

It is time for geranium. I just never get tired of them. A very popular plant and if you are thinking of taking up gardening as a hobby it is definetly one of the first plants you have to buy. It is quite resistant and very colourful, always blooming with new flowers. It has it all, the beautiful geranium :)

Dando un pasito al frente puedes mirar de nuevo a la derecha. Como ves tengo toda la barandilla cubierta de jardineras. El amarillo y el rojo es efectivamente porque España es campeona del mundo, igual que con los geranios, es que tampoco me canso de pensar en ello : )

El geranio rojo está creciendo hacia afuera y me gustaría que colgase de forma exagerada y que se vea bien desde la calle. Las flores amarillas que le acompañan son pensamientos. Están plantadas en otoño y han aguantado bastante bien el invierno. Las plantas altas son lilium, que florecerán en breve.

Taking a step forward you can take another look on the right. Oh my!!, red and yellow are indeed the colours of the Spanish flag and of course it is nice to remember that last year we became football world Champions...just like with geranium, I never get tired of that thought either :)

The red geranium is right on the corner because I want it to grow and hang so it may be seen from far far away. The yellow flowers are all pansies, that were planted in fall and have survived nicely the winter. The big tall plants are lilium, and they will soon offer some nice flowers.

Esta es una visión más amplia de las plantas en el lado derecho. Las margaritas blancas las compré por abril, cuando supe que me harían la foto para la revista Cosmopolitan y siguen dando buen resultado. A pie de foto, y más o menos coincidiendo con el centro del balcón se ve un geranio blanco.

Here you a deeper view of the plants. The white daysies I bought some time in April when I was told they would be taking a picture for the Cosmopolitan magazine. They are still doing pretty good. On the bottom of the picture is another geranium, this one with white flowers.

Un zoom de las margaritas blancas. Dan mucho color a las terrazas, pero la verdad es que son algo delicadas.

A close up of the white flowers, they really bring on a lot of light to the balcony, but the truth is they are a bit delicate.

Esta flor tan curiosa amarilla, con forma de botón, pertenece a la santolina. Es una planta aromática que aguanta muy bien espacios soleados. Tiene una fragancia muy característica. Es muy resistente también, así que si estás pensando en empezar a plantar por primera vez, ponla en la lista de la compra.

This is a rather curious plant. These button like flowers belong to a santolina. It is an aromatic that likes being placed in a sunny spot. It has a very characteristic fragance. It is also quite resistant, so again if you are taking up gardening for the first time, put it on the shopping list.

Una par de fotos más, como se abre en plan abanico, pues rellena mucho y pega con todo lo que le rodea.

Two more pictures where you can see how it really opens up a lot and sort of goes well with any neighbouring plants.

Si nos movemos al macetero del centro, destacan estas margaritas azules. También las compré en abril pero no se me han dado demasiado bien. Es una planta preciosa pero me resulta algo delicada.

Moving towards the center of the balcony, I have these very nice flowers. I also bought them in April, and although they are very nice, well they are a tad delicate and need extra attention.

Girando hacia la izquierda, nos encontramos con un cambio de tonos en las flores. Tengo rojo y amarillo en la derecha del balcón, blanco en el centro, y en la izquierda predominan los colores azul, rosa y morado.

Esta jardinera tiene una planta de romero, una aromática a la que de vez en cuando le corto un par ramitas para alguna carne que preparo. Las flores que dan tanto color son pensamientos y petunias. De nuevo los lilium que están plantados un poco por todas partes en el balcón todavía no han florecido. Bueno y la planta más alta es un gladiolo, que es el último en florecer siempre antes de las vacaciones de verano.

Ok well let's take a look at our left now. You will see a different tone of colours. I have red and yellow on the right, a bit of white in the center, and on the left it is mostly pink, violet and blue.

This pot has a rosemary plant on the right. An aromatic that once in a while loses a little branch or two that I use for cooking meat. The flowers are petunias and pansies. You may recognize the lilium again, I have them sort of evenly planted througout the balcony. Oh and the other tall plant is a gladiolius, but this one is the last to have flowers before summer holidays.

Un zoom de una flor de petunia. Esta me gusta especialmente pues ha sobrevivido todo el invierno. Son plantas que normalmente solo aguantan una temporada, pero de vez en cuando alguna sobrevive a la primavera siguiente.

A close up of a petunia flower. This one in particular I like a lot. It was planted last spring and it has survived the whole winter. This is rather unique but I have seen it happen sometimes. Quite a survivor this one is.

Ahora un par de fotos de la vista de la derecha del todo. Tengo otro geranio colgante en la esquina, con flores rosas. Bajo el sol de primavera, los pensamientos violetas y las petunias moradas hacen juego con el geranio rosa.

You can see on the far right I have another geranium, this time with pink flowers. Under the spring sun, geranium, pansies and petunia make a nice combination.

Esta flor morada tan curiosa es de una planta llamada salvia. El año pasado la planté por primera vez. Ha estado bastante triste todo el invierno, pero ahora esta ofreciendo estas flores moradas tan curiosas.

You may have noticed there is also this purple flower. It comes from a plant called salvia. It had a pretty tough time during winter, but now it is looking good again.

Para terminar una vista del balcón desde la calle. Como puedes ver ya empieza a llamar la atención. Dentro de un mes se pondrá más vistoso todavía.

To finish here is a picture of my west balcony taken from the street. It is already looking pretty good, but in one month you will see, it will look even better :)

¡Hola de nuevo!! --- Hello there!!

Hace un par de fines de semana, preparamos el desayuno y salimos al balcón este para recolectar los primeros arándanos del año que ya estaban maduros!!!!

About two weekends ago, we prepared breakfast and walked out to our East Balcony to pick up the first harvest of blueberries of the year!! :)

Que suerte, ¡¡¡Todavía quedaban algunas frambuesas!!!! :):)

Oh and look, we still had some raspberries left too :) :)

Una vez más, mi pequeña Lucía estaba encantada por la mañana, no hay como recolectar frutos del bosque de tu balcón para desayunar por la mañana :)

Once more, my little girl Lucia was very happy for breakfast. There is nothing like picking your own wild berries from your city balcony in the morning :)

Otra delicia Canadiense, que ellos llaman 'tostadas francesas'. Con arándanos y frambuesas, todavía más rico todo. Como puedes ver mi balcón oeste estaba muy florido, así que en un par de días escojo unas buenas fotos y te las enseño en detalle :)

Here is a close up of our French toast, breakfast imported from Canada. It is a lot better with blueberries and raspberries of course. As you can see from the back, a whole bunch of new flowers in my West Baclony ! Ok pretty soon I will pick the best pictures and tell you all about it :)

¡¡¡Hola de nuevo!!!! -- Hello there !!!!

De vez en cuando mi mujer y yo nos tomamos un fin de semana libre. Dejamos a los niños con los abuelos y desaparecemos en algún hotel rural. Como son vacaciones de nosotros mismos, pues procuramos no hablar demasiado del trabajo y yo intento no ser muy pesado con mi proyecto de las plantas....pero bueno siempre llevamos la cámara y como no puedo evitar fijarme en los arreglos florales que me encuentro por el camino, pues voy sacando fotos de forma discreta.

El hotel rural tenía un estilo de jardinería espectacular. Fíjate en la entrada, que mezcla más llamativa de plantas, que bien cuidadas y que armonía.

Once in a while my wife and I take a weekend off. We leave our two kids with their grandparents and kind of disappear in a rural hotel, anywhere in Spain. These are holidays of ourselves of course, so we try not to talk much about work, and I try not to talk about my plants project....but I can't help noticing flower arrangements anywhere I go so I discretly take pictures of anything that catches my eye.

The rural hotel we went to had incredible gardening arrangemnts. Checkout this place, what a beatuiful and harmonized mix of plants say hi to you as you enter.

Walking around this rural hotel, I found the gardening was excellent. Lately I tend to really look at gardening arrangements, and this place has the best I have ever seen.

Solo por curiosidad, te dejo el vínculo a la página web de la casa rural. Es buenísima. Nosotros escogimos el hotel porque dedujimos que con el cuidado que le habían puesto en la elaboración, pues que no podía estar mal el cuidado a los huéspedes.

Just out of curiosity, you might want to check out their website. It is pretty good. Actually we chose the hotel because we figured that having prepared such an incredible website, the place had to be well taken care of too.

Estas dos fotos son un detalle de la misma esquina pero vista desde ángulos diferentes. Desde donde mirarás era todo precioso. Estaba decorado con una concentración preciosa de muchas variedades diferentes. Muy barroco, como a mi me gusta :)

These two pictures are a detail of the same corner, seen from two different angles. From everywhere you looked it was beautifully concentrated in an incredible variation of plants. Very barroque, just the way I like it :)

Estas eran las habitaciones, que tenían todas plantas trepadoras. Muy agradable la verdad.

The rooms were all nicely decorated too, they all had nice climbing plants.

Si has entrado en la página web, habrás visto que nos encontramos en la frontera con Portugal, en un área llamada "Sierra de Gata", que pertenece a la comunidad autónoma de Extremadura. Había oido que en esta parte de España la primavera es especialmente colorida y me esperaba algo bonito....pero lo que vimos superó las expectativas.

El primer día estuvimos de gira por los pueblos de la zona. Sitios antiguos y bonitos de ver. Empezamos el dia intentando hacer un camino por el bosque, pero después de una hora estábamos perdidos y nos volvimos. Esta es una foto de un olivo viejo, sobre una pared de piedra y rodeada de florecitas de primavera. Todo lo que veíamos era así de bonito.

If you have checked out the web page, you have seen this place is on the border of Spain and Portugal, in an area called the "Sierra de Gata", belonging to the province of Extremadura. I had heard about spring being quite special and colourful in this part of Spain, so I was expecting some thing nice....but I was in for a surprise.

The first day we went for a tour on surrounding towns. All pretty old places that are always nice to see. We also tried to start with a trail through a forest and walked around for an hour, but had to come back because we were clearly getting lost. This is a picture of a very old olive tree, surrounded by little yellow flowers, on a also very old stone wall.

Antes de decidir que teníamos que dar la vuelta sobe nuestros pasos, paramos a descansar. Esta flor estaba por todas partes. Me llamó mucho la atención. Si sabes como se llama por favor escríbeme y dímelo, que me encantaría conseguir una para intentar cultivarla en casa. Mientras tomaba esta foto, mi mujer me decía:"¿Cariño pero no estás un poco lejos para fotografiarme?" y yo respondía :" Bueno voy a intentarlo que la cámara es muy buena, ya veremos que tal sale" Así fotografiando con discreción para el blog y tal :)

Before deciding to go back on our lost steps, we took a break. This flower was growing everywhere and I found it very nice. If anyone knows it's name, please write me and tell me. I would love to try to grow it at home. While taking this picture, my wife in the back was like: ''Honey aren't you too far away to take a picture of me? " and I was like: "Well let me try from back here, the camera is pretty good you know". Pretty smooth of my part right :)

Bueno así que nos dedicamos ya a visitar los pueblecitos. Creo que el primero es San Martin de Trevejo. Me gustó esta organización de geranios delante del rosal. Bueno y muy importante si vienes por aquí, al lado está el único mercado que encontramos, creo que se llama "Mercado Maribel" y en él compramos un queso llamado "Viejo Maestro"......que cosa más buena. De verdad que merece la pena los más de 300 km desde Madrid solo para traerse un par de kilos de ese queso.:):):)

So we decided to stick to visiting these little towns. The first one was called San Martin de Trevejo. I like this arrangement of pots in front of the roses. Very important if you ever go here, this was right besides the only food store we saw, I think it was called 'Mercado Maribel'. Here we bought this cheese called 'Viejo Maestro'........the cheese was like heaven. I am not kidding it is worth doing more than 300 km from Madrid just to buy it :):):)

Me gustó mucho este balcón lleno de geranios. Simplemente muchos geranios de diferentes colores todos en línea. Sencillo y efectivo sobre un balcón que ya de por sí es bonito.

I liked this very simple array of geraniums. Just a whole bunch of them in different sized pots, but bringing a lot of colour to an already nice balcony.

El siguiente pueblo ya no recuerdo como se llama. Me llamó la atención esta casa, cubierta de maceteros fundamentalmente de geranios y apoyado con rosales en el suelo.

This place I am sorry I do not remember it's name. Quite interesting the array of pots on a very very old house. Mostly geranium and roses again.

Llueve mucho en esta parte de España. Si me enseñan esta foto, no diría que es de un pueblo español.

It rains a lot in this part of Spain. If I saw this picture I would not think it was taken in Spain.

Todos estos pueblos tienen mucha historia, y cada uno su iglesia, que las que vimos se construyeron hace unos 800 años. En la entrada de esta iglesia había unos rosales muy bonitos. Cuando le enseñe la foto a mi mujer me pregunto : " ¿Oye y por que hay dos fotos, una en la que salgo borrosa, y el rosal sale bien, y en la otra salgo bien, pero el rosal borroso....?" Ante lo que respondí, :" Bueno es que la cámara tiene muchos botones y todavía no la controlo del todo" Buena salida verdad?

All these little towns have their own churches, normally built like 800 years ago. This one had these lovely roses just hanging. When I showed the picture to my wife she was like: " Why are there two pictures, one where I am blurry and the plant is perfectly zoomed, and when were I am OK?" and I was like : "Well honey because I am still learning to use our fancy camera and I still do not know how to use all the bottons" Still pretty smooth eh :)

Otra vista del rosal pero desde la iglesia. Me llamó la atención que todos estos puelbos tenían muchos rosales. Quedaban muy bien pues en general eran viejos y grandes, bien atados y adornando antiguas paredes de piedra .

Here is another view from the church. It called my attention that the towns we sawa were all full of roses. As you can see, this plant was pretty old, and you could see a lot of them everywhere, big old rose plants held up against old stone buildings. Pretty nice indeed.

Seguimos viajando de pueblo en pueblo. De repente nos encontramos con este campo...tuve que dejar de ser discreto con las fotos de flores y paramos el coche.

We kept on driving around, from town to town. All of a sudden we saw this field......had to stop, could not be discreet here about taking flower pictures....although my wife was showing signs of realizing what I was doing already.

Empece a hacer fotos, intentando conseguir la típica foto perfecta para fondo de ordenador. Así que si te gusta alguna de dejes de escribirme que te envío encantado la original. Estas pesan unos 300 kb, y las originales 1 0 2 Mb.

I started shooting, trying my best to take on of those pictures you can put on your computer. If you like any of these, please write me and I can send it to you in a higher definition. these are like 300 kb and the orginals have 1 or 2 Mb.

De repente mi mujer gritó :" Cuidado Jaime hay un lobo ahi mirándote con cara de pocos amigos"... bueno la verdad es que en vivo el perro era inmenso, y junto con el gato estaban mirándome con cara de hambre y poco amigos. Así que le respondí :" ¿Te importa echarles un vistazo mientras hago un par de fotos?". Y respondió :" Pues claro, tú haz fotos que yo hago guardia por si se acercan"

All of a sudden my wife cried out :" Jaime watch out, that big dog-wolf and his wild cat friend are staring at you....they look fierce". And yes, they did look scary, and big, and hungry.....So I asked my lovely wife :" Well can you just take a look at them while I finish with one or two more pictures?". She answered: " Why of course honey, keep taking pictures while I stand guard for you"

Así que tranquilo con mi vida en manos de mi adorada esposa, seguí haciendo fotos. No es que desconfíe, pero de vez en cuando preguntaba: "¿Cómo va eso? ¿las fieras no se mueven?"

So while my life was safe in my wife's hands, I took some more pictures. I was totally concentrated, not thinking of the dog wolf, but I would ask my wife :" How are the wild beasts? Still looking at me?"

Y mi mujer respondía:" No se han movido, tú sigue a lo tuyo que yo vigilo" y de eso que notas como que la voz es distante....cómo si estuviera hablando hacia otro lado...y efectivamente, ahí estaba recogiendo flores para llevar a casa y diciendo :" Cariño, haz fotos tranquilo que yo vigilo"...ja ja ja supongo que me lo merecía:):)

And my wife was answering :" Yes honey, don't worry, I am looking straight at the animals and everything is fine" But her voice seemed like kind of far away, like facing the other direction. So I looked up and there she was, picking a bouquet of wild spring flowers to take home ha ha ha I guess I had it coming. :)

Bueno nos reímos un poco y terminé con un par de fotos más.

Well we had a laugh about that, and I took two more pictures and we kept on going to the next town.

Sin preocuparme ya por ser discreto haciendo fotos de flores, me llamó la atención esta jardinera. Había varias en un bar que estaba en unas piscinas naturales muy agradables en las que terminamos el día. El caso es que a veces la jardinería es más sencilla de lo que parece. Aqui hay una jardinera de 60 cm con tres geranios, cada una de un color diferente. El efecto es muy bonito.

Without worrying about being discreet anymore, I took a picture of this pot at these natural swiming pools we visited to finish the day. Just to remember how easy it is sometimes to have a nice pot. This is just a 60 cm pot with thre geranium plants, one of each colour. Very easy and very effective.

¡¡Hola de nuevo!!! --- Hello there !!!

He tenido mucho trabajo últimamente, menos mal que mi amigo Iñaqui me ha enviado un par de fotos de su jardín urbano. ¡Le han brotado los lilium y tagetes que puse en el macetero de su limonero!!!

I have been really busy lately. It's a good thing my friend Iñaqui sent me some pictures of his urban garden. Check out his lilium and marygold, all open and beautiful !!!!

Iñaqui tiene una terraza pequeña, pero muy bien arreglada en el centro de Madrid y con unas vistas espectaculares. Le ayudé el mes pasado con las plantas. Ya tenía un limonero y le puse unos lilium (de cosecha propia que me sobraban del año pasado) y unos tagetes, o claveles chinos como se llaman popularmente. Estas son dos fotos tomadas unos días después de la instalación. Todavía no había florecido nada.

Iñaqui has a small but very nicely decorated terrace in the heart of Madrid. He has incredible views as you can see. Last month I helped him out with his plants. He already had a lemon tree, but I added some plants on the pot: some lilium (grown by me) and some marygold. These two pictures are taken after I set up his urban garden. As you can see there were no flowers yet.

Aquí aparece el pie del macetero, dos semanas después, con las plantas en flor.

Here is a close up, two weeks later with all flowers in bloom.

Comentaba en el post que puse el mes pasado en el que explicaba un poco el montaje, que Iñaqui tiene mucha mano con las plantas. Estos claveles chinos están espectaculares.

As I explained in last month´s post where I showed the rest of his urban garden, Iñaqui is pretty good with plants. Check out this close up of the marygold, they are just perfect !!!!!

Eso es todo. He estado viajando y trabajando bastante últimamente, preparando algún jardín urbano también. Así que espero empezar a publicar un poco más en estos días siguientes :)

That´s it. I have been travelling a lot lately, working quite hard and also setting up some nice urban gardens. Well now I am slowly going back to my daily routine, so I hope to catch up and post a lot on the next few days!!!! :)

¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!! --- Hello there!!!

¡¡¡Es época de frambuesas en el balcón este!!!! Lucía está encantada, todos los sábados preparamos un buen desayuno y salimos al balcón a por frambuesas. Las recogemos en el balcón este, y las comemos en el balcon oeste, que como ves está muy hermoso. :)

It's raspberry harvest time in the city!!! Lucía loves it. Every Saturday we prepare a big breakfast and we pick some raspberries from our East Balcony. Then we eat them in our West Balcony, which looks pretty good in June.

Te acordarás que en el último post no pude fotografiar las frambuesas con las tortitas....porque una pequeña se las comió todas mientras se terminaban de hacer las tortitas :) Este sábado he preparado primero las tortitas, y luego hemos ido a por las frambuesas!!!!!

You might remember from another post that I was not able to take a picture of the raspberries on the pancake because a little raspberry monster in the house ate them all while I was finishing the pancakes...well this time I learnt my lesson, prepared first the pancakes and then we went to pick the raspberries :)

Me gusta fotografiar nuestras frambuesas....porque luego no duran nada en la mesa :)

I like to take pictures of the raspberries, because they do not last long on the table.... :)

Gigante amarylis --- Humongous Amarylis

¡¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!!! ---- Hello there !!!!

Hace un par de años compré un bulbo de amarylis, atraido por el tamaño espectacular de las flores. El año pasado se dió bien, y lo cierto es que este año se ha dado mejor todavía. Aquí está a principios de mayo, en un día lluvioso, las dos flores a punto de abrirse.

Last year I bought this bulb plant called amarylis because it has the biggest flowers I have ever seen. Last year it turned out all right, and this year has been even better. Here you have it at the beginning of May on a rainy day, the flowers about to open up.

El sol tiene un efecto mágico en las plantas. Dejó de llover y en seguida las flores se abrieron.

The sun has like a magical effect on flowers. It had been a rainy week, it became sunny and the flowers opened up right away.

A esta planta le gusta la luz pero no demasiado sol directo. Está colocada en mi balcón este que recibe sol por las mañanas, pero la jardinera del fondo está más tapada y es la que recibe menos horas de luz. En esta foto se ven las jardineras algo desangeladas, con poco color. A veces ocurre, que algunas flores se van, y otras todavía no han llegado. Pero bueno así la amarylis era la reina del balcón :)

This plant needs light, but not too much direct sunlight. I have it on a balcony that faces East, so it does get direct sun in the mornings. HoweverI have on the pot on the far right and it is the one that gets less hours a day of direct sunlight because of this big wall on its right.

As you can see there were not many open flowers at this moment. It happens sometimes, flowers come and go and once in a while you get a 'only green' period. But that is OK, some pansies were there and also this way the amarylis was the queen of the balcony :)

Los pensamientos siempre están ahí, pero a veces con otras flores pasan desapercibidos.

A close up on the red pansies. They are always there and sometimes with other flowers you do not even notice them anymore.

Me cuenta mi amigo Pablo que esta planta se llama popularmente, la suegra y la nuera, porque cada pareja crece forzosamente juntas, pero cada una mirando hacia otro lado. ja ja ja :)

In Spain we call this plant ''la suegra y la nuera'', which means ''the mother in law and the daughter in law''. The reason is the pair of flowers are stuck together but are always looking different ways ha ha ha :)

Al cabo de los días, las flores se pasaron. Pero ya te he contado que este año se ha dado mejor que el pasado verdad !! El año pasado me dio una pareja de flores, pero este año me ha dado una segunda pareja !!!! Esta claro que es una buena inversión :):)

A few more days went by and the flowers dried up. Remember I have told you this year has been better than last year. Well last year I only had one pair of flowers, but this year I got a second pair !!! A pretty good investment if you ask me !!! :)

Poco a poco, empezaron a brotar más flores en la jardinera, y se convirtió en una combinación bien bonita.

Some more flowers bloomed on the pot, making it a nice combination.

Esta florecita es de una planta bulbosa llamada oxalis. Creo que la compré hace unos diez años y todos los años brota de nuevo. Una sobreviviente nata.

This little pink flower belongs to a bulb plant called oxalis. I bought it more than ten years ago. It is an annual plant, and comes out every year. Quite a survivor.

La gigante amarylis hace diminutas al resto de las flores.

Giant amarylis makes the rest of flowers look tiny.

Estoy feliz como una perdiz, pues fíjate lo que aparece en la pg 256 del Cosmopolitan del mes de junio: foto del balcón oeste, con consejos de Jaime para tu terraza !!!! :):):)

I couldn't be happier, on Spain's June version of the Cosmopolitan, you can see on pag 256, a picture of the west balcony, with tips by Jaime for your terrace :):):) Sorry but it's all in Spanish.

Te voy a contar un poco la historia de la foto. En el mes de marzo ya sabía que a finales de mes, o a principios de abril, vendrían a hacer una foto a la terraza....así que nervios es poco. En el fondo, no tenía mucho que hacer salvo cuidar las plantas con cariño. Las jardineras las suelo preparar en enero para que florezcan de forma escalonada de enero a julio. Pero claro, una cosa es preparlas pensando en como van a ir creciendo y floreciendo en los siguientes meses, y otra es que las planas te hagan caso. Así que confieso que andaba algo preocupado por si justo en el momento de la foto me pillaba entre floración y floración.

Coincidió con la época en la que estaba hablando con mi amigo Iñaqui sobre su jardín urbano, y en el primer viaje que hice al vivero a ver la oferta de la temporada no pude evitar hacer una comprita. Normalmente no compro bajo impulso, pero me encontré con las primeras agaethe amelloides de la temporada y me llevé una macetita.

Let me tell you about the making of the picture. By March I already knew that by the end of the month, or maybe beginning of April, someone would come to take a picture of the terrace......so to say I felt excited is a gross understatement. The truth is, there was not much to be done except take care of the plants. I had prepared the pots in January with a whole bunch of plants already, with the idea to have them grow and bloom along the months. Only thing is plants do not alwasy do what you expect them to do, and I was concerned the day of the picture would come and no flowers to show........

Well this was the time I had just seen my friend Iñaqui and we were talking about preparing his urban garden. So on the first visit to the plant shop I just couldn't help buying this beautiful plant. It is called agaethe amelloides.

Es una planta algo delicada pero tiene una flor preciosa. La tuve en el otro balcón hace un par de años, así que tenía curiosidad por ver como se comportaba en el balcón oeste. La coloqué en un hueco en esta jardinera del la terraza oeste, donde ibamos a hacer la foto.

It is kind of delicate. I had it two years ago on the East balcony and I was wondering how it would work out here under more sunny and windy conditions. I found a little spot to add it on this pot. so here you have one of the pots that shows on the picture. This is ten days before the picture.

Ya te he contado en algún post anterior que el mes de abril ha sido muy caluroso. Fíjate que cambio en solo diez días de esta jardinera. La foto de abajo es del día que se hizo la foto.

As I have told you on earlier posts, April has been a pretty hot month and plants have been under constant change. Check out the trasnformation in only ten days. This is the day of the picture.

Yo veía que pasaban los días y que las flores más bonitas se me pasaban. Esta es una foto que saqué del jacinto, que está a la izquierda de la jardinera, como ves estaba muy hermoso, pero el día de la foto ya no se había secado todo.....

As the big picture day approached, I saw a whole bunch of lovely, colourful flowers dry up under the amazing sun. For example this beautiful hyacinth totally dried up before the picture.

Compré también otras dos plantas. Son las que se ven a la izquierda de esta otra jardinera de la terraza oeste. La petunia, que era de las primeras de la temporada, y una dimorphoteca. Estas se ven mucho por la zona de levante, pero en Madrid están menos a gusto, creo que no les gusta el invierno de aquí . Tenía ganas de probarla en este balcón, por que supuse que con el calor que estaba haciendo se sentiría a gusto.

Oh and on the same day I went shopping I also got the two plants you can see on the left. A nice petunia, one of the first of the season, and a dimorphoteca. I see these in the South of Spain all over the place, but in Madrid they are not so happy because it gets a bit cold for them in winter time. Anyways I had grown one on the East balcony about two years ago and I was wondering how it would do on this one. Since it was so warm already I figured it would be OK.

De nuevo en solo 10 días hubo un cambio importante en la jardinera. La dimorphoteca se adaptó muy bien al clima caluroso, pero por ejemplo los pensamientos de la derecha se me pusieron feuchos, el jacinto y el narciso se secaron.

Again you can see the incredible trasnformation in only 10 days. The dimorphoteca was doing pretty good, but the pansies, daffodil and hyacinth dried up.

Una última comparativa sobre los cambios que pasó la terraza justo diez días antes de la foto. Estaba llena de color, pero llego de repente el calor y muchas flores pasaron su mejor momento....

Just a last comparison of the changes in the last 10 days before picture day. I confess I was getting a bit concerned, I had sooo much colour in my terrace, and it was all dissapearing......

Esta jardinera del fondo por ejemplo, pasó en diez días de tener muchas flores, a perderlas todas. Es normal porque las flores tienen sus ciclos....pero ya era mala suerte que justo el día de la foto estaba así !!!

This pot did not show in the picture, it lost all its flowers.......

Los narcisos llegaron todos secos. Aquí se ve unos diez días antes de la foto.....¡¡¡estaba en su mejor momento!!!

The daffodils made it all dry to the picture day. Here you have one like ten days before, it was such a beauty !!!

Bueno pero no todo eran desgracias, los tulipanes negros florecieron y estaban bien hermosos, el día de la foto, el geranio blanco también florecía hermoso, y menos mal que la dimorphoteca se encontraba a gusto en la terraza :)

But you know what, even though some flowers didn't make it, others suddenly opened up. For example the beautiful black tulips made it jus in time :) :)

Llegó el gran día. Me fui al frutero a comprar fruta, puse un bonito mantel, y los cubiertos y platos más bonitos que encontré por la casa. Llegó la fotógrafa a casa. Fue increible ver a un fotógrafo profesional en acción. Al principio Ximena no parecía muy entusiasmada con el proyecto. Empezó a buscar ángulos y yo observaba con auténtica cara de pardillo. De repente encontró el encuadre perfecto. Me enseño la primera foto y me quede flipado. No lo habría hecho en mil años.

''Está bien bien pero no le hago justicia a tu terraza. Oye que pasada de flores tienes no?''- dijo..... Empezaba la magia. Se me ocurrió traer algún macetero del otro balcón, para rellenar un poco.

Finally the bid day arrived. I walked down to buy some nice fruit and set the table the best I could. Took out our finest table cloth and our nicest looking bowls and plates. The milk bottle is the bottle we use for water everyday. I had never seen a professional photographer in action and I was quite impressed. At first Ximena did not seem so thrilled. She started looking for the right angle. Finally she got it and showed it to me. Wow, I could not have found it in a thousand years!!!!!

''Gee it looks nice but it seems nicer live than in the camera...hey you have incredible flowers don't you?" and the magic started. I went to the other balcony to bring some more pots so she could choose and move them around.

Esta jardinera es del balcón este, y aquí también sufrió una transformación, pero creo que mejoró. Fíjate como estaba diez días antes de la foto.

El día de la foto, justo justito, había florecido la primera iris de la temporada. Claro este macetero era bonito y lo pusimos al pie de la mesa.

In this case it got better, just two days before picture day, the first Iris bloomed. :)

Empecé a traer los maceteros redondos. Creo que aquí ya Ximena empezaba a disfrutar con el resultado de la foto.

I kept on bringing more pots from the other balcony to fill in. Here I could tell Ximena started enjoying the picture.

En este caso fue una pena. Diez días antes estaban los tulipanes amarillos, negros y jacintos espectaculares.

In this case, with the round pots it was a pity. Here you have it ten days before the picture, with yellow and black tulips, and a daffodil.....

Pero ya ves aquí como los tulipanes amarillos se habían secado ya. Los jacintos también estaban bastante secos, pero como dijo Ximena con razón, aunque estén secos, aportan luz a la foto.

.....and on picture day the yellow tulips were gone...oh well you can't win them all......

Para terminar, y aunque lo colocamos en una esquinita para rellenar, uno de mis jardineras favoritas, la que tiene el arbolito de arándanos.

To finish, the last pot I brought over to the picture is actually one of my favourites. It is the one with the blueberry plant.

De nuevo te muestro la transformación que sufrío en esos díez días de calor intenso antes de la foto.

Again it went through quite a trasnformation in only ten days. It lost it's blue muscari.....

Aunque perdió los muscari azules del centro, para el día de la foto se puso bien hermosa :)

....but it got a yellow and white flowers and also a lot of green :)

Las florecitas blancas, en estos momentos son unos arándanos casi maduros.

These white flowers you see here in this picture in April, are right now blueberries, just about ready for harvest...oh but I will tell you all about that pretty soon :)

Traje las otras jardineras y estuvimos un buen rato. Ximena me iba indicando y yo iba moviendo las jardineras.

Poco a poco la foto iba cogiendo forma, los tulipanes y jacintos en línea, por bajo la mesa rodeada de verde y color. Un pequeño truco, me coloqué en la izquierda de la foto con un mantel blanco, y de repente como por arte de magia, se reflejaba una luz difuminada sobre la mesa. Yo me lo pasé como un enano. :)

So I brought over all the pots. It was a lot of fun. Ximena would tell me and I would move them about.

Little by little, we found the right place for each pot. The black tulips in line with the daffodils, everything in balance. We even did a little trick, I stood on the left with a white table cloth and the light reflected on the table, in kind of a magic way, making it look nicer. I had the time of my life :)

Mi pequeña de cinco años estaba encantada esta mañana. Hemos recogido las primeras frambuesas del año!! :):):)

My little five year old had a great treat today for breakfast, she got to pick the first raspberries of the season!!! :):)

En esta foto puedes ver como estaban colgando en la jardinera, listos para la recolecta.

In this picture you can see them clearly, nice and ripe, ready for harvest.

Aquí tienes una foto que colgué hace dos días en mi página de facebook. La flor morada que acompaña las frambuesas es de una planta bulbosa que no recuerdo ni cuando la compré, pero se está reproduciendo muy bien, se han multiplicado y este año tengo más que el año pasado. Si vives en Madrid o en un sitio con clima seco la recomiendo pues es una sobreviviente nata. Las planas bulbosas se suelen vender como bulbos en bolsitas en otoño, así que si te quedas con la forma que tiene, la reconocerás para comprarla.

Here is a picture I posted on my facebook page two days ago. The violet bell like flower that accompanies the raspberries is a bulb type plant that I bought about two years ago. Sorry I don't remember it's name, but if you ever see it and you live in a city with a dry climate like Madrid I highly recommend it. They have survived quite well and multipllied themselves, and I honestly haven't taken any special care.

Tengo tres plantas de frutos silvestres, y esta es la primera que da frutos. A continuación te enseño las otras dos.

Esta primera es de otro tipo de frambuesa. Está todavía dando florecitas, que se están polinizado y ya se ven las frambuesas formándose. Como puedes ver las flores no son especialmente bonitas, pero bueno se lo vamos a perdonar verdad ?!!?? :)

I have two other types of wild berry plants growing on my balcony. The first one as you can see is still in the flowering stage. It has little white flowers that are being polinized and turning into raspberries. Not the most beautiful flowers....but we will forgive the plant for that right ?!!?? :):)

La otra es una planta de arándanos. Como el buen vino, estos tardan más en madurar, pues florecieron a la vez que los frambuesos. Todavía les quedan unas tres semanas. Mi pequeña siempre que pasa por el balcón me pregunta si ya se pueden comer... ¡¡¡ es que se acuerda de lo ricos que están todos los años :)!!!

Al fondo puedes ver unas flores amarillas difuminadas...son los lilium que ya se han abierto y el balcón esta espectacular !!!:) pero eso te lo cuento el próximo fin de semana, que esta semana salgo de viaje por Alemania, y no tendré mucho tiempo.

Finally this is my blueberry plant. As you see they blueberries are not ripe yet. They flowered at the same time as the raspberries, but they sure take their time, like good wine. My little one alwasy asks me if they are ready for eating yet, she still remembers how good they were last year !!

In the back you can sort of make out a whole bunch of yellow flowers, they are lilium that just opened up. Actually the balcony looks great right now. But I will tell you all about that next weekend, I have to go on a trip to Germany and will not be able to post anything until I get back.

Lo bueno de ser medio extranjero, es que incorporas a tu dieta las cosas más ricas de los países en los que has vivido. De Canadá aprendí muchas cosas, pero sobre todo a preparar buenos desayunos los fines de semana. Todos los sábados tomamos tortitas, y los domingos lo que ellos llaman tostadas francesas, una especie de torrijas que están deliciosas. Bueno pues la rutina que más le gusta a mi pequeña es salir al balcón por la mañana, recoger las frambuesas, y tomarlas con las tortitas. Quería terminar el post con una foto de la tortita con frambuesas....pero estaban tan buenas y había tantos nervios con las primeras frambuesas....que las hemos puesto en la mesa y han volado. Cuando he vuelto con las tortitas preparadas no quedaba ni una.... Así que me despido con un zoom de las ricas frambuesas crecidas en un balcón de ciudad :)

I was born in Spain but travelled quite a bit as a kid. What is best about living abroad is that you tend to pick the best eating habits and sort of bring them to your daily life. From Canada I got the habit of big breakfasts, which are not common in Spain. On Saturdays it's pancakes and on Sundays its French Toast. My little girl loves the rutine of going to the balcony in the morning, picking out the wild berries, and then putting them on her pancakes. Now my idea was to finish this post with a picture of a delicious pancake with raspberries....but nerves were high today, and when I got back to the table with the pancakes....the raspberries were already gone... :) So I finish with this close up of wild raspberries grown in the city.

El jardín urbano de Iñaqui -- The urban garden of Iñaqui

¡¡¡Hola de nuevo!!!! --- Hello there!!!

Bienvenido a la terraza de mi amigo Iñaqui :) Situada en el corazón de Madrid, ofrece una vista única, mezclando en el horizonte antiguas iglesias con modernos centros comerciales. Es muy pequeñita pero está tan bien arreglada que no echas nada en falta. Un pequeño oasis en la bulliciosa ciudad que te invita a sentarte, a dejar pasar el tiempo y disfrutar de una buena puesta de sol.

Welcome to the terrace of my friend Iñaqui. Right in the heart of Madrid, it has a unique skyline, with a mix of old churches and modern buildings. It is very small but so well arranged you don't miss a thing. An oasis in the busy city that invites you to sit back, relax and enjoy a good sunset.

Con estas dos fotos desde la entrada, mirando a la izquierda y al frente, ¡ya has visto toda la terraza! Tiene una tumbona, una mesa con dos sillas y una sombrilla para los días de sol. Es pequeña pero recibe muchas visitas, sobre todo en verano cuando proyectan películas sobre una fachada colindante.

Hace dos meses Iñaqui nos invitó a un aperitivo a su terraza, y entre tapa y tapa me pidió ayuda para añadir algunas plantas más y aportar un poco más de color. Todo un reto mejorar lo presente, tenía ya un jazmín falso, un limonero y alguna pequeña trepadora de las que cuida muy bien. Bueno pues te voy a enseñar como ha quedado su jardín urbano, en el corazón de la ciudad.

With these two pictures, looking to the left and forward as you walk in....¡you got the whole terrace! It has a deck chair, a sun umbrella, a table and two chairs. Small but it gets pretty crowded, specially in summer time when they proyect movies on the wall of a nearby building :)

About two months ago Iñaqui invited us over for some tapas and he asked me for help. He wanted a few more plants, just to add a llittle bit of colour. Honestly I wasn't sure what to do because he already hada a 'fake jazmin' as we call them here, a lemon tree, and a little climbing plant. All in great shape because he takes excellent care of plants. We talked about what he wanted and now I would like to show you how it turned out. Let's take a look at Iñaki's urban garden, in the heart of the city.

Si andamos al frente y nos damos la vuelta al lado de la mesa, vemos la entrada, que es donde Iñaki quería las plantas. Bueno y realmente es el único sitio en el que había espacio para incorporar algo :) Demos una vuelta y te cuento un poco.

So if you walk three steps and turn around besides the table, you can look back upon the entrance. This is where Iñaqui wanted the new plants...well and also the only place left where we could add something :) Let me show you around.

La maceta amarilla del suelo estaba en la terraza, lo cual ha venido bien pues es grande y bonita. He puesto tres plantas. Una buganvilla blanca, que es una planta trepadora y esperamos que con el tiempo cubra la pared. La buganvilla no se siente del todo a gusto en el clima de Madrid y requiere cuidados especiales, por ejemplo en invierno conviene cubrirla con un plástico transparente. La foto de abajo es un zoom de la alyssum, que es la planta de la flor blanca y que hará haciendo un bonito colgando sobre la maceta, y la margarita azul y amarilla, que se llama agaethea amelloides. Esta segunda también es algo delicada, pero ya os he dicho que Iñaqui tiene mano con las plantas.

The big yellow pot was already there, which is good because it is big and quite nice. I added three plants. The tall one is a bugainvillea, and the idea is that it will climb all over the wall. Now this plant is not very happy in Madrid weather and it will need some special care, like covering it up with a transparent plastic to protect it from the cold winter wind. The picture is a close up of the two other plants. The white flowers belong to an alyssum, which smells very nice and will sort grow out and hang with elegance over the pot. The blue flowers belong to a agaethea amelloides. This one is also a bit delicate, but as I said Iñaqui is good with plants.

Si nos acercamos a la pared podemos apreciar de cerca una flor de buganvilla.

If we walk over to the wall, we can take a closer look at a bougainvillea flower.

Las dos flores que se ven borrosas en la foto de arriba son dos petunias. Los maceteros colgantes ya estaban en la pared. De nuevo una suerte pues son bonitos y tenían el tamaño perfecto. Las petunias crecerán y serán dos puntos de luz en la pared blanca. Las plantas trepadoras de la izquierda ya estaban en la casa y tienen como objetivo principal en su vida cubrir todos esos cables:) . Me gusta esta chimenea con flores de colores y un fondo urbano.

The two colourful blurs on the other picture are these petunias on the left wall. The two white hanging pots were already there. Again lucky for me because they are quite elegant. The petunias will grow quite a bit and become two colouful spots in the completely white wall. The climbing plants on the left wall were already there. They have one purpose in life, which is to cover up all those cables :) Well I like this chimney with colourful flowers and all the big city buildings in the back, very urban picture.

Finalmente mi mayor aportación. Iñaqui quería unas jardineras para dar algo de altura y tapar un poco la terraza. Dada la armonía de la terraza, las jardineras no podían ser de cualquier forma o color. Estuve buscando y encontré estas de color marrón y totalmente cúbicas. Son sencillas y elegantes. El plástico es algo especial también, es bonito.

Well and finally my biggest contribution. Iñaqui wanted some pots right there to sort of make the terrace look taller, and also get a bit more privacy. I had to look around because not any normal pots would suit his terrace. These brown ones look pretty good. They are simply cubic and have a nice texture. Kind of quality plastic.

Te enseño los maceteros de derecha a izquierda. He usado una combinación de plantas que aguantan bien el sol, pues aquí estarán todo el día. A la derecha una aromática famosa: lavanda. En junio ofrecerá flores violetas que creceran de forma espigada. A su lado una dimorphoteca que dará flores muy vistosas, recordando a las margaritas. Colgando hay una calibrochoa, que seguramente crecerá y colgará más todavía. La planta verde clarito es una aromática llamada santolina, que dará unas florecitas amarillas con forma de botoncitos en el mes de junio.

Let' take a look at the pots one by one. These are all plants that can take on many hours a day of direct sunlight. On the right is a famous aromatic: lavander. It will grow violet flowers in June. Right besides it is a dimorphoteca, that gives a lot of flowers that resemble daisies. The plant that sort of hangs is a calibrochoa, and it will probably grow and hang a lot lower. The next one, kind of a lighter shade of green is another aromatic called santolina. It will bloom yellow button like flowers in June.

La jardinera central es simétrica. Tiene una lavanda en el centro, que crecerá alta y espigada con flores de color violeta. A cada lado, un geranio blanco y un alyssum blanco, de manera que ambos colgarán en el macetero.

The center pot is symetrical. In the center it has another lavander plant, accompanied by a white geranium and a white alyssum on each side. The idea here is to have the tall violet lavander in the center, acompanied on each side with white hanging flowers.

El macetero de la izquierda tiene el diseño espejo que el de la derecha, cambiando solo el color de alguna flor.

The pot on the left has a mirror pattern with the one on the right. I only changed the colour of some flowers.

Ahora si te giras sobre ti mismo, puedes ver el limonero de la esquina en el que he añadido unas plantas en el macetero.

And now if you turn around you can check out these plants I have added on the pot of the lemon tree.

Las plantas más altas son lilium, y darán unas flores amarillas en el mes de julio. Estas no las he comprado, son de cosecha propia, crecidos de bulbos que se duplicaron el año pasado. Las plantas bajas son tagetes que también darán flores amarillas. Debajo de un arbol limonero…pues flores amarillas claro :)

Normalmente me gusta hacer maceteros con muchas plantas, muy barrocos, como dice mi amigo Pablo, pero en este caso he dejado algo de espacio libre pues me preocupaba 'asfixiar' al limonero. Dejemos que se acostumbre a tener nuevos vecinos en la superficie, y en otoño plantaremos una buena batería de bulbos, para tener una explosión de color a finales de invierno.

The tall ones are lilium, grown by myself from bulbs that kind of multiplied themselves last year. The smaller ones placed in front are marigold. They will also have yellow flowers. Hey under a lemon tree it has to be colour yellow of course :)

Normally I like to really concentrate plants on the pots, my buddy Pablo defines it a barroque style. However this time I left some free space on purpose. I was a bit concerned about the tree not 'breathing' properly. Let's let it get used to having neighbours on the surface, and in fall we will bury some nice bulbs to have an explosion of colour in late winter.

Bueno y ahora prepárate para una sorpresa. ¿te he dicho ya que la terraza de Iñaki es algo especial verdad? ¡Atención atención, asómate al balcón! A tus pies, en el corazón de Madrid, un campo de cultivo cuidado por monjas de clausura !!!!!!!!!

All right, are you ready for a surprise? I told you this was a special place right?!!!! Well lean over and take a look ……… at your feet, in the heart of Madrid, a field of crops grown by nuns!!!!!!!

Se trata del Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. Es increíble que haya algo así en el centro de Madrid. A veces me pregunto cuantas ofertas les habrán hecho, este terreno vale una fortuna. Pero claro, si llevan ahí 500 años, pues tampoco habrá motivo para irse :) Está situada en el solar justo debajo de la terraza de Iñaqui.

It is the Monastery of the Desacalzas Reales, right undernith the terrace.I find it incredible. I can't imagine the offers they must have received, that terrain is worth a fortune!!!!! But hey, they have been there for 500 years, so why not stay a bit more ? :)

Iñaqui cuenta que visitó la casa en venta, subió a la terraza. A pesar de que estaba en mal estado fue amor a primera vista. Vio el convento, miró hacia el horizonte, sacó el móvil y llamó a su madre: ''mamá, acabo de encontrar mi casa, compro ahora mismo ja ja ja voy a hacer una locura si quieres pararme ven aquí corriendo''

Iñaqui says that on the first visit to the house, which was for sale, he came up and it was love at first sight. The terrace was a mess but he looked down at the convent, looked up at the skyline, took out his cell phone and called his mom: ' mom I found my house, I am going to buy right now! If you want to stop your son from doing something crazy come over right now!!!! '

Para terminar estas dos fotos, antes del arreglo….y después del arreglo. Creo que la terraza estará todavía más hermosa en un mes cuando las plantas estén más desarrolladas…Iñaki me comentó algo de una barbacoa épica….a ver si es verdad que estoy deseando disfrutar una puesta de sol en este precioso jardín urbano:)

I think the terrace will look even better in a month when the plants grow a bit more. I recall Iñaqui did say something about having an epic barbacue……well let me just remind you my friend, I am dying to enjoy a sunset in your beautiful urban garden :)

Las 5 fases de duelo por mi frambueso -- The 5 steps of mourning over my raspberry plant

Recordarás de algún post anterior que este año estoy haciendo un pequeño experimento con dos frambuesos. Los he puesto en la zona más luminosa del balcón, pero bajándolos al suelo para recibir luz de forma indirecta. Los he tansplantado juntos a un macetero único, para además poder regarlos un poco más y mantener su tierra más húmeda de lo que estaría si conviviera con otras plantas. Como puedes ver en esta foto, el 29 de abril estaban estupendos. Fíjate sobre todo en el de la derecha....que hojas más grandes, verdes y hermosas tenía :) Una planta en perfecto estado y que daba gusto admirarla :)

You might remember from an earlier post that this year I am doing a little experiment with two of my raspberry plants. I have placed them in the sunniest part of the balcony, but lowered them to the floor to receive indirect sunlight through the bamboo fence. I have also put them together in one pot in order to water them a bit more and keep the soil a bit more humid than I would if they were with other plants. As you can see on the 29 th April they were doing just fine. Specially take a look at the one on the right, check out the big leaves, what a healthy shade of green they have :) It was a wonder to look at :)!!:)

Además fíjate que flores estupendas que en un par de meses se iban a convertir en deliciosos frambuesos :) :)

And please take a close look at these beautiful flowers, that in about two months were going to become delicious raspberries :) :)

El 4 de mayo salí al balcón y me encontré esta escena.....¡No podía ser, mi frambueso estaba seco!!!! Lo primero de todo me negué a aceptarlo. A veces ocurre que las plantas de una jardinera se deshidratan después de una tarde de sol fuerte y se quedan así como un poco flácidas. Toqué la tierra y efectivamente estaba muy seca, así que regué y esperé un par de horas. La verdad es que esto me ha ocurrido antes, así que no le día mayor importancia.

On the fourth of may I went out to my balcony and found this awful scene.... My raspberry plant was all dry!!! I went straight into the phase of denial. No way my plant was dead. It does happen sometimes that after a sunny afternoon plants dehydrate and sort of fall on themselves. I touched the soil and it was very dry, so I watered and expected the plant to recover in one or two hours..... I mean like I have seen that happen before.

Al día siguiente, la planta estaba igual, la tierra húmeda y la planta no se recuperaba...Pasé a la siguiente fase que fue enfadarme mucho con el mundo. ¡No tenía sentido! Justo el día antes, habíamos estado unos amigos del trabajo esperando en la puerta a la hora de comer porque estaba diluviando!!!! Como había llovido tanto esa tarde ni salí a mirar las plantas, dí por hecho que estaban todas bien regadas.

Next day the soil was nice and damp, but the plant was just as dry. So I went straight into the phase of anger. Why did this happen to me?? I was very upset with the world. I mean like the day before it had rained really hard. I took this picture while some friends and I from work were waiting for the rain to stop before going out for lunch. Of course that afternoon I did not check on my plants to water them because I figured they were all soaken wet.

La tercera fase de duelo por mi frambueso por la que pasé fue la de realizar el diagnostico (con plantas ya ves que las fases del duelo son un poco diferentes) Descubrí dos razones para la sequía de la maceta. La primera es que al estar un poco recogido y tener una terraza en la planta de arriba, pues cuando llueve la maceta no se moja.

La segunda razón es importante y quiero compartirla por si te ayuda a evitar una pérdida en un macetero grande. ¡¡¡ Llevo 20 años cuidando plantas y no paro de aprender cosas !!! Cuando regué la planta al verla toda seca me llamó la atención que el agua tardó mucho en llegar al plato de abajo. De hecho tuve que echar bastante agua hasta que salió por el plato inferior. Eso significa que aunque la tierra de la parte de arriba estaba húmeda, por abajo estaba totalmente seca. . La forma de evitar esto es de vez en cuando regar hasta que el agua sale por el platito de abajo. Yo esto casi nunca lo hacía, regaba y me fijaba en la superficie, cuando estaba húmeda pues ya paraba de regar. La próxima vez que le prepare la terraza a algún amigo, haré unas fotos para que se vea que hay que hacer para asegurar que una maceta tiene buen drenaje y el agua no se queda estancada.

The third phase I went through is diagnosis (well as you see with plants the phases of mourning are slightly different). I discovered two reasons for my pot being dry. The first one was easy. The way it was placed on the balcony, with another terrace on top, when it rains it is actually coverd and does not get wet.

The second reason is quite important and I want to share it just in case it helps you save a plant placed on a big pot. You know I have been taking care of plants on terraces for over 20 years now...and I still learn thigns!!! As I watered the plant when I saw it was all dry it called my attention that it took a lot of water before I saw it coming out of the plate on the bottom. Then it hit me, the bottom part of the pot was totally dry. I was watering regularily but I was only checking out the surface. If the surface was humid, well I stopped. Big mistake, once in a while you have to water and keep on watering until water comes out the bottom plate. That is the only way to make sure the whole pot receives water.

La cuarta fase: bajón depresivo. Cuando cuidas plantas y estas te duran un tiempo les coges cariño. Así que andaba yo por la oficina con cara triste, y la gente me preguntaba - pero Jaime que te pasa?- y yo contestaba - nada nada, es la alergia que me quita la energía...-- claro a quien le iba a importar mi frambueso...pobre de mí...... y así iba yo arrastrando los pies por la vida. Si es que pasaban los días y el frambueso no remontaba cabeza....

Then I reached the fourth phase which is total depression. When you take care of plants, specially the ones that stay with you for some time, well you end up kind of liking them. So I was feeling sorry for myself, not talking much, and at work people would be like - Hey Jaime what's with the long face?-- and I was like - Oh just this hay fever that takes all my energy away- So there I was, the days going by and my raspberry plant looking worse every day......

Bueno y por fín llegó el momento de aceptarlo, la quinta fase del duelo. Mala suerte he perdido una planta. Estas cosas pasan y lo importante es que he aprendido la lección. Con un macetero grande, de vez en cuando hay que regar a conciencia, asegurándose que el agua atraviesa todo el macetero y cae por el platito de abajo. La semana que viene iré al vivero, que mi amiga Isis me ha pedido ayuda con su jardín urbano y aprovecharé para comprar otro arbustro frutal.

Finally I reached the final phase of accepetance. Bad luck I lost a plant. It happens sometimes but what is important is to learn a leason and not do it again. If ever you have a big pot, you have to make sure that once in a while you water it thouroughly, until the water comes all the way down to the bottom plate. My friend Isis has asked me for help for an urban garden, so next week I will go shopping for plants and get a new raspberry plant.

Me fascina esta flor. Pertenece a una planta trepadora llamada clematis y alegra mi balcón oeste de primavera a otoño. Me gusta porque tiene una estructura compleja y unos pétalos aterciopelados. Una flor especial.

I am fascinated with this flower. It belongs to a climbing plant called clematis. From spring to fall, it really cheers up my West Balcony. I specially like it because it has a kind of complex structure, but with this sort of velvet delicate look on its petals. Quite a special flower indeed.

Tengo la planta en una esquina del balcón. Por si la ves en el vivero y tela quieres comprar, pues te voy a enseñar como se ha desarrollado en los últimos dos meses. Empiezo con el 10 marzo. Simplemente se ve que ya ha sacado sus hojitas.

I have it growing on a corner of my Balcony. I am going to show you how it has evolved, so if you would like to get one yourself you know what to expect from it. First this picture of the 9th March. As you can see it has already grown its leaves.

El 31 de marzo, el macetero de abajo está ofreciendo algo de color, con un par de tulipanes amarillos y un jacinto rosa.

On the 31st March, you can see the pot is quite colourful with its two yellow tulips and a small pink hyacinth.

El 9 abril aparecen las primeras flores. Si miras con detenimiento, verás en la maceta un tulipán negro que crece torcido, buscando la luz.

On the 9th April the first flowers show up. If you look closely on the pot, you can see a black tulip growing crooked, searching for the light.

21 abril, las flores de clematis ya están preciosas. En la maceta hay una alyssum, que cuelga con elegancia y ya empieza a animarse y ofrece florecitas blancas.

21st April, the flowers of the clematis are looking great. You can see small white flowers on the alyssum that hangs gracefully from the pot.

Te habrás dado cuenta de que hay flores de dos colores. No es una planta bicolor !!! Se trata de dos plantas diferentes en el mismo macetero. Inicialmente me imaginé que se cruzarían entre ellas, pero curiosamente una de las plantas ha crecido muy alta, y la otra se ha quedado más abajo.

You have probably noticed that there are two colours of flowers. No it is not a unique bi-coloured flowering plant !! Simply two plants placed in the same pot. At first I imagined that they would grow together and mix themselves, but for some strange reason the white one has grown up high and the red one has kept a little lower.

Para terminar esta foto que me gusta porque se ven las flores de los dos colores juntas. No están entre mezcladas como yo quería. Me hacen el mismo caso que mis hijos...ninguno.... pero bueno¡¿! tampoco esta mal no ?!?:)

To finish this picture where you can see both coloured flowers together. They didn't mix up...just like my kids, my plants didn't do as I told them... but hey, It doesn't look that bad !!! :)

¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo !!! ---- Hello there !!!

En abril brotaron las iris en mi balcón este. Es una flor espectacular que acapara todas las miradas.

My iris plants bloomed in April. It is a beautiful flower that inmediately became the center of attention of my East Balcony.

En el últimpo post enseñaba esta foto del 9 de abril, en la que se ven a los tulipanes negros muy abiertos y ya en sus últimos días. Al fondo se aprecia ya la primera iris abierta.

On my last post I showed you this picture taken on the 9th April. On the right you can see the black tulips, already quite open and in their last days, when right in the back the firt Iris just opened up.

Bueno pero echemos un vistazo más de cerca. Este macetero me está dando muchas alegrías, tiene un diseño floral de lo más colorido y no para de darme sorpresas. :)

Ok well let's take a closer look. I am quite fond of this pot, it has a rather colourful design and it is continuosly coming up with surprises :)

Pues era un día soleado y me dí una vuelta por el balcón este sacando fotos a contra luz. Estas bonitas flores rosas son de una planta bulbosa llamada ciclamen. Sí, es tan suave al tacto como parece.

It was quite a sunny day and I tried some pictures against the light. These nice pink flowers belong to a bulb plant called cyclamen. Oh yes and it is as soft as it looks.

Aquí está una de las últimas leucojem, la campanilla blanca, acompañada de una planta que lo siento pero no sé como se llama. Tengo mala memoria para los nombres, pero no se me olvida una flor, ni su historia. Esta en particular ha nacido este invierno de semillitas de otra planta que está en el mismo balcón. Bueno otro día lo cuento en más detalle y me pongo el anillo de casado la otra mano para acordarme de apuntarme el nombre este fin de semana cuando vaya al vivero :)

Here we have one of my last leucojem, the white bell together with another plant whose name I can't remember. I have a terrible memory for names, but I don't forget a flower, or its story. This plant in particular has grown this winter from little seeds of another one I still have on my balcony. Well but I will tell you that story some other time, first I am going to change my wedding ring to the other hand so I remember to write down the name of the plant when I see it this weekend when I go plant shopping :)

Volviendo a las iris. Una semana después ya se habían abierto unas cuatro flores más. Aquí vemos una más a la derecha.

Back to the Iris, here we have the same pot a few days later, where you can appreciate it has company.

Te habrás dado cuenta que las flores de la izquierda también se han multiplicado. La flor roja es una anemone. La flor de arriba está ya terminando su ciclo y está muy abierta, mientras que la de abajo se ve que acaba de abrir hace poco y durará unos días más.

You probably noticed that the red flowers on the left are also multiplying themselves. These red flowers are anemone. The one on top is kind of finishing its cycle, you can see it is a lot more opened up than the lower one, which will last a few more days.

La flor de iris de la derecha está acompañada de unas pequeñísimas flores que a lo mejor solo las aprecias si agrandas la foto. Son flores del frambueso. Efectivamente, estas serán las primeras frambuesas de ciudad de la temporada :):)

The Iris on the pot of the right is accompanied here by small flowers that belong to the raspberry plant. Well you migh need to make the picture bigger to see them properly. Yes indeed those small flowers you can see will belong to my first harvest of city raspberries :) :)

Mirando hacia la derecha y hacia el resto del balcón, se aprecian las otras tres plantas de iris. Estoy especialmente contento con la primera, pues realmente pensé en que quedaría bonita con la planta de flor amarilla y nombre desconocido por mí. Esta es la planta madre, que me sobrevive desde hace un par de años ya. Las florecitas blancas de la derecha son del arándano....mmmm rico :) :)

Looking to the right you can see the rest of Iris flowers on the balcony. I am quite happy with the first one because I actually thought of that combination. The tall Iris flower over the nice yellow flowered plant whose name is a mistery for me. (that one is the mother plant by the way, it has been with me for over two years now). The little white flowers belong to the blueberry plant....mmmm rico :):)

Para terminar, estas tres fotos. Es una flor muy bonita y si te gusta te tienes que acordar de buscarla entre las bolsas de bulbos que se ponen a la venta a finales de otoño en los viveros. (Bueno a lo mejor en tu país se encuentran en otro momento del año)

To finish, here you have three close up shots. It is a real nice flower, so if you like how it decorates a balcony, don't forget to look for it at the end of autumn when they sell it as bulbs. (Well maybe in your country the timing might be a little different.)

¡¡¡ Hola de nuevo!!! --- Hello there !!!

Esperaba ilusionado la llegada de los tulipanes negros, pero la belleza es fugaz. ¡Llegaron, embellecieron, y se fueron en solo una semana!!! Casi no me da tiempo a fotografiarles. Es una flor que tiene un toque aterciopelado muy distinguido. Empiezo con una foto en cada balcón.

I was really looking forward to the arrival of my black tulips. They only stayed with me for a week, I almost didn't get a chance to take pictures. It's quite an elegant flower, with a rather distinguished shiny look. Here is a picture from each balcony.

Empiezo con el balcón este. Una vista general con los tres tulipanes negros. Me he dado cuenta de que es un bulbo algo delicado. Estoy bastante seguro de que planté más de tres. Así que si alguna vez quieres comprar, plántalos con alegría, porque no brotan con facilidad.

I will start with the East Balcony, here you have a general view with the three black tulips. Something I have noticed is that they do not grow very easily. I am quite sure I planted more than three. So if you are thinking of buying some next year, you might want to take it into account, and buy a few more than you really need, because they might not all grow into plants.

Como os decía hemos tenido una ola de calor a finales de marzo y principios de abril. El ciclo de las plantas se me ha revolucionado un poco. Este es el motivo de que los tulipanes solo han durado una semana. Cuando hace mucho calor las flores se secan antes. Fíjate que diferencia en solo una semana.

Balcón este 2 abril:

As I told you earlier, we had a heat wave at the end of March and beginning of April. The natural life cycle of my plants has sped up a bit. That is why the black tulips only lasted about a week. When it gets hot flowers dry up more quickly. Check the difference in only one week.

El 9 de abril el balcón ha perdido todo su color. Los tulipanes ya están muy abiertos y no duraron mucho después de esto. Pero no pasa nada porque tenemos más flores esperando!! De hecho al fondo puedes apreciar el primer iris, que será el motivo del siguiente post :):)

On the 9th April you can see the balcony has lost all of its colour. The black tulips are already quite open and they did not last much after this. But it's all right, I have more flowers coming up !! Right at the end you can see already the first Iris showing up, the star of my nex post :):)

Vamos ahora al balcón oeste, donde tuve me crecieron cuatro tulipanes negros. Esta una vista desde un lateral.

Mis vecinos deben alucinar conmigo a veces. De repente ven a un tipo estirar el brazo por el balcón....bueno pero que bonita foto de jardinería urbana :)

My neighbours must think I am a tad crazy. I mean like once in a while they see me sticking my arm out with a camera in my hand....hey but this urban gardening style picture is worth it :)

Aquí tienes el cuatro tulipán negro, que como ves ha crecido torcido. Es un efecto que hay que tener en cuenta y espero que esta foto te sirva para no cometer el mismo error que yo. Como el macetero está metido un poco hacia dentro, la planta crece buscando la luz que le falta. Al ser una planta alargada, pues termina cayendo sobre su propio peso.

Bueno y aquí puedes ver una bonita flor de clematis, mi planta trepadora. Está espectacular, pero bueno ya te lo cuento después del post de los iris :) Si es que la ola de calor me ha revolucionado las plantas, no doy a basto :):)

Here is the fourth black tulip. As you can see it is completely crooked. There is a reason for this and I hope this picture helps you not to do the same mistake as me. Since this pot receives less sunlight, the plant has grown outwards and fallen on its own weight. Well and right on top you can see a big purple fower, it is from the clematis, a climbing plant....but I will show you more after my next post agout my iris. :)
