As expected, the Marlins selected newly acquired outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins on Saturday assigned Ruggiano on paper to Triple-A New Orleans, but the intent all along was to immediately add him to the major league roster. With Austin Kearns on the disabled list, the Marlins needed another right-handed bat on the bench.

“He can bring a lot of things,” said manager Ozzie Guillen, who is familiar with Ruggiano from his tenure with the Rays.

Guillen added that Ruggiano would start in left field against left-handers. Chris Coghlan and Bryan Petersen, both of whom are left-handed hitters, will continue splitting time in center. Ruggiano has played center, but Guillen sees him

While Giancarlo Stanton is challenging a Marlins record for most home runs in a month, he says he's a lot prouder of the rise in his batting average than he is in the big blasts. Stanton has walloped 10 homers in May -- two shy of Dan Uggla's one-month mark of 12 (May, 2008). But he's hitting .333 in May, bringing his average up to .296 overall.

"I don't like having a low average, period," Stanton said. "I don't like a 1-for-5 with a homer. Everyone else is like 'great game' because you hit a homer. But I really don't like it. That's the kind of hitter I've been working to be and always wanted to be."

MIAMI — The Marlins on Sunday added another right-handed bat to their bench.

A day after acquiring Justin Ruggiano in a Minor League trade, the outfielder was headed to the big leagues.

Ruggiano, a right-handed hitting outfielder, was obtained on Saturday from the Astros for Minor League catcher Jobduan Morales.

The Marlins on Sunday announced they selected Ruggiano’s contract. The team also optioned outfielder Kevin Mattison to Triple-A New Orleans. To make room on the 40-man roster for Ruggiano, right-hander Jose Ceda was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

In 39 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City, Ruggiano batted .325 with five home runs and 29 RBIs.

Ruggiano, 30, has big league experience.

Once this season Ozzie Guillen removed Heath Bell from the closer role. Bell has forced him to contemplate the same course of action.

For the second time in as many nights, Bell started the ninth with a three-run lead. His results dictated Guillen remove him mid-outing. Bell gave up a leadoff single to Angel Pagan and walked two of the next three batters. Friday it was Steve Cishek who came in for the save. Saturday, Randy Choate finished it off.

Guillen after the 5-3 win was not prepared to make any determinations about how he might use Bell going forward. Here’s what he had to say:
