Rafflesia arnoldii produces the largest individual flower on earth, and a strong odor of decaying flesh - the latter point earning it the nickname of "corpse flower". It occurs only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo in the Indonesian Archipelago. Although there are some plants with larger flowering organs, those are technically clusters of many flowers.

The flower is rare and hard to locate. It takes many months to develop and the flower lasts for only a few days. The flowers are unisexual and male and female flowers need to be close by. Successful pollination is a rare event.

1. PREPARE BUCKETS like a Chrysal Professional!

Prepare solutions with COLD water. NO ICE (dilutes the mix as it melts)

Measure when mixing (correct dose gives 100% efficiency)

Gerberas, daffs, cut hyacinths: 1 Professional Gerbera pill per ½ gallon water

Hydration for dry-packs, woodies and hard to hydrate flowers:

Chrysal Professional #1: 1 pump per 1 gallon water

Chrysal Rose PRO Hydration: 1 cap per 1.25 gallons water

Display buckets, water tubes, back stock buckets:

Chrysal Professional #2 liquid: 1 pump per 1½ quarts H2O

1 Chrysal Universal Pro #2 T-bag per 1.5qt water.

1 Chrysal BULB T-bag per 2 qts water

Fill vases and soak foam:

Chrysal Professional #3 flower food: 1 pump per 1quart water

Chrysal Rose PRO Vase: 1 cap per 2 quarts water

2. TIME TO DRINK!

All dry-pack flowers need a 1-2 hr (minimum) drink before selling

3. ACTION

Make sure every stem gets a fresh cut! Sounds stupid, but the stem of gyp in the rose bouquet that doesn’t get a fresh cut, dies far faster than the roses!

4. AS IN ALL OF LIFE, TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Immediately place cut stems in solution. Tissues start to heal over in 5-10 seconds…

5. BACTERIA BOB STRIKES: Place fresh cut stems into dirty buckets? Forget it!

Cut stems bleed enzymes, carbohydrates…a virtual juice bar for bacteria

Sanitize buckets before filling. Scrub with Chrysal Cleaner and rinse well

Wipe down display and cooler shelves minimum 1 x week with cleaner solution

Spray design tables frequently throughout the day with Chrysal Cleaner solution

6. CHRYSAL CLEANER:

Choppers, counters, knives…Dip, spray, wipe surfaces daily

7. TRASH TALK:

To flowers, leaving open trash cans is equivalent to someone sneezing six inches from your face, all day long. No tissue!

Get trash out. Botrytis floats off green trash clinging to counters, tools, aprons…

8. SHARPEN UP:

Dull tools cause stringy ends–cells into solution. Bacteria go wild. Botrytis thrive!

Control Conditions:

Keep flowers dry. DRY is SUPER IMPORTANT!!

Don’t overfill buckets (prevents gushing on other bunches as flowers are pulled)

Allow time (30-60 min) for condensation to evaporate off blooms when processing

How to Fertilize a Garden Cheaply

Help your plants grow with the best, cheapest, most ecological fertilizer available. It is also good for your plants, not poisonous, the same with us!

Steps

The best fruit grows from the best soil
Till the garden spot with mechanical tiller or by hand. Loosening the soil will allow for the easy addition of compost and aerate the soil for the growth of roots and earthworms.
Add about 25 lbs of rabbit droppings (NOT RABBIT FOOD) for an area of 1,000 sq. ft. Make sure the rabbit droppings are NOT fresh, but well dried or composted.
If you live near a race track/ fair grounds/ riding stable you can get free horse manure if you are willing to haul it away. This could be done by pickup truck or even using buckets or trash bags in the trunk of your family car.
If you burn wood for heat during the winter; put the ashes in the garden area for the potassium contained in the ashes. Spread over the garden area after they are cold and not on a windy day. Do not spread too thickly or they become like a gunky paste. You could also add some ash to your compost pile. Be sure to do it in THIN layers.
Grass clippings from your lawnmower can be easily composted. Choose a location that is out of the wind, so the clippings won't be blown away or scattered. If you have a bagging mower, empty the clippings onto the mound every time you mow. Layer the fresh clippings with dry leaves, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds and any uncooked vegetable scraps from your kitchen. Turn this compost pile weekly to allow air to penetrate.
Often times neighbors will be willing to help add to your compost. It can save them from having to haul good/green clippings to the dump and you can repay them with a basket of tomatoes.
What you end up with is basically compost, which will add available nitrogen to your soil. Compost will aid in making your plants grow strong, support earthworms and loosen the soil.

Tips

Caution for using ashes: If you live in the southern USA, check soil PH before adding ashes. Ashes are high in alkalinity, and if your soil is not acid, you will not be doing your soil any favors by adding a lot of ashes. Keep in mind that most Garden how-to's are written for the vast central and northern regions where the soil is highly acidic and conditions are different from extreme southern regions.
The Potassium in the ash is good for flowering plants and fruits but not so good for grass and green foliage that need nitrogen to help make the foliage green.
