If you drive a car you will know what a no-claims discount (NCD) is, but what you may not know is whether you can get the equivalent for your home and whether they work in the same way.

Here we detail what a NCD is for your property and how they work.

Does home insurance offer a no-claims discount?

The good news is you can earn a no-claims discount (NCD) on your home insurance the same way you build up your car insurance. If you do not make a claim during the policy term, it saves your insurer money. Earning an NCD is an incentive to not claim for small incidents.

However, making a claim on your home insurance will affect your NCD, just like your motor vehicle policy.

How can I get a no-claims discount on my home insurance?

When you apply for a new quote, you’ll usually be asked how many years of NCD you’ve built up. If you’re not asked, make sure you raise it with one of our specialists.

Your NCD will then be used to calculate the new premium quote, and in some cases, an insurer might want to see proof of your claim-free years. You can get this from your existing insurer if you do not have anything in writing, or are unsure if you have built up any years.

Is a no-claims discount for my home the same as for my car?

If you go without making a claim on your home insurance for a year, you can get a discount on the cost of your insurance at the renewal stage. This discount will grow for each year that you remain claim-free, up to a maximum discount.

The one key difference in the way an NCD on car and home insurance works is that with your car insurance, your NCD is only affected by claims that are your fault, or if the cost of repair can’t be claimed from another party. Non-fault claims do not affect your NCD.

However, with home insurance, both fault and non-fault claims are treated the same. So even if your claim is not your fault due to something like a burglary or if you make a claim over an accident, like smashing your TV or spilling wine on your sofa, they will be treated in the same way regarding your NCD.

What happens to my no-claims discount if I make a claim?

It depends on the insurer and over how many years you’ve built up your NCD. You could lose your NCD altogether, or see it reduced if you make a claim.

Because of this, you may decide you’re better off not making a claim for a small amount and paying for the repair or replacement yourself, such as in the examples previously mentioned.

You will also want to factor in how much excess you’ll need to pay when making a claim -if it’s more than it would cost you to pay out of your own pocket, it’s not worth it.

For bigger claims, such as a flood or fire which can cost thousands of pounds worth of damage, or if you’re burgled and have lost lots of valuable items, it would make financial sense to make a claim, even though you’ll lose your NCD or see it reduced.

How can I reduce the chances of having to make a claim on my house insurance?

Sandbags Outside Front Door Of Flooded House

There’s plenty you can do to minimise the chances of having to make a claim on your home insurance – and avoid disruption while repairs are being made.

Here are a few ways you can do that:.

Take good care of your home

While your home insurance will not cover you for wear and tear on your property or its contents, it’s still important to keep on top of general home maintenance. Small problems can become bigger issues if they are left ignored.

Protect your home from weather damage. Check for things like loose roof tiles, broken gutters and leaky windows after bad weather. If you have trees near or overhanging your property try to keep the branches maintained.

Ensure your boiler has an annual check. Whilst you may feel there’s nothing wrong with your boiler, plumbers can detect early signs of leaks and drips and make sure the pipes are well-insulated to save you money in the long run.

Improve your home’s security

Installing a home security system will help to deter burglars from visiting your home if they can see that one is installed. Burglar alarms, security lighting, approved locks on external doors and windows and a doorbell with a camera will not only show your home is well guarded but can also reduce the price of your home insurance.

If you are going to be away from your home it’s also a good idea to use timers to turn your lights on in your property to give the effect that someone is at home.

Protect against house fires

Fitting a fire alarm on each floor of your property can reduce your home insurance, but it will also ensure you and the people you live with will be notified if there is a fire even when you are asleep. It is a good idea to have a carbon monoxide alarm installed too.

Keep matches, lighters and candles away from electrical items and from children, even when stored.

Be careful with DIY jobs

Be careful with the DIY jobs that you do in your home, and who you pay to carry out work in your property. Ensure the workmen you hire have the correct qualifications needed, along with all the paperwork.

It’s also worth noting that any work carried out may require you to have home renovation insurance

If you do not have accidental damage included on your buildings insurance, you’re unlikely to be covered for any DIY mishaps either.

Does my no-claims discount cover both my contents and buildings insurance policies?

It varies between insurers, but you might get the chance to build up an NCD on both your buildings and contents policies.

Does it matter if I’ve not had home insurance for a while?

Insurers will be looking at how many years of no-claims you’ve had when calculating the price of your home insurance. If you have had a gap in your cover, whether that’s due to renting in between moving properties or any other reason, you may not be able to receive the full discount from your no-claims discount, depending on the time, usually around three months, in between your home cover.

Home insurance you can trust

If you’re looking for home insurance, there’s the specialist home insurance providers at Adrian Flux. We can protect you financially against incidents that take place while the building work is underway, including fire, theft, injury and accidental damage. We can also cover your property if it remains unoccupied during renovations.

Comedian Russell Kane appears on the last episode of series nine of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Kane, who has been a regular on our TV screens and the stage for over two decades, has forged a successful comedy career but he’s also kept his passion for cars fairly hidden until he appeared on the podcast and revealed his love of all things four-wheeled.

The 49-year-old, who is best known for his stand-up routines, has also presented reality television spin-offs such as I’m a Celebrity get me out of Here – Now for ITV2 and Channel 4’s Big Brother’s Big Mouth.

Russell Kane on the modern classics he’s bought

During his chat with the boys, Kane divulged his affection for modern classics from the eighties and the vehicles he’s purchased and would love to own.

“I love eighties (cars) and they’re called modern classics, I’d love a Cosworth, I’d love an XR3i in mint condition, I’d love a Capri, if the steering wasn’t so bad I probably would’ve got one of those,” Kane declared.

“But the BMW 5 Series, rather than an antique 3 Series, they just put those little executive touches on in the eighties. It’s 1986, but I’ve got electric windows, it’s got retrofitted air con. It took me six months to sort the parts with a mechanic that worked on it, it cost thousands.

“I had more money than sense as I’d just had a payout and it sits there (on his property) and I probably do about a thousand miles a year, maybe less, but I love it.”

Plenty more episodes of Fuelling Around to enjoy

Learning to drive is an exciting (and sometimes nerve-wracking) process, and one of the first steps is to get yourself a provisional driving licence – but how do you do that?

In this blog, we’ll take a look at how you go about getting your own provisional driving licence, what it allows you to do, and why it’s important to have one.

What is a provisional licence?

A provisional licence is a temporary licence that you need in order to learn how to drive and take your driving test. Like a regular driving licence, you can use it as a form of identification, but, it isn’t a full licence. You will need one to start your driving journey and to get insurance.

A provisional licence means you can learn how to drive in a car with ‘L’ plates as long as you’re accompanied by a licenced driver (be that a driving instructor or parent) who can supervise you. This licenced driver will have to be over 21 years old and have had a UK driving licence for more than three years.

It also means you can learn how to ride a moped or light quad bike at 16 years old.

Young Woman Having Driving Lesson With Female Instructor

When can I get a provisional license?

The legal driving age (for a car) in the UK is 17 years old but you can actually apply for your provisional licence when you are 15 years and nine months old through the DVLA. It then becomes valid when you are 16 years old.

In order to apply for a provisional driving licence in the UK, you’ll need to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away and have legally lived in the UK for at least 185 days.

What do I need to get a provisional licence?

When you apply for your provisional licence, you will be asked for proof of identification (like a passport) so, make sure you have that to hand. You will also need every address you’ve had in the last three years.

If you apply online, it will cost you £34 so you will need a valid credit or debit card to pay that during the application process.

If you want to apply by post, you will need to grab a D1 application form from a Post Office. Getting your licence this way will cost £43, which you can pay for by sending a cheque or postal order with your application.

How long does your provisional licence take to come?

This will depend on how you apply for your provisional driving licence. If you applied online, it should only take a week for it to arrive in the post. If you send your application by post, it may take up to three weeks.

If, after three weeks, you haven’t received your provisional licence yet, contact the DVLA to check on its delivery status.

Motorsport commentator Ben Edwards appears on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss all things Formula 1.

Edwards got his break in motorsport as a mechanic for Formula Ford in 1982 before becoming a racing driver, and eventually a commentator alongside Tiff Needell at the BBC.

The 58-year-old, who is best known for his work for F1TV’s coverage, sat down with Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to give his views on a host of matters involving F1 and his love of cars.

Ben Edwards ponders whether Ferrari were right to sign Lewis Hamilton

During his chat with the boys, Edwards discussed Lewis Hamilton’s excellent performance at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, but questions whether Ferrari have made the right decision to sign him, rather than going for a younger driver.

“It was a shame he didn’t get a final podium for Mercedes in his last run, but it was still so impressive in getting past George (Russell) like that, it was fantastic and a great way to end it,” Edwards declared.

“He’s been through a bit of a tough patch hasn’t he, in this last part of the year, it has been a tough patch. He’s not been happy with the feel of the car, you just feel he’s not had that confidence in himself, but suddenly there he was back to his normal self.

“I was commentating earlier this year at the British Grand Prix when he won, and that really was special because in the wet, he is astonishing and he still is, and that was part of him winning at Silverstone.

“The question will be how he gets on with (Charles) Leclerc and how the combination goes at Ferrari. That is going to be something that everybody’s going to be interested in for the start of next year.

“Ferrari fans love seeing new youngsters coming through and being dominant if they can. I do think, and there is plenty of support for Lewis, but I do think there is a bit of a mix (among the fans), and some people are feeling ‘well Lewis has been at the top for a long, long time, surely now he’s getting towards the end of his career, why do we need him in Ferrari now? Is he going to be the right guy?’

“Commercially I think it’s been a very good thing for Ferrari to do that, but from a fan point of view I think there will be a few questions. So that will put him under a little bit of pressure.”

BBC presenter Mike Bushell appears on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss what it’s like working in sport, his love of rallying and whether electric cars are the future.

Bushell has been working as a broadcaster since 1990 when he joined BBC Radio Solent and is now one of the faces millions of people watch on BBC Breakfast whilst they get ready for work.

The 58-year-old sat down with Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to talk all things four-wheeled.

Mike Bushell on his love of rallying

During his chat with the boys, Bushell detailed his love of rallying and how he has been fortunate enough to be involved in the same rally as Richard Burns in Kenya.

“I was lucky enough to follow the great Richard Burns out on the safari rally in Kenya, which was amazing going through the bush, through the jungle and all these people rushing out trying to spot the cars and the animals sweeping across the road,” Bushell revealed.

“They have helicopters trying to sweep baboons and giraffes out of the way, and I just fell in love with it and being the co-driver, even though every time I’ve ever done it and tried to be the co-driver on stages, I’ve ended up throwing up after a couple.

“But once you’ve thrown up cause you’re reading the pace notes and your head’s bopping up and down and I can hardly see over the top. So once I’ve done a business in a paper bag then it goes, and you’re fine after that.

“I think the unpredictability and the teamwork needed in rallying and the fact of where in the world you are, I actually love it.”

Television presenter and BBC’s Formula 1 pit lane reporter Jennie Gow appears on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss this season’s Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, her career and what it’s like working in the sport.

Gow has been working as a broadcaster since 2001 when she joined BBC Solent, and has since gone on to work for some of the country’s biggest channels such as Sky Sports, Channel 4 and BBC Radio 5 Live.
The Formula 1 personality sat down with Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss life in the paddocks and her thoughts on this season’s title race.

During her chat with the boys, Gow detailed her role with 5 Live and how the BBC would like her to report on what is going on in the pit lane across each race weekend, and how Netflix’s Drive to Survive has changed the feeling behind the scenes.

“With 5 Live and the BBC, they don’t want something too specific or technical (to report on),” Gow revealed.

“They want it to be able to be digested by everyone. So I go in with that role of being the middle-man, of lifting the curtain on what I can see, and showing the listener what they would be able to hear and see if they were in my boots.

“Not everyone can go in that pit lane, I’m very lucky to do that, and as I say, it’s a real privilege.

“I think the environment in the paddock has changed since the effect of Drive to Survive has filtered through, and Liberty Media really getting a grip of the ownership, and what they want to do and achieve with it.

“But I think if you go back in time, when I first started, I didn’t feel like I should be there, and certainly not in a pit lane!”

Former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley appears on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss this season’s Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, his career and what it’s like working in the sport.

Priestley started working for McLaren in 1999 at the Australian Grand Prix but left at the end of the 2009 season to focus on his media career.

The Formula 1 personality sat down with Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss what he’s been up to in recent years, his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari and his time in the paddock.

Marc Priestley on Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari in 2025

During a wide-ranging chat, Priestley explained why he thinks Hamilton has struggled in the Mercedes car this year and why Ferrari have signed him instead of renewing Carlos Sainz’s deal.

“I think he (Carlos Sainz) has had the best year of his life,” Priestley revealed.

“It’s hard though because through no fault of his own, he’s not been dropped because of his performances, he got dropped purely because they (Ferrari) had an opportunity to sign a seven-time world champion and you get that and understand it.

“I think fans will look at the decision at Ferrari and they’ll say ‘Look at Lewis’ performances right now, and then look at Carlos’ performance right now, they’ve made a terrible mistake at Ferrari and they should’ve stuck with Carlos.’

“And to some extent, in terms of the longer performance of Ferrari, Carlos has got a bit more longevity in him than Lewis has. I think we can all agree on that.

“But Lewis’ performance this year in the Mercedes has clearly disappeared, and it’s clearly disappeared even in comparison to his own team-mate (George Russell) particularly in qualifying. He just cannot match him.

“I’ve always had this theory about Formula 1 drivers and I can probably apply it to Daniel Ricciardo in recent times, maybe even Sergio Perez in the Red Bull which we know is a good car – they’re so specific modern Formula 1 cars in terms of how they need to be driven.

“Particularly this new generation of cars, is it just a case that a certain type of car’s characteristic doesn’t suit a particular driver’s driving style, and some of them find it hard to adapt to that.

“It’s not like Lewis has lost talent, just is it this particular car doesn’t suit the way that he drives?”

England cricket legend Darren Gough joins hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss his career, his time on Strictly Come Dancing and the car he wished he owned.

Gough is one of the most memorable cricketers from the 2000s, playing with other legends such as Freddie Flintoff, Kevin Pieterson and Michael Vaughan.

The 54-year-old, who represented his beloved Yorkshire, sat down with Plato and Vitty in a revealing interview about what he’s been up to in recent years, and why he’s jealous of the FBI.

Darren Gough on why Range Rovers are king

During a wide-ranging chat, Gough explained why he had always owned a Range Rover since he first played for England and his fascination with big cars.

“I worked on the motorways for eight months when I was younger” Gough revealed.

“The reason I worked on the motorways is because I wanted to buy a brand new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, this would’ve been 1990, it was fantastic. Honestly it had a beautiful shape, it was gold, that browny gold colour, and I got the fancy writing down the sides I got ‘Cabriolet’ written in fancy writing.

“Just being able to afford that back then with cricket, I was a young pro then at 20, I was probably only earning £6,500 as we only used to work for six months before cricket started to take off.

“So I got a job in the winter, earning more from working on the motorways. I bought the car because of that job, otherwise I would never have been able to afford that car, the best investment I ever made. I loved that car. I wished I’d have kept it.

“It’s the one car I wished I’d kept. Some of the nice cars I’ve had, that’s the one I wished I’d have kept.

“Since I became an England player, I’ve never not had a Range Rover. Once I got my first one, when I was 24, there’s not been any time in my life where I’ve not had a Range Rover.

“For me, I am just one of those people who just likes big cars. I look at a Ferrari, and as much as I love it, I can’t justify to myself for me to buy a Ferrari. I couldn’t do it. There’s times I’ve been tempted, same with Porsche.

“The only one I think I’d go and get is an Aston Martin, that’s the one I really do like because as quality as it is, I don’t think it has a show-off factor about it.

“I’ve always liked big cars, you know like the American ones the FBI drives around in, the Escalade. That’s the one car I’ve always wanted. I could see myself in one of them. I was so tempted at times in my career to get rid of the Range Rover for an Escalade.

“I saw Rio Ferdinand in one once in Manchester. We were playing a test match, and he pulled up outside one of his restaurants and I thought I want one of them!”

Evo magazine founder and popular YouTuber Harry Metcalfe has joined hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the ninth series of award-winning podcast, Fuelling Around, to discuss his love of cars and his YouTube channel, Harry’s Garage.

Harry’s Garage has accumulated millions of views, with Metcalfe winning Automotive Influencer of the Year in 2020 for his knowledgeable reviews of cars like the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa.

The 65-year-old sat down with Plato and Vitty, chatting about everything from his favourite cars in his collection to how he juggles his career with running a farm.

Harry Metcalfe is embracing his online success

During the podcast, Harry, who’s been in the magazine and motoring industry for decades, bantered with the hosts about what the catalyst was for starting his YouTube channel.

“My meanness really,” he joked.

“(It was) when I was running a magazine and this annoying thing called video came along and we did print magazines and websites and stuff, and I just thought, video, we ought to do video, we’ve got to do video.

“I thought, well, if – I get invited to do amazing things – if I just stick a camera on the windscreen and yammer on a bit, it’s cost nothing.

“I do it weekly; sometimes I think I’ll back off and then I get something (and) I think, ‘I can’t wait to tell someone about this thing, yeah I can’t wait.’ So I ended up doing it weekly.

“There was an MD (Managing Director) of JLR, I was at the motor show in the US, and he had to go on (stage) live right across America to display, there’s a Range Rover Sport he was about to launch the sort of concept for that and I said ‘how are the nerves?’, he said, ‘no nerves, just can’t wait to tell the world about this car’.

“He stormed on and I thought, it was just a lesson that – if you’re passionate and can’t wait to tell your viewers about these cars – there’s no nerves, no nothing, you’re just, you’re there for the moment.

“You try to explain to people how you present: ‘I didn’t know I could present, I don’t think I can but I can’t wait to tell you about this thing.’

“It’s (magazines) a bit of a clunky way of being global, sort of getting the story out there in time, and YouTube, I just now look (at it as if it’s) just magic.”

Plenty more episodes of Fuelling Around to enjoy

When it comes to riding in style, there aren’t too many who do it better than the royal family, with many of us looking to what they sit in the back of at every event they go to.

While brands such as Daimler and Rolls Royce are synonymous with the royal family, Netflix’s dramatised retelling of the British monarchy displays a host of cars both driven and ridden in by the likes of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. The replicas used are incredibly well-made, with many now selling for eye-watering prices.

For royalists and classic car fans alike, below are some of the best cars driven on The Crown season by season:

Series 1

1952 Land-Rover 80” Series I

Land Rover is a brand that has remained popular with the royal family for decades, which is why they pop up in The Crown throughout the series. Queen Elizabeth II was seen driving a Land Rover at Sandringham up until her death in 2022.

Designed by Maurice Wilks and launched in 1948, the Land Rover Series 1, which has an 80-inch wheelbase and a ladder-frame chassis, was influenced by the American World War Two Willys Jeeps.

Rolls-Royce Phantom III

The Rolls Royce brand symbolises wealth and esteem, so it’s no wonder Netflix included it in The Crown. However, royalists pointed out in series one that Queen Elizabeth never owned the Phantom III. Instead, she owned a 1950 Phantom IV.

Still, this four-wheeled beauty is eloquently crafted and pertains plenty of power under the bonnet.

1955 Sunbeam MkIII

The Sunbeam MkIII used in the series one finale, is typically seen as an old-fashioned English car, but beneath the classic English exterior lies a powerful engine not typically associated with the monarchy.

Also known as the Sunbeam-Talbot 90, it was produced from 1948-1954 and was renamed the Sunbeam MkIII from 1954-1957.

Series 2

1954 Daimler Conquest Century MkI

The Daimler Conquest was produced from 1953-1958, but it’s the MKI that is featured in the show. Daimler is often a brand that is linked with the Royal Family, with many members of the monarchy having been pictured in the backseat. The Queen Mother especially had a soft spot for them.

But it’s the 1954 Daimler Conquest that was chosen to star in the second series’s first episode outside 10 Downing Street.

1957 Morris Minor 1000

Perhaps the most iconic motor vehicle of the 1950s, the Morris Minor was Britain’s first car to sell more than one million models. Production began in 1948, but the 1000 series didn’t arrive until 1956.

The Morris Minor 1000 was a true “people’s car” and in a somewhat surprising turn of events can be seen in the first episode of the second series.

1954 Austin A40 Somerset

The third generation of the Austin A40 got some much-loved attention during series two during an exciting car chase in episode five.

This stunning vehicle was produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1952-1954 before eventually being replaced by the A40 Devon. The Somerset’s engine, however, was upgraded from the Devon, going from 40hp to 42hp.

1955 Jaguar XK 140 DHC

Jaguar is another brand that oozes class, and none more so than the Jaguar XK 140 DHC, so it’s not surprising The Crown producers chose this model to feature in the hit Netflix show.

The model featured was actually a fully restored original, instead of a replica, and can be seen when Queen Elizabeth visits the Browns Lane Jaguar factory.

1960 Wolseley 15/60

This saloon was designed by Farina and has a mounted engine which transmits its power through the rear wheels. The engine transfers power through to the wheels from a four-speed manual transmission.

An iconic piece of machinery, the Wolseley 15/60 was heavily featured in series two and cuts an heir of elegance transporting the British monarchy around.

Series 3

As mentioned above, Land Rovers are a staple when it comes to the royals. The Series 3 Station Wagon was produced during the 70s and into the mid-80s. It came in a 10-seater and 12-seater version and was known for its luxurious interior.

If you watched series 3 of The Crown, you may have noticed it in some of the infamous Balmoral scenes.

Series 4

Aston Martin DB6 Volante

Within the fourth series, King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, is seen driving his Volante sportscar around the countryside. This isn’t shocking as the King is a huge classic car fan and bought a similar model in 1971.

This specific Aston Martin was manufactured between 1965 and 1971, with ‘Volante’ deriving from the Italian word for ‘flying’. Those who have had the privilege of driving such an iconic motor would probably agree that the name is more than appropriate.

Jaguar XJ-SC Cabriolet

Many remember Princess Diana’s Austin Mini Metro but this doesn’t actually feature in The Crown. What does feature is an impressively accurate replica of her Jaguar Convertible.

The vintage sportscar was adapted so it could be used by Diana to transport the princes, William and Harry, in the back. The Crown’s intricately designed replica also included North American–style twin headlights, which Diana’s real version also had.

Series 5 & 6

1994 Audi 80 Cabriolet

Princess Diana had an eye for Cabriolets and this is showcased in series five. This time it’s an Audi she used to avoid being seen by the paparazzi.

With normal and sport modes plus a wood-lined console, we can see why the people’s princess loved classy cars like this.

1995 Bentley Brooklands

This four-door saloon car was produced between 1992 and 1998. It has an elegant look, perfect for the royals with dual headlights and a waterfall grille. Its successor, the Brooklands Coupé, came out in 2007.

Charles and Diana can be seen driving it in both series five and six of the critically-acclaimed drama which appears true to life as Bentleys were a favourite of the King and late princess.
