A superb surface fly or popper fly to strip along the surface of the water to get big strikes from bass or pike. Give this popper fly a strip so it dips into the water, then let it rest. Strip it again. Fish love these flies. Everything from the rubber leg movement to the sound attracts fish. A great fly for fly fishing ponds and lakes for warm water species.
The Quill Gordon is one of the earliest eastern mayfly hatches in the spring. The flies hatch on the bottom and rise as fully formed adults, working on the surface to dry their wings and fly. The Quill Gordon dry fly has not changed since originated by Theodore Gordon in the Catskills. Skittering the dry fly a bit can improve production as the mayfly often makes multiple attempts to fly before it finally breaks free. The Gordon dry fly is a true classic.

Artwork on a Saturday.

Crazy Charlie

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, INC. (PHWFF) was founded in 2005 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), with the help of local Trout Unlimited (TU) and Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) volunteers. Our mission: Assist in the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty military personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings.
PHWFF provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, and fly tying instruction for wounded personnel, ranging from beginners to those with prior fly fishing experience, who are adapting their skills to their new abilities. While initially focused on military personnel in the Washington, DC area, PHWFF has expanded and is offering its services to active military personnel and veterans in military and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals across the nation. Currently, over 70 such programs have been established in the U.S. and Canada.
Since its inception, PHWFF has been helping disabled active duty personnel and veterans to overcome the obstacles associated with their military service-related disabilities. The relearning of the fine motor skills required in fly fishing and fly tying has proven to be particularly effective in the overall rehabilitation of the disabled.
While PHWFF emphasizes the skills of fly fishing and fly tying to help the patients regain the use of their damaged bodies, perhaps the greatest benefit is in their realization that a more normal life is possible. Fly fishing can be a lifelong re-creation, both physically and emotionally.

PHWFF partners directly with fly fishing oriented organizations such as the FFF and TU. Within local clubs and chapters, volunteers, working with hospital staff, donate their time to teach the various skills involved in the sport of fly fishing to Project participants. PHWFF, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity incorporated in the State of Maryland, is dependent on tax-deductible financial donations and the help of numerous volunteers to meet the educational, training, equipment, transportation, and related outing needs of the participants. PHWFF strives to effectively serve its deserving participants, who have made great sacrifices in the service of our Nation.
All Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing activities are dependent on tax deductible financial donations under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. The organization is incorporated in the state of Maryland.
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. strives to effectively serve the deserving past and present members of our armed forces who have made great sacrifices in the service of our Nation.

Need New Waders ? It can be done in both salt water and fresh water.

1- False Casting Technique

This technique involves moving the rod back and forth without really casting. It enables the fly fisher to help position the cast, to dry wet flies, to lengthen the line and control the cast. The weight of the line casts the fly where you want it to go. There weight on the end of the fishing line is very small.

2- Making the Fly Move

When the cast is released, the fly lands on the water much like the natural landing of an insect. Once the fly has landed it slips under the water. When the fly is underwater, try wrapping the fishing line around two fingers to make the fly appear to be moving.

3- Playing with the Fish

Playing with the fish is an option if you get a nibble on your line. Move the fly up and down or back and forth making the fly look like it is moving naturally and fooling the fish to eat it.

4- Practice Casting

Both beginner and seasoned fly fishers can develop their techniques through practice. Practice casting in an open field is a good place for beginning fly fishers. Be sure to be far enough away from any trees or objects, to prevent getting the caught.

Read more: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/4-successful-fly-fishing-techniques#ixzz119JSOiLj

Fly Fishing, Fly Fishing Gear, Fly Fishing Trips, Fly Fishing Techniques and News - MidCurrent

Fly Fishing, Fly Fishing Gear, Fly Fishing Trips, Fly Fishing Techniques and News - MidCurrent

3M to Acquire Ross Reels, Will they remain a made in the USA brand ?

I felt the need lately to write, about everything. The political scandals, Financial Turmoil this Country faces, even world peace. But I think a whole society as a whole needs to take a step back and just "chill". One of the best ways I know how to is to do my favorite activity of all time, "Fly Fish". My wife says I am to obsessed with it. I think it is my way of dealing with the everyday stresses of life. Family, Money etc. I know when I walk down to the lake in our neighborhood and make a cast to an area I suspect "fish" are, I feel a sense of wonderment and excitement. Kinda of like a little kid waiting to see what he got for Christmas. But when a big ol' Largemouth barrels out of the water like a linebacker going for my Fly, It's like getting that Christmas present that you always wanted. May sound silly to some,

But those who Fish know....

So this blog will be for Fly Fishing and Outdoor sports in general. Please post gear reviews, what flies your fishing with, new holes to fish, stream reports and I will too. Or if you have something on your mind that even slightly pertains to this, feel free to comment. As far as explanation for the name, When you fish you are free. Free from everything, Well one of the most common mistaken historical facts is that the Pirate flag meant Raping, Killing and Theft. But the Pirate Ideal was "Freedom"

Which is what we shall all hope and Fight for.

Enough philosophical talk, Lets share ideas, Flies, Gear Reviews, New lakes and Rivers, and also ask questions !
