I am very excited to introduce to you my friend, Donna Broers - and I have waited for over a year for this! Although Donna and I met through Facebook, she is one of those special people in my life who I am so blessed to call a true friend. I look forward to the day we can see each other in person so I can give her a big HUG! And, then go fish!

From my Father, who was an avid fisherman all my life. I mentioned to him that I’d like to try fly fishing because it looked like a new challenge! Something drew me to it. Watching the guys fly fishing in the local rivers!

My dad tied his own white fish flies and fished the rivers in the winter. He bought me my first fly rod for Christmas in 2008, unfortunately he passed away that September and wasn’t able to give it to me! So when Christmas came around my mom gave it to me and said your father had bought this for you for your Christmas present. And then I found his antique vice and his fly tying materials, and that’s the beginning of what has become my fly fishing and fly tying addiction! ;-)

Being outdoors and being one with nature! The solitude. Or having a great time with friends on an outing.

The river never sings the same story twice. Being on the water, that’s where I feel my Dads spirit the most. He was fishing the Washougal River near Vancouver WA when he had his fishing accident that claimed his life in September of 2008. He left a living legacy! He taught me how to be one with nature. To respect and conserve what God created for us.I will forever remember all his teachings and all the good times we had when he took my mom, brother & I fishing on the Klickitat River since I was a child.

I hope that through my involvement in my club that I can pass on some of that legacy to others! I am now volunteering as an instructor in our local fly tying class – like those that mentored me when I started 6 1/2 years ago. It has come full circle. I am now currently a board member and vice president of Yakima Fly Fishers Association.

Do you tie flies and if so, what do you enjoy about it?

Yes I do! I actually learned to tie flies before I learned to fly fish. Thanks to a good friend and mentor, I was invited to a fly tying clinic that he was instructing at one of the local churches! And the volunteers helping us were members of the Yakima Fly Fishers Association! Through that class I met several close friends that I’ve been fishing with now for the past 6 1/2 years.

Have you ever encountered issues, bias, or uncomfortable situations in Fly Fishing?

No, I haven’t thankfully! I have actually made a lot of great friends out fishing.

Which trip should we sign you up for….10 days Fly Fishing from tropical beaches or 10 days in the Alaska wilderness?

Alaska, it’s already on my top 10 bucket list of places to fly fish!

What’s your favorite fish to pursue and fly to use?

I would say it would be the trout, although I have a new rod for steelhead fishing. And as far as flies it would be the woolly bugger! Because of its versatility in the rivers and lakes in my area!

Your birthday is coming, and you can have anything your heart desires. What should we wrap up for you?

A weekend of fly fishing the rivers with you ladies in your neck of the woods.

Name one thing you’d never go Fly Fishing without…

My cheater readers, seems as the older I get the worse my eyesight is for tying on flies.

Whether you’ve been Fly Fishing for 2 months or 20 years, what advice would you give to someone who just started out in Fly Fishing?

Get hooked up with your local Club or fly shop if you don’t have anyone to help teach you! They will steer you in the right direction. And then once you get hooked, you will be like the rest of us, addicted to fly fishing. Lol.

Sometimes you meet some of the most amazing people in places you never would imagine. I “met” Jennifer Gisler on Instagram under @flyfishinggal. Love horror, adventure, skateboards, pinball. www.jennifergisler.com ”

I was looking into updating my MKFlies website, and Jen graciously offered to do it for me. ”I just want to help out another fly fishing woman,” said Jen. I now have an awesome website, and best of all, a new friend. Jen will forever be showered with my flies.

Do you have a blog/website? www.jennifergisler.com

How long have you been fly fishing? About 6 years

Where are your home waters? Minnesota

How did you get your start in Fly Fishing? I have always loved watching people (mainly my husband) flyfish. It is just…. beautiful! So one day I decided to go out and try, and I actually caught a fish! Thus started my addiction.

What do you enjoy the most when you are out Fly Fishing? Everything. I love the rush of the fight, the fresh air, the nature, the sounds and mostly being far away from civilization.

Do you tie flies and if so, what do you enjoy about it? I do not tie flies yet…. but I would have to say that my favorite fly would be whatever is flying, floating or emerging at the moment.Have you ever encountered issues, bias, or uncomfortable situations Fly Fishing? No bias, in fact men have been super cool and excited about women fly fishing. I have had a few encounters with some males (not fishermen) while out though which has had me a bit concerned for safety reasons.

Which trip should we sign you up for….10 days Fly Fishing from tropical beaches or 10 days in the Alaska wilderness? Alaska baby!

What’s your favorite fish to pursue and fly to use? The elusive brown trout! Honestly no favorite fly, I have used what is emerging, flying around and some crazy flies that I would think would never work and resemble nothing… but they have worked. Why? No clue.

Your birthday is coming, and you can have anything your heart desires. What should we wrap up for you? Early retirement so I can spend time checking out all of the uncharted waters around the country and globe. Or, a good pair of the best slip resistant boots I can find.

Name one thing you’d never go Fly Fishing without… Toilet paper! I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. And of course my rod and bag.

I follow Megan on Instagram – that’s where I was drawn to her beautiful photography. I soon discovered that this beautiful fly fisherwoman can paint and sketch, too!

Do you have a blog/website? At the moment the most regular social media I use is Instagram. Feel free to check out my adventures on there. (Username: mposein)

How long have you been fly fishing? This is my third year fly fishing, but I’ve been fishing since I was a teenager. It is my absolute favorite hobby. When I’m not fishing, I’m thinking about fishing or reading about it!

Where are your homewaters? I’m up in Alberta, Canada… Eh!

How did you get your start in Fly Fishing? My passion for the outdoors got me a job working at an outdoor gear store a number of years ago. Fly fishing always seemed daunting to me… So many things to know and a tough technique to master. My work friends (some of which have awesome nicknames like Sensei and Yoda because of their infinite fly fishing knowledge) showed me the ropes. Then, after catching my first trout on the fly, I myself was hooked.

What do you enjoy the most when you are out Fly Fishing? Just being out on the water surrounded by wilderness. There is nothing more amazing than a lake steaming in the morning sun, or watching deer cross a river just meters away from you. I love it all.

Do you tie flies and if so, what do you enjoy about it? I only recently started tying my own flies. It was awesome to test them out this summer. When you get a hit on them you’re like “Heck yeah! That’s what I’m talking about!” It’s incredibly validating and endlessly satisfying knowing that you made something with enough finesse to fool a trout.

Have you ever encountered issues, bias, or uncomfortable situations Fly Fishing? Usually not. Most men are pretty welcoming to the idea of female anglers in my opinion. There have been a couple of occasions where I’ll be fishing next to a gentleman who is a bit condescending towards me, but it just makes me feel like a million bucks when I manage to out-fish him.

Which trip should we sign you up for….10 days Fly Fishing from tropical beaches or 10 days in the Alaska wilderness? Alaska when the salmon are running would be so much fun. I wouldn’t just fish though, I’d be hiking and taking a million photos, too!

Your birthday is coming, and you can have anything your heart desires. What should we wrap up for you? I need some new waders… I’ve had my eye on Patagonias Spring River Waders for a while now.

Name one thing you’d never go Fly Fishing without… Bear Spray. It’s really easy to forget about your surroundings when you’re focused on a fish. You are typically not making much noise either. Best thing to do is to pack it out to the river just in case.

Whether you’ve been fly fishing for 2 months or 20 years, what advice would you give to someone who just started out in Fly Fishing? People ask me this all the time. The best advice I can give is to just have oodles of patience. It’s going to take a while to develop your cast, learn the lingo and deal with wind knots, flies stuck in trees, snapped tippet etc. I promise you this though, if you keep at it you won’t regret it. The tug is indeed the drug and it will keep you coming back for more.

A few months ago, I discovered a pretty cool company called, “Rep Your Water“ - a fly fishing gear company that lets you rep your home or home away from home waters. Of course, I picked up an Idaho hat for myself – which has brought me pretty good luck on the river….at least I believe it! I noticed “Rep you Water” started a women’s line and I sent them a quick message on facebook letting them know how thrilled I was with that. I was even more thrilled when it was Corinne who replied back! Corinne and her husband are the great folks behind this company.

Fly Fishing Company? My husband and I started our fly fishing lifestyle apparel company RepYourWater together in 2011. Our website is www.repyourwater.com and we have social media pages dedicated to the company and the love of fishing all found RepYourWater.

How long have you been fly fishing? I started fly fishing about 7 years ago just in the front range and mountains of Colorado.

Where are your home waters? I would consider anywhere in Colorado my home waters. The water I probably fish the most is small-stream, high altitude water on the front range.

How did you get your start in Fly Fishing? I grew up in a very outdoorsy family. We camped, hiked, backpacked and fished all spring, summer and fall as I was growing up in Colorado. It was a really easy transition for me when my (now) husband wanted to take me out on the water to throw some flies. Fly fishing is absolutely his passion and he wanted to show me something that meant a lot to him. I immediately understood the draw to be on the river and haven’t looked back since.

What do you enjoy the most when you are out Fly Fishing? I have always been a nature enthusiast. To be out among all that she has to offer us: sounds of birds singing, the river rushing by, sun shining (or not) overhead is an irreplaceable experience. When there is a fish on the end of the line, that is just the bonus, a bonus I tend to get pretty excited about!

Do you tie flies and if so, what do you enjoy about it? I have tied a few (count them on two hands) flies. I get a bigger kick out of trying to come up with names for the flies my husband ties.

Have you ever encountered issues, bias, or uncomfortable situations Fly Fishing? My husband and I started RepYourWater together and it wouldn’t be successful or exist without both of us. The only issue I tend to run into is when people assume that the company is entirely male-owned, or that he is the sole person behind the brand. I have had to toughen up a bit and not take it to heart and just post a few more pics of me on our social media outlets.

I would probably choose tropical beaches, because the lure of salt water fish is a huge one for me since I have never caught any on the fly.

Summer is all about wet-wading for me and it is hard to find shorts that not only look good but will dry quickly and be comfortable while wandering around in the river.

Name one thing you’d never go Fly Fishing without…Polarized sunglasses, no question!

Whether you’ve been fly fishing for 2 months or 20 years, what advice would you give to someone who just started out in Fly Fishing?Get the fly in the water-you will catch more fish that way than changing your fly, false casting or debating whether to put a cast in that spot! More importantly just go for it and leave the self-consciousness behind. Nature and rivers are quite forgiving. The mistakes you made on your last trip, cast, knot are all but forgotten once you get back at it.

How long have you been fly fishing? I have been fly fishing for about 4 years now. Utah and Idaho have been the perfect areas to explore and build on my knowledge and skills.

Where are your homewaters? My homewaters are in Idaho. I was born and raised in Boise, but I love to travel all around the state to fly fish. The Boise River, The Salmon River, and the St. Joe River are a few of my favorites.

How did you get your start in Fly Fishing? I love hiking and being near the river so it was really only a matter of time before I fell in love with fly fishing. My husband started fly fishing soon after we moved to Utah and I would join him trying my hand at casting once in a while. Then, I caught my first brown trout and it was all over for me. Fly fishing is now one of my favorite activities in the outdoors!

What do you enjoy the most when you are out Fly Fishing? I love the solitude and beautiful scenery I find when I’m out fly fishing. I definitely dig the social aspects of being out there with friends as well, but being out in nature and letting everything else go is unbeatable.

Do you tie flies and if so, what do you enjoy about it? I have tied flies before, but it has been a few years. Basic Nymphs and Terrestrials are all I have experience with, but I’d love to learn more. I enjoy picking new color schemes for tying and then trying it out on the river. I’ve been amazed at what fish will eat. My claim to fame is my bright pink and purple beetle. That thing is surprisingly popular amongst the trout.

Have you ever encountered issues, bias, or uncomfortable situations Fly Fishing? Unfortunately, I’ve had some very uncomfortable experiences while fly fishing in Utah. In 2010, the Utah State Legislature passed a bill (HB141) that took away over 2,000 miles of river and stream access across the state due to private property interests. I’ll be wet wading through areas of river in Utah and be stopped short due to state law. I have had a property owner pull a gun on me and my friends while we were wading in the water and acting within our legal rights. These types of situations further motivate me to support the Utah Stream Access Coalition on reaching our goal of restoring public access to Utah’s rivers and streams. It is my hope that the State of Utah will work with the public to come to a compromise on this issue.

Which trip should we sign you up for….10 days Fly Fishing from tropical beaches or 10 days in the Alaska wilderness? That’s a hard question because both trips are desirable and are experiences I haven’t had yet. I would probably choose fly fishing from tropical beaches at this point because of my obsession with sand bars and saltwater fishing. I love to scuba dive as well so my ideal trip would be in Turneffe Flats, Belize trading off between scuba diving and fly fishing on sand flats.

What’s your favorite fish to pursue and fly to use? My favorite fish to pursue is a tie between Steelhead and Bull Trout. Both of these fish are fighters and so fun to have that one-on-one connection with! I have so much respect for wild Steelhead and the intense trip they make to spawn. Bull Trout are threatened in the United States so I pride myself on treating those beauties with the utmost respect and educating others to do the same. My favorite fly to use is definitely any type of Sex Dungeon streamer. You feel every inch of that baby move through the water and when a fish bites into that, the fun really begins!

Your birthday is coming, and you can have anything your heart desires. What should we wrap up for you? Oooh! Good question! I have been wanting a new pair of waders for a while. I’m looking for a pair that will hold up through my clumsiness and bush wacking while making my butt look good! :)

Name one thing you’d never go Fly Fishing without… I would never go fly fishing without my Smith Optics polarized sun glasses. Ever since I invested in these, I’m able to easily spot fish. Whether it is sunny or cloudy weather, these babies make all the difference. It is so much fun to be able to see the fish, sneak up on them, and cast your fly right over their heads. It is so rewarding!

Whether you’ve been fly fishing for 2 months or 20 years, what advice would you give to someone who just started out in Fly Fishing? My best advice would be to have patience and let go of any expectations you may have of catching fish. I find that all aspects of being outdoors and expanding my knowledge on technique and river habitat is fulfilling enough. Catching fish is a huge bonus.

Thank you, Tara! I’m looking forward to fishing with you, again. And I’ m bringing the Buffalo Trace!

Missy

I used to think my husband, Tim, was crazy to wake up at the crack of dawn every day and I questioned what the early morning fuss was all about. He’d always tell me, “I just love to watch the sun rise.” Now, when I roll out of bed in the dark and find myself standing in a river at 6 A.M. casting my rod and watching the sun peek over the trees and dance on the water, I think of Tim and his appreciation for the quiet serenity of morning and the sunrise.

On the river I find peace and feel thankful for my husband and for my two kids, Kailey and Weston, who support and encourage me, and who always share my enthusiasm for fly-fishing. I feel grateful for them and for all the great men and guides I know who have taught me so much: Toby Uppinghouse Owner of Edge Water outfitters, Doug Ouellette of Calvada Fly Fishing, Kevin Butz, Tim Au Young, Rick of Fly-Fishing Specialties, and Craig Madsen of Montana River Outfitters. All of these men have been a huge help in my fly-fishing journey. Not only have they been my teachers, they have also become true friends.

Many of my friends know that I survived breast cancer at age twenty-six and happily joined the ranks of other survivors. So I was intrigued when Chaz Arthur, founder of Trout Porn and the online magazine, and his fly-rod building friend, Nathan Moore, decided to build and auction off a customized, pink, Trout Porn, fly rod.

Proceeds from the online auction would support Casting for Recovery, a unique non-profit group who organizes free fly-fishing retreats across the country for women with breast cancer. For me, bidding on the rod was a no brainer. I had to have it. As a breast cancer survivor passionate about fly-fishing, supporting Trout Porn and the Casting for Recovery mission to provide women the chance to experience the same, spoke right to my heart. Plus, the rod was pink! I knew it had my name written all over it.

Shortly after winning the Trout Porn rod at auction, I got a Facebook post from my friend, Alice Sternal, who had also bid on the rod. In her post, Alice asked me to please send her the rod so she could fish with it. We joked about how we should organize a fly fisherwoman’s “sisterhood of the traveling pants” type effort and send the rod to any woman who wanted to fish with it.

Nathan Moore, who made the rod, caught wind of our conversation on Facebook and suggested we start a Facebook Page to capture photos of women who borrowed and fished with the rod in different places. Hence, the Fly Gal Diaries Facebook page was created. “Fly gals” can now request a special date on the river with the pink Trout Porn rod. The rod is delivered in its sock with a box full of goodies and requests.

First, users sign the sock and the enclosed Trout Porn flag donated by Whitney Inmon (to honor Chaz and Nathan’s efforts) date the flag, and indicate the city where they reside. There’s a fly box delivered with the rod also, and each woman who uses it puts the flies they used inside the box. There’s even a diary or journal where each Fly Gal writes about the fun they had with the rod, where they fished, what they caught, and anything else they want to share! Finally, each user posts a photo on the Fly Gal Diaries page to capture her adventure fishing with the special rod. When the flag and sock are signed and the journal is filled, the rod and journal will be returned to me. Nathan will keep the fly box with flies from around the world, and Chaz will keep the signed “Trout Porn” flag—all to symbolize the camaraderie behind Trout Porn, the Fly Gal Diaries, and its efforts to promote women’s fly-fishing and Casting for Recovery.

Since the launch of the The Flygal Diaries Facebook page, I have spent one glorious day fishing the Truckee River with the rod, sporting my favorite pink Simms belt, and catching several browns and rainbows. Alice Sternal fished with the rod in Oregon on the Mackenzie River, the Umpqua, and Big Elk Creek. The rod just arrived in Canada to Jennifer de Graas and when she’s done with her adventures, Lizzie Bell, another amazing fly fisherwoman who is also in Canada, will cast the rod.

From Canada, the Trout Porn rod will head back to U.S. to countless other women. If someone wants to use the rod they can contact Missy Paxin or Nathan Moore by friending Fly Gal Diaries on Facebook.

I would love as many women as possible to fish with this fly rod. There are so many beautiful women who are making their way in the fly fishing world in a sport normally dominated by men.

The Fly Gal Diaries page is now even followed by Casting for Recovery who is aware of our effort and has sent a card posted on our page thanking Fly Gal Diaries for their efforts.

Breast cancer affects everyone in some way. Either you know someone who is a survivor or maybe have survived cancer yourself. The Fly Gal Diaries page was inspired by Trout Porn to support programs like Casting for Recovery which help to raise awareness and provide hope for women, allowing them to stand knee deep in water and experience the beauty of the sunrise or sunset, the serenity of the river, and the catch and release ritual of fly fishing–-all for free. Nathan and I are currently working on a new rod that will be donated directly to the California Chapter of Casting For Recovery for women to use at the California retreats

Now, when I think of the beautiful places I’ve fished, the people I’ve met, the chances I’ve had to feel a fish eat a fly, and to hear the scream of the reel as the fish takes off, I know that fly-fishing is something I can’t live without. My hope is that the pink Trout Porn rod will be used by multiple women, in multiple locations, as a symbol of support for those affected by breast cancer and that the rod will represent and celebrate the growing influence of “sisterhood” and community in the sport of fly-fishing.

Alpaca is one of my favorite materials for fly tying – is what I tweeted to the world. And, in comes Andrew Nelson of The Laughing Fly and @thelaughingfly. Nelson started working part time on a friend’s alpaca farm in West Virginia.

“I am a fly fisherman and just recently started tying my own flies. It has been a life long dream to create some form of functional fishing materials. As a young boy, I used to carve wooden top water bass baits and dreamed of creating products that helped others catch fish…so here we are!”

I usually purchase alpaca fibers on ebay, but often they are of natural colors. I have dreamed of having a variety of other colors like olive, salmon, and purple. Too bad alpaca didn’t naturally come in those colors. When Andrew offered to dye the alpaca fibers for me, I was very pleased.

Nelson described The Laughing Fly Suri Alpaca dubbing line as…..”a small batch, artisan product. I personally worked on every step of the process: choosing fibers, washing, dyeing, carding and packaging all done by hand. All fibers were sourced directly from the Crimson Shamrock Ranch here in the mountains of West Virginia. “

Custom dyed alpaca fibers by The Laughing Fly

When I received my box filled with several different colors of alpaca fibers from The Laughing Fly, I was very impressed with the rich, vibrant colors of each batch: olive, purple, salmon, black, cutthroat, light fawn, and white – in both dubbing and “locks” which can be used for wings and or wing posts. The fibers were very soft and smooth.

Alpaca fibers make wonderful dubbing for dry flies because they repel water very well. I remember casting a caddis pattern tied with alpaca fibers that refused to sink.

The first pattern I tested this material on was a dry fly pattern RS2 in a size 20. I found that the The Laughing Fly Suri Alpaca Fiber was very fine, easy to work with and I was able to create a nice body without added bulk. All very important for any flies – especially on a tiny hook! Overall I was very pleased with The Laughing Fly Suri Alpaca Fibers and I will definitely be tying more flies with them.

Now that the ground has thawed (well in most places), I have been able to get out and do some fishing my last try, before posting this review ChristopherFave’s leaders.

Because its the start of a new fishing season, I am taking on the tedious task of making sure I have all the right flies in my fly box, all the appropriate leaders ,fresh floatants, gear, etc.. This past year I have been fishing only leaders tied by our very own Christopher Fave www.christopherfaveflyfishing.webs.com . I feel to give a product an accurate review it needs ample amount of time being used, to have an accurate opinion . On the last trip I took about a week ago I decided it was time to let the world know.(my opinion that is)

During my use of the Fresh water leaders( 9 foot 4x, 5x and 6X) I am finding that the blood knots are smooth and I have had little to no problems with the materials gliding through my guides. ( No hang ups in other words). The leaders ability to help dissipate the cast (or turn over flies one might say) has been flawless. I have not had any break offs at knots nor have I had any issues with kinks or bends in the leaders.

In the past with Rio leaders I have had to straighten them several times to get them to “lay down.” This has not been an issue with these. A lot of people like to use a butt section, about 10 to 12 inches on the end of their fly line . This is usually tied on with Maxima or Amnesia because it is a stiffer material. With Mr. Fave’s leaders there is no need for a butt section. The leader does all the work necessary.

No fish in this tub…

I have not used any of Christopher’s salt water leaders as I am in Idaho, and the closest thing to salt water here is an Epsom salt bath. A little worried if there were fish in my bath water (but then again maybe not).

When asked how Christopher got started on making hand tied leaders, his answer was simple .”It started 25 years ago with my grandfather”. He tied for local shops and before he knew it they were in shops all over the world. They are also Nationally endorsed as a fundraiser for Trout Unlimited . http://www.tu.org/about-tu . Now all of the leaders are hand tied by Christopher Fave in Pennsylvania, based off of his tweek of George Harvey’s formula. I have only personally used Christopher’s fresh water leaders. The other types of leaders that are available through him are Cold ,warm, and saltwater species , even indicator leaders.

It is said that once you find something that works stick with it. I am tickled pink with Chrstopher Fave’s leaders, and I know for sure that’s what’s going in my gear bag this season.. So when one reaches in my gear bag because they forgot a leader. That’s what they will be using. Or they just wont fish…..

As I watched director, Eric Steel’s documentary of Megan Boyd in his latest film, “Kiss the Water,” I felt as if I was entering this mysterious woman’s soul. A woman who never married and lived alone; a woman who loved to dance; a woman who tied beautiful flies but never fished. Megan Boyd, who passed away at the age of 86 in 2001, spent her life tying salmon flies for local fishermen and royalty, including Prince Charles. The Queen awarded her the British Empire Medal, however Megan did not attend the invitation to pick it up for she would not have anyone to watch her dog.

“Kiss the Water” is a mixture of poetic animation, interviews of people who have known her, and beautiful cinematography taking place in the Scottish Highlands where Megan lived. I felt the animation captured Megan’s soul and dreams – making one see how she viewed her flies. She did not tie flies for the fisherman but for the salmon who would be attracted to it’s beauty and artistry. The interviews revealed how well respected Megan was by the community. This woman may have lived in solitude in her little house, but she was never truly alone. And the cinematography captured the simple, yet beautiful landscape that surrounded her home.

Director, Eric Steel has done a fine job of capturing the dream-like life of Megan Boyd – a woman of mystery. We may never know what really went through Megan’s mind, but Eric makes you feel like we were allowed to take a peek into her intimate passions.
