Sometimes I forget how little I know about Miles: I haven't even owned him for a full year yet. We fit together so well, it's easy to think I know exactly how he'll react in certain situations; but the reality is I'm still learning his personality and how best to manage him and keep him happy and healthy. So far, Miles and I have competed in only three shows together, and each time out I've learned a lot.

Prep Work

Before we ever step foot into the show ring for our class, there is a lot of planning and prep work that has to go on. For me, I consider the entire week leading up to the show part of our "prep time." I schedule a lesson early in the week, and make sure my horse is clipped and groomed well. I try not to do anything too strenuous, so trail rides and light hacks are usually in order. I usually give Thursday off (since we typically trailer to the show and school on Friday) but I don't think that's the best approach with Miles.

Lesson #1: Do a light hack on Thursday

Once we arrive at the show, Miles never has any trouble settling in and scarfing down some hay and water. Thus far, he looks quite relaxed in the stall, without a care in the world. But I've found out that he's a bit tricky that way, and it's all an act.

Lesson #2: Lunge before you ride on Friday and Saturday (maybe even Sunday too)

Remember to always lunge in a bridle and gloves, and don't be fooled by the western pleasure jog. He needs at least 30 minutes of lunging on Friday, and probably Saturday too.

During the Show

It's not hard to keep Miles happy during the show because all he really wants to do is eat; which is 100% peachy keen with me. We bring lots and lots of hay and treats, sit back and watch him stuff his face. When your riding, the most important thing is to continue to keep him happy.

Lesson #3: Evaluate his mood and adjust accordingly

If he wants to walk, let him walk. If he doesn't want to go all the way down to the spooky end of the warm-up, cut five feet off; it's really no big deal. When I ask for a canter departure, wait until he's happy and ready to do it. Miles is a very willing horse, but he can also be sensitive. Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath, wait a second and then try again when he's in a better mood.

On course, I need to remember my horse's little quirks. Like that he jumps better long than short; his change from right to left is tougher and when he's tired, he jumps flat. I know how to correct all of these things, but they don't get done if I don't think about them.

Lesson #4: Ride the entire course, not just the obstacles

After the Show

I like to think back and reflect, which I think is very valuable. But sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the little details. In the end, it's important to look at the show as a whole: did I have fun? Was Miles happy? Because those are the things that matter most.

Lesson #5: Enjoy the ride

Because Miles was just a bit too energetic on Saturday, Trainer and I decided to lunge Miles Sunday morning as well. We started to the left, and he was pretty good. We went around for about 15 minutes and then I changed direction. At which point Miles freaked out, and lost his marbles. He started cantering and bucking, and proceeded to drag me across the ring and out onto the concrete before I finally got him back under control. As soon as Miles stopped, I realized I was shaking about to lose my breakfast. His antics were just so unexpected, and I really thought he was going to get loose for a second and go galloping around the fairgrounds.

So I headed back to the barn, switched bits on the lunging bridle and attempted to compose myself. When I headed back out, Miles was none-to-pleased; although instead of trying to run away, he just refused to go forward. I'll admit, at this point I was pretty upset and I really got after him. But after our "come to Jesus" moment, he lunged well enough. 45 minutes later Miles was huffing and puffing, so I called it quits.

By the time it was our turn to jump our final two hunter rounds, Miles was tired. Good. So we did just a little warm-up, and went in. We planned to continue doing the add-stride on Sunday as well, since both Miles and I were tired. Our schooling trip was okay, but we had some chips and late lead changes. But once we got rolling, things were much smoother.

In the first hunter round I chipped in pretty badly to the first fence, and Miles knocked down the rail. I was mad at myself, because it was all my fault; I should have legged him for a longer spot, knowing he'd jump better that way and that since he had less of a motor, getting him back wouldn't be a big issue. But oh well, live and learn. We got a seventh, due to the pulled rail.

Our second hunter trip was the best of the show. I really attacked the first jump, and galloped on in the corners to get my leads. We got the same placing for our effort (4th) but I was really, really pleased with my ride.

In the under saddle, Miles was great; he dealt with some sticky traffic situations like a total gentleman, didn't break despite having to canter for five laps straight and really stayed long and low during the trot. I couldn't have asked for better! We ended up with another fourth, which is just fine. Overall, I just don't think the judge on Sunday liked Miles very much; and that's hunters. Sometimes you get a judge that loves you and sometimes you don't.

To say that I was nervous going into our warm-up round on Saturday would be an understatement. We were at our first A Rated show, the ring was a little sloppy and oh yeah, my horse had never seen the jumps before. Despite lunging in the morning, Miles was very alert and I found myself with just a bit more horse than I would have liked. And even though our first round was rough, I was proud of myself for going in cold and making it around without any major snafus.

Sure, he backed off the first fence, and played (a lot) after our third fence. He missed a few lead changes and we had some really tight spots, but overall he listened and we didn't have any super scary jumps. For me, that's a good trip considering the circumstances! Trainer and I decided to stay on a slower pace, and opt for the add-stride the entire day. In hunters, fences are set in lines, with a specific number of feet between the fences, which correlates to a specific number of strides. At my level, adding an extra stride into these lines is typically fine and doesn't make you significantly less competitive; however it's important to be consistent. So if you add a stride in the first line, for every subsequent line you need to do the same.

For Miles, the slower pace isn't difficult, but it does make his lead changes tougher to accomplish... and on Saturday the sloppy rings didn't help. So even though we missed a few, I was okay with it. I wasn't working on that, so I didn't really set him up for them. If he got them, he got them. If he didn't, we broke down to the trot and changed our lead that way. For me, the big win was seeing my distances and sticking to those decisions; I stretched up stayed confident. Plus, with each round, I improved; I remembered I needed to "whoa" in the lines, especially towards the end of the course and I used my outside aids during turns to help us get straight more quickly. Our first judged Hunter trip:

We earned two thirds over fences on Saturday, which I was really, really pleased with. I know a lot of people don't practice fences before they have to show, but I always have; and it was nerve-wracking to not have that opportunity this time. But I conquered the challenge and rode well. And at the end of the day, what more can you ask for?

I have so much to tell from the show this weekend; it was certainly a roller coaster of emotions but I had a great time and I learned so much. In an effort to stay organized I'm going to break up my show report a little bit differently this time and focus on each division, rather than go day by day. Hopefully it all makes sense, but if it doesn't, I trust ya'll to let me know :-)

After not being able to school on Friday, and scratching our plan of riding in the Hunter Derby, I decided I still wanted to challenge myself and show in something other than just our regular hunter division. I'd already shown in Equitation Over Fences at the previous show, so I opted to add Equitation on the Flat and show in the entire Limit 2' Equitation division.

But me being me, a flat class wasn't nearly exciting enough (mostly because my equitation on the flat sucks because I never, ever practice it) so I also opted to add a 2' Medal class. For those that aren't in the hunter/jumper world, a Medal class is the same as an Equitation class, but it typically has two phases: an over fences portion and a flat portion, which are combined to determine overall placings.

All of the Equitation classes were held on Saturday, which meant in order to be successful, I really had to get my shit together. Our warm-up round was a bit tough, and it turned out despite his lackadaisical attitude on the lunge line that morning, he was still bright-eyed and bushy tailed. He celebrated hard after one fence and I almost came off... but I held on and finished my course. I had two hunter rounds after that (which is a story for tomorrow) and then my Limit Equitation Over Fences. It was a simple course, no rollbacks or bending lines or anything... which was kind of disappointing. But nonetheless, I went out and rode and focused on stretching up and looking ahead, just like we've been practicing in lessons.

And the round was beautiful! Definitely our best trip of the day, even with a few short spots coming out of the lines. I did an great job of making decisions and sticking to them, especially on the approaches to the singles; that far outside single was tough, and I kept seeing just a slightly longer distance to it, but I stayed with Miles well, and balanced back afterwards each and every time. Overall, our effort was good enough to get us first place out of seven! And in case you're keeping track, Miles and I have now won TWO equitation over fences classes so far this year. I guess we can equitate after all!

After the fence round, we had our flat. It went fine; Miles was a bit up and not quite as relaxed as I would have liked, so I focused more on him than I did thinking about my equitation, since it kind of sucks anyways. By the end of the class, Miles was a bit more soft and his head wasn't quite reaching for the sky anymore, so I called it a win. And we ended up placing fourth -- which was not last! Go team! Overall, our placings were good enough to garner our very first Champion tricolor, which came complete with a baggie of treats for Miles and a snazzy saddle cover. GO team!

Unfortunately our 2' Opportunity Medal class didn't fill, so everyone scratched and I was left as the only one in the class. It was the same course as our Equitation Over Fences, so I just jumped around again and got myself a (hardly deserved) first place ribbon. The judge asked me (jokingly) if I wanted to drop my stirrups and go in for the flat. I laughed and said "No way, I'm too old for that!" I think he just wanted to see if he could get me to fall in the mud, especially after my near-acrobatics in the warm-up earlier that day.

Not As Planned, Part Deux

It's the second show of the season for Miles and I, and again schooling day went not as planned. Last time it was Miles's fault (although with such a cute face, it's hard to ever stay mad at him for long), but this time it was Mother Nature who got in the way. As soon as we pulled onto the show grounds, the skies opened up and let out a torrential downpour.

It rained for a good hour straight, and by that time the rest of the classes scheduled for Friday were cancelled and moved to Saturday morning. The best part? All schooling was cancelled too -- no horses were allowed in the show rings at all. So that meant no lunging, no practicing in our Limit division ring, and definitely not trying out the jumps in the Big Ring for the Hunter Derby Saturday night. Too bad I forgot Miles's floaties at home, I joked with my trainer. But really, I was devastated inside.

I wanted to show in the Big Ring so, so badly. I looked at those jumps yesterday and thought "well, they look a bit wide, but Miles and I could totally do it."

But I'm sticking to my beliefs: if it's not right, we're not doing it. Could we show in that ring without any practice? Probably. But that's just not how I roll; I'm a nervous adult amateur who needs to practice. And my number priority is giving Miles every opportunity to succeed. And going in cold isn't setting ourselves up for success.

So that means, most likely, no Hunter Derby for us, and we'll have to wait until next time to show in the Big Ring. Here's hoping we can make it through our division without any practice tomorrow!

You know the ones I'm talking about: perfect white fences, lush green grass and so clean on the inside you'd eat off the floor. I find it fascinating to compare different styles of stall fronts, and I love analyzing tack room layouts. Maybe I'm a freak... or maybe you enjoy taking a peek into how the other half lives too.

First things first: the outside. If I'm talking dream barn, I want massive, impressive and drop-dead gorgeous. I don't want a run-of-the-mill stable that looks just like every other equestrian facility... I want unique. I think this one fits the bill quite nicely:

Who wouldn't want to drive up to that everyday?!

Of course, acres upon acres of rolling pastures are a forgone conclusion. And they'd probably look like the ones above: perfectly manicured and mowed, with big water troughs and run-in shelters for those pesky summer pop-up storms. I could go either way on the fence color, but they'd of course be in perfect repair. There's nothing worse than broken boards and peeling paint on a fence line.

While we're still outside, let's talk arenas. 'Cause my dream barn has arenas all over the damn place. I want a big ass outdoor sand ring (with that super cool footing they have at the Kentucky Horse Park), a grass arena, a jumping field and whole bunch of connected trails. With hills.

And of course a few indoor arenas wouldn't hurt either -- a bigger one for jumping and a smaller one for flatwork (and winter turnout) would do just fine. Bonus points for sweet architecture and really high ceilings. And I'll take more of the KHP footing in those rings too.

Since we've moved inside, let's discuss stalls. Now this is where things get tricky for me. I've seen so many pretty stall fronts, I don't know how I'd ever choose just one style. So I guess as long as the stalls are big and airy, I'm happy. My architect can decide on the design -- I mean, that is what I'm paying him for, right?

Automatic waterers (heated in the winter), fly spray system and fans in the summer would all be there too... cause ponykins needs to be comfortable! I'd also really like runs off the back with awnings, I think. Miles hates to be cooped up, so maybe some mini-paddock time would help him out. And since the biggest pain about runs is keeping them neat and tidy, with all of my wonderful staff I wouldn't have a thing to worry about.

Finally... the tack room. There are so many options for greatness here, I'd really have to spend some quality time with the architect again. Although, something like this would do quite nicely:

I promise, Transformational Thursdays is gonna be a thing and you'll all thank me for posting about it first. I thought about calling it "Transformational Thursday - Procrastinators of the World Unite" but it was too long (haha). Anyways, the point is I'm gearing up for horse show extravaganza: three shows in four weekends. This year, it's going to include my first ever "A" rated show, potentially my first time showing a Hunter Derby and maybe even my first time showing 2'6". So as I prepare to embark on what is sure to be a thrilling ride, I thought a look back to a year ago was in order.

Last year, at this time I was showing my trainer's horse, Vinnie. We did a similar gamut of shows right around this time, and while I remember it being exhausting, I also felt like I learned a lot. Since then a lot has changed: I bought my own horse and we're consistently jumping 2'3"-2'6" in lessons. But at the same time, some things haven't changed. I'm still showing at the same height (2') and I'm still riding in the same Limit Hunter division. It's easy for me to hear that and think "I really haven't come very far."

But that couldn't be further from the truth. I can feel how much my riding has improved. And there's nothing better than seeing the photographic evidence. So here's my transformational thursday -- just look my position from the two photos below:

June 14, 2013 to May 24, 2014

I look like a totally different rider! The most noticeable differences are in my upper body and my legs, I think. I have so much more break over at the hips in the second photo, it's just unreal. And my legs, while certainly not rock solid, look much stronger. Sometimes it's just good to remember that hard work does pay off.

Wordless Wednesday: All Smiles

It seems the key to Miles's happiness (and avoiding Mr. GrumpyPants) is keeping things interesting, and mixing up our exercises. When we're outside the ring, Miles is great: perky ears, willing to go forward and generally a total peach. Even if we work in the ring for a bit, take a walk on the grass and then come back into the ring for more work, he's always happier to do his job.

Keeping this little revelation in mind, my trainer set a very... interesting pattern of jumps for our private lesson last night. It was four jumps in the very center of the ring, set in the shape of a plus sign; the instructions were to go over a fence, turn 270 degrees and go over another fence. If you did all four fences in a row, you would make a sort of cloverleaf path. Clear as mud? Here's a video of our best round to help you out:

I was apprehensive about the exercise at first. It was unlike anything I'd ever done before, and it looked kind of complicated. But I put on my game face and went at it; and once I got the hang of it, it was actually kind of fun! The complicated pattern made me plan my path and kept me focused on looking forward, while the tighter turns forced me to stretch up, and keep Miles even between my hands and legs.

Overall, Miles really enjoyed showing off his handy side, and I liked how much I was challenged mentally and physically. We got to work on some of the things we've been focusing on in lessons and flat rides (making decisions, looking ahead and stretching up), so it was a great lesson to have right before a show. Plus, since we nailed the exercise, I got a nice little confidence boost!

We ended the lesson by jumping a few small crossrails in the grass outside the ring. Yes, you did read that correctly: the ring baby jumped outside of an enclosed space! The jumps were small, not even 18", and they were in a grassy space right next to the ring, so it's not like we went very far. But it was crazy how both my nerves shot up and how EXCITED Miles was to JUMP IN THE GRASS! He was so cute, moving forward, ears perked, jumping great. Unfortunately there's no photographic evidence... so I guess we'll just have to do it again soon!

Whenever someone asks me why I have a horse, or why I spend so much time at the barn, I've always replied: "because I love riding." But this weekend I had a revelation; I don't love riding, I love horses. I trekked out to the barn on Sunday, planning to really do work. I had a plan for my hack, which included lots of transitions, lengthening and shortening at all three gaits and keeping steady contact throughout the ride. I figured it would take 30-40 minutes for me to accomplish all of this, especially since I hadn't ridden the day before.

20 minutes later I stood in the center of the ring, with nothing left to do. Miles was fantastic, doing everything I asked and we hardly had to repeat any movements. So we went for a walk -- up the lane between the pastures and around the back field. Then we went behind the big indoor and back to the barn. When I hopped off, I realized how much I just enjoy being at the barn with this amazing animal.

It wasn't just that we had an awesome ride in the ring, and that Miles was brave and (mostly) relaxed on our walk. It was how much I loved grooming him, and how much pride I take each and every day in his condition. It was how peaceful I felt hand-grazing him after a quick rinse.

Showers on hot days are sooooo nice

When you have goals you're working towards it's easy to zero in and lose track of the big picture; sometimes those quiet moments at the barn just slip by you. But for me, it's about the journey; it's all about enjoying the small things with my horse... because not so long ago I didn't have a horse to enjoy them with.

I hate shopping. Well, at least I hate shopping for normal items like work shoes, jewelry and jeans. I've worn the same $8 black flats three times a week for the last year and half. They have holes in the heels, but I refuse to spend $60 on a new pair. And makeup? Forget that. I buy my liquid eyeliner and mascara from CVS. I don't even think I've ever stepped foot into Sephora.

But when it comes to show outfits, or buying tack... that's a whole 'nother ballgame. I love to window shop online during my lunch-hour for pretty new show jackets and fancy open front boots I have absolutely no use for. I imagine the feeling of longing I get when I look at a picture of a full-calf 17.5" CWD 2G is akin to what most girls feel looking at Manolo Blahniks. And online shopping is the best for those of us with not enough cash to purchase, because we can ooh and ahh and look at all the pretty things without filing for bankruptcy.

Plus it's a lot easier to simply not click the "add to cart" button than it is to physically walk away from a brand new bridle on consignment at the tack store. So generally, my philosophy is to shop online. But every once in a while the devil inside me rears her ugly little shopaholic head and I find myself sitting in front of the tack store.

This is probably where a 12-Step program would come in handy for us Tack Ho's. Because then I could call my sponsor and they could talk me out of actually walking into the store. Alas, that program hasn't been set up yet. So when I found myself sitting outside Equus Now yesterday, I walked right in.

I went in with a plan of window shopping for new tall boots and picking up a few essentials. I knew my plan wasn't going well when I found myself somehow standing in the back of the store in the middle of consignment... oops. Unfortunately nothing there sparked my interest, so I moved on to the bell boots I needed (of course Sir Miles only fits in Beval *face palm*).

But then shit really hit the fan when I was caught by a sales clerk ogling the tall boots. See, mine are starting to get pretty thin on the inside of the calves, and I'm terrified I'm going to rip a hole in them right before a horse show. (I think justification is somewhere on the list of "signs of an addict".....)

Anyways, Hubby has approved a new pair of SHOW-ONLY tall boots, most likely just to shut me up. But the pair of Tredstep Donatellos I ordered from SmartPak just weren't quite right. I was waiting on a pair of Ariat Heritage boots on back-order... but of course the clerk convinced me to try the Ariat Challenge boots they had in stock. Of course they're more expensive than the Heritage line. Of course they are!

Looks even better on!

And of course as soon as I tried them on, I fell in love. The size 9, full calf, regular height were so damn sexy. I looked tall and thin (well, my legs did at least) and I just HAD TO HAVE THEM. And the brand new square toe... omggeeerrdd was it lovely.

And that's how I accidentally spent more than $500 at the tack store. Moral of the story: SHOP ONLINE if you want to keep some money in the bank.

Finesse

Photo disclaimer: I finally got all the pro pictures from our last horse show... so now you will be inundated with them.

I've spent a really long time working on some of the more basic concepts of riding: soft hands, strong core, leg on and eyes up sound like simple principles in theory, but in practice they've proven more difficult to master for me. But I'm proud to say that Miles and I are finally starting to work on some of the smaller details that will improve our hunter rounds, and allow us to move up in height.

In my lesson on Monday night we were not the least experienced pair, nor we were jumping the smallest jumps. We worked on specific tasks that did not just include praying I make it over the fence. A small feat for some, but for me it was a great feeling. I don't mind taking group lessons with those who aren't at the same level I am; In fact, I really prefer that. But to not be the one holding the group back was a somewhat new experience, and one I definitely relished.

We started off over a crossrail, and instead of just focusing on maintaining the correct pace to the jump, I also worked on staying straight afterwards, and not letting Miles drift towards the wall. This was a continuation from our last lesson where I focused on holding my outside aids across the diagonal, and I'm proud to say I remembered the lesson and so did Miles. We checked this task off pretty easily and quickly!

Why bother picking up your feet for 2'?

Then we moved on to a dreaded gymnastic. I hate gymnastics, mostly because I suck at them... and unfortunately Miles isn't the best at gymnastics either. It was a really simple and straightforward set-up: trot up the middle through a set of cones (to keep us straight), jump a crossrail, and then three strides to an oxer. I was nervous going in, and not every time through was perfect but I did have a few jumps that were, in my trainer's words, excellent.

Booyah!

I'm learning that gymnastics really require me to think about several things all at once, and to be successful at them, I need to be able to multitask more than two things at once, and I also need to think the entire way through. So I made myself a short little checklist of what I need to remember:

Have enough pace to the first jump. Don't be afraid to cluck, and add leg.

Don't over exaggerate your motions (release or two-point) over the first jump.

Sit up!

Immediately assess pace, while looking way beyond the next jump.

Decide on a distance and stick to your decision.

Think about flowing over the second (larger!) jump.

Sit up, sit up, sit up! and look around your turn, with your core tight.

Congratulations Tracy, you've successfully completed a gymnastic!! I've said it before, but I'm going to say it again: Miles is freaking awesome. This weekend we went on our very first trail ride together and he was a champ, handling the new scenery well, including getting stuck in the pouring down rain. I had a great time, and couldn't wipe the stupid grin I had plastered on my face. Let me start at the beginning.

I am not a trail rider. In fact, I can count the number of times I've been on a trail ride in the last 10 years on one hand. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I've never had easy access to trails. I don't own a truck or trailer, and I've never been a barn with folks who liked to go on trails. Until now. The barn I currently board Miles at has more than 100 acres of directly connected trails, including several jump fields. Which is absolutely amazing... or at least that's what I'd assumed because I'd never been on any of them.

In an effort to grow some lady balls, as well as find some new ways to keep things interesting for Miles, who tends to get a little bit grumpy the more he's in the ring, I decided I wanted to try to go out on some trails this summer. I've been a bit nervous, so I kind of put it off. I'm a ring baby: that's what I know, so that's where I feel comfortable. But I finally put my foot down, and asked two of my friends to <strike>babysit</strike> escort Miles and I out on the trails on Sunday.

Our escort and trail horse extraordinaire, Dax!

And I had so much freaking fun! Miles was alert, especially in the large open fields, but he didn't spook once and took it all in stride. There were a few "scary" patches of landscape, including deep mud, a drainage pipe and some concrete slabs we had to walk over. Miles balked at first, but it was a polite "um, no thanks." He stopped, stared and sniffed. He gently tried to back up, but he eventually went over everything when he got to follow directly behind a friend. So I'm definitely considering that a win!

On the way back, the skies opened up out of nowhere and poured rain. I've never ridden Miles in rain before... but he couldn't have cared less. In fact, I don't think he minded at all because we got to trot through the open fields on the way back. During which, he was absolutely perfect. He waited until I asked him to trot, never tried to play, buck or run at all. And when I asked him to walk again, he did so immediately. Whatta good pony!

Unfortunately there's no pictorial evidence of <strike>my</strike> Miles's bravery, but I guess that just means we'll have to go out again soon!

Ever since the wedding I've had a bit of a more relaxed attitude about life. I'm not sure if it's because I'm exhausted or because I'm a married woman now, but regardless I'm embracing my new-found zen. A long time ago, before show season ever started I decided to not rush moving up divisions. I've shown at 2' for a few years now, and I really want to move up to 2'6"... it's a big reason why I bought Miles in the first place. But for me, riding and especially showing is about fun. And nothing is fun when you're afraid.

So in my lesson last night I remembered my plan, and embraced it again. Could I show at 2'6" in June? Maybe. But I'm not going to push it; I'll know when it feels right. It might take me longer to achieve my goals, but for me riding is more about the journey than it is about checking accomplishments off a list. I told my trainer when I was looking for a horse my worst fear was buying "the wrong one" because I fall in love. And I'm head over heels for Miles. I'm in this thing, with this horse, for the long haul. And it's finally nameplate official:

Early birthday present from the hubby: Vespucci halter with nameplate that says "MILESTONE, Tracy Beavers"

Last night I had my weekly lesson, and unfortunately it turned into a mostly private lesson as the other horse wasn't feeling well. Miles came out a bit grumpy and lazy (I think he would have rather been out in the field eating grass than jumping!) but none-the-less once he got going, things went fairly well. We stayed at around 2'-2'3", and worked on fine-tuning our pace, as well as right-hand turns. Lately, Miles has been drifting left HARD when coming to a diagonal fence off the right head. I suspect it's because I'm using more right leg and not enough outside aids, so we worked on that quite a bit.

We also added in some "handy" turns, a bending line, as well as some rollbacks. Sometimes things went really well, and sometimes they didn't. But of course Miles did his job and saved my ass. Things to note: when I plan my route, trust my horse and look 6-8 strides ahead things go much, much smoother. Duh.

Overall, it was great lesson. I'm really starting to figure Miles out and learn how to adjust my riding for his different moods (which really are grumpy or easy-going, haha). I'm getting excited for our show in late June, it's just two weeks away!

When Real Life Gets in the Way

After an absolutely stellar weekend, which included (OMG!) getting married, ridiculously gorgeous weather and amazing food, I was rudely and abruptly thrown back into real life on Monday. Sam and I are waiting to enjoy our honeymoon so he can study for the bar exam, so I was back to work at 8:30 a.m.

And let me tell you, it was a doozy. Not only was I playing catch-up after taking nearly a week off, but we're smack-dab in the middle of launching a new website... which is now behind schedule. And the worst part? I found out about a huge lay-off of employees, including all of IT and 2/3 of Finance. While I am extremely grateful to still have my job, I feel horrible for those who weren't as lucky. Needless to say, work is not a happy place right now.

Unfortunately my not-so-great news doesn't end there. Sam and I currently rent an apartment, and our lease is up at the end of August. Last night we got our renewal offer... which includes a $130 PER MONTH increase. #FML So I guess now we're shopping for a new place to call home. Here's hoping we find something we like quickly, and it's not too expensive.

Luckily, the barn has been my saving grace this week. I've had two great hacks on Meatloaf (aka Miles) so far, and I'm hoping to get out this evening as well. When I went out to see him on Monday, he was snuggly and lovely... I think Grumpy missed me a little bit! He didn't even object too much to being brushed... a sure sign that he felt a little neglected while I was enjoying my wedding.

God, that just sounds... weird? strange? crazy? Sam and I have been together for almost six years. He's my best friend and the love of my life. We've certainly been through a lot together, but I'm really looking forward to the memories we're going to make as a married couple. Hopefully, there will be a lot more of this:

We've all been to a show or two that was just simply poorly run. The schedule changed at the last minute; rings are held for forever; ride times are way off... the list of mistakes can go on and on. When you're a competitor in this situation, it's hard not to get pissed off, and let show management hear your displeasure. Trust me, I'm right there with you! It's not only incredibly frustrating when you and your horse are ready to show, but management isn't... and worst of all, it can really impact your performance, that you've worked so hard to perfect.

But I also spent time on the other side of the fence, so to speak, as part of show management. And I promise you, they're not doing it on purpose. Management doesn't want the show to be poorly run, and the office staff isn't happy to hear your bitching. So here are a few tips to let your opinion be known, but to stay calm, cool and collected so that you can still put in your best performance.

#1 Wait for the Right Moment

If you are riding your horse and shit hits the fan, don't lose your temper at that exact moment. Not only are you going to look like a crazed maniac in front of everyone else standing at the ring, but your horse is going to notice your change in attitude.

Instead, walk away, take a few deep breaths and finish your ride first. After all, that's what you came to do!

#2 Be Honest and Clear About the Problem

When I'm pissed, I'm not always logical. Sometimes I blame things on others that they really had nothing to do with. So before you make a complaint, take the time to think it through in your head... or better yet, discuss it logically with a barnmate or friend. Spouting profanities at show management isn't going to get you anywhere; I promise they'll just tune you out.

But if you present a clear, concise and reasonable complaint, show management will not only hear you, they'll respect you.

#3 Walk A Mile in Their Shoes

Adding a little empathy to your complaint always softens the blow. Take a moment to think about what show management is dealing with, and try to be relatively sympathetic. Yes, you're the customer, but if you can see them working hard, or you notice that they're really overwhelmed, just mentioning those simple facts will help ensure that you're heard. After all, you're both here to show, aren't you?

#4 Go Through The Proper Channels

It's never appropriate to complain directly to a judge. Always speak with show management, the show steward or the ring master; don't approach the judge directly. And if you go to a show with a trainer, express your displeasure with them first. Chances are they feel the same, but a complaint from a well-known and respected trainer is always going to carry more weight than the same thing said by Jane Smith.

#5 Let it Go or Get Going

Finally, after the problem has been addressed, you have two options, and only two options. You either let it go and move on, or you leave and don't come back. It's really, really hard for me to drop an issue sometimes, but you're only hurting yourself if you continue to stew about it for hours or days on end. And if it really, really ticked you off, don't go back! Refusing to patron a specific show or management company speaks for itself. Plus, in the end, you'll be happier if sh*t is really that messed up.

What tips do you have for handling a tough situation with show management?

After our awesome rides on Saturday, Trainer and I decided to keep the plan the same for Sunday. I woke up early and lunged my pony. Luckily, our lunge session was much shorter and only lasted about 15 minutes; Miles was tired and so was I. The show moved a bit more speedily on Sunday, so I ended up showing late morning. For our warm-up trip, I wanted to try to keep our pace from yesterday and do the strides correctly.

Unfortunately, I didn't take into account just how tired Miles and I were during our second warm-up round. My eye just wasn't great, and I struggled to find distances. This led to chipping into the first jump and RUNNING to get out of the line in five strides. I came out of the warm-up disappointed, but determined to add leg and raise my eye for our third hunter trip.

But... I didn't. Well, I tried to but my strength and energy just weren't there. So my third hunter trip looked a lot like my warm-up: scattered and uneven. I was so mad at myself after that round, I took a second to walk by myself and cool off. I was riding like shit, and not helping my horse, who was being a saint. That for me is the worst feeling.

So my trainer and I regrouped, and decided to go back to the add stride for our fourth and final hunter round. And it was definitely the correct decision; I was able to see my distances and help Miles when I needed to. We were both much more relaxed and consistent and overall a much prettier picture.

Our final class was the under saddle. After walking around the ring for probably 10 minutes waiting, during which Miles got progressively more and more antsy, we pulled our shit together for a great flat ride. Miles really framed up and moved out at the trot, and was nice and even at the canter. He didn't even get grumpy when we got boxed in! We ended up 6th out of 10, which I wasn't super pleased with, but that's hunters. Either way Miles was excellent and couldn't have gone any better, so I was quite pleased!

In the end, we placed in every single class we entered, with a 7th and 8th over fences on Sunday. After such a trying schooling, we bounced back better than I could have hoped! I am so proud of both myself and Miles for recovering, and I learned a heck of a lot for next time.

Speaking of next time... we decided to add a show in late June to the schedule! It will be at the same venue, and will be my very first time showing at the "A" rated level. I'm pretty excited, and mildly hoping that I get to braid, because I know Miles would look like a STUD in hunter braids.

Saturday morning I arrived at the showgrounds extra early to lunge the wild beast, aka Miles. I decided to put him in a bridle to lunge... just in case. And it turned out to be an excellent idea because the second we got started, the acrobatics began: leaping, bucking and galloping for the first five minutes, before we settled into a nice canter for the rest of the time. After 45 minutes, we went back to the stalls for a nice shower, during which Miles went to sleep. Perfect.

We showed around noon on Saturday, and my mom even made the trip down to watch! We had a warm-up round, two hunter rounds and an equitation over fences round. We decided to start the warm-up doing the add stride pace, meaning the lines were set for five strides, but we did six. Our warm-up round was very nice: a few longer spots into the lines and a few shorter distances coming out of the lines, but overall I was happy. At this particular show, warm-up rounds are judged red/blue: scores between 75 and 79 earn a red ribbon, scores at 80 or above earn a blue ribbon. Our warm-up on Saturday was good enough for a red ribbon! Woohoo!!

Because every Limit Rider needs an entourage

Our first hunter round was also fairly good. We stayed on the same add pace as the warm-up, to make sure Miles and I both stayed calm, cool and collected. I made some mistakes and got some fairly bad chips to two fences, but Miles was a saint and handled it all perfectly! Our second hunter round was better overall, but we got marked down heavily for our initial transition to the canter, where Miles was an ass and kicked out. It was partially my fault, because I could feel him being grumpy, so I should have waited and asked for the transition a few strides later, but I got impatient. Oh well, live and learn! For this trip, we decided to up the ante and do the correct number of strides, which went really well! We still had some iffy spots, but overall I rode well and continued to make decisions and stick with them.

Our best round of the day however, was our last: Limit Equitation Over Fences. For those that have been reading for a while, you know I never show in equitation. I don't have an equitation body, and my focus hasn't been on the finer points of riding for a long, long time. I struggle with just staying out of the way and being effective. But since I was showing at 2', and things were going well, I figured why the heck not? And I am so, so glad I did. I'm going to let this round speak for itself:

And that, ladies and gentleman, was a good enough round to win us our very first blue ribbon! I was so, so proud of Miles and I for riding the rollback so well... especially since we don't ever practice them at home. We were both just so in sync during this round, I could watch it all day long! I opted not to show in the Equitation on the Flat, because it's not something I practice. But I found out later that our win in the Over Fences class was enough to earn us Reserve Champion in the Limit Equitation division!! OUR VERY FIRST TRICOLOR!

Totally redeemed!

It's official: our first show of the season is in the books! Overall, it was an awesome weekend. I had so much fun with my barnmates and everyone rode really, really well. Sometimes the first show of the year is a crap shoot -- horses haven't been off the property in six months, nerves are a little high and we're not quite in the horse show groove yet.

The Plan

Going into the show, my plan with Miles was to school in both show rings on Friday, in preparation for showing in the 2' Limit Hunter division in Ring 2, and the special 2'3" Pam Graham Memorial Hunter Team Classic Saturday night in Ring 1. Miles arrived at the show happily and settled in well.

Going Downhill

Friday afternoon, my best friend N and I got on to school. As we were walking to the warm-up ring, Miles started jigging. His head was straight up in the air, and he was huffing and puffing. Looking back, I think he had no idea up until this point that he was at a horse show. When he turned that corner and saw all the horses and all the rings, I think he was honestly shocked.

When he got to the warm-up ring, a horse in front of Miles had a small freak-out, which sent my horse over the edge. He tried to rear, but settled for jumping straight up in the air with all four feet off the ground. He did a few more crow-hops, before I got him settled enough to walk on. Accomplishment #1: Staying Mounted

N saw the entire fiasco, and asked if I wanted to get off. In true weenie adult amateur fashion, I said yes. But I didn't -- I stayed on and we walked around the ring together, which helped Miles relax. I was able to get a little but of trot and canter in without dying, so I guess that's Accomplishment #2: Not giving up.

Where the Wheels Fall Off

Trainer came down to check on us, and determined that I should go flat in Ring 2, while N jumped around Ring 1. Miles did not enjoy this, and spent the entire 20 minutes crying for his new favorite mare friend. He relaxed when she returned, and I was finally able to do some w/t/c, and jumping. The jumps were small, and totally unintimidating, which I guess is Accomplishment #3: 2' is finally not cause for anxiety. Despite my new-found confidence, our jump school did not start out well. Miles was brave to the jumps, but afterwards was a nightmare. He dropped his head and bucked and played after every. single. fence. We spent probably the better part of 45 minutes stopping after fences, circling and breathing. It was hard, really hard work, but we got through it. Accomplishment #4: Schooling my own horse.

Total Train Wreck

After getting our minds right in Ring 2, we stuck to the plan and headed for Ring I. The fences were set low, 18"-2' tops. I walked around the ring once, and then set my sights on a small diagonal single. Miles jumped it well... and then turned into a bucking bronco. It was all I could do to stay on, and stop him by dragging his face into the fence. We regrouped, and tried another small diagonal single... which went even worse. He bucked so hard afterwards I was sure I was going to eat dirt. Somehow I stayed on... but I did almost crash into three other horses and another fence. We called it quits just as I felt tears brimming in my eyes.

I am an emotional person... so sometimes I just can't help it. I was so embarrassed that I almost ran into other people. I looked like a total jackass, but more importantly, I made my trainer look bad by riding poorly.

But Miles was so amped up that after the fences, he would buck, buck, buck. So went slow, kept the fences down and worked through it -- which we did. Then we went to Ring 1 to see how things would ride in there. Unfortunately, Miles lost his mind... again. He was a rodeo horse after every fence, bucking so hard I couldn't even steer. After two fences where I nearly fell off and ran into every other horse in the arena, we called it quits. Accomplishment #4: Trying new things... even though it didn't work out.

My trainer calmed me down, assuring me that she wasn't upset. Miles just wasn't playing nice today, but I was riding as well as I could. We went back to Ring 2, where things were immediately better. Miles and I were just much more comfortable in that ring, and after a few jumps where we didn't die on the landing, I hopped off.

The New Plan

So after schooling, Trainer and I decided to scratch the Saturday evening Classic. I was really disappointed; but safety is always the number one priority. Plus, my goal for the weekend was to have fun, and looking like a jackass in Ring 1 didn't sound fun at all. All Friday evening, I was pretty upset... upset that I didn't ride better, upset that Miles' reaction took me by surprise and upset that things were not going according to plan.

So it took me a while to remember that this is only my second show ever with Miles. He'd never been to this particular venue before, and he hasn't been off the farm in six months. He's still young -- only seven or eight, and we're still figuring him out. In the end, I decided to make having fun my priority, ensuring that Miles and I have a positive showing experience. Accomplishment #5: Not staying angry and changing my plan.

Foto Friday: Show Prep

Last night I went up to the show grounds to set up stalls and drop off a few of my things. The good news is that the shoe is only about 20 minutes from my house, so it's no big deal to drive back and forth a few times. The bad news is that I have so much stuff, there is no way for it to fit into my car in just one trip. Oops.
I do appreciate common courtesies though, such as saying "please" and "thank you" or washing your hands after you use the restroom, and before you shake my hand. I subscribe to these same philosophies at the barn. Many of us are boarders, meaning we share our facilities with other people... the key word being share.

In my opinion, there are a few things that all boarders should do in order to respect the fellow equestrians who you board and ride with. Everyone has their own pet peeves, but basic manners are important to keeping a barn safe and efficient. So here are my top five boarder etiquette tips. Follow these, and who knows, you might even avoid some unnecessary barn drama! (It's not guaranteed though)

1. Clean up after yourself

If you groom and tack up in crossties or a designated area, please clean up after yourself. I'm not worried about scooping poop within 30 seconds, but don't leave for the night without picking it up eventually. Same goes for the mud you picked out of your horse's feet and all the hair you just brushed off him.

Try to keep all of your "stuff" contained.. whether it's in the aisle or stall because you just finished grooming, or whether it's all of Hershey's blankets in the tack room. Condense what you can so others have some room for their stuff too.

2. Ask before you borrow, and return it clean

Want to try a new bit for your pony before you buy it? Good idea! If Sally has one, just ask her before you gank it off her bridle. And after your ride, CLEAN IT and put it back onto her bridle. Most equestrians don't mind lending stuff to fellow boarders, but if things are always mysteriously disappearing, being returned weeks later and filthy... the generosity isn't likely to last.

3. Know who has priority

If you're riding and someone else is taking a lesson in the ring, be respectful and stay out of the way as much as you can. Did someone already set a grooming box out in your favorite area? Pick a different place to brush your horse.

Always be mindful of those who are less experienced than you... other riders and trainers always appreciate a little extra room for green horse or beginner rider.

4. Be friendly

Know the saying "you catch more bees with honey than vinegar?" It applies to your fellow boarders too. A small "Hey how are you?" can go a long way toward friendship in the barn. Tell me my horse looks good, and I'm instantly in a better mood. You don't have to be besties with every boarder at your barn, but being nice is always appreciated.

5. Help out when you can

We've all been in a situation where just one more pair of hands would be so damn helpful. So when you see it happening to a fellow boarder, take 5 minutes to do just that and lend a hand. Whether it's grabbing a forgotten whip from the tack room, holding a horse while a rider mounts up... or helping catch a loose horse your fellow equestrians will really, really appreciate it. And then when you need help, they'll be there for you.

What is your number one etiquette tip for boarders?

I will be the first to admit I haven't ridden a lot of horses... and don't know very much about bits. Add that to the fact that I tend to enjoy a more minimalist look (probably another reason I show hunters) and you'll see why I have no variety when it comes to bits. When I bought Miles they showed him in a rubber pelham, and flatted in a hunter gag. Why? I couldn't tell you. The day I brought him on trial I took the reins out of the gag loops and turned it essentially into a loose-ring snaffle.

Miles's previous bit rotation

Approximately 10 days later, I bought Miles and sold the gag bit. I rode him in a plain, single-jointed D-ring snaffle all winter, with zero issues. He was a bit fussy with his mouth sometimes, gaping it open when I wasn't as soft and forgiving with my arms, but that was about it. Of course, me being the perfectionist I am, I thought I'd experiment a bit with bits (that was a terrible play on words, sorry!).

So I tried a few variations. Miles hated the loose ring french link, but liked Jess' Eggbutt Sprenger. Unfortunately at $160, it was a bit out of the budget (okay, seriously, I promise to stop with the terrible puns!). So I tried a single-jointed D-ring Happy Mouth. And it was love. Miles is much happier about contact with this bit, and more willingly accepts contact. Every once in a while he gets a titch on the forehand, but a few half halts and some leg fix that in a jiffy.

The true test will come this weekend when we ride in the Happy Mouth for the first time at a show. I'm bringing my regular steel D-ring snaffle and a slow-twist just in case I have too much horse... but honestly, I think it will be just fine!
