In the centre of the group of dogs watching is a Belgian... do you think he looks a little like Wellard from Eastenders?

Actually he should do! He is the 'Wellard' actors grandson... so Wellard is now a proud grandma of a budding animal actor!

The winter here in the UK seems to have been going on for ever! Dogs get covered in mud or soaked every time they go out for exercise. Not to mention the dangers of frozen stretches of water in ponds and canals especially - let's hope it is soon over and we get a drier and better spring and summer which is more suited to outdoor pursuits, especially dog agility!

Mutts v. pedigree dogs!

Did you see the much publicised Pedigree Dogs Exposed [on UK TV] which has left most dog breeders and exhibitors incredulous and angry, and others feeling that it may have served as a timely reminder that there are issues that need addressing by the KC and breeders before it becomes too late?!

Then there was the Martin Clunes dog programme [in 2 parts] which was MOST interesting... and did touch on the same negative health problems occuring in pedigree dogs in the last programme. If you missed both programmes and own a pedigree dog do try and see if any of your friends taped the programmes. Most worrying!

The health problems appear to be getting worse and worse. Just looking at some breeds makes you worry - think of the poor Alsations, whose back ends and legs look all wrong, and from what was said on the programme it is being encouraged by the Kennel Club as the way they should be! But it causes untold problems later in life, and not that much later, either!

Arthritis, heart problems, heads too small for the brain, poor articulation, breathing problems, and so much more is being increasingly found within the pedigree dog breeds - in breeding is a major problem, as is breeding for required TYPE for showing. More worryingly, dogs with known problems are being made champions and are being bred from in large numbers - increasing the problem exponentially.

If you are thinking of a new dog for your sport - a working dog, from working stock, a mixed breed, a Heinz 57, would all be perhaps better bets.

The mental anguish, the vets costs, and the final outcome of this ticking time bomb is something perhaps best avoided.

It was horrific to hear how some of those poor animals suffered, and all in the name of 'best of breed'! I know of several people who couldn't bear to watch all of the programme - but it is best publicised, whilst hopefully, there is still time to at least partially reverse the harm being done to pedigree breeds.

I have heard plenty of complaints about the RSPB not allowing dogs on its reserves... but, I must admit though I do find it annoying myself, I can appreciate their stance when some people just won't keep their dogs on leads when specifically requested to do so, and some just won't clean up after their pets. This attitude makes it extremely difficult for responsible owners, and is so anti-social!

That said, I have found plenty of RSPB reserves which do allow dogs on leads to visit and have enjoyed visits to Dinas in Wales, which is not to be missed; and to various sites in Scotland with our dogs.

Have you enjoyed the Springwatch series on BBC TV these last four weeks? It is now, sadly, coming to an end with the last special scheduled for tonight I believe.

The RSPB states that it has had a good increase in memberships following the programme. You have an option to option to choose Bill Oddie's "How to Watch Wildlife" book as a free joining gift until the end of June. [If you already have a copy of it, why not put it aside as a gift for someone special.]

Summer Pests and Diseases

With summer just about to be upon us [hopefully!] in the Northern Hemisphere the following advice is at its most pertinent. As the warmer months are a prime time for pests such as fleas to spread - also watch out for ticks - it is a time to be vigilant and to check your pet regularly.

"It is very important that fleas are dealt with promptly, as they
can spread disease such as tapeworm, typhus and tularemia. Not only
that, but the itching can drive your poor dog crazy!...."

Flyball and the UK climate

The British [UK] climate always makes outdoor events a challenge!

When people have to travel to qualifying events for flyball or agility shows they often stay in camper vans or caravans [even tents]... so far this spring the weather hasn't been kind.

But a wet and windy winter and spring is often followed by a dry period - well we can hope, can't we [or dream]. Events take place despite the weather and it's great to be enjoying our sport even with the extra challenge provided by the UK climate.

With the extra fear of slips and sprains on wet ground, is now a good time to look at your pet insurance?

I have heard very good reports regarding:-

They take on older dogs and pay your vet direct... at least this is what I have been led to believe. I'm going to check it out further, and may even change over to them as a pet insurance for our seven year old RR.

This post is rather a miscellaneous collection...

Crufts is long over and forgotten! Personally, I think the coverage this year was better than we have had for some time. The extra programme devoted to things other than best in breed and show was a real plus.

Flyball, agility, and dancing to music all had some good coverage on that show... good to see.

British Summer Time [BST] is now with us, with it I hope for some better weather for all outdoor dog sports and training!

Health news for today is one of the many blogs by Dr Eddy... you'll find us on page 25 of his list of Neighborhoods. There is a lot info on health issues and quite a few interesting dog blogs to be found there too.

Dogs, dogs, dogs... it can only be Crufts

Crufts is nearly with us... it is from 6th - 9th March and held at the NEC Birmingham, if you cannot visit in person you will find that it has coverage of an hour daily on the BBC... enjoy!

Crufts was officially 'launched' in London in readiness for its NEC show, and to highlight the way in which dogs and people nurture and look after each other, Pets as Therapy and five PAT dogs were joined by dog lover James Caan of Dragon's Den and director of Fit Fur Life, which promotes the rehabilitation and training of dogs.

Not long now till we'll be seeing Crufts on the TV again!

Let's hope that Flyball will get better coverage this year... and less of the pretentious waffle!

Early March means Crufts again, and perhaps some other doggy programmes will be scheduled too after the Crufts show. Last year was quite good for new dog orientated programmes.

[I don't know if you saw the sheepdog trials which are scheduled over the Christmas period on UK TV... although they don't get the amount of coverage they got when they were first introduced many years ago, at least this last programme was a vast improvement on the ones which were shown for the previous 2 or 3 years!]

Christmas is such a busy time... new puppies take a lot of love and looking after, lots of time is needed... so Christmas and puppies are definitely not a good formula or mix.

Fireworks!

The 'season' or the celebrations for bonfire night seem to be spread over a longer and longer period each succeeding year in the UK!

So many poor dogs are terrified of the bangs, they hide, or they shiver and shake with fear, or both... I am hoping it will soon be finished with for their sakes.

If you have a fearful pet just try to reassure it, talk to it, and say positive things about the fireworks... as in 'isn't it pretty' in an upbeat voice! Some people say this works, worth a try!

We are so lucky in that our rescue dog seems to ignore them completely. Though one evening we were outside and some rockets went off and he just stood there with his head on one side and watched and seemed MOST interested. He just seemed to be admiring them!

You know how vulnerable your pets are when they come into contact with traffic - now please let me point you to a website which will make you think of the other animals who are in danger from the increasing amount of traffic on the roads.

The website I am going to point you towards is based in America, but the thought behind the email which I received from them applies equally to many, many countries.

Hop over to the Defenders Organization to check their 'Watch Out for Wildlife' posting. Large animals can be seriously injured or killed so please take care and slow down where signs are posted warning of animals.

Even if you don't care about the animals... your car, and maybe you, won't come off scot free!

In the UK there are a growing number of accidents involving deer, and they can be quite serious to the car, the occupants, and the poor deer who often appear from nowhere and dash out in front of anything.

Also please spare a thought for the hedgehogs during the spring, summer, and early autumn - and now there are increasing numbers of otters being killed on our roads.

If the only male in an area, or the only female for that matter, is killed the area will be without a breeding pair... please take care.
