I've always been good with students relationally but I think that I tended to avoid spiritual talk for fear of alienating students and hurting our relationship. What I've realized, thanks to a number of resources is that students expect you to talk spiritually to them.

Now ofcourse you don't want to only talk spiritual/religious things with them, it's hard to build a friendship on that but to bring it up occasionally when it's relevant has really helped my ministry.

So now I don't hesisat to bring in the spiritual and I also encourage the volunteers I work with to do the same because I think alot of us have felt that way.

So when a student and I are really getting into a conversation about spirituality I give them these 5 questions that I feel when answered honestly give me a good idea of where they are at mentally.

I'd really like your feedback on these. I realize these questions are missing things like prayer and Bible study but I feel like finding out what their decisions are is more important. I mean why ask them to pray if they don't even know who they are praying to. I don't mind feedback on that line of thinking either.

The 5 questions:
1. I know that God exists
2. I know that Jesus was and is God.
3. I know that Jesus died for my sins.
4. I know the Bible is the word of God and I will follow what it says the best I can.
5. I'm going to do my best to follow God for the rest of my life.

Thoughts?

This has been bugging me

So I haven't blogged for awhile but this has been bugging me so I'm going to vent alittle.

So I'm the Jr. High guy at NorthWest church and I've been in youth/preteen/children's ministry for a number of years so it shouldn't come as a surprise that I find out that kids are grounded sometimes. Even good kids.

What does surprise me, and what I've never really understood is why parents ground their kids from youth group. To me it's almost like grounding them from manners class. Strangly the answer to them doing something not good is to take something good from their lives.

Now, I realize that in a way it's a compliment to my ministry and I'm really glad we have a ministry that is so much fun that it is a punishment to take it away, but I think there are ways around this.

Here is my idea, if your student is grounded or in trouble call me and I'll discipline them in some way at the youth meeting. Maybe they'll miss some or all of the game, maybe we come up with something else but either way when you take them out all the way they don't get a chance at life change during the message. They don't get a chance to connect with God during worship. They don't get a chance to brush up against our Godly volunteers and have another role model in their lives to show them that being a Christian isn't a bad thing. They don't get a chance to be built up by their own friends in the faith.

Now, I don't want to assume this but the alternative as I understand it is that you don't see the value in the youth group. Maybe we are just a fun, baby-sitting time where you can be sure there is alot less cussing then they'd see on tv. Maybe you think youth group doesn't really benifit them that much. I hope this isn't the case.

I wish parents would realize, just how much of an impact youth ministry can have on students. I've seen lives changed, lives touched and I've seen Jesus move through what is going on in our churches.

I realize this might come off to some people as a: we just want your students for higher numbers game and that I'm just being selfish, but I assure you this comes from my heart. I highly enjoy doing ministry with your student and I very very much enjoy my job figuring out how to best influence their lives toward Jesus.

</end rant>

I feel better.
Fantasy Folly

I was going to write a post about my fantasy football season eventually. Then I felt a challenge (that wasn't really there) from @randyparker about who has had the worst fantasy season.

Let's start off with the middle of the 1st Quarter of the first game of the season. Tom Brady drops back to pass and Benard Polland falls on his knee, obliderating my first round pick. For those of you doing the math at home that's less then 1% of the season. Not only that but I able to ride Brady's 3.27 pts for a week 1 loss.

Another cool fun fact. Until 4 weeks ago I was in second to last place in our league. The weird thing is that I was 2nd in the league in scoring!! The reason for that is that out of the first 7 weeks (my record was 2 wins, 5 losses) 3 of the 5 teams that beat me scored there record high for the season. 1 additional team was only 3 points off his season high. Everyone always had their best game against me somehow!

I had problems in the standings too. Week 6 I won and didn't move up in the standings. Week 7 I lost and I moved down in the standings. Week 8 and 9 I won and didn't move up in the standings. Week 10 I won and finally moved up several spots (I believe it was 4th in our 8 person league. By now my record was my respectable 5-5.

This brings me to the biggest tradegy of them all. I go into my week 10 battle against Jimmy Farrell. After all the Sunday games I was beating Jimmy by .47 points and I had Lee Evans going at Wide reciever against the horrible defense of the Browns. Now I briefly thought about deactivating him just incase he caught one pass, got injured and fumbled, but I thought that was unlikely and I thought I would pad my lead and with my record the way it was I could use every fantasy point I could get. If anyone remembers the game, Lee Evans caught zero passes. Infact the only thing he did was record a tackle on an int (which isn't any points). But it was still okay because I was still winning by .47. Because of this win I was in 3rd and on my way to getting a first round bye in the playoffs. What a triumph that would be from my start! It would be the ultimate fantasy football rags to riches story!!

So I spent most of the next week in 3rd, until Yahoo did a stat correction and took a sack (1 pt) from Miami. For those of you not math inclinded .47 point lead - 1pt=.53 deficiet. I now LOST that game and my standing was now 3rd from last!! Back to rags to me.

There is hope though in this story. I had a hard fought victory last week and I currently sit 4th in the league again. In our league everyone accept the last 2 spots makes it into the playoffs so I'm basically as good as in unless the rhetorical roof falls in. Infact if a couple things go my way, I might even get that 1st round bye!

Either way though, I'm the most dangerous 6-6 team in fantasy football history. I'm still 2nd in the league in scoring and I would have a 5 game winning streak if not for Lee Evans (if he even caught one pass I would have won and would be in 2nd place right now).

Honestly though, if there is one thing this teaches me is that there is always hope and that even when things (even stupid things that don't really mean anything like fantasy football) look down there is always still hope. I really hope I can take this lesson into my real life for when there are real trails and tribulations.

Advent Conspiracy

I think this is tight. I mean the church needs to stand for alot of things like morals and such but when we work from the heart I think that's when we are really moving. I'm in for this (I haven't told Arpee yet!!) but how cool is it that this is so attainable.

Praise God, seriously.

I know I haven't posted awhile. I've been busy.
I have new news that you probably guessed based on the title of the blog: I have a new job!
I'm now the Jr. High Director at NorthWest church. I'm really excited about this job. This is day 3 and so far it's gone really well.
The funny thing is my first Tuesday that I was leading the group was my 2nd day of work! It was pretty crazy but we got through it.
Brett who is my boss and was doing this job before did a great job putting together this group of volunteers. They are awesome and I'm excited to have them.
It's funny to give them a shout out since they'll probably never read this.
Lastly, thanks to everyone who pointed me toward this job. There were a couple of you who encouraged me to give it a try so thanks for that.
I'll be pretty busy for awhile getting my feet on the ground here but I'll probably be able to post more often.

I'm Curious

Alright guys, I have a question for you that I would like everyone to please answer in the comments section:

How do you read my blog? Let me explain with my own example.

When I first started blogging I kept track of my friends blogs by making links on mine. Nearly every day I'd go down the list and open new tabs for each and check for new content. This worked then but it would take a long time with more blogs.

Then I signed up for Google Reader. For those unfamiliar, Google Reader keeps track of your blogs and lists the new content for you. It works especially well in my opinion if you have an iGoogle page which I can talk about if anyone is interested. It's possible to read all of the new post within Google reader keeping them all together but I prefer to click on them so I can read the blog posts on their own site and comment if I choose.

I now keep track of 46 blogs because of Google Reader which is alot more then I used to (just check my link bar on the left side of my blog). These new blogs are not only to keep up with my friends but to also learn and grow and they've been a huge resource. It actually doesn't even take me that long to keep up with those.

So this leads me back to my question: How do you read my blog? Am I in a google reader box? Are you using feedburner? Some other program? Are you just typing in my address whenever you want to check on me?

I'm curious to see how everyone does it, maybe I'll learn something or maybe it'll turn out that a bunch of use your Google Reader and we can share some sites (it works for that too). Maybe I've talked you into trying a new program. Maybe I'll just find out that everyone just checks on my blog every couple weeks.

So everyone who reads this, please answer....I'm begging you :)

Horrible News

As I posted before I have Tom Brady on my fantasy team.
He was my first pick.

Now it looks like he's out for the season, my fantasy season is just about over. He lasted one quarter of his first game.

So I started a support blog for people like me.

Join me, let us commiserate together.

Congradulations Everyone

For the record the first person to congratulate me on my birthday was my sister in Japan. She got a days head start on everyone. (I'm not sure that Japan really is a day ahead, I think she was just cheating).

Anyway, I hope everyone has a happy Jesse day and remember to give everyone a high five.
EDIT: This is probably a good time to share this. Recently while driving through a neighborhood with Arpee, I found an address that is my birthday. So congratulations are also in order to the people in this house on this blessed day.
QB Tom Brady
When NewCov let me go, my first thought was that I would volunteer with the 5th/6th grade students because they mean so much to me. I thought I would do this until I either got another ministry job or I would continue to do it if I got a "day job" meaning a non ministry job during normal working hours.
However, as time passed particularly a very gut wrenching Sunday I realized this isn't possible. There are two reasons for this, one is that is it very hard to divorce yourself from a situation like that and it's even harder to do it partially meaning to do the same thing but scaled back. The other thing is that I don't believe that it's fair for: the kids, because they don't know who to look for for leadership, for volunteers because they don't know how to communicate with you and they feel like allegiances are splitting and lastly for church staff who have to figure out how to deal with you.
One example in my own life that I have is when I did Junior High ministry in the Summer before they hired Jimmy to do it. When he took over I decided to stay on as a volunteer. It was very difficult because I had to defer the kids to Jimmy as much as possible and it was strange for my volunteers who I recruited to go looking at a new leader while I am still standing there. It was also hard emotionally too, and in this present case it is all the harder because I've known these kids 2 or 3 years each.
All this to say that we aren't just "picking up our ball and going home." We aren't leaving because we are perticulaly mad or anything like that. As unhappy as I am with the decision I hope for nothing but the best for NewCov and I know they do will great things for God's kingdom.
I ask you this. Please understand that this isn't simple church shopping for Arpee and myself, this is a major part of us being torn out and we are trying to find out way and figure out how the whole money thing will work out in the mean time.
Criticize us if you like but I think you should see the entire picture first.

What to do next?

Do you ever get to the point where (it atleast feels like) there is so much to do you don't know what to do first?
I know in my mind that that isn't true, I just have to prioritize and take them off my list one by one. Fact of the matter is I'm a pretty fast worker but every now and then I fall in a rut where all the tasks seem to blend together.
It's funny to me that I'm blogging about being busy and yet blogging which takes time but I think this is therapeutic too. Really I just need to get down to business.

Hopefully I'll post a positive report later today that I got so much done. I'd appreciate prayer, I'm having to do a few things that I'm not used to doing because typically I'm looking for "any job" but now I'm trying to stay in career while still keeping roof over head, lights on, and family feed.

All in all though good times,
While these plans are going forward they unfortunatly wont happen with me. Yeah, another big change happend and the church had to let me go for budget reasons. For awhile I thought about getting a day job and staying on as a volunteer but I can see from today (my last Sunday) that it would be too painful and it's always a mistake to stick around when your job changes because it's awkward for everyone (staff, volunteers and kids) because nobody knows how or who to ask about anything.
So at this point it looks like I'll be applying at other churches. I'm going to focus on children's ministry because that's what I love to do. I'm going to miss to miss NewCov which is where I came to faith and where almost all of my christian family is. I've been proud of NewCov often and even defended her during hard times and rough decisions.
As far as money goes it is a hard thing because Arpee is still looking for work and now I don't have a job. We have enough money for the short term and I think something else will come through shortly but it's difficult leaving the kids in our ministries.
This is the first job in my life that I thought I could do as a career. I really enjoyed working with the kids and to have that removed from my life is very painful.
I'm confident that God's hand is on this but it is very hard because I didn't see this coming at all. I pray that Arpee and I can remain optimistic and not get down. The purpose for this post isn't to make you feel bad, think of it as an update and a request for prayer for Arpee and myself.

Vacation Update

Day 3 cont:
The rest of day 3 was blessedly uneventful. We moved a few things around but Arpee and I focused on catching up with season 4 of the Office. We are almost caught up now.

Day 4:
Sunday was fun, we got mom to go with us to church. That was fun because she hasn't gone to church since she went to catholic church as a young girl. We went to Salinas Valley Community Church which reminds me alot of NewCov. I really enjoyed the sermon, they just started a sermon series on Daniel and they covered Daniel 1. The message series is called Choices and he talked about the choices we make when things beyond our control take us to Babylon. Wasn't so much informative but it spoke to my heart and I think it was a good message for me mom aswell. SVCC also does a cool thing where it gives their guest $5 gift cards to Starbucks, I think that impressed my mom above all else.

Day 5:
Was yesterday and it was alot of fun. Arpee and I did a little trip to Monterey. First we stopped at Dominos to get Arpee's favorite lunch. Then we went to the Monterey Wharf then the Coast Guard pier. The Coast Guard pier is fun because there are seemingly millions of Sea Lions. You get the seem them upclose and they fight and play and ofcourse sleep. It's actually pretty cool. The coolest thing however though, which Arpee scooped me on covering it first on her blog, was that we saw dolphins!! That was cool because I grew up in Salinas (right by Monterey) so I've been Monterey many times growing up and I've never seen dolphins. Infact, I saw a sign for a whale watching ship which had dolphins on it earlier that day and I was skeptical because I didn't even think they came here. Now the dolphins weren't as close as they were in the Weaver's pictures but it was still alot of fun to just spot them and to see the playing. They did all of the typical dolphin tricks that you are probably familiar with. I've seen dolphins at Seaworld type places but it's interesting to see them do the exact same thing in nature. We got a good view but unfortunately the camera died. We probably couldn't have caught them anyway because they were so fast. Awesome though.

Day 6:
Is today, Arpee ropped me into watching South Pacific by being mad at me. I think she might have been faking it though, she's pretty diabolical. This should be a pretty lazy day.
My sister Julia is leaving for Japan soon which is a really weird thing. She'll be gone for atleast a year, probably two.
We're also planning on going to a German restaurant either tonight or tomorrow night. It's a fun change of pace since I almost never eat German food.

That's it for now. Feel free to comment that way I can feel loved.
I wish I had a camcorder so that I could make funny videos like Steven, but I would probably also need to be funny aswell.

Day 1:
We wanted to leave Fresno on the early side. We carefully packed everything at our apartment. The plan was to stop by Arpee's Family's house for a lunch time breakfast on our way out. At that point we were going to drop off apartment key, Arpee was going to get a couple movies and I think there was something else aswell. We accomplished 0% of that at Arpee's Family's house.
The drive was good, no traffic persay. We got in probably around 3ish.
My mom (no blog ever) and step dad (no blog yet), just got a new house which is a big time upgrade from their old house. The first thing they had me do was crawl under the house to run some telephone line. I was told that it "clean" under the house because it was new. While I appreciated that there weren't any cob webs or mice or the like, it was not clean or "maneuverable", but the phone line is run thanks to my own heroics. My main mission after I got in was to help put up a ceiling fan. This fan was ridiculously complicated to put up.
After accomplishing all of this and helping them move some stuff I was comforted in know that the big move day was tomorrow.

Day 2:
The move day. We got up nice and early to start the move. We drove to Salinas (closest city, about 15 minutes away) to pick up a moving truck. Turns out they had trouble with this place when they moved all of their stuff out of the their old house and into storage. This time they did the smart thing and called ahead the day before, they were told "no problem". When we got there we discovered a problem. They didn't have a truck for us. The guy behind the counter really had no idea what was going on which was fun because it seemed like he owned the place and maybe even lived upstairs. Luckily for us a lady was turning in a truck that was the same size as the one we were supposed to get. It was weird though because at first he told us we couldn't have the truck then by the end of his explanation he said we could. Go figure.
Some people collect stamps, some coins, some other things. My mom collects heavy things.
The move went pretty good though overall.

Day 3 Part 1:
It's 9:57am right now. The day has just started, we haven't done anything yet which is great because I can barely move right now. Today seems like it'll be a good rest day which is nice because I am on vacation after all. All of their stuff is inside the house it's just a matter of unpacking and figuring out where will end up. It actually seems fairly unpacked already, seems they threw out alot of (non heavy) stuff before the move which I am always a big fan of.

Well, I'll keep you guys updated. I hope everything is going well in Fresno and nobody has died of heat raining from the sky yet.

A Knock at Midnight

Recently I've been thinking alot of Martin Luther King Jr. During times in my life I'm sharing Christianity with folks whose hearts are very hard to everything religious, believing religion is self-help at best and a scourge to the world at worst. Sometimes I would cite Martin Luther King Jr. as an awesome Christian because that's one person that everyone except Klan members are excited about.
I also did it tentatively because I didn't know what Mr. King was about theologically. I know he's done awesome stuff rights and race issues but I didn't know what the Reverend part of his title was about. Was he a black liberation theologian which is at the very least is a very different strange of Christianity or was he more what we would call evangelical but with big dreams and guts? I was further clouded because he's not cited more by evangelicals today, could it be because many of his beliefs didn't line up or is it an oversight?
I decided to do my own research instead of just letting a wiki do it for me. I got A Knock at Midnight from the library and I've slowly started digging in as I have time.
I'm only of his sermons in but what a treat it has been so far. I'm finding it to be an amazing read. Mr. King is an amazing communicator clearly and his messages are very biblically based in my estimation.
Each sermon is in chronological order and has an introduction by editors who knew him. So at this point I'm still in "early King" but I'm really enjoying it. As I keep reading I'm looking forward to finding out if Mr. King stays one of my favorite reverends or a pastor who although he moved civil rights lost out on mainstream Christianity.
Only time, and my reading speed will tell.

Big Changes in the Fall

I'm excited.
You wont recognize Sunday school at NewCov in the Fall. There might be some of the same people around but you wont recognize it. I wont get into details because for one I don't want to ruin any surprise and for two we are working out some of the details. I'm excited though, this is going to be a huge step up.
And for everyone curious the huge step is not firing me :).

Looking for Mannequins

I figured out today that I don't know how to spell the word mannequin. I went with manican, manicane and manikane but google didn't know what to do with them. I secretly knew in my heart that it would be way to simple if it was spelled as it sounds. Usually when I mispell a word Google or microsoft are nice enough to correct me but in this case they left me when I needed them the most so I had to look on the internet and find the word.
Anyway I found the word (clearly) and all is well with the world now. It's funny to be when things are more complicated then they should be. Anyone know if there is a way on the internet to reverse look something up in the dictionary? Decribe it and it goes and finds it. That would be amazing. I'd use it atleast twice a year everytime I had to spell Mannequin.
I just decided to check myself and I found several. They're interesting because they give you alot of terrible results but some good ones aswell so it might work well if you know atleast vaguely what you're looking for.
Man I learned alot today.

Vacation Soon!!

Arpee and I are going for a much needed vacation soon. Starting next Thursday through August 2 we'll get some much need time to relax. Were staying with my mom and step dad because we are poor but it's nice because they live near Salinas which is near Monterey and ofcourse the Pacific pond.
This is going to be a much needed vacation but it's funny because we are helping my mom and step dad move on the 25th and were going to Spirit West Coast for the last part of the vacation.
Your prays would be appreciated, we need some time to relax and have some fun.
I'm really excited, and so is Arpee. Infact she just saw me typing this and got all excited.
I'm pumped.

Wife Swap

So my last 2 blogs have been about TV shows. I feel really weird about this but I think that it's mostly because I'm watching more tv this week. I usually don't have time for much primetime tv because I have alot going on in the evenings but with VBS this week everything in the evenings is canceled and I don't have any energy anyway.
Anyway. I was watching the wife swap show and they had an interesting one. They had a liberal christian family and a conservative christian family. It was interesting to watch. As someone who doesn't come from a Christian background I can see both sides of what they were saying. From a secular background I'd say the liberal Christians came off better but still alittle crazy. Now that I'm a pretty conservative Christian I think that the conservative Christians made more sense, although they were alittle crazy. It was also interesting because the conserative husband didn't come from a christian background (he also called his former life "sinful") so he seemed to lean more toward legalism.
The most interesting thing to me though was the liberal husband. Coming from a liberal background it's interesting to see liberalism in action. My only defense for being a liberal is that I never really stopped to think about and draw everything out to it's logical conclusions (oopss!). Anyway, at one point in the show the liberal husband declares that he doesn't have to live is life by the Bible. Later during an argument he declares that he has lived his life with the Bible as the center. These statements can't both be true but I'm sure they both seemed true for him for arguments sake at the time.
Not to get too political but I think that's why people who are liberal tend to "flip-flop" more. If your foundation isn't solid you are going to be blown around because the conclusions you reach will not make sense.
Believe me, I've tried.

WipeOut

So Arpee and I are watching the show WipeOut! for the first time. Now I'm sure all of you have seen it and it's old news but for us it's new. For those of you who haven't seen it is a game show with really dumb people going through nearly impossible obstacle course. The best part is the commentators, they are so hilarious.
I'd to hear your thoughts on the show.

tagged

I dont' usually do these but when Jim tags you wish something and it isn't spray paint your appreciate it and do whatever he tags you with.

A.
