The Tour rolls on and we've dropped into a hotbed of young talent: Croatia!

The third challenge of the ’12 FMV Tour brings us to Croatia.

GNK Dinamo Zagreb are the biggest side in Croatia, and they will be your club to manage for this stage of the tour. As you are the biggest side in the country you will have the best players, the best facilities, the best youth, and the most money to spend to help you dominate your rivals and qualify for European competition. Despite the fact you are the colossus of Croatia, you will be severely overmatched in Europe and can expect to struggle greatly against the major European sides. Do you have what it takes to keep up the nigh impossible domestic expectations saddled upon the Bad Blue Boys and get results in Europe?

GNK Dinamo Zagreb

Founded in 1945 as a replacement for three clubs disbanded by the Yugoslav Communist Party, the Modri (Blues) are the most successful club in Croatian history. Home matches are played at the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb, one of the largest stadiums in the nation. The supporters group of the club, the Bad Blue Boys, are one of the most notorious and dangerous supporters groups in all of football. The club contests the Eternal Derby with their bitter rivals Hejduk Split, who are the clear #2 in Croatian football both historically and in the modern era. With more silverware than any other Croatian club (including the only European silverware in Croatia: the 66-67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup), and having spent their entire existence in the top flight in both Yugoslavia and Croatia, Dinamo are a force to be reckoned with. Many of the top Croatian players in the world have played for Dinamo, and Dinamo have a track record of being a tough draw in Europe.

Prva HNL

The top flight of Croatian football, established in 1992 following the breakup of Yugoslavia. For the 2011-2012 seasons the league has 16 teams, however that number will be reduced to 12 for the following year due to restructuring and thus 5 teams will be relgated for this year. The winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League Qualifying Round, while the runner-up and second runner-up qualify for early Qualifying Rounds in the Europa League. Teams play each other twice with 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.

Join us on our Festive Tour where we fly out to Finland and manage FC Santa Claus!

Ho ho ho, merry Christmas everyone and welcome to Finland!

For our FM2012 festive Tour we’ve decided to throw you into the third division of Finnish football where you’ll take over as manager of FC Santa Claus!

Your goal is to take this small club and flourish amid the cruel winter backdrop, rising through the leagues and adding some trophies to the cabinet! One small thing to remember is that this is one of the few times you will hope not to see the words ‘Santa’ and ‘Sack’ in the same sentence. Good luck!

FC Santa Claus

FC Santa Claus (known primarily as Santa) is a football club from Rovaniemi, Finland. The club was formed in 1993 following the amalgamation of Rovaniemen Reipas and Rovaniemen Lappi football clubs. Home matches are played at the Saarenkylän tekonurmi or Susivoudin kenttä in Rovaniemi. FC Santa Claus won its group in the Kakkonen C division, but lost the promotion play-off final to HIFK and failed to gain promotion to the Ykkonen league in 2010.

Santa have never gained promotion to the top two divisions in Finland, spending half their short history in the third and fourth divisions respectively. With low cash reserves, poor facilities and a midtable squad, this could be a tough challenge. However the chance to forge new history and bring a little festive cheer to the world of football is one that shouldn’t be passed up!

Kakkonen C

The name literally means ‘Number Two’ in Finnish and is the third tier of football in the country, behind the Veikkausliiga (Premier) and Ykkonen (First) divisions. The Kakkonen is divided to three groups of 14 clubs. A club plays each of the others in the same group twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents. Clubs gain three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The group winners may win promotion to Ykkönen while three bottom clubs of each group and weakest 11th ranked club will be relegated to Kolmonen.

CHALLENGE DYNAMICS

This challenge will last for three years, upon completing your third season in Finland

(1st November 2014), you can no longer collect points for this destination.

You must start set your manager experience as “Automatic” and play in a new save from June 2011, using this database to unlock the third tier of Finnish football: here (right click to ‘save as’).

You have until the midnight of 30th December 2011 to submit your screenshots in this thread, and accumulate as many points as you can within the confines of a maximum of 3 seasons in the game.

Come join the 2012 Tour as we begin in South Africa with the Orlando Pirates!

fffuuuttt, futttttt, futttt.

Can you please turn that racket down. Racket? Its not a racket, its a vuvuzella the national instrument made famous by our first FMV Tour destination, it is of course.. South Africa. The host of the 2010 world cup event.

Bafana Bafana brought us a bizare atmosphere and culture to the event saw around the globe. With a lot of their stars known around the world after playing in the Barclay’s Premier League including Aaron Mokena, Steven Pienaar and the ever popular Benni McCarthy.

In the inagural FMView tour we are going to look at the South African Premier Soccer League in a more in depth basis.

It’s a pretty normal format in the PSL, with 16 teams playing each other home and away, with the usual 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat the usual scoring used over the 30 games.
The champions of the PSL and the 2nd place team both qualify for the CAF Champions League whilst 3rd place and the Nedbank Cup champions qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup which is the African version of the Uefa Europa League.

Relegation wise, the bottom team is relegated alongside the loser of a relegation playoff between the team in 15th place and the team the advances from the promotion playoffs between the top 2 teams in the Coastal and Inland Stream competitions.

They have a basic rule on foriegners where only 5 non-South Africans can be registered. Nambians born before 1990 do not count.

Cup wise there are two competitions, your Nedbank cup is just your South African version of the F.A Cup and the MTN 8 is the other competition. The MTN 8 imo is a great idea. It’s contested between the top 8 clubs in the division. 8 clubs will play in the a knock out format with each loser getting 800,000 rand, and the winner getting a lucrative 8million rand.

For the tour our chosen team is the Orlando Pirates….. OAR OAR OAR Matey.

The club were founded in 1937 and we’re named the Pirates after the 1940 film “The Sea Hawk”. Orlando became the first club since the beginning of the PSL in 1996 to win the domestic treble of the PSL, Nedbank cup and the MTN 8. They achieved this last season.

Overall the club has 31 honours including 3 PSL’s. The club have also never finished outside the top 8 since the beginning of the PSL.

The club has also had a few “FM” legends over the years, including midfielder’s Teko Modise and Benedict Vilakazi, Defender Mbulelo Mabizela and the champ man legend Sibusiso Zuma.

The club participate in the Soweto derby with the Kaizer Chiefs. Its one of the fiercest derbies in world football and pretty much the only PSL that will attract a full house everytime without fail. This rivalrly was based on Kazier Chiefs being founded by ex Orlando Pirates star Kaizer Motaung. He left Pirates to play in American and upon his return found a lot of internal fighting between the higher ups at Pirates. He formed the Kaizer XI which initally just played friendlies with various clubs and they eventually evolved into Kaizer Chiefs.

*According to wikipedia their overall record stands at Kaizer Chiefs winning 13 games, Orlando Pirates winning 11, whilst there has been 12 draws. Kaizers have outscored there opponents by 34 goals to 33.

They also have a great stadium built for the 2010 World Cup. This high standard of facilities across the country is why there is a lot of hope for the future of South African football – both domestically and on the international stage.

CHALLENGE DYNAMICS

This challenge will last for three years, upon completing your third season in South Africa

An insight into keeping it simple in Football Manager thanks to Tom from FM Pundit.

Football Manager 2011 has left me jaded. With Football Manager 2010 at this point last year I was still sticking many hours in with my Liverpool team figuring out the beauties of the false nine.

Now I start a game, play a few matches and watching my side play some awful football or I scrap through encounters with the opposition and get bored and fed up and stop playing. Many would blame a flawed match engine, it seems a common excuse when it is all going wrong.

But not me, just go to the SI forums, FM Stories websites and you will see that it is more then possible to win games with the right skills. The only person to blame is me. With Football Manager 2012 just round the corner I was looking forward to something new to relight the fire.

But in a matter of days and with a little bit of reading something has changed which has even made me ask for a delay in the release of FM2012.

I discovered a lower league game with Droylsden and with that I also made a major tactical discovery that could change not only my game but the game of every Football Manager player.

Keep it simple. That is all, but how is that going to win you games? Well I have figured out why my teams weren’t winning games. Because I wasn’t doing the basics well.

Since Football Manager 2010 and the introduction of the Tactical Creator my understanding of the game has come on leaps and bounds in a tactical sense. The instructions and roles making more sense to me then setting a slider to 3 but make sure you have a whole system of slider 7′s apart from your defenders.

But with extra knowledge I forgot about the simple things in tactical sense. Get these right and build upon them. Instead I had hundreds of different combinations of instructions and roles trying to put together the most complex system.

But with Droylsden F.C. I have gone back to simple but effective football. Out have gone all the players that aren’t good enough in come in the players that will play the way I want to play. No fancy roles, the wingers bomb on, the forwards score goals and the defenders… well defend. The shape offers an attacking ability while we are defensively sound.

Far too often people are left frustrated, blaming the game for all their woes. All too often this is because the basics aren’t right and like a house of cards, if the foundations aren’t right anything you try building on top of that will just collapse.

So my strategy so far has been to sack anyone that isn’t good enough decide upon a simple game and bring in the players right to play those positions. As of writing I have played 8 games, won 8 games, scored 24 and conceded 2 goals. It is going to be a struggle to move on from this game.

Now that my team are doing the basic right of football right my aim is to build on this, as I go forward to bring in the players that will fit into a slicker system. One that includes more intelligent players and one that will actually work and one that will look to be winning.

Come with us as we bid farwell to FM2011 with our final Tour destination - Argentina! A tango and football hotbed awaits you in Buenos Aires...

Rounding off our FM2011 Tours is a trip to a hotbed of football know as the capital of tango.

A place where you need good footwork on the pitch as well as on the dancefloor.

Welcome to Buenos Aires, Argentina!

Boca Juniors
The club was founded on April 3, 1905 by five Italian immigrants. The club currently has a fierce rivalry with River Plate, who are also from Buenos Aires. Boca are traditionally regarded as the club of Argentina’s working class, in contrast with the supposedly more upper-class base of their cross-town arch rival, and matches between the two clubs are known as the Superclasico – known worldwide for their heated displays both on and off the pitch. Boca’s home stadium is Estadio Alberto J. Armando, which is colloquially known as La Bombonera. The youth academy has produced many Argentine internationals such as Nicolas Burdisso, Carlos Tevez, and Fernando Gago, who have played or are playing for top European clubs.

The original jersey colour was pink, but this was quickly abandoned for thin black-and-white vertical stripes. Legend has it that in 1906, Boca played another team that used this strip to decide who would get to keep it. Boca lost, and decided to adopt the colors of the flag of the first boat to sail into the port at La Boca. This proved to be the 4146 ton freighter “Drottning Sophia”, a Swedish vessel sailing from Copenhagen. As a result, the yellow and blue of the Swedish flag were adopted as the new team colours. The first version had a yellow diagonal band, which was later changed to a horizontal stripe.

The League
The Primera División (English: First Division) is Argentina’s premier football division, sitting at the top of the Argentine football league system. The Primera División was founded in 1893 and turned professional in 1931 when 18 clubs broke away from the amateur leagues to form a professional league. Since then, sixteen clubs have been the Argentine champion, although only four clubs have won ten or more titles. The most successful club are your arch-rivals River Plate, who have won 33 titles to date.

Contested by twenty clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Primera B Nacional. Each season is divided into two tournaments, the Apertura (Opening stage) and Clausura (Closing stage), each with its own champion. In each stage the 20 teams play each other once, and the team with the best record is champion of that stage.

The average records are compared over the year to see who the best four teams are (who qualify for the Copa Libertadores), the fifth placed team (for the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores), and the top six to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana. This aggregate table is also used to determine the two teams with the worst records over the course of the year, who are then relegated.

The match day squad may contain a maximum of four foreign players, with eleven starters and seven named substitutes to pick from. This promotes the development of youngsters in Argentina and ensures they continue to hold their place as one of the most consistent producers of young stars in world football.

The Job
Chairman Jorge Ameal has offered you a chance that comes along but once in a lifetime, to manage the great Boca Juniors! Julio Cesar Falcioni has been dismissed at short notice and you have been chosen to take charge. The fans are notably loud and proud when it comes to their club and you must provide the success they both crave and deserve.

The Staff
Both Javier Sanguinetti and Omar Piccoli are hired at the club as assistants, both are willing to be your number two – however it’s unlikely that both will continue to co-exist so a wise course would be to choose one, or bring in your own man.

There is a wealth of youth coaches at the club which is why they are known for producing such fabulous players. However few of them seem to hold any real coaching skill and this might be an area you need to rebuild. And finishing the tour of the backroom staff you can see that chief scout Ramon Maddoni and head Physio Jose Veiga are good at their jobs but it would be worth your while hiring them some help.

The Players
Known for their all-action 442-Diamond formation, the Blue and Gold’s thrive with a good playmaker in their ranks. Juan Roman Riquelme is that man in the Boca team, capable of stringing together plays that lead to goals every game. Even with an injury to the star man however, Walter Erviti is more than capable of causing problems in this league.

Captaining the side is Martin Palermo, the legendary striker provides a wealth of experience and also still one of the star players – even at 36 years old! Luckily for you there is a young star ready to take Palermo’s place up front by the name of Sergio Araujo, the highly rated striker is just 18 but could develop into a world class player.

It’s also been said that the squad is unbalanced at times by it’s lack of depth at fullback, something the new manager must deal with.

KEY HISTORY

La Bombonera

The Estadio Alberto J. Armando is a stadium located in the La Boca district of Buenos Aires. Widely known as La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box) due to its shape, with a “flat” stand on one side of the pitch and three steep stands round the rest of the stadium. It has a capacity of 49,000 and thanks to it’s unusual shape has excellent acoustics – the Boca support being nicknamed “La Doce” (The 12th man).

Three sides of the Bombonera are made up of traditional stands. However, the fourth side had to be built vertically, with several seating areas stacked one on top of the other, to stay within the stadium’s property. La Bombonera is renowned for vibrating when fans start to jump in rhythm. In particular, the unique vertical side will sway slightly, leading to the phrase ” La Bombonera doesn’t shake: it beats (like a heart).”

It’s also worth noting that the pitch at La Bombonera is the minimum length required under FIFA regulations at just 105m x 68m.
