What type of picture and how you hang it can make or break a room. If you are like me, you notice when pictures are hung uneven and out of level. This can become your focal point every time you enter a room. It also transforms the room from organized and planned to chaotic and thrown together.

The first step is to select the right size picture(s). Do not try putting an over sized picture on a small wall or a small picture on a large wall. If you have a large open wall you can also use numerous pictures to simulate the same ratio as a large picture. Make sure if you do this to balance the grouping and keep the spacing even. Plan out how you want to organize the pictures then use a tape measure and possibly a level to hang the group evenly.

If hanging a large picture above a sofa keep it 6 to 12 inches from the top. If you give too much space between the picture and sofa your eye will be drawn to the wall and not the picture.

Don’t be afraid to go out of the box and use different sized pictures or frames in a group. As long as you creat a even hanging line it will make an amazing look.

Ceilings normally don’t get very much love. If you want to set your room or house apart from the rest, introduce some color to the space above.

If you currently have low ceilings try using your wall color at about half intensity. This will give a more consistent look and help give the impression of higher ceilings. If you want to lower the look of your ceiling try using darker shades, the darker the color the lower it will seem.

To set a section of your home apart and give the space some definite character, use an “off the wall” color like pink or purple. This will give your boring space some much needed life.

Wood flooring comes in many styles, finishes, and density. With so many choices it can become very confusing to choose the right floor for you. Here are some examples to think about when picking a new floor.

Type: Exotic, Solid, Engineered, Pre-finished, Unfinished

Style: Distressed, Hand scraped, Cabin/Country style, Raised grain, Wire scraped

Finish: High shine, Oiled finished, Satin finished, Gloss finished, Matte finished

You also have to consider the density of the wood that will best meet your needs. If you are going to have people walking in shoes, mostly heels than you will want a floor with high density. If your home is going to have light traffic with little dropped objects, than you will be able to use a medium or low density wood. The density rating is based on the Janka system. Woods such as Maple, Cherry, and Oak come in various densities, these can fit any situation. Bamboo is a great renewable product that can very in density, depending on the plant fibers.

The bathroom is usually the last place you think about lighting. Normally you will see bathrooms with one single fixture responsible for the entire space, and it is usually located above the mirror. Although this is an easy method, it can cast shadows on your face while grooming. Try to avoid over head light and use vertical fixtures on both sides of the mirror. They should be mounted at eye level to eliminate shadows under the chin and nose.

In larger bathrooms make sure you use a dedicated light above the shower and tub. This will help keep the space evenly lit and give a warmer experience. Make sure to use glass fixtures as plastic ones will yellow with time.

To bring depth to the space, use a spot light. This will give a great focal point; try it on a piece of art or the vanity.

One great side benefit to better lighting is less cleaning. Mold and mildew grow in dark damp places. With the addition of better lighting and if possible natural light you will spend less time cleaning and more time relaxing.

Carpet is one of the major components in how your home looks and feels. By choosing the right carpet you not only can pull your whole house together, but you will be able to convey to any visitor who you are and how you want your home to feel.

When choosing new carpet for your home you have a lot to consider. The right carpet depends on the purpose you are trying to achieve and where the carpet will be laid. Carpet comes in numerous styles and colors, some of the main styles are Saxony, Berber, Freize, and Cut Pile.

You also have to consider the type of fiber you want to use. Carpet comes in various fibers that are always evolving. The main carpet fibers you will run into are Nylon, Acrylic, Wool, and Polypropylene. The fibers you choose will depend on traffic, the rooms to be installed, pets, and children.

Selecting the right carpet can take days or weeks. We recommend taking several samples home with you. Place them in various spots and lighting to make sure you enjoy it in every situation.

Area rugs have a ton of advantages and very few disadvantages. Besides the basic benefit of being easily changeable and cheaper than other floor coverings, it also allows you to put a splash of style into your room. Rugs come in a far greater color and design platform than normal carpets. They also hold less allergen which will help reduce irritations in the home.

Area rugs are a great way to break up a hard surface room. You will be able to cushion your feet and provide a barrier between you and the cold floor. Also, by introducing fabrics into an another wise hard space you will be able to reduce the sound level and echos being transmitted throughout the room.

Rugs can be made to fit any wear and any shape. Check out the pictures below and see how a rug can really become a focal point of your room and help tie it together. Notice how the rug anchors the seating area and defines the room.

Recycled counter tops have several benefits over stone tops. They are non-porous which means they never have to be sealed. Because of this you never have to worry that a spill left on the surface will soak in and stain the stone. When using these tops you will find that they are very simple to maintain and keep clean; you are also less likely to scratch the surface.

When designing your countertop you also can customize your back splash to match perfectly. Being able to use glass on both surfaces will help maintain cohesiveness and also give you a one of a kind look you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the industry.

Efficiency Inside – Storage options are plentiful to make your space more efficient and functional, ranging from roll-out trays to trash/recycling bins and tiered cutlery racks.

Display Space – Displaying decorative items has become increasingly popular, and manufacturers’ varied options such as open shelving, glass front doors and plate racks, make doing so easy.

Make Appliances Disappear – Appliances may be more intelligent and efficient than ever, but that doesn’t mean they’re grabbing the spotlight in today’s kitchen. Cabinet manufacturers have made it easy to hide appliances behind panels that match adjacent cabinet doors.

Distressed finishes are still popular, particularly when they’re used to add premature age, but today’s look leans more toward worn than crackled.

Decorative Elements – A range of colors and various finishing techniques has made it appear that new and unusual species of wood are taking root in today’s kitchens, but in reality, maple is the No. 1 choice for cabinetry according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. You can dress it up with stainless-steel appliances and dark stone countertops, or make a casual kitchen with white appliances and matching countertops.

Nontraditional Arrangements – Instead of lining up cabinets along the top, bottom, and front face, staggered setups are being used to create more eye movement and intrigue. Bumping base cabinets forward gives that area prominence. Stair-stepping upper cabinets creates the illusion of height, and camouflages awkward or asymmetrical window placements.

The Look of Furniture – Many of today’s kitchens are assigning furniture duties to cabinetry. Some pieces are freestanding, but others simply appear to be.

Embellishments – Add-ons such as crown molding, corbels, and mullioned doors give a standard setup custom appeal. Islands with legs, arched openings and wainscoting achieve a focalpoint status.

Accent Pieces – A cabinet or island in a color or wood that’s different from the rest of the kitchen breaks up the monotony and becomes a pivotal design piece. Today’s most popular example is a colored island surrounded by wood-tone or white cabinets. But it’s also common to see a hutch or one section of cabinetry treated in the same manner.

There are a couple plants that can dramatically improve the oxygen level in your home. The Areca Palm and Mother – in – law’s Tongue both give off high volumes of oxygen. By keeping these plants around the house you can increase your daily level of energy and alertness. It is recommended to have three or four plants per person. This can be a little over whelming for the home, but, by placing a couple plants here and there you will be able to have a well designed area and also receive the benefits that these plants can give.

Several plants can actually increase the quality of your air. They will absorb your air and filter out the harmful VOC’s. Try placing some English Ivy, Asparagus Fern, and/or Purple Heart’s around your home and you will be amazed at how it can help.

These plants all have benefits and can be incorporated into almost any environment. They can give texture to a space as well as show depth in an otherwise flat portion of your room.
