In Boston they're lining the streets to cheer on the participants of the 117th Boston Marathon and singing "Sweet Caroline" over at Fenway during the traditional 11:00 am game. In the rest of the country - the 99% of us who don't get off of work for Patriot's Day - April 15th means it's finally time to get down to business and start those tax returns.

The key to waiting until the last minute to begin your tax return is luck. Hope, prayer, good fortune - whatever you call it - you're going to need a little something extra to get through this. While you're taking a break from your return to "clear your head," why not pick up a little lucky talisman like Bit of Luck Rose Gold Horseshoe Necklace by San Francisco designer Natasha Grasso? 14k rose gold fill is handshaped and hammered into a petite lucky horseshoe and hangs from a sterling silver chain, keeping your good luck close to your heart.

While we can't offer same-day delivery, we can offer you a nice discount on the Bit of Luck Necklace and all of our jewelry this week. Turn your least-favorite initials into 15% savings with the coupon code IRS. And if you're the wait-until-the-last-minute type, the coupon code will be valid until midnight on Friday.

5 Interesting Notes About Birthstones

Now that we've been writing about birthstones for close to a year, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the interesting tidbits we’ve learned.

1) Some believe that the origin of birthstones dates back to the time of Moses when the breastplate of the High Priest was decorated with twelve gemstones to represent the twelve tribes of Israel.

2) The current birthstone list dates from 1912, with only tanzanite (December) added since then.

3) For those lucky enough to be born in April, their birthstone is a diamond. If that’s too lavish, rock crystal or quartz are considered acceptable substitutes.

4) Diamonds are found in ancient volcanic rock called Kimberlite. Most are over 3 billion years old, but a few newbies are only 100 million years old.

5) The largest rough-cut diamond ever found was discovered in 1905 in South Africa. Named the “Cullinan,” it was an amazing 3,106.75 carats and was eventually cut into many gemstones including several of the British Crown Jewels.

No matter what kind of sparkling something you’re looking for, you’re guaranteed to find something you’ll love when you view our birthstone jewelry in our complete jewelry collection.

To celebrate Spring's arrival, this week we're highlighting jewelry inspired by nature. Each of these pieces pays tribute to an element of the natural world, and make an exciting addition to Spring fashions.

Desert Bloom Earrings, $135

Designed and handmade by Los Angeles label Agapantha, these earrings boast a small collection of gemstones, expertly handwrapped in your choice of sterling silver or gold fill. Designer Dani Paquin draws inspiration from the desert origins of her adopted hometown to craft playful accessories.

Blue Topaz Pendant Necklace, $128

Designer Alexa Allamano crafts organic, uniquely elegant pieces for her Seattle-based Foamy Wader line of jewelry. In this pendant necklace watery aquamarine, moss aquamarine, chalcedony, and freshwater pearls find a home that accentuates their natural beauty.

Gemstone Cluster Earrings, $88

The rich, earthy colors of these earrings from San Francisco designer Nell Herbert make for a dramatic look. The champagne mystic quartz briolettes accompanied by clusters of small, faceted prehnite and tourmaline rondelles are married to gold vermeil in an organic-inspired union.

Silver Branches Ring, $139

Seattle designer Lori Linkous Devine uses an intricate soldering and shaping process on interwoven 18 gauge sterling silver wire to craft this organic arrangement of sterling silver "branches" that wrap around and gently enfold the finger. Her lolide line of jewelry fuses the natural with the industrial to create bold yet feminine works of art.

We've all been there. Whether it's scrambling to answer an important phone call, proudly showing off new baby photos or compulsively checking Scramble with Friends to see if it's your turn yet. You reach into your pocket or bag to whip out that smartphone and time slows to crawl as you helplessly watch your phone tumble to the floor, wincing and offering a quick prayer that it lands on its side to deflect the blow. A moment of silence for those fallen touch screens that gave their lives so that we could endlessly text, Tweet and Instagram our own lives. It is a far, far better thing that they do...

The alternative to boosting Apple's share price is protecting your iPhone with a case. And in the cold world of technology, why not opt for some warmth with one of Scabby Robot's handmade leather iPhone cases? Each single piece of leather is handcut and sewn to create these cases. Finished with a corner rivet detail and a raw leather edge, the organic style is a wonderful counterbalance to the sleek lines of the iPhone.

Because we're sympathetic to the afflicted, we're giving away three leather iPhone cases in our latest Facebook contest.
An Interview with Renato Batalla of LthrwD.

Based in San Diego, California, LthrwD is a line of hand-stitched leather goods focused on quality and timeless design.

We recently had a chance to chat with Renato Batalla, the designer behind LthrwD to ask some questions about his line:

F+F: Why did you start LthrwD?

Renato: I started LthrwD as a hobby where I could make leather goods for myself and family and friends. One day, my friend Kris introduced me to Jay Huggins, owner of a local boutique called 5 And A Dime, and they started to carry my products in their shop. Eventually..., I was found by Fog + Foundry!

F+F: Have you always been a creative type? What is the first thing you made that made you say, “Yes, I can really make things!”

Renato: I like to create things with my hands, whether it's leather things or DIY home projects and automotive work. As a kid, I would always draw, so I have a fondness for pencil and paper.

F+F: Does living in San Diego have an impact on your work? If so, how?

Renato: Living in San Diego is awesome for leather working because I can work inside my garage 365 days a year and not freeze my butt off!

F+F: Are you working on anything new that really excites you? Is there anything you can share about it with us?

Renato: As of now, I've kinda taken a small break from making things. It might be a hangover from the holidays, but I will get back into the shop soon! I began making a women's handbag before my "break", and I have a few ideas going through my brain on a new handbag that I'll start working on soon.

F+F: Tell us something that is unique to you and your leather goods that you want people to know about.

Renato: Each piece I make, I give my 100%. I'm always looking to improve the quality of my products through design, craftsmanship, materials, and advice from customers. I try to set a high standard with my work. It sounds very common and should be a standard for makers. Quality > quantity.

Renato’s passion for his work is obvious in the attention to quality and care he puts into each piece. Visit his collection to see all the different styles available.

Drop earrings are a classic style, designed to flatter without the drama of a dangle or chandelier earring. Alexa Allamano is the designer behind Seattle's Foamy Wader and offers a fresh take on the drop earring. We're proud to carry many of her drop earring styles exclusively.

Aquamarine Drop Earrings, $38

The Aquamarine Drop Earrings shine as a testament to the gemstone's promise of calm and protection at sea, as well honoring the brand's aquatic inspiration. Sparkling aquamarine is hand wire-wrapped and hangs from twisted circles beneath a handformed artisan french ear hook.

The teardrop shaped gemstones are said to convey cheerfulness and emotional control

Deep purple orbs are the star of the Amethyst Drop Earrings. A sign of peace and protection - and the February birthstone - amethyst is hand wire-wrapped in the organic-inspired style that is the hallmark of the Foamy Wader line.

Last year we saw some big-name brands dip a toe in the water of American manufacturing. Google produced its Nexus Q home media player at a plant in Silicon Valley and Apple announced a $100 million investment in domestic manufacturing for their desktop computers. Both moves had a whiff of opportunism to them - massive tech brands seizing upon a trend.

In perhaps a more organically-inspired move, 182-year-old outdoor clothing brand Woolrich announced its own commitment to reviving the company's American-made roots. In an open letter from president Nicholas P. Brayton, Woolrich not only broadcasts an intention to re-shoring production of its garments but outlined specific milestones:

Toward this end, Woolrich is setting three significant domestic manufacturing goals for our mill, for our customers, and for our brand.
1. To increase the yardage of wool produced in our woolen mill by 50% in 2013.
2. To introduce a 100% American-made apparel collection in Fall 2013.
3. To increase our American-made product offerings by 2015, ensuring that more than 50% of Woolrich Woolen garments proudly include American-made wool.

We've identified two elements that suggest that Woolrich will succeed with this initiative. The first is their expertise - Woolrich operates the longest continually running mill in the country. They understand the challenges associated with domestic manufacturing as well as any company. The second is the brand's positioning - the Woolrich customer is an ideal audience for American-made products. The garment style, construction quality and brand heritage are integral components of the brand's allure to customers. To the Woolrich customer the domestic provenance is worth more than the price premium.

From the red Buffalo check flannel shirt to Woolly hiking socks, the brand's Americana roots run deep, and customers respond to that narrative. Developing that story also feeds the virtuous cycle of identity and accountability, further strengthening Woolrich's chances for success. We'll be following this story and look forward to learning from Woolrich's experiences.
