I have owned Jollivet for the last 4 years, and found her a great starter boat for the family.

Sadly due to work commitments this year I have hardly used the boat. She is lying in Brighton Marina. The hull and deck are in good condition and would look good on a boat half her age. The gel coat still shines when polished up.

She now needs a new owner to spend a bit of TLC on her before hopping on-board and sail her away to new adventures.

She requires taking out and anti-fouling, which should have been carried out this February, but due to lack of work I could not do this.

If she does not sell by January, my plan is to take her out this winter to anti foul and do the TLC work.

Accommodation
We sat in Candide comparing the layout and gear with Storm Petrel's. I gave Tony a signed copy of The Voyage of Storm Petrel. Tony gave me this month's Practical Boat Owner with an article about Folkboat derivatives which includes the Folkdancer 27. There is a mention of a Folkdancer 27 owner who lives aboard with a little black dog and has sailed to The Gambia. Fame at last :-)

Tony previously had ideas of building a wind vane self-steering device, based on my home-made one (based on the American Autohelm). Now though Tony enjoys a fumctional electric auto-pilot.
Candide has a brand new suit of sails. I am quite jealous because I know a fine set of sails makes a boat almost perfect.
Thoughts on the Folkdancer 27 blog:
It would be nice if other Folkdancer 27 owners could make their own posts and perhaps feel more ownership of the resources here. A Facebook 'Page' would enable this Wiki approach. I'll start one and put an invite in another post here.
Best regards.

I assumed it was somebodys dream that was either abandoned or waiting for "Next year". However the owner said hello as he recognised my boat as a Folkdancer. His boat started out as a Warsash OD hull but someone had taken the moulds and added built up topsides:

The deck is obviously not original - this was highly cambered with glassed in foam ribs underneath. No cockpit as such - just a platform with an upstand round the outside:

Fit out below was to functional home-build standard - a lot more practical than mine:

Apparently built for taking part in Jester events in the early years. Owner plans to enter Jester Azores Challenge next year. In the meantime he's joining the handicap fleet for club racing.

Warsash OD

It seems that a builder took the moulds, added on some more topside and then grafted on a highly cambered deck. There's no real cockpit as such just a platform behind the cabin. Junk rig as well so intended for single handed ocean, Jester type operations. The effect is halfway between my Folkdancer and Roger Taylor's Ming Ming.
I've taken some snaps and will attempt to post them later.

Keeps - Tom Duggan.

I have owner and lived onboard on and off for 4 years now...I have nearly all her history from original bill of sale, architects plans, specification document, signed photo from Beken on her maiden voyage etc etc...I have her out of the water on a nearby farm where I live at the moment...I am to work on her for 2-3 months ready for true live-aboard and put her back in again...She is entirely made from 'The finest Burmese teak' on steamed oak frames, copper fastened with lead keel...she is built like a tank but surprisingly quick under sail...happy doing 6 knots..I have just bought a 079D Taylors heater for her last night but will be a few months before I fit that!

I sailed Storm Petrel single handed from Bristol to the River Gambia in West Africa and back. I re-engined her during this five year voyage, with a brand new Beta Marine 13.5hp diesel (Kubota engine, all parts easily available through industrial/agricultural suppliers at big savings compared to marine suppliers). This ran impeccably from the Canary Islands to Europe and up through the French inland waterways to Calais and then Woodbridge.
I have not used the boat since returning from my voyage and she is in need of work to make her look her best again..

Why Gambia? Because of hippos and crocodiles. Storm Petrel can just be seen in the background anchored in the River Gambia.

Hip op left me non-sailing for most of last year. had some time available this year but only in intervals of a few days. Still it's good to have a potter in between installing new (second hand) winches and getting prop pitch tweaked. After the news of motorboater who set off round Britain by just keeping land on his right but went round Isle of Sheppey instead I had a long weekend free and followed his lead.
Back up the Medway to the holding buoys outside my home mudhole.

Out past Grain Hard at the mouth of the Medway.

Then a good sail round to the East Swale past the seals on the beach

Went through the bridges across to Sheppey

and on with the kettle again. Thames barge heading up river while I was still waiting for the tide to get in

That's about the furthest on my own boat. Howver helped a friend on a delivery from Dover to Plymouth and doing similar from Dover to Lubeck at end of month. Have to wait to August for a lengthier follow my nose excursion on Candide .
Bother...looks like Photobucket pics haven't appeared. Now how did I do it before ? Does straight off the hard-drive work, anybody ?

Teak Hamble One Design

I've changed the name of mine from Dola to Candide. Dola is the Roman name for Deal - I've no connection with the place and it sounds a bit mournful. Candide is a ref to the book by Voltaire - but rather than "cultivating my garden", I'm cultivating my boat, which is all I have. Things have gone much better after name change ! At a price, of course. She crossed the river to Hoo marina to get a new Yanmar installed. That will drop straight onto the old bearers, I thought but no - one was rotten and had to be replaced. If I'd known, would have gone for the Beta. Also splashed out on roller genoa gear and sail from Jekylls. Old gas stove was rusty and no locker so dumped that and one of my new friends at Hoo sold me an Origo for £30. Which leads me to report that we're both much happier at Hoo - some very sociable liveaboards and fellow owners. I lived on Candide from June but had to get off to have a hip replacement operation and stay off for 3 months. Not moved back yet and will probably leave it until late spring as work is 50miles away and it's also pretty uncomfortable. That's enough for now - but would love to hear about others cruises.

"Exocet", Folk Dancer 27 in Belgium - For Sale

"Exocet" has been refitted with teak panels on the coach roof and cockpit lockers, has new headlining in both cabins and is all together very smart, capped off by a lovely name signwritten on the transom with the date 1969.

She has a stepway in the companionway hatch to make a secure seat out of flying spray and from where one could operate the jib sheet winches and the mainsheet tackle.

Then you turn your legs into the cabin and you may just be able to reach the kettle when it boils to pour a cuppa.
Great to hear from you again. Congratulations on getting published! I'm delighted for you. As you know, I appreciate your writing and so would be delighted to read any excerpts you might care to send me - I hope your book will be a great success.

I'm reassured that you at least, understand why I called the boat 'Socca" - most seem to think the name has to do with getting wet. If I had wanted to go that way I think it would have been difficult to surpass Fagan's 'Swirly World'! Hard to beat a name like that for a tiny craft capable of doing the Oz - New Zealand crossing.

I am still at Port la Robine in S. France and have been living aboard since april. Moving down to Agde in two weeks to haul out and antifoul etc. Hoping no dreaded osmosis as she has been sitting in the canal for four years or more. If all turns out to be OK, out into the Med after that.

Bit tricky writing this as wi fi hotspot is outdoors and three kilometres from home and it has just started raining so I will close.

best regards

I have just brought a Folkdancer this year in Poole, and am looking at bringing her back to Brighton on the weekend 28th March 2009.
Would you know anyone who could assist me? Especially who knows the Folkdancer yachts, all expenses covered and good dinner out in ports. Please contact me if there is anyone who fancies a early season weekend trip. Tony with FD27 Dola, in the Medway, has mentioned she has a reverse counter stern and Gary's boat in the video here also has that. It is quite surprising that she is constructed in steel.

Recent email from new owner, Gary: ***I have recently taken ownership of what I believe to be a Folkdancer 27. She's named Norsue V, built for, I believe, Fred Parker in 1967. She's number 44 with a steel hull. I do have a copy of the original Lloyds registration, but it's at home. And she does need a fair bit of work. She's currently on the hard in Maryport***
a part of the history of one boat that is yet to join the list.

The email follows:

Hello,

I have found your website, while I was looking for information about the Folk
Dancer 27.
I have bought one recently, with broken mast. The owner was Irish, and had to
leave the boat in North Spain (Santander) after a Storm, where she lost the
mast. I know that he was planning to go round the world with the boat.

I have not found information about this model and I really would appreciate any
details you could give me.
In special, I would like to know the size of the mast, sails... because I must
put them new and I don't have the original.

Do you know if it is possible to find a new mast for this boat?

The name of the boat is LADY MEG.

I hope you can help me.

Best regards from

"Hi
Have just found your web site.
I've recently purchased a Hamble one design - Spring Fever.
The Hamble one design was a derivitive of the Warsash one design and the
immediate predecessor of the Folkdancer. I believe six were built before the
design evolved into the Folkdancer.

I've attached a couple of photos - the similarity is obvious!
She's now moored on the Helford (Cornwall) - have yet to take any decent photos
afloat!
Happy sailing.
Tony Curchod kindly provided this photograph and the following information about the origins of Folkdancer 27:
In the photo she is being sailed by Fredk Parker
- you can just about distinguish his personal racing flag with the P for Parker. This was the prototype Hamble One Design. My Father owned the prototype HOD1 called Dancer. He bought it off the designer, Fredk Parker of Hamble, when it was one year old. Originally it was designated as the Hamble One Design (HOD).
The rig was originally designed to be a 3/4 rig based on the Folkboat design. But when racing her she did not have the pointing ability and the old mast was thrown away and a masthead rig fitted with a nice huge genoa, from Banks. This totally transormed her ability to point to windward in heavy winds.
The original boat was named Norsue. Fred Parker wanted to keep the name so my Father named her Dancer. When she went into production they took the Folkboat concept, merged it with the name Dancer and created the Folkdancer class.

Tony Curchod sent these two images.
Renamed "Socca" under ownership of John Shirley in France (2009). Photograph copyright by Wakaje, the first website (the website no longer holds photos of Stimulans in the Mediterranean) about another Folkdancer 27 I found
and the photographs of a voyage along the coasts of Italy, France and Spain were a most pleasant discovery. Due to language difficulties I have had no contact with the owners of "Stimulans" Polish Folkdancer 27 FBK20 (sounds like a sail/hull number).

Message from John Shirley about "Socca"
Hi Clarissa
