New hashtag in the ranking: #shoutout

From today, the FollowFriday ranking starts to monitor a new hashtag: #shoutout, apart from the existing hashtags #ff, #followfriday, #cuate, #sigueelviernes and #vivaviernes. We’ve realized that a lot of people are using this hashtag as a way to recommend Twitter profiles.

The chart below -by @trendistic- shows that #shoutout (in yellow) is using for much more users than #followfriday. However, the most popular hashtag for recommending Twitter profiles is #FF!

As you can find out in the ranking rules, we count all tweets sent between Thursday 12:00 GMT and Saturday 12:00 GMT. The #followfriday tradition makes recommendations on Fridays but we needed to extend the period to part of Thursday and Saturday in order to monitor all the countries.

She has been acting for over 15 years: “I've been very fortunate to has a variety of roles in theater, TV and cinema”. Sanaa Lathan (@justsanaa) has just finished a run of a new play by Pulitzer prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, called “By the way, meet Vera Stark”, at Second Stage theater in New York.

Some of her more well-known movies are Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, Alien vs. Predator, Out of time and Something New. “I have a thriller coming out called Contagion, directed by Steven Soderbergh”. Sanaa Lathan is currently the voice of Donna on Fox's animated The Cleveland Show, nominated for an Emmy for the first time this year.

Sanaa told us, in this exclusive interview, that she has visited FollowFriday.com! “It’s fascinating to see how the world has been bit by the tweeting bug. It’s so cool to see what tweeters people are loving and a great place to find new people to follow”.

How and when did you start on Twitter and how many hours a day do you devote to this network?

I started on Twitter a couple of years ago and it took me a while to get used to it. I think I tweeted for a couple of months and the completely stopped for six months and then started up again. I'm a very private person so I had to figure out how I could tweet and maintain that.

What do you share on Twitter?

I tend to re-tweet messages that touch me or tweet things related to work. I'm probably a pretty boring tweeter. But that's the only way I'm comfortable.

We have seen that you interact a lot with your fans on Twitter. Do you enjoy it?

The fans are the best part of Twitter. They are constantly putting a smile on my face. I'm very appreciative of the continual love and support.

You don’t follow to much people on Twitter, so what is your criteria to follow on Twitter? We’d love to hear from you two or three tweeters recommendations.

I don't have a criteria for who I follow. I should probably follow more people. Lately I've been having fun with astrology. @astrologyzone is a good one if you're in to that. And I love @greatestquotes. They always have inspirational quotes that I love.

Ruth Ann Buzzi’s fans have positioned her in the 1st place of the celebs ranking

She is 74-years-old and since almost a year she’s on Twitter. The American comedienne and actress Ruth Ann Buzzi (@ruth_a_buzzi) has been the number 1 in the celebrities FollowFriday ranking, the 2nd globally and in the US ranking.

Ruth doesn't have too much followers or popularity such as others celebs like Lady Gaga (@ladygaga), for example (and she knows this! look at the tweet below), but has conquered an excellent place in the ranking.

Lisa Lampanelli (@lisalampanelli) recognized the merit of Ruth by writing:

Some days ago we added the reviews stars next to each profile in the FollowFriday ranking, with the aim of enriching the profiles of our preferred tweeps. The idea of these comments is that the recommendations #FF don’t get lost in time like tears in the rain.

The #FFtrends June 24

English filmmaker has the world record for the longest time tweeting without sleep

This past weekend the English filmmaker Ad Lane spent 60 hours tweeting live in front of a camera via streaming. The action was part of a campaign that Lane performed with the intention of raising funds to shoot his first film, "Invasion of the not quite dead," thanks to the fan donations.

The filmmaker's followers were quick to recognize his effort and recommended his account @indywoodFILMS using the hashtag #followfriday, positioning it in the number 6 of the global ranking (with 8877 points). The profile has won the 1st place in the UK ranking!

According to Ad Lane’s website, he has the world record for the longest time tweeting without sleep: 86 hours!

Since the beginning of his campaign on Twitter, in 2009, the filmmaker has raised over £40,000, “showing that fans (from 26 different countries) can bring as independent horror movie to life”. Awesome!

With the money, Lane could shoot the first part of "Invasion of the not quite dead" in Bulgaria (watch the teaser below). All FollowFriday team wish to Ad Lane good luck in the second half of the filming!

A non-profit organization launches a contest in YouTube and gets the number one of the global ranking

We don’t know if it is thanks to a video contest via Youtube or if the reason is another, but the thing is that the U.S. organization "Kids are Heroes" is the number one of the FollowFriday.com ranking globally. @kidsareheroes has also achieved the ranking leadership in this country, with 23,078 points.

"The YouTube Challenge" consists in a contest in which the kids have to answer the question: How in my lifetime will I change the world?

“Kids are Heroes” is a non-profit that encourages and inspires children to become leaders through volunteerism and community involvement. On its website you can read:

"Our children are drilling water wells in Africa, helping orphans in India and building houses in Haiti. They recycle waste and care for the cleanliness of their neighborhoods, working with local animal shelters and improving the lives of their neighbors”. AWESOME!

From today when you visit FollowFriday.com you will realize that something is different in the rankings. The reviews are now visible next to each profile and in all listings.

The idea of these comments is that the recommendations #FF don’t get lost in time like tears in the rain. The ranking is updated every week, but the reviews will live on, forever! FollowFriday.com is planning for the future to give weight to the reviews in the global ranking.

Between all of us we can enrich the profiles of our preferred tweeps so that future visitors to these profiles can learn more about what they tweet and how they do it.

Have you ever done a review? It is very simple, you just have to visit a profile on FollowFriday.com and answer the question “Why should I follow @username?”. This functionality should not be used to offend, insult or make destructive comments.

Other novelty is that, apart from the World and the Celebrities rankings, you will quickly see the listings in your country and your language.

From today you will also see that we have added other languages in the rankings by language. Apart from English, Spanish, Japanese, French, Italian and German, you will find listings in Portuguese, Russian and Turkish.

The actor, the number 2 on the Australian ranking, was called anti-Semitic

"Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature?", tweeted last Thursday the Oscar winner. "Is it real that God requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect". After several of his followers tweeted messages of support, the actor reached out to his Jewish friends to encourage them to reject their long tradition of ceremonial circumcision. "I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats, but stop cutting your babies", he wrote.

Early Friday morning, after deleting the tweet, Crowe apologized for offending his followers, telling them: "I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities. I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress. My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. Teenager writes a "bucket list" of things she wants to do before she dies of cancer

Alice Pyne, 15, has been fighting Hodgkin's lymphoma - cancer of the white blood cells - for four years. One week ago she created a blog, where she wrote “I've created a bucket list because there are so many things I still want to do in my life... some are possible, some will remain a dream. My blog is to document this precious time with my family and friends, doing the things I want to do. You only have one life... live it!”.

Este ranking monitoriza tweets de todo o mundo que têm os hashtags: #ff, #followfriday, #cuate, #sigueelviernes, #vivaviernes. Nossa equipe contabiliza os tweets enviados entre às 12 horas GTM da quinta-feira até às 12 horas GTM do sábado. A tradição #followfriday é de fazer recomendações às sextas-feiras, porém o período é ampliado de quinta a sábado para que todos os países sejam monitorizados.

Objetivos das regras: manter a transparência do ranking, assegurando que o mesmo não seja manipulado e que seja um reflexo fiel das recomendações realmente valiosas.

Estas são as regras que garantem a qualidade do ranking followfriday:

Cada recomendação #followfriday terá uma pontuação base que pode variar de 0 a 150 pontos. Esta pontuação será calculada mediante um algoritmo que analisa semanticamente cada tweet, para medir o nível de qualidade da recomendação.
Cada recomendação #followfriday terá sua pontuação base dividida pelo número de usuários recomendados em um mesmo tweet. Se você receber uma recomendação que só faz menção a você e que esteja devidamente justificada, você obterá 150 pontos. Se em um mesmo tweet são mencionados dois usuários, cada um receberá 75 pontos, e assim sucessivamente.
As contas protegidas não serão classificadas. Seus perfis poderão ser vistos, porém não aparecerão no ranking.
Se um mesmo usuário é recomendado vários vezes em uma mesma semana, somente a primeira recomendação será válida.
Os usuários que recomendam mais de 50 contas em uma mesma semana não aparecerão nas listas. Será possível consultar o seu perfil (porém sem informação relativa ao ranking), cujo usuário aparecerá sinalizado como não apto para o nosso ranking.
As auto-recomendações não serão contadas.
Os retwees não serão contados.
Os tweets de agradecimentos não serão contados.
Se detectamos que várias contas colaboram entre si, fazendo publicidade “artificial”, as mesmas serão penalizadas automaticamente.
As listas por países e por idiomas são geradas segundo um algoritmo de geo-localização desenvolvido pela nossa equipe. Bullfighting, bird hunting and other “sports” are pointing out on Twitter

The UK's leading charity campaign to end animal abuse in the name of “sport”, League Against Cruel Sports (@leagueacs), has been the number 6 in the FollowFriday.com global ranking and the second most FollowFriday's accounts in the United Kingdom.

The League was established in 1924 and works to expose and to end the cruelty inflicted on animals for “sport”, like bullfighting, bird hunting for fun etc. “We successfully use lawful investigations, campaigning and lobbying to make a difference in the UK and around the world”, according to the information in its website.

Some practices that can make you become an invalid user for the ranking

Last week we made some updates of the FollowFriday.com ranking rules, to maintain the purity of the ranking and ensure that it is free of manipulation and is a true reflection of those valuable recommendations made.

However, there is another set of criteria that our quality team manually applied which are aimed at eliminating from the ranking those users who tweet in order to receive more recommendations than they would normally deserve.

Below we explain some methods that can make you become an invalid user for the ranking:

One of the rules is about the number of recommendations that a user can make. Each user can make up to 50 recommendations per week. However, there are users who send tweets outside the time stipulated for recommendations to be considered (between Thursday 12:00 GMT and Saturday 12:00 GMT). This practice leads to behavior that is not considered genuine for the ranking.
According to the ranking rules, if our team detects there are a lot of accounts that are working together to promote themselves artificially, they will be banned automatically. Respect to this point, we would like to add that not only users who collaborate with each other can be cancelled, but also those who create multiple accounts to promote one specific profile.
The ranking monitors tweets that include one of these hashtags: #ff, #followfriday, #cuate, #sigueelviernes, #vivaviernes and #shoutout. However, we have identified some people who use different hashtags to make recommendations which are not counted within the maximum of 50. Many users return a recommendation made with a different hashtag by using a monitored hashtag, detracting value from this recommendation.
Include any monitored hashtag in a tweet in which there is no recommendation of anybody also violates the spirit of the ranking which is to be as spontaneous as possible.
Moving from one country to another where there is less "competition" is also considered a practice which is penalised. To avoid confusion, make sure you appear in the correct rankings.
Finally, asking for recommendations via DM or filling your timeline with requests are also considered unfriendly practices in line with the followfriday.com objectives.

These are not the only possible methods of breaking the rules and for this reason any fraudulent attempt to manipulate the ranking will be penalized.

A user from Deutschland has translated the new followfriday.com ranking rules for the German community. We really appreciate what Thomas Piruzgar (@Maven_7) has done, because it has been a volunteer work.

Ranking Regeln (für Teilnehmende am Followfriday.com Verfahren; d.A.)

Dieses Ranking monitort Tweets aus der ganzen Welt, die einen dieser hashtags (Textmarken, d.A.) beinhalten: #ff #followfriday, #cuate, #sigueelviernes, #vivaviernes. Wir zählen alle Tweets, die zwischen Donnerstag und Samstag 12:00 GMT 12:00 GMT geschickt werden (das ist bei uns jeweils 14:00 mitteleuropäische Sommerzeit, d.A.).

Die #followfriday Tradition gibt Empfehlungen an Freitagen aber wir brauchten zusätzliche Zeit, einen Teil des Donnerstags und des Samstages, & haben daher die Spanne verlängert, um alle Länder zu überwachen und dabei die Zeitverschiebung zu berücksichtigen." ...

Hier ist eine Liste von Regeln für Sie, welche die Ranking Qualität garantieren helfen sollen:

Jeder followfriday Tweet ist in der Basisbewertung im Bereich von 0 bis 150 Punkten wert. Diese Punktzahl wird durch einen Algorithmus ermittelt, der die Tweets semantisch (Sprachfeldbezogen, d.A.) analysiert und die Bemessung der Qualität der jeweiligen Empfehlung errechnet und festlegt.
Jede followfriday-Empfehlung ist die berechnete Basisbewertung wert und wird durch die Anzahl der genannten Anwender in eben diesem Tweet geteilt. Wenn Sie also eine followfriday-Empfehlung, die nur Sie in dem jeweiligen Tweet erwähnt und dabei korrekt begründet, warum jemand Ihnen folgen sollte, dann bekommen Sie 150 Punkte. Wenn ein Tweet der gleichen Kategorie jedoch 2 Anwender erwähnt, erhalten Sie jeweils noch 75 Punkte und so weiter.
Wenn Sie die gleiche Person in der gleichen Woche wiederholt empfehlen, wird nur die erste Empfehlung und deren Qualität berücksichtigt werden. (Das bedeutet: Wenn der erste #FF-Tweet eine schlichte Aufzählung mit #FF-Markierung gewesen ist, dann bringt die für die genannten Teilnehmer 0 Punkte. Das bleibt auch so, wenn einer der genannten Teilnehmer hinterher noch eine Einzelempfehlung der höchsten Kategorie erhält, d.A.)
Benutzer, die mehr als 50 Empfehlungen in der gleichen Woche schreiben, werden nicht gewertet. Ihr Profil wird noch gezeigt werden, aber sie werden nicht gezählt werden. (Das bedeutet, dass sowohl ihre Empfehlungen anderer Teilnehmer als auch die bekommenen Empfehlungen aus der Wertung fallen, gelöscht werden und so zwar freundlich gemeint waren, aber trotz ehrlich gemeinter Mühe und Arbeit, den empfohlenen Kontakten nur noch ideelle Unterstützung geben, d.A.)
Geschützte Konten werden nicht gewertet. Ihr Profil wird noch gezeigt, aber sie werden nicht mitgezählt.
Selbst-Empfehlungen werden nicht berücksichtigt.
Retweets (RT) werden nicht berücksichtigt.
Danke Tweets werden nicht berücksichtigt.
Wenn Sie mehrere Konten zusammen führen und empfehlen sich auf einem diese eigenen Konten gegenseitig, dann werden alle Ihnen gehörenden Konten vom Followfriday-Verfahren dauerhaft ausgeschlossen..

An urban legend from Indonesia, the 1st in the followfriday.com worldwide ranking - @poconggg is the account of an Indonesian "ghost" that got the top global followfriday.com ranking! Pocong is a mass phenomenon in this country that has become very popular on social media, especially on Twitter and Facebook. Originally a frightening urban legend about a dead man trapped in their suit (have a look at his Twitter avatar!), this “ghost” is not an object of fear. The profile has been created just “for fun”. The popularity of the “ghost” will probably grow with news on his blog that Pocong will publish a book, and that he will mention his followers names in the book.

Last month the “paranormal” announced on Twitter that he would appear in a shopping mall in South Jakarta, and that people who wanted to be mentioned in his book should come and show their Twitter username on paper. The reaction was amazing! Draw your own conclusions.

The effort of Aiden Grimshaw’s fans - Last year the teenager Aiden Grimshaw was one of the finalists of “The X Factor”, a British television singing competition. His popularity remains high! His fans don’t measure efforts to promote his profile on Twitter: @Mr_Grimshaw has more than 250,000 followers and the account is the number 9 on the celebrities followfriday.com ranking. Congrats!

Barcelona versus Manchester United also on Twitter - Duel final Champions League between Barcelona and Manchester United also had their version on Twitter. The Catalan club won on the followfriday.com ranking too! @FCBarcelona_es is the number 7 on the celebrities ranking, and number 5 in Spain, while Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5), the most popular Marchester’s player on Twitter, is the number 10 on this ranking (and the number 3 in the UK ranking).

Introducing new ranking rules on FollowFriday.com

Today we are releasing a major update of FollowFriday.com. The aim of the new rules is to maintain the purity of the FollowFriday Ranking and ensure that the ranking is free of manipulation and is a true reflection of those valuable recommendations made.

Now, each #followfriday tweet is worth a base score in the range of 0 to 150 points. This score is computed by an algorithm that semantically analyzes the tweet and measures the recommendation quality.

Each #followfriday recommendation is worth the computed base score divided by the number of users recommended in that tweet. So if you receive a #followfriday recommendation which only mentions you in the tweet, and correctly justifies why I should follow you, then you will get 150 points. If the tweet mentions two users you will each receive 75 points, and so on.

Updated rules:

Each #followfriday tweet is worth a base score in the range of 0 to 150 points. This score is computed by an algorithm that semantically analyzes the tweet and measures the recommendation quality.

So if you receive a followfriday recommendation which only mentions you in the tweet, and correctly justifies why I should follow you, then you will get 150 points. If you recommend the same person repeatedly during the same week, only the first recommendation will be taken into account.
Users that make more than 50 recommendations won't be ranked. Their profiles will still be shown but they will not be ranked.

If you have a lot of accounts collaborating and recommending each other to promote their rankings then all of them will be banned.
Country and language rankings are computed based on our automatic geolocalization algorithms, if you want to be sure to appear in the correct rankings then login and edit your profile.
Protected accounts won't be ranked. Their profile will still be shown but they will not be ranked.

All of these rules are applied automatically, but we also have an anti-spam team that continually checks the rankings.

Now you can check if a recommendation #followfriday is valid for the FollowFriday Ranking and how much it is worth for each recommended user, according to the new ranking rules. It is possible thanks to a new functionality that is available today in followfriday.com: the FFValidator, which lies just below the ranking by language. The tool has been created as part of followfriday.com policy to ensure the transparency of the ranking.

To see if the tweet is valid and how many points the recommendation has gotten you need to use the tweet URL. You can click on the time that the tweet was posted to get the URL. To facilitate verification, you can drag "FFValidator Bookmarklet" to your browser's bookmark. You can also press the right mouse button and add the link to your bookmarks.

This is an example of a not valid recommendation for our ranking, because it is a retweet.

The FFValidator always gives an explanation why a recommendation has not been valid. Another example, but now a valid recommendation for the ranking. The two accounts have shared recommended total score tweet.

In the following case, there are six recommended profiles in one tweet, therefore the points are distributed equally to each of them.

The “gleeks” and their #followfriday campaign - The fans of Glee (a musical television series that airs on Fox), commonly referred to as "gleeks", made a kind of campaign via his Twitter account (@UltimateGleeks) to get a good followfriday.com ranking position. The claim was “Win two vip Meet & greet tickets to any #GLEE LIVE tour stop of your choice?”. And to participate the user had to tweet: #FF @UltimateGleeks for the BEST #GLEE News & Giveaways! They did very well! @UltimateGleeks is the number 4 on the global followfriday.com ranking and the number 2 on English ranking.

Twitter suspends 6 e24apps Network applications [updated]

Twitter has restored all the suspended applications. Users can authenticate, make reviews, thanks #followfridays, use FFhelper, etc.

From today, 14 April 2011 at 00:36 (GMT+1), Twitter Inc has suspended without notice 6 e24apps Network applications. We have contact Twitter Inc but there is no answer yet. Meanwhile, these 6 apps don’t work fully: users will be able to access to webs but they won’t be able to authenticate so they won’t be able to send tweets, follow users, create lists, or to use FFhelper and Myff.

The suspended applications are:

e24apps team does not understand this usual practice of Twitter with their ecosystem apps. In the past, e24apps was object of suspension (without notice and warnings too) due to the use of expression “Bulk follow” in some buttons. In this case, Twitter restored the API access when we changed it to the expression “Follow All”. A previous notification would have saved time and problems for Twitter, the users and us. There would have been also less uncertainty for the Twitter developers community which are trying to add value to Twitter network.

So, the access restore depends on Twitter Inc. e24pps will keep all their users up to date.

Finally, Twitter answered us about the apps suspension. Twitter said that they notified us via email two months ago about one of the ads that we display in our network and doesn’t satisfy Twitter Terms Of Service.

However e24apps team didn’t receive any email about the suspension notice and, because of this, we didn’t remove this ad from our network. Now, we have already removed the ad and we are waiting for the apps restoration.

We’ll keep you informed with any news about the restoration.

Taking advantage of the communication with Twitter TOS team, we have verified that our brand new SocialBro app is aligned with the TOS Twitter.

FollowFriday.com releases User Reviews

So far the #followfriday tradition has allowed us to recommend users every Friday. However, these recommendations are lost in time like tears in the rain.

Today we present FollowFriday Reviews which allows your reviews to live on. FollowFriday.com will become a users directory where you can check out a prospective user before following. Between all of us we can enrich the profiles of our preferred tweeps so that future visitors to these profiles can learn more about what they tweet and how they do it.

To make a review is very simple, you only have to visit their profiles on FollowFriday.com and answer the question “Why should I follow @username?”.

This new functionality should not be used to offend, insult or make destructive comments. With the options “Was this review helpful?” you can provide us with feedback about if a review has been useful or not or if it is spam.

2011 is coming so it's time to summarize FollowFriday.com along 2010.
