M. K. on The Typographic Monotony of American Retail

Wow, I can't believe I arrived here so late. But since I'm here...

I think the whole issue as mentioned by several has to do with "familiarity" vs "uniqueness" or "safety" vs "identity."

I think it's a case-by-case situation and we can't really generalize about font usage but it does make me miss spotting a single letter and being able to recognize it.

Today, if we were to greyscale the letters and make something like this with the similar arial/helvetica typefaces, we probably wouldn't be able to tell which brand the letters came from.

I think it's just kinda saddening from an emotional point of view.

Comment by Garrison on The Great Gatsby (2013) Film Promotion

Luca Ionescu recently posted a bunch of cool pictures and information that document his involvment in the The Great Gatsby promotional project over at Behance.

Sketches and unused drafts of the Gatsby identity are also featured.

A sample of his Deco Pinstripe typeface can be found in his post.

He also mentions that Deva Studios is responsible for the 3D rendering of the identity.

Comment by Christy on The Great Gatsby (2013) Film Promotion

HERE ARE THE FACTS ON HOW ITC BAUHAUS CAME TO BE.

I was given the assignment to create two weights of a Bauhaus font for Metrical (A weight loss product.) It was all done under the strict supervision of Helmet Krone, Art director at Doyle, Dane, Bernbach, NYC. We based it on Herbert Bayer's original design. This was all done (BC) before computers. All the copy for the Metrical advertising was set photo composition in Bauhaus at Photo-Lettering, Incorporated. After the Metrical product was discontinued. I was asked by Aaron Burns to create a complete family of ITC Bauhaus. I made many additional drawings and I was working on so many projects that the assignment was given to Victor Caruso to complete.

Don't like the Avant Garde (or is it Century Gothic) on the star-posters. Maybe Futura, Nobel, etc. would have been a better choice…

The movie was originally scheduled to be released in 2012 and the promo material for that release used Deco Pinstripe pretty heavily. When this newest release date came closer, the look of the promo material changed slightly. Now I'm curious which typeface will be used for the title sequence. Thanks Stephen and Florian for hearing me out (even though I possessed out-of-date info)!

Comment by Florian Hardwig on The Great Gatsby (2013) Film Promotion

By the way, Atlas Solid is not an original addition by Harold Lohner. It hearkens back to Capitol, which was designed by Schaefer in 1931 and hence predates its striped sister style Fatima by two years. In France, Capitol was known as Titan.

Comment by Florian Hardwig on The Great Gatsby (2013) Film Promotion

Yes, thank you, Garrison, much appreciated. Sometimes it’s hard to track down designer credits.

Right, I noticed that the lettershapes had been modified. As I wrote in the article, it’s Atlas with less stripes and, for some glyphs, normalized widths. The names on the posters seem to be set in standard Atlas Solid, though.

Comment by Stephen Coles on The Great Gatsby (2013) Film Promotion

Look what I found! This Modern Times Black is from the “Letter-Fan”, a type specimen by Lettergraphics International, Photo Process Lettering Service, ©1969. My copy was distributed by Typographica GmbH [sic], Gesellschaft für Typographie und Reproduktion – Typo-Service · Photosatz · Akzidenzsatz in Kornwestheim, Germany. Price: 25.— DM

I think it is very likely that something like this was the source for Fleckhaus.

Here’s a sample of the neo-Times Roman that was mentioned before by Mark. I found it in the 1978 Headliners catalog:

While we’re at it: I also stumbled upon yet another Times Modern. This namesake has nothing to do with the Times Modern in question. It is actually some version of Trooper Roman:
