While laxatives and diuretics are made by drug companies are sold by prescription only, potent herbal laxatives and diuretics, in the form of slimming teas and weight loss pills, are sold in health stores.

Common herbs used in these imported preparations are the laxatives senna, cascara, buckthron or rhubarb root and the diuretics uva ursi, mallow or licorice root. But nobody really knows the ingredients of the popular Chinese herbal slimming tea sold in the country.

Primary pulmonary hypertension is not the only health risk associated with the use of both Redux and Pondimin. Dexfenfluramine and fenfluramine cause changes in brain cells to occur. There is some controversy as to whether these changes can be defined as brain cell damage. Definite cases of brain damage have been found in laboratory animals given the drugs but not in humans. Dr. George Ricaurte, a neurologist at the John Hopkins School of medicine says that while scientist don’t know whether dexfenfluramine produces the same brain damage in humans, they are concerned that it may.

Lewis Seiden, a neuropharmacologist at the University of Chicago cautions that damaged brain nerve cells may not be apparent for many years. So there is a possibility that the people who are currently taking redux, Adifax may not notice changes in their behavior or functioning till many years from now.

The United States Food and Drug Authority recalled that diet pills Redux and Pendimin because of increasing evidence that they can cause damage to the heart and lungs. The researchers were questioning why the FDA had approved the use of the above mentioned drugs for a year when, in their opinion, there wasn’t enough evidences yet of safe long term use. One scientist went as far as calling the FDA “crazy”.

They predicted an increase in the number of cases of primary pulmonary hypertension of PPh (high blood pressure on the lungs) and heart valve problems. It didn’t take long for their predictions to come true.

There have been reported that Mayo clinic had found evidence of heart disease in 24 women taking either Redux or Pendamin.

The built-in protective mechanism that ensured survival during a famine now works against a woman which she tries to starve herself in a misguided attempt to lose weight. The body cannot tell the difference between famine and a self-imposed “crash diet”. When you go on a starvation diet, biochemical changes are set into motion.

One of the first changes is the activation and multiplication of the fat-storing lipogenic enzymes. Worse, the fat cells become less efficient at losing fat. Some studies have shown that sever dieting can reduce fat-releasing lipolytic enzymes by 50 percent. Most of the weight lost on a crash diet comes from the lean parts of the body such as water and muscle. The haggard faces and soft, flabby bodies of women (men: take not, it can also happen to you, too) who have lost large amounts of weight on starvation diets are the result of this loss of lean body mass.

Moreover, since there is less lean body tissue, the body now burns fewer calories. The weight is regained in the form of more fat. Even though the body eventually recovers the lost lean tissue, the damage (gain in fat weight) has been done.

Liposuction doesn’t mean permanent fat removal in all cases. Some people may get the fat back in the same place or elsewhere, depending on their overall body metabolism. One cannot say, “well, have liposuction and you will not have to worry. You can eat anything you want.” because that is just not true. You do have to modify your diet and watch what you eat because it is entirely possible to get fat again”.

Dr. Rodgers co-authored a study at The University of Colorado that assessed the effects of liposuction in women over a period of time. Her study showed that the localized effects are only maintained for six to twelve months after the operation unless the women practiced proper diet and exercise habits. Some of the women in the study gained the fat back after only three months. The painful truth about liposuction is that you cannot escape from eating properly and exercising regularly to maintain a slim figure, whether you have liposuction or not.

Don’t deny yourself.

Some dieters felt that if you deny yourself from your favorite goodies, you will eventually binge and eat uncontrollably. Their strategies to stay in control include having week-end rewards, allowing yourself one goody per day, and balancing high calorie or high fat food by eating less the next meal or the next day.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Other dieters reported that if they had just one bite of a temptation, they would lose all control. These people removed all junk food and other high calorie items from their homes. If they really wanted something, they would have to go out to buy it, then eat it in public where it is much harder binge. They also used the strategy of lower calorie substitution, for example, an ice sherbet instead of an extra-rich scoop of ice cream.

Lear to cook low calorie meals.

Dieters reported experimenting with their favorite recipes to lower the calories. They did this by substituting high calorie ingredients for lower calorie ones and trimming the fat and oil. This is more realistic than eating bland “diet” food that you dislike.

Dine out, but eat light.

Sharing an order with a friend, using a “doggy-bag”, not ordering appetizers or desserts, eating low calorie meals during the day in anticipation of a dinner at night, are some of the strategies used by most of dieters. They also reported becoming educated about the calorie content of fast food meals so they could make better choices. This is easy to do since most fast-food chains have handouts that detail the nutritional value of item on their menu. All you need to do is ask for them.

Lose weight slowly.

It is very depressing to concentrate on the total amount of weight you have to lose. Instead, focus on one pound at a time. Celebrate each pound that is lost, and set your sights on the next one. Also, have a realistic weight goal. You may never be a “thin” person, but you can be thinner than you are now.

Eat slowly.

This gives your brain and stomach time to decide that you are full. Studies shows that people, who eat fast, eat more.

Delay your gratification.

When a craving comes over you or you want a second serving, wait fifteen to twenty minutes before giving in. Most of the time, you won’t have the craving or the desire for seconds any more.

Don’t Skip meal.

This strategy over-eating at the next meal and uncontrolled snacking in between meals.
