Every restaurant we go to these days seem to be crowded with long lines stretching out from their main entrance. Many don’t take reservations in advance which means that like it or not, we have to walk in and get in line.

Thankfully some restaurants have music piped out to the outdoor area as well which keep us entertained as we mill around outside waiting for a table to be available to us.

I’m glad for these thoughtful restaurants who may have to maybe spend a little on akai apc40 from musicians friend but at least, we as the customer do not have to endure standing in silence. Music lifts the mood and makes the wait seem shorter so it’s all good.

Thankful tastebuds

I’m back from a bridal shower for my niece. I haven’t had a wedding in the family for a while so this was obviously very exciting for everyone. The food, yes, I just have to talk about the food though I probably should admit first off that I’ve never heard of tungsten wedding bands which is what they’ll be exchanging. Pretty cool.

Now back to the food. The caterer is a friend of the bride’s so you can imagine what an amazing spread she prepared. Not your usual fare. This was a special do for a longtime friend and our tastebuds are very thankful right now .

Learning to cook

In the days before I learned to cook, I thought of cooking as an impossible task. I honestly had no idea how to even put together a simple dish. My specialty was boiling water and frying an omelet which was as far as I ever thought I could go.

But when I was faced with the situation of living away from home, I had to learn to cook in a hurry. Well, it was either that or starve. Sure I could’ve eaten out, there are lots of eating places and they don’t necessarily have to be expensive, but some days, I was just so bogged down with work that I really didn’t want to have to deal with going out to eat. I just wanted to go home and kick my shoes off.

I was fortunate I had a roommate who could cook. She would be up at dawn and have something bubbling away on the stove before the sun was even completely up. I learned a few recipes and tricks from her and I slowly got the hang of things. As it turned out, cooking is easier than I’d ever imagined.

Simple meals are the best. Sometimes less is more. These days, I love cooking for my kids. In fact, I love cooking so much I’ve started looking up a list of Culinary Schools in hopes of attending a few classes. I’ve never been to a formal culinary class. Everything I know is from reading and my own cooking experience.

Culinary school sounds like a lot of fun, you know, meeting like-minded individuals and chefs to share knowledge and ideas sounds like an enriching experience. Not that I even dare to imagine myself as a chef by any means but I find the idea of understanding the art and science of cooking rather appealing.

Back when I was a kid, I often looked forward to eating special treats that visiting relatives would bring, especially chocolate. It really didn’t matter what shape or form it was in, as long as it was chocolate.

Still, there was one particular kind of chocolate I found intriguing. It was in the shape of little gold bars. Funny, I know. Who would’ve thought to make chocolate in that shape. But there they were, and times when chocolate treats were rare, I found myself asking my grandmother where to buy gold bars. She was often puzzled and thought I was trying to be funny.

Sometimes it amazes me how the best food can be found in the most unlikely of places. In my previous post, I mentioned we found a new place to eat and we’ve since gone back there twice over 2 weekends.

The strangest thing is that this little restaurant is really (and I mean, really) off the beaten path. It’s nestled in a corner of the city between a store dealing in hydraulic swing clamps and one that specializes in bathroom fittings.

Quite honestly, we would never have found the place if a friend hadn’t recommended it to us. So the moral of the story is that if you’re looking for great food, don’t discount the unlikely spots where you might find an eatery.
