Hi all! Long time no type, right?

How about I make it up to you with some obligatory cute baby photos?  This little guy has been consuming my world so I have a lot of photos to show.

munchkin1

Elliott is so cute and giggly. He loves nothing more than to be cuddled and tickled. He especially loves playing with his papa who regularly does the night time routine of bath, lotion, pajamas, book, before I nurse him and put him to bed.

munchkin2

Munchkin recently sent us some pieces from their *new* line of mbaby clothing.  We have a lot of Munchkin products so I was excited to try out their line of baby apparel.  Elliott is wearing my favorite piece we tried in the photo above.

munchkin3

The pajamas are simple, but well made.

munchkin6

They’re very soft, but stretchy. I love clothes with a bit of a stretch because they can be worn longer as Elliott grows and they’re easier to put on than more rigid clothing.

munchkin4

But one of my favorite parts about these pajamas is you can wear them with footies and without. Elliott wore his with footies while he slept and then when he got up in the morning to play, we rolled them up so he could stand and walk around barefooted.

I can’t believe he is already cruising around while holding onto toys and furniture. Nothing is safe!

munchkin5

The only thing I would change about these pjs is the button you use to secure the pants, once you roll up the footies. I wish it was a snap, rather than a button, only because buttons take a little more time and dexterity. I think a snap would be easier when trying to wrestle the clothes on my little boy.

munchkincollage

Munchkin also sent me two other items of clothing to try from their mbaby line, a button-up long sleeved gray onesie and a simple white onesie.  All are made of the same soft stretchy material and all have cute little details like the two elephants and the crest on the left side of the chest (shown above on the left).

Besides these basics, mbaby has a whole line of clothes for both baby boys and girls, as well as swaddles and burp clothes.  Some of my favorites are the Swimming Fish Collection outfit and the Sleepster in Royal Blue Gingham. The Charming Fairy Sprig Print Bloomer for girls is just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

Want to try the new mbaby line out for yourself? You’re in luck! I have a $25 gift card to giveaway, which you can use toward any Munchkin products, including mbaby.

To enter to win, just go to the mbaby website and tell me your favorite piece by leaving me a comment. I’ll choose a winner Monday morning.

A new client grō (lower case) just held its grand opening. It’s located in Matthews, just beside the Siskey Y. I seriously wish it was closer. I could eat their quinoa bowl with chicken or steak every. single. day.

It’s a Greek restaurant, and it’s sleek, modern, and healthy. They make their own Greek yogurt and I am in love with their PB&J grōgurt.

20140325-220023.jpg

One of my favorite things about nice weather is walking to dinner on a random weekday night.

We put Elliott in his stroller recently and walked to 131 Main where I almost always order their Thai Steak Salad. I love a good cold noodle dish and this is one of my favorites. However, I always forget to order the dressing on the side. They can be a little heavy-handed.

20140325-220049.jpg

I absolutely adore this photo of Elliott and my brother, Wess. We went
to Cabo Fish Taco a few weekends ago to celebrate my sister in-law’s birthday. It’s always so much fun to get together, especially now that babies are in the mix. That’s me in the background of the photo holding my nephew Grayson.

Unfortunately, this little family outing resulted in all of is getting sick with this awful stomach bug that has been going around. Elliott had it for three days and he was so pitiful. Luckily, I felt off all that week but never had a full fledged version of it. I don’t know how a sick mother takes care of a sick baby. Thank goodness, we’re all better now.

20140325-220111.jpg

I went to my first Mardi Gras party a few weekends ago. Festive.

We took the opportunity of a night out to also go to dinner at one of our favorite places, Customshop. All of their pasta is so incredible! This is the butternut squash agnoletti, which is probably the best pasta dish I’ve ever had at Customshop.

20140325-220230.jpg

Something I’ve been meaning to blog about for a while is baby food. Elliott has been eating purées since he was four months old. I absolutely love making his food. It’s so incredibly easy. Pictures above is what I can bananacado — banana and avocado, which is one of his favorites.

20140402-094332.jpg

And finally, last but not least, I am SO excited to be a guest judge at this year’s Charlotte Food Fight.  I covered this event last year as part of the general public, which you can read about here. It was so much fun! The food trucks were incredibly generous with their portions, so you really get your money’s worth.  Plus, proceeds go to benefit Relay for Life and who doesn’t want to eat for a good cause?

You can buy tickets here.

If you come out for the event, please come by and say hello.  I’ll be the short girl with her mouth full.

Apple galette — the finished product

I had  such  a great time at this cooking class! I’ve actually taken very few cooking classes so I feel like any I take in the future has a lot to live up to.

The things I loved most about this class:

  • The class is very social — you have ample opportunity to talk with your three  partners.
  • The class is very hands-on — you and your partners make everything.
  • Chef Alyssa is a great teacher and is very approachable.
  • You get to make and enjoy a complete meal.
  • They send you home with leftovers if any are left (I enjoyed apple galette for breakfast the next day).

Other items of note:

  • I went by myself, but this is perfect for a group of four people or a couple who doesn’t mind socializing with new people.
  • Chef Alyssa explains why she is doing certain things so you’ll learn a lot.
  • At least at this class, the cooking techniques were not overly complicated, but the dishes were very elegant.
  • You will be sent home with a spiral bound notebook with detailed recipes and instructions from the evening.
  • These classes are currently held on Wednesday evening and take a few hours (have a snack before you go).

This cooking class was exactly what I think a cooking class should be — fun, social, instructive, hands-on, and not overly complicated.

Thanks so much Chef Alyssa for inviting me to experience your cooking class! I hope to go back again soon!

< 6 months on Valentine’s day – I mustache you to be mine

< 6 months

I’ve been so busy lately, I somehow put off posting about Elliott’s 5th month until it was time to post about his 6th month! So I decided to combine them.

Elliott has changed SO much in the past two months and he has been tough to figure out during this time.  I’ve felt disheartened sometimes because what works one day, won’t work the next day.  It’s been important for me to remind myself and hear other people say that every baby is different and some just take more time to develop a napping schedule.

But no matter what, I count myself so lucky, because Elliott is so incredibly sweet.  He’s animated, talkative, very loving, incredibly bright, and his smile just lights up a room.

Sleeping
He went from napping pretty well once I put him on a schedule around 3 months to not napping at all once he hit 17 months.  At one point he was only waking up once a night (around 3 am).  But then he gradually woke up more and more, so that after 2-3 hours of sleeping, he would get up every hour or so all throughout the night.  It was rough, let me tell ya. Some babies just naturally sleep through the night at some point.  Not my baby. I had to teach him. And even now, he’s only sleeping through the night according to the technical definition (5-6 hours).

Two good friends, one of which doesn’t even live on this coast, coached me through the trials and tribulations of teaching my baby to sleep. God bless them. Every mother needs someone to help them through this. I needed someone to console me, coach me, and talk me down from ledges. And thank goodness, I have a wonderful support system that helped me through this.

Brad and I ended up sleep training Elliott both at night and napping.  I had him napping pretty well and then when we started sleep training at night, his naps got all screwed up.  Now, he’s doing pretty well.  Although I’m completely superstitious to say that because I feel like every time I feel like I’ve got things figured out, Elliott changes the game on me.

He isn’t sleeping through the night.  I told myself that I would continue to feed him once a night, so if he wakes up 3 am or later, I nurse him back to sleep. He still wakes up sometimes before then (like as I’m writing this post at night), but he falls back to sleep in 5 minutes or less.  And usually it’s much much less. He fell back to sleep before I could finish this paragraph.

Development
Elliott flipped over back to front a week before he turned 4 months, then flipped over back to front the day he turned 5 months.  In the past few weeks he has been flipping over to his belly to play with toys and in the past month he actually has started sleeping on his belly. I’ve even caught him on his tip toes, butt in the air, in somewhat of a downward dog position, which I’ve never seen him do, but that once instance. He was very mad because I had put him down for a nap that he didn’t want to take. Otherwise, he flips over to play, and then five minutes later, he either flips back to his back or whines until I flip him over.

Everyone always remarks how happy and talkative he is. He jibber jabbers all the time and giggles with the cutest little laugh, especially if you kiss and blow on his belly.  I swear he said “daddy” the other day, but we’re calling Brad “papa” so it was definitely a coincidence.  Now, if I could only get him to say “mama”…

Elliott stays in the sitting up position, for short periods of time and especially if his focus is on something in front of him.  But we’re not quite there yet.  I can’t leave him sitting up without some type of support like the Boppy. I like to sit him up against the ottoman in his nursery on the floor but I have to keep an eye on him and my hands ready to grab him, or he’ll fall over when I least expect it.

And boy is my baby busy! Notice that for his six month photo, the “6 Months” is all but rubbed off the chalk board?  Someone had a little trouble keeping his hands to himself.  You should try eating with him on your lap.

Around the time Elliott turned 5 months, we put him in his walker.  That was the first time he was able to reach the ground with his feet when the walker was on the lowest setting.  It only took a little coaxing from me for him to figure out that he could propel himself forward by kicking his feet back and forth.  He’s doing so much better today! He can turn and even get himself around barriers.  His steering is much improved.

Eating
Besides actually birthing Elliott, I’m secondly most proud of getting him off of formula completely.  I attribute this to four things:
1) As Elliott has gotten stronger, he’s been able to stimulate my milk supply more and more, increasing my supply,
2) the week where I pumped after every single feeding during the day
3) he’s eating real food twice a day now, and
4) sleep training means I don’t need to feed him all throughout the night, so I get up every night at 1 am and pump, so now I have a freezer stash

Now about the real food…
I started Elliott on homemade baby food at four months.  That definitely was not my original plan, but when it came down to real food versus formula, I would just rather give him real food.  So I replaced supplemental formula feedings with real food, which at that time was only once a day.  I completely skipped the rice cereal, opting instead for sweet potatoes, avocados, peas, apples, and bananas during months four and five.

Now that’s he’s 6 months, we’re doing more foods, some of which include oatmeal (baby cereal), brown rice, green beans, peaches, butternut squash, yogurt, blueberries, apples (all pureed).  I’m going to introduce meat very soon as well.

At first he ate really well,  As long as I put a little fruit on the spoon (or sweet potato) along with the vegetable, he would eat very well. But in the past week or so, he only wants to eat bananas, which I always blend with avocado. So I’ve been blending banana or pairing banana with everything. I hope this is just a phase.

Teething
Just as I suspected, Elliott is teething early (Brad and I both teethed early).  The week before he turned 6 months, he got his first tooth.  He wasn’t super fussy and didn’t run a fever so we didn’t even notice it until low and behold, it was there. But the second tooth has been a doozy. Three days ago, he was super fussy and ran a low grade temperature, which we treated with Baby Motrin, Baby Orajel, extra nursing, teething rings, and lots of love. Yesterday was pretty much the same.

Today he was much happier,  I can feel his second tooth about to break through, but who knows when it’s going to actually come in. Teething sucks, ya’ll.  And I’m kind of (actually really) afraid of his upper teeth.  In my experience, teething on the bottom doesn’t really affect breastfeeding since his tongue goes over his teeth when he latches and sucks.  But I’ve heard upper teeth are a different story. Ouch.

Challenging as it is sometimes, I absolutely love being a mother.  Nothing makes me smile bigger, laugh more, or feel so grateful to be me than my sweet little man. He’s my heart and soul.

I wore this chunky sweater + copper skinny jeans + boots combo for lunch out with Elliott and a friend. When I first bought this rust…copper…cinnamon (?) colored jeans from the clearance rack at Banana, I wondered how much wear I would get out of them. But surprisingly, they go with a lot of stuff in my closet. They look great with navy, cream, black, chambray, and even light gray. It’s kind if a neutral but it’s quirky enough that it needs a neutral to even it out a bit.

20140123-113854.jpg

But do you know whose outfit I really like? Elliott’s!

How cute is this plaid fleece vest?

And what a ham? While snapping his photo, this huge grin spread across his face. Ooh! I could just eat him up!

Last Friday night, I met Chef Tom LaFauci who develops all the recipes for Salsarita’s.  All of them! By the way, did you know that Salsaritas is a local Charlotte company? The first one was at Eastland Mall.

Chef Tom and I talked about Salsarita’s guacamole and pico de gallo and I got to help him make up a batch of both (recipes at the end).  The recipes are incredibly simple, which is what I like best about Tex Mex food when I cook it at home.  It’s nothing fancy and what makes it delicious are simple flavors that always taste fantastic together.

I’ve never thought to use a potato masher when making guac.  What a great idea!

IMG_1186

This kid was enthralled with Chef Tom, even though he said he didn’t like guacamole.  He was mesmerized by the demonstration.  I think we have the beginnings of a young chef!

IMG_1188

IMG_1197

IMG_1198

The recipes for both the guac and pico de gallo are very similar and of course, I ate my fair share while I was there.  I could literally eat this entire bowl of guac in one sitting.  The guac is basically the same recipe as the pico, except for the addition of avocado and garlic. Salsarita’s recipe for guacamole is actually really similar to my own.

Chef Tom has one of the coolest jobs around.  I think it would be so fun to be a recipe developer.  He actually tests all of his new recipes in the Charlotte market, so we get to try out his ideas before he sends out the successful ones to the other Salsaritas all over the country.

We also talked about how he tries to get local produce to use in his kitchen as much as possible when they’re available.

IMG_1201

These babies were definitely the high point of the night.  Chef Tom told me about how he wanted to make churros, but that would require a completely different deep frier since they use their frier to make their chips. Instead, he came up with Poquitos, which are little balls of dough that are baked — not fried — and covered in cinnamon and sugar.  So you get the flavor of the churro, but in a soft baked dough ball.

Oh man these were good.  Next time, I have to get the recipe for these!

IMG_1204

By the end of our cooking demo, I was ready for dinner and ordered a salad with grilled chicken.  I was very happy to learn that guac comes with ALL of the meals at Salsaritas, which is something I usually have to pay extra for at every other Tex Mex restaurant.

I left with a big container of guacamole, which didn’t make it 24 hours in my house.

Thank you, Chef Tom, for such a fun experience!

Salsarita’s Guacamole

4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Salsarita’s Pico de Gallo

Equipment Needed:
Cutting Board
Chef’s Knife
Mixing Bowl

Kosher Salt, to taste

1. Place all ingredients into the mixing bowl.

Elliott’s first plane ride was a great success! We flew to DC a couple of weekends ago to attend a belated holiday party for Brad’s work.

I attribute the successful flight to:

* Nursing E during takeoff and landing (and in reality practically the whole flight ).
* The fact that E loves to sleep on me.
* Our upgrade to first class which meant more privacy and room (a perk from having a husband who flies all the time).
* Just having the luck to have a good baby.

20140120-222704.jpg

Dress: White House Black Market // Shoes: Nine West // Clutch: Nordstrom consigned via Threadflip

Here’s the dress I wore to the party that I mentioned in this post.

I actually ended up choosing the third clutch that no one picked as their favorite when I asked for y’all’s opinion. However, what I failed to mention was that it was a “better” brand (IMO) than the other clutches. Also, the owner knocked $10 off her asking price which helped make my decision a lot easier. The clutch is also a lot prettier in person. Too bad I didn’t get a better shot of it.

The party was fun, but after being up since 5:30 that morning with E, I was beat by 10:30 pm. I definitely can’t hang like I used to.

20140120-223146.jpg

I was super rushed to get ready and get downstairs to the hotel lobby to meet friends before the shuttle took us to the party, but we managed to snap this photo before heading out for the night.

Brad’s parents went to DC with us to watch Elliott while we went to the party. It made me feel so much better knowing he was with them at our hotel. I’m just not ready to leave him overnight just yet.

The next day we switched hotel rooms to be in downtown DC. While I would love to say that we did a lot of sight seeing, we mainly slept and ate the next day and a half. I feel like I perpetually walk around with just a little less sleep than I need and it was too tempting to have my in-laws there who would love nothing more than to take E back to their room for playtime. So I saw a lot of the bed at The Mayflower Renaissance and it was glorious.

One of the best things I ate in DC was a tartine from Le Pain Quotidien, which I was surprised to find is actually a chain. A tartine is an open faced sandwich. Mine was topped with pear, prosciutto, and “farm cheese” which I’m pretty sure was Marscapone. Delicious! Now how do we get this chain to set up shop in Charlotte? The closest one is Cornelius.

Proof. I ordered the Warm Chocolate Hazelnut Cake which was yummy and decadent but would have been a lot better if it had actually been warm. I also would have loved it it had an oozy chocolate center. I could definitely get behind that!

It was really nice to get out of town for the weekend. What made this trip possible was Brad’s parents graciously agreeing to go with us to babysit Elliott. My little guy is so lucky to be so loved by both sides of his family and I couldn’t ask for better in-laws.

Elliott was recently sent the First Play Mega Pack from CP (Constructive Playthings) Toys . This set comes with a colorful play mat with varying textures (and built-in mirror), with mini barbells, peek-a-boo roller, and plush ball that jingles when shook. Technically, this toy is for 6 months+, but even though Elliott is almost five months, he has gotten a lot of use out of these toys.  It’s really a great toy that grows with your infant.  Here’s what I love about it at his current age:

  • That mat is perfect for tummy time.
Friends have recommended putting a mirror under Elliott to help him like tummy time more and this mat has one already built-in.
  • The mat has lots of different colors and textures and babies that are Elliott’s age are really into various textures.
  • The peek-a-boo roller has flaps (the star, moon, and sun flaps shown above) that crinkle when he touches them.
He’s really into crinkle sounds and other things that make sounds so he loves feeling these flaps.
  • The fact that this toy will be usable for months!
So many toys for babies are good for only a small window of time, but the toys that come with this set will keep him busy for months.

I was quite tickled by the baby barbells when this toy arrived in the mail. I did my best Arnold Schwarzenegger impression and told Elliott, “I’m going to pump you up.” haha.

Another thing that Elliott really likes is that the peek-a-boo roller has a mirror and vibrates when you pull one of the rings on the end.  He’s not strong enough to pull the ring yet, but he really likes things that vibrate, so I pull it for him and touch it to his face.

Most importantly, this toy is currently $30 off.  It’s typically $79.99, but is only $49.99 right now.

I really love this toy. I am a big believer in independent play in order for babies to develop skills on their own and this toy is perfect for that. With so many different tactile sensations, it’s wonderful for encouraging sensory awareness. I can’t wait to see what Elliott is doing with this set a month from now!
