In the competitive field of food provisioning businesses, restaurant and food store owners know that an alternative is just a click away, so every little tilt of the public opinion expressed in the reviews and ratings could encourage the next restaurant patron to chose their establishment instead of a competitor’s.

Some exalt themselves by anonymously posting laudatory reviews on their own restaurant food pages. Some others have even resorted to offering a refund to diners in exchange for a positive write-up on sites like foodpages.ca. There are even some who post negative reviews on competitor’s sites. And so on..

As the collective wisdom of the crowd displaces traditional advertising, restaurant review sites are being loaded with favorable/unfavorable reviews to reach certain goals.

Fake reviews are the greatest threat to foodpages.ca goals and vision. So we are deploying the latest technological advances to catch the culprits.

As of February 2012, foodpages.ca is deploying the most advanced review monitoring service, which has during our test phase been shown to have a very high success rate in identifying fake reviews due to a number of signals present in both the content and the technical aspects of the review submission process.

A mathematical model to systematically unmask bogus endorsements has been in development for over a year, and now it has finally reached the necessary maturity as a system that will be deployed in the field.

This only goes to show that we take the quality of the review content on our pages very seriously, and will continue to do so.

If you feel that your review of a particular establishment gets unfairly filtered in the process, let us know. We can’t build the best guide to restaurants and food stores in Canada without your help.

In 2007 several people became seriously ill from eating illegally imported pufferfish that had been mislabeled as monkfish. From the article: “David Schindel, a Smithsonian Institution paleontologist and executive secretary of the Washington-based Consortium for the Barcode of Life, said he has started discussions with the restaurant industry and seafood suppliers about utilizing the technology as a means of certifying the authenticity of delicacies. ‘When they sell something that’s really expensive, they want the consumer to believe that they’re getting what they’re paying for,’ Schindel told The Associated Press.”

We still get angry restaurant owners threatening foodpages.ca and the people who write reviews on the site over negative reviews.

here is the latest such incident: http://bistrorestaurantbar.foodpages.ca/?review=175698

Dear foodpages.ca I posted a review about Ruby Moon in thunder bay. The owner threatening to sue me for defimation if I do not remove it. There is no way for me to remove it. Will you please remove this post ASAP, please. Thanks. Hog 2011-06-05 16:42:00 The food we ordered was made incorrectly. I returned it and another was brought to the table. It was STILL wrong. It said there would be sun-dried tomatoes and roasted zucchini in my wrap. There were no tomatoes and the zucchini was raw – who eats zucchini raw?! I brought it to the attention of the staff and the plate a quickly removed from my hands and I was rudely told they will not be making me a replacement or anything else. I was left sitting there lunch-less and in shock at the abrupt rudeness! It was a HORRIBLE experience. My lunch hour break was ruined and I left hungry. Worst customer service I have even experienced in my life.

A few things worth noting here:

All reviews on foodpages.ca are anonymous. There is no way to personally identify a reviewer

All reviews on foodpages.ca are protected under the free speech act. While we do moderate the review content for poor taste in choice of words, we have no intention of moderating criticism

We have a right to be critical of eating establishments we patronize. Some of us are opinionated, otherwise we would not write reviews. And when we do, we are fully within our rights to do so.

In closing, FoodPages will neither bow to pressure nor sell out like some other review sites to sing only praises to businesses that pay. The only thing that makes our site stand appart from the rest is our impartiality.

Keep on reviewing, its a free world!

Same as locating the two animals mentioned in the title of this post, it is sometimes hard to find the best place to dine.

The reason is simple. The current jungle of review sites, blogs and recommendation engines is mind boggling. There are sites out there which cross back and forth between objectivity and subjectivity, others who write their own reviews, others who get paid for the types of reviews they post, others who simply grab and post random reviews taken from other sites and so on..

In the garden of FoodPages you will not just find a review or a recommendation, but a good feel of the place you are thinking of visiting. In many cases on foodpages you will also find menus, pictures, notices, specials, coupons and much more for you to review before you make up your mind. Our moto is “Better information is the key to eating better.” and we follow this moto in anything we do with the foodpages portal.

As to the puzzle we left for you to solve… here is a hint.

The bird you must be looking for in the painting, looks a little bit like this:

As to the cat… oh well..

Think about where a cat would usually sit in a garden like this.
