Hiking is a passion for many people but there some foot care tips which must be followed while you go out for hiking. In the article below we will discuss some of the hiking tips.

Hiking Tips for Hikers: Some of the hiking tips for hikers are:

Make sure that you wear proper boots so that they are comfortable and have less friction.

Usually, the exact location of the friction points is either the ball of the big toe or the heel. So it advisable to apply a plaster or Vaseline as a preventive measure before you start hiking.

In case a pressure is felt at time of hiking, then it is advisable to stop and apply a blister pack or a plaster at once on the affected part. This will prevent the blister from becoming painful and eruption as well.

Select a right pair of boots for hiking. It is advisable to select boots having some flexibility and a stiff shank at the toes. In order to test this, it is advisable to hold the heel of the boot and keep the toe of the boot on the floor. Holding the heel, press down the boot. In case the boot collapses on itself then it is too flexible and it will not support your feet. Select the boot which bends only in the toe area.

Make sure that the boots you select are stable and they retain their shape without collapsing. In case they are not bending at all then they are too rigid and can cause blisters. On the hand, on pressing the heel counter if it collapses then it is too flexible. The same thing is applied to a pair of boots. Make sure that the counters of heel must not be flexible but they should be supportive.

Most hiking shoes and boots are designed for people who suffer from the condition of over pronation. Pronation of feet is the condition in which rolling in of the feet takes place. Excessive pronation of feet will result in several types of foot problems. But at the same time it is not necessary that the feet of everyone pronates. There are many individuals who have supinated feet or very stable feet that means there is no abnormality in motion.

In case you are using custom orthotics or do not over pronate then it is advisable not to use a pair of hiking shoes or boots to control pronation. This is because this will shift the weight of the body outside which will result in pain on the outer side and pain will be there on the calves and blisters which are located on the outer side of the foot.

If you are going for moderate to long hikes then it is advisable to wear a pair of cotton socks which are capable of absorbing moisture and do not allow it to evaporate. It is the tendency of the cotton socks that when they become wet, they lose their elasticity and shape. This property of the cotton socks increases rubbing and friction on the skin which in turn causes irritation. This results in the formation of blisters on the skin. So wearing of the cotton socks not only prevents ingrown toenails, blisters, bruising, heel bursitis and fungal infections.

It is advisable to use arch supports before going for hiking. The use of arch supports will elevate your boots and prevents your arches from soring. It would be good if you will use a rigid arch supports as flexible one will only cushion the boots but are not capable of preventing your arches from soring.

Blister formation is very common during hiking, so it is advisable to wear hiking shoes correctly. Formation of blisters commonly takes places either on the heels or in between the toes. This happens because the hiking boots are not worn correctly. Moreover if you are wearing cotton socks in this situation then they will absorb the moisture and deform easily resulting in the formation of blister. In case you are prone to the formation of blisters on the heels then it is advisable to apply moleskin directly on the heel before you start your hiking. Use of duct tape or sports tape will also be helpful.

It is advisable to prevent corns and calluses which are developed as a result of friction from the shoes on the foot. Corns usually develop on the top of the toes and in between the toes. Whereas, callus are formed either at the bottom or on the sides of the heels and toes. In case you are having a mild callus then it is not necessary to treat them especially if they not painful. But if callus is painful then it requires treatment. In order to treat the corn and callus it is necessary to find out the reason why are they formed, usually abnormal motion of the feet and ill-fitting shoes are main reasons for their formation. A pumice stone can be regularly used from keeping them down or callus reducing cream will also be helpful in serving the purpose.

Ankle sprain is also a common condition which can be caused at the time of hiking. Therefore it is advisable to use a shoegear to prevent ankle sprains. Walking shoes, running shoes and sports sandals may not have enough space to support the ankle and prevent them from ankle sprains. There can be many trails while hiking where you will come across rocks and uneven surfaces. While hiking on such rocky and uneven terrains the chances of ankle sprain increases. In case you are prone to ankle sprains then it is advisable to wear an ankle lace up brace while biking.

It is very important to keep your hiking socks dry as the buildup of heat and moisture inside the socks will invite bacterial infection which could be the main cause of Athlete’s foot. So in order to keep the feet free from fungal infection, follow the below given tips:

Make sure that the space in between the toes is clean and dry

Application of talcum powder must be there before and after the hiking. This will help in keeping the feet dry and smooth.

Those who suffer from overlapping toes should be very careful. In case formation of sore is noticed, then it is advisable to apply antibacterial cream like Lamisil which will prevent the formation of cracks. Thus, ceasing the home of secondary infections.

It is advisable to change your socks in the middle of hiking. This will help in reducing the heat and sweat. A small flannel can be used which can be used to keep the space in between the toes dry.

It is advisable to remove both the socks and the shoes at the time of lunch break while hiking. This will help in give your feet a chance to get some air and cool down.

It would be good if you will air your hiking boots at night by keeping them in a cool space. Select a place which is properly ventilated also ensure that your boot not damp enough for the next day.

It is advisable to keep your toenails short and trimmed. Make sure that the toenails re trimmed straight across the nail and not rounded round the corners or trimmed too short. The big toe nail is more likely to transform into an in-grown toenail so it is advisable to leave an extra bit of the nail on the outer corner to prevent this.

Make sure that you file your nails to remove the rough edges that could get inside the socks and rip the nail. It happens because long toenails cause pressure on the nail bed which could cause pain and discomfort at the time of hiking.

It is also advisable to carry extra pair of socks which can changes in the middle of hiking, blister packs which can be used in case any pressure point develop during hiking.

Foot analysis is the process in which customer uses any one of the three devices which are used for measuring topography and pressure points of the foot. This analysis of the foot helps the operator to get a better understanding of the foot structure. Foot analysis along with the visual analysis and verbal information helps the podiatrist in understanding the abnormality and provides an insight of what kind of footwear must be used by them.

Importance of Foot Analysis:

Foot analysis is helpful in selecting the right size of shoes and preparing right kind of shoe inserts to get comfortable and best fit shoes. The process of foot analysis is performed by the certified podiatrists who are capable of modifying shoes and inserts to get the perfect support and fitting for your shoes. This process is available in various stores of athletic footwear and on specially designed stores of foot care.

There are some other stores and hospitals also where the equipment which analyses the foot are available. In some place simple systems are available which simply scan the foot and recommend the product, such machines are not customized.

Types of Equipment’s Used to Perform Foot Analysis:

There are primarily two pieces of equipment which include: Arm fit and Digital Analysis Scanner.

The arm fit creates a structural analysis of the foot and maps out its curves in tenths of a millimeter. The Digital Analysis Scanner or DAS machine produces a pressure study along with the gait analysis. Both the parts of equipment provide podiatrist a clear picture of both the functioning of the foot along with the areas receiving maximum pressure.

It takes just 15 minutes of time for each customer to undertake the machine testing of their foot; however it might take a longer time in analyzing and understanding the findings of the analysis which is carried and make recommendations accordingly.

The report carries information which helps the podiatrist to illustrate the problematic areas of the foot. This helps the podiatrist to follow the best approach to reduce and eliminate the discomfort present in the foot of the customer.

The process of foot analysis is free of cost at foot solutions stores. This is because the process is insured so an insurer gets free service. Similarly the shoes or customized inserts are also covered up in many insurance policies.

The custom inserts and shoes for diabetics are also covered in the insurance policy so they also have not to pay anything.

Benefits of Foot Analysis:

As the service of foot analysis is free so it can be used by anyone who is suffering foot pain. The initial screening of the foot will be in the particular areas of friction and abnormal pressure which are the part of the problem. There is no obligation of purchasing the objects being sold out there.
Foot analysis is a wonderful procedure for solving your concerns and problems related to foot. It is an easy and cost effective measure for providing a solution to your foot pain.

A dislocated toe is different from a broken or sprained toe. A dislocated toe can be placed back in its place easily without extending the recovery period, but the fact is that many of the symptoms of the broken toe are similar to a sprained or broken toe. The treatment for dislocated toes does not take much time to heal and gives immediate results.

The pain in the toe joint which is caused due to dislocation is mostly due to the direct or indirect impact caused to the injured part, but the injury is commonly caused due to toe sprain. A dislocated toe is the condition in which the bones are out of place and appear misaligned. The condition of toe dislocation is commonly experienced by the athletes where the original injury is often accompanied by the toe ligament tears or injuries.

The presence of toe pain must be treated as soon as possible; similarly the dislocation of the toe must be treated quickly after any injury as the resetting of the toe joint becomes easy. But in case an injured toe has not received any serious treatment even after the six hours of the injury, then it is advisable to wait for the professional help so that resetting can be carried properly.

Causes of Dislocated Toe:

The condition of dislocated toe can be caused due to both the minor and major injuries. The activities like walking on even terrain, pressurizing or overloading one part of the foot or any kind of direct trauma to the toe can result in a toe injury. The condition of dislocation in the foot is caused when the bone slips out of place or even the foot slips out of place or rolls out the foot putting unnatural stress on some part of the toe resulting in dislocation.

Toe injuries mostly dislocations are very common in sports like hockey, soccer, rugby and football, especially turf toe, in which playing on hard surface puts excessive strain on the toe. Toe pain will be there which will increase on changing the direction or stopping and starting the toe functioning on regularly. The smaller toes are at a greater risk of dislocation as compared to big toes because they are more likely to face more serious injuries.

Symptoms of Dislocated Toe: Some of the symptoms of dislocated toe are:

Intense pain will be there in the dislocated toe especially while trying to move the injured part to pressurize the area of the toe.

Bruising and swelling will be there and tenderness will be there in the entire affected part along with the difficulty in walking.

It is advisable to remove the shoes and the socks in order to prevent the unnecessary pain in the toe and also prevent the toe from additional injury.

Deformity will be noticed in the toe visibly and sometimes it can be clearly noticed that the toe is out of place.

Sometimes even the bones of the toes appear misaligned or out of place.

Toe paralysis or numbness will be there in case the nerves or blood vessels are pressed or being pinched.

In case any abnormal movement is noticed in the toe or inability is felt in the movement of the toe, then it could be an indication of the complications of the dislocated toe.

Any kind of harm or injury to the toenail, toes or foot could result in additional risks. Whenever a trauma is caused to the toe, check around carefully around the injured part, if there are some other injuries which could be the cause of the toe injury pain.

Tips to Treat a Dislocated Toe: The treatment of the dislocated toe can be divided into:

Home Treatment

Medical Treatment

Exercises for dislocated toe

Home Treatment Methods for Dislocated Toe: Some of the methods of home treatment are:
The treatment of dislocated can be easily carried at home within six hours after the injury is caused. After this time frame it is not advisable to attempt the self-adjustment of the dislocated toe as it could enhance the harm which is already done. This is because the tissues within the toe start losing their elasticity after the injury is caused to them.
Crookedness will be noticed in the knuckle or the joint area of the injured toe, then there is a possibility to correct the dislocation yourself. In case you want to adjust the dislocated toe then it is advisable to pull it gently away from the foot. In this way you will be realigning the toe and allowing it to get back in its original position. This procedure is quiet painful and must be carried out quickly in one swift move, this will minimize the damage or reduce toe pain.

Give Proper Rest to the Dislocated Toe:In case the dislocated toe remains straight then it is advisable to adjust it with the help of tape and a thin piece of cotton or fabric in between the injured toe and the tape on the toe. Make sure that the tape is not very tightly tied to prevent the circulation or enhance the pain in the toe after the tape is tightly placed.

Apply RICE Treatment: The RICE treatment includes:

Rest: It is advisable to give your dislocated toe proper rest. Avoid walking, any kind of movement especially the movement along with heavy weight. Try to spend least time on your foot, especially when you have adjusted your foot yourself. So it is better to avoid unnecessary stress on your foot to prevent any further injuries on your already injured foot.

Ice: Application of ice packs on the injured part before and after the aligning of the dislocated foot will help in reducing the swelling and bruising from the affected part. Make sure that the application of the ice must not be done directly on the skin rather place the cubes of ice in a plastic bag or in a piece of cloth and then apply it on the affected part. This application will help in reducing the inflammation and swelling on the affected part but make sure that you do not numb the area or enhance the complications of the injured part. The application of ice must be carried out to contract the blood vessels and restrict the circulation of blood gently to the affected part. This will help in reducing pain and later encourage nutrients to the affected part as the vessels will dilate after the removal of the ice. The application of the ice must be carried out for twenty minutes at an interval of 2-3 hours in the initial days of the incident.

Compression: A medical band can be wrapped and pressure can be applied to the injured toe joint. This will help in reducing the swelling and limiting the movement. This will also prevent the involuntary movement of the toes and allow compression which will enhance the recovery of the dislocated toe. Make sure that the compression of the toe will prevent swelling but in case of the delay in healing process, it will limit the supply of the blood as well.

Elevation: The placement of the injured toes at a higher position will help in reducing the swelling and encourage the supply of blood to the elevated part. In case elevation of the injured part is limiting the movement of the injured area then it is advisable to reduce the elevation and focus on early healing.

Medical Treatment for Dislocated Toe:
It is advisable to seek immediate medical aid in case you are not able to straighten the dislocated toe. Consult the podiatrist who will analyze the position of the injured toe joint and will prescribe medication, special foot protection. In case the dislocation is severe then he will ask you to undertake X-rays, MRI scan etc. to determine the trauma.

Dislocated Toe Exercises: Here are a few exercises which can be carried out to bring back the dislocated toe to its original position. They are:

Vertical Toe Raise: Place the hands in between two solid positions at the level of your waist so as to support and carefully lower the weight towards the injured foot. Now press the feet into the ground in such a way that the injured is raised away from the point till the position of the pain. Stay in this position for some time giving adequate support to the body with the help of your hands and then slowly return back to the original position. You can carry out this exercise 10-12 times in one repetition. Try to do it 2-3 times in a day for better results.

Horizontal Toe Press: In this exercise injured foot is pressed against the wall with the tip of the toes just touching the wall. In order to carry out this exercise injured leg is placed behind the body and hands are placed on the wall for support. Now very carefully try to level the toes on the wall and then apply pressure downwards restricting the toe till the point of the pain. Remain in the position for a few seconds and then slowly return back to your original position. This exercise can be repeated 12 times and can be carried out 2-3 times in a day.

Vertical Toe Press: In this exercise, placement of the hands must be done on two solid objects at the level of the waist. Now curl the toe in backward direction and press it in the ground till the point of pain is felt. Hold the position for a few seconds and then leave to return back to your original position. This exercise can be repeated 12 times in one sitting and 2-3 times in a day.

Prevention of Dislocated Toe:

It is very important to prevent your injured toe from any further injury. For this purpose it is important that you consult your podiatrist from time to time and in case of severe discomfort even after realignment contact him immediately.

While you are about to resume your normal activities, sports etc. make sure that you are cautious enough while carrying them out. Avoid putting excessive stress suddenly, slowly and gradually bring back your dislocated toe to its normal routine.

Toe gout is the condition which affects the feet commonly and is recognized due to the repeated inflammation in the toe tendon. The most commonly affected areas from this condition are the joint located at the base of the big toe also known as Podraga. Gout actually refers to toe arthritis and it typically affects only one joint in a person but repeatedly.

Causes of Toe Gout:

Inflammation is the main reason for this condition which is caused due to the presence of extreme high levels of uric acid which is being circulated in the body. This uric acid crystallizes and settles in the joints, tendons and tissues. It is for the same reason not only the toes but hips and knees where accumulation of crystals takes place are often affected by the condition of gout.

Thus, the condition of gout due to the presence of excess of uric acid is not been eliminated from the system. This surplus amount of uric acid gets accumulated in the synovial fluid which surrounds the joints and cause inflammation.

The exact reason for this condition is not very much clear but there is a view that the condition is hereditary so if any person in the family suffers from this condition so there are chances for the next generation also to suffer from this condition as well. Moreover men are more likely to suffer from this condition as compared to women.

Apart from this, studies have found a close association of the condition of gout with eating too much meat, alcohol, and fructose or sea food.

People suffering from the conditions of cancer, diabetes, kidney and blood diseases are more likely to suffer from this condition.

Symptoms of Toe Gout:

Toe will become sensitive and tender to any kind of movement

Patient suffering from gout will be fatigued or suffer from low temperature

Excessive pain will be there which will lasts for hours in a day

Treatment of Toe Gout:

The intake of these medicines must be carried out till the time the pain subsides. In case excessive pain is there then the intake of stronger pain killers like oxycodone or codeine can be carried out. In order to reduce inflammation intake of medicine like colchicine can be taken. Steroids can be injected to reduce pain in the joints of the toe.

Alternative Methods to Reduce Gout in Big Toe:

Foot cramps are painful and disruptive conditions which appear at the time of sleeping or exercising. The treatment of this condition varies depending on the cause which resulted in foot cramps. Stretching exercises are performed to reduce pain and also prevent any further foot cramps.

Causes of Foot Cramps:

Some of the causes of foot cramps are:

Excessive body weight or obesity

Electrolyte or mineral deficiencies

Poor circulation of blood

Excessive consumption of alcohol

Muscle fatigue

Improper footwear

Dehydration

Holding the foot for a long time in one position

Sometimes some serious conditions like compression of nerve in the leg or spine can result in cramping of the foot.

Sometimes poor circulation of blood or blockage in the flow of blood can result in cramping of the foot. This happens due to the inadequate supply of oxygen to the feet which results in foot cramping.

Sometimes the deficiency of the minerals which are responsible for the muscle relaxation like potassium, calcium and magnesium can also result in foot cramps.

The deficiency of important electrolyte sodium can also result in foot cramp.

Treatment of Foot Cramps:

Some of the treatment methods of foot cramps are:

Gently massage your leg to relax the muscles which will prevent cramping of the legs.

Application of the warm towel packs on the affected part must be carried out to relax muscles and reduce cramping.

Try to walk on affected leg to ensure stretching of the tensed muscles.

Sometimes cramping can be caused due to the deficiency of the vitamins and calcium, so it is advisable to take in foods rich in vitamin and calcium. This will help in reducing the amount of cramping in the leg.

Intake of water in sufficient amount is very important to keep the body hydrated. This is because dehydration of the body can also result in foot cramps.

Wear the footwear of proper fitting; make sure that the toes have excessive space to move around in the toe box. This will prevent your foot from foot cramps.

Stretching Exercises for Foot Cramps:

Some of the stretching exercises for foot cramps are:

Foot Bend and Foot Pointer:

These two exercises help in lengthening and stretching of the soft tissues present at the top and at the bottom of the foot respectively. In order to carry out the foot bend, the steps are:

Remain seated with the legs crossed

Keep the affected leg at the top

Now, using your hands try to pull back on your toes gently

In case you are not able to reach your feet, use a resistance band or a towel

In the same position foot pointer exercise is carried out

For foot pointer, instead of pushing your feet in forward or downward direction, just hold the stretch for a few seconds

This exercise can be performed three times in a day

Stretching of the Transverse Arch:

Transverse arch is present along the ball of the foot. The stretching the muscles which support this arch help in reducing cramping. The steps of the stretching of the transverse arch are:

Remain in seated position with crossed legs and affected foot on the top

Now hold your foot on either side in such a way that the fingers are placed over the ball of the foot

Now using both your hands, push either down or forward on your foot, so as to uncover the knuckles of the toes

Now pull back and repeat the exercise. The exercise can be repeated 5-10 times in a day initially and when the foot gains strength the number of repetitions can be increased.

Stretching of the Calf Muscles:

The stretching of the calf muscles helps in strengthening them, as they can pull upon Achilles tendon and plantar fascia and result in foot cramps. The steps for the strengthening of the calf muscles are:

Stand in a lunge position and lean forward keeping the back of heel on the floor

The stretch can be felt in the calves of the back leg

The stretch can be felt in the calves if you will stretch your legs straight in the seated position

You can pull your feet straight with the help of a towel or resistance band, try to hold the stretch for a few seconds and then leave to repeat

You can perform 3-5 repetitions of this exercise in a day

Precautions which must be taken while carrying out the Stretching Exercise: Some of the precautions which must be taken care of while carrying out the stretching exercise are:

In case you are suffering from severe foot cramps then static stretching exercises can be very uncomfortable. So it is advisable to carry out toe curls and ankle circles which are active stretches rather than performing an exercise which require holding the position for a long time.

Depending upon the cause of injury application of heat and ice packs can be applied along with the stretching exercises.

Although the purpose of stretching exercise is to relax and soothe the muscles but it requires some effort to keep the muscles in stretched position. In such a case muscles struck in contracted position and result in muscle cramp.

Twisted ankle is the condition in which stretching or rupturing of the ligament which connects the bone, is caused due to over stress. The condition of twisted ankle is known as inversion injury in which inward twist or an outward twist is caused.
In order to cure the twisted ankle, the severity of the ankle injury is judged. There three stages in any ankle sprain:

If the sprain is of the first stage then it will result in mild pain, bruising, slight swelling, stretching in the ligaments and instability in the joints along with the trouble in running.

If the strain is of the second stage then it will result in partial rupture in the ligament, moderate pain, bruising and swelling in the ankle and difficulty will be there while walking due to the slight instability in the joint.

If the strain will be of the third stage then it will result in severe swelling, pain, loss of motion, bruising, complete instability will be there which will make walking impossible. This happens due to the complete rupturing of the ligament of the feet.

Causes of Twisted Ankle:

There are causes for the twisted ankle to occur. Some of the causes of twisted ankle to appear include:

Participating in activities like sports

Wearing improper footwear

Running or walking on uneven surfaces

Presence of weak ankles

Excessive stretching of the ligament

Some sudden, unusual forceful movement which could result in twisting of the ankle

Tripping on a stone or while stepping on a tree root, any imbalance could result in twisting of the ankle.

Walking on uneven sideways, rugs, clustered stairs, meeting with an accident could result in twisting of the ankle

Symptoms of Twisted Ankle:

Some of the symptoms of twisted ankle are:

In normal cases there will be inflammation, stiffness and pain in the joint, bruising will be there and difficulty in walking will also be there.

In severe condition all the above mentioned symptoms will highly intensified. Thus the intensity of the symptoms will help in recognizing the degree of the twisting of the ankle.

Tips to Cure the Twisted Ankle:

Some of the tips to cure the twisted ankle are:

RICE is an effective method which is used for curing the twisted ankle. The time taken for the healing of the twisted ankle depends on the severity of the injury but usually it takes a few weeks to a few months for the twisted ankle to heal completely. In RICE therapy:

R stands for proper rest which is helpful in reducing pain and preventing the effected part from any further injury.

I stand for application of ice on the affected part which helps in reducing the swelling and pain from the affected part.

C stands for compression therapy which is again helpful in reducing the swelling from the affected part.

E stands for elevation in which the affected part is kept at an elevated position to ensure that the affected part is supplied with blood and oxygen in sufficient amount.

The above mentioned RICE therapy is helpful in treating moderate conditions of sprain within a few weeks’ time. This therapy if accompanied with stretching exercises also enhances the process of healing and reduces the time span of recovery too.

But in severe condition when the sprain or twisting is of third degree, could take a lot of time in healing. Some of the conditions even require a surgery also to back in original position.

The physiotherapy methods are very beneficial in treating this condition as they play a vital role in bringing back the movement, strengthening the muscles, improving the balance and returning back the routine and rigorous activities.

Use of elastic sleeves which function as inner soles can also be done. These help in stabilizing both the ankle and foot.

Sometimes formation of small lumps takes place in the ligaments of the ankle which cause resistance for the joints and also causes inflammation which could cause permanent damage too. Such conditions can be treated with the help of corticosteroid injection which helps in reducing the inflammation and reduces pain as well.

Tips to Prevent Twisted Ankle:

Some of the tips to prevent twisted ankle are:

Avoid wearing shoes with high heels or those which do not fit in properly.

Avoid improper walking styles and the use of orthotics which could cause injury.

Proper stretching and warm up exercises must be carried out as they keep the muscles and bones flexible and free.

Proprioception exercises must be carried out to avoid sports injury and enhance the process of recovery too. Proprioception comes from the nerves which are located in the body; these can be trained to acquire the skills of balancing thus decreasing the risks of falling and preventing injuries.

The condition of twisted ankle will appear a minor injury but if it is ignored it can transform into a crucial injury. So treat it immediately before it transforms into a major condition. Prevention of the injury is the best way, so it is advisable to wear shoes which provide proper support to your ankle. Warm up exercises must be performed regularly to strengthen the loose bones and avoid walking on wet and uneven grounds.

Strengthening Exercises for A Twisted Ankle:

Some of the strengthening exercises for a twisted ankle are:

Alphabet Letters:

The stretching exercises help in stabilizing the ankle. In order to carry out this exercise, sit straight on the chair or on the floor and stretch your injured foot out. Now, considering the big toe as a pencil, try to write the alphabets and letters on the floor. You can perform 3-5 repetitions of this exercise initially and increase them after your injured foot gains some strength.

Stand on One Foot:

This exercise must be performed when the muscles around your lower leg and ankle have gained some strength and your injured ankle is not paining much. In order to carry out this exercise, hold the wall or some other immovable object. Now stand on the leg which is uninjured, maintaining some distance from the immovable object. Now try to shift the weight of the body from the uninjured leg to the injured leg. Try to hold the position if your injured leg is able to tolerate the weight of your body otherwise return back to your original position at once. Repeat the process again, slowly your injured leg will gain strength and will start bearing the weight, then you can hold the position for some time. You can continue these exercises even after your ankle is healed as they provide strength to the ankle and lower leg.

Contents

0.1 All Season Waterproof Socks:

0.2 Over the Calf Waterproof Socks:

0.3 Water Blocker Submersible Waterproof Socks:

0.4 Chill Broker Socks:

0.5 Importance of Waterproof Socks:

1 More From footcare_ygoy

2 footcare_ygoy Recommends

There are a number of sweat glands on the human foot. Most of these glands produce sweat which transforms into vapor and evaporates in the air, generating a cooling effect for the feet.

The problem here is caused due to the reason that people do not spend most of the day barefoot, as the result the natural process of evaporation and cooling is compromised. Moreover, the socks which are made up of breathable material like cotton act as a wick, which draws away the maximum moisture from the foot. This accumulation of moisture takes place inside the shoes, thus resulting in a damp foot which is surrounded by a damp sock.

Thus, this problem is solved by the waterproof socks. Here are some types of waterproof socks available in the market. They are:

All Season Waterproof Socks:

These socks are made up of DuPont nylon, moister vapor and Cool Max transpiration membrane. The fabric used for making these socks is waterproof, comfortable and breathable. These socks are very good for your damp areas or for a sandal sock. These are available only in black color and keep your toes dry.

Over the Calf Waterproof Socks:

These socks are used for severely wet conditions. These socks are 15 inches high and have an advanced water protection layer. These socks are made up of strong patented fabric and have three layered membrane which is capable of allowing the perspiration to evaporate but prevents water from going out. The outer most layer of this socks is abrasion resistant made up of Lycra or nylon for durability and also prevents from sliding down and losing its shape.

Water Blocker Submersible Waterproof Socks:

These socks are able to block the water completely and prevent it from entering the top of the socks even at the time of passing through deep ““water. These socks are made up of permeable breathable fabric which evaporates perspiration and allows the socks to breath. Actually the socks have the in-cuff design which prevents the water from entering while the inner membrane is breathable fabric which allows the feet to breathe. The seamless design of the socks provides flexibility and prevents the formation of blisters and chafing even after the rigorous activity by the feet for long hours.

Chill Broker Socks:

These socks are made up of an insulated layer which keeps the feet ultra- dry and ultra-warm. The outer layer of the socks is made up of nylon, lycra which offer flexibility, durability and stretch covering. In between the two layers of fabric a waterproof layer of MVT membrane is present. Thus, making the socks warm, soft, comfortable and stretch to fit.

Importance of Waterproof Socks:

Some of the points about the importance of waterproof socks are:

The fabric of regular socks makes them wet which in turn rub against the surface of the foot causing abrasions. These abrasions later transform into blisters. The crease of the socks can make the condition worse. All these problems are easily solved by wearing waterproof socks.

The waterproof socks are three layered. The innermost layer is made up of the absorbing material which is breathable too like wool or acrylic blend.

The second layer is plastic laminate having small pores attached on both the inner and outer layers. These pores evaporate the sweat outside but prevent the outside water from entering.

The outermost layer of these socks is made up of Lycra or Spandex. This material is similar to rubber or plastic which could not allow the water to enter but allow the sweat to evaporate.

Thus waterproof socks acts as a balance by allowing both the sweat and moisture to evaporate as part of natural evaporation. It also prevents the accumulation of sweat which in turn prevents the formation of blisters too.

<img src="http://footcare.ygoy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/nerve-damage-in-foot-2-1.gif" alt="nerve-damage-in-foot" title="nerve-damage-in-foot" width="275" height="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-3001"style="float:right;margin-left:5px;" />
The condition of nerve damage on foot is also known as Neuropathy. The term neuropathy is made up of two different words “œneuro”which means the nerve and the second word “œpathy”which means indicating disease. In the condition of Peripheral neuropathy the nerves located on the outer side of the central nervous system, mostly those present in the legs and arms are involved.

Nerves are the lines of communication of the body through which electrical signals send from the brain travels. These electric signals carry instructions from the brain to various parts of the body. On the other hand, body collects information from its surroundings through senses and sends it back to the brain through the nerves.

The sensations of feel like pain, touch and temperature are felt due to the peripheral nerves present in the body. There are millions of nerve endings which are present in the hands, fingers, feet and toes which are designed to prevent the person from danger and keep them away from the things which are cold, hot, sharp etc.

The nerves present in the feet and hands are helpful in controlling the number of small muscles and carry out complicated movements in these parts of the body. For example, it would be difficult to walk if you do not know where your feet are standing or how can one pick things up if he had no idea about how hard is it gripped.

The cells of peripheral nerve can be divided into three main parts:

Cell body

Axons

Dendrites or terminal

The condition of nerve damage or neuropathy occurs when the outer protective covering or sheath (also known as myelin) of the nerve cells degenerate. In the absence of this protective sheath the electrical signals cannot be transferred properly.

In case the condition of nerve damage worsens, the nerves either start sending fabricated signals (i.e. tingling and pain) or lose their ability to transmit signals (i.e. numbness in the affected part).

In case the signals are not to flow through the nerve and the affected part is not able to receive messages then it results in numbness. So in the condition of Neuropathy, the nerves have excessive damage and there is noticeable pain, numbness or tingling.

Causes of Nerve Damage:

Mostly diabetics suffer from this condition and it is the major complication associated with this condition. This condition is caused due to the presence of higher levels of sugar in the body of the diabetic. There are some other reasons also which can be responsible for this condition to arise. They are:

Intake of alcohol

Autoimmune disorders

Metabolic disorder or Amyloidosis

The presence of the condition of cancer

Various treatment methods of cancer

Bell’s palsy

Treatment of Chemotherapy

The presence of the condition of Carpal tunnel syndrome

Charco Marie-Tooth disease

Chronic failure of kidney

Compression neuropathy

Intake of foods which are toxic

The presence of the conditions of Diabetic mellitus, herniated disc

Failure of liver

The presence of infectious disease like leprosy, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B

Treatment through radiation

Radiculopathy

Undertaking surgeries which could damage a nerve

Vitamin deficiencies like anemia, pernicious

Copper deficiency induced by Zinc

Reasons of Nerve Damage:

The process of nerve damage starts when the nerves do not get oxygen in sufficient amount or the process of anoxia is there. Apart from this, there are several other reasons too. They are:

The presence of too much of insulin or sugar in the blood

The presence of nutritional deficiencies

Intake of too many medicines

Introduction to toxic substances through drugs, food, chemicals, pollution or water

Through radiation therapy and chemotherapy which a means of cancer treatment

Physical injuries or trauma caused to the nerve

To lie in one position for a long time as it could result in entrapment, compression of the nerve

Due to some injury which is caused at the time of surgery

The presence of infections which could block oxygen which is received by the nerve cells

Compression can be caused to wearing of the inappropriate footwear for a long time

Sometimes too many free radicals, present in the blood, could attach oxygen to them, making it unavailable for the cells. The other times, inflammation present in the area of sciatic nerve or lower back of the buttocks could also block the flow of blood, thus preventing the cells from getting blood.

Intake of medicines like statins which is meant for reducing cholesterol could also destroy myelin sheath. This happens because most part of the myelin sheath is made up of

Similarly intake of medication of high blood pressure could also destroy nerves by reducing the flow of blood in outer extremities like hands or feet.

Symptoms of Nerve Damage:

The symptoms of nerve damage depend on the type of sensory, motor or autonomic and the extent up to which they are damaged. Some of the symptoms of nerve damage include:

Tingling, numbness and pricking sensations, sensitivity can be felt in touch or muscle weakness. This could cause numbness in the fingers and tingling and pain in the left arm

Burning pain can be felt especially at night, shooting pain, paralysis, muscle wasting, disfunctioning of the organ or gland. This happens due to the damage caused to the motor nerves which in turn affect the muscles and effect their control and coordination.

As nerve damage can be caused in any part of the body, this condition could cause nerve pain and mild symptoms initially, which could go unnoticed in the beginning.

Tingling or pain, numbness can be there in the ankles, feet or legs, after several years which could result in burning feet or weakness in muscles of the feet.

Diabetic neuropathy is the condition in which appears suddenly and affects specific nerves in affected individual, which could result in drooping eyelids or double vision, or atrophy and weakness of the thigh muscles.

Nerve damage which is caused due to diabetes after many years could result in problems related to the sexual organs and digestive tract, which in turn could cause diarrhea or constipation, indigestion, bladder infection, dizziness and impotence.

As the treatment of chemotherapy could result in neuropathy as side effect, so the presence of this condition could result in lack of coordination, as the motor nerves are affected and could even cause chemo-brain due to nerve damage.

The loss of sensation in the feet will there which in turn increase the chances of foot injuries. The formation of lesions or ulcers on such foot can become infected and could result in trouble with coordination.

Treatment of Nerve Damage:

Some of the treatment methods for nerve damage include:

Intake of Medications:

Some medicines like Lyrica and Cymbalta act as pain killers. Lyrica is an anti-seizure medication which prevents the nerves from talking with each other. It is the same reason that the pain is not felt. But the intake of this medication for a long time carries side effects. Similarly, another medicine called Cymbalta is taken which is an anti-depressant is used to lower the awareness of the person about pain.

Rebuilders:

Footbath can be taken along with the electric current. This will help in opening up of the nerve channels and stimulate the circulation of blood to the affected part. Application of the alpha-lipoic acid (an anti-oxidant) can be done to protect the nerves and prevent the body from any further damage. This application will reduce the symptoms but will not repair the nerves.

The use of Glutamine & B6:

The use of these two vitamins is supposed to reduce the symptoms caused due to chemo induced nerve damage symptoms. But these seem to stimulate the growth of tumor in the body.

Anodyne Therapy:

The application of infrared light tends to enhance the circulation of blood and stimulates the production of nitric acid. This also relaxes the arteries and eliminates free radicals. Pads are placed all over the injured part. This is supposed to reduce pain and increase the circulation of blood and nitric oxide in the blood.

Natural Treatment for Neuropathy:

As most of the above mentioned treatment methods carry some side effects, so here are some of the natural methods which could be followed to get effective results without any side effects.

Intake of Thiamine or Vitamin B1: It has been noticed that the increased levels of Thiamine or Vitamin B1 in the stream of blood is very effective in reversing and reducing the effect of neuropathy. It is required by the body to heal the damage of nerve. But as the oral intake of Vitamin B1 is not possible because the intake of Thiamine above 5 mg reduces its availability in the body for use and it is flushed out of the body immediately through urine. It is for the same reasons it injected directly into the blood stream at an interval of few days. It has to be taken at regular intervals because Thiamine is water soluble and cannot be stored in the body and is flushed out after 4-5 hours of it being taken.

Intake of Vitamin B12: The intake of Vitamin B12 supports the covering of the nerve cells and protects them. Moreover, studies have also proved that its presence in the blood promotes the growth and regeneration of the nerve cells too. It is for the same reason that its intake in good amount is very helpful in reducing the condition of nerve damage. Unlike Vitamin B1, Vitamin B12 can be stored in the body as it is not readily absorbed by the body. There are many supplements of Vitamin B12 which can be taken like Cyanobalamine. This supplement can be absorbed in a very small quantity by the body. So in order use it the body transforms it into Methylcobalamine which could be absorbed easily by the body.

Tips to Exercise if you have Nerve Damage:

It is very important for the person suffering from nerve damage to exercise. But as this condition results in the pain and numbness in the feet so it becomes difficult for the person to exercise. So here are a few tips which can be followed while exercising in the condition of nerve damage. They are:

Avoid weight-bearing exercises like walking, running on treadmill etc. especially if you suffer from high degree of nerve damage.

As there are chances of foot injuries while exercising, so it is advisable to stick to using stationary bicycle or swimming.

Check your feet carefully after exercising and in case any irritation or sore formation is felt then it must be addressed at once to avoid infections. This is because infections could increase the risk of amputation.

Although regular exercise helps in reducing the risk of diabetic neuropathy but is advisable to carry them out on the areas of body which are affected by the nerve damage. According the exercise programs must be designed and carried out.

Before, you start with your exercise program it is advisable to consult with your doctor. He will perform a thorough check up of your feet and legs and judge the signs of peripheral neuropathy. Moreover, also ensure that you wear footwear of proper fitting, which will protect your feet from any further injury.

Before beginning an exercise program, ask your doctor to do a thorough exam of your legs and feet for signs of peripheral neuropathy. In addition, make sure you have properly fitted shoes to protect your feet from injury.
