Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas says Tottenham are unlikely to win the Premier League title this season despite spending £100million on new players.

Villas-Boas was allowed to splash the cash during the summer transfer window following the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, and he brought in seven new faces.

But despite bagging the likes of Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Erik Lamela, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches, Christian Eriksen and Paulinho, the Spurs manager has ruled out title talk.

‘The circumstances are difficult at the moment,’ said Villas-Boas when asked about a title push.

‘The investment that we have made raises expectations in people but what we have to do is create a team that bonds together.

‘That takes time and we see that our opponents are one step ahead as they have players who have been together for many years; that’s the advantage for them.

Villas-Boas might not be backing his side to win trophies right now, but he went on to add that in the future, their current crop could deliver success.

‘I think we have invested a lot in young players that have real potential,’ he added.

‘Obviously we will have to work with them to make sure they develop into the world stars that we think they can become.’

Gareth Bale could be forced to make his much-hyped Real Madrid debut at left-back should Marcello and Fabio Coentrao fail to shake off injuries ahead of Saturday’s clash at Villarreal.

Brazilian Marcello missed his country’s 3-1 friendly victory over Portugal last night with a thigh problem, while Coentrao limped out in the same game, meaning Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is facing the embarrassing prospect of using the world’s most expensive player as an emergency full-back.

Bale, who completed his £86million move to the Spanish giants on transfer deadline day, came through half an hour of Wales’ 3-0 defeat to Serbia on Tuesday.

And although Chris Coleman advised against using the 23-year-old for 90 minutes as he bids to fully recover from injury, Ancelotti may be left with no choice should Marcello or Coentrao fail to prove their fitness.

The former Tottenham man is no stranger to defence having come through the ranks at Southampton as a flying full-back before moving to Spurs, where he was eventually transformed into a fearsome winger.

However, Ancelotti has an abundance of options in attack, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema, Isco and Luka Modric all vying for roles – meaning Bale could quite easily be deployed in defence should the need arise.

It’s a sight Madrid president Florentino Perez is unlikely to enjoy, though – having shelled out a world record fee of £85.4million for the Welshman.

Wayne Rooney is set to make a dramatic return to the Manchester United side for the crunch derby with Manchester City next week.

Rooney, who missed England’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, has been nursing a nasty head injury picked up in training before the international break.

But after returning to full training this week, the 28-year-old has been penciled in to return for the clash with City at the Etihad Stadium.

The fixture has already been dubbed ‘a potential title decider’, and David Moyes has reportedly urged his medical staff to make sure Rooney is 100% fit for the match.

As such, Moyes will resist the temptation of bringing him back early, with games against Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen set to follow before the City fixture.

Rooney was subject of three offers from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, but United are ready to offer him a new deal if he plays well on his return, in a bid to end speculation over his future.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: you might have heard of him.

He is the footballer with the bad attitude and self-assured air of arrogance. He is the tall one who never plays well against English teams. He is the one who fights with team-mates and is a nightmare for his managers. And, oh yes, occasionally he finds a moment of genius.

A smile spreads across the familiar features of the 6ft 5in Paris St-Germain striker as he considers this popular perception of him.

"I read all the time that people think I'm arrogant," he says, settling down for our one-hour interview in Stockholm. "They say I am cocky, a bad character. I had that from a young age. But when they meet me, they say 'that image doesn't fit you.' Where I come from you never judge a person until you meet them. I would never do that."

So, who is the real Zlatan?

"I always put myself second - I like to make others happy," he explains. "Wherever I have played, I have won (nine league titles in the past 10 seasons with five clubs). But I only feel satisfied if my team-mates, the fans, everyone is happy. I have a big heart."

Is it true that he is hard to manage? "No. That is a picture someone painted of me that follows me wherever I go. If you talk to the coaches I have played for, the only one that would say maybe I was a problem was Pep Guardiola. (That is) if he has something to say, which I don't find he has."

Jordan stun Uzbekistan in penalty shootout to reach World Cup intercontinental play-off

JORDAN endured a floodlights failure and won a marathon penalty shoot-out 9-8 against Uzbekistan to reach an intercontinental play-off for next year's World Cup in dramatic fashion.

The nerveless visitors came back after conceding an early goal, leaving the scores at 1-1 at full-time, and then held firm despite an 18-minute delay when the lights went at Pakhtakor Stadium.

And in a gripping shoot-out they were able to celebrate a scarcely believable triumph when Anzur Ismailov failed to convert the decisive spot-kick.

Jordan, who were held 1-1 at home in last week's first leg, now go into a two-legged tie against the South America's fifth placed qualifiers - currently Uruguay - for their first-ever World Cup spot.

But the result meant further heartbreak for Uzbekistan, who also went out after a chaotic game in Tashkent when they last reached this stage eight years ago.

The evening had started promisingly for the hosts when they took full advantage of a free-kick for an infringement on the edge of the box on just five minutes.

Two-time Asian player of the year Server Djeparov's curling delivery was parried into the path of Ismailov, who buried the rebound on the far post.

The White Wolves were in the ascendancy for most of the first half but Jordan fired a warning when Ahmed Saleh grazed the netting with a snap shot on 40 minutes.

And just two minutes later, Saeed Murjan levelled the tie when he ran onto to a loose clearance and rammed a scorching half-volley past Murotjon Zukhurov in the Uzbek goal.

Jordan appeared content to play for extra-time and there was no surprise when the game went to an additional 30 minutes, with penalties looming.

But there were farcical scenes when, 10 minutes into the first extra period, the floodlights failed at the venerable venue, prompting loud jeers and a delay of 18 minutes.

Both teams were forced to leave the field for an interruption that was so long that players and officials were seen doing warm-up stretches before the game restarted.

The incident sucked any remaining urgency from the game and, with little attacking threat from either side, there was no surprise when it went to a penalties.

Uzbekistan missed their first two spot-kicks before hauling themselves back into the shoot-out.

But as the teams traded successful kicks Ismailov, scorer of Uzbekistan's goal in normal play, turned fall guy as his failed attempt put Jordan through.

Uzbekistan also suffered a bitter defeat in the Asian play-offs in 2005, when they had a successful penalty against Bahrain chalked off for encroachment.

Netherlands and Italy are first UEFA sides to World Cup 2014, England draw with Ukraine

ITALY and Netherlands are the first teams from Europe to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Netherlands became the first European nation to qualify after Louis van Gaal's team won 2-0 in Andorra thanks to a second-half brace from Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.

That result, coupled with Romania's 2-0 home defeat to Turkey, ensured that the Dutch could not be beaten to first place in qualifying Group D.

Italy secured qualification with two games to spare after a patchy but dominant 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

The four-time champions now have 20 points from eight games played in qualifying Group B, seven more than Bulgaria with two qualifiers remaining.

Germany are now just one win away from securing their Brazil 2014 berth after a 3-0 win at 10-man minnows the Faroe Islands.

Germany stay five points clear at the top of Group C, but Sweden's 1-0 win over Kazakhstan earlier in the day means that, despite dropping two points in eight games, the Germans must beat the Republic of Ireland in Cologne next month to confirm automatic qualification.

A single first-half strike by Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker was all Germany had to show for 74 minutes of endeavour until his Gunners' team-mate Mesut Ozil netted a late penalty.

Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller then added a third in the dying stages.

Meanwhile, England remain top of their World Cup qualifying group after claiming a hard fought 0-0 draw with Ukraine in Kiev.

On a night of few chances, it was the home side who perhaps edged it - but the defence - brilliantly marshalled by Chelsea's Gary Cahill - stood firm.

Ukraine had the oustanding player on the night in the shape of winger Yevhen Konoplyanka and he went closest to opening the scoring with his free-kick with 20-minutes left but it deflected just inches wide off Phil Jagielka.

On his 100th appearance for his country Frank Lampard had a real chance in the final-minute with England's best chance but he headed wide.

England now know that victory in their final two qualifying games with Montenegro and Poland, both at Wembley in October, will seal their place at the World Cup finals.

Franck Ribery netted a brace as France twice came from behind to win 4-2 in Belarus in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier, ending a run of five games without a goal for Didier Deschamps' side.

Despite setting a new national record for the longest goalscoring drought, France came alive in the second half to record their first win in six matches and draw level with Spain at the top of Group I, albeit having played a game more than the world champions.

Shaun Maloney's late free-kick snatched a well-deserved 2-1 victory for Scotland in their Group A World Cup qualifier in Macedonia.

The lively Ikechi Anya's expertly-taken goal just before the hour mark had given the visitors the lead, but Jovan Kostovski looked to have shared the spoils, bundling in a sublime Goran Pandev pass late on to equalise.

However Maloney had other ideas, curling a brilliant set piece past Tomislav Paèovski in the host's goal to send the Tartan Army into raptures, and move the Scots off the bottom of the group.

Goals from unlikely sources steered Bosnia to a comeback 2-1 win over Slovakia in their World Cup Group G qualifier on Tuesday and kept them on course to reach their first major tournament as an independent nation.

Goals from Burak Yilmaz and Mevlut Erdinc secured a 2-0 victory for Turkey in Romania on Tuesday to keep their hopes of featuring in next summer's World Cup alive; Fabio Capello's Russia took a big step towards securing their place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil after a strong second half show saw off Israel in their Group F clash in St Petersburg, but Republic of Ireland saw their World Cup hopes all but ended after going down to a 1-0 defeat to Austria in Vienna.

David Alaba's late goal condemned the Irish to defeat in what was a must-win encounter for Giovanni Trapattoni's men after Sweden's win in Kazakhstan earlier on Tuesday.

The defeat is sure to signal the end of Giovanni Trapattoni's reign as Republic manager with the Italian expected to pay for the failure to qualify for Brazil next summer.

Roy Hodgson: England lacked ‘quality’ needed to take chances in Ukraine

Roy Hodgson bemoaned the lack of ‘quality’ as his side played out a 0-0 draw in Ukraine – but admits they got the job done.

The point gained in Kiev sees England go a point clear at the top of Group H, with Montenegro and Poland still to travel to Wembley in a bid to qualify for next summer’s World Cup in Rio.

And England’s performance, while leaving a fair bit to be desired, pleased Hodgson especially in the absence of the likes of Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck.

‘It was probably a fair result. I think we had clear control of the game in the second half,’ he said.

‘We have lost seven players from the original squad and I think we have to be more than satisfied with the results. We gained the result without riding our luck.

‘If we had had a Daniel Sturridge or Wayne Rooney available, we might have got the goal.

‘It was for them to be adventurous, not us. In the first half, there were quite a few interesting situations. Perhaps we did not have quite the quality we needed to make that count.

‘Had we thrown caution to the wind, we’d have come out of here with a 0-1 which would have virtually ended our hopes of topping the group.’

And England skipper Steven Gerrard was equally honest in his assessment.

‘I don’t think it was top class but defensively we were solid. Before the game the manager said we need to keep it in our hands and it gives us the final two games to win to get through,’ he said.

‘We have a better chance to beat our competitors at Wembley. We always knew Ukraine would push us all the way. We always knew we were going to have to do it the hard way.

‘We done the job, I don’t think it was top class, but the job was done.’
