British Home Child Day ~ Remembering Henry Laws

Today is the first official day of remembrance for British Home Children in Ontario. British home children, are the thousands of children taken from their homes in Britten and send as indentured workers around the world. Some were sent to Australia, over 100,000 were sent to Canada between 1870 and until the late 1940's. It is estimated that 12% of Canadians can trace their family roots to a British home child. I am one of many Canadians with home child roots.

Henry "Harry" Laws
1887-1965

My Great Grandfather Henry Laws was born in 1887 in Birmingham, England. His father Henry Sr. was a wire weaver and although he must have worked long and hard hours the family like most was not well off. Henry's mother Caroline died 7 Jul 1893, after her death the daily care of the children likely fell to the oldest daughter while father Henry was at work.
In 1897 Henry Jr. and his younger brother William were picked up for truancy, with their father unable to pay the fine he was faced with a terrible choice. He could be sent to prison for non payment, presumably all the children would then be placed into a work house, or he could turn the 2 boys over to a work house.
As hard on the family as this must have been Henry Jr. and William were sent to the Middlemore home in Birmingham together. A few months later they were sent to Canada.
Luckily they were able to travel together and although they were sent to different farms to work on, they were only about a mile apart with a river between them and able to keep in touch.

Henry grew up to work for the railroad, becoming a section foreman in Queenstown, Maple Grove and later Marysville, New Brunswick. Henry married Bessie Puddington in 1912 and raised 5 children together. In Marysville he owned a 100 acre farm that was largely made up of bush, that he logged.

While Henry passed away long before I was born, his quiet strength lives on in family memory.

Yesterday I posted 2 generations of the Lawes family. Today I'm sharing the obit for Henry Lawes Jr., my G Grandfather.

Laws: Harry H. Laws, age 78 years. 343 Canada Street, Marysville, passed away at his home October 3, 1965. Survived by five sons, six grandchildren.
Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road, then taken to his late home to rest until Tuesday at 2 p.m. when service will be held. Rev. G. Howard Christie will officiate.
Interment in the United Church Cemetery.

After marriage he changed his last name from Lawes to Laws.

George Edward Lawes and Lily Bernardine C Gibbons were married. Lily Bernardine C Gibbons was born on 10 Jun 1894 in Oxford.

Charles & Margaret Stinson

A little while ago I posted about the Stinson family I was working on. I've made a little progress, but also hit many brick walls.
I've been able to track the older children listed in the 1851 census (listed in the post linked to above), but the parents have just vanished.
The Anglican Archives checked for a death record for Margaret and Charles Stinson between 1851 and 1861, nothing found. So they should be out there hiding some where! They did send me a number of records, but they turned out to be for the wrong family. The family was James and Alice Stinson, who's name on the 1851 census is miss written as Stanson. All the census after that time show their name as Stinson, as do the baptism records in the 1840's in Etobicoke.

Margaret is listed as married and not widowed in the census, but her husband does not show up in the census anywhere so far. If he had passed away and she remarried then their should be a record of his death, nothing.

Adding to the mystery, the Robert Stinson in the census above paid for a burial plot in 1855. The first person buried in it is James Stinson age 61. He was also a cooper. Now this James does not appear in the census, so far either! The rest of the burials in that plot were of Robert's children. There is a family connection here. But I don't know yet if James is actually Charles the father, or perhaps an uncle.

I have not been able to find any of the younger children, other then McLean Stinson. He pops back up in 12 Apr 1876, in Etobicoke, York Co., Ontario, Canada, when he marries Francis Mary C Hill. They are found in the 1881 census together along with two children Charles and Russel.
But where was he in 1861 and 1871??

Hopefully the missing parents and children can be found. Even better would be a firm link to MY Margaret Mills (nee Stinson).

Happy St. Patrick's Day! ~ Stinson, My Irish Roots

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I have only found one Irish line in my family so far and I'm just beginning to trace it.

Margaret Stinson, my G G Grandmother was born about 1834 in Ireland. She married James Mills on 21 Feb 1851 in St Phillips Anglican Church, Etobicoke, York Co., Ontario, Canada.

Margaret is show on the 1851 Canada census living with her husbands family in Etobicoke. By the next census in 1861 they had moved to Melancthon Township in Grey County. Note that Melancthon, later became part of Dufferin Co.

They were blessed with 13 children, whom I will share more about in another post.

Margaret died 17 Sept 1907 in Melancthon twp.

While my search for Margaret's parents is just beginning her marriage record states that she was from Etobicoke. The 1851 census shows only 3 Stinson families living there at that time.

It is mostly likely that Margaret was a daughter of the first family I listed. Margaret Stinson age 44. The area is right, the naming patterns fit and the religion is also right. The last listing is for a Stinson family who are Catholic, and my Margaret always listed Church of England as her religion. I'm hoping I can find a little more firm information.

Mocavo ~ New Genealogy Search Engine

Last night I heard about a new search engine that was just released. It's name is Mocavo and it's is a genealogy search engine for ONLY FREE genealogy resources.
I spent some time searching on it last night and I really do like it. The results come up quickly and it's nice not to have to weed though tons of Facebook returns for ancestors that lived years ago that have a similar name.
While I didn't find any new information with it yet, I think this site has a lot of promise.
I hope as it grows it will start adding genealogy forums and blogs and sites like Family Search to it's search index.

Sorting Saturday ~ Bookmarks, Facebook & Blog Feeds

With the snow flying and cold wind blowing I decided to sit at my pc with my hot coco today and do some organizing. I have been collecting links and other info for some time and it's getting harder to find things.

The first thing I did was start using Facebook Lists. I made one for genealogy and one for family. Eventually I might break this down farther but it works well for now. Now I can quickly filter my feed to find posts I'm looking for.

Up next was my Google reader. I have a large number of blogs in that but I wanted them separated by categories. I set up my categories and worked through a few hundred blogs sorting them out.

I still need to figure out a good method to keep my bookmarks. I use more then one browser, and some times I'm on hubby's computer. Because of this I'm looking at different online bookmarking sites. So far I'm liking Diigo the best. I like that it's not just for collecting bookmarks, but that it can also place sticky notes, archive a page and some other handy options. But I'm afraid it will take me a while to get ALL my bookmarks moved over. lol

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History #10 Disasters ~ Hurricane Hazel

Week 10: Disasters. Did you experience any natural disasters in your lifetime? Tell us about them. If not, then discuss these events that happened to parents, grandparents or others in your family.

I haven't really been through any disasters, not in the way I would describe disasters anyway. Living in Canada I've been through many snow storms. It is not to uncommon to get snowed in for a few days. Once this past winter the roads here were closed for 3 days in a row, and a mess for another 2 days after that. We were house bound for a week. But I don't really consider things like that disasters. We prepare for though things a head of time, because they do happen a few times each winter.

Image by Lone Primate via FlickrIt wasn't something that was discussed much. But I do remember hearing about the flooding in the streets and that they saw boats floating down the streets. They had been blown in from the marinas. I know my family was living in an apartment in Toronto at the time. I'm going to have to ask my Aunt more about this event!

From what I've read Toronto, Ontario was one of the hardest hit places from Hurricane Hazel. The area had received a heavy amount of rainfall before the storm hit, leaving the ground already saturated. Most of the rain from Hazel rain right off into the rivers and raised their level by 6 to 8 meters. Many roads were washed out and damaged, over 50 bridges destroyed. Sadly killing 81 people.

My Grandfather Gordon Laws was a cop for a few years in Toronto. I wonder if he was during this disaster and what role he might have had in helping.

Fearless Females March 7 ~ Recipes

Lisa at the Accidental Genealogist is running a Fearless Females blogging prompt for March womans history month. I've missed a few posts and hope to catch up soon!

March 7 — Share a favorite recipe from your mother or grandmother’s kitchen. Why is this dish your favorite? If you don’t have one that’s been passed down, describe a favorite holiday or other meal you shared with your family.

Grandma Hilda Laws (nee Anderson) wasn't one for cooking sweets, or not that I can remember. She did make a few dishes that I really enjoyed. One favorite was her mashed potato salad that I still make today.

Mashed Potato Salad

Fill a medium pot with potatoes, pealed and quarterer. Bring to a boil. When soft drain and mash.
Then add some milk and whip.
Dice 1 large onion and mix in.
Mix in enough Miracle Whip dressing until the salad is nice and creamy.
Place in the fridge until well chilled.

Week 9: Sounds. Describe any sounds that take you back to your childhood. These could be familiar songs, jingles, children playing, or something entirely different.

Thinking back on sounds that remind me of my childhood, there are quite a few! Many of them remind me of my Grandmother Hilda Laws (nee Anderson). Nana was a big tea drinker, something I have inherited! I can remember hearing the sound of her whistling tea kettle many times a day. I have fond memories of sitting with Nana for tea and cookies.
Nana was an avid knitter when I was very young and the clicking sound of the knitting needles remind me of sitting with her in the evenings.
The sound a horse harness makes when a team is hooked up always reminds me of my Dad. He used horses when working in the bush, pulling firewood logs out. The jingle of the chains brings me right back to being knee high watching Dad pull the huge logs out. Well they looked huge at the time. lol

Other general sounds:
1. Theme songs to Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup.
2. Whistle of the train when it passed near out home.
3. Croaking frogs from the swamp near out home.

Week 8: Technology. What are some of the technological advances that happened during your childhood? What types of technology to you enjoy using today, and which do you avoid?

This could be a big topic!

Cable: I remember when we were little our T.V. was huge, mostly because it was in a wooden case. I've seen similar old ones turned into fish tanks in the middle that look quite nice! Anyway we had a big antenna in the back yard, but we were still lucky to pull in 3 or 4 channels. Many times they were fuzzy.
I can remember the day the cable man came and hooked up our TV. Now we had this black box that sat on top of the TV. It had a row of number buttons you had to push down to change the channel. But, there was no more fuzzy pictures! Ahh it was nice to have a clear image.

Computers: I can remember our school got their first computers when I was very young. I think some time between grade 3 and 4. They were the type that used cassette tapes not disks.
A few years latter I was able to get my own computer, used of course as they were still very expensive. It was a Tandy 100 and did not have a hard drive. It did have 2 disk drives that held the 5.24" floppy disks. But boy was I happy!

Video games: I was about 11 when we got our first video game unit. It was a Nintendo and not long after the Supper Nintendo came out and we got that one to. We had a lot of fun playing thoughts games. It was good rainy day or snow day fun! Although I still loved to curl up with a good book!

Breaking Down Brick Walls ~ Frederick Robichaud

Anyone who starts researching their family tree will eventually run into a mysterious ancestor. One that seemed to appear out of no where, just to drive you crazy.
My 2nd Great Grandfather Frederick Robichaud was my big challenge. He seamed to have appeared in the 1891 census married to Elizabeth Gallant with 4 children, with no links to the past. His marriage record seams to be missing as well.

Some times when I have trouble finding information out about an ancestor I will try searching for trees already done. While they are not always correct some times they will be just the stepping stone needed.
Unfortunately I could not find many trees with my ancestor in them and the few I found stopped with him. Also most only listed one of the children. Every reference to the family showed it as a dead end.

After digging through census, I had a very strong suspicion that my Frederick was the same one listed in the 1901 census but with a new wife Catherine. The older children closely matched in names and their marriage record listed Frederick as a widow. This was also the feelings of some very helpful people from some forums. (Thank you!)
It was from this marriage record I was able to get Frederick's birth place as Pokemouche, New Brunswick. His parents were listed as Luc Robichaud and Archange Arseneau.
Things were begging to come together that is until i could find no record of that couple ever having a child name Frederick!

Now the family was pretty well documented, at least the fathers side. But all the trees I found did not list a Frederick and neither did the census data. BUT their was a Ferdinand and he was about the right age. Frederick was a common nickname for Ferdinand. But although I was 95% sure they were the same person I could not prove it.

Then last week I put my back out. Normally NOT a good thing. LOL! But it did give me an opportunity to do a lot of reading. I decided to tackle reading the church ledgers on Ancestry. Up until that point I had only been able to locate one of the baptism records for the children of Fredericks first marriage.
I started with the one the record I had found and then went forward in time until I finally found my G Grandmothers baptism. It didn't come up in the searches because only the last name was indexed!
After that I went backwards in time. Slowly I was able to find most of the records.

But it was when I came to the record for Joseph Alexander Robichaud that tears came to my eye's. There it was! Parents listed as Ferdinand Frederick Robichaud and Eliza Gallant!
Yes he had been going by a nickname all his married life.

So I'm thrilled to have put that question to rest. Now if I could just find the missing birth/baptism records for their first 3 children John, Albert and William! I'm sure if I can find them, I might also find Frederick (Ferdinand's) and Elizabeth Gallants marriage record.
The oldest 3 all list Loggieville, New Brunswick as their birth place. But I have been unable to find the records so far....

Almost Wordless Wednesday ~ Grandma Laws Nursing School

My Grandmother Hilda Laws (nee Anderson) (1915 - 2006). This photo was taken some time in the 1930's I believe, in New Brunswick, Canada. Most likely in the Marysville or Fredericton area. Grandma worked as a nurse all her life and I've been told she is wearing a training uniform in this photo. The building behind her reads Robinson Memorial 1818.
If anyone knows where this building was and anything about the school, I would love to hear from you!

Ancestor Approved Award

I've received the Ancestors Approved award from The Hummer at Branching Out Through the Years. Thank you so much! Ancestors Approved was started by Leslie Ann at Ancestors Lived Here.
I'm suppose to share 10 things about my ancestors that have surprised, humbled or enlightened me and share this award with 10 other bloggers.

1. Finding out my father went by his middle name all his life surprised me. I never knew his first name was John until I saw his obit in the library.
2. Humbled to discover my G Grandmother lost two brothers to WW1, her husband at the end of the war, her 2 year old son and her father all with in a few years. What a strong woman she must have been to carry on for her family.
3. Surprised to find my G Grandmother had more then the 1 sibling I was told about.
4. Surprised to find so many distant and close family online. Some of whom have an interest in family history!
5. Surprised to find out the Puddington side of the family I was told was American, actually came from Canada lived in the USA for just a few years and moved back to Canada. lol
6. Surprised to find so many brick walls all on the same family side. At times I really think they are hiding from me. lol
7. Surprised at how far across North America my Grandmothers family has spread, and it's a small branch!
8. Surprised to find a photo of my Grandmother as a child and see how much my 3 year old looks like her.
9. Surprised to find out that my father and his first wife shared 1 set of grandparients Thomas Grummet & Sarah Price Whisker. He descended from their daughter Maria Grummett and his wife from their son Jessie Grummett.
10. Humbled to find out how much my childhood had in common with my Grandmothers. We both lost our fathers about the same age. etc.

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History #2 ~ Winter Memories

Week 2: Winter. What was winter like where and when you grew up? Describe not only the climate, but how the season influenced your activities, food choices, etc.

I grew up in Ontario, Canada we lived in an area often called the snow belt. The weather here can change quickly. One moment the sky's are Crystal clear and a few minutes later you have a strong snow squall coming in off the lakes. Most of our snow comes from squall's off lake Huron.
What I remember best about winter as a child is how much snow we always had. The fence around our home was 4 feet high and the snow was often over that. Yes even in the backyard far away from were the tractors would blow the snow. It would be an easy thing to walk from our yard to the neighbors. No need to go through gates and walk around! Most of the time we had so much snow that you couldn't open the gates anyway. If you wanted through you had to climb or hop it. Not that us kids minded that at all.
We had a small hill in the back yard that was great for sliding on. I remember one Christmas we got big red sleds. That winter we spent a lot of time in the back yard.

Our favorite foods in the winter were hot dishes. Lots of soups with biscuits or rolls, roasted chicken or beef suppers. Hot chocolate and warm cookies were a must as well!

Our children enjoy the same things now as I did then. Except we have a bigger hill for them to go rushing down!

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History Week #1 ~ New Year's

I decided this year to follow along with the 52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History hosted by Geneabloggers. Each week they post a topic, and wouldn't you know it I'm already a week behind. LOL!

Week 1: Did your family have any New Year’s traditions? How was the New Year celebrated during your childhood? Have you kept these traditions in the present day?!

New Years has never been a big celebration in our family. I don't remember ever staying up as a child to watch the clock strike midnight, nor do I remember anyone in my family doing so. We were usually all fast asleep by then.
I do remember that we often would have a big supper on New Years day. Some what like a mini revival of Christmas dinner. More likely it would have been chicken or beef on the menu. As a child our Christmas school holidays ran the week of and after Christmas ending with New Years. So while New Years was the start of a fresh year, the following weekday was also time to head back to classes.
To this day our family doesn't celebrate New Years much. Maybe some day that will change...

Genealogy Plans 2011

I don't normally make new years resolutions. However it is nice to take some time to think about your plans for the coming year.
I started working on my family tree 20ish years ago, then put my research on hold 11 years ago and finally restarted this past fall. With the new wealth of records online I have made more progress in my research in the past few months then I had in the earlier years!
I've also been very blessed to be able to get in touch with family members online whom I hadn't known.

My hopes for 2011 are:

Organization: I have a huge amount of documents and scanned images that need to be organized. I'm working to finish my pc hard drive organization. Get all the files in their proper place and linked into my genealogy software.

Scanning: I would like to finish scanning in my older photos and the newer ones taken before I started having them put on CD's.

Research: I would like to order the BMD (Birth, Marriage, Death) certificates for for my direct ancestors that I'm missing.
I would like to get a subscription to the Swedish online archives. My Great Grandfather Oscar Anderson came from Sweden and I would like to find his family there.
Keep searching for the marriage info on Frederick Robichaud and Elizabeth Gallant. They are the parents of my Great Grandmother. I have Fredericks info from his second marriage, but have been unable to find Elizabeth's parents.
I would also LOVE to find some photos of my father when he was a young man or boy.

Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories #21 ~ Christmas Music

Question # 21:
What songs did your family listen to during Christmas? Did you ever go caroling? Did you have a favorite song?

When I was little I can remember playing the Chipmunks Christmas record over and over again. Others that were played often were Elvis Blue Christmas and one of my Grandma's favorites Conway Twitty's Christmas.
A favorite would be hard to pick as I love so many songs. But Silent Night and Away in a Manger would be at the top.

Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories #19 ~ Christmas Shopping

I'm a little behind in posting this week! Question #19 was:
How did your family handle Christmas Shopping? Did anyone finish early or did anyone start on Christmas Eve?

My earliest memories of Christmas shopping were always with the Sears Wish Book. It would arrive some time in late October I think and everyone would enjoy looking through it. As we lived in a small town Sears was the most popular way of shopping.
Us kids didn't real make a wish list, but we would circle things we really hoped for in the catalog. Most years we would find it under the tree.
Now that I have my own family we do things a little differently. I no longer order from Sears as I've found there quality has really gone down. Some years I make all of our gifts and other years we pick out a few special things to give our kids. Our focus at Christmas isn't on giving expensive gifts, but spending time with our family and building memories.

Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories #16 ~ Christmas At School

I have a few memories of Christmas time in school when I was little. I can remember our Christmas parties. They would normally be held on the last day before Christmas break. Often we would get to watch a movie and have snacks that must have been provided by teachers or parents.
I do remember most of December was spent making Christmas crafts and cards. I don't think I have any of these.
The only Christmas play I remember just barely, was in early elementary. Each class had to put on a song, I can't remember what song ours was singing. But I do remember we all had bells, shakers and triangles to play. I think I was playing a triangle. I don't believe any photos were ever taken of these plays. But I do remember being very nervous standing up on that big stage!

Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories #15 ~ Holiday Happenings

There are a few Christmas time birthdays in my family, mine being one of them! Some people dislike having a birthday near Christmas because your special day often gets combined with the Christmas holiday. Some times as a child I felt that way, but most of the time I loved having a Christmas season birthday! I loved the decorations, the beautiful music every where.

Peal & Eldon Chapman

When I was a little girl my Aunt Carol would make me wonderful cakes. She loved to decorate cakes, something I would love to learn one day! Some times they would be teddy bear cakes or a Christmas theme. As for birthday gifts some years I got to pick out one or two Christmas gifts from under the tree to open early. I thought that was really cool when I was little! Then as I got older some times I would also get a special gift unrelated to Christmas.

Another relative who had a December birthday was my Great Aunt Pearl Chapman (nee Anderson). Pearl was born 25 Dec 1919, yes a Christmas day birthday! I have a feeling Aunt Pearl loved Christmas as she also chose Christmas day as her wedding day. She married Eldon Chapman on 25 Dec 1941, in Fredericton New Brunswick.
