At the moment you can use the iPhone version to watch all the major british television channels through your browser (no app needed) – just sign up for the free account. The picture quality isn’t great but hopefully an iPad version (apparently it’s in the making) will sort that soon.

Sky broadcasts it’s news and sport channels via iPad app – and it’s looking great! You obviously need a subscription, £6 a month if you already paying for Sky TV/Sports, £35(uh) if you are not.

LogMeIn Ignition for iPad is a remote access software that enables you to connect to Mac or Pc from your iPad (connected to the internet). You install a host application on your target computer and log in on both the computer and your iPad.

Plus

- works on Mac and PC
- easy to setup and use
- reliable both over wifi and 3g (with lower color quality)
- simple to perform all sorts of tasks (system administration, creating documents, email, even playing flash games)
- iPad and iPhone version for one price

Minus

- with £17.99 price tag, it’s quite expensive
- hiccups with system specific special keys (ctrl, alt, option)

Equals

LogMeIn Ignition is possibly the best remote access app available for iPad. It is very well supported, easy to setup and simple to use.

1. Download and install necessary software

First you need a program called Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) and a video player called VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Download both in 32bit version (they need to be the same and at the moment 64bit version of VLC isn’t availiable). Installation of both programs is very straightforward.

2. Converting DVD

Insert the DVD into your mac (or pc) – it might lunch your default DVD player application -if it does, quit it. Now run Handbrake – it will open a source dialog, asking you to locate file to convert. Just click on the DVD name on the very left and hit Open.

Now Handbrake will scan DVD for Titles. Titles are multiple sections on DVD – if you are converting film, select the longest one (should be by default anyway), if it’s TV show with multiple episodes, they will show up as different titles and you have to convert each of them separately (or add them in a Queue).

Next select the Destination (it’s under the Titles dropdown) – browse to location on your hard-drive with at least 1GB of free space.
Now  you can either set all the conversion settings your self (if you know what they do) or make it easier for your self and just select a preset from the right side bar. For iPad, I recommend the Apple Universal preset.

Before you start converting, you might want to add subtitles, if the film isn’t in your language.

In the Subtitles section, you can either select a DVD subtitle track or add External SRT file, make sure Burned In is checked if you are converting for iPad.

Ok, you are ready to go now, just hit Start button in the top left corner and wait for the conversion to finish – it will tell you estimated time, to rip a DVD will take from 45 minutes to one hour.

3. Copy the film to your iPad

Depending on where you set your converted file to go (Destination settings) – go there, grab a file and drop it in your iTunes library (not the iPad movie list!).

Now with your iPad connected, you can go to  iPad library in iTunes and select movies from the top bar. If you check “Sync movies” you will find the converted film in a list bellow, just select it and Sync.

Numbers is simple to use spreadsheet app from Apple iWork suite, that makes tables and data sheets more practical for everyday use.

Plus

- friendly way of making nice, useful spreadsheets
- keyboard adapts to the task you are doing
- simple yet powerful

Minus

- very clumsy document syncing – you have to transfer files in an awkward way via iTunes

Equals

Numbers seems like the best of the iWork suite for iPad – still suffers from the same awkward way of transferring files, but if you can chew through that, you will enjoy it!
