I apologize for not maintaining this blog like I started. To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of interest in this blog. I have another blog that has become very popular, and I'm very happy about that. However, I would prefer to write about changing the world as women of color rather than cute boy celebrities. What a dilemma! Any ideas?

It was announced today that Jamie Lynne Spears, star of "Zoey 101" and little sister of SHE WHO WON'T BE NAMED, is 12 weeks pregnant. According to this article in OK Magazine, the pregnancy came as a complete shock to the 16 year old. So, this gets me thinking about child actors, teen stars, and role model for young Koloured Grrls. Suddenly, I remember reading somewhere that Raven Symone was worth $500,000,000!!!! That's about $494,000,000 more than her former roommate Lindsay Lohan, yet you don't see Raven stumbling out of nightclubs, carjacking strangers, making sex tapes, stepping out of cars with no damn drawers on, shaving her head bald, or doing jail time. In an industry that is constanly ignoring the talents of young koloured grrls, this mega-diva is a singer/actress/dancer/tv and movie producer. Raven saw abundance where others saw no profit, yet gain so much more than anyone expected. She was also recently named one of 4 female stars that young girls can actually look up to. Out of the 4, 2 were grrls of koloure. Miss Raven has also refused to follow the stick skinny trend like some of her fellow teen queen stars (remember when Hilary Duff lost a whole bunch of weight?), reflecting a positive body image. I do think she's a bit chunky and could use a jog or two, but at least she's embracing her curves.

The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention reported an increase in teen pregnancy for the first time in 14 years. Read about it here. However, the rates have dropped 58% in the past 10 years in Washington DC, especially among African Americans. Go figure.

So, CONGRATULATIONS to Raven Symone for not being a hot ghetto mess, robbing dry cleaners, driving down the wrong side of the highway, or suing her parents. She's got a new movie coming out, "College Road Trip" starring Martin Lawrence as he father. Make sure you see it with a special young grrl.

Long Island Millionaires Buy Slaves! Good Help Is Hard To Find!

Maybe we don't know more about this cuz we don't wanna. Today, a Long Island couple was found guilty of enslaving and torturing their 2 Indonesian housemaids. Click here to read the article from CNN.

Essence Magazine just published an article about Mende Nazer, who wrote a book, "Slave", about her abduction and being forced into slavery at 12.

{By the way, great job, Essence!!! The book was written in 2004. Nice way to keep folks informed on the state of our people!}

Found another article about how bad human trafficking is in Tanzania!!!! Finally, another about a possible agreement by the WTO to legalize slavery and how it would affect women!!!!

But, alas, some good news!!

I found some evidence that BOTH Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama are aware of the issue.

In Memory of Ike Turner-KOLOURED GRRLS HALL OF FAME-TINA TURNER

In loving memory of Ike Turner, I have done 2 things. First, I decided to induct Tina Turner into the Hall Of Fame. We all know her past struggles and accomplishments, I don't need to list them. Being the Queen, that she is, she has declined to comment on her former spouse's passing. Second, I have made a donation to The Family Violence Prevention Fund in Ike Turner's name. If the same people who are trashing his name donate $10 to the fund, it can save the lives of many a woman. According to the Law of Attraction, everything and everyone has a purpose. His contribution to the world has been immeasurable. Regardless of broken ribs, blackened eyes, or bloodied lips, nothing could beat the shine of a TRUE STAR!!

Being that we are right smack dab in the middle of the Holiday Season, I started wondering about holiday foods and body image. So, I did some research. A recent article from ABC News disclosed an increasing trend among Australian young women between the ages of 11 and 24 who are becoming more concerned about their body image. Click here to read. Another article, described how those with eating disorders become highly anxious and depressed around holiday time. Click here to read it. Then, I researched some more. This is what I found out from Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc., a non-profit organization.

1% of female teens have anorexia
4% of college age women have bulimia
72% of alcoholic women under 30 have eating disorders
People with eating disorders are more likely to have substance abuse problems

Thank goodness for folks like Debby Burgard,PhD She's a liscenced psychologist who has focuses on eating, weight, and sexuality concerns of women. Check out her website, Body Positive. While you're at it, check out these others.

Finally, I just wanna say, we can't utilize our power if we're too unhealthy to exist. So, have that fruitcake, take that second helping of ham, and load up on the eggnog. Just remember to focus just as much on fitness as you do food during the holiday. Get up and Dance! Go for a walk with family and friends. Laugh loudly and long. Happiness burns calories. Plus, according to the law of attraction, if you want to be fit and healthy, help some one else be fit and healthy.

JODIE FOSTER IS A....!!!??? Really??

I have been a fan of Jodie Foster for years. If you were born in the early 1970's, you'll remember her as the strong willed tomboy from television and movies. One movie in particular, "The Little Girl Who Lived Down The Lane", is one that I hope to get my hands on again.

Ms. Foster was recently given a much deserved award at the Hollywood Reporter's Women In Entertainment Power 100 breakfast. Click here to read the article. Yet folks wanna gossip about Foster outing herself, by thanking her wife (long time partner sounds to formal and fake) for her support over the years. Now, I can be a bit slow about these things, but I didn't know she was a lesbian until about 10 years ago. I think after watching the movie "Maverick", with Mel Gibson, I finally saw the light. She wasn't very convincing as Mel's love interest.

So, what makes her a Koloured Grrl?

For focusing for more than 30 years on the craft of acting, not the fame or celebrity.
For doing "Panic Room" instead of Nicole Kidman.
For constantly representing tough ass chicks (of any Kolour) who don't take no shiznit from anybody, both in her personal life and on screen.
For keeping us out of her personal life.
For driving a dude so crazy, that he tries to kill the President...DAMN!!!
For the movie "Foxes"...what?...you don't know?

THE POWER IS IN OUR HANDS: Election 2008

I'm freaking out right now. I just found out I'm a lot more powerful than I thought. I could become one of the most powerful women in any field I manifest. I finally have proof. I just found out that Condoleezza Rice has the EXACT same birthday as I do...November 14th...She's 16 years older than me. SHE'S A SCORPIO!!! This explains a lot. So, this gets me thinking. How am I using my power for positive change? Eventually, my power will change the labels in my closet from Gap to Gucci, but what can I do on a regular basis to bring about change? One thing I always look forward to doing is voting. I've never missed a Presidential Election since first voting for Bill Clinton to oust Big Daddy Bush. I have to admit, I haven't made a solid descion as for as who I prefer, Clinton, Obama, or Edwards. Looks like I'm not the only one who feels that way. How in the world do we benefit from this? There is a bigger evil we must as women ban together to fight. This madness doesn't accomplish anything!! True empowerment doesn't come from anger and violence!!!

Nearly one-third of American women (31 %) report to being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
Intimate partner violence is primarily a crime against women. In 2001, women accounted for 85% of the victims of intimate partner violence
As many as 324,000 women each year experience domestic violence during their pregnancy.
Women are much more likely to be killed by an intimate partner. In 2000, domestic homicides acounted for 33.5% of the murders of women.
One in five female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
50% of men who frequently assaulted their wives, also frequently abused their children

As American women, we have the responsiblity to be aware of what is happening to out grrls in Africa. FABULOSITY, TOUGH TIMES, AND THE POWER OF THOUGHT

I recently had 2 band experiences this month while job searching. Both times, I was given the impression that I had the job only to be told, pretty rudely, that I did not. Both times, I had to call and speak to someone in the corporate offices hoping to get some explanation about the "mistake" made. Apparently, what happened to me is a common occurrence here in Vegas. Which would explain the recent downturn in the city's quality of customer service and hospitality. After I finished crying (a lot) and crapping on myself. I had to take a step back and ask myself why I was attracting these situations. So, I listened to my favorite podcast from Antonio Thorton, and had a moment of clarity. I realized two things.

As long as I continue to battle feelings of low self worth, I will continue to attract situations that make me feel worthless.
A job does not determine my worth or value as a person.

So, I'm putting the job search thing on hold for a while, sticking with the job position that I have, trying to move up in the company I'm with.

Meanwhile, I picked up my copy of "Fabulosity: What It Is & How To Get It", by Kimora Lee Simmons. I checked out a list of confidence tips in her Self-Belief And Confidence chapter.

What Do You Want NOW!!!??? part 2: Motivation and Power

***DEFINING WHAT I WANT***I recently browsed through one of my favorite books, "Power, Money, Fame, Sex: A User's Guide". The first chapter about Power, has a quick quiz to define whether I want direct power or indirect power. With direct power, it is my voice, for example as a school board member, that helps pass a safe sex curriculum. With indirect power, it is my voice, for example as a sex education teacher, that positively influences young people about HIV prevention and awareness. So, do I prefer direct power, to shape the outcome of events, to be force to be reckoned with, and to gain credit for my actions? Or indirect power, to shape other's thoughts, to not necessarily be part of the main mix, but to still influence the outcome. According to the quiz, I prefer indirect power. Which is fine by me. How am I gonna get this power? Well this is where I turn to the 3 Elements Of Motivation.
1. BE CREATIVE: Use my creativity to find a vision, to start a goal.
2.BE INQUISITIVE: Love to learn everything and anything.
3. BE FEARLESS: Have the courage to overcome failure to bounce back.

***THE MORE YOU USE THE POWER WITHIN YOU, THE MORE POWER YOU WILL DRAW THROUGH YOU*** According to the Laws Of Attraction, the more you give, the more you will receive. If I want POWER, I must be POWER. ***WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH IT?*** I plan to use my superpowers for the good of mankind. I sure as hell hope that I don't fall for the trappings of impunity, running around like my ass can get away with anything. Elizabeth Taylor used her power to make sure, by contract, that she didn't have to work during her period. On the other hand, Hilary Clinton made sure her office was in the West Wing of the White House, instead of the East Wing, where the First Ladies traditionally set up shop. Kimora Lee Simmons, made her real estate agent find a new Los Angeles home in 3 days. Mostly, I want to reward my friends and family and bumrush my enemies. Maybe pull an Oprah or two, and start a school for young urban girls of color. There is an organization called Girls For A Change that I would LOVED to be a part of.

I grew up being told I couldn't have what I wanted.I wanted to go to a perfoming arts high school. I wanted to spend more time with my Mom. I wanted to be seen as special. I wanted to spend my summers in Boston with my friends, not in Backwoods, Georgia with my family. All of the reasons given to me as to why I couldn't have these things were lame. Regardless of what anyone actually said, what I heard was, "Just because".

ME: But why?
they: It's just gonna have to be this/that way.
ME: How come?
they: Don't know. Just because.
ME: Well, that doesn't make anysense.
they: (some other lie)
ME: Can't something be done?
they: (responding in anger)

Of course, if you are continually told lies, you start to believe them. Which I did. Until now. Today, I want the biggest and the best, no matter how crazy it sounds. As for the "VOICES OF NEGATIVITY", they still try to whisper in my ear now and again, but I ain't tryin' to hear that shiznickle.

ME: I want the Porsche Cayenne!!! It is my dream car.
they: You don't have any money.
ME: My cash is on its way. I'll have it very soon.
they: You can't drive.
ME: I will pay for lessons. I want a beautiful home in Lake Las Vegas.
they: You have bad credit. You don't have a credit card.
ME: I'm doing my own credit repair.
they: The house has already been sold.
ME: I'll make them an offer they can't refuse. I'll have over $15,000,000 to spend on a home by then.
they: Where from? You only make about $200 a week!
ME: It's on its way. Just like the awesome man I'm gonna marry.
they: Nobody worth anything wants you. You're not good enough.
ME: I'm everything he wants and more.

Now, I want to make something VERY clear!!! This isn't just fantasizing. I ain't daydreaming. This about visualizing, putting a plan into action, remaining unstoppable and focused, and achieving a goal. My fellow Koloured Grrls, PICK SOMETHING BIG AND THEN GO AFTER IT AS IF YOUR ABILITY TO BREATHE DEPENDED ON IT!! I'll talk more in detail about the actions I'm taking to have what I want in the future. Next time, I'll be chatting about the 3 ELEMENTS OF MOTIVATION.

Damn, Y'all!!! How Does A Koloured Grrl Begin?

As I approach my 37th B-Day, I've been thinking alot about where I'm going, how my ass is going to get there, how I want to share my success, and how to tell the story. Be it that my success story is still unwritten, I've decided to share with my Koloured Sistas (the rest of you folks can pay attention too, I guess) the details of my path. I may make mistakes, become unneccessarily insecure, or verbally beat down a mickey-fickey or two...yet, I STILL plan to get to where I want to be.
Let me start off by defining what a Koloured Grrl is. I kind of borrowed the term from the riot grrl movement, a indie/punk femenist movement. These chicks created everything from fanzines and festivals to collectives and networks. Bands like L7 or Bikini Kill were considered riot grrls. My idea of a Koloured Grrl is an urban minded female of any ethnicity or sexual orientation who is educated, fashionable, sexy, politically aware, ambitious, and a firm believer that changing the world starts from within. For example, Shasta, a Brooklyn born,Chinese-Jamaican graphic design student, loves hip-hop but doesn't always like the way women are portrayed in the music or videos. So, instead of just complaining about it, she'll purchases CD's from Common,Lupe Fiasco, and other similar artists and downloads 50 Cent for free on Limewire(cuz that joint with Timberlake is alright). Then, Shasta uses her big mouth for something other than cussin' out her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend; she convinces 12 girlfriends and 5 of he guyfriends not only to do the same, but to buy tickets to the shows. Shasta has more power than she thinks she does. So do I.
With this blog, I plan to chat about everything from my career, love life, and family, to The Secret and the Laws of Attraction. Other tools also, like books, podcasts, meditaions, and exercise. I am open to talk about about anything, just ask. Sometimes, as women of color, we need a bit of extra support. It's best that we do it together
