My least favorite new feature of OS X Lion is its AutoSave functionality — most especially with two apps I took advantage of all the time under Snow Leopard: Preview and TextEdit.

Well, after having my documents, PDFs, and images helpfully overwritten by Lion one too many times, I decided to see if I could get Snow Leopard’s TextEdit and Preview working under Lion.

This How To is the result of that experiment.

But first, a Word of Caution:

This is an experiment. From my testing so far, it seems to work pretty darned well; however, even though I’ve successfully replaced Lion’s included utilities with little incident, these steps may, at best, break some core functionality of other apps you depend upon every day.

Then again, it may very well reduce your Lion-running Mac to a mass of molten aluminum and glass.

In other words, your mileage may vary.

So, even though reverting to the Lion editions of these apps is quite easy (see below), please be extra sure you’ve got a good backup (or two) on hand before proceeding so if things should go horribly and inextricably awry, you can easily restore things to normal should you need to.

Now that you’ve been duly warned, here are the steps for running the Snow Leopard editions of Preview and TextEdit on your Mac:

1) You’ll need access to a Mac running a fully updated and patched installation of Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

If you no longer have a Snow Leopard-running Mac of your own, you might borrow a few minutes on a friend’s Mac, or restore the files mentioned below from an old backup, but please be sure you’re properly licensed to use these files and that you only use trusted sources to locate them. In other words, don’t look for or download any of these files from the open Internet.

2) Copy the following folder and apps from the Snow Leopard Mac to the Desktop (or other temporary folder) of your Lion Mac:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MeshKit.framework

Preview.app

TextEdit.app

3) Rename Snow Leopard’s Preview.app (now on your Desktop) to PreviewSL.app

4) Rename Snow Leopard’s TextEdit.app to TextEditSL.app

The reason we’re renaming these apps rather than outright replacing the Lion editions is because the next time you update Lion (for example, to 10.7.3), your carefully restored editions of these apps would overwritten.

5) Copy Snow Leopard’s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MeshKit.framework from your Desktop to Lion’s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks folder.

I found no Lion equivalent of this folder on either of my Lion-running Macs, so this should be a straight-forward copy with nothing overwritten in the process. This folder may get deleted again the next time you upgrade Lion.

6) Copy PreviewSL.app from your Desktop to Lion’s Applications folder.

7) Copy TextEditSL.app from your Desktop to Lion’s Applications folder.

And you’re done!

You can now use the newly restored Snow Leopard editions of Preview and TextEdit to open your documents, PDFs, and images.

Finally, if you’d like to associate your documents with the Snow Leopard editions of the apps (in my case, I wanted Plain Text, PDF, JPG and PNG images associated with the apps), simply Control Click (right-click) one of the file types, select Get Info from the Context Menu, in the Open With section choose the “SL” edition of the app, and then click Change All.

UPDATE 11/26/11: It seems associating documents with the old editions doesn’t work quite as well as it first appeared. Please see note below for more on this.

Restoring Lion Editions

Now how about if you’d like to put things back the way they were?

Easy. Delete the following files:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MeshKit.framework

PreviewSL.app

TextEditSL.app

Then re-associate your files with the Lion editions.

If you have any questions or comments about this How To, please write to me or leave your comments below.

11.26.11: A Listener’s Follow-up Note on File Associations

George had issues getting Lion to associate his documents with the renamed Snow Leopard editions of Preview and TextEdit. Well, I apparently didn’t do enough testing, because it looks as if I’m having the same issue. However, Open With off the context menu continues to work fine.

That said, George’s solution to the file association problem is below. Again, keep in mind that even though George takes the extra step of archiving the Lion versions before deleting them, these steps are for those who like to experiment with their Macs, and that a good backup and/or clone of your Lion-running Mac is always a good idea before undertaking a procedure such as this.

Finally, as I mentioned above, outright replacement of Lion’s Preview and TextEdit will likely mean following these steps again after the next major update to your Mac is installed.

George wrote:

I couldn’t get my computer to let me reassign the new (old) versions as the defaults, or even to rename them. I did keep them from working by entering their packages and renaming the Unix Executables, but that was a less than desirable workflow since clicking a file brought up a message that the App was corrupted or missing, and I then had to explicitly open the file in the new (old) versions. Nor would Lion let me rename or move the old (Lion) Apps.

Reggie Ashworth’s AppDelete to the rescue. After zipping Preview and TextEdit, and moving the Zips to a folder in Documents, I then AppDeleted them. I moved the AppDelete Trashes Folders from the Trash, into my Documents folder, renamed PreviewSL and TextEditSL to just Preview and TextEdit, and they now function as they should, opening files associated with the apps.

I did a hard reboot to be sure Lion wouldn’t restore the deleted versions from a System Folder and, at least on that reboot, all stayed as I wanted.

Despite apparently lifting restrictions on running client editions of OS X under the new VMware Fusion 4.1 and placing the onus of compliance upon the end-user (see screen shot below), VMware has now backtracked and announced that the ability to virtualize OS X clients as discovered by Macworld’s Jason Snell was “a mistake”.

VMware's Original Statement Regarding OS X Client Virtualization Discovered by Macworld

Today VMware announced this “mistake” would be rectified in a forthcoming patch. (If you ask me, it sounds more like Apple dropped the hammer on VMware.)

Of course that doesn’t mean you can’t go and download the 4.1 update now to enjoy OS X client virtualization until the patch is released…and then who says you need to apply the patch when it’s ready?

VMware’s announcement follows:

VMware Fusion 4.1 was released late last week and includes many great improvements. One change was the introduction of a new license verification step for users to verify they are in compliance with the OS licensing terms.

When the license verification step was added in VMware Fusion 4.1 the server edition check was omitted. We are preparing an update.

Running Mac OS X client in a virtual machine continues to require Lion (purchased from the Mac App Store or a USB thumb drive.) Users should always ensure they remain in compliance with any applicable software license agreements.

There’s no way I can be as eloquent as the man himself. So instead of trying to express what he meant to me, I will just remind you to listen (if you haven’t already) to Steve’s own words and be inspired and touched by him again.

Thank you Mr. Steve Jobs for changing the world. Standing Ovation… for a long, long, long time.

When I flew home last night and turned on my phone upon landing at O’Hare, I was unfortunately greeted with the news of Steve’s passing. Obviously I was shocked and saddened. As my own little tribute, I wore my Apple shirt today to work. Lots of people came up to me to talk about Steve Jobs (it’s kind of weird as I’m the center of all things Apple here). Everyone was extremely gracious. It was odd but cool that people wanted to share their thoughts about Steve and Apple.

The other thought I had was about the Apple community. While many of us have worked in the tech field one way or the other for many years, I think we’d all agree that the community Steve/Apple created is unlike any other. I’ve gone to Microsoft conferences and other companies functions, but none that sparked the friendship and relationships that Apple conferences, training, Macworld, etc. create.

I’ve met people from all over the world at these events and we continue to communicate regularly. I’ve traveled to ‘tweetups’ and had amazing times. I’ve met and become friends with podcasters — even meeting one who lives about an hour north who was gracious enough to let me be part of his “insanely great” show.

With the release of Mac OS X Lion, many of the fundamental Macintosh concepts to which we have grown accustomed began to change. We were released from the heavy burden of having to click ‘Save’ periodically (in some apps at least), with Auto-Save and Versions. We welcomed in Launchpad, the iOS-inspired way of firing up our favourite apps. We even had the scroll direction reversed.

In the first few days of using Lion full-time, I found myself struggling with some of these changes. It took some time re-learning which way to swipe my fingers to move down a document, and I often found myself puzzled by some of the dialogue boxes inviting me to ‘Unlock’ or ‘Duplicate’ my files.

Several months into using Lion, have things got easier? How has the transition gone?

Auto-Save and Versions

Initially, one of the most disturbing things about Lion was how much something as rudimentary as saving our documents had changed.

There are certainly disadvantages. Our very own Mike has had frustrations with trying to resize an image temporarily in Preview. Auto Save makes it difficult to make a change you don’t actually want to keep, where before you could simply answer ‘Don’t Save’ upon closing the document. In addition, doing a relatively simple ‘Save As’ command now requires multiple steps — a ‘Duplicate’, opening a brand new window, then a ‘Save’ on the new document. It is arguably more fiddly for some common tasks.

The inconsistency makes Auto Save difficult to work with too. You have to remember two different ways of working — the traditional ‘Save’ mentality and the new Auto-Save workflow — because only some applications fully support the new features. This perhaps isn’t Apple’s fault; it is reliant on third-party developers to update their applications, but it nevertheless means that we are still in the awkward transitional stage for this feature.

Despite this, I have found myself starting to get used to Auto-Save, in supported applications. It isn’t natural yet, I certainly wouldn’t call it ‘intuitive’, but I am not thinking about it quite so much when getting work done. Placing the trust that your work is being kept safe automatically is a leap of faith. Getting used to the new dialogue boxes and new concepts takes some time too.

It’s a medium-term project, but I’m getting there and it’s getting there.

Scroll Direction

The changing of the scroll direction caused a lot of pre-Lion anxiety, but I actually found this transition one of the easiest.

Largely, it took me only a few hours of working with Lion to re-learn. For perhaps a week after that, I would come back to the computer after a break, forget, and scroll the wrong way, but it would be quickly corrected.

Now, the new scroll direction feels completely natural to me, and it’s nice to have parity with iOS scrolling too. I found myself, much more quickly than I had anticipated, ‘at one’ with this change.

Launchpad

Launchpad is another way to launch apps. There’s no real requirement to use it if you’re already comfortable starting programs another way, but it is there if you do like it.

I haven’t made this transition. I don’t use Launchpad at all and I don’t find it useful.

I have no doubt that for many users, it makes a lot of sense and simplifies launching applications. It is just not for me.

What I will say about Launchpad is that the tiled icons and grouped folders remind me of something else entirely: Program Manager in Windows 3.1, circa 1992. Go on, tell me there isn’t any resemblance:

Mission Control

Mission Control brought together Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces and the new full-screen application support into one interface. As a user of Exposé and someone particularly enthusiastic about Spaces, I was concerned Mission Control might break the way I liked to do things.

My concerns were not entirely unfounded.

Under Leopard and Snow Leopard, I had four Spaces, consisting of two columns and two rows. Mission Control throws out the two-dimensional aspect of Spaces entirely — you can only have your Spaces in one row.

I have had to change the way I work. I now have my four Spaces in a row, sandwiched between Dashboard on the left and any full-screen apps I have open on the right. At times, especially when some of those Spaces aren’t being used, I find that the full-screen apps are a few swipes away, which slows things down more than it needs to.

I like Mission Control’s birds-eye view perspective, and the fact that the Exposé features and a quick view of what’s happening on other Spaces are available in one place. I did very much like the two dimensional Spaces, but the new way of doing things is an acceptable compromise. There’s enough about Mission Control that I find really useful that I will forgive it for being a bit ’1-D’.

What Do You Think?

Have I got to grips with Lion and the changes it has required of me? Yes. I think so.

Not everything feels right, not everything is exactly how I would want it to be, but as a productive operating system in which I can get things done, it works.

Over time, as more third-party applications get to take full advantage of Lion’s features, I think it will become more and more capable. Perhaps we should expect an inconvenient, and at times frustrating, interim period.

So now I throw it over to you:

What do you think of Lion’s changes? How are you finding it? Was it an immediate success, or is there still some way to go? Did you hate it so much you went back to Snow Leopard? Please do leave a comment to share your views on Lion and the changes it brought with it.

Few would that disagree that Apple retail stores seem to inspire enthusiasm few other retail outlets can. I don’t know if it is the Apple brand itself, the beautiful design and attention to detail of the stores, or just the free WiFi, but I have never yet been able to pay a visit to an empty Apple Store!

A new store opening is a particularly special occasion. I was lucky enough to go to the opening of the WestQuay store in Southampton, UK, back in 2007 — but this time, it was the turn of the new Festival Place store in Basingstoke, UK.

This new store is particularly convenient for me, being only a 20 minute train ride away. The peace of mind one gets from knowing that knowledgeable people and repairs are easy to access is particularly important. This is perhaps one of the things that sets the Apple retail store concept apart from other tech retailers — it genuinely is not just about making the sale, it’s about the whole experience, including sales, supporting new and old users, training, learning and repair.

The Grand Opening Experience

So, what is the experience of an Apple Store ‘Grand Opening’ like?

Well, there is usually a fair bit of waiting in line (or ‘queueing’, as we Brits prefer to say) involved. Curiously, the queue for the Festival Place store was actually more modest than for the smaller WestQuay store. Also, back in 2007, there was free food and drink handed out to those waiting to get in — this time the local coffee shop was taking orders and money!

Gratis grub aside, expect loud enthusiasm from the staff on Opening Day — cheering, whooping and high-fives, doing the Wave and chanting. It’s all good natured fun, and it creates a pretty special atmosphere, but I personally do draw the line at joining in with the chanting of “Apple”, “Apple”, “Apple”!

Eventually, you’ll be directed, in an orderly fashion, into the rather busy and loud store to have a look around. While I don’t think the Genius Bar will do repairs on launch day, you are free to browse — and of course make purchases too. I found the staff at both events friendly and helpful, and I wasn’t made to feel under pressure to leave quickly or make a purchase, despite the large number of people still queueing for a chance to get in. I felt quite free to look around at leisure and soak up the experience of the new store. Even at a busy opening event like this, my experience of the staff and the interactions I had with them was still very good.

It is certainly, as I say, a unique retail experience and one that’s probably worth taking the time to do if you’re an Apple faithful and you have a store opening soon nearby. There will be lots of like-minded Apple folk in line for the adventure.

I shot a little bit of video from the Festival Place Grand Opening, which you can view on YouTube.

To conclude, an observation on the new store. With the advent of the Mac App Store, the writing has been on the wall for boxed software on the Mac — at least the stuff stocked on the shelves in Apple Stores, that is. So, it seemed slightly puzzling that this brand new store had a relatively sizeable section devoted to just that — boxed software for the Mac. How quaint.
