Dr. Pitcairn has one of the best dog food recipe books available today. This is the ultimate explanation of your dog's needs nutritionally with examples of recipes.

Recipes are given for all different weights and ages of dogs.

For example a 15 pound dog has a different nutritional need than and large 80 pound dog, with different levels of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.

Also given in this book are the vitamins, minerals and supplements needed on a daily basis.

This is a comprehensive book about homemade dog food and if you are considering switching over for the health of your dog, it is a must read.

Meat and Rice DOG FOOD RECIPE (Make 4 portions for a 20 pound dog @ 2 servings daily)

2 cups cooked rice

2 1/2 cups minced cooked lean meat

1 1/4 cups pureed veggie and fuit mix

1 1/2 tablespoon canola oil

1/4 tsp. iodized salt

Precook rice, meat and make a veggie/fruit mix ahead of time

Use any lean meat such as chicken, turkey, venison, lamb, beef. Remove fat.

Use brown or white rice (or subsitute cooked macaroni potatoes)

For the fruit/veggie puree I usually stick with the favourite of carrots and apples.

I mix 3/4 vegetables to 1/4 fruit. Cook fruit, cool and puree in food processor.

Mix meat, veggie/fruit puree, starch and salt together, drizzle with oil and serve.

Separate into 4 equal servings and feed 2 servings per day. (This equals 2 days worth of food.)

Make bigger batches when you have the time and freeze in portions for easy meal time

Dog Vitamins And Supplements: Adding vitamins and supplements to our home made dog food is essential as the food will be deficient of certain necessary vitamins and minerals for optimum health.

Bone meal (Calcium) is essential to a homemade dog food diet. Dogs calcium requirements are given according to body weight. The calcium is to replace bones that wild dogs originally ate when feeding in the wild.

This necessary addition can be found in human grade bonemeal, which is available through pet supply stores, health-food stores and of course speciality on line pet stores.

Make sure you NEVER use the garden grade bone meal as this contains toxins, such as lead.

CANINE CANCER is the number one non accidental killer of our beloved companions. Our dogs, and other pets with cancer are dying needlessly, when there are some simple tips to follow to help avoid getting this horrible killer disease in the first place.

By eliminating chemicals from our homes and gardens you can reduce the chance of your dog getting cancer. This alone seems to me to be such a simple tip, but I really didn't think much about fertilizing my lawn every year.

Absorption through the pads of your dogs feet over years of walking on regularly fertilized grass will increase their chance of getting canine cancer immensely.

Just by eliminating using fertilizers and toxic chemicals and switching to a more natural organic way of gardening will give you and your dog a better chance of living a longer healthier life.

Also inside chemicals being eliminated (such a the many toxic cleaning products) and using a more natural approach will also improve you and your pet's chance for longevity.

The most surprising fact about the causes of canine cancer that I have been reading and learning about is that Commercial dog food is the number one cause.

It is only common sense I guess when all the facts are put together and you find out about the horrible practices of the commercial dog food companies and what they really put into their products. Although these practices have recently come to the attention of all of us through news after the dog food industries tainted dog food recall, we must realize that things have not really changed.

Here are some of the ingredients to avoid when buying dog food.

This is my Golden Labrador Retreiver, Lola. There is nothing more gratifying than having my vet ask me what I am doing to make her so healthy. He noticed her skin, coat, teeth and overall health was superior. I felt like a proud parent, and told him I fed her a homemade natural dog diet.

If you are one of those pet parents who give their dog's the best of everthing, then this is really something you should look into trying. By eliminating preservatives, chemicals and additives you will soon see a different dog.

This is a proven fact - the same as with us. Eliminating junk food from our diets will increase our health. The same is true for our dogs. There are so many unnecessary and harmful ingredients in commercial dog food, escpecially the cheaper brands. The only way to know for sure what your dog is eating is to prepare the dog food for yourself.

It will ultimately be cheaper, and by making batches once or twice weekly and storing the food in serving size portions it soon becomes an easy way to feed your pet. The recipes here have been carefully put together with each meal giving your dog the perfect amount of every essential need for his daily diet.

This is my old girl Lady, who had many problems when she was eating commercial dog food. She had horrible dog food allergies, which completely disappeared.

Dogs have only a few ways to let us know what they are feeling. By understanding these actions, it will enable us to know when something is wrong with your dog, or they are happy and carefree.

Most devoted dog owners can immediately tell what their dogs are feeling by different body language signals. Most dogs have similar and repetitious signals that are generally easy for someone who understands their dog, and in turn this will then help understand if you are meeting a friendly dog on the street, or in a dog park, or a potential enemy.

If you are not sure of what a dog is saying check out these few different examples of my two Labs, Lady and Lola.

These are just generalities, but will help in beginning to undertstand your dogs body language.

Here is one of my favorite:

A Submissive Dog

Usually a dog that lies on it’s back, exposing it’s belly is showing submission, not cowardice. This way the dog gives you the power of pack leader and he can relax and enjoy his life of belly scratches, walks, getting a regular meal and playing. These dogs aren’t looking for a fight, and are usually laid back and relaxed pets. This type of personality makes a good family member. As long as there are no other symptoms to go along with this behavior that would indicate the dog shows obsessive behavior along with this submissive body language, or is so timid that is hides all the time and is truly a “scaredy dog”.

There are always many variables within each type of body language that will give further clues as to what is relaxed submissive, fear submission.

I had a sweet, sweet beagle named Susie that was so submissive and afraid of everything that it took over one year just for her to trust me enough to approach me. She stayed mostly under the bed and I was always hunting around the house for her.

She had been abused when I got her at the age of 6 months. It took a lot of quiet patience and work but she turned into a wonderful pet and she was with me for 10 years before she died of cancer.

Obviously these few examples above of “dog body language” are just that – a few. This dog body language is genetically passed on from wild ancestors. Learning to read the different variations within your dog’s body language makes living together a very rewarding endeavor.
Have you ever noticed your dog loves almost everything you want to do with him? There is one time that most dogs do not want to be noticed by you, and that is when they need a bath. Suddenly your sweet, easy going happy puppy turns into a big baby. Here are a few bath time tips to try and make it less stressful

WHEN

Common sense helps in deciding if a bath is necessary. If he is covered in muck and mud, or smells like something is rotten, then the time is now.

Basically a minimum of 3 or 4 baths a year for a clean, indoor apartment dwelling dog is sufficient. Obviously many more baths are needed for your outdoor, active or working dog.

To remove dead hair, mats, and dirt, and distribute your dog's natural oils, you should brush him regularly. This alone helps decrease the amount of dog baths necessary. A good brush, appropriate for your dog's size and fur type, will give you and your pet a special time of bonding, and he will be so ecstatic and much more appreciative of time spent together. Dog's will always prefer this over a bath anytime

WHERE

Do not bathe your dog outdoors in cold winter climates.

Choose the right size of tub, basin or sink to bath your dog in, depending on the size of your pet. Buy an appropriate dog shampoo at a pet store that is targeted towards your dog's fur type. Don't let a wet dog go out doors in cold, frigid weather. The dog must be completely dry, especially down to the undercoat, that some dogs have.

If you live in a warm climate, you can bath your dog outside and after a good shake, they will lounge around in the warm sun and dry naturally. They can run and shake, and take a nice warm sun bath.

HOW

Make sure your dog's coat is combed and all the mats and knots are removed. These will only become more difficult to remove after they are wet. Also, make sure that you have a calm environment for bath time. You don't want the kid's fighting and crying, stress from yourself and a rushed, hurried attitude. Most dogs don't enjoy baths, but will tolerate them if you are relaxed and gentle.

Here is Lady getting her bath. Make sure if using the tub that your have a non slip mat down so your dog feels secure.

I use a shower head and long hose that is just perfect so my labs can stand up and I am comfortable also. If you don't have this, use a large pitcher (plastic) to wet and rinse with. Wash the face first with a wet cloth, without soap. Some people put cotton balls in the ears for protection, and if it makes you more comfortable, do so. Just don't forget to take them out after.

When you are finished the bath, the inevitable shaking will begin. If you are quick on the draw you can get a dry, clean towel over you dog to absorb some of the water before you get a bath also. It is inevitable that your will get wet anyway. Using old clean towels, that are used specifically for clean ups and your dogs messes, dry the fur as much as possible. Most dogs love the rub down after the bath much more than the actual bath.

Some dogs enjoy getting blow dried after their baths, but if you do this, make sure you use the warm setting, not hot. To prevent a hot spot on your dog's skin, you must keep the dryer moving at all times. When you bring your puppy home, giving him a bath regularly when he is little will help make this just another routine in his life, rather than something that is scary. To prevent a stressful nervous dog, you should be relaxed and in a good mood before starting bath time, as most dogs feel our bad or unhappy feelings
Here are my two special girls communicating to me with their eyes. They are telling me that I am the love of their lives, with those adoring eyes. How can anyone not love dogs?

Walking in your house from hectic day of work should be a relaxing and tension free moment. You expect peace and quiet, and a nice welcome from the family.

As soon as you open the door you hear the high-pitched voice of your wife as she is scolding your ten-year-old son, while his little sister is sobbing because he broke one of her new dolls.

The television is loud and your Mother-in-law is chatting on the phone...

So who is the loving one that meets you at the door?

"Sammy" does, your three-year-old mongrel dog.

He's wagging and wiggling from his head to the tip of his tail. In his happy loving way, he wiggles, he licks you and dances around your feet. He's glad to see you. Your dog has expressed himself in the language that he knows you understand.

Your dog, like pet dogs all over the world, use body language and a variety of vocal sounds to communicate with his owner. The dog possesses an incredible ability to communicate with his owner: a universal language, telling man of danger, desire, loyalty and love.

Your dog talks to tell you how sad he is when he's scolded. He shouts loud and clear his distress when a stranger or something unusual approaches, and he talks to you about how happy he is to be near you and share your companionship.

Your dog's tail action is his best way of communicating. Cowering is a sign of submission. An example of this is when your special four legged friend has such a wonderful time ripping your daily paper to shreds while you are out for a bit. When you return the tone of your voice tells him he was wrong, and he knows it by cowering to show you he is sorry through submission. In the wild, dogs will tuck their tails to hide their scent from a potential enemy which will protect them from being discovered. Thus our family pet also tucks his tail to "hide himself". This language seems to go back to the ancient wild dog when submissiveness and dominance existed in the pack.

Subservience is shown by dropping the tail around a dominant dog. This is his way of saying you are the leader. Today, the domesticated dog is saying, "I feel terrible about what happened."

In contrast to the submissive tail movement, there is that happy, excited tail-wagging that states how much your dog wants to please you. Here is a perfect example of how one dog was insistent on showing his owner his communication skills though action:

Max, a Collie, did his doggiest best to please his young owner while she was preparing for her wedding. Max had watched Angelica opening her wedding gifts the week before the ceremony. One afternoon, the Collie proceeded to provide a gift for Angelica...

He yanked a brocade pillow from a neighbor's clothesline and brought it home. After retrieving the pillow he brings it back and drops it for Angelica, right at her feet. Vigorous upright tail wagging shows Angelica that he thinks he has proven his ultimate love and devotion by sharing her joy at receiving presents.

As you can see from this wonderfully heartwarming example of this Collie's desire to communicate pleasure, dogs
Oh My - What do we have here? A nice muddy puddle of water. How much fun is this. I love blowing bubbles with my nose and cooling off in this nice bath Mommy made for me.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273101763798039634"

What? I didn't do it, really really I didn't. Somehow the water just jumped up and enveloped me, mud and all. I was just sitting here minding my own business, being the perfect pup I always am.

Here are my Lady and Lola relaxing on the back deck in beautiful summer time.

Click Here for the most comprehensive book about pet care.

What really is used as fillers in cheap dog food?

Fillers are only used for one reason, and that is money saving for the cheap dog food manufacturers, not in any way is it considered a benefit to the nutritional value of the dog's food. Included are products that are not edible and difficult for our pets to digest such as: cereal byproducts, - cottonseed hulls, - crushed peanut shells, - straw, - corn and crushed corncobs, - weeds, and - feathers.

A cheap dog food filled with corn fillers, listed as corn, corn meal, and corn gluten meal should be avoided as this is used as substitute for higher quality animal protein sources.

Fillers that are used are not just tasteless, but actually can hurt your pet as they cause digestive problems and horrible allergies. They can cause digestive problems, allergies, and in immune deficient puppies or older pets can cause severe medical problems. .

What is a by-product?

Found in cheap dog food, meat by-products are euphemisms for parts of animals that wouldn't be considered edible by any smart consumer. Meat by-products actually do not contain meat. By-products are part of the animals that are left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone. Thrown into the cheap dog food stew pot then would be items such as heads, feet, entrails, hoofs, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brains, stomach, bones, blood, intestines and lots of other parts of the carcass not fit for human consumption.

Also, the boiled down flesh of road kill, zoo animals, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled dying) livestock is considered okay with these manufacturers. This also can include dogs and cats that have been euthanized. Avoid dog food with blood meal, which is an inexpensive protein booster. The animal source is usually not stated, and the blood can be contaminated with residues of hormones, or medications.

What is a non-specific meat source?

If the main protein source is listed as "meat" this is to be avoided, It is always mystery meat such as: spoiled rotten meat from the grocery store (Styrofoam wrap and all), - Road kill that has been rotting on the roadside, - heads, feet, skin, hair, feathers, carpel and tarsal joints, and mammary glands are used from the slaughterhouses. Animals that have died from diseases, cancerous tissue and all, - tumors and worm infested organs are also rendered. Injection sites are rendered, blood clots and all. Stomach and unclean bowels are rendered. Contaminated material including blood is rendered. Carcasses with high levels of drugs or pesticides in excess of limits prescribed under the FDA (not fit for human consumption) are rendered.

Everything is pitched into large vats and slowly ground, then cooked at low temps till the grease rises to the top. And consider that this is what is listed on the ingredient list as "animal fat". The rest of what is remaining is then pressed until the moisture is completely removed, and this dry raw material that is referred to as "meat", is then used in the cheap dog food brands.

Why are artificial colors, preservatives and flavors used?

Flavor is added, because most pets wouldn't eat the finished product without some sort of cover up for the horrible smell. These additional flavors are usually from rancid restaurant grease. The used rancid grease is picked up after sitting out in barrels, in the sun for weeks. This is what the pet food manufacturers buy to add as flavoring, which is sprayed onto the kibble. Also sugar or corn syrup is used to cover up the bad taste of the inferior kibble.

Different dyes are used to make the food look good to us, the pet owner. Dyes are known carcenogenic causing additives, and I'm quite certain my pet, or yours, does not care what color their food is.

Artificial preservatives are used to extend the shelf life of the dog food. The main ones to avoid are: BHA (butylated hydroxytolulene), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used in automotive antifreeze, and is suspected of causing red blood cell damage) and ethoxyquin. These are all potentially cancer causing agents that your pets are eating every day.

This all sounds pretty grim, but rest assured there are many extremely excellent, ultra premium organic dog foods now being manufactured without any of the above crap in them. These highly reputable and conscientious companies have philosophies aimed at providing you and your pet the best of the best when it comes to nutrition and peace of mind.

A lot of pet owners are also now making their own best dog food at home, and this is always better than the junk the commercial pet food manufacturers are feeding our pets.

It is easy, and comparable in price to buying the best all natural commercial dog food.

Also readily available on the internet are all sorts of high quality E-Books with recipes and here is a good E-book expanding on the above bad dog food ingredients.

Whatever you choose for your pet, remember we speak for them, and choose the best for them that you are able to give.

Below are just a few of the many incredible benefits of feeding your dog organic food.

• Your dog lives up to 8-years longer (it's been documented!). You get many more happy years of love and enjoyment with your dog. By eliminating chemicals and fillers your dog becomes healthier. Click here for more info on best dog food available today.

• Your dog looks and feels much healthier. Friends and strangers comment on the great health of your dog, and your dog has more bounce and a bigger smile than ever before. My dog's energy levels increased dramatically.

• If you change over to organic dog food, it will be easier for your dog to maintain a perfect, slim and attractive weight. High fat and sugar levels in commercial food are a leading cause for obesity in dogs --- and obesity is the #1 health disorder seen by vets everyday. See why fat dogs are not cute

• Your dog is much less likely to get to ear and skin infections, worms and fleas. Your dog is much more comfortable and you save a fortune on vet bills. Click here

• Your dog's teeth are much cleaner and breath smells much better, so you enjoy being around them more.

• Your dog passes up to 80% less gas, so you can have them in the house or in the car more often without worrying about stinking you out.

• You dog's poo is smaller and has much less stink, so cleaning up after your dog is no longer a revolting 'stomach-turner'.

• Your dog is better behaved (chemicals in dog food are proven to cause behavior problems), making them friendlier and safer around children.

• You save money; it's actually much cheaper in the long run to buy the high quality, ultra premium organic dog foods. Save as much as $1000/year, that's well over $10,000 over the lifetime of a dog that eats healthy organic dog food! See the best dog foods here

• You can add the single most important ingredient that is only possible in home-made food --> Your love!

Okay , I love cats too! I had two and now I have a new cat. The little girl on the left (with me) was dropped off and appeared almost starved when I first saw her two months ago, in August. She weighed only 2 pounds. She in now up to 5 pounds and doing well. She is very shy and stays on her own, but loves being held and petted. Her name is Jinx and I am getting her spayed on Nov.4, 2008. The picture on the right is my old Tomcat, Buddy. Boy - he looks fat and dead here! He is a big boy, and gained weight when I got him neutered last year. I just love this picture of him - he is so laid back. Check out his bio here

How to make the easiest, most delicious, nutritious and organic dog treats, with just one ingredient. By the way - Cute pic of our pug Clyde after digging in the dirt.

Who hasn't come home from the store with new dog treats for your pet to try, without even considering that you are harming your pet's long term, overall health. Then you open the package and it smells horrible. What is that smell? I can smell the chemicals and rancid fat that has been sprayed on some of these treats. I've even had to wash the greasy residue off my hands after handling some of these dog treats. This flavoring is sprayed on to cover up the horrible taste of over processed, preservative filled stuff that shouldn't ever be considered edible.

I have my own dog treat recipes that are natural, healthy, organic and good for your pet. The best homemade dog treat recipes are baked, which eliminates extra unnecessary fat. Using fresh ingredients in your homemade dog treats, and flavors you know your dog loves will make everyone happy and healthy. A tiny bit of fat or sugar might be added to dog treat recipes - after all they are just occasional treats, not their regular daily nutritional meal.

Just as we love the occasional snack food that is perhaps not high in beneficial nutrients, so do out pets. Here is the absolutely best and easiest dog food treat recipe that I have ever found in a book titled COOKING FOR YOUR DOG, by Ingebor Pils, and use all the time for my dogs. I have been making it since I bought the book, and it is always the first to disappear. It is all natural, organic, and good for them. There are obviously no preservatives, fillers, chemicals or any other harmful ingredients that are regularly used by the dog food industry.

This is something we could eat also, if you like beef jerky. It is a one ingredient dog treat recipe, with no muss or fuss in the kitchen. Try it - I guarantee your dog will love it.

BEEF CRUNCHIES

1 lb. (500 g) lean beef

Dice the meat into half-inch cubes.

Place meat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Put into a cold oven and heat to 300 degrees F.

Leave the meat in the oven for 1 hour at 300.

Reduce the oven temperature to 200 degrees F, and prop open the oven door to allow the moisture to escape, for 2 to 3 hours.

Allow the beef crunchies to dry overnight at room temperature.

The crunchies will keep for up to a year in an airtight container in the fridge, - but of course your dog will not allow this.

Everyone has their own mission or passion in life. Mine is saving, protecting and nuturing house pets and also animals in the wild.

My girls are Lady and Lola. They are my two Labrador Retreivers, who have been especially spoiled rotten and treated as though they are family members, and not just an animal.

They are both well behaved, perfect dogs - of course! I have also recently adopted a pug ( Clyde ) who is actually my nephews dog, but they now live with us.

Lola and Lady have adjusted quite well to the new pug, and they seem to have taken on the caregiving and babysitting responsibilities.

I feed my girls and ( Clyde ) all natural organic food for the best health and longest life possible.

They are treated with respect, kindness and given the best that I am able to provide. I realize not everyone wants to make homemade pet food, or doesn't have the time or inclination.

There are alternatives, such a mixing high grade organic dry dog food with some meat cooked and added for extra flavor. Try organic canned dog food as a flavour enhancer.
