Below are a few words that have the common kanji 明 in them. Some are strikingly similar, but with the below explanations, hopefully, you can determine what situations you would use each of them in.

明白（めいはく）：はっきりしていて疑う余地の全くない・こと（さま）。

The other day, I had a hard time breaking down the differences between the following similar 予-words. A lot of them seemed downright the same, but there are subtle difference, which I will try to list. If you know more, please post in the comments sections. Thanks!

予測（よそく）： Project; forecast. Often used with numbers and business.　
ALC hits: 1490

その数字は2倍になると予測されている。
The number is projected to double.

予知（よち）： Predict, foresee. In the sense that psychics can predict the future.

ナマズが地震を予知できるというのは本当ですか？
Is it true that catfish can foresee earthquakes?

予感（よかん）： To have a hunch. Often used in the pattern ～予感がする, which is similar to ～気がする

いいことが起きそうな予感がする
I have a hunch (that) something good is going to happen.

予期（よき）：　Expect, anticipate, assume. Never used with 通り, as in 予想どおり.

誰にも9月11日に起きたことは予期できなかったはずです。

予想（よそう）： Expect, anticipate, predict. Often used in compounds:

身代金（みのしろきん）： Ransom
接種（せっしゅ）： Inoculation
進駐・軍（しんちゅう・ぐん）： Occupation (forces)**
大陸間弾道弾（たいりくかんだんどうだん）： ICBM

*症 or 性 are both used, but according to a Google search, 症 is the more common usage.
**A synonym for this word is 占領（せんりょう）, a term more commonly associated with the U.S. Occupation of Japan.

And a few bonus expressions:

１．キツネ嫁入り（きつねよめいり）： Sun showers
例：　昨日は晴れるだと思ったのに所によってはキツネの嫁入りだ。

2．お払い箱にする・なる（おはらいばこ）： Discard (someone); fire someone ・ be fired

Remembering the end of WWII

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to design pg. 1 of the newspaper. And being the 64th anniversary of the end of World War II, the lede story was pretty much set, making for an easy day.
Remembering the anniversary, or 終戦記念日, were a number of Japanese and politicians and leaders, including Prime Minister Taro Aso and the Emperor and Empress. Other more audacious politicians attended a ritual ceremony commemorating the loss of millions in the war at the controversial Yasukuni Shrine. Here are a few words gleaned from the news reports:

女々しい

For a lot of males living in Japan, speaking like a man can be a difficult barrier to overcome. I'm often criticized for my effeminate （女々しい） way of speaking. Recently, I've made the transition from ending a majority of my statements in よ to ending most of them in ね. Both, it seems, can be heard as feminine ways of speaking depending on their (over)usage, which is usually the case with me. Reining in this overusage can be troublesome, but it is possible. Just remember that you don't want to be thought of as 女々しい, or wimpy.

The other day at work, I had to explain to both a coworker the intricacies of Chiang Kai-shek fleeing the Chinese mainland from Mao Zedong's coming Communist forces, and later the Cultural Revolution in China (大文化革命）. Not knowing how to say their respective names in Japanese, I first tried to katakana-ize them. To no avail. Then, I checked my English-Japanese dictionary. No dice. Finally, I went to old reliable, 広辞苑, my standby in tough situations like this. It turns out a lot of these Chinese names are transliterated in completely different ways than their English counterparts. Some examples:

Mao Zedong ⇒　毛沢東（もうたくとう）
Deng Xiaopeng ⇒　鄧小平（とうしょうへい）
Chiang Kai-shek⇒　蒋介石（しょうかいせき）
Zhou Enlai ⇒　周恩来（しゅうおんらい）

One of the requirements of being a newspaper editor is having a large vocabulary. Japanese, like English, has a variety of synonyms that make acquiring words difficult. Maybe even more difficult than English, given the prevalence of 書き言葉/話し言葉 and other formal and informal speech.

Here are a couple of words commonly used at my workplace, that may help my fellow wordsmiths:

年功序列（ねんこうじょれつ）： Seniority system
暗示する（あんじ）： Imply, connote
簡潔（かんけつ）： Concise
明瞭（めいりょう）： Clear, articulate
相次いで（あいついで）： Successive; a string of; one after the other
次から次へ: One after the other; in waves

Good news...I guess. Levels 1 and 2 of the JLPT is now being offered in the summer time, as well as in the winter. I picked up my application the other day for the 1st level and expect to fail it once again in July. The deadline for applications is May 1, so hurry if you haven't already bought yours and sent it in.

目をつぶる：　欠点、誤りを見逃すこと；見ないふりをする
To overlook something (on purpose)
毎日の電車通勤は大変だけど、最寄駅が始発で座れるから目をつぶる。
My commute to work is long, but I overlook that since my station is at the start of the line and I can get a seat.

目に余る：　ひど過ぎて、見逃せない
To be unable to overlook something
あの子の今度のいたずらは目に余る。厳しく叱らなければ。。。

I've been reviewing my 一級に出る単語集教科書 and I have to say, there are a lot of convenient expressions out there. Unfortunately, I can never seem to remember them at the opportune times.

For me, it's more of a "if I see it, I'll know it, but I can't reproduce it" kinda thing.

But for this week, I've devised a plan to print out copies of the first unit, stick them in places I frequent (i.e., the inside the bathroom door, on my desk at the office), and force myself to use them.

Below are the first week's 慣用表現, or idiomatic expressions. See if you can figure them out just from the kanji.

慣用表現

道草を食う： To linger, loiter on the way to X
例：　帰り道で道草を食うな。
Don't fool around on the way home.

立て板に水： Fluently, smoothly, nonstop
例：　彼は立て板に水を流すようにしゃべった。
He rattled on and on.

寝耳に水： Out of the blue
例:　そのニュースは全く寝耳に水だ。
The news hit me out of the blue.

焼け石に水: Not helpful, a drop in the bucket
例:　ローン地獄で、ボーナスもらっても焼け石に水だよ。
With my loans, even getting a bonus is only a drop in the bucket.

紙一重（かみひとえ）： A fine line, razor thin
例:　夢と現実は紙一重です。
There is a fine line between dreams and reality.

すずめの涙: A trifle, no big deal
例:　雀の涙ほどの給料では何の役にも立たない。
My monthly salary is so small it's totally shit.

猫に小判: Pearls before swine, a waste of resources
例：　彼はいいワインを飲んでも、猫に小判だ。
Even if you give him some good wine, it's like casting pearls before swine.

馬の耳に念仏: In one ear and out the other
例：　あの人に何回も言ったくせに、全く「馬の耳に念仏」だね。
Although I told that guy many times, it just goes in one ear and out the other.

ボーナス表現

五十歩百歩: Scant difference
例：　君たち二人がどちらが背が高いか争っても、Ａ君と比べれば五十歩百歩さ。
Even if you two compare your height, there's only a bit of difference between A.

一杯食わせる： To be duped

ハプニングズ　II:　Hiragana Times 原稿 UPDATE!

As I mentioned last entry, partly on a lark and partly as a means of studying and testing my limits, I am hoping to send The Hiragana Times an article on my work as a journalist in Tokyo. Below is the VERY rough draft, which I quickly wrote over the last two days. To put it mildly, it is 片言 (baby talk) in some places and ちんぷんかんぷん (nonsensical) in others. Also, the last couple of paragraphs are yet to be translated. I　went over with a native speaker, but I am still wondering if it packs the punch it does in English, especially the opening. Take a look and add your comments, if you like. But be warned: It sucks!

Working for an English-language newspaper in Japan

Three minutes before deadline, we’re scrambling, asking the production guys to make last minute tweaks. Copy editors yelling out from across the office, “there’s a spelling mistake on page 1!” Two minutes. A quick run through of the lede story. It looks good, but another editor yells that he has had an epiphany – a really catchy hed for the sidebar story. The slot editor relents. “Do it, fast,” he says. One minute to deadline. “I’m sending ichimen,” the slot yells. “Any objections?” The newsroom is silent, and the page is sent.

締め切り３分前、俺たちは焦りながら製作部に土壇場の変更を頼む。編集者たちは遠くから「一面にスペルの間違いがあるぞ！」と叫んでいる。後2分。間に合わなさそうだ。リード記事に急いで目を通す。間違いがないと思いきや、別の編集者が「今突然ひらめいた！」と叫ぶ。それは見出しに対していい考えだ。部長が「さっそくやれ！」と言う。後1分。｢一面送るぞ！｣と編集長が言う。「他に何かあるか？」ニュース編集室は静かになり、一面は出来上がる。

Could you feel the adrenaline rush? That kind of energy is present almost everyday in the newsroom where I work. And it is something I thrive on. I’m a newspaper man. But not your average journalist. I work for an English language paper in Japan.

Nowadays, I’m very happy to be a part of the media. I work on the foreign news desk, the section responsible for a large chunk of my daily newspaper. And although I don’t write any of the articles, I do a job that many say is just as important as reporters – I make the paper readable. I am a copy editor.

現在、僕はマスメディアに関する仕事に就けてとてもうれしく思っている。会社では外信部に所属。新聞のほとんどはそこで作り出す。自分で記事は全く書かないにもかかわらず、僕の仕事は記者の仕事と同じぐらい大切だと思う。僕の仕事は新聞を読みやすくすることだ。僕は編集者だ。

About a year ago, I took over duties as both a business slot editor and an Asian slot editor. Basically, this means that I sift through an uncountable number of news wire stories, and choose those that are most relevant to our readers. These stories are then sent to other editors on the “rim,” or main copy desk, where they are read for clarity, conciseness, and fact-checked. Then, I will take a look at them again and consult with the editors about headlines. Once that’s done, each is sent to production and put on the page, where we can check the “proof” on paper for any further errors.

約一年前、僕はある意味昇進して、ビジネス編集とともにアジア編集の責任を任された。基本的に言うと、こういう仕事ではニュースワイヤーで夥しい数の記事を読み、面白い記事の中から読者に対して最適な記事を選ぶのだ。その後、リム　(編集部)　で例の記事を送る。そこで、明瞭さ、簡潔さ、さらに事実確認も行う。それからもう一度僕は読み直す。特に見出しについてはリムの編集者と話し合う。一旦終わったら、製作部が原稿に載せ、プルーフ（プリントアウト）を出す。それを再び読み、間違いを探す。

If there are no mistakes, it’s given to the production department, where Japanese is necessary since none of the staffers speak English. From them, I usually pick up a lot of technical Japanese. Most of the words are used throughout the newspaper industry, but would be jargon to most ears. That said, I also learn quite a bit of slang from the “boys in the pit,” who have a habit of cursing at confounded machines!

間違いがなかったら、原稿を製作部に渡す。製作部では一人も英語が話せる人がいないから、日本語の知識は必要だ。実をいうと、製作の人からはたくさんの日本語を学ぶことができる。特に新聞社の専門用語が良く使われている。一般の人には何がなんだか分からない言葉だが、僕にとっては絶好なチャンスだ。その上、古臭い機械にいつもいらいらさせられる「前線のやつ」からも俗語をいっぱい習う！

Finally, once all the kinks are worked out, the page is ready to be sent to the presses.

そうしてすべての問題を処理した原稿はやっと印刷会社に送ることができる。

Working for a paper that is geared mainly toward expats and Japanese readers who want to study English, it is sometimes difficult to juggle my role of finding interesting stories for both audiences. But more often than not, there is a Japan angle to quite a few stories, especially for the business and Asia sections.

この英字新聞は英語を勉強している日本人や国外駐在者向きだから、記事を選択するのは大変だと思う。両者のために面白くて情報にあふれた記事を見つけるのは時々難しい。でも、たいていはビジネス欄やアジア欄に日本的な記事が結構ある。

A typical day at the Asia desk may find me running a stories about North Korea threatening missile launches, China holding bilateral talks with Japan, or U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visit with Prime Minister Taro Aso.

普段、僕はアジア欄に北朝鮮の核問題や、中国政府と日本政府の二国間会議、麻生総理大臣とクリントン米国務長官の首脳についての記事などの編集をしている。

What’s not so typical is our newsroom is that most of the reporters are Japanese who speak near flawless English. From the desk chiefs to the lowly copy editors such as myself, English is the language we most often communicate in. So at work, since we speak mostly English, I relish any chances to improve my Japanese.

他はニュース編集室での仕事だ。そこではほとんどの日本人記者は英語がうまく話せる。僕も含めて、編集長、他の社員たち、みんなほとんどは英語で話す。そのせいもあって、職場では日本語を話す機会が少ない。だから、日本語を上達する機会があれば喜んで取り組む。

ハプニングズ Weird experiences

I've decided to undertake a new challenge in my quest to conquer the Japanese language: to write an article in 日本語. I've been in contact with the monthly Hiragana Times about writing in their "Japan through foreigners' eyes" section. They asked me to send something through, so what I'm going to do is write it first in English (they need both) and then do my best to translate it.

Basically, I'll be writing about a typical day working for an English newspaper in Japan. I'll keep ya'all posted with the 原稿 as it progresses. I'm setting a deadline for next Tuesday, March 24.

2級 Grammar review

This time, I'll be discussing the つつ's. This is one of those 2級 grammar points that has multiple meanings that are, at first glance, easy to confuse. The thing is, they're really different.

Let's start with this one:　つつある

In the middle of doing .../ continuing to...

This formal expression is rarely used in conversation and shows some that something is in the process of progressing.

-masu形 + つつある

教科書の例：　最近、田舎がどんどん都会化しつつある
男らしいの例：　私は影響されていないけれども、世界経済はますます悪化しつつあるようだ。

The next つつ, without the ある, means basically the same thing as ながら -- "while."

Aつつ,B : A and B are done simultaneously.

This expression is a bit rigid and bookish. ながら is the more conversational of the two.

-masu形 + つつ

教科書の例：　私は父の無事を祈りつつ病院に急いだ。
男らしいの例：　勉強しつつアメリカンアイドルを見ようとしていた。

Finally, there is one more variation of つつ, this one often featuring も after this つつ.
This one is similar to ながら, again, in that it means "although" or "in spite of."　It is used to describe how one can feel bad about something. Quite often, you'll see it paired with 　知る and 思う, i.e. 知りつつ and 思いつつ

教科書の例：　運動不足は体に悪いと知りつつ、時間がなくて運動ができない。
男らしいの例：　この記入を書くのはすごく時間がかかると知りつつ、書いてからこれ以上に何もできなくなった。
