The Kurichyar is the most developed among them. They are small land owners, whereas the members of other tribes are mostly labourers. Wayanad district stands first in the case of adivasi population (about 36%) among other districts in the state.

Wayanad has a large settler population. There are people from almost all parts of Kerala who migrated to this fertile land for building up their lives. Wayanad has a small jain community consisting of Gowders who came from Karnataka. They have built beautiful temples all over the district. Almost all sections of Christianity are well represented. One fourth population of Wayanad is constituted by Christians. Muslims constitute another one fourth population and rest of the population belongs to Hindus. Their hard work and sacrifice helped them to prosper.

HOW TO REACH WAYANAD

How to Reach Wayanad by Air: Calicut International Airport, located around 65 km and Mysore Airport located around 87 Km away serves as the nearest airport to Wayanad. Visitors can avail direct or stopover flights till Calicut from different parts of Kerala as well as rest of India, depending upon availability. On arrival at the airport, local taxis can be availed to travel till Wayanad.

How to Reach Wayanad by Road: A wide network of roads provide access to Wayanad from different parts of Kerala as well as Karnataka. Visitors can board KSRTC buses that run up to Kozhikode at frequent intervals from nearby cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Chennai and Trivandrum. Buses till Wayanad are also available.

How to Reach Wayanad by Rail: Wayanad district is not connected directly by rail. Visitors can take a train till Kozhikode, the nearest railway station to Wayanad. Quite a number of trains connect Kozhikode with major towns and cities on a regular basis. After getting down at the station, taxis or buses can be boarded to travel to Wayanad.

PLACE TO VISIT IN WAYANAD

CHEMBRA PEAK - KALPETTA

If you are an admirer of soothing natural beauty and if you love to have an adventure trip, then Chembra Peak in Wayanad, will be a perfect stop for you. Eight kilometer south of Kalpetta, near to the town of Meppady, lays the highest peak in Wayanad, the Chembra Peak (2,100 m). Chembra peak adjoins Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. From the town of Meppady you can reach the peak through walking.

The peak is visible from almost all parts of Wayanad. This place is an ideal destination for trekking activities. You have to take prior permission from the Meppady forest office before going for a trek at Chembra Peak. The forest office will be open on all days. Overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra peak as there is a threat from lurking wild animals.

It will take at least three hours to reach the top point of Chembra peak. On the way to this peak, you can sight a heart shaped lake, which is said to have never dried up. It is one of the topmost attractions of this peak. This lake is known as 'hridhayathadakam'.

From the top of the peak, you will get wondered by seeing the whole Wayanad. You can also sight Kozhikode, Malappuram and Niligiri districts from here. You will get amazed with the enthralling beauty of the nature here. There are numerous peaks nearby Chambra peak. But it is difficult to climb into those, as they are covered with dense forests. The trekking charges for a group of 10 members to Chembra peak, is Rs.500 and for international tourists the amount is Rs.1000 for a group.

Chembra Peak is worth visiting all year around. But it might be good, if you avoid the place on rainy season, as the descent can be quite slippery during heavy monsoon seasons. There are lots of bus services, both government and private, to reach Chembra. You can get down at Kalpetta and from there to Chembra.

BANASURA SAGAR DAM - KALPETTA

Banasura Sagar dam across the Karamanathodu River, a tributary of River Kabini, in Kalpetta, is considered to be the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam is ideally placed in the foothills of Banasura hills, which got its name from 'Banasura', the son of King Mahabali, the famous ruler of Kerala. It is said that 'Banasura' undertook severe penance on the top of the hills. Banasura hill is the third largest peak in the Western Ghats.

The dam here was constructed on behalf of the Banasurasagar project in 1979, to support the Kakkayam Hydroelectric power project to meet the water demand for irrigation and drinking purposes. The dam, located around 21 km away from Kalpetta is a beautiful tourist destination in Wayanad. Banasura dam is made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders.

One of the beautiful sights here is the set of islands in the dam's reservoir, which was formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas during monsoon season. These islands with the Banasura hills in the background are a visual treat for those who visit the dam and its premises. Because of this peculiarity, tourists are attracted towards this destination. The dam is very close to Karalad Lake, another tourist hotspot in Wayanad.

At Banasura Sagar dam, you can engage yourself in trekking and boating. Trekking is one of the top attractions here. You can plan a trek to the dark forests of Banasura Peak. A boating trip in the lake and the dam is also a unique experience for the travellers. You can choose either speed boat or pedal boat. You can also plan a trip to the small nature park, very near to the boating place. This park with its traditional tree swings will provide cheerful moments for kids. The best season to be at Banasura Sagar dam is from November to May.

KURUVA ISLAND

Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of islands over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island is densely populated with rich flora and fauna. The geographical peculiarity of this island makes this place evergreen with a serene ambience.

Dwelling deep into this island, you can sight many attractive things like bridges made up of bamboo trees and other rare species of trees. The uninhabited island is home to rare species of birds, orchids, herbal plants etc. Coming so much closer to the nature, you might be feeling Kuruva Island as a nature's gift to Wayanad.

The island is surrounded by streams and you can have a boat ride or rafting through this stream enjoying the enchanting beauty of the island. The boats and rafts are provided by the Kerala Tourism Department and it will take few hours to cover each and every island. Tourists from different parts of the world enjoy the rafting here. The rafts are made up of bamboos providing you a thrilling and exciting journey through the streams.

The other thing you can do in this fabulous island is to have a calm and lazy nature walk. Partying and picnic are restricted here as the authorities are maintaining eco-tourism in Kuruva Island. Just enjoy the beauty without spoiling the pristine nature. You can also plan for a trekking in Kuruva Island.

Entry to this island is restricted during rainy seasons (from June to September). The island is opened during the months from October to May and there is a nominal entry fee to the island. The time schedule is from morning 9 to evening 5.

The island is situated 15 km away from Mananthavady, 58 kilometres from Sultanbathery and 40 kms from Kalpetta. There are frequent buses from Manathavady to Kuruva Island.

POOKODE LAKE

The beautiful freshwater lake in Wayanad, Pookode Lake lays 15 kilometre away from Kalpetta. Nestled between evergreen forest and Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acre and is 40 m deep. This is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Wayanad.

While reaching at this gorgeous lake, you will be experiencing a calm and peaceful environment around. The lake is surrounded by forest and you will see green and green all around, making this place an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers. One of the main tributary of Kabini River, the Panamaram rivulet originates from here.

The perennial freshwater lake has the shape of an Indian map. You can sight blue lotus and numerous fresh water fishes. Blue water lilies also can be seen scattered here and there in the water. The sight of wild animals and birds in the surrounding forest of the lake is another attraction of this destination. Plenty of monkeys are also seen here. Pethia Pookodensis is a species of cyprind fish, which is said to be found here only.

There are boating facilities for the tourist in the Pookode Lake. Pedal boats are available. Boating in the lake, viewing the stunning beauty of the lake is a unique experience. You can also make a visit to the nearby freshwater aquarium, children's park and shopping centre exclusively for handiwork and spices. The shopping centres are owned by District Tourism Promotion Council. You can get plenty of things made up of bamboo and coconut husk at this shopping centre.

A visit to this lake at the time of dawn or dusk is always recommended. The lake is maintained by the South Wayanad forest division. There are frequent bus services to this place. The timing is from 9 am to 5 pm.

MUTHANGA WILDLIFE SANCTURY

Located around 16 km away from Sulthan Bathery, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, popularly known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a rainforest wich connects Nagarhole and Bandipur parks in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. Spread over an area of 345 sq km, the sanctuary is an abode of rich flora and fauna.

Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1973, the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary was brought under the Project Elephant in the year 1991-92. It is considered to be the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and bio-geographically one of the richest tracts of peninsular India. Here you can see semi-evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests.

The moist deciduous forest of Muthanga is blessed with varieties of trees and other plants. You can sight here maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal etc. Go and get excited with the sight of wild animal like elephant, tiger, panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs etc. The sanctuary is also blessed with its endless population of birds like peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls etc.

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary consist of four ranges – Sulthan bathery, Kurichyad, Muthanga and Tholpetty, of which Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges are mostly targeted by the tourists’ to Wayanad. They are separated by plantations. These are two eco-tourism centres in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. The eco-tourism in these places helps to create conservation awareness in the minds of the travellers and to well maintain the sanctuary and its premises. The eco-tourism programmes consist of elephant camp visit, jeep safari, trekking, bird watching, tribal folklore etc.

You can make a visit to this wildlife sanctuary from June to October. Frequent buses are available to reach this destination. The other destinations near to Wayanad wildlife sanctuary are Bandipur National park, Mudumalai Elephant Park and Nagarhole Willife Sanctuary.

EDAKKAL CAVES

Twenty five kilometers away from Kalpetta lays two caves which showcases nature’s skill and philosophy on architecture. These caves are located 1,200 m above the sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. Here you can see a cave formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock.

Many legends are there behind the formation of Edakkal caves. One of the stories is that, these caves are said to be formed with the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, the sons of Lord Sri Rama. Another one is associated with Kutti Chathan and the Goddess Mudiampilly. The local people used to have a pilgrimage trip to this place to honour the Goddess.

The caves were discovered by Fred Fawcett, the then Superintendent of Police of the Malabar district in 1890, during his hunting trip to Wayanad. He discovered the Edakkal rock-shelter, situated on the western side of Edakkalmala. To his surprise, he identified the place as a habitat of Neolothic people.

Edakkal caves are famous for its pictorial paintings (cave paintings), which are considered to be of 6000 B C. To reach the caves, one has to trek through the Ambukutty Mala. It will take around 45 minutes to climb the hill and you will never get disappointed in your trip to these historic caves.

Inside the cave, you can see two chambers. The lower chamber is 18 ft long, 12 ft wide and 10 ft high and the upper chamber is 96 ft long, 22 ft wide and 18 ft high. You can sight carvings of human, animal figures and objects used by humans, on the walls of the caves. These carvings give great evidence for a highly civilized society who lived in the pre-historic age. Edakkal caves have drawn great attention of archeologists and historians worldwide.

Edakkal is the only known place in India with Stone Age carvings. You can see here carvings belonging to Neolithic and Mesolithic age. The human figures of these caves have raised hair and some have masks. They all have archeological significance and are interesting too. Along with these pictorial carvings, you can also watch Tamil and Brahmi Script in Edakkal caves.

Edakkal is said to have some links with Indus Valley Civilization too. Around 400 signs were discovered recently, which had shown its relationship with the ancient civilization. The prominent among them was ‘a man with a jar cup’.

The visiting time to Edakkal caves is from morning 9:30 to evening 4:30. You can reach the lower part of the Ambukutty hills via bus or car and from there you have to climb the hills. Till mid way of the hills, you can make use of the jeeps arranged by the DTPC. To enter the caves, you have to give a reasonable entry fee.

LAKKIDI VIEW POINT

Lakkidi is the gateway of Wayanad as it is located at the crest of the serpentine Thamarassery ghat pass. There are nine hairpin curves from Adivaram (Downhill) to Lakkidi through steep mountains and a journey through the serpentine ghat pass is worth an experience. It is about 2296 ft (700 m) above the sea level and the major town nearby is Vythiri which lies five km away.

The lush greenery of the hills, gorges and streams seen on both sides of the passage up the hill are sure to linger in the visitors’ mind for a long time. Tourists often stop by Lakkidi View Point, the vantage point which offers dazzling views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys.

Lakkidi has also emerged as a popular hill destination with many expensive resorts and plantation stays providing stay facility for foreigners and other affluent tourists.

Chain tree: You can see monkeys frolicking through the roadside and once you start travelling through the road to Vythiri, you will see a ficus tree on the left side. You will also notice a heavy chain anchored to the ground and tied around the stout branches of the tree.

There is a legend associated with the chain bound ficus tree. It is said that a British engineer, after many attempts, failed to create a passage through the forests of Wayanad. Then a tribal youth, Karinthandan, guided him in making the route. The engineer was reluctant to share the glory and hence he killed Karinthandan. Local people believe that later the soul of the tribal youth started haunting the travellers on this way and at last a priest chained the spirit to the tree.

MEPPADI AND VADUVANCHAL

Meppadi is situated about 10 km from Kalpetta and it is an important destination in the Kozhikode – Ooty road. A drive from Vythiri to this route will provide you a feel of Wayanad district. The charming Meppadi village with woods, verdant hillsides and coffee, tea, rubber and vanilla plantations are sure to capture your imagination. Vaduvanchal, another breathtakingly beautiful place nearby, too carries all the characteristics of the regions lying in the high ranges of Western Ghats. If you are visiting these places during spring, you may be confronted by an explosion of colours, thanks to the blooming flora of the region.

Vaduvanchal is ideal for trekking and it also offers activities like mountain climbing and angling. A trek through the forests here will lead to Meenmutty falls. Other interesting sites from here are Chembra Peak and Muthanga wildlife sanctuary.

MAJOR WATERFALL TOUR

Soochipara Waterfall: Soochipara Falls is located 23 kilometres from Kalpetta and a 30-minutes drive from Meppady through the winding roads amidst tea plantations and natural forests will take you to this breathtaking waterfall. Situated near Vellarimala village near Chooralmala, the location of waterfall offers a scenic view of the tea estates of Wayanad. The waterfall and the surrounding area are covered by thick forests. The water falls from about 650 ft height and this three-pronged waterfall and the surrounding location provides the right ambience for trekking. The longest, but the easier trek is till you reach the first level of the waterfall. Climbing up to the second and third ranges is rather risky.

Soochipara means needle-like-rock in Malayalam and as the name indicates water falls on needle like sharp spikes of the rocks at the base. There is a natural pool created below the falls and it entices the visitors with cool clear water to take a dip in it. Tree-top huts too can be seen in this location within dense forests and a view from them is spectacular with greenery around and sparkling silver lining of streams in between.

Kanthampara Waterfalls: Kanthampara is a relatively small waterfall near Soochipara waterfalls. Compared to its adjacent waterfall, it lacks grandeur and is less frequented. But this is a very pleasant destination and an easy hike away from the main road will help you reach here.

Meenmutty waterfalls: Meenmutty waterfalls, the three-tiered waterfall which is situated about 29 km from Kalpetta is the most spectacular and the largest waterfall in the district. This is also the second largest waterfall in the state and the water nose-diving from about 1000 ft is sure to evoke awe in you.

Ambience:

It takes a 2 km hike through lush moist deciduous forests to reach the waterfalls. Separate treks are needed to reach each stage of the waterfall.

But the pristine natural ambience at the place coupled with the gentle sound of water gurgling over rocks will sure by wipe away all the fatigue of the trek. You can hear this luring natural music of water as you near the waterfalls through the jungle and it will surely rejuvenate your spirits. Climbing over hillocks and struggling through the dense foliage of the forests to reach the waterfalls can be a rare, thrilling experience to many of you, who are fed up with the monotony of the daily chores.

You can spend hours enjoying the cool waters here. With prior permission from the local forest officials, you can camp here overnight.

Chethalayam Falls: Chethalayam falls is situated about 12-km from Sulthan Bathery. These falls dry up during summer, but a trek to this place is an enchanting experience for adventure travellers. Though not a popular destination, the place offers a breathtaking view of nature.

When to Visit:

Nainital is a major summer destination and is best visited when people are thinking of avoiding the heat in the plains. Mid-April to mid-July and October are the high seasons here. How to Reach

Road:

State transport as well private operators run buses from Tallital Bus Stand to Dehrarun (300kms) Delhi (310kms) Haldwani (40kms) and Ramnagar (65kms).

Rail:

Kathgodam, 35 km away, is the nearest railhead. Trains link the town to Delhi, Kolkata, Dehradun and Lucknow. From Kathgodam, there are taxis available on shared seat basis, for those on shoestring budgets. Regular cabs and buses are also at your service.

Air:

Pantnagar, about 70 km from Nainital, is the nearest airport with direct flights to Delhi. From here you have to either hire a cab or take a bus.

For the best views, take the cable car to Snow-View Point. If the skies are clear, you can spot the soaring Nanda Devi; at 7,816 m, it is among the tallest mountain peaks in the world. The cable car operates between 10 am and 4 pm.

Naina Peak (China Peak)

The highest peak of the town, it commands a panoramic view of the snow-laden Himalayas, from Bandar Punch in the west to Api and Nari peaks of Nepal in the east. You can also get a bird's eye view of Nainital town. For those not wanting to exercise their legs, there are ponies and horses to ride upto Naini Peak. These can be hired from Snow-View Point or from Mallital.

Land's End

At an altitude of 2,118 m, you get a bewitching view of the surrounding hills and valleys and the lovely Khurpatal Lake. The place couldn't have been better named as you walk up the gentle slope, the land really does seem to end. The best way to get here is to take a drive up to Barapatthar and then walk the last kilometer.

Dorothy Seat and Tiffin Top

As the name suggests, pack a picnic hamper and head to this rugged hillside for a lazy afternoon. Dorothy Seat is a memorial for an English painter named Dorothy Kellet, built by her husband and admirers. You can cover Tiffin Top and Land's End in one go.

Shopping

Nainital is replete with souvenir shops and emporiums that sell textiles, clothing and handicrafts. The Mall Road, now named Govind Ballabh Pant Marg, is an excellent place for shopping for bric-a-brac and gifts. Other shopping hubs are Mallital Bazaar, Tallital Bazaar and Tibetan Market near Naina Devi Temple. Panchachuli Shop (Mallital, near Naina Devi Temple) sells fabrics hand-woven by the women of Almora. Intricately carved cane sticks, multicolored candles and wooden carvings are the local specialties. You can get these at Gupta Gift Emporium (Bara Bazaar in Mallital), Hill Top Tourist Point (Nainital, Ph. 235388) and Kasta Kala Kendra (Chorekhet, Khurpatal). If you want to pick up sweaters, check out Bohtia Bazaar at the Mall. Bhowali, about 11 km from Nainital, has a fruit mart where you can buy fresh-from-the-orchard apples, peaches and cherries.

Travel Tips

Nainital is a photographer's delight, so do not forget to take a camera with both wide angle and zoom lens for capturing the distant Himalayan peaks and vistas.

There is always a nip in the air, so ideally pack some warm clothes.

At a Glance

Nestled in the Garhwal range of the Himalayas, Mussoorie is part of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal. She offers beautiful views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks on the northeast and the Doon valley on the south.

When to Visit:

Mussoorie at an altitude of 6,950 ft (2,000 m) above sea level offers a pleasant weather. Summer temperatures range between 29C-7C. Winter temperatures can dip to 1.0C. The monsoon pours down on the hill station from June to August, causing landslides and even cutting off road links with Dehradun. The summer rush remains from April to July. The evergreen forests around Mussoorie break out in bloom in September, and remain so till November, making it a good time to visit. If you want to see Mussoorie under snow, then end December-early February is your best bet.

Orientation & Getting Around:

Mussoorie is best explored on foot. Cycle rickshaws and horse rides are most popular. For sightseeing, it's best to hire a cab from the numerous cab stands/hotels. Rates are negotiable.

Road:

Mussoorie is motorable from Delhi (270 km), Chandigarh (215 km), and of course Dehradun. There are regular buses, both state transport as well private luxury coaches that will ferry you to Mussoorie from these cities.

Rail:

Mussoorie does not have a direct rail link. Dehradun railway station (34 km away) is where you have to get down to head to Mussoorie. Express and superfast trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Allahabad and Amritsar link Dehradun.

Air:

Dehradun's Jollygrant airport about 60km away is the nearest airport, with regular flights to Delhi. From here, one has to hit the road. Luxury buses as well as cabs are easily available.

Lakes and Waterfalls

Mussoorie LakeAbout 7 km on the road to Dehradun, there is a nominal entry fee charged per person. One can enjoy boating. Kempty FallsThe most popular getaway is on the new road to Yamunotri, about 15 km from Mussoorie. A bath in the pool at the foot of the falls is a must-do for tourists thronging the spot. You can buy towels, bathing suits or warm up with a hot cuppa on the way to the falls. The other main waterfalls are Jharipani Falls, (8 km away), Bhatta Falls (7 km, on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road) and Mossey Falls (7 km, past Barlowganj).

Around Town

Lace up those walking shoes. Mussoorie is best enjoyed in a leisurely stroll. You can start with The Mall. Dotted with a number of shops, this is the main artery of Mussoorie. Pick up a gift or two, take a rickshaw ride down the Mall, watch the sunset, or simply watch life pass by. The Mall is just the place to do all this and much more. The Mall of late has become too crowded due to unchecked building activity. Yet if you want a place throbbing with life, going there is a must. But if you wish to move to more tranquil zones, shift to Sisters Bazaar on the other side of the town, which is pristine and placid. Kulri Bazaar and Library Chowk are two other interesting places that you should not miss. Check out the 3 km long stretch between Kulri Bazaar and Library Point, which is Camel's Back Road. The road, they say, is named after the Camel Rock, a lifelike resemblance to the animal, that can be seen from Mussoorie Public School. The old graveyards, made unforgettable by Ruskin Bond's stories, pop up on a walk down this road, where you may find the tombstones of a few people you might actually recognize! Want a bird's eye view of Mussoorie. Then, walk up to Gun Hill, the second highest point in Mussoorie. In the days of the British, there was a gun mounted atop this hill, which was fired every noon, to enable people to set their watches. You can either take the cable car from the Mall or walk up to peak. A horse ride on the steep incline is also an experience in itself. Municipal Gardens or Company (Bagh) Gardens (as it was known prior to Independence) is a botanist's dream. The famous geologist Dr. H. Fackner laid out these gardens. The cantonment area of Landour is about 5 km beyond Kulri Bazaar. Relax over a hot cuppa. The bazaar sells Raj memorabilia, silver jewellery and books. This landmark, like many others in the town of Mussoorie, has been immortalised by Ruskin Bond in his books. The highest point in Mussoorie, Lal Tibba is in the Landour area. On a clean day, you can see Badrinath, Kedarnath, Bandar Poonch, and even the Nanda Devi peaks from here. Cloud's End, now a resort, was among the first buildings to come up in Mussoorie. It was built in 1838 and is still surrounded by dense forests that open out to spellbinding views of snow peaks and the River Yamuna. Cloud's End is about 8 km from the Library. Childer's Lodge, the highest point in the area, is 5 km from the Tourist Office. Reached by foot or on ponies, the summit offers great views of snow peaks. Van Chetna Kendra, 2 km from Mussoorie on the Tehri Bypass, is a spectacular picnic spot. The lovely park here surrounded by pine forests and flowering shrubs, is visually enchanting. The wildlife population of the park, which includes Ghurar, Kakar, Himalayan peacock, Monal etc is another major attraction. Sir George Everest, the first Surveyor General of India, and the one after whom the highest mountain peak in the world is named, lived in Mussoorie's Park Estate. The laboratory he worked from and his house still remain there for people to see. Mussoorie is also known for its academic institutions that include the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Waverley Convent, Wynberg Allen School, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Academy and the Defense Institute of Work Studies.

Religious Places

There are several shrines surrounding Mussoorie. The Nag Devta Temple and the Jwalaji Temple, atop Benog Hill, in addition to being places of worship, offer excellent views of the Himalayas. Bhadraj Temple is about 15 km from Mussoorie. The principal deity here is the brother of Lord Krishna, Balram. Every year, on Shravan Sankranti day, in the third week of August, a festival is celebrated here. Sarkunda Devi is 35 km from Mussoorie. To reach here, one has to drive till Khaddu Khal and then cover the last 2 km on foot or on ponies. This spot is also considered as a trekker's dream.

Festivals

Thanks to the temples in and around, Navratri (October/November) is a grand celebration with processions and plenty of music and dance. At all other times, the commercial nature of the town takes over and it's New Year and Christmas parties that become festivals.

Shopping

The Mall is the place to go shopping while in Mussoorie. Tibetan prayer wheels, wooden boxes and pen stands, hand-carved walking sticks and Ladakhi shawls are some of the things to pick up from here. Pure Ladakhi shawls are a bit pricey, but worth it. The antique jamawar shawls carry heavy price tags, but they are worth having a look at even if not being purchased. Nowadays modern techniques are being used to weave these shawls, which have reduced their price. So, if the shopkeeper asks for the sky, bargain!

Activities

Capitol Complex Also referred to as the Temples of Democracy, the High Court, Secretariat and the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) are all in Sector 1 and designed by Corbusier making Chandigarh proud. The High Court and can be visited any time as there are no security restrictions. It's architectural highlights are the overhanging roof and buttresses. Corbusier has painstakingly designed an intricate tapestry for every room. For visiting the Secretariat and the Vidhan Sabha, arm yourself with a permission letter from the Chandigarh Tourist Centre (1st floor, Sector 17; Tel: 2703839).

Rock Garden What began as a crazy pastime of a nondescript traffic inspector is today Chandigarh's most famous landmark. Inspector Nek Chand has used junk of every kind- bottles, tiles, tins, pots, stones- to build a garden with cobbled pathways, gazebos, pavilions and even tiny streams and waterfalls. There are models of dogs, birds, elephants, mythological creatures, again fashioned from recycled junk. The park is close to the Capitol Complex.

Sukhna Lake Le Corbusier's brainchild is this artificial lake, created by damming the Sukhna Choe, a stream flowing down from the Shivaliks. The lake has boating facilities. Fringing the lake are gardens, a playground and a restaurant-cum-bar. Jogging or strolling by the lake is a popular activity. Storks and cranes make migratory visits to Sukhna.

City Museum The museum tells you all about the planning and progress of the city. Photos, letters, models, newspapers, reports and architectural drawings related to the city's construction are on display. The museum is open all days except Mondays and national holidays.

Government Museum and Art Gallery Set up by M.S. Randhawa, the first Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh, the museum today has some priceless stone sculptures and miniature paintings, especially of the Pahari and Kangra schools. The objects d'art in terracotta, ivory, lacquer, ceramic, and enamel, and phulkari and rumal embroidery make interesting viewing. The museum is open from 10 am-4.30 pm; Mondays are holidays.

National Gallery of Portraits A visual narration of the Indian independence movement through photographs and paintings is what this gallery is all about. It is in Sector 17 and admits visitors between 10 am-5.30 pm.

Parks and Gardens

Though Bangalore is the official Garden City, Corbusier has laid out enough gardens in and around Chandigarh to warrant a similar epithet to the city. The Rose Garden in Sector 16 with its musical fountain, and the multihued Bougainvillea Garden in Sector 3 are among the best.

Pinjore (Yadavindra) Gardens Soft carpet of undulating grass dotted with fountains and pavilions, this demands a visit. It was originally built in the 17th century by Aurangazeb's brother Fidai Khan. Legend has it that the mythological Pandavas stopped here during their exile. Pinjore is 20 km from the city centre, on the Pinjore-Kalka Road.

Religious Places

Mansa Devi and Chandi Mandir Some 10 km from Chandigarh, these temples dedicated to the Mother Goddess predate the city. The garden attached to the Mansa Devi temple is believed to contain sacred plants.

Festivals

Baisakhi (April) Baisakhi marks the Hindu New Year. For the Sikhs, it is also the day when Guru Gobind Singh initiated the Khalsa. Guru Nanak Jayanti (October/November) The birth anniversaries of the ten Sikh gurus, including those of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh (December/January) are holy days. People throng to the gurudwaras, shabad (verses from the Granth Sahib) are sung and langars (community kitchens) set up to serve food to one and all.

Shopping

Chandigarh is a city of sprawling malls and only occasionally does one spot a handicrafts emporium. There is as such no 'traditional' Chandigarhi item to shop for, but you can browse for the famous curly-toed jootis, embroidered Punjabi dupattas (stoles) in jewel colours, and woollens. Good hunting grounds are Phulkari, the Punjab government emporium (SCO 27, Sector 17E), Black Partridge, the Haryana state emporium (SCO 104-105, Sector 17), Weaver (SCO 18-19, Sector 9D), Handloom Emporium (Sector 17), Leathera (Sector 17, 22 and 35) and Charma Shilpa (SCF 8, Sector 22 D). Like every other tourist, keep an evening reserved for the famous Sector 17 shopping area. Lined with shops and restaurants, this is where the young and trendy live it up.

How to Reach

Road: A long hill drive. Set off from Delhi in the pre-dawn hours Highway driving right through. The drive up the Beas after Pandoh Dam is gorgeous (14 hrs). Bus: HPTDC? S bus from Janpath (dep: 7 pm; arr: 9.30 am). It is well connected to Delhi, Chandigarh. The National highway passes through from Delhi to Manali. You can either take the bus from Delhi or you can take the train to Chandigarh and then a bus from there to Manali. It's a good 10-12 hour journey so make sure you're well prepared. You can also take buses from Kullu and travel through the picturesque scenery to reach Manali. You can also reach Manali from Shimla which is 280 kms away by bus. There are many private and government buses that ply the routes to and from Manali to various parts of Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

Rail: The comfortable way to reach Manali is to catch the Delhi - Chandigarh- Shatabdi Express. But, the nearest railway station is at Jogindar that is 166 kms from Manali. From there you can hitch a ride on the local bus or hire a taxi available outside the railway station. Also you can travel till Chandigarh by rail and then take a bus/car from there to Manali.

Air: The nearest airport to Manali is in Bhuntar that is 77 kms from Manali. You can reach the city from the airport by bus or taxi.

Must See, Must Do

Hidamba temple is too beautiful to miss. You have to see the temple and enjoy the natural beauty that is abundant on the way to the temple.
Check out the Tibetan Bazaar and some of its unique silver and turquoise jewellery. But be sure to bargain! Also get some juices and pickles that are available.
The Afghani shawls and Pashmina shawls are very good. Grab them and again, bargain as they quote exorbitant rates.

Trek the high hills

Being the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti, Leh and Ladakh, Rohtang sees plenty of activity in season. It's best to join a trek through a professional organization. Equipment can be hired at a nominal cost from several operators in Manali. The frozen Beas Kund, the source of the Beas, or Chandratal Lake are good options. The trekking season runs from early April to mid-June and then again from mid-September to mid-October.

Mountain adventure at Solang

Wooded forests, snow-covered slopes, open green valleys and the fast-flowing Beas make Manali an ideal destination for mountain adventure sports. Most of the adventure activity is centered on Solang Nallah, 13 km away. The Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (Tel: 01902-252342, 253789, 252206, 252137), North Face Adventure Tours (Tel: 01902-252441), and Himalayan Adventures (Tel: 01902-252750), among others, organize activities along with the equipment and guides. You can make a day trip there by bus, taxi or car from Manali, or even camp overnight. There are 2 1/2 km of ski-runs and, come January, even beginners can try their hand at this ultimate mountain sport. HPTDC runs skiing courses here, details of which can be obtained from their office in New Delhi. If you haven't done this before, don't miss the paragliding. The 2-minute joyride will either scare you out of your wits or the spectacular views will whet your appetite for the longer 10-15-minute high rides (which cost around Rs 500 and Rs 1,700 respectively).

River-rafting

The Beas is a wild river; rafting on it requires strong nerves and stamina. The seasons last from May to mid-June and from end-September to mid-October. The trip starts at Pirdi and terminates after a 16-km lurch-and-toss ride at Jhirhi. Prices vary from Rs 600 to 1,000, and include transport, equipment and a guide.

Drive to Rohtang Pass

The 51-km climb up to the Pass, 13,060 ft above sea level, is formidable. Most people probably don't know that Rohtang means pile of corpses in Tibetan. Many of these corpses belonged to the hapless residents of the Lahaul Valley at the far north of Himachal which the Rohtang Pass connects to Kullu-Manali and the rest of India for a few months of the year at least. But once on top, the stunning panoramas of the array of snow peaks and glaciers and of the desolate Lahaul Valley below would banish all fears. So hire a four-wheel drive, and head for this wind-swept strip of land. It is best to plan your trip to Manali when the Pass is open to tourists (July-September usually), if Rohtang is your main interest. Hitting the Pass by motorcycle (Rs 300 a day, excluding petrol) from Old Manali is an exhilarating experience. You'll pass the turn-off to Solang at Palchan. The climb is steep from here on. Rohtang is cold, so rent coats, snow boots and gloves further up the road. You can stop en route at Snow Point to play in the snow, but only from January to April. At the village of Nehru Kothi, you can savour phenomenal views of the young Beas. Further along, you will pass Marhi, where touts may try to tell you that Rohtang is closed and invite you to ski instead. Just drive on over the Beas, which rudely flows over the highway here. If you can, get to Rohtang at daybreak to watch the drama of a Himalayan dawn unfold. Finally, look north for dazzling views of the Sonapani Glacier and down, at the Lahaul Valley. Don't attempt the road to Rohtang if you are an inexperienced driver.

Vasisht Baths This is a small village along the banks of the River Beas, 3 kilometers from the main city. It is famous for its hot springs that have sulphur in them and said to have medicinal properties. There is also a temple of Sage Vashisht and Lord Rama that is worth visiting. Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa This beautiful monastery is one of the most popular monasteries in Manali. Amongst the gushing life and myriad colours, there is also an all pervading air of serenity. There are many Tibetan handicrafts like carpets and durries that you can buy from here. Manali Sanctuary A small path that passes the Hidambi temple leads you to the Manali Sanctuary. It is comprised of pine trees and is a dense, but well maintained forest in its own right. It has trees like deodar, kail, horsechestnut and maple. You can commune with the wild side of nature by camping in overnight tents in this almost forest like atmosphere, at the edge of civilization. You can camp with tents at Lambadug or Galiani Thatch which are camps. Arjun Gufa – cave is located on the banks of the Beas River, near the Prini village. This is the cave where Arjun is supposed to have meditated in order to earn the Pashupata Astra or the weapon of Lord Indra. Jagatsukh Located at a distance of 6 kilometers from Manali, Jagatsukh was once the capital of Kullu. It has beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Sandhya Gayathri. It is close to the Arjun Gufa. Having Fun You can simply wander around the town of Manali's Mall Street which has many shopping arcades. There are many cafes around in Manali that host parties, but you should be careful not to get mixed up with drugs even by mistake as the police in Manali are very strict about drugs since there have been many instances of tourists who end up becoming addicts and disappear. Once you cross the old bridge across Manalsu River, you get to the quieter part of town. Besides this, there are many picnic spots around the city which have breathtaking views. It is a different kind of paradise on earth, one that is full of greenery and flowers and butterflies in the summer and ice and snow in the winter. Kothi Some of the picnic spots around Manali are Kothi that is 12 kilometres from Manali city. This is a beautiful picturesque Cliffside that is above the Beas River. This is an ideal picnic spot. Solang Valley This is 14 kilometers from Manali and is a picturesque valley that has good skiing slopes and picnic spots. Besides this you can also take a look at the breath taking glacier. You can enjoy nature in all its glory especially during the sunsets when sun beams glint off the ice from the glaciers. Skiing is popular on this valley. The mountaineering institute is situated nearby and provides training and equipment to tourists who wish to trek, ski or carry out mountaineering. Rahla Falls This is 14 kilometers from Manali and you can watch the Beas River hurtle itself from 50 meters. It is beautiful to watch and is good spot for picnics. The Club House This is situated at the edge of New Manali and has a skating rink in it. It also has a comfortable place to sit and sip drinks and enjoy the luxury of the surroundings.

If you are an adventure freak, then Manali is the place for you! The expansive adventure opportunities available here are amazing! Prepare to be one with nature and experience the exquisite beauty and ruggedness of this Himalayan town. The Mountaineering Institute that is in Aleo on the banks of the Beas River offers training as well as equipment for hikers, trekkers, mountaineers, kayaking, white water rafting and of course skiing. Skiing Manali is a paradise for skiing. You can go skiing near the Tibetan valley, on the roof of the world. You can ski from January to March in the Solang valley and during the summers in the Rohtang pass. The mountaineering institute situated near Solang Valley provides equipment for skiing and also trains people to ski. Heli Skiing Manali also has another kind adventure sports - Heli skiing. Helicopters drop skiers onto high slopes that are as high as 5000 or even 6500 meters from where they can ski down. Experience the thrill as you ski on the roof of the world! Kayaking This is also possible in the Beas River. For the those who have never done so, you can receive training in Kayaking from the Mountaineering institute situated near Solang Valley and go kayaking in the Beas River. Hiking/Trekking Getting close to nature is one of the reasons Manali attracts tourists each year. Trekking and hiking around this region is very popular and you can actually feel the elements of the Earth in this tiny town that is cradled by mountains and has many tributaries and rivers meandering through it. There are several treks and hikes from Manali. Trekking from Manali over the Hamta Pass to Chandertal Lake or the Lake of the Moon is a popular choice. Other locations include trekking to the Beas Kund which takes about 4 days and is mostly from May to October. Other locations include Beas Kund, Malana, Lamayuru, Padum and the Pin Valley. These treks are normally during May to October and span 7-8 days. Jeep Safari Exploring the rugged mountainous locations in a jeep is adventurous and requires a strong backbone! Lahaul and Spiti are two remote valleys that are popular locations for Jeep safaris. You can also travel to Leh by jeep from Manali and be back. If you have a time crunch and still want to feast your eyes on the wonders of the Himalayas, then a Jeep Safari is the thing to do. It takes roughly 5 days to travel to these locations. You can also travel to the distant Indo-Tibetan border and watch the breathtaking and serene landscapes in these locales. The best season for Jeep Safari is during summer, from Mid July to October. White water rafting on the Beas River White Water Rafting on the Beas is also gaining popularity. Rafting takes place at a stretch of around 16 - 20 kilometers and is close to the Kullu valley that is 40 kilometers from Manali. There are different levels of rafting ranging from easy to very difficult so if you are ready to get wet and manage to maneuver a boat with others, white water rafting will be very exciting. Rafting is best done during summer when the water levels are high. There are possibilities of summer showers which will not cause immense discomfort, if you are willing to remove water from the boat. There will only be more water and getting wet will be a certainty. Paragliding Imagine flying high and having an eagle eye view of the Himalayas. Breathtaking views of snow and sunlight glinting off its surface and little dots of green and brown as you glide through the clear blue skies. That's paragliding for you in the Solang Nala near Manali. The best seasons for paragliding are from February to June and September to November.

Religious Places

Manu Temple This is the temple dedicated to the Rishi after whom the city is named. The temple of Manu is situated in Old Manali and the temple is a half hour walk up the hill of this picturesque place. Legend has it that this is the spot where Manu rested after the great flood, before he brought forth life. Hidambi Temple (Dhoongri Temple) This beautiful four storied temple was built in 1553 and is about 1.5 kilometers from the main city. It is dedicated to Hidambi, who is the wife of Pandava prince Bhima. She is hailed as Goddess due to her spiritual link with the Pandavas and is believed to be an avtaar of Goddess Kali. This temple is built in a Pagoda style and its architecture is beautiful. The carvings and sculptures on the doorway depict various mythological scenes and deities in the temple, making it a worthwhile tourist must-see.

Festivals

The Hadimba temple festival in May is quite popular and has a lot of dancing and singing. Dussehra and Shiv Ratri are two important festivals in Manali. During Dussehra, which is in September or October, the festivities go on for a week and there is a lot of singing and dancing. The highlight of the festival is the Rath festival on the Dussehra day. 200 idols are brought down from the hill and they all pay homage to Lord Rama who is taken in procession in a large chariot.

Shopping

All the main markets in Manali are located in the downtown area and around the corner of Mall Street. If you want woolens and shawls, the best place to go is Old Manali and Vashisht. Handicrafts and Tibetan souvenirs are also available in the town. You can also buy a variety of Silver and jewellery in the Tibetan Market or the Tibetan and Nepalese shops near the Manali post office. Other places to shop are Chari trust Tibetan Handicrafts Emporium which is on Mall Street and Kullu - Kashmir Handicraft Cooperation that is near the Bus stand. These offer a good variety of Pashmina shawls and souvenirs. There are also many small bazaars which have traditional Afghan, Kullu and Kinnawri hats are quite cheap. Go ahead and buy. Be sure to hone your bargaining skills! The Tibetan Bazaar at the south end of Manali is a very colorful place, selling colorful Tibetan carpets, shawls, caps and other woolen clothes. They also include a range of Tibetan arts and crafts, and jewellery made of silver and turquoise. Another good buy are the locally made pickles, jams and juices. For postcards and even a tolerable collection of books, you can check out the NAC Market and the Bookworm which is on the Mall Street.

Tips for you

It is better to book your accommodation before you come to Manali, especially in peak season, as it is quite a popular destination and hotels can get pretty much over booked.
Carry your walking/sports shoes as it offers a variety of adventure activities.

Darjeeling - Queen of the Eastern Himalays

Until the beginning of the 18th century, the area between the present borders of Sikkim and the plains of Bengal, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong belonged to the kings of Sikkim. In 1706 the king lost Kalimpong to the Bhutanese and Darjeeling was invaded by the Gurkhas in 1780, as they had established and strengthened themselves in Nepal. These annexations by the Gurkhas became a sore point with the British who were quick to appreciate Darjeeling's value as a site for a sanatorium and hill station, and also as a probability to a pass into Nepal and Tibet. They started building pressure on the king of Sikkim into granting the site to the British and this is how Darjeeling came into existence. It was just a dense, uninhabited forest when the British came in and they soon converted that into tea estates, built roads, bridges, sanatoriums houses and lodges. Nepalese labor was employed in the growing of tea plantations and by 1857 Darjeeling had a population of some 10,000. Even today, the vast majority of people speak Nepali as a first language and the name Darjeeling continues to be synonymous with tea.

Queen of the Eastern Himalayas

Popularly known as the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling is in the Shivalik hills, lower range of the Himalayas. Like most other hill stations in India, the British developed Darjeeling as a respite from the summer heat in the plains. The British loved the town for the compete rejuvenation package that it offered - serene atmosphere, view of the snowline, scented pines and a golden coloured brew called the Darjeeling tea. The place has since become a pilgrimage of sorts for tea connoisseurs.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the town's other claim to global fame. Connecting the town with the plains, it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 and is one of the few steam engines still in service in India. Darjeeling also has several British-style public schools, hotels and houses that are very old and declared as heritage buildings.

Another feature that separates Darjeeling from its sister hill stations is its happy go lucky attitude, a cheer that envelops the people of this place. It is a curious coming together of a languorous oriental charm and a present day well paced energetic lifestyle.

Stocky, well built energetic men and women dressed in home grown versions of skirts and lungis, red cheeked, as though flushed with nature's bountiful reserves, throng the roads, not to forget young guitar wielding teenagers dressed up in their trademark jeans and an attitude of gay abandon.

Darjeeling is another name for surprises; every corner that the road leads to is a revelation. Durga Puja is worshipped and beautiful images of her are immersed in the water after taking them in colorful processions.

Don't forget to carry your walking shoes, gumboots, light woollens for most of the time and heavy woollens for winters.

Remember to carry raincoats umbrellas, powerful flashlight, water flask cameras etc.

Follow the rates given on most of the rate boards especially for ponies , porters, treks, buses, share taxis etc. Rates are normally fixed and rarely negotiable.

Travelling during monsoon that is from June to Sept is quite dangerous ,it can cause dangerous landslide which will sweep away roads and Darjeeling will be cut off from the rest of India, so rainy season is not a time to visit.

Best season to visit is March to mid June and October to December. Darjeeling is very cold from November up to March and it rains heavily between June to August leading to landslides and road blockades. If you chance to be around this time carry raincoats and umbrellas and be ready for cloudy and foggy days. In winter water tends to be scarce. For mountain views the best time to visit is from mid September to mid November, and then from mid March to mid June, when it starts becoming hazy, because of cloud cover. How to Reach

Road:

Regular bus services and hired vehicles connect Darjeeling to Bagdogra, Siliguri and the neighbouring towns of Kurseong, Kalimpong and Gangtok in Sikkim. Being a tea belt one comes across many Land Rovers and Garden jeeps, as they can easily navigate the steep slopes in the region. Share matadors and minibuses are also available and from Siliguri the tickets vary between Rs. 100 to 150. Journey Time - about 3 hours from the airport/ Siliguri.
Rail:

The closest major railway station is in New Jalpaiguri, NJP for short. New Jalpaiguri /Siliguri is the rail head for all trains, except the toy train running to Darjeeling. If you want to enjoy the scenery the toy train is a must. It takes six to seven hrs from Siliguri covering a distance of almost 80 km.

Air:
The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, near Siliguri, 93 km (58 miles) from Darjeeling. Bagdogra is connected to important cities of the country by domestic airlines.

Tiger Hill

Situated at an altitude of 2590 metres (8482 ft.) and 13 km from the town, this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over "Kanchenjunga" and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains. Even Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is visible from here. The snow-clad Himalayan ranges have a majestic presence in the background and Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak, is visible on bright sunny days and is a major tourist attraction.

The Mall

The Mall is Darjeeling's popular commercial street, with book shops, Tibetans selling hand-knitted sweaters, souvenir shops, eateries and tea/coffee stalls accompanied with hot steaming momos. The Mall leads to Chaurasta, a square, which also is pony riding arena for children.

Batasia Loop

About 5 km from Darjeeling, this Railway Loop is a marvellous feat of engineering. It is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the loop. The War Memorial constructed in the memory of brave sons of Darjeeling who died in different action since 1947, is worth a visit.

Chowrasta

The Chowrasta, meaning crossroad, is the heart of Darjeeling. It is a coming together of hotels, restaurants, curio sellers, semi precious and precious stones spiritual artifacts, woollen garments, rosaries, tankhas etc.

River rafting

White Water Rafting is an adventure sport, which is relatively new in the Darjeeling Hills. Darjeeling is also home to the mighty River Teesta and Rangeet whose turbulent currents make a formidable challenge to even the seasoned rafter. There is however a wide range in the intensity of the rapids making it adequate for all, the young and the aged to enjoy the spectacular scenery while leisurely snaking down the river. The Dept. of Tourism, DGHC has successfully promoted this sport and has acquired well trained members and quality equipment ensuring a safe and pleasant ride to all visitors. These are activities that attract tourist attention.

St. Paul's School

St. Paul's School is one of the India's oldest and most pre-eminent public schools, known for its academic tradition and alumni. At about 7500 feet above sea level, it offers a great scenic pleasure and has the famous Kanchenjunga mountain range right behind. St Paul is physically separated from Darjeeling by its location on a high hill that is a few kilometers above the main town. Large expanses of wild land and greenery surround the campus, affording the campus a spectacular view of the town, the high foothills and snowy peaks of the Himalayas.

Governor's house

The British treated this place as a getaway destination in the summer months and the tradition continues even today, though unofficially, with the governor shifting base from Kolkata to the Raj Bhawan or the Governor's house in Darjeeling. The house is over hundred years old and the koi hai culture prevails. The high ceilings, the old banisters, the majestic pillars and big rooms create a deja vu and the romance of the yesteryears envelops the visitor.

Religious Places

It is a place of monasteries centres of Buddhist beliefs like Samdenchoeling, Sakyachoeling, Phin Sotholing, Aloobari, Thupten Sangachoeling and Sonada Gompas. The Dhirdham Temple is the most prominent Hindu temple here.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

HMI for short is a museum of sorts and also a training centre. The equipments used by the famous duo Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay are on display at the centre including their boots, the torch, their personal items, clothing and mountaineering essentials that they had carried along with, when they set out to scale Mount Everest. The humble start of the Sherpa is highlighted. Born in the village of Moyey in the Tibet, raised in Nepal and a resident of India for his life, Tenzing never learnt to read or write, but had an active mind and was fluent in several languages. Known for his daring spirit and competence in trekking, Tenzing Norgay, (1914-1986) went to Everest as a high altitude porter on the 1935, 1936 and 1938 Expeditions. In 1952, he was a climbing member of the Swiss expedition's attempt on Everest. With Raymond Lambert he reached 28,200 feet (8595m) in the spring campaign. The following year with Edmund Hillary, Tenzing completed the same route, thus making the first successful summit ascent. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister and a visionary to commemorate the famous Everest feat and to laud the enthusiasm of the youth opened a mountaineering institute (HMI) in Darjeeling and equipped the institute with a technical expertise that could be imparted to young and keen mountaineers. Today it is a renowned mountaineering institute in the world.

A clear history of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands can be had only from a British Survey of these islands conducted in 1777. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands remained the abode of the Negritos and the Mongoloids respectively, who occupied the Islands for centuries. These islands remained secluded from the mainland till the end of the 18th Century when people from the outside world first arrived. The history of these islands could be divided into four broad periods the period of seclusion and piratical disturbances

a) the British regime - a period of foreign intrusion and settlement
b) the Japanese regime
c) and the Post-Independence period.

In the Second Century, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were located in the maps prepared by the great Greek astronomer, mathematician and geographer, Claudius Ptolemaeus, which possibly is the earliest reference to these islands. The early history of Nicobar is not well known although these islands were familiar to traders in ancient times, the islands being situated close to the trade route to the Far East. Though little is known about Portuguese activities in these islands, it is evident that the Portuguese missionaries started preaching Christianity among the islanders. The Nicobarese language also reflects a few Portuguese words.

Orientation & Getting Around:

For going to islands near Port Blair, you can take the ferry. There are boats to Havelock Island, Neil Island, Little Andamans, Long Island, Rangat Bay and Mayabunder. Most of these set sail from Phoenix Bay Jetty and Chatham Wharf. The Marine Department and the Phoenix Jetty Boating Office have schedules of boats and ferries. The daily newspaper also publishes ferry schedules. Another option is buses. These operate between Port Blair and Wandoor, Chiriya Tapu, Rangat and Mayabunder.

In addition, permits can also be obtained from: Indian Missions Overseas, Foreigner’s Registration Offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and the immigration authorities at the airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai.

The places covered by this permit for night halt are: South Andaman Island, Middle Andaman Island and Little Andaman Island (except tribal reserve), Neil Island, Havelock Island, Long Island, Diglipur, Baratang, North Passage and islands in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (excluding islands – Boat Hobday, Twin, Tarmugli, Malay and Pluto) Night halt in the Park is with permission only.

For Day Halt South Cinque Island, Ross Island, Narcondum Island, Interview Island, Brother Island, Sister Island and Barren Island ( Barren Island can be visited on board vessels only).

Indians

Indian nationals need no permit to visit Andamans. However, permits are required to visit Nicobar Islands and other tribal areas, which are given in exceptional cases. Application on a prescribed form may be addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Andaman District, Port Blair.

Take the Harbour Cruise from Phoenix Jetty. You'll be left speechless at the panoramic view of seven important points of the island.
These trips are conducted daily except on Wednesdays, between 3 pm and 5 pm.
Get your gear, hire an instructor and go scuba diving/snorkelling. It's not everywhere that you can see the marvel under the sea.

Historical Places

Cellular Jail Located in Port Blair, this infamous jail was built by the British to house criminals. Later Indian freedom fighters, especially the revolutionaries, were incarcerated here. The edifice is now a commemoration to the contribution made by Indian nationalists, to rid India of colonial bondage. The jail hosts a sound and light show in English on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7.15 pm. The show in Hindi is conducted daily at 6 pm. These are however discontinued during the rainy season. The show brings alive the moving saga of the heroic freedom struggle and outlines the history of the prison. There is a museum, an art gallery, and a photo gallery, which are open on all days except Mondays, from 9 am-12 noon and 2 pm-5 pm. Chatham Island The island is 5 km northwest of Aberdeen Bazaar and is connected to Port Blair through a tiny land strip, with the sea lapping on both sides. The British built the Chatham Sawmill here and it is one of the oldest and largest timber processing plants in India. Sadly, photography is prohibited here.

Museums

Samudrika Naval Maritime Museum Run by the Indian Navy it has an interesting marine life collection, including all kinds of shells and molluscs. There are separate galleries for tribal life, flora and fauna and corals. The museum is on MG Road, opposite A & N Tourism's Teal House Hotel. The doors are open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am-noon and 2 pm-5:30 pm. Anthropological Museum Also on MG Road, the museum showcases utensils, dresses and weapons of the various tribal groups living in these islands. These are creatively displayed in life-size huts once occupied by the tribals. There are also rare photographs displaying various aspects of tribal life. Above the museum is a well stocked library where you can look up books. Timings are 9 am-1 pm and 1.30 pm-4.30 pm; Thursdays are holidays.

Religious Places

There are a lot of temples dotting the city landscape. The MuruganTemple, Ganesh Temple and the Radha Govind temples are among the oldest and the most popular temples in this island city. Of the dozen mosques, the Masjid at Aberdeen and the Mazhaar near Cardyns Cove see lots of followers. The Gol Ghar, the Marthoma Church and the Christ Church are some of the popular Christian churches in Port Blair.

ISLAND TOUR

Rutland Island

Is an important diving site near Port Blair. The smaller fish that inhabit the Island live in these waters along with some beautiful corals. An ideal place for training new divers. Snake Island: The island boasts of awesome rock faces and spectacular dive landscapes. The marine life includes trigger fish, grunts, goatfish and sting rays.

Jolly Buoy Island

An island in Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, it offers a breath taking underwater view of coral and marine life. It is an ideal place for snorkeling , sea bathing and basking on the sun kissed beach.

Cinque Island

The lure of underwater coral gardens and unspoiled beaches specially a sand bar joining two islands are irresistible. Super place for SCUBA diving, swimming, fishing and Camping.

Red Skin Island

Another island in Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park has a nice beach and offers spectacular view of corals and marine life.

Havelock Island

About 38 Kms. from Port Blair, this island provides idyllic resort in the lap of virgin beach and unpolluted environment. Camping facility is available near Radhanagar beach. A guesthouse of Tourism Department "Dolphin Resort" is available for the tourists.

Barren Island

At a distance of about 135 Kms. from Port Blair is the land of volcano, Barren Island, the only active volcano in India. The Island, about 3 Kms. has a big crater of the volcano, rising abruptly from the sea, about 1/2 Km. from the shore and is about 150 fathoms deep. Can be visited on board vessels.

Ross Island
Once the seat of British power and capital of these Islands, it stands now as a ruin of the bygone days with the old structure almost in debris. A small museum named 'Smritika' holds photographs and the other antiques of the Britishers relevant to these islands.

Viper Island

The Britishers used to harbour convicts here. The first jail was constructed here which was abandoned after the construction of Cellular Jail. It has a gallows atop a hillock, where condemned prisoners were hanged. Sher Ali, who killed Lord Mayo, the Viceroy of India in 1872, was also hanged here.

Chatham Island
It has a Saw Mill lying on the tiny island connected by a bridge over a stretch of sea-water. This Saw Mill is one of the biggest and oldest in Asia. The main mainland -Island harbour is also here. The other harbour is Haddo, which is nearby.

Where to Eat

Though cut off from the mainland, Port Blair's restaurants offer dishes to please palates from across the world. From north and south Indian staples to Burmese and Thai specialties, and a wide variety of seafood. Annapurna Cafeteria serves the usual range of huge crispy dosas, north Indian thalis, and Chinese. Its breakfast offering steaming pongal with chutney and piping hot coffee is ambrosia. China Room, run by a Burmese-Punjabi couple, is the place for seafood. Be warned that the restaurant is generous with chilli and ginger. Islet is a safe option for north Indian tandoori cuisine, especially chicken. Waves is a very congenial al fresco hotel under a shady palm grove, and one of the few places in town where you can order a beer with your meal.

Shopping

The Central Cottage Industries and Sagarika (MG Road, Middle Point) are good places to pick up a wide spectrum of artifacts made of pearls, sea shells, wood, coconut shells and coir. Miniatures of Nicobari canoes, palm floor-mats, and furniture are also available here. The Khadi Gramodyog Emporium next door displays Khadi textiles, woodcraft and shellcraft. The shops are open all days except Sundays and other holidays, between 9 am and 1 pm and 1.30 pm and 6 pm.

Visit only the permitted areas and make use of the services of an authorised tourist guide.
Consult life guards before entering the sea and swim in the safe areas only.
Keep the beaches and environment clean. Dispose off garbage in dustbins.
Avail the services of scuba diving instructors having certification of organisations like PADI, CMAS, NAUI, BSAC or SSI for safe diving experience.
Do not enter restricted/tribal areas and if in a Tribal Reserve Area do not shoot photographs or videos.
Camping in beaches or forest areas during nights is not permitted.
Do not light fire in the forest areas or enter national parks without permission.
Do not collect, destroy or remove any living or dead animal/plant.
Eat food that is boiled, cooked or fried; avoid anything that is cold or raw.

Language Tips

A smattering of English, Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Nicobarese, and Telugu is spoken here. People are eager to converse in English. And a smile can get you out of a tough spot.
