Our February release features a new MORA/LSALT Grid Overlay, the ability to preview student comments in Logbook, Aircraft on Same Runway Alerts, and RMZs in Controlled Airspace Alerts.

MORA/LSALT Grid Overlay

Identify the altitudes to avoid along your flight route by referencing the Minimum Off-Route Altitude (MORA), or Lowest Safe Altitude (LSALT) in Australia, directly on the Aeronautical Map.

Altitudes, in feet, are represented as the first number indicating thousands and the second, smaller number indicating hundreds within the grid.

The grid initially is presented as a 5ºx5º grid, which dynamically condenses to 1ºx1º as you zoom in on the map. Altitudes under 10,000 feet are depicted in green, suggesting lower terrain/obstacle heights, while altitudes exceeding 10,000 feet are highlighted in red, indicating significantly higher terrain/obstacles.

The Grid MORA overlay in ForeFlight provides pilots with a visual representation of these altitudes, aiding in flight planning, terrain avoidance and safer navigation. Grid MORA incorporates altitude buffers of 1,000 feet for 6,000 feet or less and a 2,000 feet buffer for 7,000 feet and above for obstacle clearance globally.

This differs from OROCA, which is U.S. only, and maintains a standard 1,000-foot buffer unless in designated mountainous terrain when it uses 2,000 feet.

This new setting is disabled by default but can be enabled in Map Settings > Grid MORA/LSALT (ft) while the Aeronautical Map is active.

Logbook: Preview Student Comments

Instructors can now review student comments prior to signing remote entries, ensuring transparency and efficiency. Easily append notes, sign, and save without hassle. New signature requests appear in Logbook > Drafts & Requests with a preview of the student’s comments.

In addition to existing functionalities, instructors can now save the draft along with student comments to their personal logbook. This ensures that student comments are retained for future reference, enabling the instructor to maintain accurate records.

Aircraft on Same Runway Alerts

Receive critical safety alerts before entering a runway, notifying you of other aircraft occupying the runway. The prominent visual and audio alerts specify which runway the traffic target is currently using or approaching and visually highlight the traffic target in red.

Boeing acquires OzRunways, a leading Australian electronic flight bag provider

OzRunways will report into ForeFlight, enabling the companies to share knowledge and enhance their respective applications to the benefit of customers

ForeFlight recently entered Australia with CASA certification as a data service provider

Continuing its focus to support pilots around the world with powerful and innovative applications, Boeing today announced it has acquired OzRunways, a leading electronic flight bag (EFB) provider in Australia and other countries. OzRunways will report into ForeFlight, a Boeing company.

“OzRunways and ForeFlight have a common culture of innovation – creating software with a focus on intuitive, pilot-centric design,” said Bas Scheffers, co-founder and CEO at OzRunways. “Now we are excited to join the ForeFlight team and collaborate on bringing even greater capabilities to pilots all over the globe.”

In February 2023, ForeFlight launched product support in Australia for personal, business and military aviation use after being approved by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as a data service provider. Also in March, ForeFlight announced it had acquired CloudAhoy, a flight debriefing software provider based in the United States, to enhance its post-flight analysis tools and services.

“As ForeFlight continues to look for ways to best serve customers today and long term, we will continue to strategically invest in new capabilities,” said Tim Schuetze, ForeFlight CEO. “We look forward to the knowledge-sharing our companies can provide one another to help deliver the most comprehensive portfolio of products and services to pilots and flight departments in the region.”

ForeFlight formed in 2007 to build software that makes flight planning and flying easier and safer. Its offerings are part of Boeing’s Digital Aviation Solutions business, which offers integrated digital products and services across all phases of flight. ForeFlight is a trusted provider of advanced integrated software for general, business and military aviation customers worldwide.

OzRunways provides CASR Part 175-approved EFB software to pilots for planning, briefing, flight plan filing, and moving map navigation. It serves a diverse customer base encompassing private, commercial, business, and military aviation across Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America.

The companies are not disclosing terms of the transaction.

Innovative app designed for spatial computing brings airports to life in 3D

ForeFlight, a Boeing company – the leading electronic flight bag provider for pilots in the general, business, and military aviation sectors – has launched Voyager, an innovative free app designed exclusively for Apple Vision Pro.

Voyager leverages the advanced spatial computing capabilities of Apple Vision Pro to deliver an unparalleled 3D airport exploration experience, enabling users to immerse themselves in a real-time aviation environment like never before. Voyager combines satellite imagery, high-resolution terrain and live traffic data to bring each airport to life in 3D on top of a floating disk that users can view from any angle.

Users can choose from Voyager’s curated list of Featured Airports, search for airports around the world or sort by proximity to view nearby airports. Using a live traffic feed, Voyager depicts commercial and business jets, turboprops, piston aircraft, and helicopters flying near the selected airport, all shown at their actual to-scale altitudes with realistic pitch and bank. Users can select any aircraft to view detailed information about its flight plan and aircraft type, as well as live speed, altitude and heading information.

Compatibility testing between ForeFlight and both iOS/iPadOS 17.2.1 and 16.7.4 is complete and we are issuing the “all-clear” to ForeFlight customers. Feel free to update at your convenience.

Beginning in 2024, iOS/iPadOS 16 will become the minimum-supported operating system for new versions of ForeFlight.
Soaring through the final days of 2023, we’ve taken a moment to reflect on the features that have defined the year at ForeFlight. In 2023, the spotlight was on innovation and enhanced capabilities and we’re excited to recap and celebrate some of the most noteworthy improvements.

ForeFlight launched on Apple Watch in July, adding a new dimension of convenience and enabling users to experience the full suite of ForeFlight’s powerful aviation tools and features right on their wrists. ForeFlight on Apple Watch makes it easy to quickly check essential information for your flight, including current weather conditions and forecasts as well as airport frequencies, runways, and NOTAMs.

Safety & Situational Awareness Enhancements

Safety is at the center of everything we do at ForeFlight, and this year, we’ve taken situational awareness to new heights. Stay informed and secure during your flight with the latest improvements to Profile View and Profile Corridor. Easily see the highest hazards near each leg of your route with Profile Corridor by enabling either Profile View or Hazard Advisor to activate the corridor. Profile View also displays terrain and obstacle strikes more clearly with red X markers, making it easier to identify potential hazards.

We also introduced Controlled Airspace Alerts to help pilots around the world fly more easily in and around complex controlled airspace with visual and auditory warnings as they approach, enter, and exit controlled airspace. These timely notifications help you stay aware of your surroundings, promoting more informed decision-making at every step. We enhanced Controlled Airspace Alerts further by adding frequencies to these alerts, providing immediate visual access to relevant radio frequencies.

The addition of Aircraft on Runway Alerts, powered by any live ADS-B or FLARM traffic source, provides critical alerts during final approach when an aircraft is present on your runway or approaching the runway you’re currently on.

June featured the introduction of ADS-B Traffic Breadcrumbs, allowing you to check the recent flight paths of nearby aircraft to see which runways or procedures are in use, better anticipate where an approaching aircraft is likely heading, and check for busy traffic patterns.

Map & Data Enhancements: Elevating Your Planning & Routing

This year ForeFlight took your flying experience to new heights with map and data enhancements. We worked to improve rendering speed and data presentation, ensuring a seamless and intuitive navigation experience. We added a new Radar layer that is less pixelated and 3.5 minutes faster.

To enhance VFR routing and navigation we introduced interactive VFR Waypoints, including checkpoints and visual reporting points, for the US, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and South Africa and enhanced the functionality of existing VFR waypoints in Europe. Not only can you plan and fly with these waypoints in your route and Navlog, but you can also file flight plans and ForeFlight will automatically convert them to allowable lat/long coordinates.

Customization: Fly Your Way

While prioritizing efficiency and safety in every monthly advancement, we’ve also dedicated attention to enhancing the extent to which you can customize ForeFlight to your liking. A fan-favorite among these is the option to select a different Ownship Color, which combines with ForeFlight’s varied ownship markers modeled after dozens of real-life aircraft to allow endless flexibility.

We added the My Comments feature to the More menu, allowing you to conveniently view and manage all your airport and FBO comments – whether published, drafted, or rejected – all in one place. You can add airport comments by tapping the Comments button while viewing an airport, then toggle from Remarks to Comments and tap the + button, or add FBO comments using the Add Comment button while viewing an FBO’s details.

As we celebrate the close of 2023, we look forward to continuing our commitment to excellence, safety, and the joy of flying in the year to come. Happy Holidays and here’s to more flying!
