The deadline to submit papers to SOCALLT and IALTT is coming up soon! Both are Language Technology conferences. IALLT is the international conference that meets every other year and SOCALLT is the regional group that meets every year.

IALLT: Atlanta, Georgia, May 26-30, 2009

Deadline: November 21st
Submit proposal
Note: IALLT offers a graduate student grant program to allow worthy candidates an opportunity to attend the biennial conference.

Here is a good tutorial on how to embed Youtube clips in your PowerPoint presentation. You need to have PowerPoint 2003 or 2007 for it to work though!

For those of you who are working on their portfolio, here is a handout I put together. It explains how to take screenshots on the MAC (we have a screen capture software installed on the PC in the development station, it is called Snag-it). The handout provides you with step by step illustrated explanations (as always) on how to resize, frame, crop, edit and annotate your screenshots. I will turn this into an online animated module as soon as I can!

Free PDF creator

Hi everybody,

I have found and successfully tested a way to install a free PDF creator on a pc running 2000 or XP. It is a little bit cumbersome to set up but works and is free!
Download the instructions and follow them step-by-step. You will need to install two small applications first and then, you will install a virtual printer on your pc. If you have a laptop, I would be happy to help you set it up if you bring it to me. If you don’t have a laptop and are running into problems, try calling me in my office and I’ll see what I can do!

I would like to organize a Language Technology share-fair sometime early November. I am thinking of a series of 15 minute sessions where you would show your fellow TA/Instructors/GPTI how you incorporate technology in your classes: Blogs, PowerPoint, film, websites, anything that makes your teaching better, easier, more effective, more interesting, ect.
Please, RSVP with ideas and proposals. I will put together a more comprehensive description of the project but I need to know if you are interested! Answer in a comment or e-mail me!

Dear All,

I hope you are all having a wonderful and hectic beginning of the semester. I am finalizing the Fall workshop schedule and will post it as soon as the guest speaker event is finalized.
In the meantime, if you have a Blog on Blogger and are using a PC, you should probably read this!
Maggie McCullar has decided to experiment using a Blog to manage her classes this semester. She is using it conjunction with the Google calendar tool, which I think is a brilliant idea! Maggie, feel free to post a link to your Blog(s) in a comment to showcase your great work!

I am offering the workshop on Instructional Design and Technology on Thursday, August 23rd. This workshop will not be repeated in the fall so if you want to attend it, please come on Thursday, 10am to 11:25am, Hale 230.

Dear All,

Thank you very much for attending the Blogging
workshop last Friday. Let's meet again for a practice session this
Friday, same time (1pm), same location. I would like to talk a little
bit about RSS which is the technology that allows users to sign up for a Blog, a Podcasting program or a news program.

This is the symbol for RSS. I am sure you have seen this before, some of you already have it on their Blogs!

I would also like to introduce three new items:
- how to embed sound (see example below)
- how to embed video clips using the new video tool that Blogger just released (it is a beta version, see example below)
- how to use your spot account or webfiles in conjunction with Blogger to allow your students to download documents (such as a syllabus for example).

Embedded sound file

This is an example of an embedded sound file. The file is actually uploaded to the spot server (or webfiles for graduate students).
You can use this to provide your students with recorded messages (Audacity) or to share other types of files (Podcasts and songs for example)

Certificate Credit

If you are eager to obtain some Certificate credits before classes start, here are a few options:

1. The upcoming workshop on Blogging (see previous post)
2. The ITS training on CULearn counts towards the Certificate. ITS offers several sessions throughout the summer. All I need to give you credit for this session is an e-mail from the instructor (edwige.simon@colorado.edu).
3. The GTP session on Instructional Design and Technology (August 23rd, 10am, location TBA). This is actually a Certificate Requirement!

Hi everybody!
The next summer workshop will be on Blogging. Go ahead and sign up to attend the July 27th session on Blogging (1pm). This workshop will be offered once. During the first part of the workshop, Dan Walker (Spanish Ph.D. Candidate) will present the Blog he created to manage his Spanish 2120 class. During the second half , participants will learn about other possible uses of Blogging for Foreign Languages instruction and develop their own Blog.

For those of you who attended the latest workshop, you received a copy of the May 2007 report on Foreign Languages: New Structures for a Changed World.

If you don't want to read it, you can go to the summary published by the Chronicles of Higher Education.

Two very interesting quotes:
Page 7: "To meet the needs of Undergraduate Language Programs (which is where the majority of Ph.D. candidates will find employment), graduate studies should provide substantive training in language teaching and in the use of technologies in addition to cultivating extensive disciplinary knowledge and strong analytic and writing skills. "

and also: "We recommend that institutions take the following steps:
- Teach graduate students to use technology in language instruction and learning."

Let's all meet on Friday at 1pm in Hellems 152 for a practice session. Bring cd tracks, pictures, texts, DVDs ....anything you wish to use to create Hot Potatoes activities. I will show you how to create an index page for your activities and upload them in CULearn. Make sure to request a CULearn account though CUConnect! We will talk about the portfolio, I will show you an example and explain how to take screenshots of your projects and present them.

Welcome to the FLTC Blog!

We are planning on using this Blog to post information about upcoming events, workshops schedules, lectures and other Certificate-related issues. This Blog is public for now, which means that you can all post messages and ask questions; however, we can restrict access to authorized users at any time, should it become necessary.
