Kind Visitors, I had a fascinating conversation this morning in the café at the RISD museum. It inspired me and reminded me how much I want to do in image and word, and also with this site. This site which has been languishing! Once more into the breach — I must reemerge from my ancient chrysalis and hope to knock a few socks off. So keep an eye out. For the moment, here’s my take on The Little Mermaid, from Hans Christians Andersen’s lyrical story. She’s at the O Gallery, in Vejle, Denmark, with a couple of her own siblings and many other wonders.

And, for a visit, The Virgin Shrimp, who will soon have some cousins of her own, I think:

This being has been roosting at the O Gallery in Vejle, Denmark, in excellent company. She holds a mask suggesting the Sun, ever eagerly awaited in the longest winter nights.

Grandmama stands about 12.5” x 5” x 3.5” in mixed mediums, including Japanese air-dry clay, CosClay polymer clay, mulberry papers and acrylic paints and inks. Her bones are aluminum and stainless steel wire with brass rods. She was inspired by a long love of Hieronymus Bosch’s astonishing world, with its hybrid creatures and strange musical instruments. I loved them as a child, and ever since… My artist mother had a tiny book of his work, and I fell for it hard! I loved is his frequent use of owls, an of course the strange ways he combines lifeforms. A small play with those thoughts, below:

Friends, this Winter Fairy is presently on eBay, ending tomorrow evening, Sunday, Sept. 1 (I meant to post earlier! It’s been an interesting week…) This Fairy was begun long ago, when I was creating more very small beings. She was finished this year, 2024.

Kind Visitors, here’s Vineyard Muse, who found a home via the Haven Gallery at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair 2024. She sprouted horns from her leafy crown — she wanted to be close to her faun cousins.
A bit of news: I’ve been redesigning this website, which has felt a bit fossilized for a long time. It wants mending and a fresh look, to match some new projects I’m hatching! In the next weeks, I’ll put up an “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” page, and do a major update. I hope it will offer you a better experience… Thanks so much for visiting!!

Friends, here’s my take on that deep question, “What if Queen Elizabeth the First had been a crustacean?” She has also been chosen as a finalist in Beautiful Bizarre Magazine’s Art Prize competition — enough to please any Aquatic Monarch! :) She’s in fabulous company, which can be seen on the People’s Choice voting page (if you’re inclined to vote for your favorite pieces, the deadline Sept. 7, 2023 Australian Eastern time).

Friends, this fairy has found a permanent home already, but can still be seen at the Haven Gallery in Northport, NY till mid-October, 2022.

Cathy and Arnie Fenner, creators of Spectrum Fantastic Art, have a gorgeous new quarterly magazine. I was immensely honored to have an interview in the first issue — an interview by colleague and wondrous fellow sculptor Kristine Poole, which made it even better! Design and calligraphy are by Rick Cusick, who reveals just how magical calligraphy can be.
