Sunday Synopsis - Cozy Mystery

This is the third book in the Kitten Cafe series. The first thing to note is that you don't have to have read the first two for this one to make sense. If you have read them, you're familiar with the setting and a couple of the characters, but it's not necessary.

Marjorie, who owns the cat cafe', has been busy baking for the Community Center where they will be hosting an event for foster kids and their families. As she goes to check on her neighbor, she finds him dead. She ends up taking temporary ownership of a rare "Werewolf" Lykoi kitten due to his owner's death. In addition, the Christmas gifts for the foster kids have been stolen. Marge and her friend and fellow entrepreneur Esme realize they must go out and try to find the gifts while also asking for further donations.

I won't spoil anything and tell you how it worked out in the end. But be assured there's no swearing, no cliffhangers, and no graphic scenes. I liked this book, maybe not as much as the other two, but not bad.

Looking through recipes a couple of days ago, and my husband found one. I cooked it for dinner last night with only a few minor tweaks. It's French Onion Meatloaf, and it was good.

Next, I'm making crispy chicken sandwiches (kind of like Popeyes chicken sandwiches). Dry mix is breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, seasoning salt and flour. Batter ingredients are egg and milk. Perfect fried chicken every time.

Then I'm making my charro beans from scratch. I won't have the whole family here, just my son, but my whole family loves them, and they freeze very well. First, they have to soak overnight. These have a few ingredients: onion, tomato, broth, jalapeno, bacon, bacon grease, beer, spices, pinto beans, and green chiles when I have them. I often put cilantro, but my soon-to-be daughter-in-law is allergic, so I've been leaving it out. It's still good. They key is to mash some of the beans when they get to a certain point in the cooking process which makes the beans a little thicker. Come on over and have some!

And if all this sounds exciting... it's not really. I'm in a "meh" state of mind currently.

But this will be me in ten days, so it's alright!

This is the 28th installment of the Alex Delaware series. I had read a couple previously, so you can see that you don't have to start at number one. I usually do because that's how I roll, but I got this one for such a bargain I decided to go out of order. Everything is explained enough that you don't have to have read the one(s) prior.

Alex Delaware is a psychologist who often works as a consultant for LAPD and works mostly with a friend of his on the force, Detective Milo Sturgis. The story begins with the discovery of a dead baby buried in a tin box at a woman's house 60 years ago. This event sets off a series of unfortunate mysteries that Delaware and Sturgis will need to connect somehow. And will they even be able to identify the biggest threat?

If you enjoy crime ficion, mysteries, and psychological thrillers, you may enjoy this book. I did.

Happy Random Tuesday

Today as I was reviewing my recipe email, I came across a recipe for Charcuterie Salad. Do we really need a recipe for charcuterie (also known as adult lunchable)? Salami, ham, cheese, crackers, nuts, olives, and so on. Absolutely nothing in the "recipe" distinguished it as a salad. The only difference was it said to serve it in cups with toothpicks. At least with a tray, you can use toothpicks to select the parts you actually like rather than being stuck with what the "chef" wanted you to have. Seems like there is less waste with a tray, also.

Boleyn Traitor by Philippa Gregory
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is one in a long line of Philippa Gregory's novels about English Royal History. And I'm here for it! I hope she continues to write from different points of view within a pre 19th century timeline. They are my favorite.

This book focuses on someone who seems unimportant, but in actuality has more influence than one would think. The main character is Jane Boelyn, also known as Lady Rochford. She was Anne Boelyn's sister-in-law having been married to her brother. As a spy, Lady Rochford must manage the secrets of the Tudor Court and the dangers that come with it. She is often seen as a villain, but serves as the protagonist of this story. Jane is a survivor of much of Henry VIII's rule.

The book addresses the themes of power, betrayal, ambition, survival, and loyalty. I don't want to give away any more to the story because it is such a great book, I think you should read it.

It's Tuesday Again

Here it is again... Tuesday. Funny how that happens every week! Here's a random thought. I was watching Call the Midwife today, and one of the characters said, "You're going to have to wait on me hand and foot." That made me wonder... why do we say "wait on" and "hand and foot."

Obviously waiting on you means catering to your needs, but why "wait on?" Apparently, it has been linked to the word "waiter" as early as the 14th century which means to serve someone. According to the www, it is mainly an American saying, especially in the South. I still don't understand why the word wait means to serve someone.

Hand and foot makes a little more sense. It originated in the 14th century as well and refers to the "hand," doing manual tasks, and "foot," meaning movement, and together meaning to be at someone's beck and call. Doesn't that one make more sense?

I've got a new friend! Meet Franklin.

He's not mine, but I get to spend the week with him. My daughter is fostering him, and I am staying with her this week to help her through a surgical procedure.

He's still mostly kitten in his behavior. What a mess! He gets into all kinds of things, even the trash can if you're not watching him. I think he ate one of my earrings. How he got it out of the baggie I will never know. He also bit me, thinking I was food, totally an accident. He likes to wear his shirt and bandana. Appropriately, his shirt says, "Little Menace." He constantly gets underfoot, but he's so loveable.

Happy Random Tuesday

As I mentioned on my "Random" post after the Superbowl, I just can't get enough of this commercial! Lately, I see it on TV quite a bit, but most of the time, they only show the ending with the Eagle spreading his wings and taking off from the Clydesdale's back. But the backstory is so good. Take a minute to watch if you'd like.

This time change is killing me! One day I get too much sleep. Another day I can't sleep at all. This is for the birds! I wish we just stayed at one time - all the time - and didn't change it twice a year. How about you?

And speaking of it being for the birds... The idiom is believed to have been started by soldiers during WWII. They would use it to describe anything that was useless, boring, or of little value. It is believed the imagery comes from birds pecking in dung meaning that if some thing is of such low quality, it isn't fit for me, only for birds. HM. I learned something new!

Have you every noticed the emotional marketing used in advertising recipes? These ads use trigger words to make you think their recipes are better than the rest. Some examples of power words they use:

heavenly

million dollar

grandma

marry me

melt in your mouth

This past week, there was Million Dollar Soup and Twenty-four of Grandma's Signature Recipes.

I've seen Million Dollar Ground Beef Casserole, Marry Me Chicken, Heavenly Mashed Potatoes, and Melt in your Mouth Meatloaf.

Do you think it's a marketing gimmick (like I do), or are these recipes seriously better than others?

This happened to me recently! One time, my husband actually opened the door and got in thinking it was me, and it wasn't! How embarrassing!

For me, this would be craft supplies! Paper, glue, templates, embroidery, I could go on and on.

Do you have streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Paramount +? I think there are very few people who don't have at least one streaming channel. Have you noticed that young people are opting for only using streaming rather than local or traditional cable? All of our (5) children fall into that category. One benefit is that they aren't seeing the number of commercials that we see on local TV, and that is one MAJOR benefit in my opinion.

How do you feel about it?

Everyone seems to want to rush through winter. I guess if you live where it snows, that's totally understandable. Here in Southeast Texas, we rarely, and I mean RARELY get snow. We do get ice, though. In fact, they threatened a big ice storm a couple of weeks ago, but thankfully, it didn't happen. We had some freezing temperatures but not much precipitation. Then this past week, we were in the 80's for 3 days in a row.

We did have a historic ice storm exactly 5 years ago that was one of Texas' worst natural disasters. Millions without power, some for more than a week, snow in many places, ice over the entire state, over 200 deaths. I don't care to relive that. We have had a few freezes this year, but nothing like that.

If we use Groundhog Phil as an indicator, we still have another four weeks of winter to go, which actually lines up closely with the actual first day of Spring, March 20th. How has winter been treating your area?

This actually happens.

How 'bout that game? How 'bout that half time performance? Bad Bunny delivered a solid performance as did Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, but mostly Bad Bunny! I love how they had the field decorated like a sugar cane field. They did an amazing job of setting everything up! And finding out that the couple who got married was actually a REAL wedding was amazing!

Here is my favorite commercial. The rest were disappointing! If you can watch this commercial and not feel something in your heart, you may not have a pulse!

Sunday Synopsis - True Crime

But I Trusted You and Other True Cases by Ann Rule
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ann Rule is the queen of true crime writing for a reason. She takes an actual crime and writes it so that it flows smoothly like fiction. This book focuses on crimes committed by people who were otherwise trustworthy.

The first and longest story in the book is about a middle school counselor who is found shot to death on his own steps on an icy February morning. Having been a middle school teacher for so long, this one blew my mind. I will say that this particular middle school counselor definitely had some eccentricities, but nothing that would lead to his death. It's a twisted and interesting story.

Another story is one called "Death in Paradise: The Haunting Voyage of the Spellbound." This one left me (and the public in general) with more questions than were actually answered by the family and friends on board the Spellbound at the time of the deaths. Yes, multiple.

The remainder of the stories also contribute to the theme of betrayal and hidden darkness. If you like true crime, you will enjoy this book.

All Everyone's Talking About

It's that time of year. No, not Valentine's Day. Superbowl Sunday, a day where even people who have no idea what's happening in the game, nor do they care, watch football for the sole purpose of seeing the new commercials that premier during the game.

I occasionally watch football, but I have no skin in this particular matchup-Patriots and Seahawks. But my husband did place a bet. I have no idea exactly what he bet, but we had to drive to Louisiana to make the bet because we aren't allowed to gamble in Texas. Luckily, it's less than two hours away. And we made a day trip out of it and went to Delta Downs for a few hours. It was fun, and we came home winners.

Anyway, I'm looking forward more to the commercials. Usually, I look forward to the halftime show, too, but I have very little clue about Bad Bunny. I saw part of the Budweiser commercial that starred a Clydesdale foal and an eaglet, and a full-grown Clydesdale and eagle. A Dalmatian had a cameo. Here's a link if you want to see the clip and can't wait. But if this commercial doesn't make you cry... well, I don't know what will. Let me know what you think after you see it!

Murder Under the Mistletoe by Liz Fielding

I know the Christmas season is over, but this is a cute book and you might not even mind that it's no longer the Christmas season while you're reading it. This is a cozy mystery, but it has more twists and turns than the typical cozy mystery.

Meet Abby, mom to three children, divorced, but her ex recently passed away, and she is seeing someone she has reacquainted herself with. She runs the gardens in the town.

Abby delivers the mistletoe and holly to the church for decorating. While she is there, Edward, who's unsteady on his feet, is attempting to place the star on the tree when he falls. As the accident is being investigated, they realize that this was supposed to happen to Gregory Tatton, on purpose, not by accident.

As the reader learns, Gregory Tatton was a ladies man and was blackmailing a large number of community members. It must be one of them who had it in fir Gregory. You'll have to read to find out, but this is a really well-written book.

This is Maybridge Murder Mystery #2. I haven't yet read number 1.

Brrrrr. It's cold!

Thank goodness the amount of freezing precipitation we were supposed to get here was grossly exaggerated! They ended up canceling school for yesterday, but we didn't even have any ice. There were a few overpasses that iced over on the weekend, but they were further north than where I am. It barely got above freezing yesterday, and we had below freezing temps overnight, but it wasn't as serious as we were first led to believe, and we Texans PANIC when there is anything unusual about the weather. Now... our daughters in Dallas and Austin got full blown SNOW. It's beautiful, but I couldn't get used to it on a daily basis. I don't know how some of you do it! I guess it's what we are and aren't used to. How's the weather where you are?

We are not home right now. We're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a cruise, and at the time this gets posted, we are likely headed to Ensanada, Mexico! This trip wasn't just coming out to California to hop on a cruise ship but also to finally meet my son's soon-to-be Mother-in-Law and her brother and his partner. I felt like I knew them already, but a formal meet-up was quite nice. DH and I also went to Universal Studios Hollywood. (I'm a big Harry Potter fan.) More about that later!
